Alex Showalter
Dec 8, 2022

The 2018 Ford Explorer lasts around 250,000 miles with relatively minor stereo and paint issues reported. At $19,600 to $31,250, it’s a good value for a comfortable three-row SUV with some nice technology available.

likeFilled The Good
The cabin is very quiet for an SUV, there’s a lot of room for cargo and the SYNC 3 stereo system is very easy to use.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Visibility is not great with the smaller rear windows, the transmission is slow and the steering feels loose.

Is the 2018 Ford Explorer a Good Used SUV?

  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 22 MPG, giving 409 miles of range from the 18.6 gallon tank. Gas costs are $70 cheaper than average, at $226 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2018 Ford Explorer is cheaper than many other SUVs, although it also loses value quickly, giving it an average value score.

My Ford Explorer is the Sport model. It is "blacked out" and I love black vehicles, so it love the way it looks. It is very fast and fully loaded with tons of safety features. The only negative would be that it is expensive and uses a lot of gas.
It's very fast. It also has power fold third row seating with storage underneath even when the seats are upright in use.

Safety and hands free features.
My favorite features are the sync hands free availability and the buttons on steering wheel for voice control of not only calls and messages but for the radio controls too. Also safety features include rear camera and alignment bars and the wake up feature if you start falling asleep or veering off it will vibrate the steering wheel and suggest you take a nap. Also alerts when there's something near your car in any direction so you can avoid hitting it.

Ford explorer is an ideal family vehicle.
The car is perfect for a family of five. Everyone fits comfortably with enough space. The third row seats have less legroom than the middle and front seats. The trunk is also an ideal size, but less room when traveling or going on a fishing trip with the whole family. The third row seats go down which helps load things in the back but if you are a family of more than four that is the downside. It is really great for long trips since the car does not waste a lot of gas. It also does not take a lot of money to fill up the tank. The extra cup holders on the door really come in handy for extra drinks in the car. There is a built in navigation system that also comes in handy when your phone is handy. It gives you really easy direction but the only downside is, it is not always up to date which highway renovations.

Ford Explorer Exceeds Expectations
I had a Jeep Cherokee that was fully loaded. I traded it in and got a Ford Explorer, basic without all the bells and whistles. It has a third row seat which I love for hauling kids. It has my SiriusXM and that's all that matters. I don't have the Navigation but it connects to my iPhone and works great!

Stylish for the executive & roomie for the soccer mom
Smooth ride and quiet, massaging driver and front passenger seats, XM radio, third row, very reliable, rear climate control, back-up camera, large touchscreen, XM radio. My only complaints are drink/console storage and tire pressure dropped during cold temperatures, which is common in a lot of vehicles. Great vehicle!

Great for large families!
Love this car! My husband had one as a company vehicle and we loved traveling in it with 4 kids. Everyone had space and was comfortable. The only downside is the gas mileage. It has a small tank and we average about 19 miles to the gallon. Fun driving car though..

It is amazing our sunshine.
Amazing performance. Very comfortable and very roomy. We love our SUV it is a must have. We go on many family vacations. Love the cameras all we are missing is a sunroof. Heated seat is a must. Love that the back seats have heated seats as well. And back seats move back and forth for the comfort of the third row.

Ford Explorer - great ride for family road trips
The Ford Explorer is very comfortable and spacious. Even with the third row up, there is still a decent amount of trunk space. A drawback of having the bench in the second row instead of two bucket seats is that accessing the third row can be a bit cumbersome. Sync and CarPlay are great features. The gas mileage could be better but isn't terrible for a vehicle of this size. It would be nice to have a larger gas tank. The car has leaked oil after getting oil changes and had to go back to the shop each time, once to get the filters tightened and the other time to replace a gasket. I am not sure if this is a problem with my particular Ford dealership or a common problem with Ford Explorers. Other than that, I had one frayed wire which needed to be replaced so that the electric windows would work but otherwise no major issues. It's a great family vehicle and we love it for road trips.

Impossible to use for drive in theatre. If you ever need this vehicle to be on but have the lights off it’s a no go. Get something else.We bought this for the drive in theatre and were seriously disappointed and angry.

