2011 Ford Escape Review: A Compact SUV With a Lot of Downsides

Alex Showalter
Nov 8, 2021

The 2011 Ford Escape is a compact SUV with a price range from $7,742 to $12,427. Even with a low purchase price, the overall value is poor since it’s an expensive SUV to keep running.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Fuel efficient engines, easy to use infotainment and a roomy front cabin are all positives for the Escape.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The frequent engine and transmission problems, coupled with a rough riding suspension and poor quality interior make it tough to recommend.

2011 Ford Escape: Quick Overview

  • New to the 2011 Escape is Ford’s MyKey system, allowing owners to save driving settings to their keys.
  • Reliability ratings are average for the Escape, but it has expensive mechanical problems.
  • Two engines are available. The optional V6 has more power than other compact SUVs.
  • The Ford Escape ranks 3rd in fuel economy out of 26 compact SUVs, getting a combined rating of up to 25 miles per gallon.
  • Safety is below average for its class, earning only three-stars in government crash tests.
  • The 2011 Escape ranks near the middle of the compact SUV lineup. It is an easy SUV to drive since it is smaller than its rivals, but numerous mechanical problems make it one buyers should skip.

It is a great size vehicle which has pretty good storage with seats down.
Its size is good for getting around in tight places. It has been good on gas. It has pretty good storage with the seats down.
accountCircle Robert B
It is a bit small, and the storage space in the rear is a bit lacking.
I like the integrated sound system. I like it is reliability and fuel economy. I dislike the amount of space in the rear.

I feel that it is a safe car for my family.
I love my car. It is a great family car for my family of 4. There is a lot of room in the back for trips out.

Reliability of a ford escape.
My car is very reliable. I have had it for three years now and I take it back and forth to school which is about 250 miles each time. The Bluetooth feature is extremely helpful as I can play music from my phone without any issues. The only issue is that the car is naturally loud, but other than that it is a great car.

It is reliable and have not had any major repairs.
It is reliable. Has the features we like. Reasonable gas mileage. Nothing I really dislike about it.

When you want to get away, the ford escape is fun, roomy and reliable!!
I currently have 262,000 miles on my car and have had no significant problems. I have had the air conditioner fixed twice, but no issues with driving ability. I mainly drive on the highway, and the road noise level is very low. My escape is very roomy, I have two adult children and we have taken many road trips comfortably. My favorite feature of my car is the 'miles to empty' reading. I rely on this heavily and it is always accurate.

Perfect for kayak, phone, roomie.
I really love this car. It rides smooth. I love the fact I don't have to climb and crouch into the car. It has a place to set your phone fits perfectly. Back sets are roomie. If you like me the rack on top is a perfect fit for my kayak. Also can fit one in the back with the glass open!

It was Garbage after 3 Years
My wife purchased this vehicle in 2011. From the first time I drove it I never felt that it performed in a normal way. The transmission always felt "jerky" to me, it would stutter and bang while downshifting and offered an overall uncomfortable ride. We took it into Ford and they said "That's the vehicle adjusting to your driving style and it will go away after a while". Now I'm no car expert by any stretch, but I can certainly smell s**t when it's thrown at me. The transmission issues progressed to leaking from all sorts of spots. To keep this review short I will highlight the issues that we have had: - Transmission leaking - Front differential leaking - AC blower motor/condenser replaced FOUR times - Rear window hinges have literally disintegrated and the window is currently taped into place (I can't tell you how many similar models I see on the road with the window taped) - Engine loses power climbing hills I can't wait until this thing is melted down. Pure dog s**t

Beware of the long haul with this vehicle
This car as soon as it hit 100,000 miles started having so many issues, back gate doesn't work, a/c is going out, o2 sensors going bad, just a horrible past few months

Do not recommend it to anyone who is looking for a dependable vehicle.
This particular vehicle in my opinion..Is not a bad vehicle..But is not the best either..Many problems occur under the body also under the hood not to mention everything is basically electronic..It is not really meant for country lifestyle..Is not 4 wheel drive..Does best in city where there is not a lot of hills..A lot of sensor's throughout the vehicle..Honest opinion would not be a vehicle I would recommend at all... To many problems I could go on forever.

Does not handle salt well.
My Ford Escape driving door will not close anymore and my exhaust fell out recently. What I do about it is I like having a sunroof and a lot of space. But it does not handle New York winters very well. My tires do not seem to last very long either along with my brakes.
accountCircle London B
My vehicle is a crazy car that I love but has so many problems with it.
The starter of the car is super bad and it takes so long to start. Also the car stutters sometimes when your driving past 80. Then in for some reason the passenger side door does not open and it takes so much force just to open it. There's this really bad smell in the back that has been in there for years.

