2017 Chrysler Pacifica Review: Luxury Minivan With Bad Transmission & Engine Problems

Alex Showalter
Nov 19, 2022

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica lasts around 200,000 miles with some serious transmission and engine issues. At $16,775 to $24,500, it’s cheaper than some other vans, but not worth it when you will have to spend thousands to keep it running.

The interior is very upscale for a minivan, the stow ‘n go seating works great for cargo and the stereo system offers excellent features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine isn’t as efficient as other minivans, all of the advanced safety technology is optional and ownership costs are higher than the competition.

Is the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica a Good Used Minivan?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2017 is a bad year for the Chrysler Pacifica since there are widespread mechanical problems, giving it a low overall score. Owner reviews complain about door issues, A/C system failures, as well as expensive repair bills.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – Interior materials are more luxurious than other minivans, the seats are extremely comfortable, cargo space is also fantastic.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are some expensive engine & transmission problems which show up on the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. Avoid models from 2017-2018, while 20192022 are more reliable choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance in the Chrysler Pacifica is quicker than other minivans, yet it’s still not a sports car.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is a safe minivan, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. A rearview camera is standard. Optional safety technology includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, brake assistance, as well as a surround-view camera.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 22 MPG, giving 418 miles of range from the 19 gallon tank. Gas costs are $33 cheaper than average, at $237 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – Prices are low on the Chrysler Pacifica, although expensive mechanical problems make it expensive to own long-term.

Totally satisfied Chrysler Pacifica customer
This van is comfortable to ride in and a pleasure to drive. It has all the features I wanted and more. It has been very reliable and gets great fueled mileage on the many long trips we have taken and the granddaughters love the built in wireless DVD players

Chrysler Pacifica great vehicle with plenty of room.
We have a Chrysler Pacifica and it has been a great family vehicle for our family of five. It is very easy for the kids to get in and out there is plenty of room and tons of extras like the dvd player, navigation system, hands free, and being able to fold the seats down flat making for ton of space when needing to haul something big.

Space, design and good on travels.
Pacifica is very spacious and nice to drive. Kids have plenty space to move, and also they can watch they're movies on a little screen in back of my seat. The car also have reclining seats and a lot of space to bags, grocery stuff. Good on travels, very comfortable.

The most important part is having a car that has a vacuum cleaner I have 3boys.
My car has everything, vacuum TVs, a full moon roof, you can fold the seats down great on gas and also very roomy.

Overall best value and minivan on the market.
This is by far the best car I have had. The stow-and-go seating is perfect for a family with large dogs, kids who play sports or those who overpack! The performance is great, only requires an oil change about every 10,000 miles and gives you warnings as you get closer. Uconnect and CarPlay are very beneficial. The back up camera and blindspot notifiers are fantastic. My only complaint would be that the key fob does not work from very far away, and the motion sensor for the doors is very hard to use. We paid extra for it and find we never use it because we cannot seem to get our foot to go in the correct spot. I would not recommended adding it on. Otherwise this is a great vehicle and I will be leasing another one when my current one expires.

It's a fantastic family safe vehicle with tons of space!
I like how spacious it is. We can fit all our children and our gear and groceries in with room to spare. It drives so smoothly.

Pacifica - the family van.
The pacifica is a great family car. Plenty of room with automatic doors and automatic lift it makes life easier. The pacifica can also tow our minivan making it nice to go on vacations with our camper and our dogs. It is very comfortable and very stylish. It is probably the best looking mini van on the market. This van gets good gas mileage and drives excellent on the highway.
accountCircle Tiffany T
The best minivan you will ever find.
My vehicle has everything you need in a van. It has comfortable leather seating which makes cleaning us messes a breeze with a heated feature during those cold winter days. It has dual controls for air conditioning, so fighting over the thermostat is a thing of the past. It has one touch controls for the doors and hatch, so no more struggling with heavy doors. It even has a remote start feature. They really thought of just about everything. The only thing it does not come with is an entertainment system for the little ones.

Do not buy Chrysler Pacifica.
The doors continually open again when using automatic close. There seems to be a lag in the electrical system. Pickup is horrible in it too when coming off the line. It handles horrible as well. I cannot wait to return it at the end of lease it is worst vehicle I have ever driven.

