2015 Ford Edge Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV Loaded With Costly Electrical Bugs

Alex Showalter
Oct 20, 2022

The 2015 Ford Edge lasts around 200,000 miles with some serious electrical and engine issues reported. At $12,250 to $17,325, it’s cheaper than average, but repair costs get very expensive as it ages.

likeFilled The Good
Suspension is smoother than other midsize SUVs, interior materials are nice for the price and the Sport model is quicker than average.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Visibility is poor with the large roof pillars, there’s no third row available and the transmission is slow to shift between gears.

Is the 2015 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2015 is a bad year for the Ford Edge since there are some expensive engine problems giving it a low overall rating. Owner reviews complain about broken parts, a bouncy suspension, as well as high ownership costs.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are nicer than other midsize SUVs in the same price range, the seats are comfortable, cargo space is also better than average.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are a lot of reported engine & computer problems on the 2015 Ford Edge. Avoid models from 20112013, as well as 20152016. Models from 20172022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is average from the base engines, while the V6 found in the Sport model is quicker than most other midsize SUVs.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2015 Edge earns a perfect 5-star rating in all government crash tests. Standard safety features include a rearview camera. Blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning & intervention, as well as automatic braking are available as options.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 24 MPG giving 460 miles of range from the 19.2 gallon gas tank. Gas costs are $13 higher than average at $272 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – Expensive mechanical problems parried with rapid depreciation make the 2015 Ford Edge a bad long-term value.

Storage space is good. Fuel mileage is also good.
Have owned this vehicle for approximately 2 years. Have not had any mechanical issues during ownership.

The Ford Edge is a very comfortable vehicle to sit in and drive
I love the interior space the Edge has and the way it drives. It is a great looking vehicle. I can't think of anything I dislike on it.

It is quiet when driving. You don't hear any "road" noise. It is very comfortable.
I love this Edge. I previously had a car and this Ford is so much better. It also has me sitting higher in the vehicle when driving.

Spacious and dependable vehicle!
It is a very reliable vehicle! I love the space it provides! It does great in all weather especially the snow! The push to start is a great thing to have! I have the weathertech floor mats which are a must have! The edge also comes with heated seats great for chilly mornings!

Get the Titanium package. It has all the bells and whistles and very worthwhile.
I love all the amenities in my car. It has built in navigation, bluetooth, heated seats and more. It gets about 19 mpg in the city. It's a beautiful blue color and extremely roomy.

Has a backup camera which helps backing up. Also has an automatic lift gate which comes in handy when your hand are full
I am a Ford person and when the edge came out I fell in love. It is good on gas and very comfortable. I like all the added things it comes with. This is my second Edge since 2011.

I love the reliability of the car, the heated seats and the comfortable ride. It is been a great vehicle for me. It is big enough to be able to fit my family comfortably and they are all very tall! The headroom is amazing. I love the glass sunroof as well. You can get some rays without the wind blowing everywhere.

Very nice and reliable. Always takes me where I need to go. I love having a dependable car. My fiancee is actually getting one as well in the next year. We love it. It is easy on the kids also, they sleep like rocks when we are in the car. My mother inlaw is the one who told me to get this. She did something right haha!

Flex Plate Defect
We bought our 2015 Ford Edge Titanium about a year ago. Everything ran fine until three weeks ago. The transmission went out while we were on the interstate. In doing some research, we discovered there is a known issue with the Flex Plate connected to the transmission. It cracks. And when it cracks it has catastrophic results. It caused the flywheel to shred and in doing so, it clipped one of the engine gaskets. Ford is fully aware of this defect and even has a parts list out for the fix. But....they will not issue a recall. This has happened to several owners of the 2015-2018 models. I have been without my Edge for 3.5 weeks now and it's going to cost over $2500 to fix it.

My water pump failed in a car with 60.0000 miles
I couldn't believe it, but it happened, my water pump failed and I barely drive my car in 4 years. I bought it with 0 miles in 2015 and now I have to pay for water pump and transmission fluid leak. I know there is a lawsuit for these problems and I can't believe how the dealers knowing these issues sold cars that potentially will fail adding not only additional money to pay for repair the car but all the damages in owners life. Very upset fir the quality of hat cars.

Worst SUV experience ever.
Horrible ride on highways you feel every bump and hard to find comfort. Fuel mileage is not great and the eco mode seems useless. Car is top heavy and horrible acceleration. Definitely don't recommend it's been a big let down. Spent extra for possible comfort and convenience but neither have been available.

