2017 Ford Focus Review: Unreliable Compact Car With Transmission & Engine Problems

Alex Showalter
Nov 26, 2022

The 2017 Ford Focus only lasts around 150,000 miles with serious transmission and clutch issues. At $10,375 to $28,300, it’s not worth buying when a lot of the problems cost thousands to fix. The RS model is worth the money, yet it’s rare on the used market.

Handling is very good for a compact car, the hatchback offers good cargo space and the Sync 3 stereo system is easy to use.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Passenger room is limited in the rear seats, there are a lot of expensive problems which show up as it ages, and the latest safety technology found on competitors is missing.

Is the 2017 Ford Focus a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2017 is a bad year for most Focus models except for the RS since there are a lot of transmission problems. Owner reviews complain about high ownership costs, a plastic-heavy interior, as well as sudden breakdowns.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 5/10 – Interior materials are basic across the lineup, the seats are overly firm, cargo space is good in both the trunk and hatchback.
  • Reliability 5/10 – There are a lot of transmission problems found on the base models, making the RS the only good model. Avoid Focus models from 20122017, and go with a 2018 if you want better reliability.
  • Performance 9/10 – The base models offer average performance while the RS model is one of the fastest hatchbacks on the market.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2017 Ford Focus is a safe car, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. Standard safety features include a rearview camera as well as Ford MyKey. Optional upgrades include rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, rear parking sensors, as well as blind spot monitoring.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 35 MPG, giving 486 miles of range from the 13.9 gallon tank. Gas costs are $57 cheaper than average at $154 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – Extensive mechanical problems make the 2017 Ford Focus a bad value since they cost a lot to own long-term.

The quality of the car is reliable. No more breakdowns on the side of the road.
My Ford Focus delivers a reliable way of transportation. It is very dependable. It provides the luxury I need.

The apple car play is very helpful with staying focused on the road.
There is not a lot of space for packing but is really comfortable to drive in for longer distances. I would not recommend driving long distances with a full car though. The apple features I really like and helps me focus on the road. I haven't had a lot if any problems with my car since I got it.

The car is the best on fuel efficiency and looks great
It's a great car the hatch back is really recommended instead of the coupe. White is the sportier looking color to get the car in runs smooth

Great car for a reasonable price.
I love my ford focus. So far it has been very reliable. Gas mileage is better than I expected. Best of all the car has a lot of power for a small car, which really helps when merging in and out of traffic. I chose lightning blue which is one of my favorite colors.

I have owned a focus prior to and upgraded to this one. I love the hatchback. Love the gas mileage. The look and feel of it.

Ford Focus - Focusing on good mileage.
There are no issues with this car. Drives well. Good mileage. Hatchback trunk - with a removable cover. The back seats do not lay down as flat as I would like.

Ford focus is reliable, comfortable and I feel safe driving my car.
Had transmission problem in the first year, but it was repaired under warranty. I really enjoy the back up camera. It handles well. Easy to maneuver. It is pretty good on gas mileage. It has a roomy trunk. Media sync with my phone is a great safety feature.

Great car for everyday driving can also store and often it to take camping.
Very reliable. Good gas mileage. Haven't had any problems with it so far. Drive about 30000 miles a year. Hatchback has a lot of space for storing stuff and the seats also in the bath come down. The rearview camera is also a very nice feature and has come and use a lot of times.

Review vehicle carefully!
Crank windows in back seat, no cruise control. Very basic model. Vehicle has very limited space, I have 3 car seats and only 2 can barely fit comfortably. I would recommend looking into this vehicle completely before one decides to buy it as their family car.

Ford focus 2017- proceed with caution.
It has been in the car shop for multiple repairs. I bought it brand new and I have had a new motor put into it twice. It is obviously an issue with the computer in the car. The car does drive nicely and not all of those cars have the same issues. Ford is an iffy brand for me.

