2013 Chrysler 200 Review: Unreliable Midsize Car With Serious Mechanical Issues

Alex Showalter
Sep 17, 2022

The 2013 Chrysler 200 only lasts around 150,000 miles with a lot of serious engine and transmission problems. At $8,121 to $12,507 it’s cheap but not worth the money when you’ll spend thousands fixing it each year.

V6 engine offers good power for a sedan, seats are comfortable and the suspension is smooth.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Cargo space is worse than other sedans, the back seats are cramped and there are a lot of mechanical problems.

Is the 2013 Chrysler 200 a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 5/10 – 2013 is a bad year for the Chrysler 200 and it deserves the low rating since it has a lot of mechanical issues. Owner reviews complain about broken parts, high ownership costs, and electrical issues.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – The Chrysler 200 has nicer interior materials than other midsize sedans, the seats are comfortable, and the trunk is smaller than average.
  • Reliability 4/10 – The 2013 Chrysler 200 has widespread engine problems. Avoid models from 2011-2013, and go with a 2014 which is more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – The base 4-cylinder is weak for a midsize sedan, although the optional V6 offers good power.
  • Safety 6/10 – The Chrysler 200 gets a 4-star overall rating in government crash tests with a bad 3-star rating in the front passenger impact test. There’s no advanced safety technology available.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – Fuel economy is worse than average at up to 23 MPG, which gives owners about 388 miles of range out of the 16.9 gallon gas tank. Fuel costs are $8 higher than other midsize sedans at $211 per month.
  • Value 5/10 – The 2013 Chrysler 200 is a cheap car, yet it’s still a bad value since you will have to spend a lot of money to keep it running.

Amazing gas mileage and great for long road trips.
The gas mileage is amazing, maintenance is pretty standard and can go anywhere to get things fixed, overall great car. It is easy to clean and the seats are very comfortable. The only thing I would change is if it had Bluetooth for playing music or talking on the phone.

Best value for your money and time.
It is a very smooth ride and I love the look. It is classic with modern conveniences. Very reliable car easy to fix when needed. It is great on gas which is very important right now and it is the perfect size. It is not to big but not to small either. Best buy ever.

This car is a lemon
Transmission converter brakes and lining steering .cuts off when you stop. Car has 36000 miles. Was bought new nov. 2012. It was 6300 to fix . My warranty is now expired. The car still does not work.

Windshield wipers stopped working while driving in rain.
I do not think the car is comfortable when driving or as a passenger. The car has had several recalls, one had the windshield wipers stop in the rain while driving on highway with my small child. And then the dealership telling me they couldn't find the problem not reliable. Weird noises, sounds and problems.

This vehicle is a lemon. Do not buy
I like nothing about this car. Everything is backwards amd so hard to work on compared to almost any other vehicle. Also had replace half of the guts in this thing after 100000 miles. Plan on trading this piece of garbage in as soon as possible.

Chrysler 200 is not the best.
The inside is very comfy has room to move around. It has lot of mechanical problems with the engine. The battery drains very quickly. I preheat my car in the winter and it’ll give me a lot of battery issues. Auto start was built with the car and I cannot use it anymore because it drains my battery.

My ride. The car that never sleeps.
I don't own a vehicle at this time, the ones I drive belong to latrecia and her mother. I have had several cars in my life my favorite is the 2005 mercury grand marquis, and a Buick skylark. The newest vehicle I least was very nice. But I really want a truck hopefully I can fix my credit.

Don't buy this car it's not worth it
I have had to replace the window motor on the both the driver's side and passenger's side of the car. I have had problems with the air conditioner not performing as expected even after servicing. I bought the car new in December 2013 and it had less than 60 miles on it. The battery died after 6 months of having the car. There is a clicking noise that comes from the vents that happens even when the car is off. The noise can also be heard from outside the car. My car didn't come with floor mats and when I called the dealership back they told me I had to pay extra for them. I called Chrysler and they said the same thing.