My car needs work but it is been good to me.
It is old and has a lot of miles. It has several things wrong with it. I would really like to purchase a newer car but I cannot afFord to right now.

What Problems Does the 2011 Ford Escape Have?

The 2011 Ford Escape has fewer problems than the 2010 and 2012 models, but still has a lot of issues for its class. Loss of throttle response is the most common problem owners mention. Usually, the throttle body has to be replaced to get it working again. Transmission problems are also frequently reported with it hesitating while accelerating. Power steering failures also happen, requiring steering column and electronic power steering system replacements.

There are three recalls affecting the Escape, below average for an SUV its age. Recalls include the loss of electric power steering assistance, front wheel bearings, and the fuel delivery module. Most serious is the fuel delivery module cracking since it increases the risk of a fire.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2011 Ford Escape trims include three standard options and two hybrid models, with entry-level XLS featuring 2.5L engine. The 2011 Escape is average-priced for its class, and available from $7,742 to $12,427 depending on the mileage and model. When new, it had a retail price of $21,240 to $33,080. Depreciation is faster than average, losing 53% of its value in the first five years.

  • XLS is the base model. Features include cloth seating, cruise control, a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system with an aux input, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.
  • XLT is found in the middle of the lineup. Upgrades consist of premium cloth seating, power driver’s seat, dual zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, satellite radio, and fog lights.
  • Limited is the flagship choice. Leather seating is standard, along with heated front seats, an improved stereo with six-speakers, heated mirrors, and Sync navigation.

How Long Will the 2011 Ford Escape Last?

A properly maintained 2011 Ford Escape will only last about 150,000 miles, a shorter lifespan than other compact SUVs. Repair Pal estimates it will be more expensive than other choices as well, costing $570 per year to maintain.

accountCircle Olivia H

It is very reliable. I love it and have not had any real problems with it. Once in a while, the Bluetooth messes up a bit, but it is easily fixed by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

accountCircle Abbie M

Yes it is a very reliable and safe car. And no. It does not have any current problems. I love this car and will always drive ford.

accountCircle John S

It is reliable. Other than normal wear and tear issues I have had no problems with the vehicle since getting it.

accountCircle lyda h

It has been a great SUV for my family. I have had 0 issues besides the rust and the blower motor sensor.

accountCircle Diana S

Having purchased it used, I only had problems with the ac fan working properly. It now only works on high.

accountCircle Natalie P

Yes it is for the most part a reliable car. I had problems with the battery dying and then the only other problem was the back hatch was locked and I couldn't get it open.

accountCircle Tammy A

Yes it has been reliable. The only problem I had with it is the air conditioning went out in the hottest weather and I could not get it fixed right away.

accountCircle Josh R

Yes it is reliable. It had some wiring problems with the brake light switch. Great on snow and ice and rain.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Technology is basic in the 2011 Escape. It has most of the same technology from when it was introduced in 2008.

  • Base technology includes a four-speaker stereo system with AM/FM/CD playback.

What Engine Options are Available?

The 2011 Ford Escape engine options include 2.5L inline-four, powerful 3.0L V6, and an available hybrid. Performance in the 2011 Escape is below average for its class with the four-cylinder engine, and adequate with the V6. The upgraded engine gets the car from 0 to 60 in 8.1 seconds.

  • The base engine is the more fuel-efficient 2.5L four-cylinder with 171 horsepower.
  • An upgraded 3L V6 produces  240 horsepower.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Escape?

The 2011 Ford Escape is smaller than its competitors. Passenger room in the front seats is good, but the rear seats are very small and cramped for its class. The Escape has 31.4 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seats up, and increases to 67.2 cu. ft. when they’re folded flat. It’s an average amount of space, but there are compact SUVs with more room.

How Does the 2011 Ford Escape Compare to Other SUVs?

Owners rank the 2011 Escape 10th out of 26 compact SUVs. At the top of the lineup is the Land Rover LR4, which is much more luxurious and capable off-road than the Escape, but has a higher price tag. Where Ford wins out is with lower ownership costs since it is less expensive to maintain than a Land Rover. The two SUVs target different buyers, so it comes down to what you are looking for in a vehicle.

Another competitor is the Subaru Forester, which is closer in price to the Ford. The Forester has all-wheel-drive offered as standard, better reliability ratings, and a higher-quality interior. Fuel-efficiency and the infotainment system are better in the Escape. Overall, the Forester is a better SUV and will spend less time in the shop than the Ford.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Ford Escape a Good SUV?

Based on our research and ownership data, the 2011 Ford Escape is not a good SUV. It’s easy to drive in the city, fits into small parking spaces, and has good driver visibility with no serious blind spots. Negatives outweigh the positives, though, including lackluster materials used throughout the interior, and a long list of mechanical issues. Overall, the 2011 Escape is one that buyers should avoid.

