Nov 21, 2023

The 2020 GMC Acadia lasts around 200,000 miles, with average battery and engine noise issues reported. At $23,250 to $42,998, it’s a decent value for a midsize SUV with plenty of features for the money.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is smooth on rough roads, the stereo system is easy to use and the optional V6 is powerful.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The base engine is very weak for an SUV, the cargo area is smaller than the competition and there’s not a lot of legroom in the third row.

Is the 2020 GMC Acadia a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2020 is a good year for the GMC Acadia since it offers good practicality and improved reliability. Owner reviews praise the luxurious interior, stereo system, along with the smooth suspension.

  • Safety 8/10 – The 2020 Acadia is a safe SUV, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with blind spot monitoring and a rearview camera, optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control along with parking sensors.

  • Value 8/10 – The 2020 GMC Acadia is cheaper than many other midsize SUVs with reasonable depreciation rates, giving it a good overall value score.

2020 Acadia Denali all around great.
Not had any problems. It has over 20000 miles on it gets about 21 mpg all around. Very quiet and easy to drive. We use this as our main transportation whether it is around town or on the road. Would buy again without any hesitation. Dealer service is beyond approach.

2019 GMC Acadia review by joe and Michele.
Third GMC in a row, love my Acadia. Very nice ride, lots of power too. Seats fold down great for the pups to hang out in too. Very pleased. Stereo is great, the duel sunroofs awesome, but just wished the rear seat one would pop open for some fresh air. AWD is great and easy to enable to four wheel drive also.

It rides really smooth and quiet.
The Acadia rides really smooth and quiet. The seats are really comfortable and the interior design is great! My edition has wood grain in the interior making it look so much more luxurious. I like that there is just buttons for the Park, Drive, neutral, and reverse.

The captain seats in the middle row are awesome for my kids.
Smoothest ride I have ever had, great tech. Feels like a luxury vehicle without paying a luxury price. Captain seats in middle row are super comfortable. The entire vehicle is incredibly spacious. Gas mileage is surprisingly good on freeways, not terrible in city.

Great family car, you will not be disappointed!
I love everything about this car! The vents in the backseat blow directly onto the seat so it cools children in car seats. You can control everything from the touchscreen. Foot activated liftgate is great for when your hands are full. The last row has 2 seats so they're more comfortable for riders.

Acadia is a great vehicle!
It is spacious. Technology is up to date and very easy to use. Easy to drive. This is my second Acadia, I personally love this model that GMC products. It is seats plenty of people and still manages to leave room for shopping bags. Great on gas and road trips.

I hate views and GMC terrain.
I have had no vehicle problems in the last year I had a problem in 2015 with a 2010 GMC terrain it stopped working when I was driving because the engine went out and then my sister car went out two years ago because of the same reason and hers was a older car then min.

Acadia Electronics Nightmare!
Had my '20 Acadia SLT custom built with no sunroof, front wheel drive, but all the technology and safety features I could add, including the 12 angle camera system. First night I bought it, we remote started it and there was no audio. Not from the radio, on-star, nothing. Left it with the dealership who said they fixed it. Go to get it, bring it back home, remote started it the next day, no sound again. Went to a more local dealership who said no problem found, perhaps I need to learn how to use remote start. WTF? Went to yet another dealership who finally addressed the problem and replaced the infotainment unit. Verified it worked before leaving, came back home. Rains the next night coming home from work and now I have no camera system. Spent this weekend looking at other cars to trade this thing in on. Had it for 3 weeks and its been in 3 dealerships. Enough already!

Customer service lacking.
Not unless you want cardboard for your sunroof shade. We purchased a new 2020 Acadia SLT in July. The car had less than 800 miles on it when the spring loaded sunshade cover latch broke while sitting in our garage. The summer sun was such that my husband who suffers from sun exposure cancer needed a shade so we are now driving a $40,000 car with cardboard in the ceiling. Two different dealers took pictures and we never heard from either.

