2018 Ford F-150 Review: Comfortable Full Size Truck With Strong & Dependable Engine Choices

Alex Showalter
Dec 15, 2022

The 2018 Ford F-150 lasts around 250,000 miles with some average oil consumption and transmission software issues. At $27,545 to $64,079, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a very reliable truck with a high towing capacity.

All of the engines offer good power, the cabin is extremely comfortable and the Sync 3 stereo system is great.

The six-speed transmission is slow to change gears, the suspension is firm and advanced safety tech is only available on high-end models.

A black ford f-150 with 5 seats and a lot of space in the bed.
It is very comfortable and runs well. However, if you are short, it is harder to get into the truck. It is very spacious in the front, with a center console with lots of space. There is also a lot of space in the back, including three seats. The heated seats are also definitely a plus.

Fun truckin'! Try out one of these and you'll never look back!
This is a great truck-functional while still lots of fun to drive. I can tow if I need to but I can also get all dressed up and go to an event and it is more than just a pick-up. Love the heated and cooled seats and the remote start. Comes in real handy here in the northeast.

2018 Ford F-150 sets the bar
Absolutely love it! Great gas mileage for a truck thanks to the 10 speed EcoBoost v6. Is very spacious and comfortable, has lots of features available such as backup camera and seat warmers. Also it's useful because it's a truck and you can transport and haul

Great ride for a great price.
No complaints at all. It is a great truck to drive anywhere. Very comfortable especially with kids on long rides. Spacious.

Most spacious and reliable vehicle
I never thought I would be satisfied with a Ford. My 2018 F150 is the most amazing vehicle I've ever driven. It has an unbelievable amount of room in the cab, leg room for days in the back seat. It runs like a beast with its 5.0 V8. I have not had any problems with it at all yet.

A 2018 Ford F-150 stx with appearance package. 2.7 ecoboost
My 2018 Ford F-150 is a 4x4 super cab truck. It's the small ecoboost v6 but it flat out flies. It's bottom of the line package but has the appearance Stx package along with big screen display and tow assist. I love the fact it has vinyl flooring, makes it easy to clean and doesn't get that musty dirt smell that carpet does. The 10 speed transmission makes me nervous tho as it tends to shift hard in certain gears and acts as if it's confused to what gear it should be in. The dealership told me to run it until it goes whereas I have the lifetime powertrain warranty.

Nothing really. It is perfect.
The truck is a good work truck. Also a good family truck. Beach time is awesome. The only complaint I guess would be I wish it was a little nicer inside.

Nice look on outside, leave it at that....
Really wanted to love this truck, but alas...Ford ruined a good truck. Over priced robot truck with way too much electronics. A truck well north of $50,000 and no leather seats. Emergency brake is electronic, not manual...major mistake. Transmission has too many gears and cant find one it likes. Low speed traveling is pathetic. Transmission bangs, feels like it is beating itself to death. The dash screen fails ever 45 days. And of course it dies every time it stops...annoying as hell and that alone should be the reason to not buy it. Cabin space is nice and the outside look is sharp. But dont let that s**k you in. Buy something else until Ford gets back to building trucks and not robots and Big Brother tracking devices... If you sign up for FordPass, Big Brother can track how you drive this mechanical incompetent monster. Yippie!

Do Not pay for Sync, ask for money off the truck instead.
The Sync system is garbage. Just barely hit 39k miles and display wont even power up. Of course warranty lapsed at 36k. Ford will fix it if I pony up over $1600. It us a known issue and they sell it regardless. Now I have no backup camera, no radio, no entertainment, no clock... Nothing works in this truck now snd bring left high and dry. Screw Ford.... This is the last on I will buy. If you are at the dealership, they should give money back for having that piece if c**p installed. Go get an aftermarket unit installed asap!

