2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Review: A Redesigned Minivan Loaded With Problems

Alex Showalter
May 12, 2022

The 2008 Grand Caravan only lasts around 200,000 miles with computer and brake problems. At $4,408 – 5,826, it’s expensive for a van with high ownership costs.

likeFilled The Good
The cabin is quiet, the infotainment system is easy to use and there’s a lot of passenger room.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The seats are not very supportive, steering feel is loose and the base engine is weak.

Is the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Used Van?

  • No, 2008 is a bad year for the Grand Caravan. Owner reviews complain about maintenance issues, worn-out A/C systems, and broken sliding doors.
  • Reliability ratings are poor. Models from 20062007 are better choices, with a spike in problems for the 2008 model year.
  • Performance is poor form the base engine, but the largest motor offers good power for a van.
  • The Grand Caravan is a very safe minivan, getting a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is okay, at up to 19 MPG combined.

It's very roomy, cost effective and will never leave you stranded
Since I purchased the vehicle I have loved it. It has never left me on the side of the road. It's very roomy and can transport my family where ever we decide to go.

I love the In floor Seat Storage
I bought my car used but we haven't had any out of the ordinary issues with our van. I love the floor storage seats and countless cupholders! It is so easy to fall in love with this car. It helps me haul things around. I can take all of my family in one vehicle. I can also use it for the occasional camping trip. The only thing I wish it had was a tail hitch.

It was a great vehicle while my kids were young and I needed to tote them to soccer and other events.
We bought our 2008 Grand Caravan used in 2009 and it had been owned by a person who had become a missionary. It has been a great van with very little problems.

Cheap reliable and a smooth ride.
Great handling and reliability. Lots of space and cargo area. The DVD players are great for the kids.

Capabilities and flexibility of uses as both a passenger and cargo hauler.
Spacious and comfortable especially for long trips. With seats down, can load a lot of boxes or luggage, etc. A very practical utility vehicle for hauling, as well as a well featured passenger van. Out of all the minivans on the market, this has the largest cargo space and flexible seat configurations.

Big bertha: my awesome red minivan.
Runs very smooth. Lots of storage space and compartments underneath. Very advanced technology I feel like for the year it was made. Would recommend.

It has hit 10 years old and 100,000 miles and is still going strong.
We are a family of six and can all fit comfortably. I like the storage compartments in the floor. The rear fold down seat is convenient for when we purchase large items. Mechanically, we have had very little problems.

Comfortable and good parts quality
The gran caravan has a big gas tank, is not economical if you travel local or long distance. The car is heavy and does not run like a compact car, but is very comfortable for traveling, spacious, you can fit 8 people inside and put luggage on the ceiling.

Don't buy dodge shoddy parts and wiring
Terrible for mileage over $20,000 in parts since bought faulty wiring doors freeze shut in winter and while open constantly putting news brake pads on and rotors every 3 months has had a oil leak for years that never seems to get fixed at the dealership very disappointed in dodge caravan will never buy a dodge again

DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL VAN
Its Awful. AC has quit working several times, Door switch quit, numerous dash lights on, seals on doors are sub-par. Worst van I have ever owned.
accountCircle Savanna M
Buyer beware. If not maintained, will cost more than it is worth.
If you have a large family and do not live in the mountains this car probably would be perfect. However if it is not maintained it ends up becoming a money pit. There's a table, DVD player and automatic doors which is convenient. The seats also fold up nice too.

Be prepared to spend a lot of money on maintenance.
I do not like the consistency of the car having problems. I do like the features within the car. The braking system on this car is terrible.

Takes a licken and keeps on ticking.
This vehicle is dependable and can really take a beating. My family of seven sits comfortably in it. The tire inflate light won't turn off, but the tires are fine. It has a few dents in the doors from teenagers borrowing the vehicle. It gets around 22 miles per gallon. Has had $4000 worth of engine repairs in the last three months. Issues with the alternator and axles.

The car has a bit of age and of course related problems. Easy to drive but will overheat in hot weather.

Its ok for a used car I guess.
I love that it has back row screens but it's falling apart. We got it used so I guess that's to be expected.

What Do Critics Say About the Grand Caravan?

  • Consumer Reports says the Grand Caravan is worse than its rivals, and has low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Grand Caravan a 3.5/5 liking the quiet cabin, but disliking the poor handling.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Grand Caravan 3.8/5 and enjoy the smooth suspension, but do not like the high maintenance costs.

What Common Problems Does the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Have?

Many of the problems with the 2008 Grand Caravan are expensive, including computer failures, premature brake wear, and worn-out air conditioning.

Computer failures with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) are extremely common, showing up at around 100,000 miles. The TIPM is a weak spot across many Dodge and Chrysler vehicles from this era, and costs around $1,200 to replace.