It is a red 2013 Chrysler 200 limited.
The Bluetooth connection broke and I am no longer to connect my phone. The driver's seat is automatic which is nice but the passenger seat is not. The seats are leather and the front seats are heated. The car itself always seems to be breaking down and the underneath rattles when I drive fast.

Overall decent vehicle but would not buy again.
Lots of issues, things always seem to be breaking, has a recall on the air bags and they didn't go off when I was in an accident. It needs some improvement. It has lasted me a while with a lot of repairs. The size and style is good and fits my family but I would like something more reliable.

What Do Critics Say About the Chrysler 200?

  • Consumer Reports says the Chrysler 200 is an aging and uncompetitive midsize sedan, with very low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Chrysler 200 a 3.9/5 praising the strong V6 engine, but doesn’t like the cramped cabin.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Chrysler 200 at 4.2/5 and enjoy the upscale interior for the money, but owners don’t like the frequent break downs.

What Common Problems Does the 2013 Chrysler 200 Have?

The most common problems found on the 2013 Chrysler 200 include the engine stalling while driving, excessive noise while shifting between gears, and heater issues. Overall, these problems are more severe than in other midsize cars from 2013.

The engine stalling while driving is a widespread complaint from owners at around 80,000 miles. The source of the problem is usually the power control module (PCM) which is the computer for the engine. Replacing the PCM costs about $1,100 depending on local labor rates.

Excessive transmission noise while shifting shows up in the first 20,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by damage inside the transmission and debris. In many cases, owners have had to replace the transmission to fix the problem, costing over $3,500.

Heater issues are also reported by a lot of owners at around 72,000 miles. The heater core is the source of the problem, and usually it results in the car not heating properly. Changing out the heater core is labor intensive, and costs around $800.

There are 5 recalls, and nearly all of them are not very severe compared to other cars. The most serious recall is for a valve in the fuel tank which can leak. Chrysler dealers will replace the valve for free on affected models. Many of the other recalls are for air bags, which are common on used cars.

How Long Will the 2013 Chrysler 200 Last?

A well-maintained 2013 Chrysler 200 lasts around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as the top-rated Toyota Camry. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than average, according to Repair Pal, at $551 per year.

Since nearly all 2013 Chrysler 200 models will have over 100,000 miles on them, owners should be prepared to replace items including the radiator for $1,100, control arms costing $800, and the camshaft, which costs around $1,000.

accountCircle Kiara J

I have had this car for almost 3 years and it understandably has had issues such as overheating, radio not working, and tire concerns. All fixes were fairly simple though.

accountCircle Madeline H

Like I just said previously. The squealing brakes of my 2013 Chrysler 200 touring have been an issue since the beginning.

accountCircle Marinda B

The 2013 Chrysler 200 limited is very reliable. Problems do not happen frequently. Needs appropriate maintenance like any other vehicle.

accountCircle Kristie E

Yes it is very reliable. I have not had any major problems with this car. It has been very faithful to me.

accountCircle Randall M

Yes it has a lot of problems. A lot of engine problems. And the ac pumps get clogged and have to be flushed with water.

accountCircle Donna D

It is pretty reliable. I have had to change my battery when I shouldn't have had to, the warning lights or whatever like the engine light have turned on when they shouldn't, the brakes are going and I just had to replace the struts.

accountCircle Nin S

The Chrysler 200 is an extremely reliable vehicle. I have not experienced any issues since purchasing it December 2013.

accountCircle Linda M

I haven't had too many issues with my car. Only one time with an issue with the engine. For the most part I think it is a very reliable car.

How Is the Technology?

The entertainment technology in the Chrysler 200 is worse than other midsize sedans from 2013, and you have to upgrade and get optional packages just to add Bluetooth. Advanced safety technology is nonexistent, and it doesn’t even have a rearview camera.

Is the 2013 Chrysler 200 a Good Value?

No, the 2013 Chrysler 200 is not a good value. Blue book prices range from $8,121 to $12,507, making it thousands cheaper than a Honda Accord or Subaru Legacy. When new, the price range was $19,695 to $33,020. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chrysler 200?

