2010 Ford Focus Review: A Very Reliable Year For The Popular Compact Car

Alex Showalter
Jun 28, 2022

The 2010 Focus can last over 250,000 miles with only some idling and wheel bearing issues. At $4,664 to $6,684, it’s a bargain for a dependable car with this much technology.

The SYNC stereo system works well, handling is good and the suspension is comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is weaker than some rivals, the backseats have limited legroom and the interior materials are cheap.

Is the 2010 Ford Focus a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2010 is a good year for the Focus. Owner reviews like the efficiency, comfortable backseats, and responsive steering.
  • Reliability ratings are above average. Models from 20092011 are good choices, with a lot more issues showing up in 2012.
  • Performance is poor from the single 4-cylinder engine offered.
  • The Focus is a reasonably safe small car, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is good, at up to 28 MPG combined.

2010 Ford Focus: A great, reliable truck.
My Ford Focus is a great vehicle to commute to work and/school, and is also great for storage as it has a durable bed. The gas mileage on the truck is very good, better than competing trucks for sure. It can seat about 6 people and overall, is a comfortable truck to drive in and sit. It's a very well built truck on the exterior as well and I haven't had any problems with the paint job, dents in the bed or any scuffs.

It was smooth ride in the summers weather all different states.
Had few factory recalls, rack pinion lasted 10 years before went out, great performance I bought it off car lot it had no cruise control, but very real able great on gas. I have traveled across state spent less than 1000 on Norway in gas for 30000 miles.

Ford Focus is a reliable and comfortable car.
I bought my car used in 2012 and it has been completely reliable ever since. Rarely have I had any issues. Super comfortable car with leather seats.

Love my car, plan to have it for as long as I can.
Problems: low to ground so difficult to use on dirt roads, had an issue with steering column and where key engages. Tire pressure sensors do not last long. Comfortable car, big enough to carry necessities, tires are cheap to replace, great gas mileage only have to fill up once a month.
accountCircle Taylor B
The back seat is a little small.
I love the size of the vehicle, being a small person i prefer small cars. I also love the Bluetooth capability and the trunk space. I don't really have many complaints, i am pretty happy with my car.

Reliable small car with great gas mileage.
Great small car. Reliable and runs well. Great gas mileage. Low maintenance. Large trunk. Leather interior, heated seats, fog lamps, electric locks and windows, rubber floor mats. Not amazing in the snow. Self dimming rear view mirror. Rear window defroster. Heated side mirrors.
accountCircle Abby B
My car does have some trouble taking left turns, as the suspension on that side makes noises if turning too fast.
My car is pretty small, but is very comfortable to drive. It started out smooth when I got it, but has since become a bit bumpy because the suspension is going out slowly. It is starting to have some trouble getting going, and can take awhile to get up to speed. Overall, it's a very good car for the price, but I am also looking forward to getting a new one in a couple years.
accountCircle Denise L
People should know that my car has great gas mileage.
I love the way it drives. My heated leather seats, my sunroof. The fact that it is paid for. Does not have electric seats.

It has a nice radio that is loud and easy to work.
It makes a kid noise when you drive it and there’s no ac vents in the back so my baby dies of heat. It is a really small car there’s not enough leg room and not enough trunk space. It also does not have enough power. It takes a while to pick up speed after you've come to a complete stop.

Do not buy a ford focus, it a waste of money
I dislike that I had to do Transansmisson already on this car, I do not like the way it works either I did better with the Taurus car I had that was a very good car the ford focus is a piece of junk

Scarey car
I loved mine until my gas stuck on Gandy in Petal. My steering went out of control first .I went a across a bridge fighting for control did not touch gas or brake always told flip if you do that in spin.Car was going side to side on long bridge when came off my car whipped into sign flattened it knocked me to other side of road the impact of hitting dirt stopped car immediately put brake on turned car off . Totaled my car. Side air backs came out . When dealing with Ford they wanted me to pay to have car from state farms I couldn't believe it. If you have ford focus 2010 I'd trade that in soon as possible

Would be good for a young kid learning how to drive, or a good commuter car.
I have owned my vehicle for 6 years, I had to replace the transmission in it 6 months after owning it. With some follow up and review that seems to be a common occurrence with that year of Focus.