Most awesome suv I’ve owned
I absolutely love mine, I bought it used with 150,000 miles on and other than replacing the front ball bearing which I expected with the amount of miles on it. It’s a beast in 12 inches of snow, and gets me everywhere I need to go without the worrying sounds that it might break down which I got from most of the cars I had that were deemed very reliable like the civic. My next car most def will be another escape!

2011 3.0 ltr AWD
I absolutely love my Escape! I've owned it for 4 years. I bought it used with 122,000 miles on it. I now have 223,000 miles on it. I've done dozens of 16 hr drives and a couple 23 hrs drives in it. The seats are extremely comfortable. I've been through horrible snow storms, snowy icy roads, and it's never been an issue. They are suprisingly good off road, the intelligent AWD keeps you going even in the nasty stuff. The have great cargo capacity as well. My daughter found out the hard way in hers, that they take a hard side impact very well, and she walked away unharmed. Side airbags front and rear. I would and DO recommended them to everyone!!

Poor fit and body quality.
The interior of my car is very nice however the fit and finish is not so good. If you sit in the back seat you can hear air coming through both rear doors. They're rear wheel wells on both sides of the car are severely rusting and started rusting the couples years after I purchased the car. This is a very unsatisfactory.

Spacious yet compact SUV vehicle.
This vehicle is wonderful for a small family. There is enough room for car seats but it is also compact enough to fit comfortably in the garage. It is drives smoothly and comfortably. This vehicle has been reliable to me thus far and I have never had any issues with it. The trunk is very spacious which I love. There is room for many items that kids need.

It has enough car chargers in the back so everyone can plug in their devices.
It has so much room. It runs smooth and having the backup camera is the best. It has a big screen for the radio and other digital items, making it easier to see at night. You can get google maps right on the screen to help you if you are in an area you are not familiar with. I love the ford escape.

My ford escape has been very reliable for the last 4 years. It gets good gas mileage. Does great with oil. I have had two problem with my ac but it was just wear and tear. My particular car doesn't have any fancy features and I really wish it did. Back seat vents would be a plus.

Great reliable car that will last.
This car has held up nicely over the years. It still runs smoothly, has not had any need for repairs, and is in good condition. There are a few odd noises every now and then such at rattling in the gear shift and window but besides that I haven't had many problems. The air conditioning fan did need to be replaced after 7 years because it started to die out. Would be happy to purchase again in the future.

Old escape model expectations.
The ford escape is a reliable SUV type with a comfortable drive and lots of room within the vehicle. The make of my car is a 2011, and is getting a bit old. I enjoy the sunroof and comfort of the material seats. The air conditioning has had several issues, but all were able to be fixed. The speakers have gone out. The car becomes a bit shaky after reaching 80 mph, but is fine to drive even at 85mph. It is overall a great car and better modeled than the newer escapes.

Lots of room, reliable family car, little chronic problems, but need to replace struts. The food down seats are nice, the back window wiper motor went pretty quick, however the car is very easy to work on so you can save some money if anything goes wrong.

The car is the perfect size. Great utility vehicle and holds up to long road trips well. Decent gas mileage in rural areas but very limited in urban environments. My car is sturdy and gets the job done. The gas mileage is decent for an SUV, and there is plenty of room for my entire family. 2011 ford escape XLT good for the price.
The engine supports squeak. Other than that, I am pleased with the vehicle. I average about 24 miles per gallon. The escape has power windows and a sunroof, all of which function properly without any issues. My model has a leather interior which is great if you have kids. It does get hot if parked in the sun, but it is very easy for cleanup should any spills happen. The back seats fold forward to allow for more trunk space which is very nice. There is also a small roof rack. It is not designed for heavy loads but can be very helpful if you need a little extra space or it you have any long items to transport. Overall I am happy with the vehicle and would recommend it to other buyers.

Fords really are built tough!
I bought my vehicle new in 2010 and it has been a very reliable car for the last 10 years. I have traveled cross country with it many times and, not only does it function great in various weather conditions, but it also gets fantastic fuel mileage. I am starting to have a few issues pop up these days, like dead battery, spark plugs, etc, but I just chalk it up to old age and normal wear and tear.

I love the design, it is really economic on gas, even do is a small SUV it is really specious, you can fit a lot of thing in the trunk and the rails on the top help out a lot when you are moving the only thing I had problems with was that the fuel inject crack and it gave me some problems but it was an easy fix.

It has a button that changes the color of the low lighting.
Spacious room in the back row seating, huge trunk space, big enough to feel like an SUV yet small enough to navigate into tight parking spaces and through cities and traffic. Ford escape - excellent travel SUV for camping and long haul trips.
This vehicle has gotten a lot of wear and tear over the last 9 years. At least once a year we drive round trip from western Washington to northern Idaho, an almost 700 mile trip. It has been a very reliable work horse carrying tools, lumber and camping equipment back and forth every summer. It performs well in the snow as well, handling mountain pass travel with all wheel drive no need for chains.

