2017 Ford Edge Review: Reliable & Comfortable Midsize SUV With Advanced Safety Features

Alex Showalter
Nov 26, 2022

The 2017 Ford Edge lasts around 200,000 miles with only some engine gasket and rear hatch issues reported. At $14,550 to $21,400, it’s a decent value for a midsize SUV with an upscale interior and good technology.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is smoother than other SUVs, interior materials are nicer than a lot of the competition and the Sync 3 stereo system is very easy to use.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Rear visibility is poor due to the wide pillars, there’s no third row offered and the transmission is slow to shift between gears.

Is the 2017 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2017 is a good year for the Ford Edge, although it’s not as up-to-date as other midsize SUVs on the market, giving it an average overall score. Owner reviews praise the strong engines, roomy interior, as well as the all-wheel drive system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are luxurious compared to other SUVs in the same price range, seating is comfortable, cargo space is also very good.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no widespread problems found on the 2017 Ford Edge, making it better than earlier years. Avoid models from 20152016 since they have a lot of engine problems, and go with a 20172022 which are more reliable.
  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is okay from the standard 4-cylinder, while the EcoBoost V6 found in the Sport model is very quick.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2017 Edge is a safe SUV, getting a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. Standard safety features include a rearview camera & Sync crash notifications. Optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, as well as forward collision warning with automatic braking.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 24 MPG, giving 432 miles of range from the 18 gallon tank. Gas costs are $3 cheaper than average at $245 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2017 Ford Edge is cheaper than many other midsize SUVs, although it also loses value quickly, giving it an average value score.

Loving my ford edge, perfect size not to big not small.
I bought my vehicle 2017 new I feel in love with it even though I did have a lot of feature compared to my last vehicle but this edge is perfect for me. I have not encountered problem yet so far and hope not at all. I love playing music in my car and the sour round sounds made it so perfect and enjoyable.

Everything a mom could want!
So far, it has been an ideal car. I love the heated seats and panoramic sunroof. The screen display is awesome. It is quite large, which is helpful for seeing the map directions and reverse camera. It has a lot of trunk space, which is a must with kids. Thankfully, I haven't had any issues up to this point.

An upper-mid size SUV that is great for families and cargo space!
I have owned my ford edge since January of 2019. It has been a great upgrade for our family's needs in terms of space, not just for passengers, but also for cargo. While it is not the biggest SUV out there, that is actually another bonus because it gets very good gas mileage for its class at about 27 mpg highway, and even better than that if it is flat interstate!
accountCircle Lauren S
Great looking with amazing views of the sky. Comfortable with lots of amenities!
Love the style, large sunroof, and roomy interior. Wish I could move the back seat bench forward or backwards.

Safe vehicle that our family loves driving with great gas mileage.
I really like the wide wheel base on the vehicle. Makes the vehicle more stable on the road. Love the safety features and the roomy back seat with room for the baby's carseat.

Great vehicle for the family!
I purchased this vehicle because I was expecting a little boy. This vehicle has certainly lived up to my expectations. It handles well, has excellent safety ratings. It is spacious for a car seat, stroller and more! The back hatch opens up and even provides space to change diapers so you do not have to use the ones in public restrooms!

Known engine problem they refuse to recall
The 2017 Ford Edge is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. The service department knows me on a first name basis. The list is too long but the final straw was the head gaskets are faulty and leaked coolant into the engine. I now have to replace the engine on a 3 year old car. The mechanic told me this is a known problem. I called Ford and they refuse to recall or help pay for the cost. Awful product. Awful company.

Ford is pretty bad, buy a different car.
It is way too much to maintain, and the maintenance is way too much, and it constantly breaks down. However, it is easy to get mileage, and the interior seems good, and the leather is nice, but the actual car is not that good. The best thing to do is just to not buy a Ford car, and get something similar, but better, like a Honda.
accountCircle K.D
Worst purchase.
The car starting having a knocking feeling in the steering column at 3,000 miles when breaking, reversing or hitting large bumps in the road. No dealer has been able to fix the issue in a year. Ridiculous that it would have any issues this early on. Getting rid of this as soon as possible.

Engine problem
Loved the car until the engine light came on with83000 miles. Learned that is a common problem because of coolant leakage into the engine. Solution: replace engine. Cost $7000. Not a Ford fan right now.

What next.
I owned it for 12 days. It has thrown 3 fault codes and has had a new battery installed. Now it's in the shop waiting for a new motor. We shall see. Not happy. I am wondering if lemon law is close at hand.

