2008 Ford Expedition Review: The Best Deal You’ll Find on a 2008 Full-Size SUV

Gilbert Smith
Jun 9, 2023

The 2008 Ford Expedition is hard to beat if you’re looking for a used full-size SUV under $7,000. Roomy, powerful and dependable with up to 9,200 pounds of towing capacity, the 2008 Expedition is only topped by the 2009 Expedition, which costs about the same and has a better entertainment system.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
Basically an F-150 with some comfy seats in the back, the 2008 Expedition is spacious, powerful, and priced fairly.
dislikeFilled The Bad
A 2008 full-size SUV is going to be a gas-hog with expensive repair bills no matter what.

Is the 2008 Ford Expedition a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – The 2008 Expedition’s biggest failings have to do more with its age and its size class than with its design or its build.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – Some cheap interior trim and suspension that feels stiff with a light load are the only things holding the 2008 Expedition back from a perfect score here.
  • Reliability 8/10 – Basic maintenance may be pricey, but you’ll likely have no issue passing 250,000 miles on the original transmission.
  • Safety 8/10 – Good crash test ratings and generous standard safety features make the 2008 Expedition one of the safer SUVs on the road.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – 12/18 miles to the gallon is good for a full-size SUV from 2008, which is to say, lousy.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2008 Expedition is a good value if you know what you’re getting. Cost of ownership is high, so make sure you actually need a full-size SUV before you invest in one. Most drivers will find that a crossover suits their needs just fine.

2008 ford expedition review.
The air suspension has gone out twice and now my transmission is acting up. It also does not get good gas mileage. Over all, my family and I have really liked this automobile. The children really enjoy the entertainment system and live watching DVDs in the car. It is also a very comfortable car.

It drives as smooth as any luxury vehicle.
My vehicle is a big, smooth driving, cargo and people hauling SUV. It is a versatile vehicle and is very dependable in inclement weather.

Repairs are expensive so be prepared to pay if something goes wrong.
While the size is enormous, it fits everything inside! I do love the entertainment system. Also, I loved the running boards that fold in.

Nice reliable comfortable ca to drive
The size of the vehicle is nice. The way it rides is like you are riding on a cloud. The gas mileage is the only complaint

Great SUV, will take you anywhere.
Great ride. Very spacious and roomy. Very few problems and will last you a very long time. You can invest in this vehicle and not worry about trading it in for many years. My vehicle is at 175,000 miles and haven't had to do much maintenance other than regular oil changes and servicing.

Nice SUV for family, that has fold down seats in the back to make room.
Has been a reliable vehicle. Has a DVD player which is nice when traveling. I like that you have 2 different driver seat settings for different drivers. Also has a button for raising the pedals for people who need to do that. Also has a small back up mirror in the rear view mirror. Works pretty good considering the small area you have to view it.

Our SUV is unbelievably reliable!!!! If you want something big and reliable for long trips, or for your big family, the Expedition is certainly it.
It is perfect for our big family. Has spacious room between the rows, for long legs. A nice sized trunk area, for my love of shopping!! The only downfall to a big SUV, is the gas mileage and cost of filling up.

Great features. Lots of room. Really no issues. But the engine.
I love my vehicle and all the features. However my engine has a huge issue and it blows spark plugs every week. I guess it's the issue with all 5.4 triton engines. I wasn't told about it til after I bought it. Lemon.

I don't feel like it's fully reliable. Every time we get in it we have a new light or warning flashing at us.
I don't like how everything is going wrong with it. Not enough space. Don't like the automatic opening of the back it goes too slow. I do like the heated seats and how it remembers your seat settings.

My Expedition has been pretty good to me considering it's Over 10 years old now.
My expedition is a great car for a road trip when you need to pack a lot of things. However, this car is terrible on gas and costs around $100 to fill the tank. The brakes have become very squeaky but still work. The car is overall comfortable and can fit up to 8 people. At times, I am unable to park or fit places that a smaller car may be able to do so.

This vehicle has good gas mileage for its size.
This vehicle is roomy and great for traveling with our family. I find that this vehicle is hard to repair and they rust very easily. Also, I find that the sensors turn on easily even if there’s not a problem.

What Do Critics Say About the 2008 Ford Expedition?

Consumer Reports criticized the 2008 Expeditions poor fuel economy, stiff ride, and coarse engine noises. They were otherwise impressed with the SUV’s powerful performance in towing, off-roading, and hauling nine passengers in style and comfort.

Kelley Blue Book praised the 2008 Expedition as a spacious three-row SUV capable of pulling whatever boat or trailer you need to pull. They note that the SUV is more than most drivers will need, and you may want to see if you can find a mid-size that suits your needs before you go all in with an Expedition.

Edmunds found the handling to be surprisingly good for a full-size SUV. And, of course, they note that the Expedition is a beast at towing, and it’s incredibly roomy, but fuel economy is poor.

What Common Problems Does the 2008 Ford Expedition Have?

The 2008 Ford Expedition has generated 143 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Structure complaints make up 34 of these, with drivers reporting peeling paint and excessive rust.

