2005 Chrysler 300 Review: The Best Car in its Class, but it’s Effectively a Class of One

Gilbert Smith
Mar 6, 2023

The 2005 Chrysler 300 finds the middle ground between muscle car performance and luxury car comfort. The result is a car that’s just as fun to drive as it is classy. Unfortunately, it’s not the most-cost effective option on the market.

Front angle view.
likeFilled The Good
Mercedes-Benz design philosophies and engineering make the Chrysler 300 the classiest and most comfortable muscle car on the road.
dislikeFilled The Bad
You probably couldn’t make a worse daily-driver if you were trying. It’s a bit of a land-yacht, and the V6 models don’t have the “oomph” you expect of a muscle car.

Is the 2005 Chrysler 300 a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – For what it is, the 2005 Chrysler 300 is awesome. But how many uses do you really have for a two-ton muscle car with a luxury interior?
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – The only reason it’s not a perfect ten is because it doesn’t come with a pickup bed in the back. This is one of the most comfortable cars on the road today.
  • Reliability 6/10 – You’ll probably make the first 200,000 miles with no major repairs. But when they start to add up, they really start to add up.
  • Safety 8/10 – Onboard safety tech is better than average for a 2005 sedan, and crash test scores are solid.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – The base entry averages a respectable 21/28 miles to the gallon, city/highway, but the SRT8 model gets a measly 14/20. There are full-size trucks that are more efficient than that.
  • Value 5/10 – The entry-level 300 isn’t a terrible bargain, priced in the low-$4,000 range. But the higher-end models can go up to nine grand, which, combined with lousy fuel economy, expensive repairs, and short life expectancy, makes the car a pretty lousy deal overall.

It is very fast much faster than it will be expected to be.
The Chrysler is a very good vehicle and I would not trade it for a sports car it has all the essentials. Comes with a nice hemi. It is very good on gas. The factory radio is not all what it should be. The tag lights go out often. That would be the only thing not to like about the 300c model.

Safety details and accident review.
No good in snow overall has been a good car. Has held up well when in a accident. I feel it is a safe vehicle plan on buying a new 300 as my next vehicle as well due to all the safety features offered. The only thing I wish would be different would be color options.

Comfort and reliability make it an important factor for me.
Love it. Roomy and reliable. Easy to maintain. No engine issues this far. Car stereo is perfect.. Gas mileage is not bad. Could be better on gas mileage. Daily driver and perfect for families. I feel secure and safe when I drive my car. Overall feel is a 10 out of 10.

A very reliable and luxurious car.
My vehicle is super good in gas even when I go get gas it just takes up to like 30-40 dollars to get full and lasts me a whole week going to college 30 mins away from where I live. I have had the car for almost a year and it has not broken down or anything a very reliable to go have and it is very comfortable too. The car is also a luxury car it looks good in the inside and out it is not very fast but it runs so smooth and looks great. I have taken the car to a lot of place and it is still intact and running super good.

My Chrysler 300 is a hemi.
My 300 runs real good. It is fast as a muscle car. The one and only problem I have had with it is the seat light will not go off. It is very comfortable. Leather heated seats. Plenty of room in back. Smooth ride for long distance drives. It will up and go with no problems. Stereo sounds real good. I love my 300.

I like the way it drivers, the size, and the comfort. It drives smoothly. It is roomy inside but not big overall.
It is a very dependable car. It is easy to drive and looks good.

Decent Car for the Price. Low reliability.
The performance is decent for the price. The only problem I have had with this vehicle is with reliability. Every few thousand miles it must be taken in to the shop.

Leather, heated, power seats and a power sunroof.
This is not the kind of car that I really pictured for myself. I like cars that sit up a little higher off of the ground. I like that it does have leather heated seats, and a sunroof, but I would like it a little more if it had a back windshield wiper.

My vehicle is blue gray and has no modifications. It is The base model.
So far my Chrysler 300 has been a very reliable car. I bought it used and have had for 2 years, only having minimal problems such as routine maintenance. The gas mileage isn't terrible on it and the acceleration isn't bad either. The motor is strong and the sound system is great. I only dislike the car because it isn't My style.

Older Chrysler 300 - 2005
It's an older car and was given to us second hand. I personally prefer a smaller car, and find it hard to see out of all the windows since I am only 5 feet tall. The car gives a smooth drive but being an older car, requires a lot of upkeep and work to keep it running well.
accountCircle Lois T
Its old, ready to rust. Doors freeze easy in winter. Frosts on inside of windows.
Do not like rear wheel drive. Would rather sit up higher. Not the best on gas. That's about all the complaints I have about it.

