2007 GMC Envoy Review: A Pretty Good Mid-Size SUV at a Pretty Good Price

Gilbert Smith
May 20, 2023

The 2007 GMC Envoy is neither the best mid-size SUV released in its model year, or the best for the price. But, with typical listing prices starting at just over $5,000, it’s on the list, and it’s more cost-effective than a comparable Ford Explorer.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
The 2007 GMC Envoy is a capable, spacious road-tripper with a long list of standard features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
A 2007 Nissan Murano does pretty much everything the Envoy does, but with better fuel economy and a longer life expectancy.

Is the 2007 GMC Envoy a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – The 2007 GMC Envoy is the very definition of a pretty good SUV. There are better vehicles in this size class, but the Envoy is comfortable enough and capable enough to justify the sticker price.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Seating is spacious, but some passengers find the rear suspension a bit wobbly.
  • Reliability 7/10 – Maintenance costs are low and there are no major mechanical issues to look out for, but the original transmission might not make it to 200,000 miles.
  • Safety 7/10 – Crash test ratings are mediocre, but StabiliTrak and anti-lock brakes come standard.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – The base i6 engine averages 16/22 miles to the gallon, which is acceptable for a 2007 mid-size SUV, but unimpressive.
  • Value 7/10 – At typical Kelley Blue Book prices, the 2007 GMC Envoy is priced fairly, but shop around and see if you can get a good deal.

Small Repairs for 2007 GMC Envoy/Denali.
The 2007 GMC Envoy had some electrical callbacks for power windows and seats. I have had to replace the actuators for the A/V blower twice and there are some problems with Stabilitrak when new tires are installed. The radio sometimes receives outside signals causing a high pitched whir.

Excellent truck for the long haul.
Never had one day's trouble with my vehicle. Drives off road great. My vehicle gets decent mileage. I have always had GMC and/or Chevy vehicles. All of my vehicles were or are SUV's. I have always had Envoy's and Blazers. All or the trucks were 4 wheel drive. My truck has plenty of legroom. My SUV has great cargo space. It has held up well for 12 years.

Perfect vehicle for families with kids & pets and the travelers at heart.
My envoy has become to be my favorite vehicle. I have a Labrador and a mastador and my envoy fits them and my family comfortably with still having space. If you have kids the envoy would be perfect for you to fit car seats in plus mine has leather seats. Having dogs and kids in my car this is a godsend. The drive is smooth and I like the height I feel I can see quite well. The glove box is nice and big and the trunk is perfect size for anything, moving, camping, wheelchairs, etc. I do wish it came with a Fab, or the ability to unlock on both sides of the vehicle. Only unlocks on driver's side. I also noticed that when driving the speed catches up on you at first so be vigilant. Overall 8/10.

GMC Envoy very reliable vehicle
My Envoy has performed very well never having any major issues. I've kept it up to date on servicing rotation of tires during the servicing. Have had the brakes replaced and currently has only 86783 miles on it. Love this vehicle. Would purchase another one when this one is worn out.

It has 4 wheel drive and a hitch.
Body is already rusting and the front end suspension is always needing something fixed. When running the a/c I only get maybe 6-7 mpg and that is not good at all for how much gas is.

Never. I've had the envoy for 6 weeks and had nothing but problems. The starter shorted out on the block which caused major electrical issues and turned the antitheft system against me...the owner. I still cant get around it and the dealer wants $300 to tell me it's the antitheft and then upwards of 5 to 700 more to reprogram the computer and keys. I will never purchase another envoy and maybe not anything made by parent companies.

Lots of space in a reliable vehicle.
I love the amount of room in my vehicle and the windows. The sunroof is a great added feature. The 4 wheel drive is amazing in the snow of an Ohio winter. It is a very reliable vehicle. I would prefer a slightly smaller SUV as my next vehicle. I definitely recommend.

I like to color and how it rides; except for problems.
The driver seat stop working and always have to get it fix; you adjust the seat. The headlights keep going out and we just got it fixed a few months ago; now we have to take it back in and see what's wrong with it again. It drives nice. We had a brake that blew and we had to get it fix. Buying a used vehicle is sometimes not good. The vehicle is starting to become a money pit to get it fix.

