The 2009 Focus can last over 250,000 miles with only some alignment and general fit & finish issues. At $4,742 – 5,485, it’s an affordable compact car we recommend.

The SYNC infotainment system is easy to use, cargo space is good and the steering is responsive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s a lot of plastic in the cabin, no powerful engines are offered and the backseats are firm.

Is the 2009 Ford Focus a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2009 is a good year for the Focus. Owner reviews enjoy the compact size, long-lasting engine, and exterior design.
  • Reliability ratings are above average. Models from 20082011 are good with a surge in problems for 2012.
  • Performance is weak from the 4-cylinder engine.
  • The Focus is reasonably safe for a compact car, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is good, at up to 28 MPG combined.

The car gets outstanding mpg. That car currently has 230k miles in it. The only maintenance I have done to it were oil changes. I do not dislike the vehicle at all.

It is a very good and reliable car.
I haven't had any problems with the vehicle. It runs great. It is very reliable. Gets me from point A to point B. It is very comfortable and I just love the car. The car came with the normal radio and all that. If need parts very easy to find and easy to fix.

This car has had so many issues there isn't much or really anything i like about it. It drives hard and breaks down a lot

That it's not worth the money and unreliable. Does not live up to the standard.
My car is small and horrible in the winter. It's poor on gas. I like the color of the car.
accountCircle Kristol M
Not a family car butt a good point A to point B.
It does not have electric windows or doors locks. The back seat does not have a lot of legroom for anyone who wants to sit back there that is taller than 4 feet. The front seat is not any better. It is an ok car to get to point A to point B but I do not recommend it for someone that has a family.

2009 Ford Focus. Great first car. It's compact sedan with 4 doors.
It has no air conditioner right now and giving me a lot of problems. It's time for something new. I wish I could afford something new but would just be happy with air conditioning. Other than that it has served its purpose. It has four new tires and motor.
accountCircle Sherrie S
Don't trust Ford on their claims of MPG without doing research first.
It is terrible on MPG! Not as advertised on 30 mpg. I only get maybe 26 mpg on the highway less on driving in the city.
accountCircle Stacy K
The Cons of the Ford Focus.
The car gets terrible gas mileage. The windshield keeps cracking. The car vibrates and runs ruff. A/c is terrible. Seats are very uncomfortable. There is no trunk release button on the interior of the car. So if you lose the key fob you have to turn off the car to use the key to access the trunk.
accountCircle Pat F
There are plenty of defects in the vehicle.
There have been a variety of call backs and recalls with the Ford Focus model I own. It is efficient of mpg.
accountCircle Kate A
First year ford focus car.
It's a great commuter car and gets decent gas mileage. When it's hot, the door stick and you can't open them from the inside or outside. The car makes a lot of noise and the engine just recently blew a piston. Overall it is not a bad car, especially for a first car.

What Do Critics Say About the Focus?

  • Consumer Reports likes the agile handling, and owner satisfaction scores are average.
  • Edmunds gives the Focus a 4.4/5 liking the infotainment system, but disliking the cheap interior.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Focus 4.6/5 and enjoy the reliable engine, but dislike the dated styling.

What Common Problems Does the 2009 Ford Focus Have?

Problems found on the 2009 Focus are fairly minor including uneven tire wear, loose carpet, and door lock failures.

Uneven tire wear is the most common complaint from owners at around 25,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by alignment issues, which cost about $250 to fix.

Loose carpeting is an issue mentioned by owners at around 10,000 miles. The carpet pulls loose from the trim panels, and a lot of owners glue down the peeling edge to solve the issue.

Failing door locks is another problem that shows up at around 60,000 miles. Replacing the door lock actuators fixes the problem, but costs around $500 depending on local labor rates.

There’s only 1 minor recall covering an interlock belt and is not a big concern.

How Long Will the 2009 Ford Focus Last?

A properly maintained 2009 Ford Focus will last around 250,000 miles, similar to a popular competitor like the Hyundai Elantra. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to rivals, at $459 per year, according to data from Repair Pal.

Most 2009 Focus models will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace the knock sensor for $250, oil pan costing $500, and the muffler which costs $525.

accountCircle Selena T

It is somewhat reliable. It is a used car and some parts are janky but it runs well for the most part.

accountCircle W B

It is pretty reliable. There are really no issues with it. There are basic touch ups and service I have to do on it but nothing serious.

accountCircle Jennifer B

My focus is reliable and so far it had not had any major problems just regular maintenance like replace brakes and oil changes.

accountCircle Stephanie S

Yes. I do not have any problems. I find it easy to drive and works well. I really appreciate not having problems with the car.

accountCircle Danelle N

Motor mounts and starters are known for going out in '09 focuses - both of which I have experienced. Regardless of that, I feel like my car has been extremely reliable over the years.

accountCircle Tiffiny A

I have regular maintenance type issues but no real problems. I put a beating on my car and she's never let me down. Best car I have had.

accountCircle Hanna D

The 2009 ford focus se had been pretty reliable! The only problem I have experienced is with the car key ignition. It gets a bit stuck sometimes; however, I simply have to push my key in a bit harder for it to work, so it is not too big of a problem.

accountCircle Audrey G

The only problems I've faced have been minor front end issues and the side panels on the front doors rotting from NY weather and road salt.