2010 Ford Focus: it is just meh.
The Ford Focus is about as basic of a car you can get. It is fairly reliable and gets you from point A to point B, but has an embarrassing lack of performance, features, and comfort. The 2010 model lacks cruise control, a backup camera, no Bluetooth connectivity, or heated/ventilated seats.
accountCircle Selena V
I don't know what this question is really asking.
It acquires so many issues. I have only had the car for two years and the alignment is messed up and I have had thirteen flat tires within the two years I have had it. I be had to fix the breaks and already fixed the alignment once so I don't know why there's another issue with it. It's a really bad car that needs a lot of maintaining
accountCircle Shelby M
Terribly designed inside and out
This car has absolutely no good storage. The trunk is virtually non-existent and the layout of it makes it extremely difficult to get several things both in and out of the trunk easily. The rear seats do fold down to all more length but it isn't very useful in most situations due to the trunk being set low and the opening to the backseat area also coming down low. Making it impossible to slide something in and use the full length the space seems like it provides. The angle at which the item has to bend makes it pretty useless. Also, my car seems to be falling apart. The cover on my mirror popped off pretty easily and the section/panel with the controller for moving my side view mirrors has also popped loose and wont go back on. I've had issues with the struts and mounts multiple times right after one another. The cup holders are also terrible sizes that fit almost nothing these days
accountCircle Mike J
The car is a lemon and shouldn't have been released.
The car is a lemon. Everything on it breaks and they've made several recalls on it. Transmission is horrible, gas mileage could be improved. Windshield wipers fuse went bad. Interior fabric came loose. Overall I would say this car wasn't worth a purchase.

What Do Critics Say About the Focus?

  • Consumer Reports says the Focus has a composed ride, but low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Focus a 4.4/5 liking the infotainment system, but disliking the cheap interior.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Focus 4.6/5 and enjoy the refined handling, but don’t like the small trunk.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Ford Focus Have?

The problems found on the 2010 Ford Focus include rough idling, worn-out wheel bearings, as well as air conditioning issues.

Rough idling is the most common complaint from owners showing up at around 45,000 miles. The source of the problem is usually either a sensor, or a throttle body problem. Sensors cost about $100 to replace, and the throttle body is around $400.

Wheel bearing failures show up in the first 80,000 miles on a lot of Focus models. Replacing the wheel bearing costs about $200 per wheel, but it fixes the problem.

Air conditioning system problems are another issue mentioned by owners at around 60,000 miles. A worn-out evaporator is the most common problem, and costs about $1,300 to replace.

How Long Will the 2010 Ford Focus Last?

A properly maintained 2010 Focus will last around 250,000 miles, which is similar to other compact car rivals like the Honda Civic. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than competitors, according to Repair Pal, at $493 per year.

Most Focus models from 2010 will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace items including the timing belt for $300, fuel injectors costing $200, and the radiator hose which costs $300.

accountCircle Anne D

Yes. It has moved me across country several times. I only have had to do minor repairs and general maintenance on the vehicle.

accountCircle Cindy B

Yes my vehicle is pretty reliable. I have been driving it for 8 years and the maintenance and upkeep is easy to handle. The only problem I had with it was a dealership problem.

accountCircle Lindsey C

Yes it is. I haven't had any problems with mine since I have had it. Been very reliable for me. Great on gas. No electrical or motor issues.

accountCircle Sara L

The 2010 ford focus sel is a very reliable car. It so far has not needed more than normal maintenance.

accountCircle Kelsey M

The 2010 ford focus se is very reliable and has no known problems. Runs well. Alignments are always a1. You could drive hands free basically if it was legal.

accountCircle Brittney R

The car doesn't have any problems right now but all the problems the car did have they were fixed not a very good car to keep around.

accountCircle C F

Shakes and rattles all the time, mechanics tell me that's normal. Sometimes hard to start when you turn the key. Takes a couple tries.

accountCircle Amber T

We have not had any problem with our car. It has 154,000 miles on it. We did have to replace the cluster box and that is it.

How Much Is the 2010 Ford Focus Worth?

Blue book values range from $4,664 to $6,684, making the Focus thousands cheaper than a Toyota Corolla or Mazda3. When new, the price range was $16,290 to $18,780. Depreciation is similar to rivals, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Focus?

There are four models of the Focus offered for 2010. The infotainment system was last updated in 2008, with a full redesign for the 2012 model.

S is the entry-level model and has:

  • 15-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Air Conditioning
  • 4-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX

SE adds more features including:

  • 15-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Power Windows & Locks
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Cruise Control
  • Fog Lamps

SES is a sporty model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Redesigned Front Bumper

SEL is the luxury version and features:

  • 16-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Leather Seating

What Engines Come In the Focus?

The engine found in the 2020 Ford Focus is a weak 2.0L 4-cylinder with 140 horsepower, which gets up to 28 MPG combined. Performance is below average, taking 9.7 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Focus Come In?

How Big Is the Focus?

The 2010 Ford Focus is an average compact car, similar in size to the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. Passenger room is okay for its size, but taller adults will struggle to fit comfortably in the backseats.

Cargo space is good with 13.8 cubic feet of room in the trunk, which is enough space for 3 to 4 suitcases.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Focus Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Fusion is another sedan from Ford, which costs about $2,000 more. There’s more passenger room in the Fusion, but the Focus has better reliability ratings. We recommend going with a Focus since they last longer, and are more affordable to own long-term.