2017 exhaust fume Explorer
If if I can give negative stars for Ford I would. I have a 2017 Ford Explorer with 20,000 miles on it already going into the shop for the second time for pulling in exhaust fumes in the AC. With three little children I did my research and Ford claims they revamped the AC system. Obviously ford doesn't have their stuff together because mine pulls so much exhaust fumes in cab it's sickening . Don't let Ford fool you the Explorer has been and will always be a deathtrap i can't wait to get out of mine

Eventually it's going be the reason you will be rear ended and possibly killed. There is no recall but lots of identical complaints online.
I had an Escape before and loved the size. The Explorer is too much like a truck for me. I have complained to the dealership about the vehicle losing acceleration sometimes while driving. I have chosen to stay off the expressway since I have come terribly close to being rear ended by semi's when the acceleration slowly drops to 0 without warning or reason. I am so very sorry I have it for a 3 year lease. I am thankful I didn't buy it outright.

Rains on your head and shifter blocks cup holders.
If it rains, rain gathers on the top edge of the drivers door. When you open the door, the water perfectly pours on you. It lands exactly where you would naturally stand when pulling door open. Shifter between the seats really reduces passenger space. The shifter also blocks cup holders.

Good looking car with lots of extras.
It does not have heated mirrors. The curse has to be turned on every time you start your vehicle. The side mirrors does not have the enhanced view for passing cars. Doors stay locked when in park. It drives nice and very comfortable. Lots of features.

This is a Ford Explorer review with details from a new buyer.
I do not like the interior color of my car. I also do not like that the back seats are not bucket. I wish the car had a foot rail to step into the car. That would make it easier. I would also like to control the backseat air.

Ford explorer a very basic boring choice.
Cheaply made interior that doesn't hold up with regular use. Hard to connect phone to Bluetooth. Berry basic features and technology for high price vehicle. Gas mileage is terrible. Overall mediocre at best and would not buy another ford explorer. You get more features, better quality and looks going with other brands like Kia.

No problems at all, just bad luck with this vehicle. Two tires had to be replaced during the first year and sensors had issues. Car drives beautifully and there is a ton of space! Third row seating is spacious and comfortable! Be sure to get tire insurance and save yourself some money!

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Explorer?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Ford Explorer is a roomy, quiet and competent SUV, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Explorer at 3.8/5, praising the high-tech features, but doesn’t like the limited legroom in the third row.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Explorer a 4.2/5, enjoying the upscale interior for the money, yet owners don’t like the poor off-road performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Ford Explorer Have?

Problems found on the 2018 Ford Explorer include stereo system software issues, paint bubbling, along with relatively rare transmission failures. Overall, these problems are similar to other SUVs, with average repair bills as well as the Explorer ages.

Stereo system software issues with the SYNC 3 system show up on some 2018 Ford Explorer models in the first 15,000 miles. The screen is known to freeze, becoming unresponsive. There are software updates which improve the reliability of the system which most dealers will install for free. Some owners also say they have had the screen replaced in rare circumstances, costing around $750.

Paint bubbling, particularly on the hood, also happens to some Explorer models at around 50,000 miles. Paint which is not properly cared for and left out in direct sunlight will start to fail. The only way to fix the bubbling is to repaint the affected areas, at a cost of around $1,000 per panel.

Transmission failures have also been reported by some 2018 Explorer owners at around 35,000 miles, yet it’s much rarer than in earlier years. Usually Ford will replace the transmission under warranty for free. If you’re out of warranty, then a new transmission costs around $4,000 to install, depending on local labor rates.

There are 3 recalls on the 2018 Ford Explorer, which is close to other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the fuel pressure sensor, which may leak fuel, yet it only covers 144 Explorer models. Ford will replace the sensor on affected models. Other recalls cover the seat-backs and roof rails, which are not a mechanical concern.

How Long Will the 2018 Ford Explorer Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Ford Explorer can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other SUVs according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $538 per year.

As a 2018 Ford Explorer reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the radiator hose for $500, a window regulator motor costing $275, as well as the transmission shift cable which costs $190.

