2019 Chevrolet Trax Review: Reasonably Dependable Small SUV With Low Repair Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 27, 2023

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax lasts around 200,000 miles with some brake wear and water leaks reported. At $15,400 to $19,795, it’s cheaper than the competition and clearly built to a price point since it doesn’t have the latest features.

likeFilled The Good
The seats are comfortable for a small SUV, the stereo system is easy to use and legroom is good in the rear seats.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is weaker than many other small SUVs, the cargo space is low and the suspension is a bit firm.

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Trax a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a fine year for the Chevy Trax, although it’s just a mediocre small SUV giving it a lower overall score. Owner reviews praise the technology, low ownership costs, as well as the smooth suspension.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Interior materials are very cheap for a small SUV, the seating is comfortable, cargo space is also lower than the competition.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no major problems on the 2019 Trax. Avoid models from 20152016 since they have electrical issues. 20172022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is poor from the weak 4-cylinder engine, which is focused more on efficiency than power.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2019 Trax earns a perfect 5-star overall rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, along with lane departure warning.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 28 MPG, giving 392 miles of range from the 14 gallon tank. Gas costs are $36 cheaper than average at $149 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is cheaper than other small SUVs, although rapid depreciation gives it a lower total value score.

2019 Chevy trax is the best bang for your buck.
I've had my car for about a year now and it is absolutely wonderful. I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever, it is a very comfortable ride and is not too big yet very spacious. Electric everything makes driving it so much easier and the Bluetooth settings are everything!

Enough for a family of 5. Smooth ride for a calm driver.
I love how smooth I'drives and how I can fit all my children in it. I just dislike the trunk space too small. I love the remote to open it because it reminds me not to leave the key inside. I love how it light are so bright or how it can carry things above it if I need it to.

Chevy trax is a awesome car!
No problems with the car thus far. Reliability and performance is standard for a Chevy vehicle. Comfort is good. No complaints about my vehicle although it is also a lease. The trax is pretty much a small SUV version of the Chevy sonic which I also previously owned. The trax is also comparable to the Buick encore for size, shape, and features.

Lease with no money down!
I love how it handles. The style is cool. It is a small SUV that seats 5 & the rear seats fold down to expand your trunk space for hauling large items that would not fit in a standard trunk. I use the backup camera a lot. I have a am/FM radio, but you can have a CD player installed. It would be nice to have a moonroof. I wish that there was more choices for the color of the interior. All vehicles should come with those shield at the top of the windows, that prevent rain from coming in, while having the window cracked open. The car has a good heater & air-conditioning. I leased the car with no money down! You can add on star if you choose. Overall a good automobile & value for the money.

Chevy Trax is a surprisingly good car you may not have considered.
The Chevy Trax is a small, fuel efficient SUV. It makes a good commuter vehicle during the week, but also a good family car on short weekend jaunts with two kids in the back. The base model provides everything needed for a comfortable drive, including a touchscreen. Missing from the base model is cruise control.
accountCircle Mercedes C
A compact SUV with tons of features.
The trax is a compact SUV so it looks small on the outside but has plenty of room inside. Able to provide Wi-Fi, send vehicle diagnostics to your phone, and have OnStar for extra fees. There is no thermometer on the dash, so you do not know how hot the engine is. The dash does tell your speed both traditionally and digitally, you have to trip options to show how many miles you have gone, tells you how much oil life you have, and what the psi of each tire is. Radio is a touch screen, no CD player, able to hook phones up via Bluetooth. Also has android auto and iPhone app to hook up your GPS from your phone to the car. Steering wheel has accept call, reject call/mute music, and volume buttons. Drives smooth.

Nice SUV, great for a small family. Use to be a ford girl not anymore.
Love it, nice and roomy not to big. Great for a small family. Awesome gas mileage, seats have a mixture of cloth and leather. Nice hatchback area comes with a cover to hide anything in the back area. Has android drive on it, along with all-star. Hands down a great SUV, I have always been a ford girl but not anymore.

