2008 Chrysler Sebring Review: Neither the Best, nor the Best for the Price, but the Best in its Niche

Gilbert Smith
May 10, 2023

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring is really the go-to if you’re looking for a used convertible at a budget price. There are better cars, and better cars for the price, but the Sebring is the best convertible you’re going to find for under $6,000.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
An affordable and low-maintenance convertible with an excellent sound system.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The interior is cramped and cheap-feeling, and the Sebring lacks pep for a compact.

Is the 2008 Chrysler Sebring a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – If you’re willing to overlook a lot of shortcomings, the Sebring is a lot of fun to drive with the top down, the wind in your hair, and the tunes blaring.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – The interior is cramped and cheap-feeling, trunk space is almost non-existent, but you can add a point for the excellent sound system and choice of convertible tops.
  • Reliability 7/10 – Major breakdowns are few and far between, but you should probably start shopping around for a new vehicle as your Sebring’s odometer nears 200,000.
  • Safety 7/10 – Crash test ratings are good and anti-lock brakes come standard, but a convertible is just one step above a motorcycle when it comes to safety.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – The i4 engine delivers a solid 21/30 miles to the gallon, but the V6 engines struggle to make 22 MPG combined.
  • Value 8/10 – There are better deals to be had on the used car market, but not on a convertible.

An interesting detail is that it is a convertible.
My Sebring really has had no major problems. I keep up on its maintenance and has been very reliable to date. The drive is very comfortable and smooth riding. It features a stereo system that I like and has others that I do not use. Overall I really like my Chrysler.

The drive, the ride and the comfort.
It is comfortable to drive and ride. We bought it used a year ago and the most problem has been with the electric windows. It is a convertible and that seems to be part of the problem.
accountCircle Jordan M
It has good fuel mileage and wear and tear is not as common as newer model cars.
I have a 2008 Chrysler sebring it is a very comfortable car with bucket seats and electric seat warmers. The only thing that can be done to get the best satisfaction would be changing the coolant system. The water pump is mopar and the parts are durable but overheats and cause the heater core to burn out. But despite the coolant system the car has an awesome 2.3l engine. Very smooth.

My vehicle is red and is a decent size. It has 4 doors. The inside is very spacious. And an interesting detail is that it has seat warmers.
My care runs very well and I haven't had any issues with it since we got it fixed up. I bought it used so I had to do some updating on a few of the parts but now it performs great and is very reliable and comfortable.

Chrysler sebring for trade or for keeps.
My Chrysler sebring is a very dependable car. I bought it pre owned about 2 years ago. I have had to replace several new parts on it. Right now, it is not drivable, due to overheating. My air conditioner is not working and the fans are not coming on. I have almost got it paid down to where I can trade it in. I cannot decide whether to keep it, or trade. I love my Chrysler, but not all the problems with it.
accountCircle Sandra W
Very heavy doors and you sit low.
The only problem I have had is water leaking in on a bad rainy day through roof. Car runs great. Drivers seat belt seems to have been made much shorter than passenger side. Drives well in winter. I like that the doors are heavy. It gives you a sense of safety.
accountCircle Abel L
It is makes a knocking sound when you turn on and off the ac. Speakers and dope.
I love my car. It has a few dings on it. But it drives good. It needs new tires and an oil change and new breaks.

Others should know that the Resale value is terrible
What I like about my vehicle is the exterior blue color and the interior grey color. That is it. Everything else I dislike. I dislike the look of it, I dislike that after 8-10 yrs it started falling apart fast.

When the top is up, there is plenty of room in the trunk.
My car has paint that is bubbling and coming off of it. The car does run good though. The backseat really does not enough room for the passengers, since my car is a convertible.

I'm finding out they are awful to repair. My model has people on the internet with the same problems and going crazy trying to figure it out.
For the last year my car shuts off on its own. Chrysler mechanics can't figure it out. Chrysler headquarters can't help me because the car is 10 yrs old. I'm going broke. Not happy with chrysler.

It is a relatively smooth ride and has a powerful engine.
It is powerful and a relatively smooth ride. It is completely paid for. The electronic system is unreliable. It has too many bells that act as warnings and more than half the time they are inaccurate.

It doesn't have a digital clock. Has a lot of space in the truck and back seat.
Car is in the shop every 3 months. Always replacing the rotors and brakes. Also the coils and spark plugs. Ace is out of the car and multiple things in the car don't work either. Like the radio goes in and out. The motor in the windows goes out sometimes too. Water collects in the doors. The gas cap is also broken and sometimes won't lock either.

What Do Critics Say About the 2008 Chrysler Sebring?

Consumer Reports found the 2008 Chrysler Sebring to be an improvement over earlier models, but “still a big disappointment.” They liked the taller build and intuitive layout, but considered the base engine unrefined and noisy, and they were unimpressed by the car’s 20 MPG combined fuel economy.