No. I have not had any problems with this vehicle as of yet. Purchased extended warranty. Weve owned it now for a year.

accountCircle A S

Yes, the 2018 ford explorer is reliable and I was able to take several trips of over 100+ miles. I have not had any issues with it as of yet.

accountCircle Addison M

For the most part the 2018 ford explorer sport is pretty reliable but the cup holders in the back broke off, one of the air vents in the back is broke, and had mileage is not the best.

accountCircle Julie H

It is been very reliable for me. I have not had any problems so far. I am not a fan or the turn signals though. I would change those. I would also like to see the gas & brake pedal move instead of just adjusting the seat.

accountCircle Victoria O

I have not had any problems with my ford explorer. It runs fine and gets me to and from my destination.

accountCircle Lenel M

No I have had to change two of the tires within the last 5 months. Also the left axis also. But overall still run great.

accountCircle James L

Had problems with the battery, had to change the battery and the harness . At first air condition smell like a wet rag.

accountCircle James T

We have had zero problems. It starts up runs quite and can access the start from my phone. Good gas mileage and great traction.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is average for an SUV, with a standard 4.2-inch screen standard on the base model. On the Limited and higher models there is an 8-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3 which works well.

Safety technology is good in the 2018 Ford Explorer offering a standard rearview camera along with MyKey, which is a driver monitoring system. Optional safety upgrades include front and rear parking sensors, a front parking camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, as well as forward collision warning.

Is the 2018 Ford Explorer a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Ford Explorer is a good value since it’s cheaper than many other SUVs. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $19,600 to $31,250, making it less than a Chevy Tahoe or Honda Pilot. When new, the price range was $32,140 to $53,940. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

It’s larger than many other midsize SUVs, yet smaller than some of the longer wheelbase full size versions. Seating is very nice, with comfortable captain’s chairs available in the second row.

Passenger room is great throughout the cabin with enough room for adults in the third row, although leg room is a bit limited for taller adults.

How Does the Ford Explorer Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Explorer is a very good SUV for 2018 since there are serious reliability improvements from earlier years, making it a nice choice for shoppers.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another SUV which costs around $4,000 more. Off-road performance is better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Ford Explorer offers more passenger room with the third row. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee since it’s a bit nicer inside, although both are good SUVs.

The Chevy Traverse is another large SUV which costs about $500 less. Passenger room is better in the third row of the Chevy Traverse, while the Ford Explorer has more powerful engine choices available. We recommend the Ford Explorer since there are fewer complaints from owners as they age.

My 2018’ford explorer is a great ride. It rides smoothly and I love that it has 3rd row seat for extra passengers. Great SUV for big families or just to not have to feel cramped.
No issues great SUV very reliable. Very nice for long car rides or vacations. You can spread your passengers out to where everyone has enough room to be comfortable and sane. Gas mileage is pretty good especially being a bigger SUV. Seats fold down to give you extra cargo space for big purchases or room for your pets to room and feel comfortable.

To date we have had no issues. Best vehicle I have driven. We maintain here regularly and wash everyday. Very comfortable ride. Massaging seats are amazing. We opted for 2nd row captain chairs. Carplay is the coolest thing. She has the best get up and go, gas mileage for an SUV is great.

Absolutely not spacious at all but seats more passengers than my previous vehicle a Tahoe. We had a 5th child and needed a car that would hold a 7th passenger. The Tahoe has a lot more room than this does but also was a gas hog. This car is great on gas and has been super reliable for my 8 hour trips once a week for the past 6 months.

My best is black even though dog hair is a problem.
My explorer is the third explorer I have owned. This tells you how much I like them. They are sturdy and drive good; maintenance is low; seats are comfortable, I cannot seem to set them just right for my height and size. The color is black which makes for a good-looking vehicle but difficult to keep clean on the inside.

Traveling with your furry family!
The explorer when we got it was really nice. The customizable ac for those in the front and the back helps in Texas heat. We have a lot of dogs (4/5 depending on if someone is staying with us) so the bigger size was super useful for travel! It has decent mileage for where we need to go.

