2012 Chrysler 200 Review: Unreliable Midsize Car Buyers Should Avoid

Alex Showalter
Apr 6, 2022

The 2012 Chrysler 200 lasts only around 150,000 miles with engine and computer failures. At $6,811 – 9,690, it’s overpriced for how often it breaks down.

Interior materials are luxurious, the V6 engine is quick and the available convertible is a unique feature.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The cabin is small, technology is obsolete and the fuel economy is lower than rivals.

Is the 2012 Chrysler 200 a Good Used Car?

  • No, 2012 is a bad year. Owners complain about poor build quality, electrical issues, and high ownership costs.

The Chrysler 200 limited is a spacious, sporty, family car.
I have had no mechanical problems with my Chrysler 200 limited. For a mid-size car it does not feel small. It has a sporty look. One problem I have had is rear facing a car seat. In order to not have the front seat touching the car seat, I have had to install the car seat on the passenger side. Forward facing a car seat is much better, except for the built in headrests that have a slight angle to them, which can cause the seat to be pushed forward. The car is extremely reliable and very user friendly. I am 5'2" typically I find it difficult to see out of vehicles, I do not have any trouble seeing out of the Chrysler 200 limited. The seats are comfortable which makes long car rides not seem so long.

The vehicle is very good to drive around and do errands and go about your day.
My vehicle is a Chrysler 200 model, this is the perfect type of car you would like to take to work. It is good for a couple that just wants to go out on a good date and you'd want to impress your date. The interior is good it has the up most perfect room for children or no children, for friends and as well family. It drives pretty smooth, if you keep up to date with the mechanics of the car, oil change etc. It is low maintenance, does have signals to when the car need a specific thing changed or updated. It is overall a good car to use for errands and to be about your day.

Chrysler 200, 2012, low miles.
I have a v6 engine and I like the pick-up speed. Also, leather seats are nice. It runs very smoothly. I had to get new tires. The electronic monitoring system is good. It is nice to always know the tire pressure. Overall, I have been satisfied, but I also have low mileage so more problems may arise.

I think the car is a great car and was well worth the investment.
In about a little less than a one year time frame, I have had to get two alternators put on which is the only major maintenance issues that I have had. Another issue is the heating element does not work properly on the passenger side but I am glad that I have not had major issues. I bought the car when it only had 18 moles on it so I am the only owner. The car drives very smoothly and I have enjoyed it since I have owned it.

Smooth ride with a great grey color. Very attractive vehicle.
Only issue I have had is the airbag light keeps coming on. Other than that it is a smooth comfortable ride. Has good stereo system. Plenty of seating and very roomy. Do wished it had remote start. Windshield wiper tubes came off and need to get fixed again.

I love the shape but I don't care for the color.. It is white.
I usually own a Chevrolet but opted to try chrysler. This car is full of comfort and luxury. I honestly feel like with it being called a sedan, it should be bigger. The ride is smooth and the engine can't be heard. The factory radio is junk.. I would really like to replace it.

Chrysler 200 touring sedan is the car to be.
Chrysler 200 is a smooth running car with a fun amount of torque but is also reliable and safe. I enjoy the computer menu options so I always know how my car is doing and what the tire psi is, etc. This car has amazing gas mileage that I know can take me anywhere without any worry as to how far it’ll make it and for how much it'll cost to get there.

Good on gas miles, nice trunk space.
Transmission problems was replaced before 100 miles, problems with heat in the first year and leak in the ac. The fabric is peaking away from the doors. Brake light always come on and off. I will not buy a Chrysler again. Just a pain since day one with this car.

Do not buy this car ever!!
It is difficult to work on. If you need to change the battery you have to change front driver side tire, to change spark plugs you have to practically take motor apart. It is horrible on gas. Also I bought the car brand new and transmission already started slipping.

This car is a clunker for sure.
This vehicle has many manufacturer problems including problems with dash lights and check engine lights coming on for no apparent reason. We had received a letter from Chrysler manufacturer saying that this is a common error they have encountered. This problem has prevented us in getting smog's, using uber, and lots of unnecessary money spent on seeing a mechanic.

