Alex Showalter
Nov 16, 2021

The 2016 Ford Escape is an affordable SUV with a price range of $14,998 to $20,638. It’s cheaper than most other compact SUVs, but mechanical issues make it a more expensive choice for the long-term.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The Escape has a comfortable interior with more luxurious materials than its competitors, it’s quieter than other compact SUVs, and the technology improvements are easy to use and good for its class.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Performance is weak with the base engine. There are more transmission problems than other model years, and it has less cargo space than some competitors.

  • New features for the 2016 Ford Escape include an updated infotainment system with SYNC 3, chrome package on the SE model, and new paint colors.
  • Reliability ratings are above average, according to J.D. Power. Overall, it has more problems than the 2015 and 2017 models, making those a better choice.

This vehicle is dependable and economical to operate
Comfortable to drive and decent gas mileage along with plenty of room for my dog was important to me. It is dependable. I love the color. The backup camera has been a wonderful addition
accountCircle Mary P
It lasts forever and looks the same despite stains on interior.
Very comfortable to drive. Good cargo size. Sporty features that are easy to use. Good craftsmanship. Quality drive. Only downside is that the price is a lot of money.

Overall the ford escape is very good.
Overall I am very satisfied with this vehicle. The escape has adequate cargo space for my needs and room for five people. The rear seats fold down for additional cargo space when I need more space which is a great feature. The only issue I have had with this vehicle is the battery needed replaced after 3 years which is significantly less than typical battery life in a vehicle.
accountCircle Sarai F
My vehicle is very convenient and very comfortable.
I have had barely any issues with my ford escape. It has amazing air conditioning that is able to cool very quickly, especially during those hot summer days. It also has a rapid heater for those cool winter days. The Bluetooth sound system is absolutely amazing. It makes driving very convenient because instead of being on your phone while driving, it is all connected to the radio. You can play your own music, answer calls, and there is a voice demand option. The regular radio is also very good and comes with many options as well. There are 5 seats and everything is spaced out evenly. It is very comfortable for road trips and long drives. The only small issue I had was the battery, however I bought it used therefore it was time for a battery change either way. But once the battery was changed it smooth sailing. I also enjoy that it has a camera in the back to let you know if you are close to hitting anything and gives you full back view. There is also a feature in the car that tells you if you have a broken light, if you have low tire pressure, if you need to change your oil, and any other things the car may be experiencing. All in all I love this car and it is very suitable for a first or fourth car.

My Ford Escape is one of the best selling vehicles available.
I like the fuel economy of my Escape, My Escape is four wheel drive which is good for winter where I live. My Escape is comfortable inside and sleek on the outside. I have no complaints of my car

Great car, great features at a reasonable price!
This has been a great car. Other than routine maintenance, I have had no problems with this car. It has great features and the options on my model are great. The sound system and interior are the two top areas I love about this car. It is also a very good car for driving in the winter weather where we live.

My likes and dislikes of my 2016 Ford Escape.
Very comfortable. Great lighting, everything functions as it should. Gas mileage not great. Handles well in wet weather. Tells you how many miles left on gas that's in the gas tank. Does not have cup holders in the back passenger seat. Car overall a nice family vehicle.

I love the appearance, the space, the way it drives, remote start, the screen for radio/air control, leather seats, backup camera.

It's unreliable and not worth the money. There has been many recalls on it as well.
We bought this care new and have had nothing but problems with it. It has broken down 3 times and the radio stopped working. I would never recommend this car to anyone.

Transmission issues
I have had issues with transmission since I bought the car and Ford doesnt know how to fix it. Three years later I'm paying for a car that wontmove due to transmission issues. Ford fix yalls mistake and fugure out how to fix it.recall recall recall is what needs to happen.

