May 31, 2023

The 2017 Ford Expedition lasts around 200,000 miles with some touchscreen and electrical draw issues reported. At $17,895 to $32,000, it’s a good value for a large SUV, although they can get expensive to keep running as they age.

Passenger room is great in all three rows, the cargo space is fantastic and the engine is reasonably powerful.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Some of the dash materials are cheap, the suspension is bouncy and the steering feel is very vague.

Is the 2017 Ford Expedition a Good Used SUV?

Large family vehicle, plenty of space for our 5 kids.
Extremely comfortable, reliable. Have driven on long trips with no issues. We have driven it on numerous 13 hour drives to visit family down the east coast. We live in a heavy snow area. Never once have we had an issue driving in the snow, it is comforting knowing my wife can get to and from work or driving the kids around all winter safely.

Enjoyable vehicle and very reliable.
Absolutely love my SUV. It has not given us any problems. It goes in for regular oil changes. The best feature is the backup screen. You can see your speed and oil levels on the dash. The color we love is charcoal and is gorgeous. The expedition is an extremely reliable vehicle. Family sized SUV.

Comfortable and very stylish!
We haul a travel trailer with this vehicle. It tows amazing! The ecoboost v6 has great power and performs as well as any 8 cylinder we have owned. It is very comfortable as well as it is stylish. The only issue we have had was with the throttle body with was covered under warranty.

2017 ford expedition el platinum.
I love our expedition el. I was a little concerned about it having a 6 cyl but the ecoboost has more than enough power. We tow an 18’ trailer with our side by side load up and it performs great. The fuel mileage is great considering the size. It is twice the size of our previous 3 row SUV and gets better mileage. Great ride. Lots of room. I am 6’4” so legroom is a big deal for me. The expedition has plenty of it at every position.

2017 Ford Expedition safety and comfort make it #1 in our book.
Comfortable, smooth and quiet ride. We love our Expedition. Comfortably seats 8 people with additional cargo room. The eco boost gives it an awesome get up and go!! Never lagging or slowed down by the air conditioners. What most surprised me about my expedition was the fuel economy. It is the most fuel efficient SUV we have owned. Brakes can feel soft but have good stopping distance. Backup camera did go out shortly after we purchased it but it was replaced by the dealer, We use it daily to make sure that there is nothing under or around such a large vehicle. Sunroof and back vent windows are a nice alternative to opening the regular windows. Car seats are easily installed and I feel that everyone is safe in the car. Our expedition included the towing package which is great for boating or a trailer full of landscaping for our yard. This is our 2nd expedition my husband and I both drive one now. It's safe, durable and roomy ride is perfect for our family and the additional seating is perfect for when we have extra family or friends in tow.

Beautiful design, great gas mileage and super comfortable
Absolutely love the space it offers. It's such a comfortable ride and great for my daily commute. I have two kids and live and work fifty miles apart... The gas mileage is great! I haven't had any issues at all. Other than the normal preventative maintenance my Ford Expedition has been a dream!

Comfortable and affordable.
It's a good car, lots of room flexible, seating. It has good driving and tires are great. It is also room enough for traveling, has truck space for luggage and fold down sitting. It is everything you could image, for your family, friends or yourself. That's it!

There is plenty of room, love the backup feature that beeps.
This particular vehicle does not ride as well as the previous expedition and I certainly dislike the quality of the cloth used on the seats. Should have gone with leather. There is rust coming thru under the paint. The paint is bubbling up. I would probably go a different route next time.

Awesome truck has some minor problems.
I love my truck it has saved my life many times! Good on gas and has lots of room for my son and dog. The only negative review I have is sometimes the air conditioning goes out a lot. I have had it in the shop every other year. It is always something different when I take it in.

Fast Ford Expedition is roomy and convenient.
The vehicle is great for fitting lots of passengers comfortably. It has features that are helpful such as wireless phone connections and a plug to charge electronics. The fan is really loud when you first start it up but settles after a minute. It has turbo so it is actually really fast. The gas mileage is decent as you could expect from an SUV.