Always in the shop: Antarctica vs. The Equator
I'm always having to take it into the shop go get it fixed. The AC is bad and so is the heat. It's either Antarctica or the Equator in my car plus the AC likes to get clogged and leak water in the passenger's seat. The door handle is covered in some sort of metal that has broken off and is now sharp.
accountCircle Sandra B
It's a very comfortable vehicle but has several issues that occur out of nowhere.
My car only has around 150,000 miles on it and has been extremely well kept and serviced on time. With that being said it has a very loud exhaust issue which we cannot seem to fix, the heat stopped working but only on the passenger side of the car, and the electronic thermostat keeps going bad. Also the defroster has started to smell like something is burning.

Clean looking. Sharp look. Lots of fun. Large trunk.
No power. Takes a long time to get up and go. Shifts slow. Nice inside of very cheap looking. But other than that had no other issues

Chrysler 200 S engine is sound, but not electrical.
Engine is wonderful as is safety features. Has a lot of electrical issues though. Also goes through brakes and rotors and wheel barrens.

What Do Critics Say About the Chrysler 200?

  • Consumer Reports finds the 200 to be uncompetitive and aging, with low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the 200 a 3.6/5 and likes the powerful V6 engine, but the technology is outdated.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the 200 4.2/5, enjoying the stylish exterior, and disliking the cramped cabin.

What Common Problems Does the 2012 Chrysler 200 Have?

Serious problems found in the Chrysler 200 include heater failures, stalling engines, and computer issues.

Heater failures are the most common complaint from owners at around 65,000 miles. The only solution is replacing the heater core costing around $1,500.

Stalling engines are mentioned at around 100,000 miles. There are several sources ranging from the crank sensor costing $350, all the way up to piston and rod issues which cost over $2,500 to replace.

Computer failures with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) show up at around 65,000 miles. The TIPM is a weak spot across many Chrysler vehicles, and when it fails a replacement costs over $1,200.

There are 4 recalls, with the most serious being for rod-bearing failure, which can cause the engine to seize up and fail. The other recalls are for air bags and head restraints which will not mechanically total the car.

How Long Will the 2012 Chrysler 200 Last?

A properly maintained Chrysler 200 will last about 150,000 miles, half as long as top rated competitors including the Camry. Ownership costs are higher than rivals at $543 per year, according to Repair Pal.

A 200 from 2012 will likely have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace the water pump for $800, suspension shocks and struts costing $900, and the catalytic converter which costs $1,600.

accountCircle Michael L

Yes it is very reliable. The only problems I have had with it have included material things such as replacing a headlight.

accountCircle Bruce D

Very reliable. It has no additional problems. Except for maintenance it has been in the shop only once for anything other than maintenance.

accountCircle Lisa C

As I stated in my previous answer, I haven't had any major issues with it and as long as I do routine maintenance it seems to run perfectly.

accountCircle Summer T

The blower went out, the tires keep going flat. But besides that it seems to be in decent condition.

accountCircle Adrianna C

Very reliable, I haven't had any issues from the vehicle, keep the oil changed tune ups, brakes, and your good to go.

accountCircle Matthew M

It has been very reliable for me. The only thing of note for me, is to make sure you have to correct tires for winter driving as the rear of the vehicle feels very light and slips around some.

accountCircle Jeff R

It has a heater core problem and a problem with the exhaust as well. It runs and is reliable to get me to work.

accountCircle Rhonda B

It has 2 problems, one problem is the windshield washer fluid pump hasn't worked in 4 years. Don't know why I didn't replace it yet, it's pretty simple. The other problem is the front windows won't roll up sometimes.

How Much Is the 2012 Chrysler 200 Worth?

Blue book values range from $6,811 – 9,690, making the Chrysler 200 about $2,000 cheaper than an Accord or Fusion. When new, the price range was $18,995 to $32,450. Depreciation is worse than rivals, losing around 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chrysler 200?

There are 4 models of the 200 which are offered as either a sedan or convertible. Technology is weak and was last updated in 2011, with a redesign in 2015.

LX is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating

What Engines Come In the Chrysler 200?

  • The standard engine is a front wheel drive weak 2.4L 4-cylinder making 173 horsepower, which gets a combined rating of 24 MPG combined.
  • An optional upgrade is also front wheel drive from the powerful 3.6L V6 with 283 horsepower getting up to 22 MPG combined. Performance is good, taking only 6.9 seconds to go from 0-60 miles per hour.

What Colors Does the Chrysler 200 Come In?