Computer malfunctions. It rides rough. Doesn't block outside noises. Too small. Needs more rear a/c vents
I hate my car. I regret ever buying it. The computer screen that controls the radio is always malfunctioning. The rear of the vehicle doesn't have enough vents for passengers and they need their own controls. The seat belts lock up before you can extend them enough. It ride roughs and doesn't block out road sounds

Piece of c**p
Lots of road noise, not enough vents in back for kids and animals, car jolts when switching out of 1st even though it’s an automatic, sync won’t work anymore, electrical issues that drains the battery all the time even with fully charged batteries in it, gas mileage is good but could be better for its size. I’ve had it 2 years and it’s been in the garage 3 times. I do like the amount of space and height of the car. But I regret purchasing it.

2016 Ford Escape don't waste your time
Nothing is wrong with the car. It's just too small for me and my family. I've regretted buying it since day one. It's very good on gas..that's the best thing I can say about it. No real features to brag about besides rear backup camera, power windows, anti lock brakes, controls on the steering wheel.

Not happy with vehicle nor cost associated with repairs on simple issues.
Doesn't have good traction control multiple mechanical issues. I have never had a car that ran into so many issues. When replacing the battery I had to take it to the shop for a simple battery replacement and the cost was outrageous due to location of battery.

What Problems Does the 2016 Ford Escape Have?

The 2016 Ford Escape has more problems than the 2015 and 2017 model years. It also has more complaints compared to other compact SUVs. The 2016 Ford Escape troubles include transmission failure and costly engine replacement.

Transmission problems are common, with owners reporting shuddering while driving. Shuddering happens when the transmission slips while driving, and it can lead to complete transmission failure. If the transmission fails it will need to be replaced, costing over $3,000 in some cases.

Radio and infotainment system problems are also mentioned by owners. The source of the problem can be anything from a bad antenna, out-of-date software, to syncing issues. It’s best to let a shop take a look at it if your radio is failing.

Engine problems, including an engine warning light, are also brought up by Escape owners. There are reports of turbos failing which will cause an engine light, and a loss of power. If you have a check engine light, it’s a good idea to inspect the vehicle with an OBD II scan tool to find the source of the problem.

There is one recall affecting the 2016 Escape., for the driver’s knee airbag inflator, which may not inflate. Ford will replace it free in affected vehicles.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2016 Ford Escape trim levels are limited, but the three trims offer many add-on packages. Depreciation is average for its class, losing about 40% of its value in the first five years of ownership.

  • S is the entry-level model with 17-inch steel wheels, cloth seating, a telescoping steering wheel, rear-view camera, and blind spot monitoring.
  • SE is in the middle of the lineup and has 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, an eight-way power driver’s seat, satellite radio, and an upgraded 1.6L turbocharged engine.
  • Titanium is the flagship model with 18-inch wheels, leather seating, a 10-way adjustable power driver’s seat, a power liftgate, and a 10-speaker Sony stereo system.

accountCircle Jacquie M

Yes it is very reliable. Starts right up every time and rides smooth. Has a bit of horsepower engine too and has no issues.

How Does the 2016 Ford Escape Compare to Other SUVs?

The 2016 Escape ranks 12th out of 26 compact SUVs based on owner reviews. At the top of the list is the Mini Countryman, which is more expensive than the Escape. Where the Mini wins out is with more technology, better interior materials, and a sportier, more nimble driving experience. Reliability ratings are similar, but the higher-end Escape models have a more powerful engine. The two SUVs compete for different buyers, so it comes down to what you’re looking for in an SUV. The Escape is easier to live with, but the Mini is more unique.

Another competitor is the Honda CR-V, which is also more expensive than the Escape. Honda wins with better reliability ratings, and more cargo space than the Ford. Where the Escape comes out ahead is with a more refined and luxurious interior. Technology is similar between the two SUVs, but owners like the SYNC 3 system found on the higher-end Escape models. The CR-V is a better choice for long-term ownership since it has fewer mechanical issues.

