2019 GMC Acadia Review: Reasonably Dependable Midsize SUV With High Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 20, 2023

The 2019 GMC Acadia lasts around 250,000 miles with some electronic steering system and transmission controller issues. At $20,625 to $30,450, it’s a decent value for a midsize SUV with some upscale features, although you trade in some reliability for the nice cabin.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The suspension is very comfortable at highway speeds, the cabin is very quiet and the second row has great space.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s less fuel efficient than other SUVs, cargo space is a bit lower than the competition and the third row has limited legroom.

Is the 2019 GMC Acadia a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2019 is a good year for the GMC Acadia since it’s more reliable than older models, giving it a decent overall score. Owner reviews praise the smooth suspension, passenger room, along with the nice stereo system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are fairly nice for an SUV, the seats are comfortable on longer trips, although cargo space is a bit lower than average.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no major mechanical problems on the 2019 GMC Acadia. Buyers should avoid models from 20172018 since there are transmission issues, while 20192022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is very good from the optional V6 engine, although the base 4-cylinder is lacking compared to other midsize SUVs.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2019 GMC Acadia is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, as well as adaptive cruise control.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 23 MPG, giving 420 miles of range from the 18.3 gallon tank. Gas costs $24 cheaper than average at $184 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – Depreciation is quicker than many other midsize SUVs, giving the 2019 GMC Acadia a lower value score.

Easy to drive, alarms when you don't have seat belts, camera in back to reverse.
When driving its a smooth ride, on bumpy roads. It has Bluetooth connection, it had Wi-Fi and smx radio. The seats are easy to move, camera in the back to see how you reverse. Able to fit 6 people in the car. It alerts you if you don't have seat belts on.

2019 GMC Acadia car review.
The Acadia rides really smooth. My family travels a lot by car and it is an excellent car for traveling. My option has captain seats so everyone riding is comfortable as well. There is a lot of trunk space. A sunroof and a moonroof. My husband loves traveling in this car because he says it rides like a truck on the road. Great car.

Space and safety
I would recommend this vehicle to everyone looking for a 3rd row seating suv!!! With the winter weather upon us, I took for a nice country road drive today and it handles like dry pavement!!! The extra seats are amazing for my family-my children feel like they have their own real space, the sound system is amazing, let the all wheel drive in my dual community just adds to the extra safety feeling when I’m behind the wheel. I’m in love!!

Love my GMC Acadia Denali ! :)
Awesome vehicle, drives smoothly, great on gas, 4 comfortable captain chairs, love the in dash navigation, Bose speakers with apple play option, heated and cooled seats. Love the GMC app that tells you all your vehicles info and love remote start especially in cold winter days . 2 things I would change in this car is it only seats 6 people and back window does not open you have to open door to put something in back which is kind of a hassle if it's only something small
accountCircle Kristen B
American made luxury. Worth a look.
Extreme comfortable, quiet to drive, high end touches that rival luxury vehicles. Air conditioned seats in summertime are great. Three rows helpful for transporting visiting family or friends of children. Only complaint is that I wish the gas tank were bigger.

Excellent size and comfort.
Plenty of room for everyone, rides smooth, lots of plugins for accessories, two downfalls I have are not enough cubbies and the cup holders are too small for my water bottle. Considering the size of the vehicle the gas mileage is not too bad and the no gas lid thing is very cool.

Its has a bigger screen than most cars
My vehicle has no problems it is the best car I ever seen it runs great and it's good with gas if you are looking for a car this a great car for you. It's cheaper than you think it has plenty of space if your a big family and drunk has a lot of space so it's really good for shopping it's almost like a moving van, haha! But it's not that big.

GMC Acadia: Perfect for families and full of technology
There is a third row seating with the second row being captains chairs. This is perfect for families with young children because it allows access to the back row without having to take out child car seats first to fold down the second row. I have the leather upholstery which is soft but durable. I love the in dash touch screen with satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot, rear backup camera, GPS, and all the other technology options. The ride of the vehicle is so smooth and it's fast for an SUV.