This was car was in 3 accidents with my family in it and it has been safe for them.
I like the way it drives and it's easy to work on and I like the way it looks. I dislike the problems the car has had even though I kept up with the maintenance.

The way it drives on the highway. The way it starts every time.
I like that it drives well. It always starts. I have not had any problems with it. I also like the view I have from the windshield. The rear view mirror has good sight.

Wonderful small-family car.
The Chrysler 300 breaks down easily is extremely hard to repair and the car waste to much gas for a small car. The interior is leather which rips easily as well and the carpet in the trunk falls apart.

What Do Critics Say About the 2005 Chrysler 300?

Consumer Reports were impressed with the strong, bold styling of the 2005 Chrysler 300 but found the vehicle fairly underwhelming overall. They considered the ride, handling, V6 engine performance, and interior adequate, but far from class-leading.

Kelley Blue Book users give the 300 a very strong 90% recommendation. Drivers praised the Chrysler 300’s reliable powertrain, solid handling, and smooth ride, with one driver saying that it “rides like a magic carpet after 17 years on the road.”

Edmunds praised the 300’s “chiseled and masculine” good looks, they liked the powerful V8 engine in the 300C model, and they found the overall experience of driving one to be luxurious. They criticized the base V6 for being a bit sluggish, and the stereo controls for being non-intuitive.

What Common Problems Does the 2005 Chrysler 300 Have?

Airbags have been the 2005 Chrysler 300’s biggest problem, making up 286 of the car’s 1,115 total complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There have been three airbag recalls, the last one in 2016, but reports of airbag warning lights persist as late as 2022.

There are 121 complaints on file for fuel/propulsion, and another 94 for the fuel system. The most worrying issue being reported: A strong gasoline smell inside the cabin and outside the car when the tank is full. The issue seems to be related to a faulty o-ring. There have been no recalls or investigations into the matter.

The 2005 Chrysler 300 has 239 powertrain complaints on file, and 121 for engine problems. One of the most concerning issues here sees the car stalling out when the fuel tank is topped off. The engine continues to sputter and stall until the excess fuel has been used.

There have been 7 recalls and 1,115 complaints registered with the NHTSA for the 2005 Chrysler 300. 1,115 complaints might not be worrying on its own, but when you consider that so many of these are for powertrain and engine issues, and possible fuel leaks, it gets to be concerning.x

How Long Will the 2005 Chrysler 300 Last?

You should expect a used 2005 Chrysler 300 to last a maximum of 200,000 miles before the more expensive repairs start to pile up. If you’re buying a used 300 you’ll want to shop for one with the lowest mileage you can find, as these cars can’t match the longevity of comparable Hondas, Fords, and Toyotas.

RepairPal estimate an annual maintenance cost of $631, with the most expensive common fixes being new oil pan gaskets, starting at around $438, and trans oil cooler lines at $440.

accountCircle Robin P

It is a very reliable vehicle. I have had no problems with it so far. Only the basic maintenance (oil change, tire rotation, fluid levels) is all I have had to do.

accountCircle Chase J

Yes very reliable it was bought when they first came out with the model and the dealership to this day calls me even now wanting to know if I want to sell it. No problems at all

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology onboard the 2005 Chrysler 300 is pretty good for the model year. You get a CD player as a standard feature and a six-disc CD changer in the higher trim levels. The SRT8 comes with an MP3 player and six Boston Acoustics speakers.

Safety technology is, likewise, pretty good for 2005. You’ve got next-gen airbags with occupant sensors as a standard feature, and the higher trim levels include traction control, anti-lock brakes, and even parking assist, which was almost unheard of in 2005.

Is the 2005 Chrysler 300 a Good Value?

An entry-level 2005 Chrysler 300 is a fair value, the other ones, not so much. The base model typically lists at around $4,209 with 150,000 miles on the odometer. At the higher end, 300C SRT8 models typically list at around $8,295, and the fair market range goes over nine thousand bucks.

When you consider the car’s relatively short life expectancy and moderate cost of ownership, it’s just not worth it at anything more than four, five thousand dollars, especially considering that an MP3 player isn’t as impressive a feature now as it was back in 2005.

What are the Different Models of the 2005 Chrysler 300?