Not fondness of my Chrysler Pacifica
The Heat and AC in this van are hard to keep at comfortable levels. They quickly become too hot or too cold and have to constantly be manipulated. Also the Speaker phone is not near loud enough for me to hear the people on the other end. Most annoying is the gas tank! It continually clicks off when pumping if the pump isn't in the perfect position.

Do not even think of buying this vehicle.
This piece of garbage has been nothing but a headache. Chrysler is the worst.

Never buy the Chrysler pacifica!
It is been in for 4 recalls and I have had 2 major issues with it as well - it is got under 30,000 miles - worst car I have ever purchased. I buy new cars knowing that I will be without incident for at least 3 years - I have had this 2 1/2 years and have spent too much time in the dealership!

Total junk
Worst vehicle ever. Way to many electrical issues, “service shifter” locks the van up in middle of the street. Severe safety issue with this van, wife almost killed twice when vehicle locks you up in park after backing into a street.

Power steering problems over several times.
My vehicle brand new would lose power steering. This happened several times and all they did was give me free oil change. My doors are constantly creaky and nothing is ever resolved without getting extremely rude. Takes weeks to get a resolution from Chrysler.

Not to buy it because all the issues
I do not like anything about it at all. We have nothing but issues with it like electrical problems and it drives horrible

I do not find the Chrysler Pacifica to be user friendly
The Chrysler Pacifica is a comfortable and reliable ride but the electrical system in the radio has issues the dealership can't fix

What Do Critics Say About the Chrysler Pacifica?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica has been surpassed by offerings from Toyota & Honda, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Pacifica at 3.7/5, praising the spacious third row of seats, but doesn’t like the clunky transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Chrysler Pacifica a 4.2/5, enjoying the luxurious interior for the money, but owners don’t like the expensive repair costs.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica include shifting hard between gears, the engine dying while driving, as well as bubbling paint. Overall, these problems are more severe than other minivans, leading to higher repair costs as well.

Shifting hard between gears is a widespread complaint from Chrysler Pacifica owners in the first 50,000 miles. There are several reasons the transmission may not shift properly, including software, a failed transmission control module, as well as physical damage to the transmission.  Updating the software costs around $100, replacing the transmission control module is roughly $1,300, while changing out the transmission is $4,000.

The engine dying while driving also shows up on a lot of Chrysler Pacifica models at around 30,000 miles. There are some problems with the electronic throttle controller which can cause the van to stall. Replacing the controller costs $850. Many engine sensors can also go bad, costing $100 to $500 to change out.

Bubbling paint is another problem mentioned by many Chrysler Pacifica owners at roughly 40,000 miles. Paint throughout the van, particularly on the hood, tends to wear out quickly, leading to excessive bubbling. Repainting the affected areas costs about $1,000 per panel.

There are 8 recalls on the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, which is worse than other minivans from the same year. The most serious recalls cover rear pinon brackets cracking, rear brakes failing, as well as cruise control failing. These all increase the risk of an accident. Chrysler will replace and reprogram the systems on affected vans to make them safer.

How Long Will the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Chrysler Pacifica may last around 200,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Sienna. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other minivans, according to data from Repair Pal, at $478 per year.

As a Chrysler Pacifica ages, reaching over 100,000 miles, buyers should be prepared to replace some items. They include the A/C condenser for $800, drive belt idler pulley for $275, as well as the engine coolant temperature sensor which costs $500.

accountCircle Dan W

Very reliable. No problems. Just kept up with the required maintenance, oil changes, tire rotation etc.

accountCircle Jessica M

So far the vehicle has been good on gas, runs well and is comfortable for my family of 7 to ride in for traveling.

accountCircle Joseph G

The van is reliable, but there were a few issues related to the electronics and paint. None of these issues made the van unable to be driven. It just required a trip back to the dealer.

accountCircle Heather H

I have owned this car for a year, the only problem I have encountered is both batteries went out at the same time and cost $400 to replace both.

accountCircle Tiffany T

It is very reliable! I have not had any problems with it since I bought it mechanical or otherwise.

accountCircle Maria C

The electric doors seem to be the most at risk for problems — sometimes they stick a bit or fail to open/close all the way — but it hasn't been a major problem in the 2 years I've had the car.

accountCircle Stephanie C

None. Have had this vehicle for over 3 years and it has never broken down or left me stranded. The only thing I don't like is it's color which is black (my former husband bought it, he is deceased now.

accountCircle Breanna D

Yes it is very reliable. No I have not had problems so far. I would recommend it to a friend or family member.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good with a standard 5-inch touchscreen or a larger optional 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the dash. Safety technology is good as well, with a standard rearview camera. Optional driver assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, brake assist, parallel park assist, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, as well as a surround-view camera.