Ford edge review for the parent and commuter.
The fuel efficiency is really good. The handling and traction is on par. The room is great for a family of 4 with a dog. The i4 is a little hard to get use to from a v6, but all in all I think that this is a great vehicle and I would recommend to a friend.

No power in the 2015 edge sel.
My 2015 ford edge is a medium size SUV, it holders passengers comfortable and has a decent size trunk. What is not nice about this vehicle is that the 4 cylinder engine size it too small and has no acceleration power, and hesitation when stepping on the gas quickly, a very unsafe option and surprised that ford put such a small engine for a midsize SUV, normally not their cheapest experience.
accountCircle Jay M
Nice car horrible electronics
Nice vehicle but it is a pig for gas and has a horrible electronics system in that I have had 2 major failures
accountCircle Kathleen K
It is uncomfortable. I haven't had any recalls.
I like that it's dependable gets me to where I need to go. I don't like it because I feel cramped and its very uncomfortable.
accountCircle Gabby P
I like that the trunk opens automatically and that it is. A start touch car.
The tire air is always low. And check engine light keeps going off. I make sure to keep up with oil changes, had car checked by professional mechanic. The light still goes off on even though nothing is wrong with car, strange. Reliable car, runs well, wish it was better on gas. Safe car and good for families with children.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports says the Edge offers some quality improvements over older years, although owner satisfaction scores are low.
  • Edmunds gives the Edge a 4/5 praising the smooth suspension, but doesn’t like the annoying stereo system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Edge at 4.4/5, enjoying the sporty driving experience for an SUV while owners don’t like the relatively small interior.

What Common Problems Does the 2015 Ford Edge Have?

Common problems found on the 2015 Ford Edge include the engine dying while driving, electrical failures, along with water leaking into the cabin. Overall, these problems are more severe than other midsize SUVs, with higher repair costs as well.

The engine dying while driving is a widespread complaint from owners showing up in the first 35,000 miles. There are problems with the electronic throttle body which cause the engine to stall. Replacing the throttle body costs around $700. There are also some sensor issues which can cost $100 to $800 to change, depending on the source.

Electrical failures show up on some 2015 Ford Edge models in the first 50,000 miles as well. The computer is a known weak spot in the Edge, which fails as the SUV ages. Replacing the computer is an expensive project, costing around $1,600 depending on local labor rates.

Water leaking into the cabin has also been mentioned by some owners in the first 20,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by a clogged drain line for the sun roof. Clearing out the line costs around $100. If the problem was caused by a worn-out gasket, then replacing it costs about $400.

There are 5 serious recalls, which are more severe than other midsize SUVs from 2015. The most dangerous recall covers front brake hoses which can rupture, leading to a loss of braking ability. Ford will replace the lines for free on affected models. Other recalls include broken steering gears, as well as stability control software problems.

How Long Will the 2015 Ford Edge Last?

A well-maintained 2015 Ford Edge should last around 200,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $517 per year.

Since nearly all 2015 Ford Edge models for sale have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the transmission oil cooler lines for $450, radiator hoses costing $550, as well as the engine oil cooler which costs $425.

accountCircle Caitlynn G

Yes, extremely reliable car. That is the primary reason it has become our primary care. We have experienced no issues with the vehicle since purchasing it.

accountCircle Judy F

It is. The low tire pressure alert comes on when the tires are fine, but it is been a sound car mechanically overall.

accountCircle danny s

It is a very reliable vehicle as long as one keeps up with the maintenance. The vehicle is not designed for the home mechanic to be able to work on it. This is its main problem.

accountCircle Lauren F

Completely reliable. I have never owned a car that is been more reliable than this one. No, this car does not have any problems.

accountCircle J T

So far I have had no issues on the reliability of my car. The car lets me know when I need to get the oil changed so it’s done on a regular basis.

accountCircle Kb B

No major problems as of yet and I have not had any recalls. This vehicle has been super reliable even with the amount of miles I drive 102k in less than 4 years.

accountCircle Lacey P

Very reliable, so far. I don't feel any problems, as long as it's well maintained and you keep up with oil changes, etc.

accountCircle Gary T

I have a 4 cylinder which is a little slow getting on the freeway but I assume the 6 cycling area would be perfect. It doesn't have any mechanical issues the 4 cylinder is a personal preference.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2015 Ford Edge with a standard 4.2-ich screen as well as an optional 8-inch screen with MyFord Touch software. Safety technology is great for an SUV its age with a standard rearview camera. Optional safety technology includes blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning with intervention, as well as forward collision warning with automatic braking.

