2011 Ford Edge Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV Plagued With Engine Problems

Alex Showalter
Mar 23, 2022

The 2011 Edge lasts around 150,000 miles with lots of electrical and engine issues. At $9,374 – 12,633, it’s an SUV to avoid with higher ownership costs than rivals.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Interior materials are very high quality, the technology is better than rivals and the engines are powerful.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are a lot of serious problems, the transmission shifts roughly and the cabin is smaller than its rivals.

Is the 2011 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2011 is a bad year. Owners complain about stereo problems, worn-out brakes, and check engine lights.
  • Reliability ratings are poor. Avoid models from 2011 through 2013, and we recommend 2014 and newer models.
  • Performance is good from the two V6 engine options.
  • The Edge is a safe SUV getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests and a Top Safety Pick Award.
  • Fuel economy is okay at up to 21 MPG combined.

I like the look of the vehicle. I like the way in handles. I like the size of it. I dislike that it does not have GPS
The most important thing is that it is paid for and it runs smoothly.

Adaptive cruise control worth its weight in gold. Great vehicle driverless.
The package is one of their higher packages. The adaptive cruise control is worth its weight in gold and the built in navigation system has saved me on many occasions when I have either been lost or need to go somewhere unfamiliar. The voice could be louder as it is easy to miss a direction. It also does not have you the option to choose a different route if available, it just takes the shortest route. It has taken me to some wrong locations as well even though the correct address has been entered. I purchased aluminum wheels which caused problems with the routers and tire pressure. I live in snowy weather and the auto detection of the need for 4 wheel drive is slick. My previous vehicle was a pickup and I miss the ability to transport large items. The roof curves down making it difficult to completely enclose large items close the hatch. Until the battery became old, which has only been replaced once, there never was a problem with starting the vehicle. Gas mileage is about 20-24 mph. Great thing is it doesn't have a gas cap! No more lost or lose caps. No problems with emissions.

I like that it is reliable and is roomy.
Performance wise, my ford runs well. I like that it is family friendly and has plenty of space. No problems so far with its features. I like that it is very reliable and drives well. Ford parts are a bit pricey though. I wish that the parts were more affordable.

Ford Edge Gives Me Peace of Mind
I enjoy how spacious the Ford Edge is for passengers and cargo. It like the backup camera, Bluetooth, and stereo system. The leather seats are still in perfect condition after 8 years. I was in two auto accidents two years ago, then decided to purchase the Ford Edge. I feel safe while driving and not an anxious driver after the purchase.

It is a large vehicle that has a somewhat big blind spot.
The brakes work extremely well. The onboard Bluetooth makes it easier to listen to my music. The steering assist makes it move easily.

The additional features are the best!
I have been pleased with the safety features of my car. I have been in two wrecks and it survived and kept me safe beyond what I expected. Not only are the front seats comfortable, but the back seats are also comfortable. My car has special features like sync and electronic everything that makes it feel like a luxury car. My only complaint is the sunroof leaks.

Great vehicle to buy for a family.
I love my car, it has been a great vehicle. I have not had one problem with it ever since buying it. I love the leather interior, the backup camera, and I love the way it drives. I love that I have not had any problems with the engine whatsoever. It has been a really great vehicle so far.

Pros and Cons
I have owned my 2011 Ford edge limited for 7 months. Pros remote start, bluetooth, push start engine.Cons phone always disconnected from the bluetooth, Navigation system stopped working. Check engine light came on 6 months after I brought it and took it the dealership to see why it was jerking The dealership wasnt sure what the problem was they stated it's the o2 sensor and the fuel pump and claimed the vehicle needed 5000 worth of work . This vehicle needed all this work when I only owned it for 7 months. I am having trouble trading it . I will never buy a Ford vehicle again. The worst investment. All the people at two of the dealerships I went to have the worst customer service.

2011 white ford edge sel AWD.
The radio system constantly glitches. It'll reset itself all the time. The navigation system does not work on it anymore and ford will not fix it. The rain guards fell off almost instantly after I got it. Brakes are constantly needing replaced rather than every so often. Alignment does not stay straight. The only good quality thing about this vehicle is the height and leather interior.

