2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer Review: A Reliable, Roomy, and Affordable Family Vehicle

Gilbert Smith
Jan 3, 2023

The 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer is a spacious, powerful SUV that’s affordable and cheap to maintain. It might be a little too fuel-thirsty to serve as a daily-driver, but it’s just the thing for long road trips.

Front angle view.
likeFilled The Good
Remarkably spacious and powerful with more cargo room than you’ll likely ever need. The 2003 Trailblazer is affordable, and cheap to maintain.
dislikeFilled The Bad
While the SUV is excellent for long road trips and furniture hauls, sluggish steering and mediocre fuel economy make the 2003 Trailblazer less than ideal for a daily-driver.

Is the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – The roomy, powerful 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer’s original powertrain and transmission have held up surprisingly well over the years.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – An Extended model packs enough cargo you could just about park a compact car in the back. The seating is comfortable and spacious, but loses a couple points for cheap-feeling trim materials.
  • Reliability 8/10 – If you can find one with under 150,000 miles on the odometer, it won’t take much more than regular oil changes to get it to 200,000.
  • Safety 6/10 – You’ll feel safe in such a big SUV, but Insurance Institute for Highway Safety scores are mediocre and safety tech is outdated.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – The 2003 Trailblazer is a land yacht. 15/20 miles to the gallon, city/highway, isn’t the worst fuel economy we’ve seen in a full-size SUV, but it’ll have you wondering if you should walk for any trip under two miles.
  • Value 8/10 – With pricing starting at under two grand, the biggest problem with the 2003 Trailblazer is that it’s hard to find a seller willing to part with one in good condition.

She's definitely a tough vehicle.
I love my vehicle. We have towed 3, 500 pounds on a trailer with it and it hauled it all with no problem. It rides smooth. I haven't had any issues with it besides for wear and tear from old age (transmission, relays, fuses popping). The only thing that I really don't like about my vehicle is the brake light housing keeps going out in it. We have changed it out so many times, but other than that, my vehicle has been great and still running strong with 233, 000+ miles on her.

Comfortable, reliable and Smart Buy
This is my first time driving a Chevy and it was already considered old when purchased but just had to have it. 4-Dr with liftgate and tailgate. Leather interior with front pass/driver heated seats. Controls on steering wheel, CD/Tape player, sunroof, back passengers has own A/C and heat controls. Automatic seats and windows. Back row folds down for large loads. It drives well not too many problems just keep up with regular maintenance and wear and tear. It gets me where I need to be.

Safe, Reliable, Sturdy, Tough
Gas Gauge doesn't work. Speedometer has messed up before. Miles per gallon is pretty bad and Air conditioning not working. However, it runs great. Seats are comfy, very spacious, sturdy, tough, can get me through the Michigan winters. 4 wheel drive works great.

Chevy Trailblazer is a great SUV to drive on long trips for a tall person.
The Trailblazer is a great vehicle. Comfortable, easy to drive and hardly any upkeep problems. We drove it from Texas to Missouri and Kentucky several times in the past and it was great. Now we do not drive that far very often.

Abs issues in a trailblazer.
Only real issue I have ever had with it is sometimes the abs likes to come on and stay on for days. Other than that it's a good vehicle.

It is my work/ social vehicle. It is for my comfort and convenience.
It is large enough to transport my 3 dogs. I can haul a lot of things. It is not very fuel efficient.

It's easy to maintain,it's a great family car and it's not costly to maintain.
First of all it's easy to maintain, you can change defective parts easily. The gas consumption is just right. It's spacious. It drives just great.

I love how my car drives. I love the size. I love the room inside
The handling of the car on roads. Runs great and rides smooth.

The true review of a trailblazer.
Something wrong with front end so always buying tires and always needs wheel alignment. My Trailblazer is always overheating for some reason, even on cold days. I have had to sink so much money into this vehicle and it still needs work done to it. The worst vehicle I have ever owned.

When I first bought the vehicle I loved it. It had everything that I could ever want. Since then, it has been awful. I have had to fix almost everything on the car at least once and I still do not have working cruise control, air conditioning or four-wheel drive.
It is a piece of junk. I will never buy another Chevrolet!

DO NOT RECOMMEND
I is spacious, but that is it, it is a gas hog, and every time I get something fixed, something else breaks, and the there are several things that break more than once in an unreasonable amount of time such as the fuel pump, water pump, air condition compressor, brakes and more.