Is the 2015 Ford Edge a Good Value?

No, the 2015 Ford Edge is a bad value since there are a lot of engine problems reported by owners. Blue book prices range from $12,250 to $17,325, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Subaru Outback. When new, the price range was $28,100 to $40,095. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford Edge?

There are four models of the Ford Edge offered in 2015, from the base SE all the way up to the more powerful Sport.

  • The sport model has a powerful 2.7L V6 which offers 315 horsepower at up to 21 MPG. Performance is good, taking 6.8 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

The 2015 Ford Edge is a very comfortable midsize SUV with seating for up to 5 people. Seating throughout the cabin is supportive and comfortable with better materials than older models.

Passenger room is good throughout the Edge with plenty of leg room for adults in the back seats.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Ford Edge was introduced in 2015, and is still being made in 2022.

2013: Base SE model available with optional all-wheel-drive.

2014: No major changes.

2015: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new interior, exterior, and engine choices.

2016: New Sync 3 stereo system added, standard keyless entry & ignition.

2017: No major changes.

2018: No changes from the previous year.

2019: Minor exterior changes, new 8-speed transmission, more advanced safety features added.

How Does the Ford Edge Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Edge scores worse than a lot of other midsize SUVs from 2015 since there are expensive engine and electrical problems, making it one buyers should avoid.

The Ford Escape is a smaller SUV from Ford which costs around $1,000 less. Reliability ratings are better in the Ford Escape, while the Ford Edge offers more passenger room. We recommend the Ford Escape for 2015 since it has lower ownership costs, although both are not highly-rated.

The Nissan Rogue is another SUV which costs about $2,000 more. Technology is a bit better in the Nissan Rogue, while the Ford Edge is quicker with more powerful engines available. We recommend avoiding both SUVs for 2015 since the Rogue has transmission problems while the Edge has engine and electrical issues.

Do Owners Recommend the Ford Edge?

accountCircle Caitlynn G

Yes. We have loved having this vehicle. It is very durable with great gas mileage. There is ample amount of space inside the car which has served us greatly. Comfortable interior.

accountCircle Judy F

Mostly. It does some weird stuff like indicate low tire pressure when the tires are fine. This typically occurs during cold weather, so it is obviously an issue with the sensor.

accountCircle danny s

It is an excellent vehicle for both city and highway driving. The engine is pretty bulletproof but the repair and upkeep prices are too high. Example: 300.00 for six plugs to be changed because the mechanic has to remove the intake to reach the rear three plugs.

accountCircle Lauren F

Absolutely. This has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. My husband and I both enjoy it so much, when it is time for me to get a new car, he's going to take over this edge.

Sporty, reliable, affordable SUV.
Very reliable car with all of the comfort features including leather, heated seats, lots of legroom in front and back, as well as large cargo space and split-seating in back for added storage. Heat controls for back seat, premium stereo with Bluetooth capability and Sirius radio. Large, full-screen backup camera, heated side mirrors and automatic dimmer on rearview mirror. Safety features such as airbags, alb. The car is extremely reliable, handles well in all weather conditions. Button-push start, keyless entry, and keyless lock options on door handle. Space and comfort for the family.
I do love the car, upgraded for a baby. Now that we are looking to add to our family more, seems like we just already outgrew the car with the size of car seats and how much they need to come along for a trip. Overall great car, blind spot is a little tricky but the mirrors make up for it.

It is just a typical ford.
It is like a normal car. Only fits 5 people which in today’s society, having a vehicle to fit 7 is beneficial and something that I wish I had. It is reliable, however, there have been several recalls on something dealing with the motor but it is a vehicle so I guess that is normal. Overall tho, for a midsize SUV, it is decent and pretty nice.

First thing I like about this vehicle is the design. It looks really great from the outside. Also I like the performance. It drives very well. Very comfortable and quiet. At times, I cannot hear the motor running. It is very powerful and spacious on the inside. I often put the back seats down and carry my stuffs. The entertainment system is great, very loud. Very comfortable and quiet. I feel secure when driving this car and safe. The only issue is gas mileage is not as good as I would have hoped. It averages under 20 mpg. This is mostly due to my driving around town versus on the highway. I enjoy the size of the vehicle not too big or too small.