Premature brake wear is another frequent complaint from owners, happening every 30,000 miles. The pads and rotors wear out quickly and a new set of pads is around $250, and rotors are an additional $400.

Air conditioning system failures happen on a lot of vans at around 60,000 miles. A compressor failure is the source of the problem, costing around $1,400 to replace.

There are 8 recalls, with the most serious being for the rear brake lines which can leak, and the rear axle which could fracture and cause a crash.

How Long Will the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Last?

A well-maintained 2008 Grand Caravan will last around 200,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles shorter than the Toyota Sienna. Regular annual maintenance costs are high, according to Repair Pal, at $554 per year.

Most Grand Caravans will have over 100,000 miles so prospective buyers should be prepared to replace the thermostat for $400, the alternator costing $650, and the window regulator which costs $325.

Yes it is very reliable. . We have had a couple issues with it but it has over 200k miles on it so that is to be expected.

accountCircle Gemika H

It has had a few issues. We replaced the entire ac system but has not had any major issues since purchased in may. Has had some minor issues the last few weeks.

accountCircle Genene F

It is reliable but not for an everyday transportation. Once parts start dying other problems happen. If you can afford gets full diagnosis and get things fix.

accountCircle Brian H

My vehicle has not shown any serious problems. Regular maintenance and responsible driving proves this vehicle to be very reliable.

accountCircle Kate K

It has many problems, needs brakes, replaced the water pump, radiator, head gasket. Hit 2 deer with it so it needs a front bumper guard.

accountCircle Lindsey S

Yes it is reliable... knock on wood no problems just ordinary wear and tear, just had oil changed, brakes done

accountCircle Becky B

Yes it is reliable. Little to no issues thus far. I would recommend it. Gets us to and from all of our appointments for my special needs child.

accountCircle Nicole C

SO reliable! We have had our van for 6 months, bought used, and currently has 130k miles on it. Normal wear and tear and nothing is expensive to replace when needed like brakes, tires, etc..

How Much Is the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Worth?

Blue book values range from $4,408 – 5,826, making the Grand Caravan a few hundred dollars cheaper than a Kia Sedona or Chrysler Town & Country. When new, the price range was $21,740 to $27,730. Depreciation is average, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Grand Caravan?

There are two models of the Grand Caravan available. Technology was just updated for the 2008 model year, with the next major update for the infotainment system coming in 2011.

SE is the entry-level model with:

  • 16-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Power Windows & locks
  • Keyless Entry
  • 4-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo System

SXT is a step up adding features such as:

  • 16-Inch Aluminum Wheels
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • Power Sliding Rear Doors
  • 6-Speaker Stereo System
  • Optional MyGig Touchscreen Infotainment System With 9 Speakers

What Engines Come In the Grand Caravan?

  • The base engine is the relatively weak 3.3L V6 which has 175 horsepower and gets up to 19 MPG combined.
  • A step up is the more responsive 3.8L V6 with 197 horsepower, which gets up to 18 MPG combined.
  • The flagship motor is the powerful 4.0L V6 making 251 horsepower and getting up to 18 MPG combined. Performance is good for a van, taking 8 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Grand Caravan Come In?

How Big Is the Grand Caravan?

The Dodge Grand Caravan is an average sized minivan similar to the Honda Odyssey and Nissan Quest. Passenger space is outstanding throughout the van with room for tall adults in all three rows.

Cargo space is excellent and larger than many SUVs, offering 32.3 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 82.6 behind the second, and up to 143.8 with all seats folded flat. The Stow ‘n Go seating is very easy to fold flat into the floor as well.

How Does the Grand Caravan Compare to the Competition?

The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular competitor that is around $1,500 cheaper. Interior materials are better in the Pacifica, but the Grand Caravan offers more room. We recommend the Pacifica for the 2008 model since there are fewer complaints.

The Toyota Sienna is another rival, which costs about $2,000 more. Reliability ratings and technology are better in the Sienna, but the folding seats are easier to use in the Grand Caravan. We recommend the Toyota Sienna since it’s one of the longest lasting vans.

This vehicle that is good for a short period of time. Once things start going out many problems started to happen. When it comes to gas, it was ok with city and freeway mileage. Great room for a family of 5 or more. Easy to clean but hard in the small parts. Need to buy tools to get in-between small spots.

Worst car purchase ever
Faulty wiring since the beginning, constant need to replace breaks (about every 2k-3k miles). We've had to replace every window's motor and sometimes the glass if it shatters when the motor fails. The Motorized third seat was permanently stuck in the down position, so we had to get a new third seat from a salvage yard. Often the battery will drain for no reason. Additionally, the ignition doesn't always work. Very unreliable. One time I was stranded in the cold and dark on a mountain with all of our camping gear and four young children loaded in the van, and my husband wasn't with us to help. Strangers helped jump start the car. The Chrysler dealership in Temecula has been utterly useless. Despite the constant problems, they gaslight us and tell us these are not known issues with the car, but of course, they are. We bought it used with 11k miles on it. It had these issues since the start. It now has only 130k miles on. I will NEVER buy a Dodge or Chrysler again.