Is the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica a Good Value?

No, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is a bad value since there are some expensive problems. Blue book prices range from $16,775 to $24,500, making it cheaper than a Honda Odyssey and similar to a Dodge Grand Caravan. When new, the price range was $28,995 to $42,895. Depreciation is worse than other vans, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Chrysler Pacifica?

The engine found in the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is a strong 3.6L V6 which makes 287 horsepower while getting up to 22 MPG. It’s paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Performance is good for a minivan, taking 7.7 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chrysler Pacifica Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chrysler Pacifica?

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is an extremely comfortable minivan with seating for 7 to 8 passengers, depending on the configuration. Seating is very nice, offering a lot of cushioning and support for long drives.

Passenger room is fantastic throughout the cabin with plenty of room for adults in the rear seats as well.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chrysler Pacifica Have?

Cargo space is excellent, there’s enough space for 5-6 suitcases behind the third row, around 15 with the third row folded flat. There’s room for over 20 with all of the seats folded.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chrysler Pacifica minivan was introduced in 2017, and is still being made as of 2022.

2017: First generation introduced, replacing the outgoing Chrysler Town & Country with new styling, engines, and technology.

2018: New entry level L model, standard Appel CarPlay & Android auto, upgraded 8.4-inch Uconnect system.

2019: No major changes.

2020: All-wheel drive offered as an optional upgrade, minor interior styling changes.

2021: Minor exterior styling changes, wireless Apple CarPlay added, more standard driver safety technology.

2022: Amazon Fire TV integrated into rear-seat entertainment system.

How Does the Chrysler Pacifica Compare to the Competition?

The Chrysler Pacifica is worse than other minivans on the market from 2017 since there are expensive mechanical problems which show up as the van ages, making it one to avoid.

The Honda Odyssey is another minivan which costs around $2,000 more. Reliability ratings are much better on the Honda Odyssey, while the Chrysler Pacifica offers a nicer interior for the money. We recommend the Honda Odyssey since they are more affordable to own long-term.

The Dodge Grand Caravan is another competitor, which is available for $2,000 less. Interior materials are more durable in the Dodge Grand Caravan, while the Chrysler Pacifica offers better optional safety technology. We recommend the Dodge Grand Caravan since there are fewer mechanical problems reported by customers.

Do Owners Recommend the Chrysler Pacifica?

accountCircle Dan W

Yes. Has all the options I need. Comfortable, good gas mileage. Pleasure to drive. No mechanical issues.

accountCircle Jessica M

Yes so far, the vehicle is spacious, has a lot of features, and good on gas. I love the trunk space compared to other vehicles with 3rd row seating.

accountCircle Joseph G

Yes it is very comfortable, functional and drives great. It has had a few issues related to the electronics, but they have been resolved. There was also a paint issue that was repaired under warranty.

accountCircle Heather H

It is a great vehicle. There is plenty of space for my items being brought to the vendor shows I travel to as well as accommodates my family. We always have plenty of room traveling and are all comfortable.

accountCircle Tiffany T

Absolutely! I love the safety features including the rear view camera as well as the automatic brakes if the vehicle detects something on the camera. The leather interior also makes for easy clean up (who does not need that with small children). I also like that it has a navigation system integrated into the car that uses satellite instead of a card that you have to go to the dealership for.

accountCircle Martin C

The best family minivan for any type of family.
Very reliable, comfortable and easy to drive. The stow and go seats are easy to operate and the sunken trunk area makes it easy to lift things out. Excellent gas mileage and great handling in bad weather. Very versatile for me and my family no matter what the occasion.

One of my favorite parts is the built in sun shades. It is awesome for the kids.
I love the way this car drives. It is smooth and has a lot of space for a family of 6. The leather is comfortable and the heated seats are a plus. The features include stow and go for the seats (an easy convenient way to stow the bucket seats in the middle section.

Great features and dependable van.
There are lots of nice features like backup sensors and camera, climate controls, motorized driver seat, flexible seating, heated leather seats, built-in GPS. The most noticeable problem with the van is that one of the sliding doors refuses to close about 10% of the time.

