2020 Ford F-150 Review: Reliable Large Truck With Reasonable Ownership Costs As It Ages

Alex Showalter
Apr 1, 2023

The 2020 Ford F-150 lasts 250,000 miles with some wiring and engine issues reported. At $32,990 to $64,150, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a great full size truck with a high towing capacity and a spacious cabin.

likeFilled The Good
The engines all offer great power, the towing capacity is higher than other trucks and off-road performance is great with the 4WD system.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engines are not as efficient as some competitors, the suspension gives it a bouncy ride and fuel costs are high.

Is the 2020 Ford F-150 a Good Used Truck?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2020 is a great year for the Ford F-150 since it’s very capable off-road with a high towing capacity as well. Owner reviews praise the comfortable seats, smooth suspension, along with the efficient engine options.

Ford opinion in Texas. Possible changes. Marketplace.
Texas truck that is sits high, looks good and can do anything. Just the name you mow it is good. Do not change the body a style. And if you do slimmer is better. Maybe change the grill to the retro, as opposed to the panel style. The limited time editions are cool, with the performance packages.

Power truck for everyday use.
High performance truck with many features. Better on gas mileage than some but that is expected with a truck. This truck has a high and powerful towing capacity that is helpful for weekend projects. Off-roading is extremely enjoying in this vehicle and safe and dependable.

Ford 150 platinum - luxury truck.
Ford 150 platinum is a great truck. Very roomy inside and a nice interior package. The sync radio system is awesome and the truck handles and drives well. Fuel economy is good for a truck this size. The engine is very powerful. One drawback, I do not care for the fuel saver feature that turns off the vehicle when idling ( to save money). Not sure how much fuel it saves annually versus the wear and tear of the starter. I really enjoy the massage and heated seats in the truck and the sun/moon roof is nice. I highly recommend this truck.

You will not regret owning a 2020 f150.
This is my third f150 and so far has been my favorite. I went with the 3.5l engine and have no regrets. This 6cyl packs a punch. Best truck I have ever towed with. Drives like a car but functions as a truck. Comfort roomy interior is great for getting the boys together and heading to the ball game.

Made for family trips around town or out of town.
This car is really great for families and dog owners. We take long trips frequently and have plenty of space for a car seat, a large dog and all our luggage. I also feel extremely safe in the vehicle when on the highway. Only downside is it is not short person friendly. I am under 5 ft tall and the seat can be a little uncomfortable at times. But my 6’3” husband is just fine in it.

Is it worth buying a raptor.
I drive a lot, got it with 4 miles on it, already done 7k in 3 months, no issues, just oil change and general car care, super comfortable to drive, very fast does not even have to try to reach 95 and maintain, best sound system I have ever experienced and cannot complain about being able to go off road anytime I want and never worry about a thing!

So much space and the most comfortable ride.
I love this truck, the only thing I would do different is add a DVD player for long rides with the kids. We have 3 big boys and they fit comfortably in the back with a lot of legroom. We are able to easily tow our race car with all the added weight of the car, wheels, tires, tools, compressor and generator. The sheets fold up in the back which makes for easier vacuuming.

Awesome truck for the money.
Other than the ridiculous automatic start stop switch, I absolutely love the truck. Drives smooth with great power and decent fuel economy. Interior has lots of room and it is a great looking truck with the black appearance package. 4 wheel drive is easy to use and it has a nice electronics package.

Not worth money
V8 is sluggish off the line, don't pull out in traffic. Computer system gps etc has not worked properly since I got it. Trying to get it serviced from where I brought is even worse. The quality and service by Ford has gone downhill.

Porpoising while towing
I traded my 2012 F-150 for a new 2020 F-150. Both had the ecoboost engines. The 2012 towed a 6500# trailer just fine but my 2020 porpoises badly when towing the exact same trailer with the exact same sway bars on it. Porpoising a big problem with the new F-150's not sure if its the reduced vehicle weight or they just went cheap on the shocks/struts. Very unhappy. Don't waste you money spend a little more and get a F-250 if you intend on towing anything greater than say 4000#.

