2005 Chevrolet Malibu Review: One of the Best All-Around Mid-Sizes Available, Despite Electrical Concerns

Gilbert Smith
Feb 23, 2023

The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu is a very well-rounded mid-size. It’s sporty, comfortable, roomy, fuel efficient, and fairly priced. There are some recurring electrical issues that may be worrying, but major mechanical failures are few and far between.

Front angle view.
likeFilled The Good
Spacious, comfortable, fun to drive, and more fuel-efficient than you expect of a sporty V6.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Not quite as powerful as a 3.5 Altima, or as reliable as a Ford Taurus. The Malibu is a jack of all trades but a master of none.

Is the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – The 2005 Malibu is a very good all-arounder.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – The only mark against the Malibu in the comfort and cargo department is the lack of fold-flat seating, so trunk space, though generous, can’t be expanded into the backseats.
  • Reliability 7/10 – You can expect the transmission and engine to make at least 200,000 miles. But you’ll be making a lot of little electrical repairs along the way.
  • Safety 6/10 – This would be an easy seven or eight if the side airbags came as a standard feature, but they don’t, resulting in miserable side-impact scores from the IIHS and NHTSA.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – 22/30 miles to the gallon, city/highway, is pretty darn good for a twenty year old V6 mid-size.
  • Value 8/10 – The Ford Taurus is arguably the best overall value if you’re shopping for a 2005 mid-size, but it just barely wins by a nose.

It is a reliable car, however there isn't as much room in the trunk for storage.
I recently had the oil changed, new brakes put on, and I took it to a mechanic. I have both tie rods out, my tires needed aligned, and my break pads on my passenger side

Chevrolet Malibu maxx rocks
The car runs really smooth. Stock radio is great I get asked all the time if I have a system installed. Moonroof in the back, pretty cool for my kids. Tons of trunk space, hidden compartments everywhere. Extremely reliable I have an 05 and just recently had a major repair, the cv joint. Love the digital alerts to door being open fluids being low etc

The Chevy Malibu is a wonderful car!
Chevy Malibu is such a comfortable, stylish car. There's plenty of legroom, which is important in my family! It is extremely reliable and dependable. I would definitely buy another Chevy Malibu!

Highlights of the Chevy Malibu Maxx
I love my Chevy Malibu. It has always been very reliable. Any repairs we've had to do were very easy and affordable. We love the back seat it is very roomy and has space to haul things. The trunk space is large as well. The gas mileage is amazing. We always take this car on trips because of how well it does on the highway. It drives very smoothly.

I love my car. Great size and it's really reliable. Its 13 years old and as long as you keep up with it regularly it is the perfect car! I have been on several rode trips no problems. Large trunk space, ac pumps out. Only thing... I wish this make and model came with a built in NAV system(haha) but have no complaints. Great reliable car!
Great long lasting car. Be mindful of the gear shift... Mine came off from old age. Went to junk yard grabbed another and it works like a charm like new.

My vehicle Chevy Malibu maxx.
Air conditioning went off and then it will not come back on. I believe there may be a leak somewhere but I am not sure. The tint comes undone after some time. Temperature stays a little bit too hot. You have to keep the air conditioning on to allow the temperature to come down to a reasonable level.
accountCircle Jennifer K
It is a fuel efficient wonderful utilitarian car, that I wish they still made.
I like that it is utilitarian, can haul lots of things with it. It has a lot of get up and go and it gets really good gas mileage. It has had a few recalls and I have had a few problems that haven't been resolved with those, that is the only real bothersome part

Runs good, fuel efficient, good for road trips, lots of room, good for a family car, great a/c, great charging ports
Would be a great family car, good for a long road trip

Well the most important thing they should know is that it's not worth more than $1,000.
Well I live in south Louisiana and my car does not have AC. Also, my car was handed down to me so it has stains all over the carpet. It shakes when I come to a stop at a stop light pretty bad too.
accountCircle Brooke R
It has a dent in the back passenger fender from when I hit a deer driving at night
My car heat does not work half of the time and if it does work it takes forever. Also my speakers are trash, the side panel in the passenger seat comes off, brake pads go out too much, etc. I also hate how dust and snowflakes come through my windshield vents on the inside.