The Mazda3 is another competitor, which costs about $2,000 more. Performance is better in the Mazda3, especially with the upgraded engine, but the technology is more up to date in the Focus. We recommend the Mazda3, but the competition is very close for this year.

Yes. Very reliable I have owned it for 5 years and taken multiple trips across country in it safely. Gas mileage is great both in town and on the highway.

accountCircle Cindy B

No, I keeping have mechanical issues. Wheel barriers have to be replaced, battery is weak. Seat belts are loose.

accountCircle Amber T

It is a great car. Just does not have enough room with teenagers in the back seat, as far a leg room and seating. Whoever is in the front seat has to have their legs in dashboard for passengers to have leg room.

The start is failing for me
I saw another review that said "The starter started giving me problems after 2019. You have to really force the key into the ignition to get the car to start." and that is what i'm experiencing at the moment. I turn the key and I have to push it slowly, fast, soft, hard, and sometimes by the grace of god it starts but it's getting harder and harder to start as the time goes on and as the weather changes. When I try to start it like how you would normally start a car it makes a noise like it's trying to start but can't. It never stalls while I'm driving, thankfully but I can't use the car because I get stuck in places since the start is weird and difficult. If anyone has any solutions please let me know. Mechanics have not been able to start my car and made the bright decision to change my battery which if you have a car you know that’s a lot of money but changing the battery DIDNT EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM. So they were wrong about that and they will keep being wrong until they get it right which is gonna be more money. Other than that the car looks nice but when driving it doesn’t kick up as good as it did when I first got it.

I have to say that My 2010 Focus has been the most reliable car I've ever owned ,I bought it with 44,357 miles on it and it now has 276,397 miles on it , I've only done basic maintenance , changed the front struts with aftermarket same for the rear suspension , replaced the valve cover gasket coils and spark plugs , other that I haven't done anything to it ,I have however replaced the Rocker panels , the originals started to rust due to living in upstate NY and the salt on the roads during the winter months ,I plan on keeping my focus for years to come ,I also own a 2011 Ford focus SeS fully loaded with 110, 212 miles on it and no issues at all with it even though it has several aftermarket modifications done to it , so would I recommend buying a 2008 to 2011 for Focus Absolutely just keep your maintenance up keep it clean (Car washes etc ) and it'll be a great car for you and it'll be super easy to find parts for as well .

Reliable transportation and good gas mileage
I purchased my 2010 Ford Focus SE Coupe (metallic gray) for $16,800 on August 5, 2010 from a Midwest Ford dealership. I still own this car and marvel at the sports car feel and driving, coupled with the good gas mileage and relative low maintenance...car insurance is low also. Presently, the car has just under 64,000 miles and as of this year I get an oil change twice a year. The battery, brakes, tires, starter and a few other things have been replaced at a nominal/affordable charge but over all the only problem is rust as I live in Northern Michigan year round. I plan on keeping it for another five years or so, depending on the rust as the car is not garage kept but rather outside year round.

I love it but hate it. I drive it everyday.
Bought it a few months ago haven’t had to replace much. Needs a new motor mound cuz it rattles and is loud. Back seat is very small no leg room. The ac went out and I just refilled it. Then it worked. Radio speakers are loud my shocks are wearing out. Check engine light is on for the evap system. Tire barings s**k. But other then that it speeds up quickly breaks are good.

I love this car so much. Very reliable, good acceleration, and the car charging port continues to charge your device even when the car is off. I love how small my car is in terms of parking! It has lots of space in the back and the back seats fold down when I need extra trunk space. The starter started giving me problems after 2019. You have to really force the key into the ignition to get the car to start.

I really enjoy driving this car. It is reliable and for it is size it is pretty spacious. We drove it out of town a few times and had no problems. It is on the smaller side of vehicles which is nice driving a lot. It picks up and goes when I need it to and I do not feel like I am putting me or my kids in danger driving it. Smooth car, small backseat.
The car runs smoothly. It is easy to maintain whether you like to do the maintenance yourself or take it to a shop. The parts are not overly priced like some imports or luxury vehicles. The car handles well steering and brake wise. The back seat is a little tight on leg room. Even when front seats are pushed far forward. Even though it is a sedan it is not comfortable for people to be in the back unless they are children. The trunk is very spacious and can fit a lot for road trips.

Compact turning radius master.
My ford focus has cloth seats, changeable foot light colors, a sunroof, and a large trunk (for a small car). I have had no problems with the car since I received it in high school. The thing I rave about with this car is the turning radius - I hardly ever have to make three-point turns. Because of how small the car is, when I park, I rarely park over a line (which also makes parallel parking so much easier!). I guess if I was to have one complaint about my car, I'd say it takes a minute or so to blast cool air (but that might have to do with the fact that I live in Arizona).