Good truck just right for two people.
It gets really good gas mileage for a truck. Traveling is hard when it rains because luggage has to go in the truck bed. The hard suitcases get all wet. Plus there is no room for more than two people. SUVs are better for kids since there are more legroom and seats.

F150 is a fantastic truck!
My f150 is a great truck! I am 6'5 and it fits me well. It is performance is great in eco and sport modes and it has been very reliable. I commute in it and hardly realize I am in a truck because the gas mileage is so good and it is very safe due to the size.

Good at getting around, has an amazing engine with impeccable drive train.
Sometimes the car breaks down. It is reliable in the way it gets through the mud, but that is about it boys. I try to deal with the fact that somebody has a Chevy out there getting through more mud than I am.. It is a shame honestly. I wish I would have just bought a van and closed the deal but my wife insisted I get the f 150 to get through all the mud. Good choice jacky.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford F-150?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Ford F-150 offers good efficiency and performance with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2020 F-150 at 3.6/5, praising the safety technology but doesn’t like the rough suspension.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Ford F-150 Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Ford F-150 include rodents chewing the soy-based wiring, the engine stalling, along with some Bluetooth connectivity issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other large size trucks on the market, leading to average repair costs as the F-150 ages.

Rodents chewing on the soy-based wiring is the most widespread complaint from 2020 F-150 owners in the first 20,000 miles. The smell of the coating on the wire attracts rodents, which then chew and destroy parts of it. Repairing the wiring harness can cost $50 to $2,000 depending on severity. Installing an ultrasonic strobe light can help deter rodents if you have to park outside overnight.

The engine stalling is another issue on some F-150 models with the 3.5L V6 engine. There are still some cam phaser issues on the F-150, although they’re not as widespread as in earlier years. Replacing the cam phasers costs $500 to $1,000, depending on local labor rates.

Bluetooth connectivity issues have also been reported on the 2020 F-150 in the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improves the reliability of the Bluetooth system. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while some charge around $50.

There are 8 recalls on the 2020 Ford F-150, which is similar to other large trucks on the market. The most serious recall is for the power supply cable which may be incorrectly attached to the starter. Ford will re-install the cable on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the rearview camera, along with the lights.

How Long Will the 2020 Ford F-150 Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Ford F-150 can last over 250,000 miles, which is only slightly shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Tundra. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other full size trucks, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $680 per year.

As a used 2020 Ford F-150 reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the battery cable for $650, a water pump costing $800, along with the coolant reservoir which costs around $550.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is basic on the entry-level XL model, which has a 4.2-inch screen. The XLT and higher models come standard with the great 8-inch touchscreen with Ford’s Sync 3 software. Optional upgrades include more powerful stereo systems.

Standard safety technology is good for a large truck offering:

  • Rearview camera
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Forward collision warning

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Lane departure warning with lane keep assist
  • Hands-free parallel park assist
  • Blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control

Is the 2020 Ford F-150 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Ford F-150 is a good value since it’s a capable truck with good reliability ratings as it ages. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $32,990 to $64,150, making it more than a Ram 1500 or Chevy Silverado 1500. When new, the retail price range was $32,145 to $57,515. Depreciation in current market conditions is nonexistent, although in normal market situations we expect it to lose about 5% of its current value per year.

F-150 XLT - Average Truck at Best
Most reviews on this site were submitted when the owner's 2020 F150 was new. Mine now has 50K miles and I find it average at best. It runs well and has good power. I find that the door pillars create rather wide blind spots. I've had more than one vehicle hide behind them. I've had the transmission reprogrammed twice due to less than smooth shifting. It's supposed to learn your driving habits. I think it's a slow learner. I had one drive train issue repaired under the 60K mile drive train warranty. Ford could not supply headlight assemblies or a bumper so the body shop had to install after market parts in November 2022 (grilled a deer). Now the Ford SYNC 3 computer (APIM) stopped functioning 6 weeks ago. The Ford Sync support people said a new firmware version would be available to solve my infotainment system issues. It was never released. I finally took it to the dealer who told me the APIM needs to be replaced. The only problem is that the APIM is on indefinite nationwide backorder (yet they're for sale on Amazon and Ebay)..... Until then sometimes I can link my phone sometimes I can't, sometimes I can't turn off the radio, some days some buttons work then they don't. Once in a while, the backup camera pops u[p when I'm tooling down the road. Not certain I'd purchase another F150????

