2015 Ford Escape Review: A Comfortable, Attractive & Peppy Compact SUV

Alex Showalter
Oct 11, 2021

The 2015 Ford Escape is available used from $11,065 to $17,236. It’s one of the most affordable compact SUVs on the market. The upgraded 2.0L engine makes it peppy to drive, and the Sync infotainment system gives it a modern feel inside.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The 2015 Ford Escape offers excellent value. The 2.0L powertrain gives it more power than most of the competition, and it lasts a very long time.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are some known problems with the transfer case on the AWD model. It doesn’t have the latest safety technology, and the base engine feels underpowered.
checkCircleAlternativeBold The Bottom Line
The Escape is a good budget compact SUV. It offers excellent exterior styling and above-average reliability, which makes it worth considering.

2015 Ford Escape: Quick Overview

  • The 2015 Ford Escape scores well across the board in reliability and should have no problem lasting a long time. You can find them used for $11,065 to $17,236. The best model is the Titanium trim with the technology package.
  • Three different engine options are offered in the Escape. The 2.0L being the most powerful, while the 1.6L is the most fuel-efficient. It has transfer case problems in the AWD model.
  • The Escape scores well for fuel efficiency and ranks third among all compact SUVs. Owners report the base 2.5L and 1.6L engines feel sluggish on the road.
  • For 2015, there were three trim levels offered with the Escape. The Escape scored lower than average in safety tests from both the NHTSA and IIHS.
  • The 2015 Escape does a lot of things very well, but there are a few that do things better. The Escape winds up in the middle of the list in the competitive compact SUV market.

Ford is my new favorite car brand.
This car is better than any other car I have bought. This was my first Ford car and I have been missing out. The car is very reliable unlike my last BMW. The gas mileage is great and it comes with colors that I really like. I have had almost no problems with this car!! It has a lot of storage place for my many water bottles and lots of plugs to charge my devices. The leather is very comfortable and easy to clean. I love this car so much and cannot recommend enough.

Excellent Zippy Car that fits my needs!
It is a sporty small suv that has ample storage space. Not a lot of legroom in the back seat. I have put 50,000 miles on this car and absolutely love it!

The vehicle has plenty of room for a SUV. It handles very well.
I love the size of the Escape. It is good on gas mileage, and the ride is very smooth.

Comfortable; looks great; great mileage and very functional!
It has been pretty reliable. Sometimes there are glitches in the sync system and/or entertainment center. I love the big dash and the roomy interior. I use mine with the back seats down. My husband and our two dogs and I love it for road trips and vacations. It gets great mileage and is very comfortable.

I enjoy cloth like seats because even in the heat, my legs do not stick or burn.
I love the size of my car. I do not think it is too big or too small either. The trunk it a good size and so is the backseat. I wish mine had heated seats or that the heat/ac filled up my whole car faster than it does. Other than that I love my car. I would highly recommend getting a ford escape!

It's a comfortable ride and has a roomy interior. Good for groups of people.
I like the upgraded technology, in particular, the backup camera. I like the roomy interior. I don't dislike anything about the car. I am opposed to the pricey service charges charged by the dealership.

Very comfortable, smooth, reliable vehicle with great gas mileage.
I love my Ford Escape. I bought it new, I have owned it for 3 years now and have had very few problems (had to get new tires, brakes and fix a broken windshield) all of which are normal/expected repairs. It is very comfortable and I love the computer system which hooks up to my phone. I purchased the se with leather interior and heated seats which is one of my favorite upgrades in the winter.
accountCircle Natalie S
The most important thing about my Escape is that it's the perfect size - Still a compact but feels like an SUV. Great for travel and for my busy lifestyle.
I love that my Escape isn't too big, but I can fit so much into it when traveling. It has flex fuel, so I get good mileage. It drives really smoothly and let's me know when I need any maintenance. It's so convenient!