My 2018 F150 always pulls to the left
This is my fourth F150, loved every one of them, except this one and the first one I really don't like. I bought this 2018 XLT 3.5 L, V6 Ecoboost Supercrew new in Feb of 2018. On the second day I noticed it always pulled to the left no matter whether the road crowns or is super flat. Took it back to the Ford dealership, they had it for a full day, did a test drive, and told me they did an alignment and rotated the tires, and they said there was nothing actually wrong with the truck, and that it will pull some because of these 275/55R All Terrain tires. Really !!?? Ok then it should pull to the right as often as to the left, but it doesn't do that, it always pulls to the left. A few weeks later I got so fed up with this pulling so I took it back again. And again same story, nothing wrong with the car. I need the truck for my daily work, so several months later I took the truck back again to the dealership, and this time I insisted on a test drive with the head mechanic before any work stated. He agreed that it pulled to the left much more than it should. This time the repair resulted in less pulling to the left but now there is a nasty vibration at 70-90 kms speed. Back to the dealer again, and again a test drive with the head mechanic, he said he did not feel any vibration. Really!!?? What does it take? He said that because of the government's directive to make cars and trucks more fuel efficient Ford came out with the 10-speed gearbox and that it will shift into a higher gear than it should at low speeds resulting in a "bit" of vibration "but that is normal". Really!!?? So why was there no vibration earlier with the pulling but now there is a vibration. Very Frustrated. Ok, now about that 10-speed gear box, I love the speed with which it excellerates, but it NEVER uses 2nd and 4th gears (unless you put it in Manual drive) so what is the benefit? Ok and don't get me started on the automatic engine shut-off at intersections, not my favorite> This has become a long rant, but I so loved my 2010, 2013 and my 2015 F150's that I am so surprised that this 2018 model is not "what it used to be". My advise? Wait untill Ford finally goes back to a 6-speed gearbox or maybe an 8-speed but the 10-speed is useless in my opinion. So there, I feel so much better now. :) My advice: don't buy

My new 2018 F150 with 6100 hundred miles on it is currently undergoing an oil consumption test to see if it uses more than 1 quart of oil in 3000 miles. Otherwise the truck is great.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford F-150?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Ford F-150 offers a nice mix of efficiency and performance with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Ford F-150 at 3.9/5, praising the excellent safety tech, but doesn’t like the rough suspension.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Ford F-150 a 4.6/5, enjoying the powerful engine choices, but owners don’t like the expensive purchase price.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Ford F-150 Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Ford F-150 include excessive oil consumption, slipping while changing gears, as well as damaged door latches. Overall, these problems are similar to other full size trucks, while the repair bills are lower as the trucks age.

Excessive oil consumption is the most widespread complaint on the 2018 Ford F-150 from owners at around 25,000 miles. There are some known issues with the PCV valve, as well as the engine management software. Replacing the PCV and updating the software costs $80 to $150, depending on local labor rates.

Slipping while changing gears has also been reported on some F-150 models with the ten-speed automatic transmission at around 5,000 miles. There are software updates for the transmission control module which improve the reliability of the transmission. Most dealerships will install software updates for free, while some may charge around $100.

Damaged door latches are an issue mentioned by owners in colder climates in the first 10,000 miles. In freezing temperatures, the latch assembly is known to freeze over, and cannot be opened. Using a hair dryer or heat gun can melt the ice on the latch to let you back into the truck. Some owners have also reported having a new latch installed by Ford which has a revised design which doesn’t freeze as easily.

There are 15 recalls on the 2018 Ford F-150, which is more than many other trucks. The most serious recall covers the fuel pump assembly welds, which can lead to fuel loss. Ford will replace the fuel pump and accessories on affected models for free. Many other recalls cover issues including lights, the tailgate, as well as tires which are less of a mechanical concern.

How Long Will the 2018 Ford F-150 Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Ford F-150 can last around 250,000 miles, which is shorter than the top-rated Toyota Tundra. Regular annual maintenance costs are cheaper than many other full size trucks, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $398 per year.

As a used 2018 Ford F-150 reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the intake manifold gasket for $700, a door lock actuator costing $200, as well as the mass airflow sensor, which costs $300.

accountCircle Ryan S

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2018 Ford F-150 since it comes with standard features including 4.2-inch display with Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety technology is better than many other trucks with a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane keep assist, blind spot information system, active park assist, front and rear parking sensors, inflatable rear seatbelts along with a 360-degree camera system.