Ford focus does not feel safe.
Transmission issues. I only have 40,000 miles on this vehicle and it gurgles, struggles on inclines, has constant alerts that the transmission is overheating (and I am just in traffic going less than 20 mph). The vehicle engine does not sound good, there are odd ticking noises and engine clattering. The dealership technicians constantly say nothing is wrong..
accountCircle Keysha J
My vehicle it terrible. I hate everything about it.
This card is not reliable. It is got about a million expensive problems and if you buy the car, you end up owing more than the car is worth and it is almost impossible to get rid of. If you are wanting to purchase a car, I would highly recommend steering in a different direction.
accountCircle Mylene F
Too small for family travel.
Too small, it's not suitable for long family trips. We did not realize how little room the vehicle had when we picked it out, not to mention all the mechanical issues. The car is an automatic with a manual transmission, that should say enough. I am not sure what ford was thinking when they designed this car.
accountCircle Lana K
Worst vehicle I have ever purchased.
Worst vehicle I could have ever purchased. The transmission is slipping and has been worked on already, my loan is $10k upside down with nothing to show for it, and it is extremely uncomfortable during long drives. These does not come with any special features except Bluetooth.

Do not purchase ford focuses.
My turbo went out at 29,000 miles, it is also going out again and it is only at 34,000 miles. The transmission also goes a little wild every now and again. Everything continues to go out on the car. Even though I have kept up with oil changes and other maintenance work.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Focus?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Ford Focus has a lot of flaws compared to other compact cars with low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Focus at 2.9/5, praising the comfortable suspension, but doesn’t like the small back seats.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Focus a 3.7/5, praising the fuel-efficient engines, but owners don’t like the basic interior.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Ford Focus Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Ford Focus include the transmission shuddering while changing gears, premature clutch failure, as well as the engine stalling while accelerating. Overall, these problems are more severe than in other compact cars, leading to high repair bills.

The transmission shuddering while changing gears is a common complaint from 2017 Ford Focus owners at around 30,000 miles. Damage to the gears inside the transmission is very common. Owners can rebuild the transmission for around $900, or replace the entire assembly for around $3,000.

Premature clutch failure on manual transmission models has also been reported by owners at around 19,000 miles. The original clutch plates are weaker than many other cars on the market. Many owners choose to put in an aftermarket clutch which lasts longer, for around $1,600, while the original one is about $1,300.

The engine stalling while accelerating also shows up on some 2017 Ford Focus models in the first 35,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a stuck canister purge valve, which will make the engine stall. There is a recall which covers the purge valve, so Ford will replace it for free if it is causing your engine to stall.

There are 5 recalls on the 2017 Ford Focus, which is more than many other compact cars. The most serious recalls cover the canister purge valve as well as a transmission fluid leak. Ford will repair and replace parts on affected models for free. Other recalls cover seat welds, which are only found on about 698 models.

How Long Will the 2017 Ford Focus Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Ford Focus may last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as the top-rated Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than other small cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $553 per year.

As a 2017 Ford Focus reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the exhaust manifold for $850, transmission oil cooler lines for $200, as well as the fuel sending unit, which costs $950.

accountCircle Nate D

It is reliable. 9 haven't had a problem with mine and I hear good things from other owners of the same car I have.

accountCircle Phil H

Yes, the transmission makes noises and the vehicle shudders as I take off from a stop. Apparently many people have this problem as there is a lawsuit underway.

accountCircle Dawson R

Only problem is it spiders when you take off a little bit from a complete stop. Other than that I haven't found any problems.

accountCircle Brit A

It is reliable and I have had no issues with it. I just get regular oil changes. The gauges all work correctly as well.

accountCircle Leah G

Yes it is reliable. No problems with it, except mine had problems with the transmission. Otherwise great car has not broken down or had any serious issues yet.

accountCircle Terry P

It is very reliable. We have had no problems with it at all except for some little bogging off and on at take off.

accountCircle Lauren B

Yes it is very reliable. It has had a few recall issues that I cannot exactly remember but I got them fixed quickly and everything is hunky dory!

accountCircle Abel T

No it doesn't have any problems and yes it is reliable I had no problems so far. The car has never been broken down.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is average in the 2017 Ford Focus offering a standard 4.2-inch touchscreen, with an optional upgrade to an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3.