There are four models of the Chrysler 200 available in 2013, including the base LX, all the way up to the more luxurious Limited.

LX is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Power Windows & Locks
  • Cruise Control
  • 4-Speaker Stereo System With 3.5mm AUX

Touring is a step-up, adding:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Leather Steering Wheel
  • Automatic Headlights
  • 6-Speaker Stereo System
  • Optional Heated Front Seats & Remote Ignition

S is a sportier model which has:

  • 18-inch Alloy Wheels
  • Black Exterior Accents

  • Fog Lights

What Engines Come In the Chrysler 200?

  • The base engine is a weak 2.4L 4-cylinder which makes 173 horsepower and gets up to 23 MPG.
  • A step up is the optional stronger 3.6L V6 which generates 283 horsepower while getting up to 22 MPG. Performance is good for a sedan, taking 6.9 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chrysler 200 Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chrysler 200?

The 2013 Chrysler 200 offers comfortable seats with enough room for up to 5 people. It’s offered as either a 4-door sedan or a 2-door convertible. Interior materials are more luxurious than some competitors.

Passenger room is great in the front seats, although the short wheelbase leaves limited legroom in the back seats, making it not as comfortable for taller adults.

How Is the Storage In the Chrysler 200?

There’s less cargo space in the 2013 Chrysler 200 compared to other midsize sedans. There’s only enough room for 2-3 suitcases in the back of the sedan and 1-2 in the convertible.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chrysler 200 was launched in 2011, and replaced by the second generation in 2015.

2011: First generation launched and it replaced the older Chrysler Sebring model.

2012: No major changes.

2013: The 200 S is now offered as a package on the Limited and Touring models.

2014: All versions now use a 6-speed automatic transmission.

2015: Fully redesigned second generation with all-new engine, no more convertible option.

2016: Firmer front seats and rearview camera available on limited.

How Does the Chrysler 200 Compare to the Competition?

The Chrysler 200 is worse than other midsize cars from 2013 due to widespread mechanical issues, there are improvements for the 2014 model.

The Dodge Avenger is another sedan which costs about $500 more. Steering feel is a bit better in the Dodge Avenger, but the Chrysler 200 has a higher quality interior. We recommend avoiding both sedans for 2013 since they are built on the same platform, and share the same mechanical problems.

The Honda Accord is a competitor that costs around $4,500 more. Technology and passenger room are both better in the Honda Accord, however, the Chrysler 200 has a more upscale interior with better leather. We recommend the Honda Accord since they last longer and are more affordable to own long term.

Yes, it is a very good vehicle. Large trunk space. Back seats fold down to get access to the back. A little tight with a car seat.

2013 Chrysler limited v6
I bought my car with 35,000 miles. It is paid off and still running strong with now 283,000 miles on it so to all that complain over the 9 yrs I’ve had it I have done regular maintenance on it sure I’ve had to replace a few things from just being older. But she has been one of the best cars I have had. I’m not complaining with all the miles she has on her

Good cute car perfect size for a family!
It's a good size vehicle and a nice family car. It's a smooth riding vehicle and it has nice features. Its comfortable and the sound system is a good loud clear sound. I haven't had any major problems with it and I have had it for a long time. The only issue I have with it is that it was a salvage vehicle when I got it so it had some issues because of the reason but it still has been a good reliable car.

Very slow acceleration-have to really push on the gas to get car to move, poor visibility-very difficult to see out back window (large c pillars), no back up camera, handles rough, noisy -- makes a clunk noise when it shifts even after being serviced by the dealer.

Personal experience with my Chrysler 200.
The cabin is very spacious and comfortable. The sound system is great and the v6 engine has some decent power, although it does give the car subpar city gas mileage. However, the transmission seems to have some faults and I anticipate that I will have to have it serviced. I also experienced cylinder misfires.