Battery corrosion extreme vehicle damage
My mother just bought 2015 Ford escape a few months ago from dealership. For a week now shes been without it due to corroded battery. She took it to a battery shop and mechanic wouldn't touch it due to liability issues. The battery is so far back and has so many parts to be taken off just to see the battery. Bow she is paying over $700 just for a battery and repairs the corrosion caused. I am not a mechanic but my father was. I dont ever remember while he showed me how to work on vehicles corrosion of this nature happening in a matter of a few months causing this much damage to her car that my mom is liable. Lithium Ford not offering answers or help to my mother only a quote and bill. Smh. Do not recommend Ford vehicles or Ford customer services.

Totally Unreliable After 80K Miles - Money Pit
I have a 2015 Ford Escape - bought brand new - that now has 87K miles. I've been very good with doing routine maintenance on the vehicle. I recently experienced a total transmission failure (the vehicle is 5 years old), which cost $6,000 to repair. The car is now also exhibiting other issues, where it shakes uncontrollably in reverse with cylinder misfires. I've already sunk $1K into this new issue (on top of the transmission) with no end in sight. If you own a Ford Escape in good condition, I highly recommend you get rid of it ASAP before it starts falling apart around you... It's ridiculous this car doesn't even last long enough to pay off the loan. I will never buy another Ford car again. There was a successful class action against Ford Fusion and Fiesta transmissions, and I'm hoping the Escape's issues aren't far behind.

2.0 Motor needed replaced
After 5 years, 117,000 klm’s, small town driven, Ford Maintained every 8,000 km, the motor died, needing replacement. This is very disturbing. This was my first new car so I didn’t have to do any of this. After telling others, I found out more and more Escapes need motors replaced, from 7,000 km and up. Not happy with Ford at all.

The steering wheel is very big to hold onto and the gas pedal is very small easy to slip off of while driving

Let the buyer beware of this car.
This car has had a lot of repair issues including 6 quarts of oil that went missing and caused the engine to seize. If it was a leak, we should have see evidence of a oil leak. Engine was spotless and the mechanic went over it looking for where the oil leaked out.
accountCircle Julie M
Remember to check the oil often.
Changed the oil in this car and blew the engine. Mechanic cannot figure out what happened to 6+ quarts of oil. I am never buying another Ford again.
accountCircle Lyric J
Cheaply made yet expensive.
The car is cheaply made, full of plastic, yet extremely expensive to repair. You have to get high grade oil changes or you are screwed. If you need a new battery, you have to take off 2 parts under the hood and the windshield wipers. Very inconvenient, even to jump. And jumper boxes do not work on the escapes, not the '15 at least.

Ford includes the 2015 Escape in two large recall campaigns. These are for doors opening unexpectedly because of faulty latches. Ford will replace these latches on affected vehicles for free.

Does the 2015 Ford Escape have Good Gas Mileage?

What Colors Does the 2015 Ford Escape Come in?

How Safe is the 2015 Ford Escape?

The Ford Escape does not score the highest in overall safety for 2015. The NHTSA gave it a four-star crash test rating. This includes a four-star rating for frontal crash, five-star for side crash, and 4-star for rollover. The NHTSA mentions the standard backup camera helps the Escape, but it is missing some of the latest safety technology.

The IIHS wound up giving the 2015 Ford Escape a poor rating on frontal crash test ratings for both the driver and passenger sides. It also scored poorly in the overall evaluation and structure. This leads to the vehicle also getting a poor rating for hip and thigh injuries in the event of an accident.

How Does the 2015 Ford Escape Compare to Other SUVs?

The 2015 Ford Escape scores near the middle of the pack in the crowded compact SUV market. Where the Escape scores well are with the overall driving feel and dynamics. It also is a better budget option compared to some of the competition. One of the biggest competitors to the Escape is Toyota’s RAV4. The RAV4 has more passenger and cargo room, but the interior has lower-quality materials compared to the Ford. The Ford also offers a bit more horsepower if you upgrade to the 2.0L engine.

Another competitor for the Escape is the Subaru Forester. More expensive than the Escape, but all-wheel-drive comes standard on it. Subaru’s Eyesight technology and higher crash test ratings help it beat the Escape in safety. These two are very close to each other in performance, but the Subaru barely beats it out. Overall, the Subaru is the better vehicle.