Scariest experience of my life
So I got my brand new Arcadia GMC SUV not even a month ago ! I haven’t even made my first car payment. It’s brand new not even 700 miles yet. I’m getting in the highway as I yield on I notice the car isn’t picking up. My foot it literally pushed down now on the gas and it won’t catch. I release and slowly get on. As I push on the gas to go it like jittered back then caught and went speed on like 75 miles per hour. I hit the brake so I’m slowing down but I notice the second I take my foot of the brake the car is still at full speed The f*****g petal is stuck ! I push down twice and it kicks back. I’m freaking the hell out ! Icontinues drive very scared and cautious and at steady pace as I don’t want to push on the gas. I’m freaking out. I have to go up a step hill to my destination. So I push on the gas , boom happen again! Petal caught but kick backed out itself after slowing down and forced to break. I’m really scared not too sure what to do they are telling me car needs to be updatEd. It’s like a computer it needs update! WTH !

Engine stalls
I loved my Acadia Denali 2019 for the first 2000 km. Then the engine stalled while in motion. It was fixed, then stalled again within 30 minutes of use. It was «fixed » again. Then after two days the engine warning light was on again. I do not recommend this car.

SHIFT TO PARK ISSUE
Just bought my 2019 Acadia 2 weeks ago and I too am having the SHIFT TO PARK issue. Started a week after I purchased the vehicle. Lawsuit for 2017-2018 models going on in TN for the same issues on the Acadia. Obviously GMC cant seem to fix the issue. Very disappointed !!

Steering
My Acadia 2019 straight from the factory after being inspected and through twwo dealership had Steering issues. The sterring would not return to straight after turning a street corner,if left alone it would continue to keep turning.. GM after chasing them repalced the whole front steering system on a car that had less than 500km on it. Beware of a hard turning steering on a Acadia 2019

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Acadia?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 GMC Acadia is a pleasant midsize SUV with enough room for a family, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Acadia at 3.4/5, praising the smooth suspension, but doesn’t like the limited room in the third row.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Acadia a 4.2/5, enjoying the safety and entertainment technology, but owners don’t like the relatively low gas mileage.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 GMC Acadia Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 GMC Acadia include electronic steering assist issues, failing to shift to park, as well as the A/C not working. Overall, these problems are slightly worse than other SUVs, leading to some higher repair bills as the Acadia ages.

Electronic steering assist issues are a problem mentioned by some 2019 Acadia owners at roughly 55,000 miles. There’s a warning light on the dash which will turn on letting you know the system has an issue. Usually, the problem is simply caused by a loose or corroded battery cable. Changing out the cable costs around $150. If there are other steering issues, they can range in price from $200 to over $1,000, depending on the source.

The transmission failing to shift to park is another complaint from owners at around 40,000 miles. There is a small switch which controls the parking system on the SUV, and if it fails it will not go into park properly. Replacing the switch is fairly straightforward, costing around $200.

The A/C system not working also shows up on some 2019 Acadia models at around 30,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a damaged A/C compressor. Replacing the compressor is a fairly labor-intensive process, costing nearly $1,000, depending on local labor rates.

There are 2 recalls on the 2019 GMC Acadia, which is similar to other SUVs from the same year. The first recall covers missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator, which GM will replace for free. The second recall is on the tires which may lose air due to a break in the sidewall. GMC will install new tires on affected models for free as well.

How Long Will the 2019 GMC Acadia Last?

A well-maintained 2019 GMC Acadia can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $570 per year.

As a used 2019 GMC Acadia reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the ABS control module for $1,100, air bag clock spring costing $375, as well as the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor which costs $250.

Safety technology is very good, offering a standard rearview camera, traction control, as well as GM’s teen driver mode, which allows you to set speed and volume limits.