Is the 2018 Ford F-150 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Ford F-150 is a good value since it offers very good reliability and a high towing capacity for the money. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $27,545 to $64,709, making it more expensive than a Chevy Silverado 1500 or Ram 1500. When new, the price range was $27,705 to $64,785. We recommend the Toyota Tundra as a used truck since there are less mechanical issues, although both are great trucks worth testing out.

The Ram 1500 is a competitor available for around $3,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Ram 1500, while the Ford F-150 has a higher towing capacity. We recommend the Ford F-150 since they are more affordable to own long-term, and have a better history of reliability.

I have a 2018 F-150 and it has been one of the worst vehicles I have ever owned. At 73k, the front hubs went out. It needed a new starter at the same point. We tow pretty regularly and the vehicle will not start after towing long distances, and it has been verified to be a truck issue and not a trailer issue. Quality truck that will last.
It has been super reliable with no issues since purchase. About to put on a new set of tires but aside from routine maintenance it has not needed much. Smooth ride, good mileage for a truck and a cozy can for both driver and passengers. Definitely worth a look if you are in the market.

Great truck until you take it off road.
The vehicle performs well and is decent on fuel. It has plenty of power with the v-8 engine for towing. It rides well and has a 550 mi. Range per tank of fuel. The only thing I have been unhappy about is it has very poor traction off road and in ice and snow. I would recommend four wheel drive.

My truck has great power under the hood and looks sharp on the road.
I do not like that the electronics are inconsistent. I plug in my phone to USB and sometimes it doesn't stay connected. I like that it is a v8 and has good power. I don't like that the doors have recall so much. But sometimes the exhaust acts funny, so I don't like that.

I cannot think of an interesting detail or highlight.
There are really no downsides to my vehicle other than I wish the radio quality was better and that it had better gas mileage. Other than that it is a great vehicle and I love everything about it. The vehicle runs great, is pretty and has a lift and all terrain tires which are really good here in Texas. The seats are comfortable and easy to change positions.

Truck is amazing. Tows well while hauling a dump trailer. Interior is unmatchable. The heated cooled and massaging seats are great. Truck does everything I need and want it to do. Only downfall I see on the truck is that I feel that it shifts to much in the lower gears but besides that the truck is a 10 of 10.

Great ride, great value, great product.
My f150 is great. Four door, very comfortable. Power windows and locks, tinted windows, sync system. Gets over twenty miles to the gallon. Cruise control, cloth seats. Very smooth ride. I would recommend a ford f150 to anybody. It also towers very well. My only complaint is the length of the bed. Because it is a four door, the bed is a little short.

It is very comfortable and runs well. However, if you are short, it is harder to get into the truck. It is very spacious in the front, with a center console with lots of space. There is also a lot of space in the back, including three seats. The heated seats are also definitely a plus.

I love the power I am not 1 to go slow if I need to pass someone I can with ease!
I haven't really had any problems with my 2018 f-150. I like that for the most part when I stop at a light or I am in traffic it shuts down to save on gas, sometimes it take several seconds and I noticed if you do not hit at least 5 mph in between stops or have the wheels straight it may not even shut down which does make me a little mad- especially in a fast food lines cause that makes your mpg change. I love that I have the extra seat so I can sit 6 instead of 5 including the driver. It has the back seats that lift up for extra space and it fits so much in there, plus I have my bed for round balls or hay for the horses. It hulls trailers and campers with ease. I personally get great gas mileage for the 5.0 302 v8 at 21.6 mpg and climbing!

I like all of the extras that come with my vehicle. I can talk to text and sync my phone with the truck so its hands free. It gets great gas mileage even with such a big motor in it. I'm not crazy about the drivers side and passenger door windows though. I feel like they come down too low on the door which doesn't allow for very much privacy in my own vehicle.
It's very easy to drive and gets great gas mileage.

