2012 Ford Fusion Review: An Obsolete Car With Steering Problems

Alex Showalter
Jan 11, 2022

The 2012 Ford Fusion is a midsize sedan with a price range of $8,235 to $13,643. Even though the Fusion is more affordable than some rivals, frequent mechanical problems and outdated technology are reasons buyers should look elsewhere.

likeFilled The Good
Interior materials are better than a lot of the other budget-friendly midsize cars, the suspension is smooth on rough roads, and there’s more cargo space than rivals.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Expensive steering problems are still common, the visibility is not as good as a lot of the other midsize cars, and the interior controls are tricky to use with a cluttered dash.

2012 Ford Fusion: Quick Overview

  • New features for 2012 include suspension changes, as well as Cinnamon and Red Candy Tinted Clearcoat Metallic paint choices. There’s a full redesign for the 2013 model year.
  • Reliability ratings are average according to J.D. Power, with fewer complaints than the 2011 model.
  • Three engine choices are available, including an efficient four-cylinder and a powerful V6.
  • Fuel economy is excellent and is in 2nd place out of 15 midsize cars with a combined rating of up to 26 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are good, with four out of five stars in government crash tests and a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  • The 2012 Ford Fusion ranks 11th out of 15 midsize cars, based on owner reviews. The 2012 model is outdated, has mechanical problems, and is a car we don’t recommend.

Ability to set limits on certain car features.
The only problems I have had with my ford fusion so far is that I have an oil leak that I have not been able to get fixed yet. I do wish that it was better upgraded, aka having a touch screen to control the radio, air and heat, temperature, fan control, etc. But part of that is probably due to the year of my model which is 2012. Overall though, it has been a very reliable and sturdy car and I have used it quite a bit since I purchased it back in 2016. It was used when I acquired it. One of my previous jobs involved spending half of the day in my car driving to my client's house which covered three different counties. So it has quite a few miles on it but other than the oil leak, I haven't had any major issues with the vehicle and I am overall satisfied with it. It is also a good first car for a teenager because you can program the key to the car to place limits. For example, since I bought the car used, the main key that came with it (I had another key made) actually had limits placed on the settings in the car. As long as I was using that specific key, the car would not go over 80 miles an hour no matter how hard you push on the pedal and the volume also had a cap setting on it to where you could only have the volume up so loud. So that was a pretty cool feature that I'd never seen before.

It's a great value for money, great ford product
I like the size, large enough for my family but small enough to maneuver easily. It is great on gas mileage. It rides smooth, a great daily driver.

Buy something with more room and more power as you will regret this later on.
It has no power. And. It breaks down often. And I feel like. Always taking it in for recalls. I hate the color, the monthly payment is too high and insurance is a killer.

Ford fusion -2012 dealing with multiple recalls.
Unfortunately, as I do love the size and comfortably of my car, I have ran into many issues with it. There have been multiple recalls for this vehicle that are hard to deal with as ford has many to deal with other constantly and has no system of prioritization.

Constant repairs
2012 Fusion SEL AWD, bought used and in the first year owned had to replace starter,(warranty), driveshaft, (800+$), coils, ecm, catalytic converter, and now transmission is shifting hard, sluggishly, and no power, with a leak detected. Possible 2k$ for repair. This car has less than 75k miles on it. This experience has so soured me, I do not plan on buying any car ever again.
accountCircle Jodi P
Most uncomfortable- gutless wonder.
It a powerless engine, the seats are very uncomfortable. The headrest are awful feel like they are pushing on your head in a downward motion unless you have the seat tilted back so far. There is no leg room in the front seats. And the back seats are the most uncomfortable to sit on the middle seat is raised so it's hard to sit 3 people in the back.

Sapphire blue with black interior.
Check engine light comes on after hooking up to a computer that says nothing is wrong. Multiple recalls all inside door handles are broken. Truck hatch does not work half of the time. Car will not unlock on the door nor let chain most of the time. Even with new tires they keep going flat.
accountCircle Laura H
Overall my vehicle is a great sedan with a sunroof and leather interior.
Weird things have gone wrong with it. Cosmetically it is awful but it has continued to run! It burns oil like crazy at this point. I do love my heated seats but they are not air conditioned so they get hot in the summer, my windows are not very tinted at all.
accountCircle Jess M
My vehicle is a 2012 ford fusion. The color of this ford fusion is maroon/red.
My car is a ford fusion. This is the second one I have had and I will never get another one. It does not feel safe. It struggles not to slide in rain or snow, and sometimes, even when it is dry. It shakes and makes weird noises. The bottom fell out. I also do not feel like I could safely make it anywhere long distance without having severe issues and/or feeling terrified the entire trip that something would happen to my car.