Optional advanced safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane change assist, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, side blind zone alert, following distance indicator, front and rear parking sensors, rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, surround-view parking camera, as well as a safety alert seat.

Is the 2019 GMC Acadia a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 GMC Acadia is a decent value since it’s reliable and has a nice interior for the money. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $20,625 to $30,450, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Subaru Outback. Depreciation is a bit worse than other midsize SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

  • An available upgrade is the stronger 3.6L V6 which produces 310 horsepower while getting up to 21 MPG. It also features a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is decent for an SUV, taking only 6.5 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

2015: No major changes.

2016: Standard 4G LTE WiFi hotspot capabilities added.

2017: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new exterior, interior, technology, and engines.

2018: All-terrain package now available with third row of seating.

How Does the GMC Acadia Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 GMC Acadia is a decent midsize SUV, although owners should be prepared for some higher ownership costs as they age compared to some of the other options on the market.

The Chevrolet Traverse is a slightly larger SUV available in the same price range. Passenger room is better in the Chevrolet Traverse, while the GMC Acadia offers a more upscale interior. We recommend the GMC Acadia since you get more luxury for your money, while both have similar mechanical issues.

The Ford Explorer is another competitor, which is about $1,500 more. There’s more room in the third row of the Ford Explorer, while the GMC Acadia comes with more standard technology. We recommend the Ford Explorer since they have fewer problems, although both are decent choices for the 2019 model year.

Never again!
I have a 2019 GMC Acadia Denali, purchased in 2021 with very low miles. I’m not sure how the dealership did it but, no warning lights came on for 2-3 days then BOOM….Shift to Park first, spent $1000 replacing Shift Mechanism, then BOOM….Service Driver Assist System….GMC dealership said cost would be $1500 to replace electronic chip! And for the last 18 months the battery dies if I don’t drive at least every 2 days. Took to dealership….spent $1000 to replace wiring that was aiding in draining the battery, that was 4 months ago! My battery is dead today, been sitting over the weekend. I’ve had nothing but trouble with this stupid piece of c**p! It’s a shame you can’t Sue a manufacturer for unreliable vehicles!!! I’m all in $39,000+ now and what am I supposed to do?!

Massive trunk! Stores lots of things, especially baby items!
It is big and the truck stores a lot of stuff. The radio and navigation system are easy to use. It is very safe to drive in the snow and it provides lots of room for my son’s car seat and toys. I love that it has a feature where it locks the car by itself when you walk away from it. That helps me because I do not have to worry about making sure to always lock the car!

GMC Acadia. It is stylish and comfortable. Many options come standard.
The Acadia is stylish and comfortable. It rides smoothly. It has a great information screen. Many things are controlled right in the steering wheel. It has three rows of seats. The first two are very roomy. However, the last row is a little tight. If all three rows are up, there is not much room left in the back for stuff.

My 2019 GMC Acadia has 30,000 miles on it and it keeps saying "shift to park" while it is in park with a loud beeping noise and the car will not completely shut off. I read where it's a common problem. Disappointed with GMC! These cars cost to much for all these issues! ?

2019 Acadia has gotten smaller.
I really like this car. It has almost everything I wanted. I wish it had cooled seats and memory buttons for the driver seat. I also wish it had the lane adjust feature as well as 360 cameras. Unfortunately I had to add running boards and a trailer hitch as this car is smaller than the 2011 Acadia I had previously, the interior is a little small. It would be nice if the 2nd row seats recline more for long road trips since my kids like to sleep when we travel and being able to recline would make them more comfortable. The car also needs more storage space.

Cruise control and cabin noise.
Cruise control is inconsistent, going up a hill I lose at least five per hour speed. If I am driving 70 mph going uphill, my speed drops to at least 65 mph, sometimes less. The cabin is not as quiet as I expected or would like. However, it drives well.