The ups and downs of a ford owner.
Coming from someone who has grown up around ford's I have to say this truck is amazing! If you want a work truck this would be a good choice. My boyfriend is able to fit all of his tools inside, plenty of space, beautiful leather interior seats, and it runs like a champion. The only downfall we do not care for is the automatic transmission shut down to save gas, if anything it could put us in danger and it wastes gas more than it does saving it. Although we do not have cruise control on it. We still get good gas mileage when we travel.

Great truck for a family vehicle.
I really like the ford f-150. It has a lot of room in the rear for my three children and storage. I also like how it connects to iPhones and has a great interface with that for maps, music, phone calls, ect. The gas mileage is not bad on it either, better than my SUV.

All around nice truck 10 of 10 would recommend to people for the truck of choice.
Ford ecoboost motors have plenty of power for any type of towing needs. They ride extremely comfortable and the reliability is outstanding. Would recommend any type of f series pickup truck. In the winter time they tend to have door issues with the aluminum bodies but since they have issued a recall to revise the issue and have since taken care of the issues.

Radio computer dash problem.
My only complaint or problem is sometimes the radio will not turn on. This must be a computer brain problem where it is not relating the information properly. Other than this being the only problem, I am very satisfied with the truck and safety standards it has.

Trucks can be family vehicles.
We absolutely love our truck. It has ample space for our family and the dog. It rides comfortable as well. It has come in handy multiple times when hauling stuff. We always wanted a truck, but never realized how much we would love it or that it could be the perfect family vehicle.

Comfortable, safe, tons of interior room.
I love the interior space and comfort of my truck. It has a larger cab than most trucks in its class but rides comfortably. My favorite feature is the keyless door entry keypad. It makes it much easier for my kids to access my vehicle without worrying that they may lose my key. If I could change one thing, I wish there was a way to deactivate the auto stop - start feature. It is inconvenient at times, for example in the line to drop my children off at school. It is frustrating to have to push the button to deactivate this feature every time the vehicle starts. I feel safe and comfortable and enjoy driving this vehicle.

Rides like a car, functions like a truck.
I love the truck. I only wish the brakes lasted longer. The ride and functionality are perfect. I rides like a car and functions like a truck. All of the other features on the truck are that of a luxury vehicle. There have been a few recall issues but those were solved quickly.

My review is good about this vehicle.
There is no such problem in this vehicle, performance is good, it is very reliable, this is very comfortable to my wife and child. Like it very much. Features of this vehicle are too good. Some features is very special for me. After all this vehicle is very good.

The backseat has so much leg room.
My truck is great for hauling. You sit up high & can see all around you: there really is not a blind spot. It is great for the winter driving. I would recommend it to people that live in the country. It also gets great gas mileage. It is a great size to park in a parking spot as well.

America’s’ truck for the working man or any man.
As far as space ford knocked it out the park. Has plenty of power and speed for anyone out there. Ford made a truck that is nice but not too flashy to where your scared do.Well truck stuff. The gas mileage is amazing for a full size 4 wheel drive truck I am hitting around 18 I would say and just the overall comfort while driving is great.

Family truck that both husband loves and wife feels safe driving.
The truck feels strong and sturdy. It is also very spacious even while having two bulky car seats. The features are great and I particularly like the Bluetooth feature and the backing cameras. Another feature I love about the truck is the ac works almost instantly. I would recommend this to any family.

F-150 is the truck for me.
This truck provides ultimate comfort! The cabin is extremely spacious and seats fold up for more storage. Deep bed to hold lots during moving or camping. The perfect vehicle for any weather. The exterior grill is my favorite part. The interior is clean and well thought. Couldn't recommend more.

Heated seats and touch screen are the best.
I have not experienced any problems with the vehicle besides ones I caused myself. If I was wearing cheap, china’s flip flops sometimes it was harder to hit the brake. Everything else about it is great. I love the heated seats, the fact that they go up the back and not just on the bottom got me right away. I like the easy touch screen for using radio, navigation, etc.

