2020 Ford EcoSport Review: Unreliable Subcompact SUV With High Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Nov 14, 2023

The 2020 Ford EcoSport lasts around 125,000 miles, with serious oil pump and engine sensor issues reported. At $14,450 to $21,499, it’s cheaper than most other small SUVs, but not worth the money since it will cost thousands of dollars to repair and keep it running.

The steering is responsive for an SUV, the upgraded stereo system is easy to use and the optional all-wheel drive system works well in the snow.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The standard safety features are outdated, the cabin has a lot of creaky plastic parts and the engines are not very powerful.

Is the 2020 Ford EcoSport a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2020 is a bad year for the Ford EcoSport since it has a lot of expensive mechanical problems. Owner reviews complain about brake problems, a choppy ride, and the cramped rear seats.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are cheaper than many other small SUVs, the seats offer reasonable support, cargo space is also good for its size.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are engine and transmission problems reported on the 2020 EcoSport. Models from 20182020 all have serious issues, while 20212022 have better reliability ratings.
  • Performance 6/10 – The standard three-cylinder engine is weaker than many other SUVs, and the four-cylinder is only average.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2020 EcoSport is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera, and optional upgrades include rear parking sensors along with blind spot monitoring.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 28 MPG, offering 386 miles of range from the 13.8 gallon tank. Gas costs are $24 cheaper than average at $194 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2020 Ford EcoSport is cheaper than many other small SUVs, but it has some problems which make it a bad value for shoppers looking for a used vehicle.

A detail about my car is that it is a beautiful blue color and it shines.
I have no problems with my vehicle yet. The car is very comfortable for me, it fits me perfect! The car definitely is not for everyone, it is small but very fun to drive! But this car is perfect for a first time car for a teenager, the car is very safe, lots of air bags, safety sensors and the best part is no texting and driving to keep your kids safe! I have had my car for about 4 months not and the performance is great, it drives smooth and takes curves wonderful! This car is not the car I wanted first but when I got into the car I immediately fell in love with it! I am so happy I choose this car! Also some of the features include a touch screen radio and backup camera, blind spot detection and it has more! If you decide to look at one of these cars you should definitely drive it you to just might fall in love too!

High tech urban crossover.
No issues. Performance and comfort better than expected. I am a big & tall male and the ecosport offers decent seating with good leg and head room. The 1.0 lt ecoboost motor with 6 speed automatic offers a smoother and more responsive acceleration than I would have expected.

2020 ford ecosport beauty and resourceful.
The ford ecosport is incredibly spacious for a 5-seater. I have black seats that hides stains. The 2020 ford ecosport also has apple CarPlay. The screen is a nice size to be able to toggle in between apps. I can read text messages when I am not driving also. The ford ecosport also has the auto stop/start feature. This feature is useful to conserve gas. It will turn your car off when you are at a red light or a stop for a long period of time and will restart once you lift off the brake or when the air/heat is no longer at the preset temp.

My lovely car that is so easy to drive and reliable with a lifetime warranty.
It's a great little car to drive. Easy to park in the city, great maneuverability, cute appearance and full of up to date gadgets. Parking assistance and cross traffic alerts, also side traffic alerts. Leather trim and heated seats. It also has a lifetime warranty and low insurance.

Great car for the family or a first time driver.
Ecosport drives great and smoothly. I goes into and energy saving mode that saves you money on gas. It is a very family safe car with all wheel drive and powered steering. Drives great in the snow and rain. Heated seats are a plus, great navigation, hands free calling, works with google assistant.

2020 ford ecosport with push start and moonroof.
I just got this car on January 2, 2020. So far I love it. I was previously driving a ford focus and I felt the car was too low to the ground. I got the ecosport to sit higher up. The only thing that is taking some getting used to is not having a key to start the car. I never had a push start car before and it still feels a lot different.

My car and all the features that it has. How much I enjoy it!
I love my car. I love all the features it has and how it's so good on gas. It has so many features like how many miles until you are empty of gas. I love the car apple play that plays everything on your apple through you car. It is very compact and drives very smooth. I am happy with my new car.

