The 2017 Genesis G80 lacks the brand recognition and cachet of rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. As a status symbol, the Genesis still has catching up to do with those entrenched European competitors.
For 2017, the vehicle formerly known as the Hyundai Genesis becomes the G80. Along with the all-new G90 flagship, it is launching the Genesis luxury brand, similar to what Toyota and Honda did in the 1980s with the Lexus and Acura divisions.
The Genesis G80's leather-lined, 5-passenger interior is among the roomiest in its class, making it a pleasurable place for all occupants. In addition to its sheer space, we appreciate the Genesis' layout. Though it offers all the trappings of a luxury car -- climate-controlled seats, power-rear window shade, and center-mounted touch-screen display that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphones -- controls are remarkably easy to use. The G80 also offers buttons and knobs that are a snap to use. The front seats get our kudos for their overall comfort, and the driving position offers a good view out.
As with its interior, the G80's body lines are clean and elegant. Up front, the new Genesis G80 sports an imposing hexagonal grille. From there, this luxury sedan has long, attractive lines that convey a sense of quality and refinement. The trunk line finishes in an aerodynamic sloping design reminiscent of an Audi A7 fastback. Genesis G80 models with the 5.0-liter V8 can be distinguished from the rear via their quad exhaust outlets. And, of course, all models wear the new Genesis winged badge on the rear of the automatically opening trunk.
Not that long ago many would have smirked at the notion of a luxury Hyundai. But the automaker has been steadily upping its game ever since the introduction of the first Genesis sedan nearly a decade ago. With the 2017 G80, the automaker has a vehicle that can truly compete among high-end luxury sedans. With a ride more oriented toward comfort than performance -- think Lexus GS vs. BMW 5 Series -- the G80 is an excellent highway companion. But with its rear-drive layout and potent V6 or V8 engines, it never feels lacking in power. A Sport mode and paddle shifters are standard and offer drivers more engagement, but we admit to most often leaving the Genesis in Standard mode and letting it do its thing. A Snow mode is also on the drive-select roster, and all-wheel drive is available in V6 versions, appealing for those living in cold-weather states.
The new 2017 Genesis G80 has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $42,350. That's $2,650 more than its former self, the Hyundai Genesis, but the new G80 includes more safety features and, ostensibly, more cachet now that it's wrapped into a luxury brand. The HTRAC AWD system, available only on V6 models, is an additional $2,500. All in, a V8-powered G80 Ultimate checks out with a $55,500 price tag. The G80's starting price is thousands less than those of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Lexus GS, Cadillac CTS and all-new Volvo S90. Under the new brand, the G80's resale value is still something of a question mark, but as the Hyundai Genesis, its numbers trailed those of the Lexus GS and Audi A6.
The 2017 Genesis G80 comes in three main trims: Standard, Premium and Ultimate. In base Standard form, it certainly isn't lacking for features. You'll get all the active safety and driving features described in "Favorite Things," plus leather interior, power-operated and heated front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, HomeLink garage-door opener, rearview camera and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Infotainment includes navigation system with 8-inch touch-screen display and 7-speaker AM/FM/CD/HD Radio with Bluetooth connectivity and USB and auxiliary ports. All Genesis G80s include a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, three years/36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, valet and concierge services, and roadside assistance.
Stepping up to the Premium variant adds an excellent 14-speaker Lexicon audio system, panoramic sunroof, 7-inch color display in the instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, power rear sunshade, and front and rear parking sensors. All-wheel drive (AWD) can be had in lieu of the standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) with V6 versions of the G80, and that option also adds heated rear seats/steering wheel/headlight washers. The Ultimate package features higher-grade leather, a 17-speaker Lexicon system, wood and aluminum interior trim, 9.2-inch touch-screen display, power-operated trunk, and head-up display. To get a V8 G80, you'll have to opt for the Ultimate package.
ACTIVE SAFETY FEATURES
With this model's metamorphosis from Hyundai Genesis to Genesis G80 come standard advanced safety and driving systems that were formerly optional. Included are automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist.
IN-CABIN CO2 SENSOR
CO2 in great quantities can be dangerous, causing slowed reaction times and drowsiness. The 2017 Genesis G80 offers the industry’s first CO2 detector, bringing fresh air into the cabin when it detects elevated CO2 levels.
Under the Hood
Two engine choices are available in the 2017 G80, a standard V6 or optional V8. Both use direct-injection technology with a strong focus on drivability, low-end torque and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. Off-the-line response is impressive with both engines, and fuel economy is decent, more so with the smaller V6. Both engines are backed by a smooth and refined 8-speed automatic transmission. As is fitting a luxury sedan, the G80 is rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available for those seeking the most traction, but only on V6 models. Both engines are happy drinking regular unleaded, though Hyundai says the V8 makes the most power using premium grade.