2015 ford escape bought used, multiple issues.
I have only had my 2015 ford escape for about 8 months. I bought it used with 65,000 miles on it. In terms of comfort and features, it is excellent. However, I have had a considerable amount of issues with the car in the 8 months I have had it; rotors were replaced, a bad solenoid was causing the shifting to jerk, the entire front windshield had to be replaced because it was allowing rain water to seep in and flood the interior of the car. All of this was fixed under warranty in the first three months by the dealer. Recently, I have been getting check motor lights for an issue with a fuel sensor. Upon having that replaced, it was discovered the gas tank was leaking and there was a pin sized hole in the tank. Last week the check engine light returned and when taken to the auto shop, was told the coolant bypass valve needed to be replaced.

2015 Ford Escape. A comfortable, functional family car.
Our Ford Escape is a good, versatile car. I use it as my daily car and I like that it sits up high like an SUV but handles like a car. The base model, which I have, fits a car seat in the back with room for our dog to sit comfortably as well. I like that the back seats fold flat for storage or hauling a lot of material. We use it for our trips to the hardware store. It comes with a backup camera which is helpful in crowded places or really any time you are backing up. The SYNC feature allows you to speak hands free on the phone, connect your phone to listen to music, or use a maps app to get directions. Hands free is especially nice since they passed the hands free law. The 2015 Ford Escape is not too big that you can't street park or park in ramps. I have done both comfortably and easily. Overall, it has been a great car for us.

2015 ford escape, the total package.
There was an issue with the automatic transmission not shifting about a month after buying it. Called the dealership and it was repaired under warranty. Right now there is a manufacturer's recall on a part. I haven't called the dealership yet but ford covers the cost of that repair. I love storing up higher than most cars just wish it say a bit higher like an f250. I am pretty technologically savvy it has not been difficult figuring out the touch screen control pattern. The dual zone climate control is great. Passengers can set their own without using the touch screen. Lots of room in the back seat. I like the extra cup holders in the door compartment. Perfect for a bottle of water. Plenty of USB ports and 12v plugs. Easy to close and open the rear gate. Cannot wait to see how it handles while towing.

Reliable, Functional, Safe and Fun to Drive
I‘ve had my 2015FE Titanium 2.0L CUV for 9 years. It has 120k miles. I was rear-ended once, with minimal damage while the other car at fault was totaled. More importantly, it has saved my skin numerous times when I failed to notice a curve, hydroplaned and drove in horrible snow conditions. I’ve maintained it properly, which helps. Yes, I’ve had to replace brakes and tires and have other work done but nothing shocking. My model has had almost no recalls and none serious. She drives as well today as she did 9 years ago. The cargo area has helped me move twice and is enough for Spring gardening, large Christmas trees and everything in between. She gets decent gas andis sporty enough to enjoy. I’d buy again in a heartbeat.

The 2015 Ford Escape does not have built in navigation.
The 2015 Ford Escape is one of the most smooth rides I have ever had in a car. Comfortable seats. Quiet cabin. This car has fantastic fuel economy for a SUV type car. The only feature I do not like so far is that it does not have a built in navigation system into the main screen console. So, I have to use the GPS on my smartphone to get me everywhere, which can be very frustrating and dangerous at times. I also do not like the touch screen features on the center console. They are difficult to get to and if you need to make any selections or changes while driving, this can make your ride very dangerous. However, the voice commands are very helpful in these situations.

Opinion of 2015 ford escape.
Has been very reliable. Have 105,000 miles on it. Have replaced rear brakes, tires and windshield but have had no trouble. I wish the cargo area was a little wider. I had a 2010 escape and my golf clubs fit nicely across the back. My 2015 model does not accommodate clubs with being corner to corner in the back. Straight highway driving delivers 30+ mpg. City driving about 26 mpg. Good sound system. CD player never used and unnecessary. Bluetooth connection works well.