Best purchase!! Must get automobile!!
The best, the gas lasts for about 250 miles maybe more and I only spend like $20 to fill. Up the tank. It is small and compact and has great visibility. It also has autostop which turns the engine off in any stoplight or whenever the car comes to a stop and it saves your gas and shows that the car has great battery. It has heated seats which were great in the winter but they’re fabric so in the summer it is not as hot and does not burn my thighs.

Ford 2020 review. I am not clever enough for another title.
I am not a fan of the engine shut off feature. There is the option to turn it off but I do not always remember to do that. I wish there was a way to turn off the high beams from turning on. The crash assistance is somewhat annoying to me as well. Otherwise it has great gas mileage.

Ford ecosport, have small expectations for a small car.
Many things seem to be oddly places, such as the drink holder (it's super low down). The back seat also has 0 space for passengers legs. My nine-year-old son has barely enough room. The trunk door is pretty cool and the navigation system is very convenient.

Using oil already
Noticed not long after buying when I checked the oil level it seemed to be gradually lowering on the dip stick. At 4400 miles it was down to the add mark. My wife and I really like the EcoSport but a oil consumption issues will definitely put a damper on out enthusiasm for this car. I can't remember owning a car that consumed much in oil even with a lot of miles on it. Let alone a new vehicle with so little miles. This is the 2.0 liter Duratec which being non turbo was supposed to have less problems. Those tiny 3 Cylinder turbo's are the ones with problems? Well, maybe Ford just can't make a good engine?

First purchased a new 2016 Ecosport Trend fir my wife where height above ground and small size was important. With ability to easily accommodate groceries and suitcases its roomy enough to sleep in if you had to. Well learnt early that it has a •significant blind spot area with the front door pillars. •Road noise especially when back seats are down •Telephone/radio& cruise controls failed at 48000km •Clutch judder rom automatic gearbox Pleased with it still we purchased 2019 Ecosport Titanium and found we could accommodate 2 foldup exlectric bicycles and all our bags and gear to tour the South Island of NZ for a month. Now at 61000kms we still find: •Cruise control plays up occasionally •Newr model clutch judder present but improved •Road noise still an issue •The blind spot has caused an accident causing minor LH frontal damage. The sport mode hives better control in climbing hills and cornering while in town automatic is a good ckoice for the more docile driver. PS Both my wife and I are in 74th yr! What Do Critics Say About the Ford EcoSport?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Ford EcoSport offers more responsive steering than other small SUVs, but gets only average owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Ford EcoSport at 3.5/5, enjoying the great features in the Sync 3 stereo system, but doesn’t like the jittery ride on rough roads.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the EcoSport a 4.1/5, praising how easy it is to park in larger cities where parking spaces are small, but owners don’t like the tiny interior.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Ford EcoSport Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Ford EcoSport include low oil pressure, the engine stalling while driving, along with transmission failures. Overall, these problems are worse than other small SUVs, leading to more expensive repair costs as the EcoSport ages.

Low oil pressure is the most widespread complaint from 2020 EcoSport owners, showing up at around 20,000 miles. The oil pump is a known weak spot, which fails and causes damage to the engine. Replacing the oil pump costs around $950, but the lack of oil can cause permanent engine damage, which costs thousands to replace.

The engine stalling while driving and leaving owners stranded is another problem found on some EcoSport models at around 30,000 miles. There are a lot of sensors on the engine, which fail regularly.  Replacing sensors costs $100 to $600, depending on the part that failed.

Transmission failures are another problem found on some 2020 Ford EcoSport models within the first 40,000 miles. The transmission simply wears out, and has to be replaced. Changing out the transmission is an expensive project, costing over $3,500, depending on local labor rates.

There’s only one recall on the 2020 EcoSport, which is better than some other SUVs from the same year. The recall covers the air bag missing a booster. Ford will replace the air bag modules on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Ford EcoSport Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Ford EcoSport may be able to reach 125,000 miles before it becomes too expensive to maintain, which is much shorter than the long-lasting Toyota C-HR. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than average, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $560 per year.

As a used 2020 EcoSport reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the turbocharger tube for $200, mass airflow sensor costing $275, along with the fuel tank, which costs over $1,000.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is worse than other compact SUVs, and only includes a small 4.2-inch central display screen. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3 software, which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard safety features are basic, since it only has a rearview camera and Ford’s MyKey, which sets speed and volume limits for secondary drivers.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Rain sensing windshield wipers
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Blind Spot Monitoring

Is the 2020 Ford EcoSport a Good Value?