Runs well and gets pretty good gas mileage
There isn't enough storage when third row is being used, it is helpful that part of the third row can stay down, good gas mileage, window motor broke after a year, , comfortable for a family of five, the radio isn't the best but is acceptable, no visible rust

Great room for a family of six!
Okay ride. This vehicle started giving me problems with the front end suspension and piping noise when you make sharp turns. Also I have had trouble with the back up camera. Additionally, mechanism for letting down heap rest broke after 7 months. Overall, not really satisfied with vehicle.

The highlight about the car is the color it looks almost like a candy apple.
The car is amazing it turns great, gas is good. My main dislike is the sunroof doesn't fully open all the way. It rides nice and smooth and has good comfortably. Mileage on the car are great and I have been driving the car for few years and it's great.

Standard 2017 ford expedition xl.
Have owned this vehicle for a little over a year and have had multiple problems including roof leaking, failed throttle, fan blower goes in and out. I do like how big it is. Comfortably fits my 4 children in car seats with a standard size trunk. I do not have any bells and whistles on this vehicle. I do wish I had navigation. I like the number of cup holders!

Great 4 wheel drive and reliability!
The vehicle runs well, but lacks the add-one that I would prefer to have such as heated seats and navigation. There is a knocking noise that started in the far back area of the vehicle when anything happens, from a door is opened while the vehicle is not turned on to driving down the road and changing the temperature.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Expedition?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Ford Expedition is outdated and in need of a redesign, with reasonable owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Expedition at 3.7/5, enjoying the spacious third row seats, but finds the interior to be outdated.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Expedition a 4.6/5, praising the high towing capacity for an SUV, but owners don’t like the inefficient engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Ford Expedition Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Ford Expedition include the touch screen freezing, excessive battery drain, along with brake fluid leaks. Overall, these problems are similar to many other large SUVs on the market, leading to average repair costs as the Expedition ages.

The touch screen freezing is the most widespread complaint on the 2017 Ford Expedition, showing up in the first 2,500 miles. There are software updates available for the touchscreen which improves its reliability. Most dealerships will install this software for free, while some charge around $50 for a labor fee.

Excessive battery drain is another problem mentioned by 2017 Expedition owners at around 5,000 miles. The Expedition has a lot of electrical accessories, and sometimes they do not turn off properly when the SUV is off. Diagnosing the source of the electrical draw costs around $100, and fixing the issue can cost $20 to $500.

Brake fluid leaks have also been reported on some Expedition models at the brake master cylinder. There are two common ways that brake fluid leaks including at the brake lines where they meet the cylinder, or due to a crack in the cylinder. The master cylinder was part of a recall, and will be replaced for free.

There are two recalls on the 2017 Ford Expedition, which is better than some other full size SUVs. The first recall covers the brake master cylinder, while the second covers a blower motor which can cause a fire. Ford will replace the affected parts for both recalls for free.

How Long Will the 2017 Ford Expedition Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Ford Expedition can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than other large SUVs like the Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to many other full-size SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $463 per year.

As a used 2017 Ford Expedition reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the ignition lock cylinder for $200, seat heater costing $400, along with the A/C evaporator which costs around $1,000.

accountCircle Kathryn D

I have not had any problems. The fan is really loud in the hot weather. I have to turn the air conditioner of at drive thrus

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is okay with a standard 4.2-inch screen with Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen with the Sync 3 interface, along with a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is basic, offering a rearview camera and parking sensors. The only optional safety technology is blind spot monitoring.

Is the 2017 Ford Expedition a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 Ford Expedition is a good value since it’s reasonably reliable while offering plenty of room for a large family. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,895 to $32,000, making it less than a Chevy Suburban or Nissan Armada. When new, the price range was $47,125 to $69,895. Depreciation is worse than other large SUVs, losing about 18% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Ford Expedition?