Ford makes great performing vehicles.
Very great comfort; plenty of inside room; four by four, and has plenty of power, especially when starting off. So far, I have not had any issues with performance. I use it constantly and still maintains perfect, like the first day I drove it. Ford makes good trucks.

Never worry when using ford f150.
Ford f150 is the best car I've used ever since I started operating on automobile. I use a raptor because I can use it both of rough areas and smooth areas. Overtime, I've not had any visible issues with it. It's great at travelling on long distance journey. I believe I made a perfect choice because on seeing its performance convinced my friend and brother to get one for themselves. Comfortability of the f-150.
The truck is great but the ride is a little bumpy. It starts to get bumpy when driving or coasting along the highway at around 70 mph. The backseat is also a little uncomfortable compared to other truck models such as the Chevy Silverado 1500. Other than that I love it.

The unmatched comfort and safety of the 2020 f-150.
I absolutely love my f-150. The seats are some of the most comfortable I have sat in. I deal with back pain, especially on long road trips. The lumbar support in this vehicle has been truly life changing for me. The truck sits tall on the road and provides me with a great sense of safety on the highway. My only complaint is with the touchscreen system. It runs very slowly when the car first starts and can be extremely glitchy until it is been running for a few minutes.

Runs very smoothly, touch screen which includes Bluetooth, GPS, and even Pandora as an app. My vehicle also has a pre-collision alert feature which is super cool and how it works is that if for some reason I am not paying attention and a car merges into my lane, it begins to beep loudly and starts to brake for me to avoid a collision!

It is actually been a blessing since I found the different modes you can drive in for every type of natural occurrence of weather you can think of the truck handles at all. I found the start from your phone through ford pass is actually the coolest feature I have seen yet I cannot wait to see what ford does with the electric f-150 next year I cannot wait I wish it was now. Overall the gas mileage has been better than expected everything was so customizable all you have to do is basically look at pictures and you'll see exactly what you need to do. I believe ford is going to make a huge comeback because it is American-made and that is what we need now more than ever is to invest in ourselves.

Amazing truck! Not only comfy and breathable, but also extremely reliable!
This truck is amazing! Not only does the interior look lovely, but when you take long road trips, unlike other cars, your back does not hurt! Also, the seats are very breathable for the days I am wearing skinny jeans and y'all know what happens. This truck is also very reliable! This car has not broken down, glitched, or anything. When it is snowing or raining out, you can count on this truck to get you through it. And when the roads are bumpy or just old, the truck smoothes the bumps out on you so you won't feel it as much! Definitely makes me less car sick!

F-150 XLT sport - the last vehicle I will ever drive.
This truck is extremely spacious, looks sporty, and has a tremendous performance level. It has all the ability to tow anything you need but can also be used for many different functional aspects. I have a dog and it is the perfect vehicle for transporting her while keeping her safe. The backseat on the four door is extremely spacious, I can fit 5 people in the back seat and one in the front. The truck bed is extremely functional as well. I will never drive another truck for the rest of my life.

It is a great realizable, spacious, and energy efficient truck.
The truck is very realizable, and it is a hybrid so it uses a lot less gas than older model f150s. It is very spacious inside, especially in the back seat. The truck is very comfortable, with plenty of leg room. I wish it were updated more with technology such as automatic seats or heated seats, but the chairs are cloth so I guess it works. Be sure to get a truck with running boards because it is a high jump into the truck.

Stx is a great value. You are buying base xl but getting features of upper trims.
Love the f-150 stx. Not the biggest fan of the 2.7 liter v6 ecoboost engine. Wish I would have gone with the 5.0 liter v8 engine. Interior panels seem cheap. I haven't had any issues besides a sensor on the night I brought it home. Dealer fixed it for me the next day. So far it is been reliable. It is fairly good on gas.

