2017 GMC Acadia Review: Comfortable Midsize SUV With Some Transmission Problems

Alex Showalter
Nov 15, 2022

The 2017 GMC Acadia lasts around 200,000 miles with some serious transmission and electrical issues. At $17,225 to $25,650, it’s cheaper than some other midsize SUVs, but not worth it for a mediocre choice which is expensive to own.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The suspension is smooth on rough roads, there’s not much road noise in the cabin and the stereo system is advanced.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The towing capacity is much lower than other midsize SUVs, ownership costs are high and you can only get safety technology on the most expensive models.

Is the 201& GMC Acadia a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2017 is a bad year for the Acadia since it suffers from mechanical problems, giving it a low overall rating. Owner reviews complain about poor build quality, mechanical issues, as well as some technology problems.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are worse than other GMC vehicles, the seats are basic yet comfortable, cargo space is also lower than the competition.

  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is poor from the 4-cylinder while the upgraded V6 is quick for a midsize SUV.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2017 Acadia is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rear view camera. Optional upgrades include pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic braking, as well as lane keep assistance.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 23 MPG, giving 420 miles of range from the 18.3 gallon tank. Gas costs are $20 cheaper than average, at $231 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The 2017 Acadia loses value faster than other midsize SUVs with some expensive problems, making it a bad value.

Acadia is the perfect family car.
I love my GMC Acadia. It has all the room needed to accommodate two children, visiting grandparents, and plenty of cargo. With the back seats down I can fit in two small bikes, a double stroller, and a cargo box with all the essentials. It drives wonderfully, with tons of pickup. Apple CarPlay was a must, which this car has. The double panel sunroof makes the car feel huge. Power seats in the front are very convenient.

My Acadia handles well. We love going on trips in our new car
Only thing I don't like is seat memory. It seems to have a lot blind spots. Overall I love it.

Lots of upgraded convenience features!
I love all the upgraded features. Heated seats, air control for the rear seats, USB charging ports for the second and third row. I also love that it has third row seating. It has good acceleration for an SUV. We haven't had any problems with the vehicle.

2017 GMC Acadia Denali is a superb vehicle.
I love my car. The seats fold up and it makes extremely easy to get the kids, the dogs, the cousins and the friends in and out of the car without having to get everyone out of the car for one person to get in and out. The trim and the design of the inside of the car is beautiful and very easy to keep clean. The seats have an ac option as well as a heated seat option. Both work very well. I live in Florida and the ac option in the front seats is absolutely amazing.

A luxurious vehicle that is very accommodating to any lifestyle or family size.
I love my Acadia. It is the Denali trim so it has all the bells and whistles you can expect from a luxury vehicle. With heated/cooled leather seats, a sunroof and.Moonroof, top of the line speaker system, touch screen, climate control for front and rear, and plenty of room to accommodate any kind of lifestyle you have. For a larger SUV it is also pretty reasonable on gas mileage.

The family vehicle I have been searching for!
I love my GMC Acadia! The features like backup camera and Bluetooth are so efficient and easy to operate! There are also alarms for crossing the median or getting too close to the car in front of you and these add an extra safety feature for me while driving. It works great for transporting my family, and when we are traveling with a lot of stuff, the back seat folds down and gives so much additional room! This car will be in our family for years to come!
accountCircle Dennis S
The car has a passenger capacity of eight. That is important when transporting people.
I like the handling, and the various options, especially the rear view camera. The navigation system is very helpful and I use it a lot.

The car is very cheaply made and the warranty is not very good
Car was made very cheap 3 recalls already and had to get the ac fixed two times

