2010 Chevrolet HHR Review: Reliable, Spacious & Quirky Small SUV

Alex Showalter
Aug 24, 2022

The 2010 Chevrolet HHR lasts around 250,000 miles with only some minor door handle and power steering issues. At $5,563 to $9,290, it’s a good value for a compact SUV with a comfortable interior.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
There’s plenty of cargo space for its small footprint, the upgraded engines offer great power and it’s affordable to maintain.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The base engine is weak at highway speeds, there’s a lot of plastic used in the cabin and the suspension may be too firm for some drivers.

Is the 2010 Chevrolet HHR a Good Used SUV?

  • Yes, 2010 is a good year for the HHR. Owner reviews praise the fuel efficiency, low maintenance costs, and space for passengers.
  • Interior quality is worse than other small SUVs. There is a lot of cheap plastic used in the cabin and the cloth feels thin, the stereo is also basic compared to other vehicles.
  • Reliability ratings are above average. Avoid models from 20062008, and go with a 20092011 which offers better reliability ratings.
  • Performance is slow from the standard 4-cylinder engine, but the turbo offers excellent power for a small SUV.
  • The 2010 HHR is a very safe vehicle, earning a perfect 5-star rating overall in crash tests, with the lowest score being 4-stars in the rollover risk rating.
  • Fuel economy is good for a compact SUV at around 26 MPG, which should allow owners to get about 416 miles of range out of the 16 gallon gas tank.

The car I like. I like to drive my car everyday. And go fishing in my car.
Well when I saw the hhr I knew that I want that car ok I have been driving a chevy ever seen I was a teenager and the price was right, so when you see a car you like no matter chevy or Honda if you like it and the price is right you will. Buy it ok. So when you go car shopping look for a good car that is going to last long enough so you can pay it off ok.

Fast engine with a nice modern look
It's a very reliable car I've been driving it for my work and home lifestyle and it hasn't failed me yet. It's very comfortable with soft seats and enough room for a family. Everyone in my family loves it also can loves going on family trips in it when we get the chance. And the miles per gallon is great on the pockets.

Very comfy and I have enough room to load my groceries.
Only issue was the key lock, the windows and the door handles have been replaced. Nothing with the motor or the transmission. The paint job is fading but then again I live in Arizona.Overall a good car that's has given me just minor issues. I love my car.

My car seems pretty old but the make and model just seem to suit me. It has a lot of personality. Sometimes though it shows its age.

Chevy 2010 HHR is probably the best car I've ever owned
This car gets me from point A to point B without any problems, I've even driven across the country with it

I love how there is so many different functions with all of the seat.
I have the car with no windows in the back. It was honestly a car I would have gone out of the way to look at it. The car dealership picked out a couple cars and the hhr was the first car we test drove and the only. The whole family loved it. It is roomy for camping. Plenty of legroom in the front and back. The back seats fold down and the front seats can fold I am half and have almost a table. There is so many neat extras to the car. I am very happy with my purchase.

Great drive, and gas mileage. Comfortable and stylish also. Best car I have had yet. Very happy with Chevrolet purchase.

Very spacious on the inside.
Two many problems. Cheap material. Always a new issue coming up. Unreliable. Decent gas mileage, but not the greatest. Weak engine. Ugly shape and look. Bad blind spots. Bad sound system. Do not last long. Not a good long term car. Do not make anymore because they’re cash cows. No one keeps them for long.

This vehicle is the worst one I have ever encountered.
This vehicle has been horrible since day one. It has been nothing but problems. I am so used to riding in cars that drive smooth and this vehicle is the complete opposite. I feel every bump, every little thing is felt in there and the car just is a horrible driver. The car's engine constantly shuts off on me, tires constantly loose air.
accountCircle Victoria M
This is an awful vehicle. It is ugly and terrible to drive.
The 2010 Chevrolet hhr is not built well. It is awful to drive with too much play in the steering wheel and the inability to travel uphill depending on what mood the car is in. Backing into a rotting wooden post at 1 mile per hour caused my entire hatch to cave in to the point that the rear wiper does not even touch the back glass anymore. I hate this car.
accountCircle Desere C
It is an absolute nightmare of a vehicle.
The hub assembly is going out in the front end on the passengers side and oil leaks into the engines due to the piston rings. The wheel is about to fall off where the hub assembly is out, the radio screen is shorted out. I have only had the car for a year and have had to replace the alternator, the battery, tires, brakes, spark plugs and more. I despise HHRs.
accountCircle Emma B
The love hate relationship.
My vehicle is not very reliable in ways like the turn signal lever stopped connecting to the turn light. Sometimes my windows do not roll down or up. There are blind spots are. Are very distracting.
accountCircle Nicole K
It is not worth purchasing.
It has had a lot of mechanical problems and it is not very reliable. It would be good for a single person but not for a family. It also always have lights going out. We had to replace the engine 9 years into having it after not doing extensive wear and tear on it.
accountCircle Teresa S
Wish I would have kept my truck!
It is a cheap vehicle. Most of the body is plastic. It sounds hollow. It rides rough. The interior is cheap in stains easily. It is made for a short person. I am 5 foot 3 and I have the seat all the way back. However, I really do like how the middle row seats go down easily and makes a large cargo area.
accountCircle Brittany W
The info button tells me low gas, mileage, tire pressure in each tire, temp.
I have been having transmission potential issues. I do not like the style of the car. It does not get as good of gas mileage as I thought. It seems like a good car for 200k miles probably. It is very computer oriented. So I couldn't even open the trunk to jump the battery when it died. It would be nice if they had a key option as well.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevrolet HHR?