PLASTIC SUNSHADE LATCH THAT WILL BREAK
I have had the sunshade problem with the latch and found that 5 dealers in my area DID NOT know how to solve the problem. Do not listen to them------I found a dealer who said it was a 15 minute fix and he ordered the new plastic part and replaced it with no problem. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE SHADE. GMC repair people, WAKE UP and learn how to fix this problem. However, I was also told that this latch may break again as it has not been updated. GMC engineers should redesign this latch as the latch is under continuous spring tension and it will break again. In my view, the latch should NOT be made of plastic. I am a 80 year old female who could easily solve this problem. WAKE UP GMC

Sunroof shade issue.....plastic piece....sad.
No; My 2020 Acadia Denali front sunroof shade latch closer broke. It's a small plastic piece that holds the spring loaded shade closed. The dealer tells me that this small plastic piece , which is held in with two screws cannot be replaced because GM sends the entire shade unit. Not just the one simple plastic piece that broke. ARE you Fing kidding me??? Wake the F up GMC.....what a huge waist. My Acadia has 552 miles and is under full warranty of course.....but...what a headache I'll have to go through to get this repaired at my local GMC dealer.

Stay away
However much you think it is a nice looking truck stay away from them. We bought a white on white truck in good shape on the exterior. However we quickly found out the how much emphasis is put on quality and common sense design into GMC vehicles when the sunroof drain got blocked and filled the car interior into a swimming pool. I quickly found out the issue is a very bad design. Even though I managed to dry the car it fried some of the electrics n now there is no sound / AC/ nor heat. The auto tail gate operation is a saga of its own. The engine light is now lit, indication of the need to change the timing chain. This is a, at best C$2000+ job I am told. In short I have given up on this cash cow and will buy only foreign from now on.

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Acadia?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 GMC Acadia is a very pleasant and practical family hauler, with decent owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the GMC Acadia a 3.6/5, enjoying the comfortable ride quality, but doesn’t like the lackluster weak base engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Acadia a 4.2/5, praising the excellent safety equipment, but owners don’t like the relatively low towing capacity.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 GMC Acadia Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 GMC Acadia include dead batteries, excessive engine noise, along with some stereo system issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year, leading to average repair costs as the Acadia ages.

Dead batteries are the most widespread complaint from 2020 Acadia owners, showing up at around 5,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the Acadia, and some of them may stay on even when the engine is off. Diagnosing the source of the parasitic electrical draw costs around $50, while fixing it can cost $5 to $250.

Excessive engine noise has also been mentioned by some 2020 GMC Acadia owners within the first 20,000 miles. The purge valve is a known weak spot in the Acadia, and can make a lot of noise. Replacing the purge valve, fortunately, is a quick process, only costing about $150 to fix.

Stereo system issues also show up on some Acadia models at roughly 1,500 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo, which improves reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $50 for labor.

There are six recalls on the 2020 GMC Acadia, which is worse than some other midsize SUVs. The most serious recall covers missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator, which can cause the engine to stall. GMC will replace the bolts on affected models for free. Other recalls include the rearview camera, tires, roof rails, and fuel pumps. GMC will change out those parts for free, too.

How Long Will the 2020 GMC Acadia Last?

A well-maintained 2020 GMC Acadia can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $684 per year.

As a used 2020 Acadia reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the HVAC blend door for $200, suspension ball joints costing $450, along with the water pump, which costs around $850.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is great, and includes a relatively large 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a more powerful Bose stereo system.

Standard safety technology is excellent, and features:

  • Rearview camera
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Teen driver mode
  • Rear cross traffic alert

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Front parking sensors
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Rear camera mirror
  • Safety alert seat
  • Head-up display
  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist

Is the 2020 GMC Acadia a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 GMC Acadia is a good value since it offers a good interior paired with decent reliability ratings as it ages. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $23,250 to $42,998, making it less than a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Kia Telluride. When new, the price range was $29,800 to $48,300. Depreciation is similar to some other SUVs, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the GMC Acadia?

What Engines Come In the GMC Acadia?

  • The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that provides 193 horsepower. Paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, this engine delivers a combined fuel economy of around 23 MPG. The 2.5-liter engine offers modest acceleration, with a 0-60 MPH time of around 9 seconds.
  • For those looking for more power, there’s an available 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 230 horsepower. This turbocharged option also works with the nine-speed automatic transmission and achieves a similar combined fuel economy, estimated at 22 MPG. The turbo engine improves the 0-60 MPH time to roughly 7 seconds, offering a more spirited driving experience.
  • At the top of the range is a 3.6-liter V6 engine, which churns out 310 horsepower. It comes with the same nine-speed automatic transmission and provides a combined fuel economy of about 21 MPG. With this engine, the Acadia can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in about 6.1 seconds, making it the quickest and most powerful choice in the lineup.

What Colors Does the GMC Acadia Come In?

How Comfortable Is the GMC Acadia?

