2013 Ford Focus Review: A Problem-Ridden Cramped Car To Avoid

Alex Showalter
Jan 22, 2022

The 2013 Ford Focus is a compact car available as both a sedan and hatchback with a price range of $5,161 to $16,637. Poor reliability ratings and high ownership costs make the Focus a car buyers should stay away from.

likeFilled The Good
Interior materials are very nice for the price of the car, the handling in the ST model is better than the competition, and the hatchback has good cargo space.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Long-term reliability is poor, there’s less passenger room than other compact cars, and the infotainment system is clunky and difficult to use.

2013 Ford Focus: Quick Overview

  • New features for the 2013 model year include the introduction of the sport-focused ST hatchback model.
  • Reliability ratings are worse than average, according to J.D. Power, but there are fewer complaints than in the 2012 model.
  • Two engine choices are available including a powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder in the ST.
  • Fuel economy is average, tying for 9th place out of 38 cars with a combined rating of up to 32 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are excellent for a compact car with a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest award of Top Safety Pick+.
  • The 2013 Focus ranks 33rd out of 39 compact cars and is near the bottom of the class based on owner reviews. The Focus does nothing to stand out among the competition and is one buyers should avoid.

It has everything I need.
It is reliable, fits what I need to transport but is small enough to park easily. I like the special mirrors on the sides and the heated seats.

The best qualities of my beautiful vehicle that gets great gas mileage!
The vehicle is just the right size not too large or too small. The seats are very comfortable and reclines. Large trunk for all cargo needs.. The controls are located to where they could be seen easily. Easy to drive and maneuver. The vehicle gets great gas mileage in town and on the road.

Slick hatchback is a peach to drive
My Ford Focus hatchback. Is super clever in getting to park in tight places. It's roomy enough inside to fit 4 people and has great trunk space. It is a flex fuel car and because of this gas is cheapest on the market. But unfortunately the mpgs with ethanol gas is average comparison to other non flex fuel cars

Focus on the ford focus for now.
I love my ford focus because of it is compact size and reliability also it is mpg it is perfect and personalized for me. I cannot see myself without it and I would not trade for anything else. I keep it looking clean and as long as you clean the interior and keep the engine nice and oiled with all it is needs and maintenance it could last you a lifetime guaranteed by me.

Not many repairs needed with great gas mileage and handles easily.
It is a nice looking vehicle and it gets great gas mileage.

Reliable ride with features for the whole family.
I drive a 2013 ford focus. It gets about 23 mpg in town and 35 or so on the highway. I have not done much as far as repairs go. The basics such as tires, battery, and oil changes are the extent of the repairs. The vehicle rides well, has cold air and heat. I love the heated seats too! The car does drive like a ford with some shaking sometimes. It is annoying and you'll swear the transmission is going out. Insurance for this car runs about $50 per month. It has navigation and sirius xm availability. This makes the commute or driving to strange areas manageable. The hatchback is great for hauling groceries, sports equipment, luggage, band instruments and gardening supplies.

I love the compact design, the dark gray color, the bluetooth capabilities, and the gas mileage. I routinely drive 500+ miles every week, and although I have to fill up every week, one tank lasts me a long time. I do not like the limited backseat legroom. Additionally, I would prefer a touch screen in the car
It's attractive and durable, and with the proper maintenance it can last a long time

It is a good reliable car and that is what is most important to me.
It is a great car. It is great on gas and it is fun to drive. Nice compact car.

Been a problem since day 1.I would recommend staying away from the ford focus.
Constant transmission issues. The interior is cheap. Everything is plastic and it breaks. The paint has been coming up (the clear coat) and I make sure to maintain clean/wax my car. Also there are constant manufacturer recalls I get in the mail on this vehicle as well.

The car has been nothing but trouble. I would not recommend this car due to engine difficulties.

Unreliable. There have been multiple issues with the transmission clutch system/wiring harness. There is a class action lawsuit against the company for these issues.

A ford focus se year 2013.
The ford focus is a okay car. It has minor issues that have been fixed but the same problems seems to be recurring such as the wheel bearing or something with the tires. The gas mileage is great, however, I would prefer a different car model for more reliable transportation for long distances.

Will Never Buy Another Ford
Ford currently has a class action lawsuit against it because of this specific car. The transmissions are horrible. Every time I take it into the dealership for an inspection or routine check-up (ex. 60,000), there are updates that need to be done. It drives horribly and jerks when moving from a partial stop to the gas.
accountCircle Sara F
Transitions to a car with a different transmission.
It's not reliable. Since I got it I have had transmission issues but it does not qualify for the recall. It's technically been “fixed” but it still stutters. So it is never going to be reliable or useful. It's horrible in the snow and I can barely get around in the winter. Maybe if it didn't have transmission issues and I lived somewhere it doesn't snow it would be ok.

