2018 Chevrolet Traverse Review: Dependable Large SUV With Reasonable Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 10, 2023

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse lasts around 250,000 miles with some transmission software and rattling noise issues. At $18,475 to $30,125, it’s a good value for a large SUV with enough room for a large family and their luggage.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is very smooth, the cabin is quiet and the stereo system has a lot of features for the money.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Advanced safety tech is only available on the high-end models, the steering feels loose and there’s a lot of cheap plastic on the dash.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2018 is a good year for the Chevrolet Traverse, yet it’s still not a leader compared to other SUVs on the market, giving it an average score. Owner reviews praise the spacious cabin, smooth suspension, as well as the quiet interior.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are improved from earlier years, the seats offer good supportive cushions, cargo space is also good for its size.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no widespread mechanical problems on the 2018 Chevy Traverse. Buyers should avoid models from 20092014 due to engine problems. Models from 20152022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is worse than other large SUVs since the Traverse only has a V6 engine while many competitors have stronger V8s.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2018 Traverse is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests with a standard rearview camera and Teen Driver mode. Optional upgrades include forward collision alert, lane keep assist, along with adaptive cruise control.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 22 MPG giving 418 miles of range from the 19 gallon tank. Gas costs are $64 cheaper than average at $191 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2018 Traverse is cheaper than other full size SUVs, although it also depreciates quickly, giving it an average value score.

Chevy Traverse'-the SUV for busy families with lots of stuff to haul around
Extremely smooth ride. Lots of get up and go when needed while driving. Love the tech options'-like the XM radio, OnStar, wireless communication with my phone, text and calls read to me while driving. Third row seat folds down for room for everything from luggage to bikes. Bucket seats are very comfortable. Love this car!

It's great for traveling long distances
My vehicle is very spacious. Great gas mileage and has decent speed on highways. Great vehicle to take cross country. The best part is that upkeep is very low on it. Even after traveling 6k miles from Alaska to Florida was the best for it. I love it and it's really good

One of the most important things people should know is that it fits 7 people and still has a more spacious trunk then a tahoe
It's spacious; all the features of a full size SUV; has all the features i love, warm/cool seat

Great family car. Sporty. I have 3 kids and love the room without having a minivan. It does seem to jump and tries to stop at times

Great vehicle we would definitely buy again.
We absolutely love this vehicle. We have had no issues thus far. The vehicle runs and looks great. The vehicle gets great gas mileage. We upgraded from the equinox because with two children in car seats we needed more space. The vehicle has tons of space and the third row comes in handy.

Beautiful vehicle with major issues
No, We have nothing but issues with our 2018 Traverse since we have bought it. A few of the more major things things... At 28,000 miles we had to have a completely new transmission put in through warranty after they tried to do some fixes on it that ultimately didn't work. This all started from my vehicle shuttering for a long time beforehand and I finally put my foot down firmly. They also have had to rebuild our third row seat since it squeeked the minute we bought it. We have had issues with the display screen roughly a year in, but one thing that is a must we found out is to make sure if your phone is plugged in especially an Apple that the cord is brand new looking without any cracks. If there are splits in the cord at all for some reason the system is just super touchy. There have also been a lot of other minor things that have had to get fixed. The car itself is super roomy inside for 3 rows, but the major issues take over as we all want a dependable car. My husband and I don't fully trust it now.

Trust worthy car
Iv bought the traverse looked like the right car for our needs at 1,700 miles the transmission failed still not working right after three tries at 12000 miles started using three quarts of oil between service gm is saying that's acceptable cruise control malfunctions the phone gives me someone elses name and number instead of who's calling navigation system sucks it is not a reliable car stay away from it first new car In 30 years i have to carry extra oil with me

Doors Creak
Love the way it drives and looks. However all doors creek. When I brought it to the dealership I was informed it is a defect and he was surprised it took 18 months for the creaking to start. I was informed it cannot be fixed and is something I’ll have to love with. Unacceptable! Do not buy this vehicle- looks good from far but trust me it’s far from good!