The 2017 Ford Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that produces a substantial 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque at up to 18 MPG. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift capability. When properly equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, the Expedition can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

What Colors Does the Ford Expedition Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford Expedition?

The 2017 Ford Expedition is widely recognized for its high level of comfort, which makes it a great choice for both short trips and long journeys. Inside the Expedition, you’ll find spacious seating arrangements for up to eight passengers, with ample headroom and legroom in all three rows. This means adults can comfortably sit even in the third row, which is a feature not often found in many SUVs.

The front seats are particularly comfortable, with power-adjustable settings allowing drivers and passengers to find their optimal driving and seating positions. Available features such as heated and ventilated front seats, as well as heated second-row seats, further enhance the comfort level, especially in extreme weather conditions.

The ride quality is another comfort-enhancing factor in the Expedition. With its independent rear suspension and available continuously controlled damping, the vehicle provides a smooth ride, absorbing most bumps and imperfections on the road with ease.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford Expedition Have?

The 2017 Ford Expedition is quite generous regarding storage space, making it an ideal vehicle for families or individuals who usually travel or carry large items. On the standard model, the cargo space behind the third row offers 18.6 cubic feet. This amount of space can comfortably fit several pieces of medium-sized luggage or a large stroller with room to spare.

If you need more room, the Expedition’s second and third rows can be folded down. With the third row down, cargo space expands to an impressive 55 cubic feet, which is enough to accommodate larger items such as bicycles or a sizable amount of home improvement materials.

With both the second and third rows folded down, the Expedition provides an incredible 108.3 cubic feet of cargo space. This substantial amount of room could easily accommodate larger pieces of furniture like a small couch, or even an entire set of outdoor camping gear for a family.

The Expedition Max model offers an astounding 130.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. This model can handle almost anything you could imagine – from moving across the country, to fitting a kayak or large appliances like a refrigerator.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Ford Expedition was introduced for the 2007 model year.

2015: Updates include a new engine, suspension, and minor exterior styling changes.

2016: New Sync 3 infotainment system added to the stereo system.

2017: No major changes from earlier years.

2018: Fully redesigned for the third generation with new engines, technology, styling, and more space.

2019: Minor changes from earlier years including the Stealth Edition package.

2020: New King Ranch model offered, Black Accent package added to the XLT models.

2021: New XL entry-level model with only a five-seat configuration, Co-Pilot360 now optional on XLT model.

How Does the Ford Expedition Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Ford Expedition is a nice full size SUV built to be able to comfortably fit a large family and tow trailers when needed, although you sacrifice some long-term reliability as it ages.

The Lincoln Navigator is another large SUV which costs around $2,000 more. Both the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition are built on the same platform, although the Lincoln Navigator is more luxurious. We recommend the Lincoln Navigator since it offers more features, making it worth the extra money.

The Chevy Tahoe is a popular competitor which costs about $3,000 more. Long-term reliability ratings are better on the Chevy Tahoe, while the Ford Expedition has more legroom in the third row. We recommend the Chevy Tahoe since it’s cheaper to own long-term, although both are decent choices.

Motor issues
We bought a used 2017 with high mileage and have had nothing but trouble. The dealership did not put on car fax all of the things they did to get it ready to sell and pass along problems to the next owner (us). We have spent almost as much on repairs as we have in payments and it has even more problems each step of the way. I love the seating and the stereo and the interior. I bought it to use in rideshare driving. I have babied it along but the motor issues are getting worse. The dealership said they replaced 4 of the 6 cylinders. My question to them is since you had it all opened up why not replace all 6? I know why, get it running long enough to unload it. The right headlight eats bulbs and having to take all of the parts off to replace it is a major pain. We don’t have the money to do major repairs and the dealership is like too bad so sad screw you. We have bought 2 other vehicles from the Ford dealership and thought that the sister company of jeep with the same owner would be good. We never had a problem with the Ford dealerships and have been loyal to Ford all the way back to the 80s. The dealership is Mak Hiak jeep in Georgetown TX. We are upside down on money and we have no idea where to go from here. I loved all my Fords in the past but this one and the dealership’s lack of concern for loyal customers has me thinking about this vehicle being the last ford I buy and definitely the last vehicle I buy from Mak Hiak dealerships.