You can't go wrong with trax.
I got the basic for trax. What I love about this car is even though this is not a huge car but the inside is spacious. I haven't encountered anything since I bought it year 2019 and it runs smooth. As a mom, it fits perfectly to me. Easy and manageable to clean.

Shitty car would not buy again nor recommend.
Too many recalls for a brand new car. Terrible on windy days. Cannot trust the suspension. The audio system shuts off at random times and completely resets itself. Gas mileage is ok about the only good thing on the vehicle. Worst thing General Motors has ever made.

Do not buy this vehicle and read my review.
Too small, very cheaply made. It has no power. I would not have leases this vehicle had I driven it more than just around the block and done more research. Too many things inside the vehicle are plastic and feel like they could break at any time.. I do not recommend this vehicle for purchase.

2019 Chevy Trax at 5 months old has a rear differential bearing replacement.
The Chevy Trax is causing me a headache. I purchased it brand new on Feb 10th, 2019. It is very small and you can hear all the noises while driving on the highway. Then in April GM had a recall which could be very dangerous , after my recall was fixed on July, 17th, 2019, On Friday,July 26th, as I was driving out of my driveway and I turned left onto the road my car stalled and I had a hard time accelerating with a very loud noise that sounded like a tire popped. I did not drive the car all weekend and put it in for service at the Chevrolet dealer I purchased the car and who also fixed the recall. Hours later I get a call from the service representative that the rear differential bearings need to be replaced. How does this happen to a car that has only been driven for 5 months. I certainly didn’t think having a brand new car I was going to have car problems already. I have had lots of new cars and never before has anything of this magnitude happened. I do not feel safe in this vehicle even when it’s fixed.

What's going to happen next?
I've had nothing but problems with this vehicle since the beginning my back windshield shattered as I was driving down the highway electric dash is not working properly, burns threw alot of gas. I've expressed my concerns about the front passenger side and was told everything was good. I've also been told that the car was taken apart and put back together as all the plastic does not meet were its supposed to you can see the bottom of car. Now there's a huge leak in the back seat were my child went to go sit and everything was soaked including the seat lifted the seat up and I noticed a bunch of mold.this is a 2019 Chevy trax why so many problems.
accountCircle sherry G
My trax did not work out for me.
I just have had a few minor fender benders since getting this vehicle and I feel the shape and size contributes to this. Also the size and shape seem to always contribute to a stone chip in the windshield. That chip usually turns into a crack and I won't buy another.
accountCircle Stephanei P
Small, within a budget new model will not breakdown. Needs some improvements.
I think it is too small for family specially with kids. Car is basic but drives smooth, saves gas, small enough to fit anywhere. I am very big on sound system. If you;re looking for a car with sound system this is not it. Has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi if activated with star account.
accountCircle Abigail J
I love how mine is great on gas but is all-wheel-drive.
The Chevrolet trax is a great vehicle for almost anyone. It provides more room than a sedan but you keep the great gas mileage. Mine gets at least 26 mpg. It drives very smooth and is very reliable. It has a back-up camera that shows you how close you are to something and generally shows you where the back of your car is going.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Trax?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Chevrolet Trax really only exists as a placeholder in Chevy’s lineup, with lower owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2019 Trax at 3.7/5, praising the nice technology features, but doesn’t like the slow engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Trax a 3.8/5, enjoying the decent passenger space for its size, but owners don’t like the rapid depreciation.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Trax Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Chevrolet Trax include premature brake wear, water leaks, as well as some stereo system issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other small SUVs, leading to average repair costs as a Chevy Trax ages.

Premature brake wear is the most widespread complaint from Trax owners in the first 10,000 miles. If you are heavy on the brakes then the front brakes tend to wear out quickly. Replacing the pads costs around $400, while new rotors cost around $550. Upgrading to some higher quality brake pads is around $500, and may be worth the extra money.