What Problems Does the 2013 Ford Focus Have?

The 2013 Ford Focus’ problems include 10 recalls, costly transmission problems, and severe steering failure. Transmission problems, including jerks and hesitations with acceleration, are the most frequent issues owners report. Radio problems are also mentioned by owners. The radio will frequently lock up and become unresponsive. Replacing the head unit fixes the problem, but can cost about $400.

Electric power steering failures are very serious, and are commonly brought up by owners. Often the only solution is to replace the power steering module, which costs over $1,500 depending on local labor rates.

There are 10 recalls, which is worse than other cars from 2013. The recalls include the rooftop rack, child locks, side lights, engine wiring, doors opening unexpectedly, the hatchback unlatching, and a stuck canister purge valve. Most serious are  doors opening since they can cause injury to passengers.

How Long Will the 2013 Ford Focus Last?

A properly maintained 2013 Ford Focus should last over 200,000 miles, which is average for a compact car. Regular maintenance costs are significantly more expensive than the competition. Repair Pal estimates them to be $626 per year.

accountCircle Robert S

Only problem was transmission which was covered under warranty. Other than that no problems other than regular maintenance.

accountCircle Bridgett K

The ford focus is very reliable. It does not have any problems currently, and overall, has provided a lovely and stable experience. Compared to the vehicle I was driving before this one, this one is the most reliable.

accountCircle Ashley A

It has been mostly reliable. It has had some issues with a module and transmission, but ford has always been helpful in fixing the issues.

accountCircle Caleb B

It has. Some weird fuel economy issues. There was a recall on some kind of fuel pump and it actually got worse after that. But the vehicle is reliable.

accountCircle Taomea B

Very reliable no problems. The car has new paint. The ac works great. Brand new tires low mileage. The perfect fit for me and my daughter.

accountCircle Elizabeth M

I have had several recalls on ford including: door safety features, transmission issues, and fuel processing. The transmission recall left my car stranded miles from my home not able to accelerate over 15mph. . My cmv has failed on the vehicle but was covered with purchased ford liability. . No other issues besides regular upkeep. Good card if you pay hand and foot for liability.

accountCircle Leila C

This car is very reliable. I have gone on many road trips in it and had no issues. I have only had one issue with the transmission but that was covered on warranty.

accountCircle Paulina J

Someday it is reliable but for the most parts there is a lot of problems. Like hazard lights, tail light keep going out, low beam lights, and transmission too.

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology in the Ford Focus is average for a compact car from 2013, with no major frills.

  • Base technology includes a 4-speaker stereo system with AM/FM/CD and AUX connectivity.
  • Upgrades include Bluetooth, Sync voice control, an 8-inch infotainment system, navigation, and 10-speaker Sony stereo.

What Engine Options are Available?

The 2013 Ford Focus’ two inline-four engine options include turbocharged EcoBoost, but popular compact car has reliability issues. Performance is weak in the entry-level 2013 Focus models, but good in the ST version. With the more powerful engine, the Focus ST goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds.

  • The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 160 horsepower.
  • The engine found in the ST model is a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder which has 252 horsepower.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Focus?

The 2013 Focus is a compact car offered as both a sedan and hatchback and is similar in size to the competition. Passenger room in the backseats is cramped in the sedan, but better in the hatchback. Even with the extra space fitting five adults into either version is difficult. The sedan has 13.2 cubic feet of space in the trunk, and the hatchback has 23.8 cubic feet. There’s more than enough room to fit 3 suitcases in the sedan and 5 in the hatchback.

How Does the 2013 Ford Focus Compare to Other Cars?

Ranking near the bottom of the compact car class, the 2013 Ford Focus comes in 33rd place out of 39 cars, based on owner reviews.

Higher up the list is the more expensive Honda Civic. The Honda has more passenger room, better reliability ratings, and is a more efficient choice. Interior materials are superior in the Focus. Overall, the Civic is a better vehicle, since there are not as many serious issues.

Another competitor which is offered as both a coupe and hatchback is the Mazda3, which has a higher starting price. Reliability, comfort, technology, and passenger room are all better in the Mazda. Handling is a bit sharper in the ST Focus, and is the only place it wins. The Mazda3 is a much better choice, with fewer problems.