Not impressed with the Ford Edge
I feel this vehicle has too many engine issues for the miles on it. I also feel that it's not that comfortable to drive and I have a hard time parking it due to the front sitting high. There are a few things I do like about the vehicle. I do like the look of this vehicle. Very sporty. I also like the backup camera feature. The navigation system has not been user friendly and we've had repairs on it and only because of extended warranty had it upgraded.
accountCircle Kendra C
The Ford Edge has a roomy interior for families, but service problems plague older models, buyer beware.
We've had multiple service-related problems with the car that come with expensive fixes like overhauling the brakes twice in 5 years. It's also not a very smooth ride, aren't enough cup holders, and the LX that we have doesn't have key memory settings for multiple drivers. Regardless, we're planning to buy an import car to replace it soon and will likely never buy a Ford again or even an American car at that.

It is comfortable for my family of 3
I like the size for my family-I dislike that there are no racks on the roof or a hitch. It also smells like gas and makes a loud noise when I drive

Ford edge is definitely not worth the debt.
The breaks are too hard & when one accelerates you’ll feel like you are dragging. We just got this car a year ago and it is already breaking down. Definitely wouldn't recommend it for anyone, especially if you are paying $20, 000+ for such vehicle. Might as well buy another vehicle.
accountCircle Monica H
When anything goes wrong with engine it's extremely expensive to fix.
I liked heated seats, the car is roomy, and had electronic dashboard. I disliked the head tests. And the water pump being an internal component of the engine making replacing very expensive.

Good and bad
Love the backup camera, heated seats, Sirius radio. Hate the door latch! Less than 3 years after new purchase, I went thru hell and high water to get the “door ajar” sensory fixed! Ford said the door latch was Not under warranty, even with my extended warranty and they wanted me to pay $800 to fix it, grrrrr! I called Ford and my warranty folks after I got NO help from my local dealer where it was purchased. Finally, Ford said they would fix the problem and I just had to pay the $100 deductible. They did NOT replace the door latch with a new part. They unstuck the latch and reinstalled the same one, grrrr! Now, I’m having the same identical issue and I purchased a brand new battery a month ago but my battery is being drained because of the crappy faulty door latch (driver door). My dealer wants $600 to fix the problem!! Grrrr! There was a lawsuit in process over the door latch for a recall but I think it was rejected/dismissed. Check online. Meanwhile, I’m stuck fighting with Ford again about their poor, inferior door latches! What are their engineers doing about this issue?? Because of the door latch issue, the interior lights stay on which drains the battery! I have needed several jump starts already——NOT a good thing! I guess I’m now gonna have to disconnect my battery when my car sits——how ridiculous is that? Until I get Ford to fix something THEIR engineers haven’t figured out yet!! The fact that the door latch was not included under the warranty tells me Ford KNEW it was a problem from the onset! Instead of doing the right thing for their customers and doing a recall or fixing all door latch issues, they are leaving their customers in the dark and making us pay big bucks to fix their engineers’ rotten design! Ugh!

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports finds the Edge falls short with poor driving dynamics and below-average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Edge 4/5, enjoying the quiet cabin, but the transmission shifts slowly.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Edge a 4.5/5 and like the stereo system, but finds the SUV to be overpriced.

What Common Problems Does the 2011 Ford Edge Have?

Problems with the Edge are relatively serious including electrical issues, check engine lights, and brake failures.

Electrical issues with the door ajar sensor are extremely widespread at around 80,000 miles. The light and chimes will stay on constantly when the sensor fails. Replacing the part costs about $400.

Check engine lights are another very common issue at around 57,000 miles. Usually there will be a loss of power followed by the light. The most frequent problem is a failed throttle body, and replacing it costs nearly $470.

Brake failures show up on a lot of vehicles at around 77,000 miles. The brake booster is a known weak spot and makes stopping very difficult when it fails. Replacing the booster costs around $1,000.

There are 3 recalls including a serious one for the body control module, which can cause a fire if the system has a short.

How Long Will the 2011 Ford Edge Last?

A properly cared for 2011 Ford Edge should last about 150,000 miles, which is over 100,000 miles shorter than top competitors including the Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are very expensive at $665 per year, according to Repair Pal.

After an Edge reaches 75,000 miles owners should prepare to replace the heater core for $1,100, A/C evaporator costing $1,200, and the steering column motor which costs $300.