Bad car it's a lemon and has no fuse box
Comfort wise it's perfect. They only problem I have is the person I bought the car from ripped out the entire fuse box. That makes the car a little on the hazardous side to drive. The gas mileage is not that good either I am always at the gas station

This 03 trailblazer has NO problems with transmission, suspension including lower ball joints and control arms , shocks and drive axels, speakers, rear gate actuator, because I replaced them all !! The only problem I have with it is 4/4 front axel locking housing, and that’s only$300.for the new part I’m doing the work my self. Not bad for 160.000 miles. The rear ac kills the battery if it is not turned off before the car is shut off.
I like how the vehicle has 3 rows/7 seats for passengers. It has quite a bit of space, but the gas mileage could definitely be better. I also like the anti-lock brakes: they are a must.

What Do Critics Say About the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer?

Edmunds had strong praise for the Trailblazer’s powerful engine but felt that the steering was a bit sluggish. They found the interior to be spacious but bland.

Consumer Reports‘ findings weren’t far off from Edmunds’, praising the engine and spacious third-row seating, while criticizing the slow steering and cheap-feeling interior trim. Additionally, they found the acceleration and fuel economy underwhelming.

Kelley Blue Book users found the Trailblazer to be low-maintenance and fun to drive, but added to the consensus that the acceleration could be better.

What Common Problems Does the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer Have?

Electrical issues are the most common source of complaint for the 2003 Trailblazer, with recent reports pointing to deteriorating wire coating. This may not be atypical of older vehicles and is usually a simple matter of wear and tear, but be prepared to replace some wiring at some point.

The transmission has held up remarkably well over the years, but it has been two decades since the SUV first hit the market, so expect a few issues here and there. The most common powertrain complaints have to do with fluid leaks and the SUV locking up while in 4WD mode.

Cracked fuel tanks have led to leakage in a number of units. Drivers report being told that there is a recall in effect, but it is not on file on the NHTSA website, and many owners state that their VIN was not included. Rate of incidence here is low, the lack of a comprehensive solution, is worrying.

There are 9 recalls on file for the 2003 Trailblazer with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which isn’t bad for such an old vehicle.

How Long Will the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer Last?

Older Trailblazers will cost around $500 a year to take care of, according to RepairPal. Of the more common repairs the most expensive will be an oil pump replacement starting at $1,480.

Most sources will estimate that the 2003 Trailblazer should last around 200,000 with adequate maintenance. With excellent maintenance you’ll do a little more, of course, and if the previous owner was lax, you might not hit that number.

accountCircle Todd E

Very reliable. There have been almost no issues. The only continuing issue is that the speedometer doesn't work but I use a GPS to track speed so that isn't an issue

accountCircle Guadalupe P

So far my trailblazer has been reliable but I have only had it for about 2 months now. It does not have any major problems, the only problem with mine is the only air setting that works, the one that determines the amount of air/heat, is level 4.

accountCircle Caitlin G

We bought our Chevy trailblazer used and haven't had a single mechanical issue in almost 6 months of having it. H

accountCircle Sebastian B

It's very reliable. The only thing is small things like spark plugs need changing out, which is being replaced right now.

accountCircle Rachel O

It is reliable,4 wheel drive works every time, gets me where I want to go and towing is good also. Have towed a boat and utility trailer with no problem

accountCircle Stacie F

It is a reliable car the only thing it does consume a lot of gas. I did have to replace some parts but that's because I put in a lot of miles into it. The pieces aren't expensive but getting a mechanic to do the job is the problem.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is basic but adequate for a 2003 SUV, with an AM/FM radio, CD, and cassette player.

Safety features cover the usual for vehicles in this era: anti-lock brakes, full airbags, daytime running lamps. The higher trim levels were initially sold with a year of OnStar.

Is the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer a Good Value?

If you’re looking for a 2003 Trailblazer in the 150,000 mile range, the SUV is pretty affordable. At the low end you can find an LT for as low as $2,369, while a Trailblazer LTZ can go up to $4,764. Since you’ll most likely get another 50,000 miles out of it, that comes out to less than a dime a mile, which ain’t bad.

What are the Different Models of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer?

There are three different trim models available, with the LS and LT being offered in standard and EXT models. EXT being short for Extended, referring to the longer wheelbase and third-row seating. Onboard features are otherwise the same, but you get seating for seven instead of five.

The entry-level LS features:

  • Cloth seat trim
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Power windows and door locks
  • PASSLock theft deterrent
  • Full color-keyed carpeting

The mid-range LT adds:

  • Remote keyless entry
  • Front fog lights
  • Heated mirrors
  • Premium cloth trim seating

With the top-of-the-line LTZ, you’re also getting:

  • Leather seats
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • 17″ aluminum wheels
  • Leather wrapped steering wheel

What Engines Come In the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer?