My 2013 Chrysler 200 THE ENGINE KEEPS STALLING WHILE DRIVING WITHOUT WARNING. IT IS UNABLE TO RESTART FOR ABOUT 30 00MINUTES, THEN WILL START UP NORMALLY AS IF NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO CHRYSLER SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES TO BE TOLD THAT NOTHING SHOWS UP ON THE DIAGNOSTIC AND THEY CANNOT DETERMINE THE ISSUE TO THIS VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION AND CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME REGARDLESS OF SPEED, LOCATION, OR WHAT THE CAR IS DOING. IT HAPPENS REPEATEDLY, APPROXIMATELY EVERY day say twice to three times a day.... Help me I coould stall one day and then being wont start rite away it could be in a spot not able to push. The first problem with my vehicle is the seatbelt! Not a huge issue but the drivers seat belt it completely twisted and not on the track right. Also the engine light come on every now and then and every time I get it checked by a auto man they say it is showing up an old code and there is not anything they can do about it. The seats are very comfortable though the electric seat mover and adjuster are not screwed onto the side of the seat it is dangling on cords beside my seat and also needs to be fixed! The last thing I’d the front number on my car is a little bit unattached because my boyfriend slightly ran into something. I am also need at least 2 more new tires very soon.

I really enjoy my car and it has been fairly reliable for me through high school and completing college. I travel a lot and it has been great on gas mileage and has gained little wear and tear. I have had issues in winter with high levels of snow, as it is a smaller vehicle it drives well in all weather, but is not high enough to get through drifts that often form.

2013 Chrysler 200: loud engine, peeling trim, but comfortable and powerful.
Engine is very loud, but powerful enough for quick highway maneuvers. Otherwise very comfortable with heated seats, large cabin, and a motorized driver seat. With a model getting up in age, some of the chrome covering various parts like interior door handles, entertainment system knobs, and lining the hood has begun peeling. I made a few passengers have been cut a few times on this peeling trim.

Midnight blue, comfy, simple.
I have had my Chrysler 200 for about 3 years. It ran great with no problems until about year 2. I have had to replace all four tires just recently. The wiper fluid sprayer needs repaired, and it now requires a new set of breaks. However it is fairly comfortable, has a good sound system, a cute little analog clock (that has recently stopped). Another cool feature is the backlighting, 3 colors. But I have never been able to remember or find in the manual, how to switch them so it is always set on green. I do love have the digital temp read and an alert telling you if your tires are low and how much so. The trunk is very spacious however once I have children I don't think it will be big enough for all the extra stuff.

About this care nice features and problems.
The only problem I have had with the car so far it that the check tire light will not go off. It is also a little difficult to replace the headlights when they burn out. Other than that this has been one of the best cars we have owned. The leg room in the front seats is adequate for the average person. There is also access to the trunk through the back seat, this allows for easy access to items that may be in the trunk. There are also 4 cup holders in the back seat, and two in the front.

Sporty yet stylish and get you where you need to go.
I honestly really love my car. It sits well and you can shift the seat rather easily. I do not like how the screen has a glare when the sun is behind you so you cannot really see well if you are driving. The seats are pretty comfortable and it is very spacious on the inside.

The honest review of the 2013 Chrysler 200! Mechanical and body upkeep!
The Chrysler 200 is a reliable vehicle, I own a 2013. We have had to do minimum mechanical work on the vehicle. Minus the normal route repairs... Like oil changes, filters, and tires. The vehicle has had several recalls, one being the catalytic converter, and the other on air bags for rear driver, the vehicle also does a clicking noise in the dashboard, when starting, stopping, changing the air conditioner, and a lot of times now when you are just driving it, but I get used to the noise, and it does not affect the performance of the vehicle. The body of the vehicle is stylish and recognizable when seen, it still looks brand new, excerpt the paint is chipping off on the back side of the door handles.

It is a great vehicle that will last for years if you take care of it.
I bought this car not knowing anything about Chrysler cars. I love my car. It drives smoothly on the road and I love that it has an luxurious look to it. Gas mileage on my car is not bad I usually fill up from empty to full in about thirty dollars which is great.