What Do Critics Say About the 2007 GMC Envoy?

Consumer Reports liked the basic design of the roomy GMC Envoy, but they were unimpressed with the SUV’s wonky handling and uncomfortable seat belts. They noted long braking distances, as well, but give the vehicle points for including stability control as a standard feature.

Kelley Blue Book recommended the GMC Envoy as a more cost-effective alternative to the pricey Yukon, praising the generous leg and head room. They note that the rear suspension feels a bit weak, leaving you sagging on city streets and hitting bumps a little too hard off-road.

Edmunds liked the GMC Envoy’s engine lineup, comfortable ride, and intuitive control layout. They list numb, loose steering, and cheap-feeling interior trim materials in the minuses column.

What Common Problems Does the 2007 GMC Envoy Have?

The 2007 GMC Envoy has generated 273 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 73 of these are for electrical issues and 74 are for exterior lighting, with the recurring issue being daytime running lights failing to engage due to a control module malfunction. A recall was issued in 2015.

66 fuel system complaints point to issues with the fuel gauge. Drivers are reporting inaccurate fuel level readings and, in some instances, the check engine light coming on at the same time as the low fuel light.

Power window switches have been recalled 4 times, with the last instance being in 2015. The last complaint on the matter was registered in 2017. At this point drivers may be more likely to chalk it up to wear and tear, but it’s worth checking to see if your car has a window switch recall open.

The 2007 GMC Envoy has been recalled 5 times in total, which is average for a vehicle of this age.

How Long Will the 2007 GMC Envoy Last?

Drivers typically report the GMC Envoy lasting around 200,000 miles. A handful of drivers have reported mileage as high as 400,000, but you have to bear in mind that a used model is carrying all the wear and tear of multiple drivers.

Repairpal estimate an annual maintenance cost of around $459, which isn’t bad for a mid-size SUV from this model year. The most expensive common repairs include new intake manifold gaskets, starting at around $609, and door mirror replacements at $567.

accountCircle Judy F

It has always been reliable. It needs a good tuneup right now and our dash lights are out (my son is trying to figure out why), but other than that is an awesome vehicle.

accountCircle Jill D

Yes it is very reliable and I have no problems with it. I would purchase another of the same. My sister in law also owned one in the past.

accountCircle Patricia E

It is very reliable. I have had to do only some minor repairs on it not including new tires and regular maintenance such as oil changes

accountCircle Seth M

No. Its suspension always has something wrong with it. The check engine light comes on periodically, things are rusting quickly and breaking

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2007 GMC Envoy ranges from adequate to impressive. CD players come standard, and the SLT includes an MP3 player and touch-screen navigation. As an added bonus, all models come with a CD storage compartment in the center console.

Safety technology in the 2007 GMC Envoy is good for the model year. StabiliTrak and anti-lock brakes come standard, and you’ve got full airbags with occupant sensors.

Is the 2007 GMC Envoy a Good Value?

The 2007 GMC Envoy is a good value, but it’s a better road-tripper than it is a daily driver. An entry-level SLE will typically list for around $5,172, while a high-end Denali usually goes for around $6,574.

These prices are fair, and repair costs are modest. But fuel economy isn’t great. This is a mid-size SUV that’s almost old enough to go bar-hopping, after all. And, if you buy a model with 150,000 miles on the odometer, you might only have another 50,000 to go. You don’t want to waste those on grocery trips.

What are the Different Models of the 2007 GMC Envoy?

The 2007 GMC Envoy is available in three trim levels, from the base SLE to the high-end Denali.

The entry-level SLE features:

  • Premium cloth seating
  • CD player
  • Tri-zone manual air conditioning
  • Anti-lock brakes and traction control
  • Cruise control

With the mid-range SLT you’re adding:

  • Leather seating
  • Heated mirrors
  • Tri-zone automatic air conditioning
  • 8-way power-adjust driver seat
  • MP3 player and touch-screen navigation system

Finally, the top-of-the-line Denali adds:

  • Heated front seats
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Bose premium sound system

What Engines Come In the 2007 GMC Envoy?