The 2020 GMC Acadia is designed with comfort in mind, offering a ride that caters to both drivers and passengers seeking a pleasant traveling experience. Inside the cabin, occupants are greeted with supportive seats that provide ample cushioning and adjustability, especially in the higher trims, which feature power adjustments, lumbar support, and options for heating and ventilation. The interior is roomy, allowing for comfortable seating even on longer drives, and the third row is reasonably accommodating for a mid-size SUV, suitable for children and adults on shorter journeys. Noise insulation is another strong point of the Acadia, with a quiet cabin that reduces road and wind noise, contributing to a serene driving atmosphere.

The vehicle’s suspension is tuned to balance handling with comfort, absorbing most bumps and road irregularities to deliver a smooth ride quality. Additionally, the climate control system is effective in maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature across different weather conditions. For added convenience, the Acadia may include features such as a dual-pane sunroof, providing an open and airy feel, and tri-zone automatic climate control, allowing occupants in each row to customize their climate settings. Overall, the 2020 GMC Acadia provides a comfort-oriented environment that makes it suitable for daily commutes, long-distance travel, and family outings.

How Much Storage Space Does the GMC Acadia Have?

The 2020 GMC Acadia is a versatile mid-size SUV that offers a substantial amount of storage space to accommodate a variety of cargo and personal items. It provides up to 79 cubic feet of room when the second and third-row seats are folded down. This capacious area is more than adequate to fit large items such as furniture pieces, bicycles, or a week’s worth of camping gear for the whole family. With the third row in use, the space behind it offers 12.8 cubic feet, enough for several grocery bags or a couple of small suitcases. With the third-row seats folded, you gain 41.7 cubic feet, which can handle larger items like a set of golf clubs or several full-size suitcases.

In addition to the primary cargo area, the Acadia includes a variety of small interior storage spaces. These consist of a center console compartment for small personal items, door bins that can hold water bottles and maps, a glove compartment for documents, seat-back storage pockets, and an available under-floor storage bin behind the third row that provides a hidden storage area for valuables or additional small items. This well-thought-out design allows for efficient storage, making the GMC Acadia a practical choice for families and professionals alike.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the GMC Acadia was introduced for the 2017 model year.

2015: No major changes from earlier years.

2016: 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot connection added to all models.

2017: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new technology, engines, exterior, and interior.

2018: All-terrain package is now offered with the third row of seating.

2019: No major changes from earlier years.

How Does the GMC Acadia Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 GMC Acadia is a decent midsize SUV, offering plenty of standard features and a spacious cabin, although running costs may be higher than some competitors.

The Ford Explorer is another SUV, which costs about $2,500 more. Passenger room is a bit better in the Ford Explorer, while the GMC Acadia comes with more standard safety technology. We recommend the Ford Explorer, although both are very similar in terms of overall reliability.

The Honda Pilot is a popular midsize SUV, which is available for roughly $3,000 more. Standard technology is better in the Honda Pilot, while the GMC Acadia handles off-road terrain a bit better. We recommend the Honda Pilot since it’s a more reliable choice with some lower ownership costs as it ages.

Sensor and camera issues
A month after buying it, the latch broke on the sunroof. It was $65 to have it replaced. The next month the cameras went out, black screen with a red camera. It went on like this for a couple days. The same day I took it in to be checked, the camera came back on. They ran a diagnostics check on the system and said they did not find anything, but reminded me I needed to clean my car because the sensors don’t work properly if their d***y. My husband cleans my car once a month. A few weeks later, the park assist stopped working and then the cameras went out yet again. May 2021 the vehicle started a new symptom, while turning left, the distance sensor would turn on and brake suddenly. Every time this happens there is nothing in front of me and it happens in the middle of intersections. This vehicle is beautiful, but that is not enough to overcome the sensor issues.

Camera system intermittant
Bought this vehicle 3 weeks ago on a Wednesday. It was in for service on Friday. Camera system would not work. Could not fix; said they needed to order a module. Two weeks later the cameras are still intermittent. I call the dealer, they say they now have the module to replace. Took it in the next day, they replaced the module (I have no proof). That afternoon the cameras were out again. After expressing my displeasure, they agreed to have the car brought in and give me a loaner. Less than 200 miles on the odometer. They say GM engineer will be called in to help determine the cause and repair it. How long? No one seems to know. I will probably have to call in everyday to prod them. I just purchased this vehicle and absolutely love it. The third row seating is exactly what we needed. My children are now teenagers and this vehicle has lots of room for them to spread out and to have room for their sports equipment. The gas mileage is not as great as my ford escape was but the performance is so much better and it is noticeable as soon as you start driving. The sound is very clear and the kids love having their own speakers. They also love that they have their own control over their temperature in the back. I am cold by nature but my son always want the air on now we can both have what we want and I do not have to worry if he is hot. I love that the sale has bucket seats for the 2nd row so I do not have to mess with taking the seat up and down like a bench seat. I also love the power liftgate door.