Comfortable family vehicle.
It has been a safe reliable vehicle for a family. It is very comfortable with leather heated and cooled seats. Plenty of room in back for bags or groceries with third row up. The third row is spacious. Seats eight people comfortably. Backup camera and sensors assist with the vehicle being larger.

I love my car the size is great!! The only drawback is it is a gas guzzler.. I love that it has enough space for all of us.. I hate that it is usually just me driving alone... I also do not like the face that it is very expensive to maintain.. My air went out and I cannot afford to fix it.

I love my expedition, it is one of the most comfortable vehicle I have driven, it handles more like a car than a truck, easy to handle and park, even in today's small parking spaces. I love my ford expedition.
I love the large size, including plenty of seating and large space in the back for storage. It is also great for towing a boat, which I need to do frequently for work. I also like how easy it is to put the back row of seats down for even more storage space. The only problem I have had is with the air conditioner. Lately, every once in a while when I turn the vehicle on the blower in the front will not turn in for a few minutes. I like how there are both seat warmers and seat coolers; the coolers are especially great for Florida!

Comfortable ride on trips but do miss softer seats.
It is a very reliable vehicle. Gets better mileage than I expected. There are all kinds of thing on there but I hardly use half of them. It would take too long to learn it all and then not use them. It is a tight squeeze between the doors and the seats. My earlier model had more room there to hold things. The leather seats are not as soft as the earlier model, but I can cope with it.

2017 ford expedition - best vehicle purchase I ever made.
The 2017 ford expedition is by far the best and most comfortable vehicle I have owned! I own a limited v6 with turbo. It gives me the power of a v8 with the gas mileage of a v6. Of the other vehicles I test drive prior to this purchase, the expedition performed better than the others. I have not encountered any problems to date and all features work as well now as they did in 2017 when it was purchased. The middle captains row allows for plenty of room for kids and adults to get in and out of the 3rd row. A huge bonus with this vehicle and a strong selling feature, is that adults can sit in the 3rd row with plenty of leg room. I wish there was more trunk space when the 3rd row is up. However, I guess that is why they make the extended versions. Overall, I am very happy with my expedition and will most likely purchase another one when it is time for an upgrade.

Easy car to handle, especially for a SUV. Would definitely recommend to others. A little on the pricey side but is worth every dime. I haven't needed to do maintenance on it yet after 3 years! You do not even have to like SUV’s and this car is easy to use.

Ford Expedition is the perfect family vehicle!!
I love all of the space in this vehicle. It has the room we needed for all 6 people in our family as well as plenty of room for everything we need for camping, vacations, groceries, etc. He seats are very comfortable and the middle row of seats recline as well making it all the more comfortable for long trips with four children. The ride is smooth and quiet and does very well on gas mileage for being a pretty big vehicle

It has a roomy interior. It is easy to maneuver even though it is an SUV.
I like my vehicle because it is spacious and comfortable. It is newer with many extra cool things. I love the leather seats and space. I have no complaints.

Best vehicle purchase I have made so far.
I really love this vehicle. It drives well and is comfortable. I have had very few issues with it. I love the extra features like the blind spot alert when changing lanes and the alert of possible vehicle or pedestrian when backing. I have the tow package and it pulls the trailer well.

Great choice for a large SUV.
No problems as of yet at 36, 000 miles. Performs well for such a large vehicle. Good acceleration. Great turning radius. Very reliable. Extremely comfortable and roomy. Enjoy the wireless connected features, heated and cooled leather seats and Sirius radio.