14 powertrain complaints point to rollaway and ticking noises likely having to do with shift cable issues. No recalls have been issued on the matter, and incidence rate is very low, so it may be too soon to make a comprehensive diagnosis. Just don’t skip the test-drive.

A recall was issued for the Expedition’s brakes in its first year on the market, with a control module malfunction possibly resulting in weak braking. A handful of complaints continued to roll in as late as 2020, but reports have been few and far between since the recall was issued in 2007.

The 2008 Ford Expedition has been recalled 5 times, which is average for an SUV of this age. The biggest of these was an interior door handle recall affecting over 100,000 units. A braking recall affected around 10,000 units, and the others affected fewer than 200 units each.

How Long Will the 2008 Ford Expedition Last?

Drivers have reported the Ford Expedition lasting 300,000 miles and more. You don’t want to get your hopes up in a used model, however, as skipped oil changes can take years off the powertrain. Expect 250,000 on the original transmission, and consider anything after that a bonus.

Repairpal estimate an annual maintenance cost of around $737, which may sound a bit high, but it’s on par for a full-size SUV from this model year. Suspension repairs make up the most expensive common fixes, with new shocks and struts averaging $741 to $799 each.

accountCircle Monica W

It has been fairly reliable and only minor mechanical issues. I can definitely depend on it. I have yet to be stranded.

accountCircle Christina J

Very reliable. Does not have any problems. We have had it for a year and it is a really great ride. It is very trustworthy when comes to travel.

accountCircle Marissa E

In general, it has been a reliable car to own and drive. Even though the car is over ten years old we haven't had an major issues.

accountCircle Laura G

It's an easy maintenance vehicle and parts are cost efficient, it is a reliable vehicle and I would recommend

accountCircle Heather S

Yes it's reliable. So far we haven't had any problems other than small fixes like headlights and oil changes. Easy maintenance type things

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2008 Ford Expedition is pretty good. CD/MP3 players with 6 speakers come standard, and you can upgrade that to a high-end Audiophile sound system with a 6-disc CD changer and 7 speakers.

Safety technology is good for the model year. Anti-lock brakes and stability control come standard, and rearview cameras are available as an upgrade. More modern features like lane keep assist weren’t really common by 2008, but the Expedition comes with everything you can reasonably expect for the model year.

Is the 2008 Ford Expedition a Good Value?

The 2008 Ford Expedition is a good value if you’re in the market for a full-size SUV. An entry level model typically lists for around $6,362, while a Limited will go for around $8,291. With under 160,000 miles on the transmission, these prices are pretty fair.

Cost of ownership is what turns a lot of people off of owning an Expedition. Fuel economy is pretty poor, and basic maintenance is more expensive than what you’d be paying in a crossover. The Expedition makes for a very expensive daily driver, but it’s a good bargain if you’re leaving it in the garage between road trips and camping expeditions.

What are the Different Models of the 2008 Ford Expedition?

The 2008 Ford Expedition is offered in four trim levels, from the base XLT to the high-end King Ranch.

The entry-level XLT offers:

  • Anti-lock brakes and traction control
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Heated mirrors
  • Cloth seating
  • CD/MP3 player with 6 speakers
  • Cruise control

Next up is the mid-range Eddie Bauer edition, featuring:

  • Leather seating
  • Dual zone automatic air conditioning
  • 10-way power adjust driver seat
  • Audiophile sound system with 6-disc CD changer and 7 speakers

The high-end Limited adds:

  • Parking assist
  • Heated front seats
  • Wood and leather wrapped steering wheel with mounted cruise, climate, and audio controls

What Engines Come In the 2008 Ford Expedition?

  • The 2008 Ford Expedition packs a 5.4L V8 engine delivering 300 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque at an average fuel economy of around 12/18 miles to the gallon. This is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission in rear/four wheel drive, and it can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

What Colors Does the 2008 Ford Expedition Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2008 Ford Expedition?

The only issues with the Ford Expedition when it comes to comfort: The interior trim feels a bit cheap in the lower trim levels, and the suspension is a bit rigid with a light load. Beyond that, this is one of the most comfortable SUVs ever made.

Back seats stretch a generous 60 inches across, and you’ve got nearly enough head room to stand up straight in the back. The third row is comfortable enough to seat two or three adults.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2008 Ford Expedition Have?

The 2008 Ford Expedition goes from 18 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats up, to 55 cubic feet with the third row, and an incredible 108 cubic feet with both of the back rows folded flat. All told, this is more space than you’ll get from some minivans.

You can haul furniture in an Expedition with room left over for someone to help you carry it.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2008 was the second model year in the Expedition’s 3rd Generation, running over a full decade from 2007 to 2018.

2006: The final model year in the Expedition’s 2nd Gen saw the addition of chrome tipped exhaust and some new color options.

2007: Ford got rid of the NBX trim in 2007 and gave the rest of the lineup a cosmetic overhaul. The Expedition was essentially the same SUV under the hood, but with a modernized appearance.

2008: New for 2008 were optional rearview cameras and power running boards.

2009: The 6-speed automatic transmission was overhauled for 2009, FlexFuel engines were offered up, and Ford added the DVD-based SYNC entertainment system to the package.