No, the 2020 Ford EcoSport is not a good value since it has some expensive mechanical problems that show up as they age. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $14,450 to $21,499, making it less than a Honda HR-V or Mazda CX-5. When new, the price was $19,995 to $27,715. Depreciation is similar to other small SUVs, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford EcoSport?

What Engines Come In the Ford EcoSport?

The 2020 Ford EcoSport offers two engine choices:

  • The base engine is a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder EcoBoost, which produces 123 horsepower. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and is primarily configured with front-wheel drive. In terms of performance, this engine can accelerate the EcoSport from 0-60 MPH in 11 seconds, while its combined fuel economy is rated at around 28 MPG.
  • For those seeking a bit more power, there’s the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 166 horsepower. This engine also comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission but is exclusively offered with all-wheel drive. When it comes to performance, it achieves a 0-60 MPH time slightly faster than the three-cylinder, clocking in at around 10.5 seconds, and it offers a combined fuel economy of 25 MPG.

What Colors Does the Ford EcoSport Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford EcoSport?

The 2020 Ford EcoSport, while compact in stature, aims to provide a level of comfort suitable for its class. The seats are cushioned, and most passengers will find them supportive for shorter journeys. The higher trims offer features such as leather upholstery and heated front seats, which enhance the overall comfort experience. However, given its compact dimensions, the cabin can feel somewhat tight, especially for taller occupants in the rear.

The ride quality is decent on smoother roads, but on rougher terrains or highways, occupants might feel some bumps and road imperfections. Noise insulation is adequate, though not best-in-class, with some road and wind noise permeating the cabin at higher speeds. In terms of technology, the infotainment system is user-friendly and the controls are within easy reach, adding to the convenience. Overall, while the 2020 EcoSport offers a reasonably comfortable environment for short to medium-length journeys, those looking for ample space and plushness might find it a bit lacking compared to some competitors in the segment.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford EcoSport Have?

The 2020 Ford EcoSport, a compact SUV, offers a decent amount of storage space considering its compact footprint. When it comes to rear cargo capacity, with the back seats in use, the EcoSport provides about 20.9 cubic feet of space. If you fold down the second-row seats, this expands to an impressive 50 cubic feet. To put this into perspective, this amount of space can comfortably accommodate several large suitcases, a week’s worth of groceries, or even larger items like a bicycle with the front wheel removed.

In addition to the main cargo area, the EcoSport boasts several smaller storage spaces throughout its interior. These include door pockets, a glovebox, cupholders, and various nooks and bins, which are perfect for holding smaller items like smartphones, wallets, or drinks. This blend of large cargo space and smaller storage solutions makes the 2020 EcoSport versatile for both daily commutes and longer road trips.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Ford EcoSport was launched for the 2018 model year, which is smaller than the popular Ford Escape.

2018: First model year for the Ford EcoSport, which features new styling, engines, and technology features.

2019: Additional standard features on all models.

2020: Standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot on all models, and an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen is standard on the SE model

2021: Power driver’s seat is now standard on SES and Titanium models, minor exterior styling changes.

2022: Standard all-wheel drive on all models, entry-level turbocharged engine removed.

How Does the Ford EcoSport Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Ford EcoSport is a bad small SUV since it has a lot of mechanical problems that show up as it ages, making it one that is expensive to own long-term.

The Ford Escape is a slightly larger SUV, which costs about $2,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Ford Escape, while the Ford EcoSport fits better in small parking spaces found in large cities. We recommend the Ford Escape since it has fewer complaints from owners for the 2020 model year.

The Kia Soul is a small hatchback, which is available for about $1,500 more. Interior materials and standard technology are both better in the Kia Soul, while the Ford EcoSport has higher ground clearance. We recommend the Kia Soul for shoppers since you get more features for your money.