How Big Is the Chrysler 200?

The Chrysler 200 is smaller than other midsize sedans on the market including the Legacy and Mazda6. Passenger room is cramped in the backseats with limited legroom for taller adults.

Cargo space is lower than rivals as well, with only 13.6 cubic feet of room in the trunk.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Chrysler 200 Compare to the Competition?

The Chrysler 300 is a rival from the same brand costing about $4,000 more. Passenger room and performance are both better in the 300, but the 200 is available with a convertible top. We recommend the 300 since it’s more reliable and fun to drive.

The Toyota Camry is a competitor costing about $2,000 more. Reliability ratings are much better in the Camry, but the 200 is more responsive to drive. We recommend the Camry since they last longer and have lower ownership costs.

New battery new alternator car still won't stay charged
I've Replaced the rotor with a new rotor not refib not refill and a new battery and the car will not start it turns over but as soon as the charge is pulled off it dies. I can't find any troubleshooting information and I've searched everywhere. The mechanicHas researchedAnd trouble shot it and no no information is given why this would happen. This is a major problem with all of the Chrysler 200It should have had a recall on this. This is the 2nd alternator actually but but the battery kept dying so I replaced it again a month later with the best you can buy. I thought it might have been the referbBecause it was whining. The lights were still coming on so I put a new on. If any one could pose something about this and help. My car was literally broke down 2 months this summer with different problems one would get fixed another would happen I take very good care of the car oil always changed brakes taking care of tires Et cetera. So if anyone knows anything please post that could help me out here my car can't start I can't go to work this is really becoming a problem and Chrysler should have to pay for this. Customers should be able to spend on their cars even at a 100000 miles. It's a 2012So there's no warrantyBut there should be.

Most reliable car I ever owned
I bought this car brand new in 2012 in CA. Drove it for daily biz use for my job for 5 years. The battery change is not easy, and an actuator behind the glovebox clicks when I turn on heat or a/c (700 to fix, I will deal with it). Beyond that, it has been the best car! It is fast and just the right size. Keeping it till it falls apart as I don't want a car payment lol

Worst problem: thermostat. Replaced with a Mopar. Failed in less than a year. Replaced with aftermarket. Works! V6, Ltd., low miles (82k). My only wish: 6 speed manuel. Semi automatic is weak substitute. Low miles and garaged may contribute to my better experience.

Nice car, but what should be simple maintenance is a huge project!
I selected LX for the trim but in reality I have no idea what that even means... I like this car for the most part. It runs well. The seats are comfortable. The trunk is roomy. I have had very few problems. Now for the downside: What the hell were the engineers smoking when they decided to put the battery up inside the car behind the wheel well. That is probably the stupidest and most inconvenient place they could put it! Then what is going on with the headlights? In order to change a headlight you have to take the whole bumper off. THAT IS INSANE!!! There are 4 things that every car owner should be able to do themselves without taking their car to a shop. Those 4 things are, 1.) Change the wiper blades, 2.) Change a tire, 3.) Change any of the main lights. (Headlight, Taillight, Breaks, and Turn signals) 4.) Change the battery On aChysler 200 you can't do any of those things without taking the car to a shop. You have to practically take the car apart to do a job that should only be a simple 15 minute task. Because of this I will never buy a Chrysler again! I don't know if other Chryslers have these problems, but I am not willing to find out.

It is a used car so I guess the problems I have had are normal. I had a cracked head but fortunately it was still under warranty. They fixed it but then my check engine light came on and they said the warranty was over. My heater on the driver side does not work.

Love my 200. No problems. Great ride!
This car has been fantastic. Very comfortable and highly reliable. One weird problem has been this clicking sound related to the air conditioner which goes away when I press the “recirculate” button. I think it is some mechanical piece that clicks until I set that button, but it goes away so easily I haven't had it looked at. This car has only needed routine maintenance and drives quite smoothly. The sound system is great, the seats are comfortable. It heats up fast in winter and cools down fast in summer. Easy to clean and looks great after a quick car wash.