Would not recommend this vehicle with the start stop feature.
The 2017 GMC Acadia is a good car but has one feature I cannot stand. The engine shuts off every single time the car is stopped. Every red light, stop sign, drive thru etc. Anytime there is stop and go traffic if shuts off. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was subtle but it's very noticeable and quite annoying. Other than that the car is ok. Lots of room and rides fairly well on the highway. City travel is a nightmare in this car however.
accountCircle Karra L
Poorly made, runs terrible, and would never recommend a GM product.
We have had problems with it from the day we bought it, 2 months in the fuel pump had to be replaced, and it was in service for a month. The car still doesn't ride right, and fails to start at times. It has auto stop feature that you cannot disable, and it is horrible in traffic situations.
accountCircle Ranie H
The shut off is absolutely terrible. I cannot stand coming to a stop sign.
It shuts off every time you stop. I do not like the way when you get to certain rpm it makes it feel like it is stalling. The hatch back leaks every time it rains or every time you wash the vehicle. Also the gray cloth shows every single little stain you get on it. So many blind spots as well in the vehicle.
accountCircle Shaun G
It is a style I do not see often. Pretty exterior.
Ut is a user vehicle with a damaged looking interior and the engine, air conditioner, and battery are messed up as well.

Quality issues
I've been leasing Acadia's since 2009 and decided to give the 2017 new body style a try. As of 4/2019 currently have 17,000 miles and the tires are smaller and almost bald, after conservative driving habits and regular rotations. The filtration system is horrible, and experience exhaust smell within cabin on the daily. And I must mention the seat-belt chime volume is extremely loud and beyond annoying!! I will not purchase another Acadia when this lease expires.

The all wheel drive doesn't work well. Tires will squeak when making a simple turn. Tires that same with vehicle originally didn't last either ! Smaller than my last gmc too.
accountCircle Angela H
Do not buy this vehicle, it's awful.
Within first year.. Drive shaft needs to be replaced and fuel injectors also. I like the size of the vehicle however I do not like it being unreliable. I love the captain seats and large trunk size when seats are folded. Dealerships have been less than helpful when the truck has needed repairs. Nothing but a nightmare with this truck.

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Acadia?

  • Consumer Reports says the redesigned Acadia has shrunk in size, making it less practical, with low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Acadia at 3.5/5, praising the smooth suspension, but doesn’t like the basic interior.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Acadia a 4.2/5 enjoying the updated safety technology, but owners don’t like the relatively small cabin.

What Common Problems Does the 201& GMC Acadia Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 GMC Acadia include transmission problems, failure to start, as well as excessive vibrations from the engine. Overall, these problems are worse than other midsize SUVs, leading to high repair costs as the Acadia ages.

Transmission problems are the most widespread complaint from owners at around 35,000 miles. There is a “shift to park” error which shows up and can indicate several problems with the transmission. The problems can be as simple as a software issue which costs $100 to fix, wiring harness problems which are $700 to change, all the way up to total transmission failures which cost over $3,000.

Failure to start due to electrical issues have been reported by owners at around 30,000 miles. Alternator failures are common at this point, which lead to the battery not being charged. Changing out the alternator costs around $650, depending on local labor rates.

Excessive engine vibrations are also found on some Acadia models at around 20,000 miles. There is a technical service bulletin to update the engine software which makes the engine run smoother. Other owners have also found broken motor mounts which cost about $350 to replace.

There are 3 recalls on the 2017 Acadia which are all more severe than other midsize SUVs. They cover the front brake calipers which can leak fluid, broken driveshafts, as well as a fuel pump weld that may fail. All of these are mechanically serious and can lead to accidents or cause a fire. GMC will replace and repair parts for free on affected models.

How Long Will the 201& GMC Acadia Last?

A well-maintained 2017 GMC Acadia may last around 200,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are much more expensive than the competition, according to data from Repair Pal, at $650 per year.

As the GMC Acadia reaches 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the A/C condenser for $650, window regulator motor costing $400, as well as the engine oil cooler which costs $350.

accountCircle Connie M

Yes it's been very reliable for us. The only problem I can think of is the terrible noise and wind drag when the windows are down.

accountCircle Renae C

We have not experienced any problems with our Acadia. We do travel every couple of months & it has always been very reliable.

accountCircle Heather B

My only problem has been with the sound going out in the car. It was fixed though for free while it was still under warranty.

accountCircle Caleigh O

We haven't had any issues even purchasing our vehicle used. We have traveled in heavy rain and ice without problems and feel safe with our daughter in the back.

accountCircle Jennifer C

My Acadia has had no problems. It is a very reliable ride. I get reasonably good gas mileage for such a large vehicle and it is super in snow!

accountCircle Jennifer C

Entirely too much computer controlled operation. So many operations were faster & more efficient as a manual operation.

accountCircle Ashley M

I haven't had any problems. It is very reliable and runs well on long or short trips with good gas mileage

accountCircle La F

I don't really think that the 2017 GMC Acadia has any problems I think it's a really good car for me. Of course

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2017 Acadia compared to other midsize SUVs with a standard 7-Inch touchscreen stereo with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety technology is good as well with a standard rear view camera. Optional safety features include forward collision alert, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, as well as lane keep assistance.