I very much enjoy the ford escape. I have the 2015 titanium model with the entertainment system. The touchscreen entertainment system is quick and easy for access, and I love the size of it! . The car has a full length sunroof that allows all passengers to enjoy, but I wish the roof would open all the way rather than just 1/3 of the way. I have had no problems with my 2015 ford escape se. The fabric seats are very comfortable and breathable for hot Arizona summers. The radio has many different media options which I love, and it is also a touch screen. The inside of the car looks very sleek. Issues owning a 2015 ford escape se.
I have had numerous recalls and maintenance issues with this vehicle. The worst of the bunch is the wastegate on the turbo got broke, so a head gasket became damaged allowing water into the system causing overheating and oil burn off. Also, the rear tires seem to wear down fairly quickly on the inner side. No explanation for that but design flaw since it is continued after an alignment.

Absolutely love all the comfort settings. Powered and heated seats. So much room for cargo and passengers. Interior is very sleek with than leather. The moonroof really adds to the overall luxury of the car. Also has ambient lighting which makes can change the overall mood while inside the car.

Good vehicle for the price.
It drives well and is a fast car with a good electronic system. The Bluetooth systems works great. But there is little room to set your stuff anywhere in the car, like cups and other items. Also the brakes have had issues. We’ve had to had them fixed twice.

Very sleek and fun to drive.
Drives very smoothly. Sleek design. Great gas mileage. Has Bluetooth. Has nice rims. Very comfortable seating. Very spacious hatchback. Love the exterior metallic gray color and the gray and black interior. The rear camera is a lifesaver. Rear seats fold down for easy transport of large items.

Ford escape: summary and reasons to get it.
I have had my 2015 ford escape since 2016 and I have loved it since. It is a very reliable car. I love the sport option it has. You can go as fast as you want. It is fuel efficient; it takes less than $30 to full it up. It has a backup camera that really helps and it let's you know if you are too close to anything behind the car. The Bluetooth feature lets you connect your phone so you can enjoy your own music and when you get a call, it goes through the car so you do not have to hold your phone in your hands to answer calls. You can also set up the car so you can see who sends you a message and who's calling you. The seats are very comfortable. I haven't had too much problems with it, but not too long ago, after four years of owning it, I have had to change the brakes, the battery and the radiator. It is still great as I didn't have too many issues with it throughout the years, I only changed the tires and did the regular maintenance. Overall, I really like it and recommend it.

The ford escape is a comfortable vehicle.
I love the reliability of my escape and how it is easy to get into. It is a vehicle that I can drive comfortably. However, once the vehicle hits about 85,000, there appears to be some sluggish movement among the transmission despite proper maintenance.

Issues with gas tank and paint.
Something with the gas tank is not working correctly. It will not start the first time after I get gas then it will die when I am driving it out of nowhere. The paint on the hatch is currently fading off but I have had the car for a while. Also the rpm’s rev when I am sitting at a red light out of nowhere.

The car is very safe, and performs well.
I really love my car. There are a few things that I wish it did include, such as heat seats or a sunroof that are only available in the bigger packages. The car has always been really safe and I haven't had any issues performance wise, other than some issues with the radio turning off occasionally, but I think that is specific to my car.
accountCircle Calder T on June 8, 2021
My vehicle is a reliable, comfortable, and high tech every day car.
The 2015 ford escape is a comfortable and reliable vehicle. The only issue I have encountered is that the battery and oil pan/filter are difficult to access and require specialized tools to change. Other than that, the performance is what you would expect from a crossover suv. It has several tech features including a backup camera and a ford sync entertainment system, which has operated with zero issues.
accountCircle Lindsay B on June 7, 2021
My vehicle is a 2015 ford escape se. It drives amazingly easily.
Have not experienced any problems. Performs amazingly. 4-wheel drive is awesome! Very reliable car. It was my first car I have ever had, and I couldn't have asked for a better car! Super comfortable to drive and ride in. Some great features including backup camera and Bluetooth.