The new sporty crossover for moms that need the extra room.
So far no problems with my vehicle. I love my auto start, keyless start, different seat warmer options, having a 3rd row, back up camera, Bluetooth, how smooth it drives, how easy it is to clean the interior, the fact that we can all control our own air, and so much more! It is perfect!!

Acadia is a great vehicle!
It is spacious. Technology is up to date and very easy to use. Easy to drive. This is my second Acadia, I personally love this model that GMC products. It is seats plenty of people and still manages to leave room for shopping bags. Great on gas and road trips.

Sweet roomy comfortable ride.
It is roomy with third row seating and very comfortable. Performs very good in the rain and on dry roads it has a lot of power for a four cylinder. It gets amazing gas mileage and has rear lift tailgate for easy access to the back for loading groceries. It comes with six charging ports for everyone in the vehicle and rear air and heat controlled separately which is synced from the dashboard. It is equipped with heated seats both driver and passenger. Includes Bluetooth, hand free calling, OnStar, satellite radio and you can also download the GMC app and plug your phone in and run google maps if you do not want a subscription.

Acadia Denali keeps you warm.
Had problems with the electric parking brake and then check engine light came on. Had to have car towed to dealership after having it for about a month. Like the ride of the Denali. Have owned 3 other Acadias and this one rides the best. Like all the extra safety features like lane assist. Blind spot and forward crash response. The older acadians had more room but less gas mileage. The new one gets better gas mileage but has less room. The heated steering wheel is great for winter driving. Keeps your hands warm. Good combination with forward heated seats. That are designed to heat up when weather is cold out and you use the remote start. Engine performance is good. Great pick up if you need to pass another car quickly. Third row seating is a little tight but still functional.

2020 GMC Acadia Denali is the best SUV on the market.
I love everything about this car. The luxury the comfortability the accessibility. One of my favorite features is the adaptive cruise control, along with the third row, heated and cooled seats, and the heads up display. The car runs very smoothly and gets great gas mileage.

GMC Acadia- great vehicle.
No problems so far! I love my GMC Acadia. Very spacious, dependable, plenty of storage, and a safe drive for my babies! The vehicle it is also really great on fuel and has an auto start and stop function that happens at red lights/stops so you save on fuel.

Safety features for family sized vehicle.
Drives nice, quiet and interior lighting keeps inside well lit while in drive. Spacious 3rd row offers additional comfort with cloth seats. Dual temperature feature available for front passengers along with backseat temperature for rear passengers. Backup camera and rear passenger reminder makes for a nice safety feature.

Great car for all your needs.
I love the captain seats in the middle. The third row of seats is easy to put up and down. The car drives nicely in town and on the highway. It gets good gas mileage. The car connects to my phone and has a large navigation screen. It also has heated seats. Overall, it is a great car!

GMC Acadia, wonderful third row seating SUV.
Recently just purchased my vehicle and have enjoyed everything about it. For a larger SUV, it gets wonderful fuel mileage and is very easy to drive. The features of the vehicle are very nice and it offers a lot of room throughout. Would highly recommend to take one for a test drive or purchase if you are in the market for a third row seating SUV.

AT4 Transmission Problems
2020 GMC Acadia AT4 First year that GMC made this model and I'm wondering if anyone else is having transmission issues? Mine has difficulty shifting from 2WD to AWD and then shakes like a flat tire or something if you go over 15 mph. It's horrible. I took a video yesterday as it's the 3rd time it's done it and twice went into tow-haul mode which isn't even near the other options! It is under full warranty because we purchased it in April of 2020 but good grief what a pain!

I like that I can tell how much gas is left in my tank.
It does not have button to open trunk. I also do not like the auto shut off of the engine. When I stop at a stop sign the engine shuts off then starts back up. This cannot be good for the engine. I do like the room. I think it has enough space for my family of four. I like that I can use my apps through the vehicle. I can listen to my podcasts. I like that there is a warning on the side mirrors when another vehicle is close by.