For me, the ford edge is super reliable. I have had no problems at all with it. I have traveled safely from California to Colorado and vice versa several times in it with no issue.

accountCircle Narita R

It is very reliable! The only problem that I have experienced, especially with it being an used vehicle, the brakes needed to be replaced!

accountCircle Luis S

It is very reliable, we have never had problems with it. We have always properly maintained the vehicle.

accountCircle Landyn S

It is reliable and has not had a single problem. I have owned the vehicle for 5 years and it has never been in the shop other than regular oil changes and tire rotations.

accountCircle Norma B

Yes it is reliable. We have only had issues with the rearview camera. We had to replace the entire camera at a ford dealership.

accountCircle Raven V

I have had no problems one recall and they fixed it. Starts every time been in long distance trips no issues

How Much Is the 2011 Ford Edge Worth?

Blue book values range from $9,374 – 12,633, making the Edge cheaper than rivals including the Pilot and Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $27,640 to $38,775. Depreciation is similar to other SUVs losing 8% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford Edge?

The 2011 Edge comes in four main models. Technology is decent since the infotainment system was just updated for 2011, adding new SYNC software, with the next full redesign coming in 2015.

SE is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels

  • An upgraded, more powerful 3.7L V6 is found in the sport model with 305 horsepower which takes 7.1 seconds to go from 0-60 mph.

What Colors Does the Ford Edge Come In?

How Big Is the Ford Edge?

The 2011 Edge is a midsize SUV that is smaller than its rivals including the 4Runner and Pilot. Passenger room is good throughout the cabin with plenty of legroom in the backseats for adults.

Cargo space is smaller than a lot of rivals with only 32 cubic feet of room behind the back seats, and up to 69 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Ford Edge Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Highlander is one of the most popular midsize SUVs costing $3,000 more. Where the Highlander stands out is with more room, but the interior is better in the Edge. We recommend the Highlander since it is more reliable and affordable to own.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another competitor, which costs $2,500 more. The Grand Cherokee is much better off-road, but the Edge has a higher quality interior. Neither of the SUVs are perfect, but the Grand Cherokee will last longer and is a better choice.

Very Reliable
Our 2011 Edge Sport has been fantastic! It had 188,00 miles, zero problems from engine or transmission. Plenty of power from the 3.7 V6, It even has paddle shifters if you so desire to use them. Very comfortable to drive on long trips and the interior still looks NEW. Looks are stunning and a great stance. I change oil every 5K miles, full synthetic. I see bad reviews about electrical and brake issues that I haven't experienced, sure brakes need replaced, that's just needed maintenance. It would be a difficult vehicle to replace, and like as well as the Edge Sport. I'd like to see better gas mileage, but it is a big vehicle with 305HP, so it really isn't bad at all.

Best Ford Ever!!
I have a 2011 Ford Edge Sport with 272,000 miles on it. It drives like it'll give me another 100,000 miles. Hands down it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. I use full synthetic oil at oil changes. Other than brakes and tires this vehicle hasn't cost much in maintenance since I've owned it.

The ford edge has plenty of power, is roomy, comfortable and a good value.
The ford edge has plenty of head and leg room and is very comfortable. The 3,5 liter v6 engine has a lot of available power but the fuel economy does not suffer because of it. The vehicle has proven to be very reliable with no serious maintenance issues,

My vehicle is in the early stages of falling apart.
The 2011 ford edge, has been a reliable car. However I have driven it in into the ground these passed 7 years since owning it. Many trips over 350 miles one way. It was durable for some time but now at 150k miles it has started to lose its luster. It is a comfortable spacious vehicle with a lot of amenities such as the dual sunroof.

Awesome truck ford edge I love it.
It is a very comfortable SUV truck. I love it has lots of space. And it drives wonderfully. Great type of truck to have if you have a big family. I fit 3 people in the back and two up front. I would not dream of getting anything else. If you want something good and reliable the ford edge is the way to go.

Downsizing safely and comfortably.
I went from a larger vehicle to a 2011 ford edge. I really like it, it is very comfortable on long distance drives. I use studded tires in the winter and it handles really well. I was initially nervous about driving in a snowstorm but with the studded tires it was excellent. I really like the sunroof and leather seats. I live in Maine and mornings can be very cold, below zero, but with the automatic starting feature and the heated seats it is easiest to get into the car and go where I need to safely and comfortably.