Econobox SUV with some perks
It's has many nice features for a lower end SUV model. I got the 2.0 liter non turbo with AWD. Ford recommends premium for best performance which is a bummer for an entry level vehicle. Runs Ok on 87 octane I get 29 MPG typically. Negatives, the back seats have no space to fit adults. Short wheel base means choppy ride quality. Small gas tank and no spare tire. You get basically a inflator and sealant to fix a flat tire. Has a nice infotainment screen and climate controls all easy to use. Real buttons and switches a plus. I get 29 MPG typically a couple more if I use Premium gas. Transmission is awful it shifts to early and is slow to downshift. Does not take advantage of the engine performance curves. Really drives better in manual shift S mode. I am happy enough with mine, got a good discount so not complaining a lot. But I don't think Ford will sell a lot of these Ecosport's in the US.

Great Sub-Compact SUV
We have the 4WD/2.0L model. I wanted a small SUV and I'm happy with the EcoSport. The 2.0L is adequate but the 6sp.Auto needs tweeked, I keep mine in Sport mode all the time. The start/stop feature should be off until the driver turns it on and not the other way around. I'm getting 32-33 mpg on the highway (no a/c) and 24-26 city (no a/c). I hate that the doors have no manual door locks and you can't open the rear hatch if you have no battery. I only paid 17K for it out-the door (sticker was $22,835 + title & tax). The downside is it bottoms out when you hit a pothole or speedbump at faster speeds, all the electrical stuff you don't need or want (like the auto radiator shutters), the tailgate opens sideway instead of lifting

It is great. No real problems. I use it for short drives around the corner or long drives traveling to other states. The mileage is good. I am able to spend a good amount of money on gas and not run out too fast. I have no idea what else I should say. It is a brand new make and model. I love it.

From Chevy to ford and hoping for better luck.
We had engine problems twice on an equinox, and went without a car for 7 months. Just bought new car last week. Ford ecosport from interstate ford where some works. Hoping there’s better luck with ford. Not happy with Chevy at all. Didn't want to lease to us, no deals for covid.

I love it! It really is a good vehicle just needs a couple of adjustments.
The only problems I have is that when I am on the highway it takes a while to speed up. And also when the car does it auto shut off it takes too long to start back up. And there should be a bigger space between the back and the front of the car. But other than those problems I love it so much! Especially because we do not have children it is a perfect size.

The SUV all star special..O.
This car is completely awesome compared to my past vehicle. Slightly spacious and provides comfort for a family of 4. Cruise control allows your traveling to be utterly smooth (feels like you are floating in the air). Comes equipped with everything you'll want out of your future car.

The silver, sleek roller skates.
The 2020 ford ecosport is comfortable, reliable, sleek, and it has a reverse camera. It does not have a lot of legroom, and it's very small. It's also very easy to drive and see out of, it also has heated seats and remote start which comes in handy a lot.

Extremely smooth with great gas mileage.
It has been amazing so far, great gas mileage, very smooth driving, extremely quiet, definitely holds more and bigger than I originally thought, my kids and all of their friends love it. The outside is very smooth looking, I got the dark gray which is a beautiful color.

Small yet spacious, smooth drive, 10/10!
This car is super cute and small yet spacious for all needs. It has really awesome Bluetooth features and it drives really smooth. I love all the colors it has available and I feel safe driving in it. I especially like that it automatically locks if you close the door and the vehicle is still on. You can also turn on the vehicle, lock it, or unlock it from your phone! It comes in handy when the temperature drops before I leave for work. 10/10 would definitely recommend this vehicle.

The trunk opens sideways and the trunk release is hidden above the rail lights.
There is no trunk or gas button inside the car. The car drove very nice. Gas goes quickly. Overall its a very nice car but it comes with issues the seats are not powered by hand. The car is durable also lightweight so I recommend putting something heavy in the back like sand.

Ford ecosport pros and cons.
The car is kind of small for my needs but it gets me where I need to go. I drive a lot and the tank does not hold very much so frequently filling up gas tank. CarPlay is a helpful feature that I enjoy. Only wish you could do Bluetooth CarPlay. Sunroof is cool. I wish it had back air vents.

Great small vehicle for urban setting.
No problems, wish for more horsepower, but bought eco, I had chosen perfect vehicles with all of the extras and happy with it, however, not figured or read how to set the radio, will do when I have more time. Never had backup camera, great feature as well as heated seat and steering wheel.