It has plenty of room and space for kids.
The space of this vehicle is great for a family of 5. We are able to take our family on vacation without any hassle.

Just bought, great so far.
We recently bought this vehicle and have not encountered any issues. We have the extended length and love the extra space. The gas mileage is average for a vehicle of its size. The automatic lift gate and fold down seats are a very convenient feature.

Sunroof, safe, good on gas. Very stylish vehicle.
The 2017 ford expedition XLT is reliable. The ford expedition is great in cabin room and fits 8 people. It is a good vehicle for around town driving as well as for long road trips. The vehicle gets about 550 miles to a tank of gas. I would highly recommend this vehicle for a family it is comfortable and safe.

Definitely look into this reliable and well made vehicle.
It is extremely comfortable. The room is amazing and it is of sound build. The downfall is the gas that it uses, but for the luxury we make sacrifices. It is the most convenient vehicle I have ever owned and the mechanical costs are not terrible. Overall, I would recommend.

Smooth ride but needs more car seat room.
Third row can only fit one car seat and only has tether straps for one car seat. When the third row is up the trunk space is very small however there is a nice divider that allows you to organize your trunk. The power steps are amazing and all together the vehicle rides very nicely.

It's very roomy. Very comfortable and tech savvy
Lots of room. Classy but things roll out of the hatch when you automatically open it so that's a dislike

Reliable vehicle... Worth it!
The 2017 Ford Expedition is an exceptional car. It is pretty reliable and safe. Nice, high quality interior. It's a very safe car as I have witnessed 2 relatives get in car accidents with this car that protected them very well. My only complaint would be the gas pedal. I feel like there is often a delay between the moment you put your foot on the pedal and when the gas starts to kick in. But overall, I would definitely recommend this car. The air conditioning is great, but it is also good to note there aren't any AC pockets in the very back seat. The GPS in the car is great, as well as all the other bells and whistles!

We love this SUV and what it can do
We love having a great and reliable source of transportation. We are in love with all of the bells and whistles. The SUV looks great and drives great. We love all the extra cargo space that we have with the el. The Expedition easily pulls our travel trailer through any terrain.

It is not in the planned obsolesce mode like most American cars.
I love the way it handles and looks. I do wish I had gotten some more power options like bbn power lift gate.

Ford expedition - great family vehicle.
I enjoy my vehicle a lot. I have a 2017 ford expedition. It is charcoal grey. Seats 8 people. I love the amount of space that is in it. It is AWD which is necessary for Michigan winters and is a great family vehicle. The only thing I would change is adding car seat latches to the back row.

A big SUV that gets decent gas mileage.
It is a pretty nice vehicle to drive. It has more than enough room for my family of 4, in fact you can actually fit 7 0r 8 grown people. The model I own has AWD, 4wd lo, 4wd hi and 2wd so it is equipped to handle all kinds road conditions. It is also equipped with the ecoboost engine so it gets fairly decent gas mileage.

Amazing features, comfortable and reliable.
No problems, love the performance. The car has a fast acceleration. Very reliable, has never left me stranded. Very comfortable. I take this on long trips frequently. The features on this vehicle are amazing. This car has all you could ever ask for. My favorite feature is the camera.

Great family vehicle. Comfortable for everyone.
Super comfortable for all riders. Captain chairs are great for the kids. Enough room for the entire family. The ride is extremely smooth. Dual air and vents on the ceiling in the second and third rows keep the kids cool even when in car seats. Very minimal road noise.

I feel safe and comfortable.
The car has been very reliable. The seats are very comfortable, probably the most comfortable I have ever driven. The air conditioning is very powerful and cools the car quickly which is a bonus since we have leather interior. The one downside to our a/c is that it can blow so hard that it will close the vent. As far as performance, the car has been very reliable and given us no issue. It drives very nicely for a large SUV. Bluetooth and sync work well, sounds is fantastic, and there are many ports for charging. Ample legroom and space in the back for children and adults. Car seats fit very well.