Love my ford explorer!! Perfect family vehicle.
My ford explorer has become my favorite vehicle to drive. As a woman who only stands at 5’3”, it is not difficult to climb in and drive. I do not have to pull the seat all the way to the front to reach the pedals. It also has seat settings so it can adjust quickly when my husband decides to drive. The third row option seating is why we bought this SUV when we were expecting our second son. We have a German shepherd who fits perfectly in the trunk area now, and I know as our kids get older, they will enjoy the extra row of seats to stretch out on long car trips. I have leather seats which is perfect for when my kids spill food and drinks. Quick clean up.

The quality of XLT ford explorer.
This car is great for family. The inside needs more attention to detail. Some corners have been cut cheaply. The floor carpet does not go all the way underneath the seats, which I find as a negative. The seats are nice though. I would recommend a higher trim level.

This is a great car! Not just for people with big families but also for single people. There’s so much space, especially in the middle row, for if you do have children, they have enough leg room. Ford explorer roomy comfortable.
The 2018 ford explorer has had very few issues. Even though this SUV looks small it has plenty of room. The cargo area gives more than enough room to haul grocery’s, tools for small jobs. The heating and air in the ford explorer can handle any conditions to keep you comfortable in extreme heat or extreme cold. The one downside of this vehicle it does not have controls to open garage doors like most vehicles have nowadays.

2018 ford explorer is comfortable and fun to drive.
My explorer is comfortable, fun to drive, and I feel safe in it. The engine is a v6, but it really should be a v8, due to its size, sure it's a bit sluggish at start up. I haven’t had any mechanical issues at all, it is reliable and for its size and class, fuel efficiency is pretty good. Legroom in the 2nd row is very generous, the 3rd row is a bit tight for average size adults, but fine for children.

Form, fit, function, and for family!
The only problem thus far is that the GPS has recently failed and will be taken in to be replaced under warranty. The 2018 that I own is an XLT trim with a sports package, so it looks great, has tons of bells and whistles, and is as comfortable and luxurious as it is practical. It has enough horsepower to do whatever work must be done in it. It's a great family vehicle, and has tons of space for the kids and all their stuff.

The seats fold down to carry large items.
It runs good, is comfortable to drive and looks good. It carries what I need to carry in the back and the number of people I want to carry who I need to carry as well as all the animals when we all have to go somewhere. It is easy to maintain and looks good and has held up very well for the 3 years that we have had it.

Not everyone likes iphones!
The android auto does not work well with the car. I am constantly having issues. The steering wheel has auto heat and I cant turn it off and I don't need it all the time. The 3rd row is a waste of space where are people going to put there feet. The gas milage is pathetic.

The model is ahead of other generation.
My is car has maximum working performance, the fuel consumption is extremely economical. The leather seats are very comfortable, this car feels like a home outside home. The car engine is the most efficient I have ever purchased, I can rely on the map navigation in built in the car.

2018 Sport in Blue Metallic
Love my 2018 Ford Sport, comfortable and powerful with all the luxury and safety features I’ve been looking for. I highly recommend buying and off lease at a Ford dealer as you will save a lot of money and it’s certified preowned by Ford with warranty till 100000 miles, it’s such a blast to drive the Sport with the twin turbo power

The explorer in my point of view.
The passenger seat warmer goes out, the calipers stuck and caused the rotors to need to be replaced. The rear view camera is great. All the back seats fold down for added space to transport things. The keyless start is golden during the winter months so that the engine is warmed up before I even get in the car.

Would definitely consider it.
Comfortable to drive. Gas mileage is not great. Ability to carry 7 passengers is a convenient feature. A/c is cold and had rear air conditioning. Nice blind spot mirrors. Ecoboost would have been a nice upgrade. Dash controls are ready to use. 4x4 send to work decent however being an SUV it does not have a lot of ground clearance. Work good in hard packed desert so far. Have not tried in sand yet.

Going smaller isn't always a bad thing.
The ford explorer gives us all the room we need and a smaller size than the expedition. Better gas mileage too has made the swap over, one of the best choices.