  • Consumer Reports says the Chevrolet HHR offers secure and stable handling, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the HHR a 4.4/5 praising the comfortable suspension, but doesn’t like the long braking distances.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the HHR 4.3/5 and enjoy the spacious cabin and reliability, but owners don’t like how fast the brakes wear out.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Chevrolet HHR Have?

The most common problems found on the 2010 Chevrolet HHR include broken door handles, power steering system issues, and headlights that burn out fast. Overall, these problems are minor compared to other SUVs from 2010, and repair costs are average as well.

Broken door handles are the most widespread complaint from owners at around 75,000 miles. The handle mechanism in the door snaps since it has a lot of plastic pieces in it. Changing out the door handle costs about $150, depending on local labor rates.

Power steering system issues show up on some HHR models at around 70,000 miles. Most of the time it’s a problem with the power steering motor, which costs about $350 to swap out. The motor may also be covered by a recall. In some cases there are steering rack problems which cost $1,200 to change out.

Headlights that burn out fast are another issue reported by owners at around 45,000 miles. The standard bulbs tend to wear out quicker than in some other vehicles, and cost about $100 to replace. There are also longer-lasting aftermarket bulbs available in the same price range.

There are 4 recalls, with the most serious being for the ignition switch, where the key can be removed when the vehicle is running. Chevrolet will replace the ignition switch to solve the problem. The other recalls are for the power steering motor and once it’s changed isn’t a big issue.

How Long Will the 2010 Chevrolet HHR Last?

A well-maintained 2010 Chevrolet HHR can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 50,000 miles longer than its closest rival, the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Regular annual maintenance costs are close to other compact SUVs, at $537 per year, according to Repair Pal.

Since most 2010 HHR models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the stabilizer bars for $135, the valve cover gasket costing $200, and the brake hose which costs $150.

accountCircle H S

Yes it's reliable and I have had no major issues. Other than regular maintenance I've done no major repairs.

accountCircle Donna C

It is really reliable. Or does have a few minor issues like really bad blind spots especially when rounding a curve. I have to bob and weave to see. The cup holders are small no bigger than a can of coke. Changing the battery is not easy either. I have to take the stair tire out to get to it. I bought mine used and have (knock on wood) has only one major repair...

accountCircle Georgia S

It is very reliable. I had car troubles but it was caused by me neglecting maintenance on my car. As long as you take care of the oil and check ups, that car gave me a great decade.

accountCircle Kelley W

Not really the just normal wear and tear. Little things have gone out like the driver door doesn't open from the inside.

accountCircle Michelle S

Very reliable and good on gas. No problems since we have owned it. Glad we got it. Would buy it again. Bought it used and have been very happy with it.

accountCircle Sorren C

Yes. It is reliable. The only problem I have is a check engine line is stuck on my dashboard. I have had it checked and there is nothing wrong

How Much Is the 2010 Chevrolet HHR Worth?

What are the Different Models of the Chevrolet HHR?

There are three main models of the HHR offered for the 2010 model year. The HHR was introduced for the first generation in 2006, and then discontinued after 2011 due to declining sales.

What Engines Come In the Chevrolet HHR?

  • The standard engine in the HHR is the weak 2.2L 4-cylinder which makes 155 horsepower while getting up to 26 MPG.
  • A step up is the better 2.4L 4-cylinder which produces 172 horsepower and gets up to 25 MPG.
  • The flagship engine is the strong 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder which makes 260 horsepower and gets up to 24 MPG. Performance is good, taking only 6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chevrolet HHR Come In?