Nice ride, not the greatest engine.
The pacifica rides nice and very roomy, it gets good gas mileage too. It has some pretty cool features like keyless entry, Bluetooth, automatic door opener and much more. The cons of my pacifica is that I had some engine issues which shouldn't of happened since it was only a year old. It sometimes feels like it is slipping which is not good.

Chrysler pacifica minivan. Perfect for mom!
Love the ease of opening and closing trunk without having to use my hands. This is helpful with a cart or hand full of groceries. The entire van is so spacious. Also enjoy the dual screens for kids..They can each watch their own show or play a game. Also like the dual temperature settings and rear having its own as well.
accountCircle Kevin Y on June 7, 2021
Very happy with all the features it has.
I am very happy with it. We have had 5 Chrysler vans and have had fabulous experiences with all. I do wish I would have gotten the entertainment package. At the time we thought everyone has their own devices so we did not spend the money for it and wished we would have.
accountCircle Tab A on June 5, 2021
Stow away seating is the best feature for families with children.
We chose the pacifica because it has stow away seats that fold right down into the floor. This is a great feature when you are going on trips and need room to take your 'stuff' for the family. When we go on a trip we can move around our car seats and stow away one of the center row seats to have room for my baby supplies and to better access the kids quickly while on the road for hours. When we arrive at our location we can easily put the seat and car seats back to normal so we then have the room to take friends or other family places in the van when we wish to go somewhere. When we pack to return home we can easily change around the van again. Best feature!
accountCircle Ben E on June 4, 2021
Great family vehicle and storage.
Great. Electronics are sometimes iffy but usually works well. Smooth ride. Great functionality. It is a great family vehicle. I do not believe you can connect the TVs to a phone or tablet so that would be nice. Overall it is a great vehicle and I would recommend.
accountCircle Han L on May 30, 2021
Great features, unpredictable driving experience.
The features such as 360 degree cameras for backing out, staying in lane, turning off engine when stopped, lane assist, and crash sensing is very helpful and has made parking and driving a lot easier. However, the acceleration seems very random at times and does not seem responsive with how much the accelerator is pressed. The gear shifting seems random at times, as the vehicle accelerates suddenly at times and does not get faster when accelerated at other times.
accountCircle Susan A on May 27, 2021
Easy stow and go is great, but had trouble with transmission.
The vehicle is great for driving my kids around. Love the monitors in the back of the driver side and front passenger headrest. Love the 360 camera view and the stow and go in the middle and last row. However, our major frustration with our specific vehicle is the transmission. Every once in awhile there will be a jerky motion while the vehicle is trying to accelerate and on 2 occasions I would press the gas to go from a stop, it would move forward just about 10 mph but would not accelerate any further. I thought the car was going to die out in the middle of the intersection.
accountCircle Lindsey M on May 25, 2021
Lots of room for the family.
I love all the space, especially the trunk space. The seats fold all the way into the floor so its flat. Makes it very easy to transport big things like furniture. Everyone has enough room. The ride is smooth and the automatic doors are very helpful with young kids.

Transmission system shift.
We are really happy with it for the most part. It is a bit unsettling when trying to accelerate just a tiny bit, as incline to get into our garage - little bit not quite enough so try to add tiny bit more, it will shift, jerk & suddenly add more than I want!

My vehicle is the base model. I wish I had more options. It is fine for short trips but for longer trips I wish I would have spent more for added comfort. I would like the entertainment system for the kids, temperature setting climate control, lane assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Too many issues for a new vehicle.
The vehicle only has 33,000 miles and we've already had multiple electronic issues, had to replace the stock tires, and have had the check engine light illuminated twice. There is also a recurring transmission issue which makes the car “jump” when accelerating that the dealership cannot duplicate and therefore cannot fix.
accountCircle Janelle J on April 14, 2021
Lots of space for family or all the extra things!
I really love all the space in my van. It has a lot of cup holders. I love that I have ample seating but can also put seats down if I need to haul something. The doors make some added noise and the leather seams to not be so durable from car seat wear.
accountCircle Ashley S on April 13, 2021
Very nice car, however it has broken many times.
We have only had the car for 3 years and the radio broke many times and we had to get it fixed. The charging ports only work half of the time. The door broke twice. I like how you can adjust where the sound is in the car, and I like that it does not have a stick. I like how you can take out the middle seat if you want, but there should be more places to place things in the front.
accountCircle Ashley T on April 3, 2021
My take on Chrysler pacifica 2017.
The bolts from the seats came out and had to be re-tightened. Transmission problems - revving to high. Comfortable. Sliding door issues - noise and opening by itself. Wipers do not last long, no matter what brand. Rear hatch had to be fixed because it wouldn't open. Gas mileage is good. Been in the shop more than 6 times in the 3 years it is been owned.

