2019 Chevrolet Traverse Review: Dependable Full Size SUV With Average Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Feb 8, 2023

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse lasts around 250,000 miles with some minor transmission and stereo system issues. At $20,075 to $44,998, it’s a good value for a large SUV with enough room for a big family or tons of cargo.

The suspension is smooth at highway speeds, the cabin is quiet and there’s a lot of technology.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Advanced safety features are only available on the most expensive models, the steering is loose and the dash has cheap plastic buttons.

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a good year for the Chevy Traverse, although it’s still not as nice as some of the competition on the market. Owner reviews praise the roomy cabin, comfortable suspension, along with the quiet cabin.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are reasonably good for a large SUV, the seats are very supportive, cargo space is also very good.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no serious mechanical problems found on the 2019 Traverse. Avoid models from 20092014 since they have engine problems, while models from 20152022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – The standard V6 engine is reasonably quick for a large SUV, although the towing capacity is lower than V8-equipped rivals at up to 5,000 pounds.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2019 Traverse is a safe SUV earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, along with automatic emergency braking.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 22 MPG, giving 426 miles of range from the 19.4 gallon tank. Gas costs are $59 cheaper than average at $196 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is cheaper than many other large SUVs, although rapid depreciation lowers its overall value score slightly.

Roomy and comfortable SUV!
Very reliable and comfortable. Roomy with second row bucket seats and a third row. Never had any problems. Many features like lane assist and blind spot sensors. Rear view camera and backup camera. Touchless trunk opener (using your foot). Has all weather mats on top of carpet so much easier to clean.

Sporty and spacious and wonderful fun to drive wonderful heated leather seats.
No problems and fun to drive and has lots of storage and very reliable. It is sporty and has lots of interior options that I haven't had before. Never had any problems and if I did Chevrolet has a wonderful service department. Makes going to work a whole lot more fun.

Love having USB ports in every row and on each side of the car.
The travers is a great family car. I love the bucket seats in the second row, keeps from having to climb over the seats or letting the seats down. The trunk space is a decent size. Compatible with your smartphones with a touchscreen display. Heat driver and passenger seats. Not great on gas though.
accountCircle Stephanie M
Traverse- great on gas, easy to ride.
Traverse is great on gas for such a larger vehicle. Seats easy to get in and out of. It is easy to move farthest seat up and down to accommodate extra passengers in the back. There are some issues with the seals around windows, you can sometimes hear a whistling sound.
accountCircle Brandy L
Great family vehicle. There is room enough for everyone and everything.
I love this vehicle. The fold down 3rd row seat is very handy and roomier than you might think. I didn't think I would like the keyless entry, but now I won't buy a car without it. My only gripe so far is that the charging ports stop charging when the car is turned off. My husbands truck keeps charging, I wish mine did.
accountCircle Jenn K
This is a great family friendly SUV with 3 rows.
We had a GMC Acadia for over 6 years, but the Acadia became more compact and too expensive. After shopping around for months we were able to get our hands on a basic 2019 Chevy traverse. I didn't like this model in the past because I thought it looked like an egg but the new changes are great! We opted to have the weather proof mats which I find essential with up to 5 kids under the age of 10 in my car each day. The SUV drives great and the 3rd seat is a must for our large fam.

Chevy traverse- great family car especially if you travel.
The seats at first take some breaking in but after that it is a very comfortable vehicle for long road trips. The ride is very smooth, you do not feel as many of the bumps in the road. It is very spacious and having an optional third row is a game changer. The passenger side back seat is also nice because if you have a car seat you do not have to take it out to get to the third row, the whole seat pulls forward for easy access. Having apple play is also nice because I just connect my phone and literally everything is on the screen. The backup view is clear and it has the 360 degree camera which is helpful if you are like me and going from a sports car to a SUV.

Technologically terrific traverse!
Absolutely love my 2019 Chevrolet traverse! I have had it for almost a year and Haven't encountered any problems. Super comfortable seating, lots of legroom, and plenty of space for passengers and cargo. The technology within the car is also amazing! Love the apple car play, digital touch screen display and safety features.

Not for me
I have a 2019 Pearl white PremierTraverse. The Auto Stop is ridiculous. You can’t just turn it off and it has no rhyme or reason to when it shuts off. It makes you hesitate when pulling out from traffic lights and almost causes accidents when waiting for it to crank back up. During test drive of vehicle it never shut off so we weren’t aware it did it. I have wanted to take this vehicle back since buying it. Have put an aftermarket device on but it turns off certain features so took it off. And yes we’ve put it down in the Low mode and pressed the shifter 9 times but so you know how stupid that is when you are running errands around town. And did I mention the $25,000 loss in value whe. I tried to take it back 6 months later?Chevrolet can keep theirTraverse.