Safety technology is worse than other compact cars from 2017, only offering a standard rearview camera and Ford MyKey teen driver safety system. Optional upgrades include rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, as well as high-beam assist.

Is the 2017 Ford Focus a Good Value?

No, the 2017 Ford Focus is not a good value since there are a lot of expensive transmission problems. Blue book fair market prices range from $10,375 to $28,300, making it cheaper than a Honda Civic or Mazda3. When new, the price range was $16,775 to $36,120. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What Colors Does the Ford Focus Come In?

Passenger room is good in the front seats, although the rear seats are cramped for taller adults with limited legroom.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford Focus Have?

Cargo space is good in the trunk of the sedan with enough space for 3 to 4 full size suitcases. The hatchback offers more room with enough space for 5-6 suitcases behind the rear seats, and 8-10 with the seats folded flat.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Ford Focus came out in 2012 and was discontinued after 2018 when Ford changed plans to build trucks and SUVs.

2012: Fully redesigned for the third generation with a new exterior, interior, and engines.

2013: Both the SEL model and SE Sport packages discontinued.

2014: No major changes.

2015: More efficient engines offered, minor exterior styling changes, and an upgraded stereo.

2016: Sync 3 stereo system added, new automatic transmission on 1.0L EcoBoost model.

2017: No major changes.

2018: Final model year of the Ford Focus for the US market.

How Does the Ford Focus Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Ford Focus is one of the worst compact cars you can buy since there are a lot of mechanical problems. Stay away from the Focus unless you’re in the market for the more reliable high-performance RS version.

The Honda Accord is a larger sedan which costs around $6,000 more. Passenger room and standard technology are both better in the Honda Accord, while the Ford Focus is easier to park in large cities since it’s smaller. We recommend the Honda Accord since there are fewer complaints from owners.

The Ford Fiesta is another small car offered by Ford which costs $1,000 less. Steering is more responsive in the Ford Fiesta, while the Ford Focus offers more power and better acceleration. We recommend the Ford Fiesta since there are not as many serious mechanical problems reported.

Slow acceleration and small vehicle but everything else is stellar.
The only problem I have is that the acceleration from a full stop is so slow. The gas mileage is amazing. I get about 30 miles to the gallon. It is not pricey. I got mine in 2017 fresh off the lot with 5 miles for I believe $13k because I had a check from my previous car. I love the color. The radio is amazing. The car is a bit smaller so if you are taller I wouldn't recommend.

Has It's hiccups, but gas mileage is wonderful.
Air conditioning problems, the head and feet fan do not work at the same time, it is either one or the other. Sometimes it has trouble turning on. Rattling sound from behind the driver's seatbelt. Trouble accelerating after a stop, or feeling the whole vehicle vibrate while changing speeds. When it does not have these mechanical problems it does run very smooth. It does great on gas and that is the main reason I purchased this vehicle.

Focus review - standard transmission.
I like my car; would have preferred a different color, but the features suit my needs. It gets very good gas mileage, despite the fact that I drive mostly local. The only issue I have had is that the oil change indicator did not function the first time I needed to change my oil.
accountCircle Annah R on June 25, 2021
Compact! This vehicle is small, but somehow still has so much interior room.
Sometimes the engine will “chug” when I accelerate too quickly after slowing down. Usually right around the time for an oil change- coincidence or not l, I have never had an issue with this vehicle. Some snowy days can be tricky for traction but I have also never needed to be towed or pulled out of a ditch. Space is great! Fitting a rear facing car seat in the back seat is tight but it fits. The truck space is also good size.
accountCircle Olive M on June 20, 2021
My ford focus is the perfect car for me.
I love that my car is really reliable, has not had any issues since I have bought it and it is really easy to drive. Plus, the leather seats keep it smelling like a new car every time I get in it. It is a black car so one annoyance is that you can always see the dirt but that is really the only issue. It makes me feel at home.
accountCircle Kayla W on June 17, 2021
It's a nice ride, a few problems.
The only issue is car seats don't work properly in this vehicle. Other than that the dust catcher falls off easily. It's a smooth ride, I wish it had seat warmers. It's got a neat little card holder. This vehicle is not meant for dirt road areas. Other than the issues listed, it's a really nice ride. (I upgraded from a falling apart mini cooper.).