It's a great vehicle. Great design
The vehicle is great, but GMC dealerships are another topic. After the sale, they don't care. We never received our second key and we got none of our loan paperwork. The GMC support line was also no help, we pretty much were dumped after we bought the car. And they told us it was brand new, but on their website we can see that it was leased for a few weeks before we got it.

Headlights are not great
Love my Acadia. Only problem I have had so far is that the gas gage stuck. I had no Idea how much fuel I had. Warranty fixed it. My biggest complaint is that the brights are not much brighter than the dims. When highway driving at night, this really limits visibility.

100% recommended for 4+ family members.
No problems at all, space is pretty good. 3 rows are excellent but you will have less space in your trunk, is a mid-size SUV that can seat up to seven. It runs on a standard 193-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission. A 310-hp, 3.6-liter v-6 is also available, along with a new 230-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Mine is v4 and no issues with full capacity of people inside.

Seats 7 with plenty of room!
It has great seating space. The rear seats just slide up with a pull of a lever. Great on gas. The only downfall I have is when all the seats are up you do not have cargo space. But without the seats up it gives you extreme storage space. You have a great amount of cup holders which is fantastic with extra passengers.

Danger from FIRE
My 2019 GAM Acadia AWD had a Dangerous Issue. When hard braking the Transmission came apart from the cooling radiator, all the fluid leaked out immediately. After repair, the SUV caught on FIRE. The vehicle was a total loss.

Engine stalls
I loved my Acadia Denali 2019 for the first 2000 km. Then the engine stalled while in motion. It was fixed, then stalled again within 30 minutes of use. It was «fixed » again. Then after two days the engine warning light was on again. I do not recommend this car.

WTH !

Probably the best car I've ever had
This is my favorite car I've ever had and I've been leasing new cars for 20 years. It is extremely spacious, has great gas mileage and the ride is so smooth and comfortable. I drive a lot and find this car is set up with features that make my life easier. The radio on the steering wheel, the updated modern console allows me to stream music, receive calls and texts through my dashboard. After being in the car for long periods of time I am not sore or achy from the seats. It has a level of comfortability I haven't had in a car previously.

It's an amazing car to have if you have multiple kids in car seats.
It rumbles when accelerating and also when going at a constant speed. It's very comfortable and spacious. It really is an amazing car with amazing features including the captain seats. It has a lot of safety features which helps ease my mind with having my littles in the car with me.

We overall are very satisfied with our vehicle.!
The truck is nice. I wish it had a sunroof and leather seats but that is our fault for not purchasing a vehicle with the extra features. I am happy with our choice black is a great color. The truck runs very smooth, pick up is good. There is a lot of room and the seats fold making it good for travel. We enjoy family trips. The outlets offered for technology is plentiful making for pleasant long trips especially with family.

Very nice ride! Beautiful interior and great on gas!
Love this vehicle. Tons of room and great on gas! I drive around all day for my job and it has plenty of space but with the better gas mileage to where its very pleasurable to drive. I would recommend the GMC Acadia to anyone with a small to large family looking for space and great fuel economy.

It is a safer car, better on gas, and comfortable.
Smooth ride around rough and uneven roads. Smaller vehicle and it gets better mileage on gas. Backup camera helps not to hit anything along with the cars alarm if you get too close to another vehicle. Ha a blind spot detector do you do not hit anyone in the next lane while trying to move into another lane.

Too small, not enough storage space and is boring.
Reliable but has too little storage space and is too small. The gas mileage is good on the highway and AWD works well in snowy conditions. The Acadia went thru a model change and as a result the vehicle became shorter and narrower than the previous version. As a result this vehicle no longer fits my needs and I am sorry I purchased it.

Good car gets us where we need to go.
Seats are uncomfortable. Needs more room in there. Does not fit all the kids in it. The performances are good. It gets us where we need to go day to day. The price was too much for out money wise. Need more color choices for the car. Needs a bigger computer screen in the car.