Problems with my 2018 Traverse
Radio stops working randomly without any reason, brakes always squeak and it's been confirmed that there is nothing wrong with it, the fake chrome trim is peeling and cannot be repaired, the key fob doesn't always work, the parking brake doesn't always release, and cloth trim stains easily.
accountCircle Court L
I love that it has air conditioned seats and steering wheel
They don't have the best seats for car seat installs. I mean I made it work and had it done by professional to get the best fit. I do like that they have an option for two captains chairs in the second row and a bench seat in the back row. I love the heated and air conditioned seat. It's safety features are unmatched- I just don't love the carseat thing

2018 Chevy traverse not what was expected after owning previous traverse.
Does not have the power of previous traverse owned. Has difficulty in towing. Slips on wet ramp. Also will not shift into park at turn off. Stays running and beeping. Brought into the shop for several band aid repairs. Dealer thinks it will be a recall item in the future.

We’re on our third engine for our 2015 traverse Fortunately GM picked up the tab as it was under warranty. 2nd engine (Refurbished) leaked oil because the new pistons didn’t fit in the previously used casing. Had to add 5L between oil changes. Rear portion of the conditioner also had leak. Only good thing is that it’s spacious and comfortable...when it’s not in the shop.

Very poor transmission quality.
I have had transmission issues since I bought it used with 17,000 miles. The room of the SUV is great. Very nicely styled SUV but the actual quality of the riding is poor. Very poor shifting. I cannot wait to trade in soon. Had the transmission fixed and I still have issues. Very poor car choice on my end since there are many reviews stating the same complaint.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Traverse?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is a practical alternative to traditional body-on-frame full size SUVs, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Traverse at 3.2/5, praising the passenger room throughout the cabin, but doesn’t like the weak engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Traverse a 4.3/5, enjoying the safety technology, but doesn’t like the low towing capacity.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Chevy Traverse include a shift to park message, the stereo system freezing, as well as rattling noises from the front suspension components. Overall, these problems are similar to other large SUVs, with average repair bills as the Traverse ages.

A shift to park message is the most widespread complaint from 2018 Traverse owners at around 25,000 miles. There are two sources of the problem including a parking switch failure so the body control module doesn’t know it’s in park, or transmission software issues. Changing out the parking switch costs around $400, while updating the software is usually free at dealerships.

The stereo system freezing also shows up on some Traverse models in the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates for the touchscreen infotainment system which improves the overall reliability. Most dealerships will install the updates for free on such a new vehicle, while others charge around $100.

Rattling noises from the front suspension components have also been reported on the Traverse in the first 5,000 miles. Usually, when the suspension is rattling it’s a sign of something being loose. Diagnosing and fixing the noise costs around $150, depending on local labor rates.

There are two recalls on the 2018 Chevy Traverse, which is better than many other SUVs. The most serious recall is for missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator endcap which can cause a transmission leak. Chevy will replace any missing bolts for free. The other recall covers side curtain airbags, which Chevrolet will also replace.

How Long Will the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse Last?

A well-maintained 2018 can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other large SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $526 per year.

As a used 2018 Chevy Traverse reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the brake hoses for $150, heater core costing $800, as well as the power seat control module which costs $300.

accountCircle Brittany J

Yes it is very reliable. I have had no issues with my traverse. It runs smoothly and I love the technology in it that lets me know how much gas, oil, etc it has so I can continue to make it reliable.

accountCircle Brianna K

Yes, it is very reliable. The only issue we have had is some vibrating when you accelerate. The dealership has not found a source of the Issue. However, it drives great and we have had no other pertinent issues.

accountCircle Allison W

Yes the traverse is very reliable. It has something you can turn on when the roads are icy to give you less of a chance of slipping.

accountCircle Kayla L

It is a very reliable car no problems at all I am able to drive very steady and the car is an AWD so I can drive in the snow to it is really for all weathers.