The truck will close on its own, just wave your foot under the back bumper!
The car has been great! Everything still runs great, it is a daily driver car and it holds everything you need it to with plenty of room. Easy to maintenance as well. The hatchback is convenient, the drink holders are big, the led lighting in the car is so cool. I would absolutely recommend this car.
accountCircle Lyndee G on June 10, 2021
Small compact bug with no get up and go.
There has been an oil leak since day one. There is no room. The interior is cheaply made. The door jams are tearing apart. It does not drive well in rain or wind. The alignment is easily knocked out. The seats are not holding up. The tire sensor light stays on.
accountCircle Josh H on June 9, 2021
The best detail is the dash interface. Saved my butt many times.
The car always turns over when you put the key in. A/c and heat work great. All I have had to do is regular upkeep like oil changes and tires here and there. The lighting for the dash and center console are very well done. The blue accent looks great. Interface shows you everything from mpg to mph, indicates tire pressure, little things like brake lights. Highly recommend.

4 door, tan leather seats, heated seats and steering wheel, automatic sunroof.
My vehicle came with a sunroof and heated seats. It also has a heated steering wheel which I love. It has touchy pedals but I have gotten used to that. My seats are tan leather and I love it. Good space and I enjoy the apple carplay and touch screen display it has.

The pros and cons of a 2017 ford focus.
The 2017 ford focus has a lot of great features including: a big trunk, spacious backseat, and sound system that tells what song you are listening to. The drawbacks are the car roof is low in comparison to the driver's seat. This means when you wear a ponytail or high bun (which I often do) you will hit the top of your ponytail. I have hit my head while going over a speed bump. Other than this the car is a great basic car, and great on gas.
accountCircle Sid U on May 28, 2021
What’s it is like to drive the smooth ford focus.
I really love how smooth and quiet the ford focus drives. I can barely tell it is pushing the speed limit and seems as it is barley facing the engine. It also was a cheap and affordable car if u are not looking to pay ton of money for a newer vehicle. Finally I love the small tight fit feeling I have when maneuvering tight turns and parks.
accountCircle Micheala A on May 27, 2021
Racing into the future with the 2017 ford focus.
I love my ford focus, it handles good on the road, it is safe, cheap on gas, has Bluetooth, and goes very fast. I do encounter problems with it though like the Bluetooth glitches a lot and has connection issues, the transmission has a delay when I kick it in gear to go fast, and if you are taking a long trip, you will have to keep stopping for gas. If you have kids, I do not recommended this car because it is pretty tiny.
accountCircle Anessa H on May 26, 2021
Good car, hardly any downfalls.
Backup cam isn't too large and the stock radio is nice. I do wish the seats were darker so they don't stain as easily. There are plentiful cup holders, and good air con. The lights are bright, at night it make it easy to see any possible hazards in the road. The only downfall I see if that there is no way to turn off the headlights, so at a firework show sitting in the car we had to turn off the car and sit in the heat.

It has wheels and moves. Slowly. But move all the same.
My vehicle does not take pot holes or bumps in the road well. It is blue which make it easy to find in a parking lot. My favorite thing about my car is it gets me where I need to go. Often times, driving back and forth between school and home, I enjoy listening to music using the speakers. They provide good quality sound.

The increase in technology in cars is the best feature I love in my car.
My car has very comfortable seats. The ford focus drives smooth. I like the extra features. However, the battery tends to go bad quickly. Great vehicle for a young adult that is on-the-go.
The 2017 ford focus sel is a great car for the young adult that is always on the go. It is incredibly fuel efficient and will cut your fuel expenses significantly every month. The sel trim comes with an amplified sound system that takes care of the job if you do not wish to do your own aftermarket shopping. The sunroof is a lot of fun and one of my favorite features.

It can reach up to 60 mph in 5 seconds.
The gas runs out quite quickly, but the car runs smoothly especially over messed up streets. Seats and comfortable and overall interior is nice looking. The wheel is getting looser, but breaks are still intact. Speakers are great. Oil changes get pricey at times. Air capacity in tires remained consistent since I first got the car.