Kelley Blue Book recommended the 2008 Chrysler Sebring as one of the more affordable convertibles on the market, and they liked the available sound systems. They weren’t so impressed by the tight, cheap-feeling interior, and they note that the car isn’t incredibly sporty compared to something like a Pontiac G6.

Edmunds liked the Sebring’s long list o standard features, they liked the choice of fabric or all-season convertible tops, and the hard-drive based audio and nav system. They found the base engine underpowered, the V6 inefficient, the brakes weak, and interior trim materials cheap.

What Common Problems Does the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Have?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has 343 complaints on file for the 2008 Chrysler Sebring. Around one in three of these are for electrical issues, with drivers reporting loss of power and stalling when in motion. A recall was issued in 2008, but complaints persist into 2021.

A number of structural complaints point to issues with the door locking mechanism. This is usually the result of a door latch cable coming loose from the handle, an issue that was recalled in 2007.

Airbag lights may come on as a result of a faulty track position sensor in the airbag’s occupant sensor system. A small recall was issued in 2007 for faulty occupant sensors, but complaints have been registered as late as 2022.

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring has been recalled just 4 times, which is on the lower end of the median for a vehicle this old.

How Long Will the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Last?

A well-maintained Chrysler Sebring should last at least 200,000 miles. Some drivers have reported hitting a quarter million miles and beyond in their Sebrings, but you have to account for the previous owner’s maintenance and driving habits.

Repairpal estimate that a 2008 Chrysler Sebring should cost around $404 in annual maintenance, which isn’t bad for this size class. The most expensive common repairs include new radiator hoses starting at around $294, and suspension control arm bushings at $257.

accountCircle Shel G

There is a blind spot when the top is up that can be concerning. Otherwise, I would say it is a very good car.

accountCircle Selena S

No, most reliable car ever. Never had no issues. Easy mechanical fixes. Easy manual. No hard issues or problems that couldn't be resolved.

accountCircle Tyler S

Again, mine has been reliable because I take good care of it. However, in general, they are not known to be reliable cars.

accountCircle Harris M

It has no problems that I did not create for it myself. The brake pads need to be replaced but that is because I drove it into the ground.

accountCircle Yvonne P

So far it is very reliable for me I don't have any problems and hopefully I won't because I need this car to last me a while

accountCircle Shannon M

My particular one has not had major issues yet. However, statistically, they are known to have many issues.

accountCircle Amanda M

In my experience my 2008 Chrysler has been very reliable. It rarely has any problems and has never broken down or stalled out on me

accountCircle Lucinda M

It is reliable and yes it has problems here and there but what car doesn't it just u have to be able to maintain your car properly

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2008 Sebring is excellent. Standard equipment includes a CD/MP3 player with 4 speakers and a hard-drive storage system for your media, and you can upgrade this to a 6-speaker system with a DVD player. Not bad at all for 2008.

Safety technology is good for the model year. Anti-lock brakes come standard, and traction control is available.

Is the 2008 Chrysler Sebring a Good Value?

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring is a pretty good value. A Limited sedan typically sells at just $4,654 or thereabouts, while a Touring convertible usually goes for around $5,632.

There are better cars to be had at these prices. The Sebring’s interior feels cheap and it’s not very sporty. But, while a Sebring might not be the most practical option, it may be the best convertible you’ll find in this price range, and the sound system really is as good as it gets for 2008.

What are the Different Models of the 2008 Chrysler Sebring?

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring is available in two body styles, being convertible or sedan, and three trim levels, from the base LX to the high-end Limited.

In the entry-level LX you’re getting:

  • Cloth seating
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Manual air conditioning
  • CD/MP3 player

The mid-range Touring model adds:

  • Premium cloth seating
  • 6-way power adjust driver seat
  • DVD player and 6-disc CD changer
  • Heated mirrors

With a top-of-the-line Limited you’re adding:

  • Leather seating
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Boston Acoustics 6-speaker sound system

What Engines Come In the 2008 Chrysler Sebring?

  • The 2008 Sebring comes standard with a 2.4L inline-four engine delivering 173 horsepower and 166 lb.-ft. of torque at an average fuel economy of 21/30 miles to the gallon, city/highway. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission in front wheel drive.
  • A 2.7L V6 is available, delivering 186 horsepower and 192 lb.-ft. of torque at an average 19/27 miles to the gallon. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic in front wheel drive.
  • At the top of the line you’ve got a 3.5L V6 delivering 235 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque at an average fuel economy of 16/26 miles to the gallon. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic in front wheel drive, or all wheel drive in a Limited edition.

What Colors Does the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2008 Chrysler Sebring?

The Sebring is passably comfortable. It’s a bit on the smaller side, with seating stretching just 53 inches across and limited leg and head room in the hardtop. The interior trim feels pretty cheap, as well. But the suspension has held up well over the years, and seating is nice and firm.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Have?

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring offers just over 6 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk, or 13 cubic feet storage space with the back seats folded down. Even by compact car standards, this is pretty skimpy. You could pack four medium suitcases for an airport trip, but the Sebring is not much of a pack mule.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2008 was the second model year in the Sebring’s 3rd Generation. The nameplate would be retired for good with the 2010 model just a couple years later.