Mr.
When the Covid crisis hit my job position was eliminated. I had a severe infection 7 months prior the put me in the hospital for a week. So when covid hit our area my wife said ( stay home for now). Well a year later I had to get out and do something. At the time we had a 2011 Chevy Avalanche , yea spoiled much. Anyway I started doing delivery and turns out I really enjoy it. Then with almost 200,000 miles my truck was having too many issues so time to trade it in. I found a 2016 Escape with only 48,000 miles, an SE 2.0 turbo and 4x4. The dealer gave us a really good deal and turns out this Suv is perfect for what I do. Plenty of power, drives great. I average around 200 miles a day on this car. My only complaint is not having a power lift gate. We live in north central Arkansas so you can imagine I'm driving on allot of bad county roads. Having the smart 4x4 system helps. All that being said my Escape is averaging 22.3 MPG. Not bad for the conditions I drive. On one road trip to Springfield Mo. I was getting 33.7 MPG. I'm very happy with the Escape. With the amount of miles I drive it will only be 2 or 3 years and will be time to trade in. I will definitley be looking at another Escape.

2016 Ford Escape transmission
The transmission died without any warning with only 85,000 miles No warnings just stopped shifting as I was driving. This seems to be a very common occurrence with this vehicle. Buyer beware. Shame on Ford.

Pros and cons of my ford escape.
I love my vehicle! It fits my style/personality! I am not too big into the newest or high tech features and it has just enough to satisfy me. The only thing I wish I got would be heated seats. It runs perfect and never have any mechanical problems, just normal care if brakes, rotors, oil changes etc. The only complaint I have is the seats are not comfortable for hour long rides. Just for me going around town to work, etc. Is fine but a trip out of town they are not comfortable, manageable through. They are not the worst seats I have sat in I can admit that and also if your looking for a spacious family vehicle I wouldn't go with mine because it is enough for me and my fiance or if we have to haul people in it but to be a full time family vehicle would not be the best.

Great smaller SUV with four wheel drive.
Very reliable and comfortable for both the driver and passengers. Only issues—needs storage for phones and would like larger cargo space but is still good for a smaller SUV. The sync system is improved over the older one I had in my Fusion. The Bluetooth speaker placement is also improved.

Loving the radio and comfy seats!
I have had this car over a year and a half, and I love it. Very fuel efficient, love the radio and surround sound. I do wish the speakers allowed it to be louder. Seats are very comfortable. I would like heated seats, but not a deal breaker. The CD player is enjoyable and so is the touch screen navigator.

Comfy and drives well and has a lot of outlets for my phone to plug into which is awesome. It has really great gas mileage and is very roomy if you need to move bigger objects such as computer chairs, 2 seater couches, coffee table, and a recliner. Really great.

Irritating quirks on my 2016 ford escape.
I had to get a new transmission less than 1 year ago... It is now sticking again... Sometimes the a/c wont come out of the selected vent or stereo won't hook up to Bluetooth, the car has to be turned off' door opened, alarm activated, deactivated, and the door opened to reset.

I am thankful for the big trunk.
This vehicle has been very reliable for me. I have had no car issues, except for the fact I ran over some nails and had to get a new tire. But that was my own fault. I have loved this car and I hope it last as long as it seems like it will. I feel as if it would be a wonderful car to have children with as well.

Escape titanium ecoboost comfort and performance.
Have had no problems, the seats are very comfortable and easy to adjust and can adjust the steering wheel. Love the ecoboost, gives the help needed to get on the highway sometimes. The best car for young professionals on the go!
I had a 2012 ford escape that lasted me 8 years with 0 problems (except for regular upkeep such as replacing tires, replaced ac condenser one time, etc.). When it was totaled in a car accident, I knew I wanted to get another ford escape because it was such a reliable car. I purchased a newer model, a 2016 escape titanium with low mileage. The inside is luxurious - leather seats, modern screen with Bluetooth and SiriusXM capabilities. Plus it has an enormous sunroof that stretches to the backseat. It is a push to start and you can start up the engine using the key fob which is great during the summer and you want the ac to get started. It gets excellent gas mileage as well. Overall a reliable, easy car.