Vehicle drives wonderfully. It gives a good connection with the road. Have had some issues with air conditioner leaking. Gas mileage is good. Transmission shifts well. Overall recommend the vehicle.
My Chrysler 200 2012 has been reliable however when hiccups do come up and repairs need to be made it is unlikely you’ll be able to fix it at home because it is designed and manufactured in a was where it is difficult enough to navigate through the engine unlike your average Honda or Toyota that you can fix minor upkeeps at home such as like changes and battery replacements. I have had it for over 6 years and as I have said earlier it has been reliable for the most past. It has only “broken down on me a couple of times and it wasn’t major repairs however I did need to take it to the dealership or mechanic as opposed to being able to do it at the comfort of my own home.

A reliable car with some zip to it.
It is been mostly reliable since I have had it. But now that it is no longer under warranty it has had some electrical issues as far as the windows getting stuck in the down position. And being that it is an older car now I have noticed it starting to have some issues with the gears slipping a little so it needs a transmission service. It is has a good sound system as well if you like louder playing music and I cannot complain too much about the trunk space. Other than that the car has been pretty reliable and has been relatively comfortable to drive since I have had it.

I like the amazing stereo system.
I absolutely love my vehicle! Some features I adore on it are the sunroof and the stereo system. It drives very smoothly and very nicely. There is lots of room, so it makes for a nice family car. The trunk is really big so that helps with grocery shopping since we have such a big family.

Love it but will be upgrading.
It gets great gas mileage. It is compact, but that is also a downfall. I have a growing family, so will be needing to purchase a larger car. The blind spots are absolutely horrible in this vehicle. It does perform very well and is great for long trips since it does get such fantastic mileage.

The love for the car would leave you breathless.
I have had my car for two years I bought it with 82,000 miles on it! I have not had hardly any problems the only thing I have had to replace was the coolant pump! The interior is very nice I love that is has a navigation system in it! Also heated seats to boot.

General complaints regarding Chrysler 200.
Headlights are set too low by the factory, unable to adjust them high enough to make a difference. They are a safety hazard. Both headrests broke and had to replace with ones found in a junkyard. Gas mileage is very poor, between 17- 20 mpg. After about 80k miles the transmission is shifting harder.

Amazing car, very reliable.
Love the bass on my car and everything about it. Haven't really had any problems yet. Very comfortable and the features are awesome, love the touch screen features. The leather seats are beautiful and nice feeling. The trunk is a awesome size and fits everything perfectly inside.

Steering wheel buttons and sun roof are my favorites.
Car is roomy. Seats are comfortable. I personally love how good the bass is on the stereo. I love the fact that the steering wheel has radio control buttons on it so I do not have to take my hands off of it to change the radio station. The sunroof is my absolute favorite feature!

Push button for trunk s very helpful.
Very limited storage space and gas gauge unreliable high wind this vehicle is not good on snow or ice and too affected by high wind seats do not adjust as well as they should. Leg room for back seat is very limited and vehicle is hard to enter or exit.

My Chrysler 200 experience.
My vehicle is very reliable with automatic starter. Has a problem with the gas cap coming off often. It is Bluetooth with uconnect. Very good with gas. It has central air and leather seats and seat warming which I barely use. My car is a midnight blue and almost looks black.

The vehicle is also the main reason for the new technology to be the first ti.
It runs good! No problems its reliable and very comfortable to drive the features of the car is brown and black inside tells tire pressure. It stills run like a new car and had it for three years. The only work that has been needed is oil change which is normal.

My 200 baby, black and sleek.
I love my car, it drives easily it's small and gets good gas mileage. I do not like that the heat doesn't work in the passenger side, and apparently that's a very common issue for this vehicle. It is not an easy fix either. Other than that I haven't had an issue in the 2 and 1/2 years that I have had it.

I am happy with the choice I made 5 years ago. The heated seats are my favorite.
It rides nicely and has many additional features that are very convenient. I love the heated seats but would have preferred if they came in cloth instead of leather. The gas mileage is just fair I thought it would be better on the highway. The GPS really comes in handy. It is very roomy and has a large trunk for groceries. The doors and trunk lid are very heavy. I will definitely look at this before buying another car.

Good for transportation, good on gas, good color, compact, good looking car!
My cars runs good, low mileage(70000), good on gas, 2012 Chrysler 200. The car is in good shape, good paint and details, the color is silver, sedan, 4 doors, automatic, has a clock inside on dashboard. Good maintenance, good tires brand new.

It runs great, is very reliable and very cost effective to maintain!
I love that my car is a hard top convertible! It is the best of both worlds. I also love the fuel economy and the smooth ride.