How Big Is the Chevrolet HHR?

The 2010 Chevrolet HHR is smaller than many other compact SUVs on the market including the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape. Passenger space is excellent with plenty of leg and headroom throughout the cabin to easily fit taller adults.

Cargo space is close to other small SUVs with enough space for 3-5 suitcases behind the seats and around 12 suitcases with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Chevrolet HHR Compare to the Competition?

The 2010 Chevrolet HHR is an average rated compact SUV that focuses more on city driving with a lower suspension than rivals, which makes it not as good on the snow and dirt roads.

The Chevrolet Equinox is another rival from Chevrolet, which costs about $1,300 more. Passenger space is a bit better in the Chevrolet Equinox, but the Chevrolet HHR has more responsive steering and a stronger engine. We recommend the Chevrolet HHR for 2010 since there are fewer mechanical problems.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a competitor which costs about $700 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Chrysler PT Cruiser, but the Chevrolet HHR has more space for passengers and cargo. We recommend the Chevrolet HHR since there are fewer problems, but both are similar retro-inspired small SUVs.

Do Owners Recommend the Chevrolet HHR?

accountCircle H S

Yes it's very reliable and has great gas mileage and has been one of the more dependable cars I have owned.

accountCircle Donna C

Yes it is a wonderful vehicle. I has great gas mileage. Fold down back seats for extra cargo room. I love all the little compartments to hide stuff away so the car is not cluttered. It is compact but can still hold 4 adults and a 50" TV.

accountCircle Georgia S

Yes but there were a few details that made this car a difficult car to keep. Although the car has run great for the 9 years that I have kept it, the engine is placed in the trunk portion of the car. My battery has died before and since the whole car is electrical, I had to call a locksmith to open the car to get to the battery. I had to buy extra long cables to reach the battery for a jump. Also, the handles to the doors have broken off multiple times.

accountCircle Vanessa H

Yes it's reliable not to much upkeep. it's great if you have a lot to load and easy to put seats up and down to expand the back.

accountCircle April J

Great. No problems so far. My husband is a mechanic and said the engine in this vehicle is a good one. Love it.

accountCircle Robin O

Yes, it is easy to maintain and handles well. The gas mileage is good and it is innovative. It matches my personality and is attractive and affordable

Great car for all around use.
Bought my car new and have enjoyed it from day one. Great on the highway and in town. I have only had 2 problems with it, the most expensive was the water pump. Great on gas mileage and it's comfortable for me. I can let the back seats down and haul bags of dirt, back seats up and have room for my groceries, or plenty of room for my 5 dogs to be strapped in to travel. I hope to get 250,000 miles as I only have 88,000.

It is not a good size for a small family or tall person.
I do not like the shape of the vehicle. The back seat is small. I feel cramped whenever sitting there. Adjusting the front passenger seat can be difficult, it is a manual maneuver. I do like that I am able to put the back seats flat in order to give myself a larger trunk area when needed for large purchases. Overall, I believe it needs a new design.

2010 Chevrolet hhr is stylish, comfortable ride and popular.
I really like my Chevrolet hhr. It is a comfortable ride from behind the seat to driving down the road. It is easy to get in and out of because it is not too high or low to the ground. The interior is stylish and modern. My car is black and suits the overall style. It is a 4 door wagon with a rear lift hatch for easy storage.

Love it so much, I have 2 hhr's.
Have had a 2010 ls for over 1 year, came across a 2010 lt automatic same color intended parts car, the 2010 is such a nice car, I am keeping both of them. I cannot bring myself to alter the 2010. It rides and runs perfectly. 158k, still very tight, everything works. My 5 speed is now going to be my little zipper, expecting some tuning and performance add ons. Love the styling, vintage looks w/o the vintage cost. Seats folded down on both, huge cargo area for those side of the road finds! Love them both. Buy one that was well cared for, you'll get a winner.

Chevy hhr honest review.
The ac vents are awful. The interior door handles are cheap plastic and very breakable. There should. E a way to unlock the car without the key fob. The blind spot is huge for short people! The windshield is to low, very difficult to see stop lights in intersections. Overall satisfied with size of back seat and trunk area. Kind of a hassle without having the trunk area open, would be much better with a top shelf layer that raised when you opened the hatch.

This vehicle has a rough ride.