Is the 201& GMC Acadia a Good Value?

No, the 2017 GMC Acadia is a bad value since there are some expensive mechanical problems. Blue book prices range from $17,225 to $25,650, making it cheaper than a Honda Piot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $29,070 to $47,070. Depreciation is much worse than other midsize SUVs, losing around 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the GMC Acadia?

There are four models of the GMC Acadia offered in 2017, from the base SL to the more luxurious Denali. It’s also offered with either front wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

  • An available upgrade on the SLT & higher models is a stronger 3.6L V6 which produces 310 horsepower while getting up to 20 MPG. It also comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is good, taking only 6.3 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH. It can also tow up to 4,000 pounds, which is lower than average.

What Colors Does the GMC Acadia Come In?

How Comfortable Is the GMC Acadia?

The 2017 GMC Acadia is a very comfortable midsize SUV with seating for up to seven people depending on the configuration. The seats are nice, offering a good amount of cushioning for longer trips.

Passenger room is good in the front and rear seats, while the optional third row seats are best suited to younger children.

How Much Storage Space Does the GMC Acadia Have?

Cargo space is smaller than other midsize SUVs with enough space for 2-3 suitcases behind the third row, 8-10 behind the second row, and around 15 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the GMC Acadia was introduced in 2007, and replaced by the second generation in 2017.

2015: No major changes.

2016: Standard 4G LTE WiFi hotspot capabilities added.

2017: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new interior, exterior, technology, and engines.

2018: All-terrain package can now be had with a third row of seating.

2019: No major changes.

2020: Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine added, 9-speed transmission, upgraded navigation system.

2021: Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, Elevation Edition added with black exterior trim.

How Does the GMC Acadia Compare to the Competition?

The GMC Acadia is one of the worst SUVs offered in 2017 since there are some fairly expensive mechanical problems.

The Ford Explorer is another midsize SUV which costs around $500 more. Passenger and cargo room are both much better in the Ford Explorer, while the GMC Acadia is quicker with the V6 engine. We recommend the Ford Explorer since there are fewer mechanical issues reported by owners.

The Chevy Traverse is a competitor from Chevy, which costs $2,000 less. Both the GMC Acadia and Chevy Traverse are built on the same platform with a nicer interior and more technology found in the GMC Acadia. We recommend avoiding both SUVs for 2017 since they have the same mechanical problems.

Electronic park brake immobilizes vehicle
Without warning or error messages the electronic park brake got stuck on and locked up the vehicle. It could not be towed by conventional tow truck and required a flatbed. Numerous attempts to unstick the brake (being advised on phone by gmc dealership) resulted in a dead battery. Once the battery was successfully recharged it was still finicky to start and when it finally would start, the vehicle would still not move. Very expensive, time consuming, and worrisome as apparently a simple electric problem rendered the vehicle unmovable. Very unsafe and simply ridiculous.

I love my new Acadia Denali. There is plenty of space for my 1 year old and everything that we need. I love the heated seats and steering wheel. I upgraded from a corolla and cannot see myself driving a sedan ever again. Sound system is phenomenal and the car is easy to handle.

My love for GMC Acadia and all of the features that comes along with it.
It is a pretty durable car and is very roomy inside for an SUV. It has a push key and Bluetooth stereo. I like the Acadia so far compared to some of the other SUVs I looked at. It has a sunroof and is fully loaded. I have had one issue with starting it because it was stuck in park after my battery went dead. After having it jumped I was able to get it out of park and drive again.