Ford f-150! Ford has done it again!
It has ecoboost! Different driving settings like snow and wet or mud and haul. It is very good on gas so far I haven't put in anything over 45 bucks for a full tank. It has a five point engine in it. The back seats are very spacious. It is a great family car!

Description of f-150 truck.
The truck’s electronics really make driving easy. It has comfortable seating and great control and reliability. I have enjoyed the included SiriusXM trial. CarPlay helps me complete task on the road via phone. The interior design is beautiful and sleek. The bed of the truck is durable and useful.

Great performance and comfort.
Ford f-150 is a great vehicle! It is well constructed and mechanically sound. I have owned it for 6 months and am very pleased with the performance so far. The interior is very comfortable and makes you feel as if you are sitting on plush seats. I look forward to many years in this vehicle.

In summarizing I would say ford pickups are well worth the money.
My f150 is a very good vehicle I have had no issues with it so far. It is a very comfortable riding truck as well as very fuel efficient the extra features like the back up camera and towing are very easy to use. I have been on a couple vacations with it and it seems to be very fuel efficient.

Luxurious and functional. Safety features parents can enjoy.
No problems at all I love it. Everything about it is functional and luxury. It is very expensive but well worth it. The safety features alone make it worth every penny. I also love the added features such as cameras and lane corrections. We opted for the sunroof which is also fun for my kids.

Ford f150 stx/XLT the best all around.
I have had no trouble with my f150 would recommend anyone buy a f150 XLT pickup. The 5.0 v8 motor is a get up and go motor with tow haul makes pulling anything a breeze. The reliability of the truck is a 10/10 everything on the truck is top notch. Anyone looking to buy one go for.

It has heated seats and an app to start and lock/unlock.
My truck is awesome. Great torque and power. Comfortable. Transmission is not the best but nothing I can do about that. Clean reliable. Bought for a good price. Drive to everyday. Bought in mt and drove it across country to VT. I am in love with this truck.

I like the design and the skylight.
I have had a few issues with the key not working. My dog sets off the alarm easily. Keys in my pocket set off the alarm. Turn radius is not very good. The pre-collision assist is inaccurate, thinks you will hit something when you will not. The automatic windshield wipers go on at weird speeds.

My special 2020 ford f-150.
My ford f-150 is big and white. Everything is electric, even the cover for the back of it. My favorite is the giant sunroof. The heated and cooling seats are a big plus! It is very large on the inside and has a lot of extra space. You could actually live in that thing!

The most interesting detail is my texts come through my radio and are read to me.
It handles nice on road. So quiet. I have always wanted an f150 and got a great deal on it so I am leasing for 2 years. Can't say anything bad about the truck. It has a lot of good features including navigation. Backup camera. Automatic headlights that switch from brights to normal.

2020 ford f-150 crew cab stx.
This truck has plenty of power with ford's 5.0 liter v-8 and 10 speed automatic transmission. The cab has a tremendous amount of legroom and the rear seats easily fold up to allow room for pets or other equipment the truck has automatic high/low beams, XM radio, and Bluetooth capability. There has been a recall on the backup camera.

The spacious interior and the overall look of the exterior.
I absolutely love my raptor. I have not experienced any issues with it so far. The exterior, the interior, both are high quality. I love the overall design and style, and it makes me feel on top of the world. The color and shine of the exterior paint is out of this world. The interior is extremely spacious and comfortable as well.

Absolutely love it, minimal issues.
Rear camera issues at 1700 miles- specifically the tailgate camera intermittently going in and out. Recall on a transmission sleeve- a week after purchase. Other than that, I absolutely love the look, comfort level, features, quality and performance of the raptor.

Great prices very spacious inside.
It is a very great new truck and with all the rebates to was a great price. Blogs bank of camera very roomy back seat in front seat. And the sales team was very helpful in assisting me and getting me good price. I would definitely go back to ford Red McCombs in the near future.