Water leaks have also been reported on some Chevy Trax models at around 5,000 miles. The weather stripping on the rear windows tends to peel off easily, allowing water to get into the cabin through the area. Replacing the seals is a reasonably easy process, costing around $250 depending on local labor rates.

Stereo system issues are another complaint from 2019 Trax owners at around 5,000 miles. Usually, the source of the problem is a software issue. Most dealerships will update the software for free, while some charge around $50. In rare cases there have been some electrical connection issues, which are more expensive to fix at around $350.

There are two recalls on the 2019 Chevy Trax, which is fewer than some other small SUVs. The first recall is for the lower control arm, which may separate from the vehicle. Chevy will replace lower control arms on affected vehicles for free. The second recall is for the air bags, which are common on all makes and models.

How Long Will the 2019 Chevrolet Trax Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Chevy Trax can last around 200,000 miles, which is over 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $380 per year.

As a used 2019 Chevrolet Trax reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history owners should be prepared to replace the brake fluid level switch for $200, a radiator fan costing $475, along with the fuel injectors which cost around $175 each.

accountCircle Darlene M

My Chevy trax is very reliable and I have yet to experience any problems with it. I feel very safe and secure when traveling in this vehicle either alone or carrying a passenger.

accountCircle Melissa N

Yes, it is reliable. I have not had any problems with the trax. A minor recall but that is it and the dealership was easy to work with.

accountCircle Mirannda W

Yes the Chevy trax is a reliable car. The only problem I had was a recall on the car and that got fixed at no cost to me.

accountCircle Bill B

The car has proven to be very reliable. We have had no problems with it since we've owned it now for over 6 months.

accountCircle Tyrel A

Very reliable, no problems thus far and I have had it for 50000 miles now. This is the second trax I have owned and both have performed admirably in the myriad of seasons here in the northwest!

accountCircle Mari C

We had one recall for the control arms which was fixed quickly. The gas mileage is pretty good as well. This car is great, I love it. The only problem I've ever had was the control arms.

accountCircle Tyler G

It is a very reliable vehicle. There are no problems that I have had thus far. There was 1 recall on it but it was taken care of shortly after I got it and it was of no cost to me at all.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good for a small SUV with a standard 7-inch touchscreen interface which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include a more powerful Bose stereo system.

Safety technology is just okay compared to some of the other compact SUVs on the market, offering a standard rearview camera. Optional advanced safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, along with lane departure warning.

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Trax a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Chevy Trax is a decent value since it’s reasonably reliable while being cheaper than many competitors. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $15,400 to $19,795, making it less than a Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5. When new, the price range was $21,300 to $29,100. Depreciation is worse than other small SUVs, losing about 13% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chevy Trax?

There are three main models of the 2019 Chevrolet Trax offered from the base LS model all the way up to the more luxurious Premier model. The 2019 Trax is also offered in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive models.

LS is the entry-level model with:

The engine found in the 2019 Chevy Trax is a weak 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder which makes 138 horsepower at up to 28 MPG. It comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is poor, taking 9.3 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chevy Trax Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chevy Trax?

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax has a comfortable interior with ample head and legroom for passengers. The seats are supportive and the ride is smooth, even on rough roads.

Some owners have noted that the cabin can be quite loud at highway speeds, which can be a distraction for some drivers. Additionally, the quality of materials used in the interior is basic, some people may find them less luxurious.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chevy Trax Have?

The 2019 Chevy Trax has a cargo volume of 18.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and 48.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, which is much less than many other compact SUVs on the market.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chevy Trax was introduced in 2015.

2015: All-new smaller crossover SUV model introduced below the Chevy Equinox.

2016: No changes from earlier years.

2017: Minor interior and exterior styling changes, standard Apple CarPlay & Android Auto across the lineup.

2018: Latest version of Chevy’s MyLink stereo system added.

2019: No major changes.

2020: Midnight edition package removed from the lineup.

2021: Premier model discontinued, more powerful engine offered near the end of the year.