Acadia save the day, get yourself one.
Performance, style and modern technology a great plus, roomy for two kids with captain seats.3.6 engine,2 sunroof, lots of inside goodies. Several road trips thru several states was so easy, warranty to on the power train was great. A purchase you can love.

Comfortable ride with great gas mileage.
This car is reliable comfortable and sleek looking! It has every bell and whistle you would need including personal Wi-Fi. The all around vehicle camera is great for parking and reversing out of spots. This vehicle gets great mileage. The option of 4 wheel or 2 wheel drive makes this car great for summer and winter driving. The large hatchback area is very convenient. One negative is this car has a terrible blind spot for the driver on the front left and right side. Especially the drivers side. The heated seats and steering wheel get quite warm and heat up quickly. The back heated seats are great for rear riding passengers. The cooling seats are great too although a bit noisy in my opinion. The pick up is ok but I do wish it had a larger engine for more get up and go. It does help to have better gas mileage though.

There are many reasons to love the GMC Acadia.
Very smooth ride, lots of room, I love the heated seats and the dashboard is very user friendly. There is plenty of trunk space and lots of room to bring extra passengers. Car has a lot of safety features and is very attractive to look at, feels like a luxury vehicle.
accountCircle April M on December 30, 2020
Everything in my vehicle is pretty standard. I didn't get the luxury additions.
Automatic stop when coming to a brief stop is very aggravating. Other than this the sets are very comfortable and very spacious. Would recommend for long trips with third row seating. Gas mileage could be better but will not complain from the vehicle I had before.

2019 Acadia is it a “mom car”?
The vehicle itself has been amazing. I have 2 children and having the captains chairs in the second row has been really convenient because my older child likes to have friends tag along sometimes and we do not have to move anything for them to get in the third row. I do wish that the third row was 3 seats instead of 2, just to have that extra seat if needed but it works for me for now. I also wish the trunk space was a little bigger. When the third row is up it is hard to fit really anything in the cargo area being that there is only about a foot of space. If I had children that didn't play sports, or need a stroller the vehicle would be perfect. I guess I can leave it at I do love the vehicle, it is been great in all weather conditions, I feel safe in the vehicle, I feel like my children are safe, I just wish it was a little bit bigger.

Reliable family vehicle that will safely get you where you need to go.
Car drives well, especially in the winter with the wheel and all wheel drive options. Plenty of space but overall is smaller than previous years models which is a plus, as it is easier to drive. The third row of seats easily goes up and down to allow for additional seating when needed or more trunk room. I have had the car for about a year and half and haven't had any performance issues but the brakes have started to squeak quite a bit and need to be replaced.
accountCircle Christine B on December 16, 2020
GMC Acadia is great but there’s room for improvement.
Steering wheel should have a telescopic feature. It feels like my arms are too extended. It should come in 4 wheel drive, because it does not handle really well in the snow. However it is very comfortable and handles well. I had third row seating which is handy to have. And you can load a lot into it.

Great family car with lots of room
LOVE my 2019 GMC Acadia. It has large seats that are super comfortable. 3 row seats, the back 2 fold down with TONS of room. I haul a lot of product to shows for work so the extra room really helps. Lots of USB ports for the kids to charge their tablets. Overall a really great family car with lots of room a great gas mileage.

Super good and very spaced.
Love it it's nice fits all my kids and spaces good on gas comfortable. Ac works good nice inside nice leather seats you can control the ac from back and front seats you can move your seats back and forth. It's really good to travel in and cool to have.

Safe, comfortable, and smooth.
I really enjoy the safety features of the vehicle; such things as the vibrating chair when approaching an object, the back-up camera, and the airbags all make me feel much safer on the road. Also, the cooling chair options are very nice for in the summer.

Great SUV. Sporty family ride.
Great midsize SUV for family of 4. The small cargo area makes it hard if your a family of 5-6 because you are not going to have room for shopping with everyone inside. The captain seats in the middle are great for the people that ride in the third row. The gas mileage isn't too bad for a v6. I get around 20-25.