Ford focus is a good vehicle for city living.
Good gas mileage. Transmission is a little janky. Size is on the smaller side but the trunk has lots of room. Steering is great because of its size, handles great too. Compact size helps living in a big city. Haven't had any major mechanical issues in almost 2 years of having it.

Had a lot problems with the vehicle-the axis is misaligned, currently have a slow oil leak, it is a good car though-I drive it back and forth between New Jersey and Pennsylvania; leased it at first and own it now; seats are comfortable and my dog seatbelt fits in it nicely.

A bad taste in your mouth: ford focus and the transmission!
The 2017 ford focus has ongoing transmission issues. I have had the tranny repaired 3 times already. It will begin with shuddering when you take off from a stop. As the war heats up the shuddering will worsen. Eventually you won't be able to get it in gear at all. The 2012-2016 had a class action lawsuit against ford for the transmission.. Seems like ford didn't do much to better the 2017.
accountCircle Dane P on April 24, 2021
Bought the focus St brand new then modified with a less restrictive exhaust.
Air vents do not point down far enough. Radio does not go loud enough. Depreciates too quickly. Lug pattern is the worst pattern to have. Cabin seems loud, should have more sound deadening. Had too many recalls for simple things. Torque steer in okay but could be improved upon.

Ford is a great car choice.
It has great gas mileage and drives so smoothly! I do not like the fact that it has started to shake in the last year when I get to a certain mph, we took it in and they said it is normal. The car takes e85 which is also awesome since it is the cheapest.

Ride suspension, exhaust damping is easily adjusted with the click of a button.
Comfort of the 2017 focus rs is sub par of that with the cheaper trims, including the oversized plastic dashboards with all plastic door trim. The seats are comfortable but not for larger people. The recaros do their job and hugging your body, but could be slightly wider.

Like father, like son: a ford for generations.
I have had my 2017 ford focus se for a little over a year now. Right out of the lot, I loved the look of the dash and central media hub. Everything was clear and easy to learn after just a few days of driving. Fuel efficiency is a priority for me, and over the last year I am confident the focus’s 37 mpg has saved me some money. One of my favorite features is the sound system and the easy-to-use Bluetooth selection within the media hub. I can seamlessly skip through my music and podcasts while on longer road trips or daily commutes to work. After a year, I have put a little over 10,000 miles on it and have kept it clean and running smooth as butter. My father has owned an older model focus for 10 years now, and says how much he loves my 2017 model almost every time we're in the car. The look of my car is clean and simple. It is an automatic, and shifts through my gears as it accelerates with no hesitation. I am not a fast driver, but I have the power I need of an emergency arose.

I have enjoyed having this car for a few months now. It is a very reliable car with great gas mileage. I have friends that have had a ford focus last them for many years. It is the perfect size for me; not too small, but still easy to whip around. I would purchase it again as of now.

Pure beauty of a car. Love this thing.
I love it never has failed me. A little tough to drive in the snow as it is only a front wheel drive car. It is very reliable has 50k miles on it and not a single thing wrong with it yet. I would recommend this car for anyone who is looking for a reliable car that gets good gas mileage and looks good in the process.

Car satisfaction and review for others to see.
It is ok, has good gas mileage but I am more of a truck, SUV guy good til I can get on, very comfortable, reliable in every way. Comfortable for the size I wasn't expecting that. Features are basic but good I would recommend to friends and family and would definitely buy again.

A review of a car by someone who knows little about cars.
I have enjoyed this vehicle. I have had to fix a couple recalls. The recalls were not super significant. I plan to have this car for a long time. I do not have any complaints about this car. I enjoy that it is four door, there is plenty of room in the trunk. I like the back up camera, I like the radio and the speakers.

2017 ford focus- super safe car.
I personally love my car- it is extremely safe and reliable and a major step up from the older focus models. I get great gas mileage as of now- only $20-$25 to fill up my car. I like that it has Bluetooth connections, and safety notifications. I have the hatchback model and the trunk has tons of space. I am super glad I bought this car!