It is very reliable, very few repairs.
The worst problem I've had with my SXT Dodge caravan 2008 is the anti-lock brake sensor went out in my steering wheel and it every time you go to turn the anti-lock brakes would come on I drove it for quite a while that way and now it's fixed, i it was around $500. It now has all, new rotors and brakes and tires and front axle on the right side and it still looks beautiful. I've had it 6 years, just this year had to put $ for major repairs. Still looks beautiful & I love the sto n go seats. Paid for .. 20 ish MPH. Gets better milage with cruse vontrol on. I livedmy red Van..

I love all the space it provides. I use it as a truck. I love the gliding doors however I wish there was a button to automatically open the back hatch. It drives smooth and I haven't had to do any additional work to it other than maintenance. The air conditioner works good in this heat

Great car for years time for an upgrade
The cab has frozen well for years. It's falling apart, now though. The parking brake is shot and can't be replaced, because the part is obsolete. It burns through headlights. Overall, it's been a great ride for the past 5 years. The stow-and-go feature is my favorite part.

It's very versatile. It's nice when you can put all the seats and back up or down as needed. It was very affordable. It has a few shakes and rattles, mostly due to its age. But still handles well. I would recommend this vehicle for anyone looking for something on these lines.

Dodge grand caravan: plenty of convenience, power, and ease of handling.
The Dodge grand caravan has been an excellent vehicle for someone who must drive frequently for work. The passenger area is roomy, though the third row seats are a little cramped. The stow and go seats are great when you need to haul cargo, and are easy to operate. The van handles well. I have driven in many different terrains from mountains to desert without any problems. The v-6 engine gives it plenty of power without using too much gas.
accountCircle Theresa L on March 2, 2021
Dodge Grand Caravan real review from a mom.
I love the design and 'tougher' look of the van. It is not the traditional 'mom' van. There are lots of cup holders, storage and features. The back row does not have a lot of legroom but it's ok for children. It drives great. The front and rear air is excellent. I love that both side rear doors and the back gate open with the key and from the driver's seat. The rear seats fold down into the floor to make lots of cargo room. There is storage under the floor between the front and second seats and I love that it keeps things organized and is easy to get to. There are a few issues we have with our van. The side doors make a really annoying squeaky noise when driving down the road. It does not affect anything but our nerves. There is also a popping sound from the front driver side that we can't seem to solve but it only does it when driving slow and turning the wheel. Sometimes the passenger doors take a few times to get them to close but I still love the van. The power windows in the side doors are really awesome especially with my children when we are sightseeing or just enjoying fresh air. Overall it's a great vehicle.

The good and bad of the grand caravan.
My grand caravan has plenty of space for all of my flea market inventory or for 7 passengers if I am taking my family places. It also has storage under the floorboards in the middle section. There has been one recall on the ignition system and have had to replace blinker bulbs twice in the back and the top brake light.

I think other should know that my Dodge caravan is very dependable.
The Dodge caravan takes up and uses to much gas per week. Another issue would be the radio/time display, I'm not a fan of the design and the overall design scheme. The say goes for the heating/cooling system design scheme. There is not an option to totally disable the system, so there is always wind blowing a all times. Despite all this the Dodge caravan is a very comfortable car to both drive as well as be a passenger in.
accountCircle Enrique C on February 21, 2021
My experience with my Dodge minivan.
I bought this vehicle used a couple of years ago. It had close to 180, 000 miles on it. Since then we've put about another 40, 000 miles on it ourselves. I have yet to have any problems with it. We maintain the oil changes on the regular as well as the air filter. Occasionally, we'll put fuel additives, but other then that, it has been maintenance free. It is been a smooth ride since we got it!
accountCircle Brandon D on February 10, 2021

Pros and Cons of 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan
Had to have the computer module replaced 3 times in 1 year. I wish the curve of the dashboard was lower down, as I am only five foot three inches tall so it is sometimes hard to see when going up a steep hill. Nice size and good for family with young kids. I like the stow and go for when we need to move large objects. The VES system is nice for road trips with the kids. I love that everything is automatic and especially that the gas pedal can be raised or lowered, so in my case I can raise it up.

My car is very good. No problems. It is a 2008 grand caravan. Very close comfortable, it is a 8 seater carries a small table for comfort. It has a DVD player for the comfort of the kids in long trips. Carries a lot of stuff very convenient to transport big things. I love my car. You will love it too. It's very good on gas.

Forever dependable and comfortable.
I love the comfort of my Dodge caravan, it not only rides smoothly on the highway, it also absorbs those nasty pot holes more that slot of vehicles. I can get in this car and it starts right up with no worries of being stranded. I love the caravans performance and reliability.