accountCircle Jokena B

We haven't had any problems aside from a noise it tends to makes when on the highway or anything over 45.

accountCircle Tina E

It has been a very reliable vehicle so far. No issues at all. Best tires on a new vehicle. We took this truck on a 4500 mile trip this summer & we got great gas mileage with plenty of room for our family of 5.

accountCircle Dahiana M

Safety wise it is reliable. But not with electronics. Plus, it does not have a button for the trunk. It has to be open from outside.

accountCircle Ashley T

I have only had the vehicle for about 4 months, but so far it has been very reliable. No issues, and it was purchased as a certified pre owned.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 7-inch touchscreen which offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen along with a more powerful stereo system.

Safety technology is good since the Traverse has a standard rearview camera, OnStar, rear seat reminder, as well as teen driver mode to limit speed and volume levels.

Optional advanced safety features include a surround-view parking camera, rear parking sensors, rearview camera mirror, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward automatic emergency braking, as well as adaptive cruise control.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Chevy Traverse is a decent value since it offers decent reliability for a large SUV. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $18,625 to $30,425, with more expensive models being certified pre owned. It’s cheaper than a Chevy Suburban or Ford Expedition. When new, the price range was $29,930 to $52,600. Depreciation is worse than other large SUVs, losing about 14% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Chevy Traverse?

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is powered by a relatively weak 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque while getting up to 22 MPG. This engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Performance is slow, taking 7.5 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chevy Traverse Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chevy Traverse?

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is a comfortable SUV, with a spacious and well-appointed interior. The front seats are roomy and offer plenty of head- and legroom, and the second and third rows are also spacious and comfortable.

The seats are upholstered in high-quality materials and are supportive, making for a comfortable ride even on longer trips. The cabin is also well-insulated from road and wind noise, making for a quiet and relaxing driving experience.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chevy Traverse Have?

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse has a total of 98.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. With the rear seats in their upright position, the Traverse has 23 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, and 57.8 cubic feet behind the second row.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Chevy Traverse was launched for the 2018 model year.

2015: Siri Eyes-Free added to all models.

2016: New base LS model introduced, 4G LTE Wifi hotspot added.

2017: Premier model replaces the LTZ.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new engines, technology, and styling.

2020: V6 engine is now standard on all models.

2021: New Chevy Safety Assist package offered.

How Does the Chevy Traverse Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is a very good large SUV, offering decent reliability ratings paired with a lot of passenger room while still being reasonably affordable to own long-term.

The GMC Acadia is a slightly smaller SUV available in the same price range. Interior materials are nicer in the GMC Acadia with more luxurious leather choices, while the Chevy Traverse has more passenger room. We recommend the Chevy Traverse since you get a lot more practicality for roughly the same price.

The Ford Explorer is another large SUV which costs around $500 more. Standard safety technology is better in the Ford Explorer, while the Chevy Traverse offers better space for passengers. We recommend the Ford Explorer since they are slightly more reliable as they age.

I absolutely love my Chevy traverse. Believe it or not, this is my first Chevrolet. It is the perfect size for myself, family and xxl dogs. Excellent gas mileage. I especially like the program on my phone that I can track the gas mileage, oil, etc...

Great space inside, very comfortable.
It's a great car. It drives well and it looks great. It has enough room inside of it to fit 7 people and even has a little trunk space in the back, but it's not as long as a suburban or Tahoe. I can flip the back seats down and it has way more room than most SUVs.

Great vehicle for our growing family.
It drives very smooth. We have the most basic version of this vehicle (so no bells & whistles) but it gets the job done. The gas mileage has been higher than we were anticipating for an SUV, for both highway & in town. We would like a little more room for storage inside behind the 3rd row seat (with 3 teenagers there's never enough room).

It is great for a new growing family. We bought ours after having our first baby and it is so smooth and family friendly. It fits all of babies necessities such as strollers, bags, car seats and anything else you can think of. The drive is smooth. The car gets excellent gas mileage and is easy to park. There are great safety features like an alert to check the back seat, and a blind spot alert.