Great on gas with room for the whole family
My focus gets great gas mileage!!with its fuel saving transmission it automatically puts your car in the proper gear to use the most sufficient amount of fuel. It has plenty of room to seat 5 comfortably..large trunk space for groceries or luggage. And very affordable it's a GREAT car the price anybody looking for a new car I would recommend them to at least consider a Ford Focus

My ford focus and the reason I like it.
I enjoy driving my 2017 ford focus sedan. I have a white exterior and all black interior and love the way it looks. I find it easy to drive and user friendly for all its features and enjoy the backup camera and Bluetooth features the most. I like that the oil used is synthetic so there is longer in between oil changes, but wish it didn't cost more.

It is awesome. I love it.
It is a good dependable car. It runs fairly good and has pretty good gas mileage also. It is also a pretty fast car as well and it goes pretty fast when you try to race it. I also really love the built in touch screen radio and heated seats. It is awesome.

The vehicle is very comfortable.
So far I have had no problems with changing the oil in my vehicle. It seems to me that a constant revision should be made to avoid. The vehicle seems very comfortable to me. I would really recommend the make and model. In general the vehicle is very good.

The ford focus hatchback is a great vehicle to own.
This is a great car for someone like me who drives a lot and likes a reliable car. It has great gas mileage, is good in the winter, and I love the heated seat and steering wheel features. Also, the hatchback feature is very nice and convenient for traveling and grocery shopping. It can comfortably seat four to five people.

It is a good value for the money.
I like the size of the vehicle and the gas mileage. I am very satisfied with the amount of get up and go it has for a smaller engine. I am not as satisfied with how small the opening is of the trunk. It is hard to fit a box in the trunk.

Gas mileage is good and it rides very smoothly and is worth the value
Like the looks wish the side mirror folded in by themselves

My car has a sunroof and heated and cooling seats which is my favorite part!!
I have not had any problems with my car at all. I have had it for 4 years now and it still runs like it is brand new. Great gas mileage and the perfect car to have to get around town easily!! I love it and if I was ever on the market for a new car I would definitely consider another one of these!

A lot of recalls but it gets great gas mileage.
There have been several recalls and that is an inconvenience. I do not like how the backseat windows are manual and the front are automatic. There have been multiple recalls for the transmission. I have safety concerns. It is great on gas though. I wish it wasn't so basic.

Lord of room & super reliable.
My car has been very reliable, I travel a lot and have had no problems. It is a large car with lots of room, way roomier than any other car I have ever driven. It is comfortable and the seats have several adjustment settings to increase comfort. It has a back up camera which is a necessity now a days.

2017 focus St basic overview.
Good vehicles with comfy seats that fit small and larger people. Abs kicks on under hard braking which is annoying. Car drives great in traffic and features like Bluetooth make communication easy. Rear camera quality is amazing and the transmission shifts are precise.

My ford focus is the best car every I am so in love.
I do not have any car problems it is comfortable and my style. Car note is a little expensive but I still love it so much. It is better than any car I have had so far. It drives really nice and look beautiful at night time. I use it as my everyday car, I drive it everywhere and it managers to stay clean, it is read. Would look great with tints.

Love my Ford Focus Very nice car
Had to go in for recall fixes. Other than that works great. Perfect car. I have the hatchback version, and it allows me to do a lot of hauling of stuff to the local dump, grocery shopping. It has four doors and is comfortable one for adults are in the car for a ride

Great car if you are always on the move!
I have had the car since it has had 7 miles on it, and it now has 95k. The car gets fantastic gas mileage and I am able to fit an ample amount of items in it while traveling. I have had 0 issues mechanically at this time. The only complaint is from my boyfriend who is 6’0, who feels slightly cramped when he drives.

2017 ford focus: a better generation.
The car is pretty good. It gets good gas mileage, and handles well. There is a small issue with the transmission that has been found in the previous years of the focus. This 2017 is not near as bad as the 2015 and 2016 but every now and then will shake when moving forward from a dead stop. Does not happen all the time but occasionally.