Ford ecosport, have small expectations for a small car.
Many things seem to be oddly places, such as the drink holder (it's super low down). The back seat also has 0 space for passengers legs. My nine-year-old son has barely enough room. The trunk door is pretty cool and the navigation system is very convenient.
accountCircle Leslie W on October 18, 2020
Ecosport is a great car at a great price.
I have only had the car 10 days, but am happy with the way it handles. I got the 4wd but no snow yet to determine its abilities. Love the heated leather seats and steering wheel, as well as the sunroof. Wish it had presets for the seating like my escape did.

Ecosport.Has a backup camera.
Great performance low on gas easy to handle. So happy I chose this vehicle. Very safe nice interior inside. Nice outside so far haven't had any problem. I would tell anyone if they are looking for a vehicle that does not burn hardly any gas easy to handle it is ecosport. Lovely ride.Enjoy.

I love the height! Comparable to the ford fusion, it is what I prefer.
I wish I had a bigger size - not a design flaw just a personal preference. I was not the purchaser of the car, however, I informed the purchaser that I would enjoy a car with heated seats, a backup camera, and for it to be an SUV. I had previously driven the 2018 ford fusion se and enjoyed that vehicle as well. My next purchase from ford will most likely be the ford fusion because I enjoyed the fuel efficiency and ease of driving. I do enjoy the lifted aspect of the ford ecosport, so if there were a combination of the two, that would be ideal.

Wouldn't want any other car.
I went through Larry h miller and I love my new car. It is really good in snow and really helps with traction control. It has Bluetooth and heated seats. Gas mileage is a little low but all in all no problems. The one thing that I did wish it had is the side mirror sensors but it does have a rear view mirror. Also has Wi-Fi, which helps with these times.

Perfect fit for the wife and me.
I absolutely love this vehicle. It is the perfect size for my wife. It is a smaller SUV but she struggles with larger vehicles. It gets really good gas mileage and has more pick up and go than I thought it would. The only knock I have on it is the lack of cargo space and the backseat had little leg room but it is a perfect fit for my wife since the kids are grown.

My car and all the features that it has. How much I enjoy it!
I love my car. I love all the features it has and how it's so good on gas. It has so many features like how many miles until you are empty of gas. I love the car apple play that plays everything on your apple through you car. It is very compact and drives very smooth. I am happy with my new car.
accountCircle Bree B on August 25, 2020
The radio is a nice sized touch screen. It almost looks like a mounted tablet.
My car is very nice runs and drives very well. Has a large touch screen for radio with satellite, easy to see and pretty well set up with all apps and settings. Sunroof is a favorite feature on the car. Spacey front and back seats. There is however, little to no space in the trunk. Other than the small trunk though it is an amazing car.

10/10 comfort, cannot express how much I am in love with it.
I actually went into the car dealership having a dim idea of what I wanted in my new car, but the moment I stepped in and saw the ecosport, I fell in love. I love the smoothness of the ride, and the space it provides for not only my seat but all around the car and for other passengers as well. The comfort level is amazing and honesty during the summer the seat can get extremely hot and that is a could give it a ten out of ten except nothing is that bad and I love this car. I would totally recommend this car to anyone who has children and enjoys road trips.

New ford ecosport review.
It has a very small gas tank, I hate having to fill up all the time, the cargo space is small also, smaller than I expected. There is no spare tire and that is a concern. It looks sporty which I like, not a boring appearance. The model is a titanium which has a lot of great features. Heated seat, mirrors, steering wheel. Remote start!!

Love my ecosport! It is reliable and has good gas mileage.
I love how for a smaller SUV that it comes with all the bells and whistles. It drives great and has pretty good gas mileage. The trunk has a decent amount of space too. I have been driving an ecosport for awhile now and had one prior to getting my current one. They are reliable and great if you live in more of a city or suburban area.

Ford ecosport - a must see and drive to believe.
I had never heard of this model car until I visited the dealership. It seemingly had everything I was looking for - it was slide in, sit down high, it had a real gear shift on the floor, it had a backup camera, and many other features - the list is simply too long to list here. We took it for a nice long test drive, and bought it on the spot. Drive it once, and see for yourself what you think. I think you might buy it on the spot, too.