What Problems Does the 2012 Ford Fusion Have?

The 2012 Ford Fusion problems cover power steering failures and faulty airbag inflators, among other major issues. The 2012 Fusion has more problems than other midsize cars on the market, and most of them are serious mechanical issues. Even with all the problems, there’s fewer complaints than the newer 2013 model.

Power steering problems, including power steering assistance failures, are the most common issues. The electronic steering system is a weak spot on the Fusion, with components wearing out around 65,000 miles. There is a recall on the steering system, but owners have had the parts fail several times. Replacing the parts costs about $1,500, depending on local labor rates.

Door handle failures are a very frequent problem as well. The interior door handle linkage breaks where it attaches to the latch cable. A replacement handle costs about $150.

Transmission problems including rough shifts are also common. Usually, the transmission begins to jerk and shift poorly when fluid levels are low. If you notice transmission problems check the fluid levels and add as needed.

There are six recalls, worse than other midsize cars from the same era. The recalls include a loss of electrical power steering assistance and the airbags. Most serious are electrical power steering assistance failures, since the problems can lead to accidents.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2012 Ford Fusion is more affordable than other midsize cars on the market with a price range of $8,235 to $13,643, depending on the mileage and model. When new, the price range was $20,705 to $29,175. Depreciation is average, losing about 45% of the original value in the first five years.

  • S is the entry-level model and has 16-inch alloy wheels, cloth seating, blind spot mirrors, keyless entry, and a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system with 3.5mm AUX jack.
  • SE is next in the lineup with 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, a power driver’s seat, and a six-speaker stereo system.
  • SEL focuses on luxury with improved 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a Sync infotainment system.
  • Sport is a performance-oriented model with a larger V6 engine, 18-inch wheels, sport suspension, spoiler, black exterior trim, and improved steering.

How Long Will the 2012 Ford Fusion Last?

A properly cared for 2012 Ford Fusion will last about 200,000 miles, which is standard for a midsize car. Expensive power steering problems happen about every 65,000 miles. Regular annual maintenance costs are average for the class. Repair Pal estimates the costs to be $583 per year.

accountCircle Nancy R

It is mostly reliable. The only problem is related to the transmission. I am in fear that it is a problem that will be too expensive to fix.

accountCircle Martha W

The 2012 ford fusion se is a reliable vehicle when it comes to the engine. On the other hand after a certain time you will have to replace inside door handles. The car itself has a lot of body defects that are not covered on a recall even though ford is well aware of the issues.

accountCircle Brittany P

Yes it is very reliable and I have experienced no problems with it since I have bought it and I would buy one again for sure.

accountCircle Maria S

My car is very reliable. It starts even on the coldest morning. I have had minimal work done on it, except for the occasional maintenance.

accountCircle Lora R

Mine has been very reliable. There's been no major problems since I have had it. We've had to do some minor repairs from hail damage and normal wear and tear.

accountCircle Cora J

I had the car passed down to me so there were already issues with the car from the previous owner. It still gets me where I need to go and I am fixing the issues one by one.

accountCircle Brittany V

Right now it is reliable. I have a feeling in the near future it will require major maintenance as it feels like the power steering is about to go out and it has starter problems it takes about 10 sec for it to actually start.

accountCircle Jamie B

As far as I know, there are no problems with the Ford Fusion. I have only provided the usual maintenance on my vehicle, such as oil changes, new tires and a new battery.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Technology is basic in the Ford Fusion, with the entry-level models missing a lot of features found in other midsize cars.

  • Base technology includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with four speakers and an AUX connection.
  • Upgrades include a Sync infotainment system, navigation, voice control, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity, as well as six-speaker or 12-speaker stereo systems.
  • Standard safety features include Ford MyKey, which allows parents to set limits, antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, as well as airbags. Optional upgrades include parking sensors, a rearview camera, and blind-spot monitoring.

VehicleHistory Image

What Engine Options are Available?

Performance is good for a midsize car in the 2012 Fusion, and is quick with the upgraded engine. The larger V6 in the Sport model takes the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.7 seconds.