An excellent vehicle overall!
My 2020 GMC Acadia Denali is an awesome crossover! I love the comfort, the spacious interior and the smooth ride. It comes with tons of safety features, such as park assist and lane assist. It took me a while to get used to the park assist as it vibrates the driver's’ seat. It also has many comfort features, such as heated and cooled front and back leather seats, heated steering wheel, 2 driver memory settings, built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth so I can connect to my phone for a hands free option while driving. My 2020 Acadia also comes with a sunroof for the driver and passenger and a moonroof for those sitting in the middle row. There is quite a bit of storage space behind the 3rd row which is very handy for shopping, soccer games, camping, etc., the rear seats also lay down for more space. It has nice towing, as well as quite a few driving options, such as 2wd, 4wd, towing, mountain driving just to name a few. It has the option for parallel park. Assist, which I haven't used yet. There are actually tons of features that I haven't used yet. It has a 3.6 liter v6 engine paired with a 8 speed transmission which is very responsive and gets decent gas mileage and it shifts very smoothly as well. If I had to improve on something, I wish there was seating for a 3rd person in the 3rd row seat, for a total of 7 passengers. Overall, an excellent vehicle!

Sporty look, comfortable drive.
Comfortable ride. A lot smaller than older Acadia Denali. Not a lot of cargo space in truck. The passenger and driver seat is not as roomie as past versions. Love the sporty look of the exterior! Overall completely satisfied with my purchase. Would definitely purchase again!

GMC Acadia at4 2020. White and new.
No problems currently but it is kind of bumpy on the roads. Probably because it is an off road vehicle. So far everything has been reliable. It has sensors to detect when too close to cars and can auto stop. Seating is very comfortable and spacious. Roomy for my growing family.
accountCircle Kara H on November 26, 2020
It rides really smooth and quiet.
The Acadia rides really smooth and quiet. The seats are really comfortable and the interior design is great! My edition has wood grain in the interior making it look so much more luxurious. I like that there is just buttons for the Park, Drive, neutral, and reverse.

We love our new Acadia. Everything about it “spoils” you.
This car is perfect for us. We looked at others and they were either too big or too small. We had a terrain and always found it difficult to see and drive. Too bulbous. This car is perfectly sized. And the electronics make getting around even easier. My 3 row Acadia provides plenty of storage and room for up to seven, despite being smaller. It drives fine for an SUV. Cargo room is tight with the third row in use, but improves considerably with it folded. However, its trimmer dimensions have less interior room. When it comes to technology, the Acadia offers plenty for the whole family. From an abundance of USB ports to onboard 4g LTE Wi-Fi, passengers can easily stay connected. The touchscreen infotainment system is intuitive and responsive; charging more than one device that requires a 12-volt outlet may prove a challenge, as only one of those outlets is provided.

I hate views and GMC terrain.
I have had no vehicle problems in the last year I had a problem in 2015 with a 2010 GMC terrain it stopped working when I was driving because the engine went out and then my sister car went out two years ago because of the same reason and hers was a older car then min.

20' Acadia Denali rear view camera.
The car has a lot of different features. I have no performance or reliability problems. I have averaged 20 mpg combination Hwy and city miles. My favorite feature is the rearview mirror that is a camera that I can see multiple lanes behind me. I commute 35 miles and the seats are very comfy especially with the heated seat turned on. The only problem I have had is sometimes the surround view camera shows an error message which has been to the dealership 6 times to fix. Other than that it is a great family or large group SUV. It fits my 6 feet 3 inch husband in the front seat or the back seat.

Tech features and safety of GMC Acadia.
I really like how the car has some very good safety features and how it performs under the high pressure winters where I live. It has shown that it is very high quality and is not going to break down due to some flimsy fault. This gets my trust I the car, allowing the trip to be more relaxing. It also has a lot of tech features, so I can hook up my phone to the display, and do actions without touching my phone.

The GMC Acadia- great vehicle for fun and work.
I have a white GMC Acadia. All wheel drive. Very nice vehicle. Only issue so far was a flat tire. Good size and plenty of room. Very well built. I got the ceramic paint protection that has done a great job keeping the nicks and scratches away so far. I also have OnStar which came in handy when I had my flat tire. Definitely recommend that for safety reasons. It also came with Sirius radio which provides a great selection of entertainment. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for nice sized vehicle.