How Does the Chevy Trax Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is a mediocre small SUV compared to a lot of the other options on the market. The Trax is focused heavily on being a budget-friendly choice and misses features found in the competition.

The Chevy Equinox is another competitor from Chevrolet, which costs around $2,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Chevy Equinox, while the Chevy Trax is a bit easier to park in large cities with small parking spots. We recommend the Chevy Equinox since you get a lot more technology, making it worth the extra money.

The Ford EcoSport is another very small SUV which costs about $1,000 less. Interior materials are slightly nicer in the Ford EcoSport, while the Chevy Trax has some more standard technology. We recommend the Chevy Trax, although both are not very appealing small SUVs since they lack a lot of safety technology found on other SUVs from the same year.

Do Owners Recommend the Chevy Trax?

accountCircle Lorna F

Yes, it is perfect size for me, I do not need a big SUV, it is nice and compact, but still plenty of room, and I needed AWD and very happy with it.

accountCircle Darlene M

Yes, it is comfortable and dependable. I have bought 2 Chevy trax in the past 5 years and love how it performs. It handles quite well in inclement weather for only being a front wheel drive. The only thing I would change is the trunk space. The trunk space is a bit small for my use, therefore, I have to lay the back seats down when I require more room.

accountCircle Melissa N

Yes, it has all wheel drive making it nice to drive in the snowy weather. I also enjoy having an automatic car starter in the winter months.

It is a good riding car! It is quite roomy for a small SUV.
I love the size, it is just big enough for me to handle. Ride is smooth, it is roomy inside. Very comfortable. I love that it has beeping signals if I get too close to another car. That feature is great especially when I am parking. It is very good on gas.

Great everyday car for a single family.
This car is an upgrade of the traditional sedan style. You are able to take down the back seats and part of the hatchback to haul materials. This car drives very well in snowy conditions. If maintenance is kept up, this car drives very well. The back seat is a little cramped for passengers.

2019 Chevrolet trax - a small family car.
I like the way the car is designed on the inside. It is comfortable and has good trunk space. I wish it was a little bigger. I also wish the interior was a different color but black was the only color available. I like how adjustable the seat is. It allows me, as a short person, to adjust it in several ways to be more comfortable and have better sight lines. I think the air conditioning works well but the vents could be a bit bigger. It takes a while for the back seat to cool down, while the people in the front start to get too cold. I like the amount of cup holders and how there are two in the little divider thing in the back seat. I am curious as to why the designers put a very small armrest on the right side of the driver's seat but added nothing to the left side of the passenger's seat. Also, the passenger seat is not as adjustable as the driver's seat. The passenger seat sits rather high and is a bit awkward for my tall husband. It has taken some getting used to. I like that the car is able to tell me which tire is low and by how much. For some reason I seem to have a lot of trouble with car tires losing air (not just this car). I also like that the car tells me when it is time for an oil change. I like that OnStar and internet are available. Having the internet really helped my family on our last long road trip.

Chevrolet trax 2019 - great starter car!
This vehicle has great features. I can hook up my apple CarPlay, I can include Wi-Fi and it comes with OnStar service. However the car is on the smaller size compared to many other SUVs. The car comes with 4 cup holders in total. The car does not come with a center console so storage is limited and small. The car seats 5, but the back row would be a little snug. The trunk size is fair, on the smaller side, and comes with a detachable blind for the trunk. This car drives well in all seasons. This car is extremely reliable and I recommend this car to a small family, 1-2 kids or any single persons. Would not consider a “family” car due to space limitations.

My trax likes to throw tantrums.
Its a little to small inside and out for my liking. I also think it could be slightly better on gas. That being said, it drives well, very smooth. I really like the stock stereo it comes with and love the display screen for it! Every now and then the audio system and the display system kind of go nuts and not even pulling the fuse corrects it. You just kind of have to wait until the car decides it is done throwing a tantrum. Overall, I would rate my trax a 6.5 out of 10. There is more pros than cons with it, and I have listed my main ones.