Very reliable and comfortable car. Definitely gotten many years use out of it and still runs well. The features are suitable for my needs, nothing overly fancy. The car is getting lots of mileage but continues to run well. Very happy with this investment and would purchase a newer model of the car in the future.

The ford edge is a luxury meets utilitarian vehicle.
The problems I have with my ford edge are things like the amount of gas it uses, the visibility when backing up or even when looking through the side windows is pretty bad, repair costs are expensive, and the my ford touch screen in the front brakes after a while, needing to be replaced for a lot of money. The things I like about the car is the reliability to start, all wheel drive, very nice heated seats, solid build quality, very comfortable seats and very comfortable to drive even when going over potholes, the amount of storage space, and the amount of small features like ambient lighting and the ability to turn surround sound on.
accountCircle Rhonda M on May 21, 2021
Comfortable and affordable ride.
There is an issue with the door sensor. The door will be closed but the car sees it as open and the overhead light remains on and drains the battery. I love the stereo system. It is Bluetooth. Speakers are great. It has room 5 people and good trunk space. The engine comes on a lot.
accountCircle Nicholas M on May 21, 2021

I have never had any issues. The only repairs have been routine maintenance. It's the most comfortable and quiet vehicle I have owned. The touch screen feature is awesome. Hands free commands make it super easy to make calls while driving. The panoramic sunroof is great. Gas mileage is decent. The leather seats have held up well over the years.

It is reliable, it is a comfortable ride. It is got about 140000 miles on it and it stills runs really well. The touch screen is a bit old but it is still functional, you can connect your phone via Bluetooth and the GPS works well. My favorite feature is the mood lighting underneath the glove compartment,

Huge cargo room, spacious interior, solid driving - we love our ford edge!
We love the vehicle, no problems with the engine; unlike our previous car which was much older. The only major work done on the car was a transmission redo but it was covered under warranty and we didn't pay anything. The car runs well; a few things have started to wear on the inside; the center console pad is coming apart; buttons inside are scratched; scratches on body paint but otherwise a solid care. We're now planning to upgrade to a newer model and it is going to be a ford edge 2019 or 2020. The car fits all our needs with 4 of us. We enjoy the cargo space during vacations, spaciousness in the vehicle. It works for us.

5 stars for the 2011 ford edge sport.
I absolutely love my 2011 ford edge sport! I have owned it for almost 2 years now & I couldn't imagine finding something I love driving more! The seats are all powered, black leather & heated. It is very comfortable for everyone. The sound system is amazing & all features work just as they should with exception to the built-in navigation due to the vehicle's age & outdated system but I hope to have it updated soon. I have had absolutely no mechanical issues so far & am very happy about that & has proven to be very reliable thus far. The engine is plenty powerful enough for anybody, in my opinion, & runs perfectly! The only con to owning this vehicle I have had trouble with is the amount of storage space. It does have a glove box & center console but with a toddler, you can never have enough storage space for the driver & passenger. I tell my fiancee very often that if anything happens to my edge, I do not think I'll ever find a more beautiful, comfortable SUV that I love nearly as much as this one! Highly recommend! 5 stars from this mama!

It is a great overall vehicle.
The vehicle is very reliable. It rides really smooth and is great on gas mileage. The only problem I've had with the vehicle is with the my ford edge touch screen radio. Sometimes you can be driving down the road and it will just go out and you will have a blank screen and can't use the radio at all. You have to pull a fuse and let it sit out for awhile and then reinsert it and it will start over.

2011 ford edge nice and reliable thus far!
I have not had many issues with the 2011 ford edge limited. I bought it certified used from a car dealership in 2015. It had 100,000 miles on it. I loved the space for a smaller SUV. Around 130,000 it started hesitating when you lay down on the gas. Noticed that getting on the highway. Never took it in. Just stopped laying down on the gas like that. The bank up camera stopped as well. Overall, it has been a good reliable car.

There is not anything in particular that I do not like about the vehicle. It has been very reliable for my family. General maintenance is relatively inexpensive. The only issue that I have had with the vehicle is a problem with the transmission. Apparently there is a relay in the transmission that occasionally goes bad. It has only happened to us once, but I have read about others having the same issue numerous times.