My vehicle is a silver ford escape with an all black comfortable interior.
The ford escape is a quality sedan with comfortable interior and great driving ability. It includes Bluetooth technology along with a great sound system. It is a perfect size for someone with moderate space needs and a love for SUVs. The car provides a safe feeling with sport gear when needed.

Backup camera,Running lights
I’m on my 3rd running light. Drivers side first, passenger side next, passenger side again. $70-$80 each repair. Wheel has to be removed and part of inner wheel well. Backup camera issue 90% of the time image is upside down, blank, or a service message comes on says take it to the dealer. Cost est. Is $400-$500. Only car I’ve ever heard of that has camera issues.

Best car for college students.
In college, having a reliable car is ideal. I am constantly driving back and forth from my college town to where I am from. The ford escape is such a reliable car and I never have to worry about something going wrong. It is easy to drive and the perfect size. It is not too big or too small and I can easily fit most of my stuff when I go back home for breaks.
accountCircle Lem B on May 23, 2021
A lot of car for the size.
2.0 ecoboost engine has good power and decent torque. Lots of legroom and headroom in the front. Back seat doesn't have a lot of legroom if there are tall people in the front. Cargo space is bigger than it appears. AWD system is solid and fracking is good. Handling is good for a SUV.

Great. I like the leather heated seats and all wheel drive.
My car is great. It is a good size and has leather seats. Heated front seats. It has digital dashboard. I like it, but sometimes the voice recognition does not always work. It is a small SUV, it can fit two car seats and rides nicely. I would recommend.

Likes and dislikes of my focus.
Like my car. It has specialized wheels. Does not get great mileage I love my sunroof, it is a larger size. I love the child safety locks for children in the backseat like the foot swipe to have no hands trunk opener. There is ample leg room. I love my seat warmers, wish all seats could have that not just the front ones.

I love my car. Since I have purchased it I really haven't had any issues. It is fuel efficient and had good safety rating. It has a 6 disc CD player it is blue and drives very comfortably. It is also very roomy and spacious with a large trunk area. It is an overall great vehicle.

Ford escape: perfect for a new mom!
I have only had this vehicle for a short time but I absolutely love it! It is super comfortable and has just enough room for myself, my husband and our baby to not be cramped. Her car seat does not take up a lot of room in the vehicle. I also love the auto start so that I can warm up/cool down the car for my baby. The only issue I have so far is that the trunk is not as big as I thought it would be, my baby’s stroller takes up almost the entire trunk but I can deal with that for the other features of the car.

2015 Ford Escape
Bought new, had it back 3 times with noise in rear when backing up, then in 2017 had solenoid fluid in transmission fixed, 2021 new transmission 5,200 dollars. It has 124,000. Been a problem since it was new

It has a backup camera to allow you to safely pull out.
I don't like how the car drives in the snow. I need. Better car that will not slip and slide in the wintertime. I also want a car like a Subaru forester or Toyota rav4 with better reviews. It performa ok and runs it works for me but my next car I would purchase the Subaru or Toyota.
accountCircle Patrick A on April 28, 2021
It drives great, and has excellent maneuverability.
It is not a bad little sports utility vehicle by any stretch but there are some things it is lacking. I wish it had all wheel drive. None of the air conditioning ducts really point in a good direction to the people who are within the vehicle. I have also seen a lot of these heads being pulled off do to carbon build up.

Silver SUV, 2 wheel drive.
Great car! I drive my family around a lot and feel safe in this car. Fuel mileage is decent if you do not gun it all the time. Transmission sticks a bit when first started, maybe that is just my car. Love my ford escape otherwise. I bought it used, not new by the way.

Titanium the best escape suv.
Love my 2015 ford escape titanium. It runs really well and I've never had any problems. It is been driven in city as long road trips. I have leather seats that are heated. It is amazing during cold weather. It also has a back up camera which is really great, particularly in close parking lots. My cars also lets me know if am to close to someone or they are too close to me on the road. I have a vision issue with my right eye so there’s a light that goes on if someone is in my blind spot. It is very beneficial when changing lanes on the freeway.