Nice small SUV but minimal cargo space like most. Runs well and haven't had any issues mechanically. Do wish the rear window was larger for better visibility but rear backup camera makes up for it. Really nice compact yet spacious sport utility vehicle that gets excellent gas mileage. Switchblade key with remote start which really comes in handy on cold mornings when you can crank the car after setting it to heat or defrost without going outside so that the car will be defrosted and warm when you go to it to leave. I have the 2019 Chevrolet trax. It is a great, reliable compact vehicle.
Honestly I have had this vehicle for 2 years now and I have not had any problems. The only issue I have with the trax is the lack of space and the lack of cruise control in the base model. If you have more than one child, this car is probably not for you. The back seat has 3 seat belts, but you can only get 2 car seats in the back. As far as comfort, for the price it is a comfortable ride. You can control the firmness of the seat which is nice. Overall for a compact vehicle it is great, they just should have made the trunk a little bigger.

You can't go wrong with trax.
I got the basic for trax. What I love about this car is even though this is not a huge car but the inside is spacious. I haven't encountered anything since I bought it year 2019 and it runs smooth. As a mom, it fits perfectly to me. Easy and manageable to clean.

Nice size vehicle for a retired person.
This is the second trax I have leased. I bought them both because of how the seats felt and molded to my back. It is a good economical vehicle. It has very good pick up when accelerating into traffic and performs quite well in the mountains I am retired and do not do much driving so it is a good size for me.

Review of 2019 Chevy Trax LS
My car is very reliable. It is AWD se gas mileage isn't great but it does drive very nice. It has many features for an LS. My favorite feature is the touchscreen radio. I also like the hill assist feature when accelerating on a hill. I feel safe driving in the winter as well.

Just an awesome vehicle to drive around in.
My vehicle as of now has never had any problems, the performance is outstanding, driving on the road is very comfortable and the reliability is fantastic and the features of the vehicle is hands-on to help the driver -navigate through different systems I would definitely recommend this vehicle to any customer because it is great on the road and great for the family.

Chevy trax is a smooth ride!
The Chevy trax has ample room when the seats are both up and down. It is perfect for transporting family and furniture. It drives smoothly and it has a comfortable interior. The backup camera is also a huge plus, as well as it is Bluetooth capability and it is multiple USB plug-ins.

Great, reliable, SUV with minor technical issues.
The touch screen radio disconnects Bluetooth a lot while driving and won't allow you to reconnect until stopped. The touchless entry sometimes is delayed you just have to press the door twice. Great on gas, comfort, room, I have two dogs and we are always on the move, so I needed a car with space, and easy to clean! It is a very safe and reliable car. I bought it new and have not had any issues at all.

Car is for someone single with no kids and no life.
The car runs loud for some reason and I bought my car brand new. When I first bought the car it seemed a lot bigger on the inside and it is not. Have not had any other issues with the car. The truck space is very limited. They should make these SUVs a bit bigger.

An interesting detail was the price.
I really like this vehicle. It has performed for me very well so far. I have extra warranty which will cover almost any problem I might encounter. The price was very good and the financing was at a very low rate. My family feels this was the right vehicle for me at this point. I am a senior with some physical problems and a cancer that is in remission for the last 12 years.

The last vehicle for me, for me nothing else.
When I bought my trax I wasn't expecting to trade. The trax is easy to drive, taking little learning. The only thing that bothers me is the film that forms on the inside of the front window. Hard to get clean. It drives so easily, controls are close at hand. It is easy to set the setting to my liking.

Full wheel drive does not mean big.
My vehicle is a small SUV. It is a 4 cylinder but gets up to speed easily and we have found it very easy to speed as it feels like slower than you are. Cloth interior with leather accents. Remote start. Manual seat adjustments. Lots of small storage areas.

Great look, love the upgrades in the lt models.
All around it is a good vehicle. It is a smaller SUV but works great for a starter family. I love the lt model it has the upgrades! I love that the truck has a cover, but it really needs more room!! We always have to put stuff in the back seat, that can get annoying. But overall it is great!