The 2005 Chrysler 300 is available in a V6 and a V8 line, each with a base and a high-end model, and each with an optional all-wheel drive variant, for six models total.

What Engines Come In the 2005 Chrysler 300?

  • The 300’s starter engine is a 2.7L V6 delivering 190 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission in rear wheel drive and averages 21/28 miles to the gallon, city/highway.
  • In the 300 Touring model you’ll find a 3.5L V6 delivering 250 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic in rear wheel drive in the Touring model, or 5-speed automatic in all wheel drive in the Touring AWD, and it averages 19/27 miles to the gallon in rear wheel drive, and 17/24 in AWD.
  • The 300C comes packed with a 5.7L Hemi delivering 340 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 5-speed automatic in rear wheel drive in the standard 300C, and all wheel drive in the 300C AWD model. The 5.7L averages 17/25 miles to the gallon in rear wheel drive, or 17/24 in AWD.
  • In the 300C SRT8 you’ll find a 6.1L SRT Hemi V8 delivering 425 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 5-speed automatic, it’s configured in rear wheel drive, and it averages 14/20 miles to the gallon.

What Colors Does the 2005 Chrysler 300 Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2005 Chrysler 300?

The 2005 Chrysler 300 is one of the most comfortable cars on the road today. You won’t find many complaints on file for the suspension, you’ve got 56 inches of hip room in the back so seating five adults in the car should be no issue, and the cabin is more luxurious than most in this class.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2005 Chrysler 300 Have?

The 2005 Chrysler 300 can pack 15.6 cubic feet in the trunk. That‘s enough for four or five medium sized suitcases, and you can fold the back seats down if you need any additional space. Inside, you’ll find plenty of pockets, slots, and cupholders for everything you want to bring with you.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The 2005 Chrysler 300 was the first model year in the 1st Generation for the full-size sedan, running from 2005 to 2010.

2005: The 300 first hit the market with a chassis built on the rear-wheel Chrysler LX platform. The bold appearance was inspired by Mercedes-Benz design principles, with AWD models actually using Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC system.

2006: 2006 saw the introduction of a diesel-powered V6 model, courtesy of a Mercedes-Benz 3.0L.

2007: Adaptive cruise control and SmartBeam headlights were added as options for 2007, and the wheels were given a flashy new redesign.

2008: Chrysler debuted a load of new entertainment features for 2008, including Sirius Backseat TV, and the Chrysler MyGig, a 20-gig storage system hosting music, photos, and navigation information.

How Does the 2005 Chrysler 300 Compare to the Competition?

The 2005 Chrysler 300 dominates its own unique niche as a muscle car with some luxury car leanings. It doesn’t have many direct competitors, but the 2005 Ford Mustang offers slightly better performance at the entry level, and costs around $3,000 more. At the higher end, a 300C delivers more power for the same price.

Other muscle cars are generally so expensive that they don’t really compete with the 300 and the Mustang. A Pontiac GTO, for instance, starts in the $15,000 range, which is probably more than you want to spend on a 2005 model car.

For what it is, the Chrysler 300 is the best in class. Muscle/luxury cars are kind of a niche market.

280,000 miles and still going - A/C not the best
I bought mine as a dealer demo with 20,000 miles on it. I've had to replace the A/C compressor twice in 18 years, so not impressed there. My wife ran over a curb about a month ago and took out the radiator support, sub-frame, steering rack and oil pan. She stopped immediately so the engine wasn't hurt. The insurance company totaled it but I loved the car enough to take a reduced pay-off and keep it. The repairs were less than the insurance company paid. That was the biggest single expense we've had (and we made $900 on the deal). Other than routine maintenance other repairs have been: 1) the front suspension was repaired at about 200,000 miles, 2) the oil pressure sending unit was replaced at 230,000 miles, 3) the thermostat and timing belt were replaced at 250,000 miles. I've also replaced one door lock, the third brake light, the headlight switch assembly, the radiator fan, and the trunk lid supports. There are three unrepaired issues: 1) The power mirror on the passenger side, 2) the clock spring assembly for the turn signal, and 3) one O2 sensor. Bottom line: Yeah, I spend some money here and there, but this has been a strong vehicle, especially the power train. The thought of buying a newer vehicle with all the additional electronics will probably keep me doing repairs instead of buying new.