Great starter car but not for starter families or grown children
Engine messes up and it's hard for my husband to work on it with the transmission. It runs for the most part but will be cramped if your children are teenagers. A great car to get at first but need more room. It does have nice features like gas gauge will tell you mileage left to the tank and will let you know if tires are low or fluids are low.

Its my main form of transportation. This car has recalls on this car.
I like the body style ok. The gas mileage isn't bad. It has a roomy trunk. I don't like the problems I've had with it.

Cash vehicle need facelift but reliable.
My vehicle needs tire rods, bodywork, new tires, motor mount, and interior facelift that needs new door panels. The car is very so far reliable but needs a lot of work. Very comfortable ride . With cruise control, side airbags includes a CD/ bluetooth radio, & powerseats.

The one most important thing people should know about my car is that it is OLD

That my car is pretty reliable and a solid car.
I like that my car is reliable. I don't like that fact that it is old and has a lot of mileage on it. It's starting to breakdown.

Underlying electrical issues.
This car has underlying and unknown electrical issues, the windows randomly stop working and start working. The key fob slowly stopped working to unlock the car and had its batteries replaced several times (and fob replaced completely once) so the car must be manually unlocked and locked. Starter issues, sometimes the car will just not start and needs to sit for a few moments.

What Do Critics Say About the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?

Consumer Reports found the 2005 Malibu to be “well-rounded,” praising the quiet interior, smooth ride, zippy acceleration, and solid fuel economy. The only negative CR reported had to do with side airbags not being included as a standard feature.

Kelley Blue Book users give the 2005 Malibu a fairly strong 90% recommendation praising the car’s longevity, with many owners reporting more than 200,000 miles on the original engine. One driver reports walking out of a head-on collision without a scratch. The most common complaint: Lots of little repairs.

Edmunds liked the Malibu’s smooth riding suspension and fuel-efficient V6. They found the interior to be spacious, and they liked the remote-start feature (a novelty back in 2005). They were less impressed with the cheap-feeling interior trim, wimpy brakes, and lack of manual transmission options.

What Common Problems Does the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

With 692 reports on file, steering complaints make up around half of the 2005 Malibu’s 1,369 total complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There was a recall for loss of power steering in 2014, but complaints are still rolling in as late as 2022.

Drivers have reported a wide range of electrical problems, with 256 complaints on file in total. Issues range from sudden power loss to cruise control failure and the anti-theft system kicking in and stopping drivers from starting up their own vehicles.

Drivers are reporting relatively few powertrain and engine issues for such an old car, with most reports pointing to electrical rather than mechanical issues. There is a recall in effect for a broken shift cable, so check the VIN and make sure that’s been sorted.

The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu has 7 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which isn’t bad for a car that came out around twenty years ago.

How Long Will the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Last?

Chevrolet Malibu drivers typically report a minimum mileage of around 200,000, with some reaching 300,000 on the original engine and transmission. If you’re buying used, you’ll want to place your bets on a maximum life expectancy of 250,000 with good maintenance. Beyond that, repairs will probably start to get pretty expensive.

RepairPal estimate an annual maintenance cost of $532, with new exhaust manifolds being the most expensive common fix, starting at around $541.

accountCircle Hector C

Yes. It is very reliable. It can get you to anywhere you need to be without having to worry about how much gas you are using. Also very easy vehicle to drive.

accountCircle Angela F

The transmission is getting old. We have not had many problems with it so I would recommend it to any future perspective buyers.

accountCircle Jason T

I have never had any problems. It has been extremely reliable and it has saved me a lot of money through the years since my car has been so solid and trouble free.

accountCircle Michael C

It has been a very reliable vehicle. There have been some normal repairs over the years but it a good car. It has been driven a lot and still looks and drives well.

accountCircle Lisa F

Ignition switch has had some problems but other than that yes it is a very reliable car never any other problems.