The first starter car for a new driver.
The trax is a nice car to start out with. The car is not a fast accelerator but once you get it going the speed picks up. Gas mileage is great I get about 330 miles per a tank. That is mostly highway driving but is still great for a 14 gallon tank. Overall the car is a great starter cheap.

I love the fact that it has apple CarPlay.
The features are nice, comes with apple carplay and a touch screen radio. The acceleration is not great but runs well overall. The comfort is nice, it is on the small end of an SUV but does have a decent trunk area and a decently sized back seat. Comes with a security cover for the hatchback trunk.

The best thing to me is the backup camera and Wi-Fi as well. It is super helpful!
Overall it has been amazing for us, but as a family of five the back can get uncomfortable. We have two car seats in the back so it can make the third person very squished. Also, the passenger seat does not lower and my husband who is 6’2 looks very awkward and I am sure uncomfortable if he ever sits on that side. Other than that it is a cute SUV. Just maybe for a smaller family or just a couple.

My car is a white Chevy trax.
Just not a fan of the look of it. Drives great and love the size. It is nice feeling higher up but still in a smaller comfortable car. If you feel the equinox is a little too big the trax would be a perfect size. Other than the look of the car I love everything about it.

My Chevy trax is amazing and it is the best car I have ever had.
Very versatile, fun to drive and is good on gas mileage. Tinted windows, comfortable seats that fold down in the back. Has a large screen for apps and backup camera. Very nice crossover and highly recommend. I love taking it on long road trips because I can blast my music and it rides very nice, not rough like other Chevys.
accountCircle Anna C on February 5, 2021
The vehicle is extremely comfortable.
Absolutely amazing. Small but not too small. SUV like and is great because all seats fold down to create more space if needed. Absolutely amazing. Small but not too small. SUV like and is great because all seats fold down to create more space if needed.

Chevy trax, compact car that gets the job done.
Seats have multiple adjustments which makes them comfortable to sit in, can surprisingly store a lot despite the cars small size. Excellent gas mileage and the it does not cost much to fill up the gas tank. Overall a smooth ride. Surprisingly a lot of room in the back seats for passengers. I especially like how it has 4 cup holders in the front and two in the back. Although it does not have a middle console for storage, which some people may not like.

Chevrolet trax positives.
The vehicle is very comfortable and is just the right size for what I need it for. The vehicle gets excellent gas mileage. The system alerts are very helpful so that I always know when the vehicle is in need of maintenance. The trunk is also very spacious.

Chevrolet good car in 4 years have had no problems.
I have the no frills model it drives very well like the ride . The seat could be a little more comfortable I also think the trunk is a little too small and opening and closing is a little difficult for a short person like me I have been driving a Chevy now for 4 years this is my third on I had the cruze before and loved it, but they are not making it anymore so far I really like Chevy I have had no problems.

My tiny trax is a great mom mobile.
I love my chic mobile. It is great on gas mileage and does not cost a fortune to fill up. It is quaint and cozy, spacious enough for my family to ride in. Rides great especially on the highway. It is easy to park, the automatic features are great, and I love having satellite radio.

Fun-size treat! Power and safety in a pretty cute package.
I have had my trax 2 years and have had zero issues. It's a joy to drive and it is size is super convenient for city living. I enjoy the apple carplay feature for navigation, music and podcasts. My trax has all wheel drive and keeps on the road during Michigan winters. I feel safer than if I was in a car.

Chevy trax: the best car I have had.
This car is the most reliable car I have ever bought. I have literally no issues with the car and love the idea of buying another one in the next few years. I genuinely love this car. I highly suggest people look into this car at their next car purchase.

An interesting detail of my vehicle is the front sensor.
The safety features provided on my car allow me to make long trips, worry free. I really enjoy having an mini SUV because I can fit into many places, but also drive multiple people in it. The car has impressed me so much that I plan for my next car in the future to also be a Chevy vehicle.