Bad transmission
I thought we had bought a car that I could use travel around the country to visit family. This car is comfortable, roomy and gets decent gas mileage but..... After only 5000 miles the transmission is shuddering so badly, it was kind of scary being 1000 miles from home in a car that was not working right. We took it to be looked at, no lights on so they don't know what wrong. It is something I have now found out is a problem with a lot of Chevy traverses.

Transmission trouble from day one
My car has been in the shop four times for Transmission trouble . In fact I had to utilize the Lemon Law To get them them to fix it. They were able to fix it but the problem has reoccurred stay away from this vehicle. This is a big Lemon. It’s sad because it is a beautiful SUV and elegant inside. So now What do I do I can no longer Lemon the car.

Few perks, poor quality, lackluster appeal.
Subpar features and general comfort compared to the previously owned Acadia. The perk to the vehicle is the Wi-Fi hotspot and the screen that elevates on the dash. The auto stop/start will be a forever deal breaker from this point forward with vehicle purchases.

Not Happy w/ my Traverse
I purchased my 2019 Chevy Traverse new and at 50K miles I've already had to have $2800 of major repairs done. I had to repair my Front Exhaust Pipe and Muffler that was not covered by my powertrain warranty that cost $1600 and my bank 1 catalytic converter was cracked and had an exhaust leak that would have cost $1200 to repair. Fortunately, the catalytic converter was covered under my powertrain warranty. Sorry I purchased this vehicle!!!

Big SUV, little practicality.
I have definitely underestimated it is size upon my first purchase. It is a pain to maneuver around the street and trying to find a parking space has proven to be unbearable. It keeps switching off if I stay still too long and once or twice I have taken a while to get started again. For a big car it seems to split it is segments into small compact spaces.
accountCircle Trevor S
Traverse, why should I buy?
Good solid car, no problems. Very reliable and comfortable. Added bonus that it is good on gas. The cloth seats I wasn't sure about, but the comfort and look is great. I love my vehicle very much. Make sure you go with the sunroof option, that makes a big difference.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Traverse?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is a viable alternative to other large SUVs on the market, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Traverse at 3.5/5, praising the upgraded infotainment system, but doesn’t like the cheaper interior materials.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the traverse a 4.3/5, enjoying the passenger room for up to eight passengers, but owners don’t like the low towing capacity.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe include a “shift to park” message on the dash, no sound from the stereo system, along with paint chipping away on the exterior. Overall, these problems are similar to other SUVs, leading to average repair bills as the Traverse ages.

A “shift to park” message is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Chevy Traverse owners at around 25,000 miles. Usually the problem is simply caused by a damaged or stretched transmission shift cable. Replacing the cable is fairly easy, costing around $95, depending on local labor rates.

No sound from the stereo system is another issue reported by Traverse owners in the first 10,000 miles. The first thing to do is restart the vehicle and see if that fixes the sound system. If that doesn’t solve it, then we recommend checking the fuses under the dash for any sign of damaged or blown fuses which power the amplifier. Changing out a fuse costs under $5.

Paint chipping away on the exterior also shows up on some Traverse models at around 18,000 miles. Paint which is improperly cared for will chip away easily due to breakdown from UV light and dirt. The only way to fix chipping paint is by repainting the affected areas, at a cost of $1,000 per panel.

There are three recalls on the 2019 Chevy Traverse, which is similar to most other SUVs on the market from the same year. The most serious recall is for missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator which can cause transmission oil to leak. Chevy will replace the bolts for free on affected models. Other recalls cover airbags, which are common on all vehicles.

How Long Will the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Chevy Traverse can last around 250,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than other large SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $562 per year.

As a used 2019 Chevrolet Traverse reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the window switches for $225, coolant temperature sensor costing $500, along with the radiator hose which costs $575.

accountCircle Kaleah R

I have experiences no problems within the year I have had my traverse. It is been an extremely reliable vehicle.

accountCircle Traci C

accountCircle Melisa R

It is very reliable. We have had no problems. We love it. Very reliable and comfortable. Chevy's are our choice.

accountCircle Steven T

The traverse is reliable I have not had any problems with the vehicle so far. Depending on the driver and where the seat is there are some blind spots.

accountCircle M M

Yes, so far the vehicle is very reliable. It is heavy and feels great to drive. So far, there are no problems with the car. I have no complaints about the car. The auto stop engine is also a great feature.

accountCircle Jaclyn C

It is not reliable. The check engine light comes on, lights flicker, radio and backup camera do not work.

accountCircle Jackie R

They only problems that I wish it would have is it should come with surround parking assist or be able to add it after purchased.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 7-inch MyLink touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s a larger 8-inch touchscreen available as an optional upgrade.