How Much Is the 2009 Ford Focus Worth?

Blue book values range from $4,742 – 5,485, which makes the Focus about $1,500 less than a Honda Civic or Mazda3. When new, the price range was $15,520 to $18,265. Depreciation is similar to rivals, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Focus?

There are four models of the Focus offered. Technology was last updated for the 2008 model year, with a complete redesign coming in 2012.

S is the entry-level model with:

  • 15-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating

  • 4-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX

SE is a step up adding features such as:

  • Power Windows & Locks

  • Satellite Radio

SES is next in the lineup and adds:

What Engines Come In the Focus?

The engine found in the 2009 Ford Focus is an average 2.0L 4-cylinder making 140 horsepower while getting up to 28 MPG combined. Performance is average, taking 8.1 seconds to go from 0 to 60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Focus Come In?

How Big Is the Focus?

The 2009 Focus is an average sized compact car offered as a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan and is similar in size to the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Passenger room is very good throughout the cabin, with more legroom in the backseats than rivals.

Cargo space is similar to a lot of other compact cars, with 13.8 cubic feet of room in the trunk.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Focus Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Fusion is a popular rival, which costs about $1,300 more. Passenger space and interior materials are better in the Fusion, but the Focus is more responsive to drive. We recommend the Fusion since the prices and reliability ratings are close and you get a more practical car.

The Mazda3 is another competitor, which costs around $1,400 more. Performance is better in the Mazda3, but the SYNC infotainment system is better in the Focus. We recommend the Mazda3 since they are a higher quality car for the price.

149,000 miles and still going well
I bought mine used as a one owner car with a manual transmission at 103,000 miles. I now have close to 150k. I am fairly impressed. The 5 speed manual transmission gets the most of the 142 HP Duratec 2 litre engine. Brakes are so so but stop the car. I have pretty good mechanical skills so I've replaced the leaky valve cover gasket, engine mounts, and the clouded plastic headlights as well as the spark plugs and ignition coils. All easy stuff. I've had my garage replace transmission gear oil with the Ford stuff and flush and refill the cooling system with Ford orange coolant as well as front struts rear shocks and a master brake cylinder and one front caliper. All stuff you'd expect on a car with over 100k in daily service. Car gets 38-41 on the freeway consistently, has a awesome factory sound system and heater and AC system. It does have many buzzes and rattles in the dash with all the plastic, but nothing that can't be silenced with some padding here and there. I've owned many higher end cars and I like this one quite a bit. It runs like a top and is comfy for a 6 foot plus middle aged guy. It's a shame Ford stopped making the Focus. It was a good car ruined by a bad semi auto transmission in the later versions after 2012.
accountCircle Kordell scigliano on September 5, 2022
It's a good car
The only problems I have had with the car is the front end tire wear the stablizer bars make it sound like the car is falling apart aftermarket ones fixed that problem and the door locks and door handles breaking and doors will not open some times other than that it'sa great car Ihave the se it's. Got cruise control power windows power locks air conditioning am fm cd and satlite stero and is comfortable to drive could use a little more power too it'snot one to jump up to sixty very fast

Very satisfied with my little car.
It's a Ford and mine is the SE so lots of plastic in the interior and it rattles a lot especially when you turn up the stereo. The rear wheels have drum brakes. The locking mechanism on the driver door somehow got disconnected and I have to manually lock and unlock it.I'm 6'4” and there is nota lot of room my seat is all the way back and it touches the back seat. AC sucks. But don't get me wrong for I really like my car. It's dependable, gets good gas mileage and is cheap to insure.

2009 ford focus is a great car!
Love my ford focus! The car is the perfect size, not too big but not too small. It rides smoothly, and it is not too loud. I bought it used and haven't had any problems with my vehicle. It is very reliable. Good on gas mileage, I can get about thirty two miles per gallon. My favorite features are the bluetooth calling feature and heated seats.

Best car for new drivers!
This car is one of the best! The interior is very comfy and it is always important to drive comfortably. This car has very little blind spots so it is a great car for those learning to drive or new drivers. I have had no mechanical issues with my car personally so that is great. The gas mileage is by far the best part!