Affordable, stylish, reliable.
I have never had any issues with this vehicle! I love all of the options and it is relatively easy to drive. The interior is set up for convenience and I feel comfortable in my seat! The oil changes are about $50 every few months and I have had to replace the breaks 2x since I got this car! I have the v6 engine and would not be able to switch back to a four-cylinder very easily. It is a great and durable car that gets me from place to place, though it is challenging to get a car seat in and out of now that I have a baby!

That is is a good riding sedan and has beautiful leather interior.
I like the vehicle for its overall appearance. It is a great size sedan with leather interior. The only negative is not great on gas mileage.

Overall great car, battery placement sucks and trunk does not open all the way.
The car has great mileage. The design is nice too. The car has a problem with corrosion on the battery and needs to cleaned every year or the car will not start m. The batter is also very difficult to get too and causes me to lose time when I need to replace it (the battery cannot be reached from opening the hood, you have to remove the tire on the drivers side, remove the plastic protector and then you are able to get to the battery.).

Dependable for the long haul.
The vehicle drives smoothly, has a comfortable interior, and looks attractive. The only problem I have is that the shift sometimes locks on me when I try to move out of park. Other than that, I have had little to no issues with it. If the new Chryslers were in my price range, I would purchase one again.

Comfort, speed, and beauty.
Sporty and comfortable, it is a good balance of speed and comfort. Never had any major issues so long as regular maintenance is done. Very suitable for a family or just a daily driver to and from work. Gets pretty gas mileage for a 6 cylinder compared to other cars.

Safety, looks, ride and space!
Biggest reason for buying the car was it is safety rating. It is a Chrysler 200 sport. I love the sporty look, interior and wheels. However, it rides smooth, great gas mileage, and the stereo system is good. It has a lot of trunk space. I would recommend it to anyone.

Smooth, luxury vehicle for you.
I love my Chrysler 200 touring. The only issue I have had so far is if you are in drive and you hold your foot on the brake for too long when you first start your car, it will put your transmission in a weird mode and your rpms will run high. Other than that, it is a smooth, luxury vehicle. I love it.

I love the heated seats. I love the moon roof. I love how it drives and how dependable it is.
It drives great, the ride is smooth and it is very dependable car.

Would recommend this car!
I have not had any problems with this vehicle. It has been reliable, safe, and has gotten me to many places over the last few years. The gas mileage is great, and the ride is very smooth. For a car, there is plenty of room to store/put things when travel or shopping. The trunk space is quite large and there is also plenty of room in the back seat. One thing that I struggle with is getting my son in and out of his car seat because it is so low to the ground. Other than that I am happy with this car.

Great looking super reliable.
My Chrysler 200 is very comfortable, it is reliable, it handles well, it is been good on fuel mileage, it looks good, nice body style, it's been great for long drives as it is comfortable and smooth on the road. I have had no issues with it, mechanically or otherwise.

That it is very good on gas.
Spent $1000 to fix AC fan when still under 50,000 miles. Also had to get gear shifter repaired & air bag replaced for $100. Mileage should be better. Otherwise a good car.

A good car, but a little small for us.
It is a little small for my husband to drive. He is six foot four inches tall. I would like a slightly larger. The mileage is pretty good. I love the heated seats. It has good drink cup holders in the front and drop down ones in the back seat. Love the low tire icon on the dashboard,

The light blue color is very nice.
Cruise control works sometimes and does not the rest and there is not rhyme or reason to when it does work. The seats are uncomfortable and cause my back and leg pain to flare up. The passenger seat does not beep when they do not have their seat belt on.

Love all the perks. Limited and older edition is far better than newer models!
Perfect smaller luxury sedan! Heated seats and sunroof are great through the seasons. Had the 2016 200 and prefer the older model over the newer. Sound system and stereo are great for factory. Have some issues connecting Bluetooth, but navigation is on.

Gas saver on interstate traveling car.
It drives amazing on the interstate I can go 5 hours with a full tank of gas perform. And is pretty good it's a reliable car it does rain in my car and the radio goes in and out sometimes which is annoying but for the most part it's a good car better than the previous car I had.