Color is special. Ruby red.
Reliable and affordable on gas. Easy to drive. Easy to clean. Seats and store much more than advertised. Husband and friends adore our vehicle. Hauls large loads easy. Furniture. Groceries. Off road compatible. Roadtrips. Rescue missions. Weddings.

Great American-made SUV for the money.
Have had zero mechanical issues. Love the ecoboost engine. It is roomy enough for family travel, but still gets decent gas mileage. The interior is made of quality material. Overall, it is a great vehicle. This is my first ford to own, and it won't be my last.

Great ride with get up and go.
This is a company issued vehicle. I recently switched from an older rear wheel drive vehicle. The Explorer is front wheel drive and rides different than what I'm used to. Ride is comfortable. Has plenty of get up and go even with the 4 cylinder engine.

2018 ford explorer - a great family car.
The 2018 ford explorer XLT is a luxurious ride at an affordable price compared to other vehicles in its class. The four wheel drive operates amazing in the snowy northeast and the third row seating allows all of our kids to ride comfortably on long trips. Loaded with front and rear sensors the vehicle let’s us know when we are close enough to other vehicles, objects, pets or children. The back up camera is an outstanding feature especially when hauling a utility trailer. It makes backing trailers up a breeze. The power train is adequate in the 3.5 liter engine but expect to give it some gas if you want to take off quickly.

I think the one most important thing that people should know about my vehicle is that the gas mileage is great.
I am very satisfied with my vehicle. I like the heated seats and steering wheel. I dislike the fact that I don't have a sunroof right now. No complaints with my vehicle.

Led screen is convenient, I use it for music, as navigation, back up camera.
There is a lot of space inside, it is very roomy. It drives comfortably and smooth. Picks up speed pretty quick for an SUV. The leather seats are very comfortable and have heat when its chilly. The only negative I've experienced is that my car did roll out of park after I parked and locked it. Had ford check this out and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. Hasn't happened again.

Family of 5 review for explorer.
The drive is really smooth and the car is very spacious. I easily can transport my 3 kids and pick up groceries. The back up cameras work very well, allowing me to see oncoming cars. The remote start allows me to get the car to the desired temperature before I enter the vehicle. I strongly recommend this vehicle to families looking for a safe and reliable car for their family.

Intelligent driving technology, great steering, with a sleek modern style.
I love my ford. It is sleek with all the bells and whistles standard. It handles well with a smooth ride. The ford explorer has 3rd row seating, plus the magic seats go down flat for a lot of truck storage. It is perfect for me and my busy family life.

That the Ford Explorer is American Made and trustworthy
Have been leasing the explorer for many years. Love that it is solid, trustworthy & American made. If I had to say one thing negative it would be the second row middle seat which is only large enough for a 5 year old.

All around great vehicle.
This is my 4th explorer I have owned and my favorite. This vehicle has the comfort and features that fit my lifestyle. One of my favorite features is the memory seating for when my husband drives it. Also this vehicle will go anywhere in the winter with snow and ice as well as off-road.

Updates that could be done.
Hard to keep the seats clean. And needs more get up and go. Needs brighter headlights. And needs more leg room for the third row seating. Would like if all seats were powers seats in the front of the car. Also needs better ground clearance on the car. Bigger wiper on the back glass. Driver seat needs more padding for more comfort.

Ford explorer is an awesome vehicle.
Its a very comfortable riding vehicle one of the best in my opinion of all available choices I had when I bought this vehicle really dependable enormous amount of space for passengers or cargo with the seats laying down the explorer will be my first option the next time I am in the market.

Great for large families!
Love this car! My husband had one as a company vehicle and we loved traveling in it with 4 kids. Everyone had space and was comfortable. The only downside is the gas mileage. It has a small tank and we average about 19 miles to the gallon. Fun driving car though..

Overall, my explorer was a great purchase.
I drive a base model 2018 ford explorer. I have yet to have any issues with it mechanically and have hit 20,000 miles. It has a good quality sound system for a base model. The screen for the backup camera is a little on the small side. The cloth seats are comfortable and the multi zone air conditioning is wonderful.