Having fun times with the car.
Had something get weird with the acceleration just as the warranty was expiring. They 'fixed it', but they never even knew what was wrong in the first place. Other than that, it is been a great vehicle. I do wish it had heated seats, remote start, and a moonroof.

Good reliable vehicle, good on gas tons of room for cargo.
I like it lot of room just not enough console space and the vents are hard to attach a phone to clip on, I haven't had any problems with the vehicle since I purchased it, seats go completely down in the front. The Bluetooth on the other hand has a history of getting stuck on a phone call and have to turn the car off to reset it and to get radio back on or your apps.

Cool black ford escape vehicle.
It is a great car. It is a black ford escape. There are 8 seats. However, the middle seats are extremely small. The row of seats in the back have tight leg space. The row in the back can be removed for more space. I do like the car and how new it is. Since it is a 2016 it should last a few more years.

I have always found ford to be super reliable and it is the only car brand my dad buys from. Ford escape review- cute, but not functional.
I like how it looks- very luxurious. I also like the Bluetooth aspect. I do not like how it drives. It feels like the car is almost fighting the road when I drive it. The gas mileage is awful as well. I have to fill up the gas tank almost every week and it feels like it just eats the gas up without getting much use out of the car.

Escape titanium pleasant surprise.
The turbocharged 4 cylinder engine is impressively quick and responsive. It provides impressive power and fuel economy. The titanium trim package comes with nice features that include a solid sound system. Getting into a cool car during a Texas summer is fantastic thanks to the remote start option. One of my favorite things about this car is the ambient lighting, great for those long night drives. The cherry on top is the foot-activated liftgate, it is great when your hands are full.

A lot of small issues that go wrong with the vehicle. It's bad on snow and rain with keeping traction, likes to slide everywhere and hydroplane on the road when it rains. A little insight on the ford escape.
I believe the ford escapes roll is to provide a smooth driving vehicle with good mileage and fantastic accessibility, I have only had one problem with my ford escape and that is the motion detection on my keys that come with it, the keys have a habit to lock the car repeatedly once the keys are moved in any physical motion I believe there may have been some defect when I got it and I have tried finding out what the issues was with it by doing some research, but to no avail was I able to find a solution but this is such a minor problem that I have grown used to it other than that rare oddity the vehicle has great acceleration as well as breaks, to my knowledge the ford escape has fulfilled its roll perfectly in getting me to my destination without issues.

I bought my car about six months ago and I love it. I haven't had any issues with it so far. It is very comfortable and the different levels of heated seats are really nice for the days when I want a warm seat, but I do not want it super hot, and vise versa. Personally, I have gotten a lot of use out of the sun roof. I love having the nice flow of air without it blowing my hair everywhere like when I roll my window down. I have taken this car on many dirt roads and it handled really well on them.

I do not have any problems with my vehicle. It drives really well. The ac is not that good but that could also be because there is no aluminum in my car. I recommend this car to anybody that does not have much driving experience. It is small in space but also big enough for 5 people to be in.

Why you should buy an affordable and reliable ford escape.
I really like my ford escape. It is like a midsize SUV. It is very good on gas mileage. It can get up and go. I can easily drive 75 + miles per hour with no concerns. The interior is dark and the back seat can be let down which allows me to transport lots of things.

Overall the vehicle performs great! However a few details, the touch screen is a little off. Reaction can be a hit or miss when selecting options. The comfort is a little firm, but not bad. Reaction time to suddenly stopping or a quick turn is on point. The gas pedal is a sensitive. One small tap and that car will go! Does not take much. Smoother ride overall. There is a backup camera that is solid. Does wonders when trying to get out of a tight spot. Be weary of the tires that come with it, however. Depending on where you are buying from. Make sure to check that the tires are up to date.