  • In the standard models you’re getting a 4200 SFI inline-six Vortec engine delivering 275 lb.-ft. of torque and 275 horsepower. This is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and can be configured in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
  • With an Extended model you can go with the standard i6, or you can upgrade to the Vortec 5300 V8, which goes up to 325 lb.-ft. of torque and 290 horsepower. Your transmission and configuration options are the same in either engine.

What Colors Does the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer?

You’ll have to search far and wide to find anyone who’s unhappy with the 2003 Trailblazer’s spacious cabin, although the cheap-feeling interior materials have earned some knocks.

After twenty years of service, the real question is whether the suspension has held up. The NHTSA has just 47 suspension complaints on file in total, meaning that the suspension system will probably outlast the transmission, so there are no worries here.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer Have?

With the seats up, you get 41 cubic feet of storage space in a standard 2003 Trailblazer. You can just about double that by putting the seats down for 80.1 cubic feet.

Extended models actually have less room in the back, offering just 22.3 cubic feet of space with the seats up. But that goes up to 100.2 with the seats down. There are pickup trucks that don’t offer that much space for the load. Whichever model you go with, you’ll have no problem with basic packing and hauling.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The Trailblazer was actually introduced in the 90s as a trim line for Chevy’s S-10. The 2003 was part of the first proper generation, launching with the 2002 model and retiring with the 2009 edition, when the SUV would go on hiatus until the 2021 model year.

2002: The Chevy Trailblazer launched with a four wheel drive system, independent front suspension, and a factory equipped detachable towing hitch.

2003: Chevrolet added larger 22-gallon fuel tanks to the 2003 model, and they added child-seat anchors to the EXTs.

2004: They dropped the LTZ trim level for 2004 but made no fundamental changes to the SUV.

2005: The Trailblazer got a visual redesign for 2005 with revised badging and some chrome interior accents. The seats were redesigned for improved comfort, as well.

2006: Chevrolet addressed road noise complaints in 2006 with improved sound insulation. The SUV got some visual tweaks to the front and rear fascias, as well.

2007: For 2007, Chevrolet added dual-zone air conditioning to the LT trim level. A few under-the-hood tweaks supposedly produce a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency.

2008: Side curtain airbags were standardized for 2008.

2009: Bluetooth phone connectivity was added for 2009.

How Does the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer Compare to the Competition?

The 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee prices in around the same range as the Trailblazer, with a Laredo coming in at a fair purchase price of $3,737. Jeeps have a reputation for being high-maintenance, and the 2003 Grand Cherokee will run you around a hundred bucks more than the Trailblazer in annual upkeep.

A 2003 Ford Explorer generally sells for much less than the Trailblazer or the Grand Cherokee, with a fair market price around $2,895 for an XLT, although it’s not as roomy as a Trailblazer.

2003 was a good year for SUVs, and you won’t have to look too long to find one in decent shape. All three of these models have something to offer, but the low maintenance costs and extra space make the Trailblazer a clear winner if you’re looking for a family vehicle.

Great family vehicle for on or off-road adventures.
This vehicle is great for space and convenience. Third row seating has come in handy for a large family of 6 like mine. The kids have plenty of room, drink holders and hook ups for their gadgets and still a space in the back for their stuff. The 4 wheel drive came in handy on the snowy winter roads of Kentucky. I have to say I have had problems with the transmission, and front end.

The trailblazer is a great vehicle to own. I have the extended version, so there is plenty of room to put things in the back or you can leave the seats up and have third row seating. I've towed with my and it performs excellent. It's a comfortable vehicle. Plenty of leg space in the backs seats. Has OnStar, heated side mirrors and back hatchback does also. Have climate control from the front to the back, so everyone has access to regulate the temperature where they are sitting. Oh course, the normal stuff, am/FM radio, CD player, etc.. This vehicle is very reliable. In the winters of 30 below plus, it starts right up with no problems and goes through the snow great. I love my trailblazer, best vehicle I've ever bought

Pros and cons of a Chevy trailblazer.
I am 6'1 and as a tall woman I need a lot of legroom. This car has a lot of legroom. The room in the car is excellent, as I did a lot of road trips long distance and had a lot of room for the luggage. The gas mileage highway is good-about 27 mpg on the highway. If you are not speeding you get good mileage. I have cloth seats, as I lived in Arizona, and my kids did not burn up from the leather seats. The problems of this vehicle is that two of the sensors stick and there is not a problem. The anti lock brake sensor sticks. It costs about 30.00 to have the sensor checked and unstuck. Getting to the spare tire is a bit difficult. You should ask the dealer to show you how to get your spare out or you will have difficulty. Other than that, I love my truck, it is a safe comfortable ride.