The ltd version or no edge.
I love the heated leather seats. I do not like the climate control. It is either blows hot or cold - no in-between. I like the dash and features but the radio reception is poor. My back-up camera went out. That said, it drives well and the all wheel drive is helpful. The rear seats fold down and I can get a lot of stuff in the back.

Comfortable riding, and stylish design.
I really love this car. It is spacious and very comfortable for traveling. The trunk area is very big and can hold a lot. Gas mileage is great and the Bluetooth specs are amazing, very easy to set up and understand. The only think is the rear camera is upside down which is odd but still works. I feel very safe in it.

Features and pros of a 2011 ford edge.
Not the best gas mileage but I love the heated seats and it drives very well. Have only had to do one major repair. The back seat is roomy enough for the kids to ride comfortably when we travel. The radio has great features, like being able to save your favorite songs to it off of CDs. It has back up warnings and is capable of adding back up cameras.

My 2011 silver Ford escape
Runs great. Had original tires 85000 miles. Original brakes 90000 miles. Good in snow. Holds golf clubs and push cart or 4 bags.

A great vehicle, with a bit dated infotainment options.
Love the feel, a good solid vehicle that I think is safe and capable. The engine feels strong and powerful, Mileage is a little low, but not terrible at all. The only thing I do not love is that infotainment section (my ford touch) feels very dated already, and putting in addresses for GPS navigation is painful.

Brake system issues but performance is ok.
We have had many issues with the brake system. Backup camera has quit. There isn't a lot of room in the driver or passenger section. Back seats are roomy. Performance is on par for this type of vehicle. Have had brakes replaced 3 times. Drivability is good. Like the car overall.

Likes and dislikes pertaining to my ford edge.
I like my vehicle because it looks great and is easy to get in and out of and maintain. I like the fact that you sit up higher than in a regular sedan, thus being able to see the road better. I also really like that when I am sitting on the passenger side there is enough room for my legs to stretch out in front of me and I do not feel cramped. There is also plenty of room in the backseat for three adults to sit very comfortably. The ride in both the front and back seats is very comfortable. I was surprised the first time I sat in the back seat how much room and how comfortable the ride was! This car allows you to talk on your phone with hands free, which is a feature I really like. My car has a retractable top and I particularly like having the window on the ceiling in both front and back. It makes it seem so much more open. There is plenty of room in the trunk area and the back seats do fold down too so there is enough room for lots of luggage or to transport much larger items. We even bought a large sofa table while on vacation and brought it home in this car. There are a few things about this car that I am not real happy with though and wish were different. When driving and looking out there is a blind spot on both the right and left sides where the door meets the windshield. When making a left turn, it is hard to see where you are. Also, I have trouble with the lights when switching from low to high beam and back again making the turn signal come on. I have often lamented that I wish this light switch was still on the floor like it used to be in cars of the past. All in all I do like this car and would purchase one like it again.

My 2011 ford edge experience.
My 2011 ford edge rides great! It is a comfortable vehicle and very roomy. Gas mileage is great and is not considered very costly when it comes to filling up the tank! I have had hardly any problems with it and have been driving it for a while now! I would 10/10 recommended this vehicle to someone with kids, an older person, or someone who simply enjoys driving SUV’s!

Love this car! Super safe!
My Ford is amazing! A super reliable vehicle with pretty good gas mileage. I always feel super safe driving my car. The leather seats and seat heaters make it that much more luxurious, and the panoramic sunroof brings in so much brightness. This car makes me excited to drive!

It drives nice and is safe.
I love the sunroof it goes all the way to the back seats. I love that it has heated seats and that each front passenger can control their temperature. I love that it is push to start.

Honestly a fantastic vehicle.
I've had my car for 6 months now with no problems. The gas mileage is a lot better than vehicles I've had in the past. I love the sun and moon roof. The speakers are amazing. The touch screen puts everything in one place so it is easily accessible while driving.

Great vehicle and very affordable.
It can be to small for travel. But it does take me to where I need to go. It also allows me to carry both my children when we need to go somewhere. It is also good on gas. I haven't had a problem with my vehicle since I have had it. So far I do enjoy my vehicle. No real major damages or issues.