Don't buy this car it sucks! The locks constantly malfunction.
Besides being slow this car has had a slew of issues. One of the biggest is that the locks malfunction, even locking me in the car and out of the car several times. Plus Ford has terrible customer service, I was hung up on!
accountCircle Kel C
Good for gas, but that is it.
It is not comfortable to ride in and feels like you are driving a go cart. I have had tire trouble and the information screen does not give enough information on where the problem is. If a tire is low it does not tell you which one. That would be nice if it was more communicative.
accountCircle Walt Reed
Poor reliability, cheap construction
30,000 miles and the front wheel bearing has already failed. When you look under the covers, everything screams cheap with massive amounts of low-quality plastic that fractures easily at standard winter temperatures. There are some nice features in this car, but nothing really special or unique. The road noise is louder than it should be at this price point for the Titanium trim.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Ford Edge offers a premium feel, with average long-term owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2017 Ford Edge at 4/5, praising the smooth ride, but doesn’t like the slow transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Edge a 4.4/5, enjoying the optional safety technology, but owners don’t like the poor off-road performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Ford Edge Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Ford Edge include some engine gasket issues, a damaged rear hatch, as well as broken door handles. Overall, most of these problems are similar to other midsize SUVs, although repair costs are slightly higher than average.

Engine gasket issues show up on some 2017 Ford Edge models at around 80,000 miles, although they are not as widespread as in earlier years. Owners report gaskets wearing out, leading to coolant leaks. Replacing the gaskets costs around $1,000, depending on local labor rates.

Damaged rear hatch motors have also been mentioned by some owners at roughly 20,000 miles. The rear hatch motor gets damaged in the rain, in some cases due to a torn window gasket, leading to the hatch opening. Replacing the window gasket and motor costs around $700.

Broken door handles have also shown up on some 2017 Ford Edge models at around 25,000 miles. The linkage between the door handle and the latch breaks in the door, causing it to fail. Replacing the door handle costs about $150, although if it’s not fully broken it can usually be repaired for under $50.

There are 6 recalls on the 2017 Ford Edge, which are worse than some other midsize SUVs. The most serious recall covers the torque converter-to-flywheel connection, which can fail. Ford will replace the torque converter studs, and in some cases the full unit for free. Other recalls cover airbags, which are common on all SUVs.

How Long Will the 2017 Ford Edge Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Ford Edge should last around 200,000 miles, which is roughly 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $530 per year.

As a 2017 Ford Edge reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the water pump for $1,100, the wheel hub assembly costing $400, as well as the purge valve, which costs around $100.

accountCircle Joel M

It’s very reliable. I drive it throughout the entire year in all types of weather conditions and never have a problem with getting to where I need to go

accountCircle Brittany M

It is very reliable, the only problem I have is that some of the interior controls sometimes break and need to be replaced

accountCircle Jennie A

The 2017 ford edge is an extremely reliable vehicle. We love to go on weekend road trips in this vehicle. It also has ecoboost. The only problem is a fluttering that you can feel in your ears when you roll all the windows down.

accountCircle Laura M

The 2017 ford edge vehicle is very reliable I have not encountered any problems since I have been driving this vehicle

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is slightly worse than average, only offering a standard 4.2-inch display. The Sync 3 stereo system with an 8-inch touchscreen is available as an optional upgrade.

Safety technology is good, offering a standard rearview camera as well as MyKey, which allows you to set driver limits for teens. Optional safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, along with automatic emergency braking.

Is the 2017 Ford Edge a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 Ford Edge is a decent value since it’s more affordable than many other midsize SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $14,550 to $21,400, making it cheaper than a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Subaru Outback. When new, the price range was $28,950 to $40,900. Depreciation is a bit worse than other SUVs, losing about 14% of its current value per year.

2015: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new engines, interior, and exterior styling.

2016: Keyless ignition & entry are standard, new Sync 3 stereo system offered.

2017: No major changes.

How Does the Ford Edge Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Edge is an average midsize SUV, and it doesn’t really stand out as a leader in any  category, aside from being a budget-friendly choice.

The Ford Escape is a smaller SUV offered by Ford which costs around $500 less. Steering is more responsive in the Ford Escape, while the Ford Edge has much better passenger room and technology. We recommend the Ford Edge since there are fewer mechanical problems reported by owners.

The Chevy Equinox is another SUV which costs about $1,000 less. Base technology is better in the Chevy Equinox, while the Ford Edge has more powerful engine choices available. We recommend the Ford Edge since there are fewer engine problems mentioned leading to lower ownership costs.

Engine issues on 2017 Ford Edge
Very disappointed with Ford and the Edge 2017 engine issues, cooling entering into engine cost to repair $7000 Had maintenance done regularly and could find the issue only that #2 cylinders was misfiring I did a complete tune up and a week later again engine light was on checked it again it said cylinder #2 misfiring change it took a trip again engine light up lights light up saying overheat took it to another mechanic we change again cylinder#2 and than check spark plug #2 and found it was wet as we check it the mechanic said the coolant is bunkering that shouldn’t happen that’s when I found out that coolant was getting into the engine thru cylinder#2 causing engine failed I read several reviews and we should have a class action lawsuit as this problem seems to be consistent. I found myself spending over $7000 and I’m still in debit on the original loan, very disappointed with Ford.

I suffered power loss, especially when passing or in cruise control. Paid to have transmission replaced to no avail. Was then told that the motor is bad and has to be replaced. 72000 miles is all you will get out of this piece of garbage. Ford will not pay to replace. Entire power train system will dump on you before 100,000 miles. Buy a toyota.