2010: Trailer sway control was made standard for 2010, making this the one to buy if you’re going to be doing a lot of hauling in your Expedition.

How Does the 2008 Ford Expedition Compare to the Competition?

The 2008 Ford Expedition is the best full-size SUV you’re going to find in this model year at this price.

A 2008 GMC Yukon typically sells for a couple thousand dollars more than a comparable Expedition without delivering another two thousand dollars of value. A 2008 Chevy Tahoe starts at around $9,000 with a third row that doesn’t even fold flat.

The 2008 Ford Expedition’s only real competition in its price range is a 2009 Ford Expedition, which typically lists in the same price range, but features a modernized SYNC entertainment system.

Ford expedition! Hands down the best large size SUV.
The ford expedition is an amazing vehicle. I have the extended version. The room is hands down the best. It has a third row with the same space as the other seats. Even with the third row the amount of space in the back for everything under the sun is a major plus. It rarely breaks down. I have not had many issues with it. Just the regular wear and tear issues like tune ups, tail light bulbs, etc... The only major issue has been a leak coming from the sunroof. My mechanic cleaned out the whole thing and placed a new seal on it and it has been great ever since and no more leaks. The car drives very well even hitting upwards of 80 miles per hour. I call it my tank! It is an amazing vehicle and especially wonderful practical and convenient when you have a large family. I love it and will want to purchase a new model eventually.

Other than having coil pack and spark plug problems the expedition has problem free for may year. It seats 8 and is not to bad on gas average is about 15 mpg. Tires are expensive due to third size in ten years I just put a third set on at 150, 000 miles.

Super sized family hauler!
Super roomy, we have 4 kids and it has enough room for all 6 of us and any gear we have to carry also. The only issues we have had with the vehicle thus far was the ac fan had to be replaced for the front. I was able to do the job myself and it only cost me around $70. I would recommend a Ford expedition el to anyone with a large family.

Awesome 2008 ford expedition Eddie Bauer.
My 2008 ford expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4l v8 triton SUV is great. I purchased it new in 2008, and I have not had any problems with it since. Apart from typical maintenance: tires, battery, serpentine belt, and tune up, I have 120,000, and it still runs like brand new. I do keep it parked in my garage but drive it mon-Friday. I would purchase it again, but I prefer v8 to the newer v6 ecoboost 3.5 engines in the newer model expeditions.

Family/travel perfected
I bought my 08 expedition el xlt used, understandingthe truck hadn't been properly maintained. But with proper maintenance on my end this truck has been amazing and I absolutely love it. I have 6 sons and this truck has been thru some long travels on top of the daily stop and go in town traffic we all have to go thru and it's done it gracefully. My truck came with automatic everything - locks, windows, seats, back gate lift, etc. GPS, DVD, CD, reverse camera, travel rack uptop as well as the shelf the flods down in the back, ports for charging in both front and back, leather seats, captain seating in the front with heating and cooling, tinted windows, carpeted floors, sun/moonroof, and a towing package. Only reason I'd change tracks is for a newer model of this truck . Currently I have 247 thousand miles on this 08 model and were still going STRONG.... LOVE MY TRUCK

My Ford Expedition has been very reliable. It's Performance has been great! Comfort is top notch. I recommend the bench seating for a family, especially with car seats. I have had minimal problems with the Expedition. Most repairs have been completed due to normal wear and tear and things needing to be replaced. For instance, struts, tires, etc. Even with it not being an XLT, it has a lot of room in it. And with the fold down seats in the back make everything very accessible. Fine family car if purchasing from a reputable used car dealer.
We purchased this car used. There have been a number of issues with the front passenger axle. The a/c heater are not very reliable, they work sometimes, mostly they do not work. The front passenger window motor stopped working and the window fell off track, inside the door. I do like the storage space and third row access. The middle row middle seat does not fold down which limits hauling capabilities but it's fine as we mostly use it as a family car.

My expedition is roomy, built great, runs great, love the entertainment system! It has close to 200,000 mi on it and is still kicking@

It eats gas like crazy. Good mileage.
It is relatively a good car. Despite the fact that you can feel every bump in the road, it is good. It eats gas like crazy though.

Great family vehicle with convenient amenities.
My expedition has been a reliable and safe vehicle. White it does not get great gas mileage, I only drive a short distance to work. It holds 7 adults and is a big and comfortable vehicle. The only issues I have had are in the extreme cold weather with the electrical system (I.E. Side mottos and windows have gotten frozen in place once or twice). Have had some minor repairs done to the car after buying it used in 2012. It has seat warmers and coolers, automatic 3rd row folding seats, a DVD entertainment system, and 2nd row captains chairs. This is my 3rd expedition. They have always been great cars and I have purchased one new and 2 used.

Cargo space and comfortable.
The expedition has a spacious interior, comfortable seats. Excellent cargo space. It also has a third row seat that folds down for more room. This vehicle rides smooth like a car but can work like a truck. It's the best of both.

I have not had any major mechanical problems at all. It is been a great vehicle.
Dislike, it is hard to see out of and has blind spots. I love everything else. It can feel too heavy also.