A great running, good size SUV that our family loves! Our ford escape!
We bought our 2011 ford escape used in February 2019. It had around 90,000 miles on it. The only problem we've ever had a belt broke on my way to take my husband to work. I was able to get to a parking lot with no power steering and it barely running. A quick trip o'reilly's to get a belt, and a few minutes of common sense... Fixed! Never had another issue and it now has over 160,000 miles on it. Runs great, plenty of power, excellent in snow and mud, good gas mileage. Theres also plenty of room for my two boys! I really like our escape!
accountCircle LaJenna S on May 7, 2021
Ol’reliable with little tendencies.
Transmission is starting to slip, but it is been 3 years that feels like a long time enough without any problems. Very comfy for a first car and trustworthy. The engine light did come on often without anything being wrong, as well as the light saying check fuel fill inlet but it wasn't open and nothing was in there.

Little annoyances but overall works.
Sun glares on the shifter and is blinding while driving. The chrome finish on the door handles is peeling and is sharp and cuts fingers when you go to open the door. Do not like that fords wipers run an extra time after they are done cycling. Space is fine. Like how the back seats fold down.

Overall great car! Great for moms!
The best car I have ever had!! Has lasted a long time with minor problems. Gas is usually good if you keep it above half a tank at all times. Great for road trips and very spacious. Although I cannot figure out how to turn the limited volume off the radio is still pretty fair for how loud it goes up.

Low maintenance, smooth and reliable ride!
I have kept up with all the routine maintenance and have had little to no issues. In the 5+ years I have owned it, apart from natural wear on it (tires, brakes, etc) I have only ever had to take it in once for an exhaust issue. Rides smooth, great in the snow. Gas mileage has gone down a bit over the last year but is still over 20 miles/gallon. The ability to put down the back seat and have extra cargo space is a plus. Mine does not have a top rack or the tow package, but having those options is really nice. Overall a great vehicle. Will probably keep for another year or so until I am ready to get a new vehicle!

There's good and bad in autos.
My escape rides and drives smooth. It has room for storage and leg space. It holds 5 people. The back seats lay down for more space to haul things. For an 4x4 SUV, it gets good gas mileage. Its automatic and has good seats ro ride in. Issues include the air and heat only blows on high, something with the air conditioner only getting cold occasionally. I've had issues with the motor and had to put another one in. I still like ford and prefer the autos made by them.

2011 Ford Escape is a great SUV!
When I am in traffic and it is stop and go, there are times my SUV will have a "hiccup" when I accelerate and it feels like it is going to stall. I just recently had an oil change so I do not feel like that is the issue. Unfortunately, I do not have money right now to get this checked out.

My vehicle has 4wd and typically is great in bad weather. It has the sync and sun package which was pretty high end when I bought it almost 10 years ago. I wish it had a garage door opener built in. Like: not too big, decent pick up, easy viewing all around car.... Dislike: seats a bit uncomfortable for long trips, trunk not big enough for family, back seat can't really fit 3 well..

The ford escape- best car for life.
The 2011 ford escape is the best car I have ever owned! I love that I am able to utilize safety features such as no-hands calling and assist. I also love the Sirius XM and Bluetooth capabilities- no more scrolling the FM radio on long car trips. There is lots of space and storage- this is the perfect car for traveling and everyday use.

Perfect for your basic needs and comfort.
It is very reliable as long as you keep up on yearly maintenance. I have only had to change the air filter twice and the ac is wonderful. It has a perfect amount of space for me and I do not have to worry about it breaking down. I love how comfortable the seats are.

Great vehicle, comfortable, reliable.
Love my treacle. I have had no issues. Only routine maintenance done. Regular oil changes, new tires and brakes. Has been great for road trips as well as every day running around town and to work. Have driven the newer escape and do not find it to be as comfortable as my older one. Few more options on newer ones but nothing that I miss having.

Ford escape - reliable and trustworthy year in and year out.
I have nothing but great things to say about my ford escape. It is probably be the best purchase I have made in the last 10 years. It is reliable, sturdy, and has really been hassle-free. My ford gets great mileage and even at 9 years old looks really great. I love my heated seats. The ac works quickly and is effective. The car is roomy, but not super big. Perfect for me or for carting my kids to sports and activities.

The back storage area is large and great for storing my dog crate.
Comfortable seating with plenty of leg space. Cooling and heating works very well. Gas mileage is also great. No current issues. It is not very fast but it also has a governor on it. Does not cost much to fill up on gas. My dog loves to ride in the passenger seat.