2010 Chevy hhr, a good vehicle for anyone who’s looking for a midsize car.
The hhr is a pretty good all-around vehicle. The seats in the back lay flat which is amazing for moving or traveling, you could definitely sleep in it if needed. I get pretty good gas mileage, around 26 mpg. I do a fair amount of highway/city driving and it has not been below 23 mpg, I believe the highest I ever got was about 28mpg. One disadvantage is the smaller windows and windshield, but once you are driving you do not notice it a ton. It is a good car if you are taller, I am about 6’1 and I drive it comfortably, and my boyfriend who is 6’5 can ride in the passenger seat without too much discomfort. I love my hhr, and I'd highly recommend it.

Great value for the price.
For being eight years old, the HHR has its standard wear and tear issues. The worst since I purchased it was a gas line leak. Otherwise, I love having a hatchback with a fair amount of storage space that still gets good gas mileage. It is comfortable to drive, especially for a short person like myself.

The Chevrolet is an exceptional vehicle that anyone would be proud of!
I love my Chevy hhr. It is a very reliable vehicle to drive. It gets good gas mileage, approximately 25 mpg. It is a smooth ride. The HHR is stylish as well. The seats are comfortable to sit in and has adequate leg room. I like that my HHR easily fits in my garage. It is big enough that I would feel protected in a car accident, unlike would be the case in a really small car. The Chevy HHR has the normal features of what you need in a vehicle. It has a good air conditioning unit and heater. It has electric windows and electric seats. It also has air bags for the driver and passenger. However, there is a button you can push to turn off the passenger airbag. The HHR has a factory stereo that has good clear sound, with the option of having onstar. I like the paint job as it is a shiny metallic dark blue. The HHR has good acceleration without having a bumpy start. It has great brakes which work really well. It has four doors and seats 4 people comfortably. It is a hatchback which makes it very easy to go grocery shopping. It is quite roomy and if more room is needed, the back seat can fold down. The HHR has a good engine; however, the battery is tricky to get to. There is a fuse panel on top, but it is doable. In summary, the HHR is a really good dependable car. Anyone would be very pleased with owning one.

It is not worth purchasing.
It has had a lot of mechanical problems and it is not very reliable. It would be good for a single person but not for a family. It also always have lights going out. We had to replace the engine 9 years into having it after not doing extensive wear and tear on it.

It has the best leg room in any seat.
My Chevrolet hhr ls is a great vehicle. It is very comfortable and spacious. The room in the backseat is great for my children. The trunk space is amazing for our groceries or when we go on long trips. It has great gas mileage. It has a great audio system as well as ice cold ac.

I love all the storage. There is always enough room for what we need.
193000 miles engine is great other problem with muffler and bearing. Great design. Air is still working great. This car has made it in many trips to North Carolina and West Virginia. Always starts every single time. There is a lot of room in the trunk and the two back seats fold forward to make more room. Then the from passenger seat fouls all the way down for even more room.

The Chevrolet HHR is a gas-guzzling money-pit. Consider any other car. This car will break your bank.
I like having a car that runs. This car is too low to the ground, terrible on gas, is seemingly built out of coke cans... Hail and debris easily leave dents all over the body. I have had to have the ignition replaced twice due to being stuck running with the key in it. I have had to have it fixed after snow getting jammed behind the tires. It really is the worst car I've ever owned. I suspect this is why they stopped making them in 2011.

It is not the car my dreams and never will be.
It is a fine car it just feels small to me. The windshield feels small and enclosed so I feel kind of closed in. My wife on the other hand loves it. I dislike driving it but as a passenger it is a decent vehicle. She has had the car for a few years now and it is still in one piece. I mean overall it is not too bad. I would personally prefer a different one.

I don't know. I don't drive it my husband does. As I said, it is very comfortable and roomy.
Nothing either way. It's just not the vehicle I would like. It is very comfortable and roomy though.

Just a great truck. Love driving it and gets a lot of comforting looks.
My hhr is the panel model. It gets excellent fuel mileage. Problems = none. Plenty of power up hills. Has never let me down. Very comfortable vehicle. I added American mags and raised white letter tires to give it the old skool look. Great vehicle all the way around.

Why I love my HHR ! Small on the outside, big on the inside.
The reason that I love my HHR so much is because it is extremely reliable. No matter how many miles I add onto it, she just keeps on going! The HHR also is a lot roomier than meets the eye. With the back row of seat being foldable, as well as one at a time, is a life saver! The original sound system and speakers has lasts almost 10 years with no issue and I listen to my music loud! All around fantastic car that is small on the outside and roomie on the inside. 10/10 would advise anyone to get one for themselves.