Love my new ford f-150 truck. It is amazing!!
The only problem that I see right now that can maybe cause a problem later on. Is that the vehicle shuts off everytime you stop for awhile at a light, etc and turns back on when you leaving. I love the drive and other features of the vehicle. The back seat has lots of legroom wish is a plus on long road trips.

These trucks are like driving a nice car. Quiet, like the color,
This is my 3rd F150, last one was a 2013 Lariat with the Eco-boost and it pulled my 17.5 inch boat better than the 5.4 in the previous F150. Now i have the 2020 XLT, 157 inch wheelbase with about 2100 miles on it and am getting 17 plus in town. Haven't had it pull the boat yet but i think its going to do just fine (10 more hp and 10 speed tranny now). My 2013 had 85000 on it and the dealer gave me 21500 plus all the other discounts they have right now, got a new truck for less than 21K. Happy camper i am.

3.5 liter ecoboost, an engine with a lot to love!
I love it. I have owned 3 other f-150’s, all with 8 cylinder engines. My current f-150 has 3.5 liter ecoboost and it is fantastic! Has just as much, maybe more, power than the v-8. It is comfortable, spacious, and packed with well thought out features. I also have the extended range tank, which allows me to go 500-600 miles per tank.

Roomy interior with great acceleration.
Our 2020 ford f-150 has been amazing. It has a v6 turbo, so it has the power of a larger engine without the gas hog part. The acceleration is amazing and the large windows really make you feel like you are on top of the world. Our truck is black which does seem to show every speck of dust or dirt that gets on it, so if you do choose a darker color, be sure to keep that in mind. I absolutely love the large back seat. I have never seen so much room in a vehicle. This is especially great for us as we have a child and two dogs and all of them fit in the back seat with room to spare.

Easy for everyone to drive.
This is the 4th ford f-150 that we have owned. We upgraded from the xlt to the lariat and love it. We use it for our main vehicle because the ride is smoother than my suv. I love the backup camera! I am only 5’2” and I can easily drive this truck. The seats automatically adjust to my preset adjustments when I get behind the wheel. With 3 presets, my husband uses one, I use one and our grandson uses the 3rd preset. The automatic trailer backup feature has come in handy for the trailer my grandson uses for his grass cutting business.

I love the overall power / pickup that the motor.
Ford makes the best truck for the money hands down. I have bought nothing but fords since I purchased a dodge one and had nothing but problems with it. The ford tow and haul capacity are much better than the other major brand trucks. Do yourself a favor and go and get a ford truck!

The ride that I have always wanted.
It is comfortable, the a/c works great, even the seats are cooled, nice driving ability and gas mileage. Good rear backup camera. Roomy on the inside and in the tailgate, it came with running boards already. No major problems yet. Haven't towed anything yet, but will use it eventually.

My favorite part about it is the sunroof and how large. It is.
The truck as a whole is a very comfortable and reliable truck as it can be used in many different ways while still being in the comfort of a leather seat with nice fe Azores to fit your need. The truck comes stocked with seat coolers and heaters and the automatic seats help get that seat posture just right. The backup camera is very high quality and can see clear as day during the night. The truck is also very good for off roading in such terrain like mud and sand.

F-150 review by a real person.
This truck is great, very reliable, and fun to drive. It goes fast on the highway. Transmission is great with this engine. Heat and air conditioning work well. Music and sound system is great. I would also like to add that I can fit a lot of items in the back storage area of the truck.
accountCircle Austin W on November 27, 2020
Sports truck with great comfort.
It performs well I like the way that the seats are built. It has great steering but that is because it is the sports mode of the f 150. I have the white exterior with the black interior. The cloth seats are not my favorite but they are nice in the summer. There is plenty of room in the back and the front. There are a bunch of seats and I even have a third one in the front seat. It folds up. The truck gets good gas mileage. I would recommend this to many other people and I think that they would like it.

19 miles per gallon is a huge benefit.
None problem, I enjoy this vehicle very much, extremely reliable super comfortable, the 36 gallon tank is very important to me. The 3,5 ecoboost engine is fast and responsive. I have been a ford truck person for over 20 years! The technology in the vehicles to are great but can get very expensive.