Great vehicle for big families!
We have a large family and the legroom is great! We were able to have 2 car seats in the middle row next to each other and still have access to the rear seat. The ride is smooth. Apple carplay is a lifesaver making everything hands free. We love the waze app on apple carplay. The only drawback is not much room for storage in the trunk.
accountCircle Christin L on May 27, 2021
There is nothing extraordinary about the Chevy traverse.
Vehicle electrical system always malfunctions, along with constantly replacing fob battery. Aside from the issues there is room for. People. But not much storage space. The entertainment system is just ok. It would be better to play video or show texts.

Whether towing our boat or traveling the traverse is a solid choice.
Had issues with the transmission, particularly at lower speeds while shifting gears. Also, had some leaking gaskets on the transmission. All repairs were covered under warranty. Repair work was roughly a 17 hour job. Overall, minus the transmission repairs, the traverse is a very smooth riding car/SUV with plenty of room for a family of 4. The third row seat is adequate for shorter trips but not ideal for long vacation type journeys. Overall I recommend the vehicle.

Chevy traverse, comfortable, stylish and handles well.
Drives well. Very comfortable. Easy to travel with. Durable. Leather is well made. Does not sit low to the ground. Worth the money. Handles well in the snow. The redline model has many extras. XM radio available. Good gas mileage. Lots of cargo room in the back.

The third row seating has plenty of floor space and they fold down!
For starters, the inside of this SUV is comparable to that of a Tahoe or Yukon without the bulky exterior. With the fold down third-row seating I have all the room I need for groceries, bags, and baby gear. The captain seats in the second row were a major selling point for me, each passenger can have their own space and car seats fit perfectly. The heated seats in the wintertime are an added bonus! All the extra space does not affect the great gas mileage this SUV gets, I average between 26-30 mpg and can fill up for $30. I chose this year model because of its sleek new design and added cargo space, I love my traverse and highly recommend as an excellent family car.

Only problems with the traverse is the handling in heavy snow, it slips or loses grip sometimes. Other than that it performs great. It fires up when I start it and has a very smooth ride. The features I have are push to start, ignition stops at every stop to save gas, cloth seats, satellite radio, anti lock brakes.

Love my Chevy traverse more than any car I have owned.
Sometimes when putting my SUV in park and turning the car off it tells me the car is not in park even though it is. Other than that, I have had no issues and love the car. It is extremely spacious, I have 3 kids and they fit with plenty more space. The trunk space is also super good for an SUV. I can fit my double stroller and some groceries in it.

I love the size of the vehicle, it gives us plenty of room to grow our family. It a reliable car that gets great gas mileage. The ride of the car is smooth. The only thing that I dislike is the amount of road noise you can hear inside the vehicle.

Love my red four door traverse with leather interior.
I love my traverse! I have drive. For two years now and it runs great and is very comfortable. The front and rear cameras are my favorite feature makes parking in tight spots so much easier. The rear seats fold down for additional hauling room. The two features that I find annoying are minor, but I hate where the parking brake button is located and that you have to turn the cruise control on before you can set it. But overall we love it and would recommend.

Traverse: the perfect everyday family vehicle.
The traverse is a smooth ride. My teenage boys have ample leg room in the second and third row seats. The dark colored cloth interior is durable and easy to maintain and keep clean. The one push open on rear hatch makes it easy to open when my hands are full. The storage space is perfect with the third row seat is up, but can be maximized even further by laying the seats down for larger loads. I also am enjoying the keyless entry. The simple push of a button keeps my from having to dig through my purse to open the doors. Overall we have been happy with this car. This is the second traverse we have owned. The first one was a 2011 model. Both have been great family vehicles.

The space inside is amazing!
I love the space inside the vehicle while the overall size is manageable for driving and parking. The USB ports have been wonderful for the kids. The only thing I don't like is it is hard to see a car that is slightly behind you on the driver side.