First day I owned it I found out the air conditioning doesn't work. Second day I found out the screen and the radio doesn't turn on. I haven't gotten in the car since It only had one other owner. If it wasn't one thing going wrong it was another. First some type of shielding fell off the bottom. Then it was having trouble locking and unlocking, I even had trouble with the fuel sensor, finally the transmission sensor went out and the local ford place didn't have the part and said it was very hard to get. I regret ever being suckered into buying it, and would never have kept it longer than a month if my warranty hadn't covered the costs if all but the last problem.

Compact with plenty of leg room still great on gas and has plenty of cargo space.
I enjoy my vehicle thoroughly! It has not left me stranded in the 3+ years of ownership! It does occasionally have a weird shudder but for a 7 year old car I cannot complain a bit! The fuel economy is amazing and it has a pretty decent amount of get up and go, not a race car by any means but definitely enough to let you pass that pesky tractor trailer!

Ford 2013 runs smoothly for 8 years.
Since I have had my car I haven't had any major problems with it. The only major problem I have had is the brakes wearing down. Otherwise I have only had to get my oil changed and tires rotated. The car runs really well but does make some weird noises when it is cold.

I am really a fan of ford's 'flex fuel'.
I have had no problems with the car, always starts, never leaks, extremely reliable. Regular preventive maintenance ensure that the car always runs and functions at peak quality. There are several recalls on the vehicle, after the recalls were installed in the car I have not seen any problems with the car.

Transmission fail for 2013 ford focus.
The transmission shifts rough a lot. It is because of the design by ford for that year model. It is a very compact car, but still 4 doors. Room in the back is very limited, but does seem like a reliable car otherwise. I like how I can fill up the tank for $20.
accountCircle Carol L on June 18, 2021
Itty bitty living space, but plenty of benefits to make up for it.
The vehicle itself gets great gas mileage and is fun to drive. With it is compact size, it fits just about anywhere and is easy to park and maneuver in tight spaces. However, with the ongoing transmission issues that are manufacturer based, it makes being able to rely on this vehicle difficult. The interior of the vehicle is also rather small, even for a compact car. It does have a lot of trunk space, which is good for traveling and grocery shopping.

My 2013 ford focus nightmare!
I bought my car certified used, with 28,000 miles on it... Loaded with all sorts of 'bells and whistles' on it. However, there have been several recalls on it, which has frustrated me to no end. It's a beautiful blue color with lavender in the paint. I am seriously thinking about trading it in on a different vehicle.

A compact, fun, car with amazing gas mileage!
It has a recalled type transmission, so that needs to get fixed often. The accelerating will be sort of jumpy for a while until it gets fixed. The car is the perfect size for a small family and has amazing gas mileage. It is cute and comfortable. It is equipped with Bluetooth but has a simple control deck without too many bells and whistles.

My vehicle is really nice. It gets amazing gas mileage. They only thing I do not really like is that you have a bigger family the backseat is small it is big enough for small children but 10 and up it might be a little cramped. It is a good car to start off with when it is just you by yourself.

I really enjoy this car. So far there has been no problems and for such an affordable price. I highly suggest this car if you are looking for one. The drive is smooth and it's kind of a small car. Ford focus review. Basic review for 2013 ford focus.
Since purchasing this vehicle I've had to put it in the auto shop at least twice a year. Usually due to a major recall sent out by the manufacturer. The car is pretty good when driving in the rain and snow. I can travel up to 300 hundred mile before I need gas. Driving long distances in the car is pretty comfortable while sitting.

I love my ford escape 2013!
I own a ford focus 2013. I have had it for almost 3 years now. What I love about it is I've always wanted an SUV but they are always too big for me. The ford focus is perfect for me in the sense that it's still an SUV but not too big. Parking is simple, and the adjustments in it are nice for me to be able to see (I am shorter). It has a lever on the left side of the seat that lifts the seat up. The only thing I would say negatively about the car is the back seat isn't very spacious. However it isn't often I have 3 people back there so that's not a problem. Overall I love the vehicle.

I like my vehicle because it is small but not too small, has adequate storage, and is easy to maintain. It is easy to set up Bluetooth and connect music to the car using the USB drive in the center console. It gets good gas mileage as well. I've had 10 recalls on my car so I would never buy a ford again. From door latches to clutch issues which I paid to repair and got a refund when the recall for the clutch came to pass. Was supposed to get the airbags replaced but no other company makes airbags. Dangerous.

2013 ford focus has issues that they will not fix.
My 2013 ford focus has a transmission issue that the company knows about but will do very little to fix the issue. I can have it fixed but ford will only pay for certain parts to fix the shuddering problem. Leaving me to fix a problem that is their known defect. I believe if they know the issues they should fix the problems at no cost to the buyer. This car has been nothing but an embarrassment to drive. I will never buy a ford vehicle again.