The car is very reliable. However more space is needed. It is not great for three kids one of which is an infant. There is also not enough space in the truck to hold baby carrier and groceries. Also drivers seat has to be pulled up to allow space for the car seat.

The ford edge sport has a lot of higher end features you see on more luxury vehicles for a lot less of the price. The performance is great, its roomy, comfortable and quiet. My biggest complaint is the lack of option for power fold side mirrors which should be a standard considering the price tag of $45k. Overall I have been happy with the car and will eventually get a newer ford edge after this.

I love my ford edge. For a small to midsize SUV, it has lots of legroom, a spacious back seat, and plenty of cargo area. I have owned the car for 3 years now and have had no issues. Love my ford edge features!
Features include remote start, automatic lift gate, leather seats, heated seats. It performs pretty well, but could use a little more get up when first accelerating. I like the room in the car, plus the back. Cup holders in the front are put in a weird spot- feels like it interferes with the gear shift.

Vehicle issues and repairs.
A month after purchasing my vehicle the trim around the driver side wheel well came off. I then had ticking noise while driving over 65 and my a/c was not blowing as cold as should have. All problems have been fixed and I was lucky that it was all under the original warranty.

The ford edge, worth that second look.
The 2017 ford edge titanium gives you a great driving experience. The v 6 engine, that I opted for, has the horsepower needed to take on steep inclines without a struggle. The interior is roomy and the passenger back set is cushioned and comfortable on those long drives. It offers great safety features and has more than once prevented me getting into an accident. I have had no problems with this vehicle and I average 26 miles to the gallon. Not bad for a v6. A great quality vehicle that I recommend to anyone who is looking for a mid size SUV crossover.

Very beautiful, reliable form of transportation.
The ford edge has proven to be a very comfortable and reliable ride. Very little complaints so far, only a few minor problems. The vehicle is beautifully designed, it has all the features you need. It has a sleek design and is metallic gray. The gas mileage on this vehicle is very good for a SUV.

Safe vehicle that our family loves driving with great gas mileage.
I really like the wide wheel base on the vehicle. Makes the vehicle more stable on the road. Love the safety features and the roomy back seat with room for the baby's carseat.

The review about the ford edge.
I have no problem with the ford edge. The only real problem is that the gas. Gage is that it is 15 miles off and we ran out of gas. Otherwise it rides pretty nice. I forgot another problem is that the back washer does not work. The car is white so it gets dusty down gravel roads. I like the interior and the backing up screen and the push button starter.

Ford edge SUV perfect for a family with kids or pets.
My ford edge is amazing. Nice engine. Back parking camera. Can be turned into sports mode. Due to it being a bigger SUV the gas mileage is not the best but worth it. Has enough space for a family with kids. Trunk has a lot of space in case bigger purchases or owning a pet or two.

Perfect in between size-not too small but not too big and bulky either.
I love my ford edge. I think it is the perfect in between size, it feels so much bigger on the inside than the escape does but it does not feel like it is too big and bulky to drive around like the explorer or expedition can feel like. It drives really smoothly and is not awful on gas.

2017 ford edge titanium-gorgeous color with voice command and great sound system.
Love my vehicle, however, my husband has a bad back and the shape of the seats is uncomfortable to him. I had an edge previously that had more comfortable seats, and my car is used as the main vacation car, so comfort for passengers is important. If this issue was fixed it would be the perfect car.

Standard Ford Edge with ecoboost
Comfortable, smooth ride, great for long trips, you don't get too sore from sitting. Spacious-took it camping and it fit all the necessary gear. Gas mileage isn't the greatest, averages about 17-20 mpg on hwy.

The best SUV available today.
I love having an SUV, the storage space and visibility are great. The seat settings work great for more than one driver. All of the extras are very good. You get all of the best thing in a car for a decent price. The performance and reliability of this SUV can not be out done by any other vehicle.

Detailed props of ford edge.
It has a clean austere set of steel metal panels and a slightly warmer interior. Controls are simplified with nice matte black facing and also comes with a version of configurable gauge cluster. The steering is quick and gets power from a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline rated at 250 horsepower to 275 pound feet.

I would like a car with new automated functions, more futuristic
My car has not had any date in the last few times, excellent performance, no mechanical or electrical problems, I'm really pleased with all its operation

All around amazingly comfortable ride
The comfort of this car is unbelievable. The ride is so smooth and quiet. Can go long distances and not feel tired at all. The ease of the controls while driving is easy to control. The mileage is top notch. The panoramic sunroof is beyond nice. The people riding in the comfortable back seats get to enjoy the sunroof as well

It is a very comfortable and spacious car for medium sized families.
It is a reliable car and has plenty of room and can fit a lot of stuff in the back for trips. It drives really smooth but has really touchy brakes. It also has a really nice back up camera to help you and the material for the seats are very comfortable.

This car is excellent for a small family. It is dependable drives great and has all the little features that make life just a little bit easier.
We purchased the ford edge as a family vehicle and it has definitely delivered. We love the safety features such as blind spot detection and backup camera. The heated seats in front and back are a luxury. It has a dependable smooth ride we love with just the right amount of room for our small growing family.