  • The base engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder with 175 horsepower.
  • An optional V6 on the SE and SEL models is the 3.0L V6 which has 240 horsepower
  • The engine found in the Sport model is the 3.5L V6 which produces 263 horsepower.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Fusion?

The 2012 Ford Fusion is a bit bigger than other midsize sedans on the market. Passenger room is good with plenty of room for adults in the front and back seats. Cargo space is one of the largest found in a midsize sedan at 16.5 cu. ft. of room in the trunk. There’s enough room to fit four to five suitcases.

How Does the 2012 Ford Fusion Compare to Other Cars?

Ranking 11th out of 15 midsize cars based on owner reviews, the 2012 Ford Fusion is near the bottom of the class.

A highly-rated competitor is the more expensive Toyota Camry. The Camry has better reliability ratings, and a lower cost of ownership. Where the Ford stands out is with more cargo space, and a higher-quality interior. The Camry will be less of a headache to own than a Fusion, and earns our recommendation.

Another close competitor is the more affordable Chevrolet Malibu. The Malibu has more room for passengers, and is more engaging to drive. Where the Fusion stands out is with better technology, and more luxurious trims throughout the cabin. Overall, though, both choices are not good sedans, and buyers should go with something more reliable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Ford Fusion a Good Car?

No, the 2012 Ford Fusion is not a good car based on information from 1,089 verified owner reviews, and 16 government and automotive websites. The upsides include a more luxurious interior than the rivals, and decent fuel economy with the four-cylinder. Downsides are mechanical problems, and performance is weak in the entry-level models. Buyers in the market for a midsize car should look elsewhere since there are more reliable options from Toyota and Honda.

It's good car
It has issues like any other car, but still it's strong, spacious, reliable car. It never leave you in roads, if you care properly. Common complaints include, inner handles (i changed all the four), drive shafts (i changed both), arms (i changed all), driver seat is unscientific for S model (i had to re do seat, head rest etc to cure sciatica it caused). My car is now 287,000 KMs and drive smoothly, Alhamdulillah

Rats like the spark plug wires.
The car is fine but the wiring material for the spark plugs is rat food. Twice I've had to buy little overpriced connectors and reconnect the broken wires. I just repaired it and now engine coolant temp gauge doesn't work. They probably ate that as well.

This vehicle has had normal wear and tear at 130,000 miles. Repairs have been pretty typical for the miles. Not as up to date with technology at this point but the vehicle is 8 years old. I use the car for work purposes and have not have any unpredictable issues.

Ford fusion, great and reliable car.
There are few to no problems with my car. It is very reliable. The front seats are very comfortable, with adjustable seating arrangements, and also seat warmers. The car also includes lighting that goes throughout the car, that you can set to a color of your choosing.

Love my ford fusion it's the only vehicles outside of a truck that I will drive.
I love the fusion, this is my second one, I prefer the style of the newer ones. It handles very smoothly, and the hybrids are phenomenal on gas. The one I have now is a 2012, my previous one was a 2014 hybrid, it was such a smooth ride. Both vehicles handled winding roads very well especially when going fast(my husband likes to go fast). I always recommend the fusion to anyone looking for another vehicle.

I love the overall performance of the car. I also love how it only take me 30 to fill up my tank. All of my other cars were older card this is my first car that is above the year 200 and even though it is only 2012, it still runs great. I love the stereo system, and the rear parking sensor. The car is very comfortable and has nice features. It is a 2012 so they are a bit outdated but the cost more than makes up for it. The car easily seats 5 people and has ample trunk space. I also had two car seats for children installed with no problem.

2012 ford fusion ups and downs about.
The car has a lot of recalls. The power steering assist always fails every now and again. There is a major airbag recall. The car other than the performance grade gets great gas mileage and does not really have much issues. This would make a great first car for somebody if they are looking for something simple.

I find that the handling/steering is incredible. The turns it makes are great. The interior is sleek and wonderful. The audio capabilities (Bluetooth/line-in) are a great touch. I really like the great gas mileage I get from the ford fusion.
My ford fusion air conditioning is not reliable. Sometimes I have to turn on my fog lights to make the air conditioning work. My car also makes a lot of noise while driving, mostly from the tires. I may also have a lot of vibration if I have my music too loud. The car is pretty easy to drive, and has a great gas mileage (I actually get about 27 mpg). I am not a fan of the 4 cylinder, and if I could go back in time, I would get a v6. I enjoy being able to use Bluetooth audio in my car, and the sound system is really nice. If I have my music too loud, the entire car will vibrate or make buzzing noises.