accountCircle Nikki L

It was reliable until security relay keeps going off shutting the car down until reset. The ignition going out multiple times.

accountCircle Christina S

Yes it's a reliable car. It does have some problems. The engine u can't check the transmission fluid yourself like on most other vehicles.

accountCircle Caprice H

It is very reliable. All of the problems have been regular wear and tear and such, but none too dramatic where I have considered getting another vehicle.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is decent for a 2005 sedan. The iPhone was still a few years off in 2005, so you can’t expect Bluetooth connectivity or anything like that. But, CD players come standard and the LT trim features a programmable Driver Information Center.

Safety technology is good for 2005. Anti-lock brakes and traction control come standard. But, side airbags are only available in the higher trims, and the standard model earned an IIHS crash test score of Poor as a result of the missing airbags.

Is the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Value?

The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu is a very good value. The Base model typically lists at around $3,023, the LS for $3,770, and the LT for $4,011. These are for models with around 140,000 miles on the odometer, and you’ll probably get another 60,000 miles out of them at a minimum, and possibly another 100,000.

Cost of ownership is fairly low, as well. You might have to replace a few wiring harnesses early on, but beyond the car isn’t known for expensive breakdowns, and the car gets decent mileage for a 2005 sedan.

What are the Different Models of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?

The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in just three trim levels, from the entry-level Base to the high-end LT.

With the Base model you’re getting:

  • Cloth seating
  • CD player
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Anti-lock brakes and traction control
  • Cruise control
  • Power windows, door locks, and lift-gate
  • Remote keyless entry

The mid-range LS adds:

  • Programmable Driver Information Center
  • Premium cloth seating
  • Driver lumbar support

Finally, the top-of-the-line LT features:

  • Heated 6-way power adjust seats
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • UltraLux leather seating 6 speakers
  • Side airbags
  • Rear sound system with headphone jacks and two sets of headphones

What Engines Come In the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?

  • All three Malibus come packed with a 3.5L V6 engine delivering 200 horsepower and 220 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission and configured in front wheel drive, and it averages around 22/30 miles to the gallon, city/highway.

What Colors Does the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?

The 2005 Malibu is pretty comfortable. The ride is smooth, the seats are nice and firm, and you’ve got 52 inches of hiproom in the back, so you should have no problem packing the whole crew onboard.

Suspension complaints are few, so the shocks and struts have held up well over the years. Just make sure to see how the car performs on speed bumps when you take it for a test drive.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

The 2005 Malibu’s trunk space is generous, at 15.4 cubic feet. That’ll hold four or five medium sized suitcases easy. But, the seats don’t fold flat, so you’ll need some bungee cords for awkward items like bicycles and furniture.

Inside the cabin you’ve got more slots and pockets than you’ll likely need, and four cupholders in total. So you probably won’t be stacking notebooks and tablets and phones and wallets on the seats, you’ve got somewhere to put everything you want to bring with you on the trip.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The 2005 Malibu was the second model in the nameplate’s 6th Generation, running from 2004 to 2007.

2002: There were no big updates for 2002, but the Base model got a CD player, and there are some color options that weren’t available in 2001.

2003: No big changes for 2003, either. At this point, Chevy were preparing the launch of the sixth gen model, so updating the fifth gen was a low priority.

2004: The Malibu was totally redesigned for 2004. The interior is more spacious, the V6 engine is brand new, and the styling is sharper and more modern.

2005: No big changes to the main lineup, but a 3.9L V6 Malibu SS was introduced as a separate vehicle.

2006: Some minor visual redesigns saw the Malibu getting sleeker edges and a new wheel design.

2007: Chevy added dual-stage front airbags for 2007.

How Does the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to the Competition?

The Chevrolet Malibu’s closest competitors in the mid-00’s were the Nissan Altima and the Ford Taurus.

A base SE model 2005 Ford Taurus delivers just 153 horsepower for about the same price, so at the entry level the 200 horsepower Malibu is the sportier option. But, the Taurus has half as many complaints on file with the NHTSA and just one recall, and the 205 horsepower SEL Taurus costs about the same as an LT Malibu.