Awesome, safe family car with great features.
I love the stow and go seats, and the automatic doors. They key fob and knob shifter took a bit of getting used to but I do very much enjoy both of those now. I feel like the transmission and engine could be a bit more powerful, but the ride is smooth. The top safety rating was what made this car an easy choice for me.

I love my Chrysler Pacifica! I love how much room there is for my whole family. The stow and go seats are great for when I need the extra space for luggage on trips. One thing I don't absolutely love is, the automatic doors aren't completely childproof and will still close until you apply force to the door.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica - Not your usual minivan
I love all the tech in my Pacifica, especially the surround cameras and safety features. It's also a very comfortable vehicle. I drive a lot and rarely feel stiff or tired after long drives. I was resistant to buy a minivan but this Pacifica feels like a classy SUV. The styling is very sleek. We also have the eight seat model, and the removable 8th seat and stow n go seats are very easy to use. It takes just a minute or two to get a flat back seat. I highly recommend the 2017 Pacifica.

Like all the features - few issues.
One of the sensors was bad and kept turning the check engine light on. This sensor had to be replaced. The steering seems a little sluggish at times. Other than that, we have had no other issues with the vehicle. We like all the features - backup camera, car in dead spot mirror light, keyless door opener and ignition, power doors, easy stow and go seats, data displays, cap less gas tank.

It is wonderful for lots of children in car seats.
I like all the storage the vehicle has and that I can rearrange the setup in the back of the van. I like the side sensors on the mirrors. I dislike where the light dial is on the side.

Very roomy and easy to use van. The seats that go into the floor are very useful.
The Chrysler pacifica is very comfortable and easy to drive. We love the stow and go seating and how much room the van has. You basically cannot make the battery die, if kids leave the a light on or a door open the car eventually turns off so the battery does not die. We also really like the back up camera and side mirror warning arrows.

It the ultimate mom car, with as much space for everything you need.
I like all the room and extra storage space. I like that you can move seats with car seats in them. I do not like that it does not have a DVD player.

It is roomy enough for the entire family and it is very easy to drive.
I have the newly designed Chrysler Pacifica. It is a very nice van that is very roomy and spacious. I do not like that it does not have a cd player but the car drives well and I have had no issues yet.

We are officially minivan converts!
We love the space that we have now versus in our old SUV. The bells and whistles are a super nice perk. Our daughter loves the screens in the 2nd row and the DVD player. It has made such a difference on road trip, and the drive is much more pleasant. The van handles well and gets decent gas mileage.

Seriously comfortable, with 13 places to put your coffee.
This is the nicest car I have ever owned. It is incredibly comfortable and has a ton of convenience and entertainment features. The kids love the TVs with interactive touchscreens, and I love the 13 cup holders and that the seats are easily folded down. I also live the “trap doors” below the stow-n-go seating. I hide all sorts of things in there.

Powerful, comfortable pacifica.
The ride is comfortable and seats are made to fit the body. The screen is large and easy to view. All the applications are at your fingertip. This has the stow and go feature. It makes it so easy to put the seats down. I transport dogs and cats and there is plenty of room.

Smooth and comfortable ride.
No major problems. Love how smooth my van rides and that I can have up to 6 passengers seated comfortably. On my van, I thought it was strange how the engine shuts down when you come to a complete stop, but found out it was an option on the vehicle. It actually stopped working on mine, which is fine because I didn't really care for it.

The good and the bad of the Pacifica
Excellent car. Included shades to block the sunlight on the windows. Screen came broken and randomly turns off while we are using it.

I love the size of my vehicle. I like that it drives just like a car. I do not like that it has a problem and every time that I take it to the dealer they claim that they cannot find the reason for it.
I can carry all of my children and their things to and from school and practices with ease!