Great SUV but the computerized settings can be annoying.
I bought my 2015 ford edge used. It only came with one key fob and needs two. It requires administrator key fob to remove the my key restrictions. My speed limit is governed to 80 mph and I cannot change the settings unless I take it to a shop or buy a second key. That second key then would need to be programmed, so I'd probably have to take it to a ford dealership for that. Otherwise I love almost everything about it.

2015 ford edge titanium nice looking car but a lot of problems for a car.
My car drives very smooth. There is a lot of room inside for tall people. The heated seats are great here in New England. I enjoy the automatic windshield wipers. The reason I gave it a 4 is because the car is 5 years old with 33k and have had to replace the transfer case and now they think the rear seal is gone. They added dye and I have to drive it 500 miles. There is also a recall for the front brakes and they have no resolution.

Ford edge SUV pros and cons.
Great car as far as size goes. You can fit 4 in the backseat comfortably. Also the leather interior really makes it feel like you are on a couch. Only thing is you have to make sure you check your tires, suspension, bearings, and the breaks. Cause they get kind of noisy and makes the ride uncomfortable. Overall a great car if you are looking for more space but not a giant SUV.

Really reliable, only one small transmission issue since we got it in 2016. The car runs great and has a lot of features for the price. Great fuel economy, that has saved me a lot of money over time. Ours has 121000 miles on it and still runs like it is brand new.

Comfortable to drive and very attractive looking.
Love my Edge. I had a sedan before this purchase. I like sitting up higher when driving, it is quiet with no road noise, and is very comfortable.

Ford Edge: it's a solid car that'll basically last forever.
I feel very safe in it. It was easy to get familiarized with and there's so much room for activities!

Spacious, reliable and cute!
My only issue was with the sync system. We had to reset it a few times by unplugging the car battery. It is a common problem. Other than that, I love it. Comfy, good gas mileage, reliable. It is incredibly spacious, perfect for running errands! It is perfect for a family car with still being cute!

2015 ford edge sel has very comfortable seats.
There have been several recalls on this vehicle that are inconvenient. The rearview mirror rattles, the back passenger side door rattles. Something is always rattling even if there is nothing in the car besides the key and myself. The car drives nicely and I feel like it is reliable despite the recalls so far. The seats are very easy to readjust. I like that you can lift the seat up to sit higher for clearer view, as I am short.

The 2015 Ford Edge SEL. Style, comfort, reliability.
The 2015 Ford Edge is an excellent vehicle that performs as well as it looks. Sleek, peppy, and loaded with safety features including backup camera and driver and passenger side airbags. It handles beautifully, and the interior is comfortable as well as functional. Excellent vehicle for the price!

It is reliable and durable.
I had a 2007 Edge and it was reliable and trustworthy which is why I opted to get a another one. Overall it is a good, durable vehicle. I wish it had a little more room for my family and the traction in the winter is not the best.

Gas Usage and easy to operate.
Easy to operate. Good or gas. Roomy inside and plenty of room to seat five adults. Price for the automobile was great.

2015 ford edge with all new technology.
Oversized - could be more compact. Also sucks on fuel. Other than that the ford edge sel is really great. It has a lot of features which make it seem like it would be from 2020. I haven't had any technical issues with it, and really no problems at all. I have always owned ford vehicles and I probably always will.

It is the most comfortable and reliable car you will ever own.
My edge is roomy and comfortable. My edge is the perfect height to make me feel safe. My edge gets very good gas mileage. It's safe and dependable.

Ford edge: stylish and reliable.
It is a very reliable car. The only issue I have is that if the SD card is removed during driving that the car will have to reset itself and you will lose music, navigation, phone access for a short time. The gas mileage is around 25-30 depending on how you are traveling. The leather trim is holding up really well and my car still looks brand new even though it is five years old.

I love how much space my vehicle offers.
The vehicle is very roomy and comfortable. There is a ton of storage space. No real issues except the fact that I am on the short side (5’1”) and the pedals do not move which makes it difficult for me to reach the pedals but it is workable. Overall I love the vehicle and it is very reliable.

It is comfortable and safe.
It is big enough to make me feel safe on the road, it rides smoothly, and it has room to haul lots of stuff. I love having it when going on road trips.

Love my 2015 ford edge titanium.
I purchased my car used, with 24,000 miles, and I love it! Sporty, but yet economical. Great gas mileage. I have had no mechanical issues, but I do have my vehicle routinely serviced. Plenty of space for all of my hauling needs and fits 5 comfortably. I would look to buy again.