The good and the bad
The 5.7 Hemi is a truck engine and will last 250000 miles. The Mercedes tranny is bullet proof. With over 190000 miles and poor maintenance by the previous owner my engine is strong with 0-60 still under 6 seconds, the tranny shifts smooth, and there is no rust, this in northeast weather. The shift interlock is garbage with cheap plastic parts and will go so expect sooner or later to be stuck in park thinking the tranny is shot waiting for a tow ( probably in the pouring rain ) The front suspension on these cars are a problem so expect repairs, for some stupid reason there is no key lock for the trunk so if the cable snaps from the cab trunk release you have a problem. Another stupid thing is there is no way to add or check the transmission fluid without going to the dealer. The claim you don't have to but me and the rest of the world like to check the tranny fluid just in case.

2005 Chrysler 300 with low gas mileage.
The 2005 Chrysler 300 is a very reliable car. It currently has low mileage on it, so that could have something to do with it as well. I have never had any issues with it, even in -50 degree weather it still ran. I can get through any amount of snow, and does it with ease. With it is age I have noticed some problems, such as the blinker breaking to where it does not turn off on its own. As well as the oil running out faster than normal. Another thing with this vehicle, is that it has really low gas mileage. I find myself filling up with gas more often than I should need to. The leather interior holds up great, as well as the outside.

The parts for vehicle and the price to have them put on are expensive.
I do not like the gas mileage on my vehicle especially with gas prices being so high, but it is comfy and roomy.

2005 Chrysler 300 limited. Bought it from LBC auto sales in Houston.
It is one of the vehicles I bought just recently with 103,000 miles at LBC auto sales in Houston. It has a clear title, looks clean and very spacious inside. The dealer I bought from said the car was nice without any issues. After three days it started stopping went to test the battery. It was bad. I bought a new one gold from AutoZone, then the sales associate told me the alternator is also bad. I had to buy a new one to. After a week or so. The egr valve monitor failed. Boy, I even do not know what to do next. I bought the car at a good 7,000 dollars.

It's important to tell everyone i have a hemi, which if you are unaware can be a little dangerous. It's important not to punch the pedal because with the hemi she goes 0 to 100 quick!
I like the space i have inside my car. I also love the smoothness of driving when elevating in speed because of the Hemi. I don't like the color which when d***y you can easily see everything. I love my sound system and the sunroof.

It rides low it drives fast and looks better than most anything out there.
My Chrysler 300 is amazing except for the aluminum heads. I have blown up two motors in this car because of overheating and piston problems caused by that. Hemi needs to figure that out other than that I love this car the look the ride pure comfort. Other than hemis problems the car is solid.

Built well. Great car. Luxury vehicle. Reliable. Comfortable and roomy
My car is a reliable luxury vehicle. I like it because it is very classy looking and has a very strong engine

I really like how it is very spacious.
I lucked out with this car! Its spacious very nice and has been great! Even with high mileage this car works awesome. I don't really have any negative things to say, the car performance is great especially uphill. As long as you do your regular oil changes this car is a beauty better than some newer cars.

Keep that maintenance schedule.
We bought our Chrysler 300 in January 2011. The car is a 2007. From January 2011 until February 2019 the car was in the shop once. The part was $60 and the dealer actually gave us free labor because the part was easy to replace.we still own the car today and my son gave it a new two tone paint job and it looks beautiful with the dark grey sides and metallic black hood. Top. And trunk with everything else on the topsides metallic black also. These are great cars and with proper schedule maintenance they will last many years.

2005 Chrysler 300 that runs very well despite a few annoying issues.
Overall, this car performs well given its age but there have been some problems that have shown up. My car had a problem with the gear shift that apparently is not only a problem that the older models have but also appears in newer models. Also, there is a bizarre design decision to put the battery in the trunk of the car. This means that if the battery in the car dies you will have to reach it in the trunk. But because the trunk does not have a manual release you'll have to manually unlock the car, climb into the trunk from the back seats and pull on the automatic release in the trunk. It is a very annoying process that takes way too long. In terms of features and comfort the car is quite nice and has a large selection of options for people to choose (heated seats, nice speakers, etc.). Finally, another thing to note is that this car has a very low mpg so that cost should be taken into account.

It is comfortable, rides nice. Lots of space!.
I was the first owner. I always wanted a 300, I had to beg my parents for the car. I hate its breaking down on me. It's still a dependable car. I still can get from point a to b. I put a lot of money into but its a paid for car.

It has some simple noises that could be very distracting.
It's the best car I've had ever but it is slowly coming apart piece by piece.