The 2005 Nissan Altima starts at around a thousand dollars more than the base Malibu, and that’s for a 175 horsepower 2.5 model. A 250 horsepower 3.5 outperforms the Malibu by fifty horses, but starts at around $1,500 more.

You could pull any of these three cars out of a hat and you’d probably be happy with the purchase. But the Taurus is arguably the best all-around choice for the price.

Yes, it is. It still drives great and gets good gas mileage. Other than some slight damage to the door, it is in very good condition. The interior is immaculate.

accountCircle Lisa F

Yes it is a great running car never had any problems with it except for an ignition switch problem built to last.

accountCircle Nikki L

Kind of other than the fact of the ignition switch going out or having to reset the car because the security sensors triggers for no reason.

It's a decent vehicle just has some issues that makes it hard to do maintenance on it if u don't have money to take it to a shop.

accountCircle Caprice H

Surprisingly roomy! The Malibu Maxx is a pseudo-hatchback, meaning that it can carry a staggering cargo load if needed.
It's a reliable vehicle that is big enough to transport my family. But not comfortably, and the gas mileage is mediocre at best. Also, it's old enough to start really showing wear.

The electrical isn't the best, our lights burn out quicker because of it and the lights will sometimes flicker in tune with the music that is playing. The car does get pretty good gas mileage and travels long distances really well especially when fully loaded. This car has been very reliable and a great first car.

My vehicle is a nice looking midsize car with a hatchback for plenty of trunk and space. I love the moonroof, tinted windows and that most people say it looks like a very nice sports like looking car. It has not needed very many repairs at all despite the miles we put on it. Gas mileage is the best we only need about $50 in gas every 2 weeks and this car is drove everyday multiple times to different places.

When I first got my car, I was really in love with it. Until I started driving it and it was really wide and somewhat long. I have always had smaller fast cars and it was different. The car performance itself is fantastic. Brake system is amazing, it gets up and goes when you need it to, over all just a fantastic car. I have only had to repair one thing on it in the year I have owned it and that was just a control arm. It is a very reliable car, nice radio, nice sound system, it rides smooth, its even really nice and open and comfortable for long trips.

Chevy Malibu-Power Steering
This vehicle tends to have issues with the power steering. Due to problems with the electricity and computer system, the power steering will often go out and leave me having to steer manually. Of course this is rather dangerous but keeping a regular check of the battery and other electronic components has kept the problem under control.

It is comfortable car, reliable, and fairly roomy. It seems to do well on gas mileage. The gas tank sensor is broken and is a common issue with the Malibu. It is easy to use all controls, and travels well. The heat and air conditioning work well and either cool quickly or heat up quickly.

Dependable But A Bit Noisy
Comfortable ride and ample trunk storage, but runs loud and can shake the car when moving above certain speeds. Heat and AC work quickly, but do not effectively reach the back seats without vents. Has not stalled during ownership and reliably reaches every destination.

It has been very reliable. I've owned the car since 2008 and have never had any major issues. Just normal maintenance.
Love that I can pack a lot of stuff in it. Not the greatest in the winter. Wish it was all wheel drive.

My feelings about my auto.
Great looking car with a good miles per gallon and good ride. Easy to maintain and no real problems since I purchased it. Very happy with all features in the car also. Would buy another one if and when I need it. All replacement items purchased for this auto seem to be at a reasonable price point also.

It is a good looking car. Not bulky with plenty of interior room.
I'm pretty happy with my car. It's a good size so parking is not a problem. Plenty of room inside for passengers.

Everyone should know that for winter weather the driver should put extra weight in the back.
I love my malibu. It's actually the Maxx. Which is a hatchback. I love it for it's extra storage space.

Others should know that it's a dependable car that hasn't given my family and I any issues.
I like that it's a dependable car, it takes me to school or any other place that I need to go. I don't think there is anything I dislike about it except maybe it needs a paint job.