Great, reliable car, very comfortable.
I love this car! It is reliable and the perfect size for me. I got it used about a year ago and have not had any problems with it. Radio, air conditioning, and power windows all work great, I never had any issues. Car is very comfortable to ride in.

Fun sized and comfortable.
For looking like a small vehicle it is actually roomy inside. The Bluetooth factory radio is very convenient for hands free radio. It has some pick up and go. So it also embraces the fast side and tend to have at times. Always reliable getting me where I need to be.

It's reliable. I have had it for a long time and it has reached 200,000 miles and still going.
It gets me from point A to B. It's high on gas mileage. Seats are comfy.

It's black, automatic 4 wheel drive.
My vehicle has been wrecked twice. I need another car because it is 10 years old. I do like that it is good on gas. But, I need more space. It's not big enough at all. I would also like a back up camera and a GPS built in my dash. It is reliable though, considering its been hit twice.

Careful in the winter , sometimes slips easy on ice - but the right kind of tires can help with that
So far it has been very reliable, excellent gas mileage - must have good tires on slippery roads though.

Simple and easy driving with ford focus.
I really haven't much to say other than I have found my ford focus to be a very dependable vehicle. It is simple, easy to maintain and I get excellent gas mileage on it. If you are like me and do not need all the 'bells and whistles', a ford focus just might be the car for you! I truly like driving this car and it is very affordable to boot.

Small cars with loads of space.
I bought my 2010 ford focus used and 10 years later it is still up and kicking. There are only two things that I wish were different. It does have problems going up hills sometimes which can be stressful when you are in traffic and you are the one that everyone is trying to pass because you are going 5 under the speed limit and slowly decreasing speed but there's nothing you can do about it. I also do not like that there is not a cruise control. It can make long trips across the state a very uncomfortable experience as a driver. Other than that it works well and it does it is job like it is supposed to. It is efficient on gas, has nice fabric seats, good ac for the summer and good heat for the winter. One great feature that I like about it is that you can access the trunk from the back seat by folding the seat down. This is great for when you are driving and do not want to stop and get out to get something from the trunk. Just have your buddy crawl into the back seat and fold the seats down to reveal the trunk space. When I first bought the car I was very impressed with the trunk because it is very big and can hold a lot of stuff which is not very common for such a small car. Another feature I like is the window lock which allows the driver to prevent passengers from rolling their windows down. If you are a mom with kids this is super important!

It is really tiny. Granted, I am also very tiny so it doesn't bother me in the slightest, but for people over 6' I would be careful.
It is a really fantastic car. I do not ever have to worry about whether it will start up or if it will get me where I want to go. It is a super reliable car.

Reliable car for decent price.
Haven't had any major problems with this vehicle. It has been reliable since 2010 and runs smoothly. It is not very comfortable however. It does have sync, which is a voice automated system. The car is front wheel drive and does slide in the snow quite a bit.

It is good on gas, it rides smoothly and requires very little work.
This car, a Ford Focus, is very easy to maintain, rides well, is good on gas and has very little problems.

Reliable small car with great gas mileage.
Great small car. Reliable and runs well. Great gas mileage. Low maintenance. Large trunk. Leather interior, heated seats, fog lamps, electric locks and windows, rubber floor mats. Not amazing in the snow. Self dimming rear view mirror. Rear window defroster. Heated side mirrors.

Highlights of my sel ford focus.
Ford focus was my first own purchased car. Great on gas. No performance issues if you keep up with oil changes and tire rotations. It is spacious for the driver and passenger driver. The back seats are not spacious unless you are driver is short like me. The 2010 feature had a sunroof and color changing lights on the floor.

Small trunk, otherwise really nice. Lasted a super long time

I love how zippy it is. It fits 4 comfortably and has a nice sized trunk with seats that fold down. It it gets great gas mileage.

Super rusty and some mechanical issues.
It has a ton of rust. Including on the underbody. An unusual amount of rust for a 2010. Also had the engine replaced at 120,000 miles. The power steering leaks as well. The tire pressure sensors need to be replaced so the check light on the dashboard is on all the time. The ignition sticks and it is hard to start. Have to mess with the key to get it in and then push the key in hard to get it to start.

I feel safe when driving it
The car has no problems whatsoever. I feel safe when driving it and the gas mileage is great. The car is a keeper

My car is very sleek, and it is a rare 5 speed, you do not see that much anymore.
The car is very reliable, only issue I have had is a recurring oil leak, but all in all it has been a very good vehicle that I would take anywhere. I trust my entire family in it and I believe I will have it for a very long time. If you are thinking about buying one, highly recommend.

The silver bullet book store.' The car is packed with my books.
My car is a five door focus. It has more than one hundred thirty thousand miles on it. I have driven it cross country a couple of times. It is rather small for me, being very long of leg, but once I get under the steering wheel it is comfortable to drive. It is good on gas mileage.