2005: Auto on/off headlights and automatic air conditioning were new to the Limited edition for 2005.

2006: There were no big changes for 2006.

2007: Chrysler redesigned the Sebring from the ground up for 2008. The car is now larger at the wheelbase with a more spacious interior.

2008: The Limited was offered in all-wheel drive for 2008.

2009: New color options were the only big change for 2009.

How Does the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Compare to the Competition?

A 2008 Kia Spectra is more fuel efficient, and it costs about the same as a Sebring, but it’s not available in a convertible.

The 2008 BMW 3-Series is available as a convertible, but when you add in specialty repair fees, it’s going to cost you twice as much as a Sebring.

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring is neither the best compact car released in its model year, nor is it the best for the price. But it is the best in its unique niche, being a budget-priced convertible with an excellent sound system.

Do Owners Recommend the 2008 Chrysler Sebring?

Yes, it is very reliable. There are some minor issues and the car is creaky. Also since it is a 2008 it is getting up there in miles. Overall, it is a good car.

Low end luxury car with hard convertible top, and many extras'
The Chrysler Sebring Touring Convertible has an impressive list of features, including heated seats, premium audio system, CD changer, satellite radio, 18 inch alloy wheels, and much more. Some components on the inside have a cheap appearance. There is a lot of plastic. Also, the 2.7L V6 is known to have major issues. However, it has ran really well for me after 10 years. Overall, I am happy.

Chrysler Sebring - amazing car with amazing gas mileage!
I have had my Chrysler Sebring for 6 years and absolutely love it! Of course I had the usual car problems (alternator, battery, spark plugs, starter, etc) but never had any major problems. I am almost at 200,000 miles and the car still runs perfect! My Sebring is great on gas mileage as well. Inside was the part that caught my eye to buy. Comes with touch screen deck, DVD player, mp3 and the option to have Sirius radio. Trunk space is amazing and the back seat was pretty spacious as well. My Sebring was definitely one of my top favorite cars I have owned!

I've had very good luck with my Chrysler Sebring. It gets good gas mileage. It is a smooth ride. I get a lot of compliments on it and the way it looks. I've driven it down south a couple of times and the gas mileage was awesome. 2007-2008 Chrysler Sebring comparison. This car delivers speed.
I like my car for a few reasons. The drive smooth at certain rates of speed it tends to feel like you are floating. Besides that it is very spacious with ample leg room in the front and back of the vehicle. It is roomy and it sits up from the ground so it gives you the feeling of riding in a truck. What I do not like about my car is the hub system, wheel bearing etc.. They do not seem to be strong enough to hold the weight of the car. This is something that I am going to need to replace due to the rattling I hear. This is my second Chrysler Sebring except this one is a 2 door drop top and my first Sebring was a four door hardtop and it was a 2007 which I basically replaced the brake and hub system in that one also. One thing that I found odd was that I didn't get the electric windows and heated seats in the 2008 Chrysler but they are in the 2008 Chrysler. Overall it is a very nice car.

It gets me from point A to point B.
It is just older. I love the features on my car good gas mileage, comfortable. It has a decent sound system and enough room for my family.

An interesting detail is that it is a convertible.
My Sebring really has had no major problems. I keep up on its maintenance and has been very reliable to date. The drive is very comfortable and smooth riding. It features a stereo system that I like and has others that I do not use. Overall I really like my Chrysler.

The car, a Chrysler Sebring, is a great vehicle for a small family. It has held up through the rough weather that it has been exposed to.
Overall it is a good vehicle. I have used it to travel all over the state with no major issues. I am interested in the next vehicle being a similar model.

Great car in general! Just a couple minor issues
This car drives very smoothly. It is reliable and gives you alerts when it needs maintenance. It is very sturdy and durable as well. The inside is nice and comfortable. There are leather heated seats which is optimal for winter time. The seats are also electric powered. It is not a slow car but is very good on gas mileage as well. The only problem I have had with this car is that the ac drain gets clogged quite frequently and so the condensation of the ac leaks in the passenger side which creates a puddle. So this is easy to fix but creates an unpleasant smell and inconvenience

I love the little clock in middle of dashboard, very spacious for car seat
I love my 2008 sebring because it is my first vehicle I have purchased. Gas saver I drive far most of the time so gets me to the place I need to be, the only problem is that the ac just went out and I need to replace the compressor just don't know how to and the part is expensive and don't have money to fix it and I have a baby so I need to fix it soon

It's great on gas and when its running it has been reliable.
My vehicle is a 2008 Chrysler Sebring and I have only owned it for about 5 months. When I bought it I loved it! Then found out that their is a lot of electrical problems and a week ago after shopping for groceries I could not get it started so I had to contact a tow company and have it towed to a shop that its currently at now and we are waiting on the part it is a computer problem so with that being said it will be almost 2 weeks before I can get my car back. So that is what is going on with my vehicle.