Great truck, great price, very reliable.
I had a problem with the front drivers side wheel hub. It was making very loud noise so I took the truck to the dealer. The wheel hub was replaced under warranty so I was not too concerned about this part failing so soon. O also had a small paint defect on the roof of the vehicle but this was repaired on warranty also. Otherwise I have had no problems. I enjoy driving this vehicle everyday. I love the 3.3 liter naturally aspirated v6 engine. It is very reliable and has been around for a long time. This engine also has nearly 300 horsepower, a lot for a v6.

A great looking workhorse.
This vehicle is well built. It is made like a truck, but it is ride is as smooth any car I have driven. It is got great towing capacity. I have towed boats and trailers with it, I have gotten great gas mileage with this truck. A v-6 engine. It is got a six passenger carrying capacity, which is great for my family. I love the paint color, style, and design.

I love my ford f150, will always drive a ford.
Love the interior, love the handling of the vehicle. It rides smooth, have never had an issue with the engine or any of the internal parts. Would recommend to anyone, have had ford f-150s my whole life. Fords are very reliable, and look good on the road.

Review for ford f150 v6 ecoboost.
Haven't had any issues with it.It has performed exceptionally well since I bought it, even though it's a vehicle I drive every day of the week, to and from work. I will definitely buy it again. It's also the v6 ecoboost option, since I don't really use it for towing.

My 2018 f150 2.7 liter after 18,000 miles.
So far, I've only put on 18,000 miles on my 2018 f150 2.7 liter. It's got a very nice 6.5 foot bed and I've done a lot of upgrades myself. I recommend putting on tow package mirrors to lesson the blind spots, and some running boards. I have not had any issues with the drivetrain, engine, or transmission. The 10 speed transmission is very seamless and performs well. The turbo is small but definitely gets you going very quick. The only issue I have is it is very difficult to an aftermarket subwoofer connected to the factory-installed sync three. I wish they had a connector easily accessible under the driver side dash so its more plug and play user friendly but you have to tear the dash apart and add a device to then you have to connect that device to a amplifier. All in all it's a great truck and has performed very well.

Great family truck for families with young kids.
We have had no issues in the two years we've had our truck. The backseat is big, and comfortably fits two car seats with room for someone in the middle. We've taken several long distance trips in this truck with zero complaints from the kids. It is great.

Love a good f-150! She's my black betty!
Thus far this truck has been exactly what I was looking for! Better than expected gas mileage considering it has the 5.0l engine. It has been able to haul/tow anything I have used it for. Runs great, looks great, feels great. The only thing I am not a fan of is the bench seat in the front. I would have preferred a center console but I was buying used and for the price I got it for I was able to look past it.

Recommend ford f150 ecoboost truck.
I enjoy my ford f150. I have had no issues or problems. I like the performance and gas mileage. It is fun to drive, haulers and pulls my trailer and boat with ease. The ecoboost engine is powerful linked with the 10 speed transmission. Interior is comfortable and controls are easy to reach and control.

Ford f-150 truck that is very roomy.
The ford f-150 king ranch truck is a reliable vehicle. It has smart technology with a keyless entry. The seats are comfortable and roomy with heating and air conditioning seating options. The back row has ample leg room and airbag inflatable seats belts for.

This is a reliable, heavy-duty vehicle, that actually gets great gas mileage for a full size truck.
We love the overall styling of our vehicle. The color is Guard, which is a cross between green and gray, and it's beautiful. We do NOT like the cup holders, which are both on the passenger side of the console.

Best Truck I have ever ridden in.
Amazing truck. So many cool and useful features. It has enough power to pull out 42 foot long trailer without issues. Enough seats for my family plus enough room to fit very comfortably.
accountCircle Amanda C on March 19, 2021
Ford 150 is a great truck very convenient especially for heavy duty jobs.
There are not that many problems with my ford but I can definitely say if you are not a person used to big cars, I think it's safe to say from my experience that it's going to be a challenge getting used to a big car. Especially with my ford, it's very wide, and has a lot of power. It's very spacious inside, it was recommended by a friend of mine who owns a ford truck as well. The interior is beautiful, has heated seats which comes handy during the winter.