Standard safety technology is basic, offering a rearview camera and teen driver mode which allows you to set volume and speed limits.

Optional advanced safety features found in the driver confidence package include:

  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Forward automatic braking
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Rear camera mirror
  • Forward collision alert
  • Front pedestrian braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross traffic alert

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is a good value since it’s cheaper than many other large SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $20,075 to $44,998, making it cheaper than a Chevy Tahoe or Ford Expedition. When new, the price range was $29,930 to $53,200. Depreciation is a bit worse than other SUVs, losing about 13% of its current value per year.

What Colors Does the Chevy Traverse Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chevy Traverse?

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is a comfortable SUV with seating for up to 8 passengers. It offers a smooth ride, and the seats are generally well-cushioned and supportive. The first two rows offer plenty of room for passengers to stretch out, and the third row is also roomy for adults.

Standard cloth seats are comfortable and supportive, while leather seats are even more comfortable and provide a more premium feel. Additionally, the Traverse also features a quiet and well-insulated cabin, which helps to reduce road noise and makes for a more relaxing ride.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Chevy Traverse came out for the 2018 model year.

2015: Siri Eyes-Free added across the lineup.

2016: 4G LTE WiFi hotspot added, along with a new base LS model.

2017: Premier model introduced to replace the LTZ model.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new engines, styling, and technology.

2021: Upgraded Chevy Safety Assist package added.

How Does the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is a nice full size SUV, it offers a more comfortable ride experience similar to a minivan compared to other large SUVs which are built on a truck-platform.

The GMC Acadia is another large SUV built by General Motors, which is about $1,000 more. Both the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse are built on the same platform, while the interior is nicer in the GMC Acadia. We recommend the GMC Acadia since the added luxury is worth the extra money.

The Ford Explorer is a competitor available for around $1,500 more. Where the Ford Explorer stands out is with better long-term reliability, while the Chevy Traverse offers more passenger room. We recommend the Ford Explorer since ownership costs will be more affordable as it ages.

Trouble from the start.
I bought my 2019 Travers in 2021. It is a good ride, but since I have bought it I have to get a new catalytic converter (warranty) then a new starter, batterie and now it is making noises and sounds like the engine is dropping out. I absolutely love. It is so spacious, especially on the middle sections. I have an 18 month old so it allows for plenty of room for car seat, diaper bag, stroller, etc. It is so comfortable and seems like luxury vehicle even though I bought the base model. Love how it sits high off ground. Convenient keyless entry and back hutch open and close entry.

Our family of 8 loves this car!
My Chevy traverse is perfect for our large family. The 3rd row backseat sits our older boys very comfortably when we are traveling as a family. I love the ability to attach my jus to my belt loop or purse and start it up with a push of a button. I rarely forget or lose my keys. Overall, it drives very nicely and I feel safe on the road. Safe enough that we have taught our 2 teenage drivers in it. I would definitely buy another traverse in the future and would recommend it.

The compartment in the floor is awesome. The touchscreen radio.
This vehicle is so awesome! I love it so much! I am so glad we bought this vehicle. It is everything we were looking for and more. It rides so smooth, almost gliding along the road like, and tunes out the outside noise so well. The radio has so many options and the touch screen is pretty cool. The buttons on the steering wheel to change the station and the volume is a sweet safety feature. I do not have to look at the radio anymore, just keep my eyes on the road. It is the perfect level to get in and out of. I love the third row seating with the captains chairs in the middle. Makes it so much easier for the kids to get in and out of. The storage is amazing, with folding down the chairs and especially with the compartment under the floor in the back, that is a definite bonus. That saves so much space. I love the look of this vehicle inside and out. The new body style really caught my eye when it came out. It is so pretty. Switching to 4 wheel drive is so simple to do and convenient. Everything under the hood is in great shape and the tires are very nice as well. We plan on this vehicle to bring us a lot of memories in the future. It will be great for long drives and going camping. We do have the extra floor mats that I would definitely recommend to anyone. They have really protected the floor from everyone's shoes in the rain and snow. They're so easy to clean as well.