  • The base engine in the SLE and SLT model Envoy is a 4.2L inline-six delivering 291 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission in rear/four wheel drive, and it averages 16/22 miles to the gallon, city/highway. The i6 can tow up to 5,200 pounds.
  • Denali model Envoys come packed with a 5.3L V8 engine delivering 302 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic in rear/four wheel drive and it averages 14/20 miles to the gallon. The Denali can tow up to 6,100 pounds.

What Colors Does the 2007 GMC Envoy Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2007 GMC Envoy?

The 2007 GMC Envoy is one of the more comfortable used mid-size SUVs on the market. Rear seats stretch 56 inches across and you’ve got plenty of leg and head room with nice firm seating.

Some drivers report that the independent rear suspension feels a bit weak, so bring a passenger on the test-drive and see what they have to say.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2007 GMC Envoy Have?

The GMC Envoy offers as much storage space as some full-size SUVs, starting you off with 44 cubic feet with the seats up, and 80 with the seats down. That’s two full-size sedan trunks worth of space with the seats up, and enough space to haul a small loveseat or recliner with the seats down.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2007 was the fifth model year in the SUV’s 2nd Generation, which would run from 2003 to 2009.

2005: The high-end Denali was new for 2005. Lower trim levels saw optional DVD players debut this model year.

2006: StabiliTrak was made standard for 2006.

2007: The five-passenger XL trim level was dropped in 2007, as GMC would make five-passenger seating standard across all other trims.

2008: XM satellite radio is standard for 2008.

2009: Bluetooth connectivity was added for 2009.

How Does the 2007 GMC Envoy Compare to the Competition?

The 2007 GMC Envoy comes out ahead as one of the more cost-effective American-made mid-size SUVs released in its model year. The 2007 Ford Explorer, for instance, is priced in the same range, but comes with steeper repair bills.

A Nissan Murano, on the other hand, gives the Envoy a run for its money, priced a few hundred bucks cheaper, on average, while delivering a more versatile driving experience, handling dirt roads and pavement with ease.

A 2007 GMC Envoy might not be the best mid-size SUV released in 2007, or the best for the price. But, it’s on the list. If you can find one at a great price there’s no reason to pass it up.

Biggest bang for your buck
It's a good running car. Comfortable. Easy access for my kids to get in and out of. The gas Mileage isn't bad for a SUV. It has 4 wheel drive as well so I can take it off road to go camping or fishing with the kids. The way the back window is set up allows easy access for seeing out of. Helps a lot with backing up and parallel parking. There is a separate windshield wiper for the back as well. The climate control ac and heat is also separated by driver side and passenger side making it convenient for both people. The back part has its own vent as well so they aren't having to wait until the warm air or cold air reaches them in the back.

GMC Envoy is a great family car!
I love my Envoy! I bought it used over the summer this year (2018, ) and have already taken it on 2 longish trips with 4 people in it. We were all comfortable and had plenty of cargo room for our luggage and toys we brought along. It has 148, 000 miles on it and rides smooth, aside from a problem we are having with a strut. It does not have many bells and whistles, but it is efficient while being roomy and comfy, with a stabilitrak safety system and 4x4 that helps keep me safe in midwest winter driving conditions. It is my first SUV, and I will not look back!

I love this car so much!!
For the age of my car, it has been very affordable and reliable. I love my car and hope it lasts forever. It has ample space while not being an overly large vehicle.

2007 GMC Envoy pros and cons
Its Okay. Nothing more than the usual maintenance. Not good on gas. Currently looking to trade up to something newer.

My car is great for my big family and I. Just minor problems.
I love my car for the most part. I do not like that the sunroof is broken and I do not have the money to get if fixed at the moment. My a/c is making noises, but it still works. I love the heated seats. I also wish I could connect my phone to my radio so I could listen to music apps off my phone.