The ford escape is perfect for families!
My escape has the perfect amount of room for my family of 4. It is a very comfortable ride. It is very dependable to take on long road trips. I love the sync feature, we can swap to anyone’s music that is connected! It is a smooth ride. It is very dependable, I have had it for 3 years now and it has not given me a problem! Nothing more than regular maintenance! I would highly recommend the escape to anyone who is considering a purchase!

My 2016 ford escape great on gas and low maintenance.
This has been a really great vehicle. Great on gas. I have had very few mechanical problems with it. Have only had regular maintenance issues like battery, etc. I was driving it at least 60 miles every work day and it rarely gave me problems. I would definitely buy another one.

Little small, but very reliable.
It is been pretty reliable in terms of a smaller SUV. The trunk space is nice, although a little short. Cannot fit my son's son's wheelchair inside very well. The front is a hit cramped, I feel the space between mine and the passenger's seat is not very wide. It does still run very well though, even after 4 years.

Super SUV for a super price and handles ability.
Handles well for a small SUV but could have a little more power. It blows back and forth in high winds and skids out a little on ice. On a positive note storage capacity is adequate and the fold down seats make it easy to expand. I would recommend 9 out of 10.

It drives smooth and fast and is very safe.
It is pretty strong because I drive a little rough and I haven't had any problems. The highest speed it can go up to is 114. It is really good with road trips. I love it, it is fast and it drives real smooth. It is a great car. If you have kids and your looking for a good and safe SUV this is a great car to have.

What I love most about this car is the turbocharged engine.
This car is an SUV but it drives like a car. It is very smooth, I haven't had any serious issues with it yet but I am anticipating some issues once I cross 100,000 miles on it just from what I have heard about ford vehicles. In my opinion, if you take care of your car and maintain it regularly, you shouldn't have too many issues.

Great family car for long distance travels.
It is spacious and great on gas for long distance travel, wish it was a little better off-road driving though. Handles like a car and my kids and dogs all can fit in and have enough space for themselves. It is easy to relax in the passenger side. Wish the cargo area was a little bigger as well.

Ruby red 2016 ford escape.
Extremely reliable, easy to fold back seats down, perfect size and cute! Enough room for 5 people, good for hauling medium sized items. Good gas mileage, tires are expensive, battery is almost impossible to get to. Love the color and the interior. Really a great value for the price.

Panoramic sunroof is worth every penny.
Love my car! It is super reliable and easy to drive, I feel like I have enough space buts it is also not overwhelming. Love the gas mileage I get as well as the panoramic sunroof and extra features like built in navigation! The vehicle is very comfortable and a very smooth ride.

Fuel Economy and Power in an Affordable Package
My 2016 Ford Escape SE is reliable, gets great mileage, and its 2.0 EcoBoost engine delivers impressive acceleration when required. It would be the perfect road trip car if the seats were a bit more comfortable.

It's a great family car. There is a lot of cargo room.
The hatch has leaked on our past two Escapes. It is comfortable for our family. They rust easily. And wear out tires and breaks quickly.

Love the interior and exterior design as well as capabilities of the ford escape.
I have had the car for around 2 years now. I had another escape back in 2011-2012 and drove a ford fusion for a few years, but I realized that I really enjoyed my escape. I got a used one, but I have never had any issues with it. The only downside to the one I have is that there are not heated seats, no GPS on the software, and the gas mileage is up and down. I got better gas mileage in my fusion. I'd definitely get a newer model of the escape though in the years to come.

Easy to get in; easy to drive.
I love the comfort of my 2016 ford escape. The ride can be somewhat bumpy, otherwise it is smooth. All of the creature comforts are there and makes for a pleasurable drive. The access for GPS & electronics is also good. Ford sync is easy to use and responsive..

Great SUV for a great price.
No problems at all. Well he crafted automobile. The features inside are both fun and useful. I am glad it was made in the United States of America. The car is very good on gas and it is very roomy to use when my buddies and I go away hunting for the weekend.