Large SUV. Uses apple iplay. Has a secured box in the dashboard.
Love the large space of the car, the leather seats, the technology, safety features, like the light on the mirrors that lights up.

A great family car without the bulk of a suburban.
I love the way this drives! Incredibly smooth handling and good gas mileage. Great family vehicle with easy 3rd row access. Enough storage in the trunk area for groceries or luggage if you are traveling. Plenty of cup holders and USB ports for everyone!

Redesign is a perfect. Would buy again
Love the redesign. New features and cargo room is beyond amazing. Larger inside than a Tahoe. Miss the heated mirrors and the heated back of the driver's seat.

Hidden storage compartment.
I really like this vehicle, it drives smooth and has a lot of room for kids and luggage. The seats are very comfortable. It has a lot of options and safety features, airbags, rear camera, android auto, backup sensors, child safety locks. It also has a deep compartment in the trunk for extra storage.

It's a great car if you have a large family, but don't buy it if you want music playing in the back.
It's a pretty good vehicle. I dislike that there are no speakers for the back seats. The Back camera is great quality, and I like the radio controls!

The perfect family car, Chevrolet traverse 2018.
So far, I have had no problems with my traverse. The only issue I have with it sometimes is the size. It is very large. The backup camera is very helpful. But the space inside is very useful especially for families. Overall a great and safe car for anyone. If you are on an extremely tight budget, I would stay away. This car uses gas very fast.

Best midsize SUV out there!
I absolutely love my car! I wanted the biggest mid size vehicle I could find; I needed the space for my 3 kids and traveling a lot but I also didn't want a vehicle that was terrible on gas. My traverse has been everything I wanted! It's super up to date technology wise, gas is affordable, it rides so smooth and has been reliable since the day I got it, and I'm absolutely obsessed with the look of it. It's beautiful and it's the perfect car for me!

Traverse: the good and the slightly irritating.
Car is reliable and comfortable for the most part. Location of cup holders could be better. It is very wide with large tires so hard to judge curbs and median strips; and difficult to make sharp turns. My last car was an AWD equinox that drove much more like a car than a truck, but had very little cargo space. That was the reason to move to the traverse. Second row club seats are great, cargo area is great. Love the visual screen that shows forward and backward movement--makes parking so much easier. There has been an electronic problem with the parking brake but seems to have been repaired by service. Gets better gas mileage than my equinox. On the whole very pleased with traverse.

My Chevy traverse, it drives comfortably and has room for my family.
My Chevy traverse is awesome, my family fits in it comfortably. It can seat up to 8 people comfortably. It has captain chairs and a long seat in the back. It has good storage in the very back.

Why I love my Chevy traverse so much I bought two!
This is the smoothest ride I have ever driven. You can seat 7 passengers comfortably. Even with the third row in place there is a lot of storage in the back. There is additional storage in the back by lifting a panel, it is like a well. It is pretty much hidden. There is a secret storage place with a USB port behind the radio. The heated seats and remote start were lifesavers in the winter. The rear view mirror can be switched to a camera view and increases the field of vision exponentially. The seats and interior are simply comfortable. I have done a lot of carpooling and sitting in the car waiting for kids. I love this car.

Not only a great looking vehicle but probably the safest on the road.
I was involved in an accident and this vehicle saved my families lives. It is made very well. It has been extremely reliable and it has great interior features. Not only does the traverse look great but it has some the best safety features. It has 360 cameras, lane change indicators, many airbags and an auto lock function for security.

It's a great family car that I feel comfortable driving far distances
I have only had my vehicle for a few months and I love it. I love the size, the color, and the way it runs

Easy handling and undeniable road noise.
Although I like how the traverse handles and rides, I dislike the road noise. The road noise is very noticeable, loud. I would appreciate more space for cargo behind the third row seat also. It is a family friendly vehicle, but if yuh want to go away for a few days, there is not enough cargo room when you are including luggage, bags, outdoor gear/chairs and possibly a cooler or two.