It's a great first car. Not the greatest for the winter/ snow/ ice but still a valuable buy
Great vehicle, especially for a first car, which mine was. Its compact but still can fit a lot more that is appears. It's a poor ride for heavy winters which I have been in over that last few seasons, I got through but a car better suited for the weather would have been easier
accountCircle Christian T on March 20, 2021
Ford focus summary - over 100,000 miles has issues
After 100,000 miles it began to have transmission problems. It was worked on but the people who fixed it didn't do a very good job and now it jitters in certain areas. When it was under 100,000 there weren't any issues with it. I wouldn't recommend a ford though
accountCircle Robyn B on March 18, 2021
Ford has made a believer out of me for American made products the last.
What I love most is the excellent gas mileage. The easy of drive and controlled handling in all weather issues. I am a fan of the compact size which allows me to fit in any parking spot with the comfort of knowing - I fit. The trunk still is a great size for my things although it is a compact vehicle. I have managed to log over 180, 000 miles and the car still drives great. I wish my a/c wasn't giving me trouble or that to undercoating in rusting out the bottom frame. Because those are the only two reasons I am looking for a newer car.
accountCircle Zack S on March 10, 2021

It could use a better shock-absorber system as it tend to transfer every bump the car drives over to the passengers.

This car has low maintenance. Great for driving long distance or around town and fits 5 people comfortably. Is fully loaded and handles the road very well. Only problems I have had is, since this is an older car it makes noise under the hood. Not sure where it is coming from.
accountCircle Tony S on March 2, 2021

My reliable vehicle, a two door Ford Focus.
It has stick shift that is easy to use. It is two doors with a hatchback trunk. Its driving performance is smooth and reliable. It has good fuel economy in the city and highway. It has many hazard lights to inform you if it is running low on something. It can drive 250, 000 miles and many parts replaceable.

Decent starter vehicle not a family car.
This is a decent point A to B car. Not a family car maybe a starter car for a college or high school student. Leg room in back is minimal not for anyone taller than 4 feet. Front seat is not any better. Not much storage space or cup holder space. Factory model does not have anything power on it.

It works well enough. The finish wore off quickly and isn't worth re-doing, but it looks terrible. The cruise control went out but I don't care to fix it. And the A/C required replacing last year for an exorbitant amount of money. I don't particularly like the car, but it gets me from point A to point B.

Ford Focus 2009: a great little car.
I for the most part like my vehicle. I get great gas mileage. However, because it is an older vehicle, it does not have Bluetooth capabilities or a touch screen radio/monitor. I think if it had this then it would be the perfect vehicle for work and play. The only real problem I have is that the bottom of the doors and underneath the vehicle is rusty.

Great on gas mileage and very smooth ride. I have had to replace multiple parts, sway bar, drive shaft, engine mounts, wheel bearings, etc.. All in the past year 2018 so really has held up since I bought it in 2009. Only had to put in regular maintenance.

2009 Ford Focus is great!
I love my Ford Focus! It is 10 years old and still going strong. We have had very minimal issues with it and I still feel confident driving around with my infant son after 10 years. We've never had any serious problems, just basic maintenance issues (battery replacement, squeaky brakes, etc). We have taken many road trips comfortably in this car. The backseat is a little tight on space, but that would be my only complaint. Gas mileage is GREAT! Would highly recommend this vehicle for anyone looking for reliable transportation that will last them many years.

I got my ford focus about 1 year ago, when I first got the vehicle, I noticed that it rides smooth and not to close to the ground and low. I love the fact that I can fill up my tank with only 20 dollars, it is very cheap on gas and takes you where you need to go. I traveled from Valdosta, ga all the way to Saint Petersburg, Florida no problem. I like the USB inputs and I also love the aux core feature, not to mention the a/c and heat works great in this model of car overall it is family friendly and a bet dependable car.

I haven't had any problems with my car, it runs great, and has been running great for the three years I have had it. It's just the right size. Has satellite radio capabilities, two hookups for lighter connection phone charging. The car is not too low or too high, it's easily accessible for my elderly mother to get in and out of. A number of problems, but still strong after 160,000 miles
The car is pretty good, but has had enough problems that I can't call it reliable. After about 100,000 miles, the driver side car door failed, meaning that if you pulled on the handle, it wouldn't unlatch the door and you couldn't open it. The air conditioning has also completely stopped working, and Ford doesn't sell the individual parts for the A/C and heating system, so to fix it I would've had to but a whole new system instead of replacing the compressor. The power steering also completely failed for a time, and turning the steering wheel was extremely difficult. No one has explained to me how that even happened. In an effort to be fair, those are the only major issues I've had with my car, and it's at about 160,000 miles, so maybe it's normal for cars to get like that when they get so old.

It is a very good and reliable car.
I haven't had any problems with the vehicle. It runs great. It is very reliable. Gets me from point A to point B. It is very comfortable and I just love the car. The car came with the normal radio and all that. If need parts very easy to find and easy to fix.