Owned two ford escapes in a row.
Very comfortable and reliable vehicle. The ramp-up and gas mileage are good compared to other SUVs I have driven. The only issues I have had are with brakes and rotors—but that is might be something more on my end than on the car’s end. I recommend the titanium over other trims.

Ford escape opinion and review.
Love my vehicle on road trips, it does a great job low maintenance gas is cheaper you just need to keep up with routine oil changes and you are good to go, it is reliable and cost efficient and a nice family car, it has a lot of space inside and drives nice.

Space enough for two bikes!!
This car has been very reliable the last few years I have had it. Gets decent gas mileage but the best feature by far is the space. Tons of room, and large trunk space- I put 2 bicycles in the back without any problem. The backup camera is a great feature and I love that I can connect my phone.

Good car, some work after years of driving.
This vehicle is absolutely great in the snow. While it does classify as an svu, I do wish it was a little bigger, however I can fit two great danes and all of their belongs in the vehicle with no problem. Up until recently I have had any issues with my car. This year, five years after purchasing I did have an issue and had to replace the transmission. Overall this car is great!

It's easy for a heavier set person to drive, plenty of room in drivers seat.
Rides good, roomy, does have loud tire noise, plenty of driver room, small SUV, cannot haul a lot, wish it had a tow package, very comfortable to drive, can hold 5 people with a little crowdedness in back seat, seats fold one in order to haul bigger items,

Transmission acts strange.
After a few years of driving the vehicle, I have noticed that my transmission seems to delay and jolt especially while using cruise control. The noise level of the car has also increased over time. The vehicle is great for maneuvering and you can pack a lot of items in the back.

This is a good vehicle it has some speed but also room for the pups.
Good car, I have some electrical problems with the ac but just have to restart the car and it works fine. The handle on the passenger door broke off. I put seat covers and rubber mats to protect the car and it looks relatively new except the broken handle.

Reliable SUV that I would recommend to anyone looking for good quality vehicle.
My escape is a smooth ride. I have the dual sunroof & GPS which I love. Heated seats are great and work well. Only negative that I can think of is the motion sensor under the tailgate does not always work to lift the tailgate hands free. Other than that I love my escape.

Feel the boost with a ford escape.
It is really reliable. I bought it a year old. It is fun and convenient and you can take it anywhere. Great on gas and the turbo makes it move pretty quickly. It is a fun car and great for long trips or errands. I have not had any serious problems besides the normal maintenance. It is my favorite car I have ever owned.

Best SUV I have owned. Not too large or too small.
The vehicle is very comfortable. All accessories are amazing and I love the backup camera. Only thing I would change is the color. The seats fold down to make so much room and I love the fact there’s a windshield wiper on the back window. And the driver's seat is very space and comfortable.

Great mileage and perfect for a cold climate.
There is some rattling by wheel. There is good gas mileage considering it is an SUV. I like how much space there is especially in the back seat. I love the heated steering wheel and heated seats. They warm up very quickly in the winter. I enjoy the most the all wheel drive considering I live in a cold climate with lots of snow.

Little blue SUV that could.
It is a reliable midsize SUV(crossover). It is not the fanciest car on the market but it is spacious and gets the job done. It fits two car seats without a problem. The back gives you a lot of room for hauling and the seats go down very easily to make more hauling space.

Very comfortable even on long trips, loaded with creature comforts and great on gas. The only time it was ever serviced other than routine maintenance was for a factory campaign change which was handled during a scheduled service visit.
accountCircle Stuart S on March 28, 2021
Surprisingly nice ride, especially for the money.
It rides incredibly smooth on almost any terrain. The handling and suspension is top notch. The basics, heating air and radio are all standard but don't leave me wanting. The throttle response does leave something to be desired but, the pick up never does. Could be a bit more leg room, but I am a bigger guy. Trunk space is adequate and my boys can fit in the back seat comfortably even with their car seats. All in all I recommend it to my friends all the time, and will continue to do so.