Chevy Trailblazer LT..Dependable, Comfortable
My Chevy Trailblazer LT is very comfortable and has great options. Most importantly it is reliable. I did have some light repair work. I had to change coil packs at approximately 200,000 miles and soon after had to rebuild the transmission, But my experience with this SUV has been very positive. The one thing I am not pleased with is that the driver's seat gets very uncomfortable after just a few hours of drive time, however, the vehicle does have very many miles, so as a new truck, i'm sure it was fine.

It is a reliable vehicle that will last a very long time if it is maintained correctly and on time. It does very well on gas for being a sports utility vehicle. The only thing I would really change about it is I wish it would not take so very long to warm up after I turn on the vehicle. But other than that problem, it has been a very reliable vehicle. The Trailblazer is a very dependable vehicle
My Trailblazer is an SUV. It is large enough to haul my family, pets and everything else. We take vacations using it and it's never let me down. It also has 4 wheel drive so Jersey snow is no problem.

My SUV is safe and reliable. IF anything needs repaired or updated, it is relatively inexpensive and easy to do.
I love the size and easy driving ability of my car. It drives like a car, but looks like a truck/SUV. It is reliable and basically runs like new after 15 years.

Durable in times I need it to be, and reliable everyday!
The space of the interior is nice to have along with the HVAC throughout the inside is a good feature too. My vehicle has been drove through some rough terrain and is still going. Some of the 'extra's' like the stereo and the HVAC control for the rear of the vehicle have stopped working along with the speedometer but now with all the Bluetooth options I can still have control. The durability of the car is awesome though.

No rust, Good body and interior, very good condition for it's age, low miles
Vehicle is in good condition for it's age. Like it has 4 wheel drive if I need it. Dislike having things go wrong I have to repair for no reason.

Perfect size and comfortable, reliable vehicle.
This is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned! The size is perfect, with the extended third row seating. The only major problems I have had with it are cosmetic issues mainly. The visor on the passenger side is currently not on because it keeps falling off despite my husband’s best efforts to reattach it. On the driver’s seat the plastic panel on the side keeps falling off. The middle console piece that is supposed to click and hold it shut has been replaced but it broke again and I haven't fixed it. Overall I love this car and truly wish that they still made them. This car is currently at 223,000 miles and going strong!

Chevy trailblazer: reliable and long lived.
My Chevy trailblazer is a great vehicle. Even though it is 15 years old it runs great. It's a very reliable vehicle and I have had very few if any problems besides normal wear and tear. It has a 6 CD changer and radio. One drawback to it being an older vehicle is that it does not have an auxiliary jack.

I bought it because my mother would not let me drive a sedan.
I like all of the room I have to haul things, but I don't like how much money I have had to spend on repairs. Most foreign cars last for twice as long as Chevy products, so I don't think I will be buying another General Motors car next time.

There is a ton of trunk space for travelling, grocery shopping or toting kids stuff.
I love that it is easy to maneuver. I love the trunk space. I dislike that key hole is only on drivers side door.

It is a great off road vehicle, but is a great get you to work vehicle also.
I love the roominess of this vehicle. It can fit 3 car seats and 2 booster seats comfortably. I don't like that it is getting old and I am having LOTS of issues including transmission and 4 wheel drive.

Great car for large families and traveling!
It has been a very reliable car. Not very good on gas mileage but rides comfortably great Storage and seats 7. Since it is older I have replaced all 4 window motors and relays within the past 4 yrs. The oil light and radiator light came on simultaneously and I had to repair a part of that. I am not certain the mechanical name of what was repaired.

The true review of a trailblazer.
Something wrong with front end so always buying tires and always needs wheel alignment. My Trailblazer is always overheating for some reason, even on cold days. I have had to sink so much money into this vehicle and it still needs work done to it. The worst vehicle I have ever owned.

My particular model tended to have electrical issues.
I like the fact that it has great Suspension that gives me a smooth ride. I don't like the fact that the gas mileage is not so great. Overall it's roomy and very reliable vehicle.

It's a 2003 olive green Chevy trailblazer,4 wheel drive
I purchased my car used but I fell in love with it instantly. It handles great, it has a sporty look, it seats 5 comfortably. It gets ok gas mileage. I've had to replace a few parts on it but nothing major. All in all a good vehicle. I would recommend this make and model to other potential buyers