Chevy traverse: great 3rd row vehicle, frustrating tech features.
What I love is the interior; the seats, leather, space and comfort. The bucket seat option for the middle row is fantastic for our family. The gas mileage as well as the ride itself is so great. I didn't give it 5 stars because the digital features are frustrating in this vehicle compared to my past one. GPS is only enabled through a separate company (extra monthly fee), roadside assistance is not included, my internet in the car doesn't work unless you pay extra for a hot spot, and even with it, I could never keep the Sirius XM connection so I had to cancel. For a new car with amazing features, it is disappointing to not also benefit from more advanced technology.

This vehicle is a very comfortable and reliable. Great gas economy on longer trips and expected on short trips in town. The v6 engine is very responsive and powerful. The only minor complaints I have is the backup lights are not bright enough to back up with the mirrors but work well if you use the backup camera. Also the auto stop feature on the engine does not have an option to turn it off and gets irritating in heavy traffic.

Traverse is the best vehicle my family has ever owned.
I have no problems with my vehicle. My vehicle is amazing its very spacious. I would recommend it to all of my family and friends. It's a great family vehicle you can fit up to 12 people in it. It rides very smooth. It even has heated seats for cold days. I love my traverse.

Great 3 row SUV with lots of trunk room.
I needed a vehicle that was large enough for my entire family. I checked out many 3 row SUVs but they all lacked trunk/storage room in the back. The Chevy traverse had the largest amount of space in the trunk area and it fit exactly what we needed. If you need a large 3 row SUV, this is the one.

It has a little remote hideaway feature on the dash.
Love the room it has, very smooth ride. Leather seats are easy to clean and the bucket seats in both the front and second row is great! It has many storage areas to store a phone, pocketbook or money. It's very convenient when going to the grocery store or transport of a large item. Best of all is my family if six can all be in it at the same time.

The Chevy traverse premier is the ultimate family car; stylish and practical.
I love everything about this vehicle. It is very roomy and a perfect family car. The backseat has plenty of legroom and the bucket seats in the second row are very comfortable for car seats or adults. The interior and electronic features make this vehicle very luxurious.

Chevy traverse is a game changer.
The Chevy traverse is amazing! Smooth ride, love all the compartments and electronics. Touch screen access and apple CarPlay make it easy to drive hands free. Love having a storage compartment in the trunk for things I keep in my traverse. Plenty of room for larger size families or when kids have friends over!

Wonderful family automobile!
We love the tech. It is a really comfortable car. There is a lot of space in the 2nd and 3rd row. And the in trunk too. It has a powerful engine. The cameras are great! Let's you see a lot. Sometimes CarPlay can be a little weird but other than that, it's a great car!

How amazing my vehicle is. And I would recommend it to everyone.
My vehicle is amazing. It has heated seats for cold winter days. It has 4 wheel drive. Screen upfront that shows everything around you. It fits more than 7 people perfect. It's very spacious and is a great vehicle to take a long trip in. I plan on keeping this truck for a very long time.

Overall a great vehicle but could use some improvements in technology access.
I have really enjoyed our vehicle. The gas mileage is much better than I had expected. There is plenty of room for shopping and road trips. The drive is very smooth, we enjoyed taking it on a recent road trip. I like the smart features but dislike that you have to have a subscription to OnStar in order to use some of them like the phone app and the GPS. You can use android auto for GPS but if you have spotty cell service it's not always reliable. I wish that you could access a built in GPS without paying for OnStar like I had in my Lincoln. But overall we really enjoy this car, would love it more if it allowed the features I suggested. I do feel very safe being in this vehicle and the backup camera and blind spot alerts are great safety features.

Traverse is a great reliable car!
Nice big interior. It rides nice and quietly. The traverse has plenty of room to put things in the trunk to transport, as the third row goes flat. I like that you can tow things and change it to towing option by the shift. Plenty of cup holders for all 7/8 people you have in the car depending on if you get the second row captain chairs or the bench.

2019 Chevy traverse lt AWD.
Our family really enjoys the additional space we got with the upgrade to the 2019 Chevy traverse. Size, space and power are just what we needed for a family vehicle. Since we needed AWD and were on a budget this was one of few that fit the bill. So far we haven't found any problems and are very happy with our purchase.

Super car and I love it badly.
Good horsepower. Turbo engine. Compact vehicle. I love my Chevrolet traverse model because I feel ease behind the steer wheel and also my legs feels relax right at the clutch, break and acceleration pad.. Spacious carriage.. Sunroof and the leather seats makes me feel comfortable in my car..