Ford focus transmission issues.
The car gets great gas mileage, above 40 mpg on the highway and averages about 35 mpg in city driving. The car itself is very basic. It does not include lane assist, cruise control, or power windows in the back two seats. The car is small with not a lot of room in the back seats and trunk. The worst part of the car has been the transmission issues. The wiring has been messed up several times which has caused a fuse to blow and left me stranded on two separate occasions. The transmission also bucks and kicks when changing from first to second gear, and also from second to third gear. It feels like it will break at any time. I will probably never buy another ford focus after this car.

It hesitates when accelerating. It is a continuous issue and there is no permanent solution to fix it. There have been a couple recalls but other than that it is been reliable. However, the hesitation when hitting the gas feels like a manual car when it shifts gears.

Review of the qualities of my focus.
I have a lot of trouble with the engine. It is also pretty compacted in the back seat which makes it hard to comfortable fit people to sit back there. I like having a sunroof. Although it does not have many compartments in the front to be able to put stuff in. No cup holders in the back is not nice either.

Very nice, high tech,cozy.
I like my vehicle for the most part. One problem I do not love is the fact that it is a 4-cylinder meaning my pick up is quite slow. It is amazing on gas. To fill my tank it only takes about $20. It is quite comfortable and also the interior gives off a newer vibe even though it is a 2013. One problem I have had with it was my all my speedometers stopped working on my screen but it was a super quick and easy fix. All it needed was a quick system reboot. Another thing I have noticed is that it is not great in the snow it is more of a city summer car. Besides all that it is a pretty reliable car, sometimes problematic but I have so far been happy with my buy.

The transmissions are horrible. Gas mileage is great. They are in a mass lawsuit because of the transmissions. I have had 4 new clutch packs. Three new transmission control modules. Now it is out of warranty so if it goes out again I have to pay for it. I have 84000 miles on it.

I really like my little car, it is just the right size for me. One thing I do not like though is the glove compartment does not close if you have stuff in the way. It would be better if there was some kind of barrier to keep stuff out of the way. Other than that it is a very reliable car.

My car is completely unreliable. Transmission, clutch, electrical all have been fixed multiple times with no success. Zero comfort. Feels like you are riding in a go cart. No room for anything. My focus St has been a great car. The performance is more than enough for a daily driver. It is a lot of fun to drive. I have the fully loaded trim and the recaro seats are fun. This is a great car for the person that needs fun and practicality. Also everyone should learn to drive a stick shift.

Cute car with sync Bluetooth.
Overall I enjoy my car. It is still new to me I have only had it for about 4-5 months. I like the Bluetooth features however it gets annoying always having to talk into my steering wheel. Overall I think it gets good mileage and I like how many miles you have until empty is shown on the dash.

Great starter car but not practical for families.
Haven't had many problems yet, however if you live in the snow it does not handle the best. It is great on the gas and gets me to where I need to be. This is a good car for those learning to drive but not so great for those with a family and need to carry things around or fit a lot in it.

Sorry performing Little Ford car.
Not a good buy! Steering column has had to be replaced. The care is falling apart! Currently an issue with the sensors. The problems just continue to show themselves!!!

Love hate relationship with my focus.
There have been several issues with the transmission, but they were covered by ford. For a starter car it works well and I get pretty good gas mileage. It has a lot of features such as Bluetooth and a USB port. Dislike that it is black leather because it is uncomfortable in the summer.

Decent ride, great mileage, both city and Hwy.
I am not too picky so features I get are fine with me. Mileage is great, I love my car for that. Vehicle had two recalls, both were my issues, experienced problems while driving - transmission problem and faulty door lock. Had dealership take care of those free of charge which was nice but still a hassle. Altogether it's a great car for the price, would buy again.

Good but not my favorite car.
It is just a little too small for me personally and does not have the power or acceleration I would like. It does get very good gas mileage and is great for commuting. Does decent on long road trips. Has had a few recalls recently but do not feel unsafe.

Great car for long haul driving.
I love how comfortable my car is during long road trips. This car gets great gas mileage. However, it does have drawbacks. The transmission shifts slowly due to the fact that it is designed for fuel efficiency and not for speed. I do enjoy the large dash and the fact that the options are great for my long drives to work.

I love the bright blue color of my car.
I love my car but it has had some tire issues since my car has been used before. It has very good mileage. It is important to take care of your car by taking it to get cleaned at the car wash inside and out/ or you could just clean it yourself. Whatever works best for the car owner is what is also important.