This is the perfect family vehicle. There are features that feel “top of the line” while not having to pay the price for those premiums: heated seats, heated steering wheel, rear view camera that turns with you, side mirrors that fold in at the push of a button, and a lot more. It is easy to fold down the front seats to reach the back, or to fold down the back seats for a larger trunk space. Lots of cargo room with plenty of safety and space!

This is a great car for car seats and kids.
I love this car. The bucket seats in the second row are amazing for two kids in car seats. The third row option is also great but even better that when not needed we can fold the seats down for more space. The drive of the vehicle and the gas mileage are also great for a midsize SUV.

Re consider if you have a lot of kids who are still in car seats.
The GMC Acadia has been reliable. We have not had any issues with it and have used it for just about everything. It has a sleek look and is very good on gas. The seat in the middle row folds to make the back row accessible. The issue currently is that we have three kids in car seats, which take up a lot of space, making this car a little too small for a family of five!

2017 AWD GMC Acadia- perfect for on the go families.
Perfect family SUV. Love the 3rd row seating. Spacious. Interior is easy to clean. Smooth and comfortable ride. Plenty of storage space. Good on gas mileage. Equipped with android auto which is a huge convenience. Easy to switch between AWD and other gears. Safety features allow for peace of mind.

2017 GMC Acadia slt 1, my love ?.
I love this car! I enjoy driving it and like the Bose speakers, the big screen, GPS, OnStar, and so much more! Perfect for our family of 5! I did not like the tires that came with it though. They wore prematurely and that was a huge hassle and inconvenience. The dealership explained there was a 'bad batch' of tires installed on many Acadia...I have had heavier tires put on and I am very satisfied now.

2017 GMC Acadia slt review.
The vehicle has worked great and there have been no issues aside from my phone struggling to connect to the entertainment center. I didn't rate the vehicle a five because I dislike how there is not an option to have a bench seat in the very back. Instead it is two captain chairs leaving you with 6 seats opposed to 7. The type with the bench seat is in the center opposed to the back which is an inconvenience to have to move it to get people into the back.

Great vehicle with plenty of room
Great vehicle with excellent flexibility in configuration. Comfortably seats six but leaves little room for cargo.

Great family car with lots of space.
Great space with the third row, back row can be pushed down for extra trunk space. Great gas mileage and features. Love the backup cam, Sirius XM and the heaters in the back. There is a spot for the phones to charge in the back. Luxurious and very well priced for what it has to offer versus other vehicles.

The Acadia GMC drives very smoothly keeping my children napping in the car.
I enjoy driving my Acadia GMC. It is great driving my children and others around in the third. Row. The heated leather seats and dual temperature are great. The only issue I have is the blind spot by the a-pillar.

The 2017 gmc acadia has a lot of blind spots.
I love the size of my car. I love the way it handles. I love the way it looks. I dislike the blind spots.

It looks good and is functional.
Like the style and function. Wish it got even better gas mileage. Wish it has more cargo room.

Great 3 row SUV in theory.
It is a beautiful vehicle with lots of great interior features and safety technology. I love how it drives like a car but still has a 3rd row. However, this car has given me many problems that nobody from gm can seem to figure out. The battery is always drained and the check engine light comes on way too much. Also had a shift to park issue. We are consulting with lawyers since they won't take the car back but can't fix the problem.

Lots of upgraded convenience features!
I love all the upgraded features. Heated seats, air control for the rear seats, USB charging ports for the second and third row. I also love that it has third row seating. It has good acceleration for an SUV. We haven't had any problems with the vehicle.

The Acadia is right for you.
The Acadia is a great vehicle. GMC offers luxury at an affordable price. My Acadia is sporty. It fits my needs well. It is large enough to fit my whole family, including two car seats and still has room for luggage. I recommend GMC. I enjoy my GMC Acadia very much. I will always buy GMC.

Do not let a disability hold you back. Load your mobility items and hit the road.
I love my Acadia! It is roomy even for my six foot son. I am handicapped and carry my mobility scooter and wheeled walker everywhere I go. My Acadia carriers all this and still has room. I have had no complaints with my Acadia in the two years I have owned it. I do the regular oil changes when my display says it is time. I definitely recommend Acadia to anyone purchasing an SUV. I trust GMC.