Great family vehicle for a family of four.
No issues with the car. We love the size for our family and it is great to travel in! We are so glad we got it with the captains seats in the back. It makes a big difference in space for our kids. Having heated seats is a big plus even when not in the winter.

Chevrolet traverse: all terrain fun for a versatile family.
The comfort level of my vehicle is excellent. There are heated/cooled seats for driver and front passenger. Heated seats for back. It has lumbar support for the driver. There is also a front/back camera for parking. My model has captains seats which has been great for the two kids. On lake days and for camping we have more than enough room for two adults, two kids, two dogs and all our gear.

Just love it even without the things I want.
Add my car for year and a 1/2 I have had no issues with it whatsoever it rides very smooth and is good on gas. My grandchildren even say they like it. Just wish it came with built in DVD players. It also has the auto stop which I kind of wish I could turn it off and on when needed.

2019 traverse review by April.
I have had no problems with my traverse. I love the space in it for my family. I like that you can easily put the back seats down so there is more space to store things in the trunk. I like the automatic start for the cold winter days. I like that it can be set up to Bluetooth, if I would need to use that while driving. I like the way it drives.

The Chevy traverse is the ultimate gas friendly family car.
Extremely comfortable and spacious. Excellent sound system. Having issues with the brakes squeaking through. There is ample trunk room and the ceiling feels higher than most others. The captain seat features are a plus. It has a great amount of power and acceleration capabilities. It rides smoothly around town!

Best car we've ever owned!
This car is perfect for large families! There is enough space for multiple car seats while still leaving room for extra people. The third row is the most spacious third row I have ever seen. We have never had any issues with this car, up keep us easy and it is very reliable. Best car we've ever owned.

The 2019 Chevy traverse is the perfect family vehicle!
I absolutely love the comfort of my 2019 Chevy traverse. The seats are relaxing. The back bucket seats provide convenience and extra comfort for backseat riders. The trunk space is excellent and can hold quite a bit. Third row (as well as the second) can fold down for extra space. The apple CarPlay feature is amazing! It provides the convenience of your phone directly on your car screen.

Chevy traverse great car for a big family.
We upgraded from a Honda CR-V to a Chevy traverse due to having a new baby. The decision was between the Honda pilot and the Chevy traverse. We decided to test drive both and the Chevy traverse drives so much smoother and has more power and acceleration which is very helpful because we constantly have a full car due to the kids and different sports equipment they are involved with. Even with all three rows being used there is still ample trunk space. The only negative is that it is on the more expensive side when it comes to gas which is understandable due to it being a bigger car.

Family/kid friendly vehicle.
This car is a very comfortable, kid/family friendly vehicle. The trunks extra space underneath is very helpful and the second row being captain seats makes accessing the third row much easier. The vehicle drives smoothly and so far has been reliable. Traveling in this vehicle is easy and spacious for everyone. The vehicle also has many charging USB ports.

2019 Chevrolet traverse premier.
I have had transmission problems, new transmission fluid was put in but still having problems. The next step is a new torque converter. Other than that it is fine. It is comfortable, seats 7. Lots of room. Has lots of power and get pretty good gas mileage.

Lots of room for a family.
I really like Chevy. Sharp looking car, but not a smooth ride. Not a fan of the motor turning off all the time when stopped. All the cup holders are square which makes it hard to put cups in for travel. I like the color choice. Very roomy on the inside.
accountCircle Jessica W on March 10, 2021
Very roomy and lots a trunk space!
I love my Chevy traverse! I have two kids with a third on the way and the car is very spacious! It has three rows and plenty of trunk space. The car itself is very comfortable and it offers a very smooth ride. I have had this car for over a year now and couldn’t be happier with our decision to purchase it.

My favorite vehicle! Will probably get another one.
The size of this vehicle is perfect for a family of 7. The traverse performs great in all weather types including rain and snow. We use this vehicle to haul the kids and their hockey equipment to games and practices. The traverse gets good gas mileage for its size. This is my second traverse I have had.

The seats are very comfortable and have very warm seat warmers.
The traverse is very comfortable and very easy for beginner drivers to learn how to drive the most efficient and safe way!! Everything in my traverse works very well and I have never had any problems with it after purchase!! The traverse performs amazingly and is good in every single season and all year round.

Great vehicle for a family of 5 tall people.
I love all of the extra features on my vehicle. The remote start makes it easy to warm up in cold months before going out and getting in. The size of the vehicle is just right. We are a family of tall people and it is very spacious for us. I do wish it had just a little more storage space in the back.