It is not very comfortable driving on not so north roads, the key fob is a master key so if you lose the master key and do not have another programmed key you will not be able to drive vehicle. On my specific vehicle I had a power steering decal on it and got it fixed but the power steering has still gone out close to 4 times since it was fixed.

I like my 2012 ford fusion.
My car has the basic standard features, all the power options, am/FM stereo with Bluetooth. It has a very efficient 4 cylinder engine that can get over thirty miles to the gallon on the highway. It has been a very reliable vehicle only needing routine maintenance. I would definitely recommend the fusion to new buyer.

Great amount of room and minor problems.
I got this car used with very little miles and it ran great a year after having the car is when I ran into a few small problems. Last winter my serpentine belt came off and it happened again a month ago. The power steering got fixed about 2 years ago. I overall really like this vehicle. Its roomy and has plenty of room in the back for my child as well.

Ford fusion has great handling and heating.
The vehicle runs nicely and I would say that the best feature is the handling. The acceleration is slow but I have not had any problems with it breaking down. The interior is not especially modern, but the heating is great. My vehicle has over 100,000 miles and still runs very well.

The 2012 ford fusion and it is awesomeness!
I really like my car. It is comfortable and fun to drive. I like how smooth it drives. Everything in it works really well. It is a very reliable vehicle and definitely gets you where you need to go. It is performance is good and it can really get up and go! I really like how I can connect my phone through Bluetooth. This allows me to listen to the music I want to listen to. The Bluetooth feature also allows me to accept and make calls without even touching my phone! I love that a lot because it makes it like the person on the phone is in the seat next to you.

Fashionable and functional.
Fantastic on fuel. Fashionable and functional. I love this car cause it rides like a luxury car! Leather interior with heated seats makes me feel fabulous. This car is almost ten years old and still makes me feel like a movie star! It's very stealthy too, the hybrid makes it very quiet!

Hands down top in my top 5 of car for young or drivers with little knowledge.
The car is a great starter car for newer drivers, and maintenance is cheap, and parts have been cheap and easy to locate if need be. Little wear and tear I have had this car for almost four years and just minor issues great on gas, now have had to put money onto the a/c but overall wor tdr h the money'.

Daily driver very reliable.
Power steering rack and pinions are know to go quickly and transmissions! But all in all is a great vehicle if you just need something to get you back and forth. It is pretty quiet and drives smooth! Body style is pretty modern and sleek! Also has a sunroof which I love.

Drive till wheels fall off.
Issues with electric system after 100k miles. Great road car heat works like it is brand new and almost 10 years old. Bose stereo system keeps tunes on point. Spacious and great trunk space. Fuel inlet becomes issue after 125k miles. Good gas mileage in larger cities. Very safe car. Keep brakes done and you are good to go till the wheels fall off.

Ford fusion sel 2012 lux sedan.
It has a great ride quiet and smooth along with great acceleration and handling. I would say its a sporty with some high end options. It has heated adjustable leather seats with some fun lighting on the inside. It has lots of legroom for all with the back seats that fold down for extra trunk room. It has a very nice sound system as well you can sync your phone for hand free operation.

Leather interior, heated seats, power seats, power windows, sunroof.
Several bugs with the back up sensors. Otherwise a great car, good mileage and few problems in the last 6 years. I have not had any bad experience with the internal mechanics of the car. Only two defective batteries. This is a great car for a new driver or for someone looking for a basic car to get back and forth. The sound system is also great.

Perks to purchasing a ford fusion.
I have owned this vehicle for 6 years and am still in love with it. It is extremely dependable. I have over 133,000 miles on my car and have only had basic upkeep repairs. I have used this vehicle for road trips across the country and the comfort level is second to none.

Ford fusion is a great vehicle and i'd recommend it to anyone.
Have had no major issues with it since it was purchased new. Came with all the options I needed with the sel trim. Backup camera is great. Better than most other car brands that I have seen. Blind spot monitoring system is also great to have. I am a bigger guy and have plenty of room in the vehicle. It also has a large trunk which helps with having to carry a lot of stuff.

Review of 2012 ford fusion.
The drive is nice, however there is a hard shift from first to second where it lurches forward. That is probably because of the engine and transmission combination. I am a fan of the color and the Bluetooth sync availability. I also like the blind spot mirrors, they help out a lot.
