Luxurious interior materials for a full-size truck, and the powerful 6.2L V8 engine makes this an enjoyable truck to drive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Excessive oil consumption is common across all engines, and fuel economy drops substantially when you go with a more capable powertrain.
checkCircleAlternativeBold The Bottom Line
The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 series is the upscale version of the Chevy Silverado 1500, offering all of the ruggedness and a truck in a more refined package you would expect to find in a luxury vehicle.

Great truck durable highly recommended.
Very durable truck I have done regular maintenance and oil changes and had no mechanical issues. Body is in good shape only downfall is the difficulty to clean behind the rear wheel wells so rust is prolific there. Interior is wonderful with the double bench seats plenty of storage room and multiple compartments.

Very comfortable and reliable.
I love this truck it is very comfortable and reliable. I have not had any problems or any bad experiences for the past 5 years. It is not the best in gas economy due to the fact that the engine size is a 5.3l but besides that I am very happy with my GMC sierra 1500 sle.

GMC Sierra a great truck.
Performs well, very comfortable has been very reliable, only oil changes and 1 set of new tires. Use for driving back and forth to work as well as the occasional fishing trip. Have small boat that fits in bed and can load and unload myself. Also used to tow a small travel trailer. Cannot even tell the trailer is behind truck when towing, plenty of power.

Are the best trucks. Smooth riding comfortable.
It is the best smooth riding truck. Gas mileage is really good for as big is the truck is. The backseat is very roomy. The seats are very comfortable. The radio and air conditioner are some of the best we've had. It is very dependable going far off driving. We have had no problems out of it.

Riding a powerful truck in modern day.
No problems so far. Drives smooth and I feel high above everyone and it helps me see everything around me. Brakes are good and tires are very good and long lasting. The bed is very spacious. The windshield is also nicely tinted. The radio they have in there is also very good. The air condition works great.

Bought used with 170k miles.
One issue I have had with this is the oil pressure sensor screen. It plugs up and is and unnecessary part that needs to just be removed. Oil filter is in a tough spot if you change your own oil. Had to change out rear shock absorbers and was a pretty easy fix. The transmission oil cooler lines are blown and need replacing.

Great truck to have and to rely on.
My truck performs great. I have no problems with it. Great gas mileage and does not burn oil. No leaks in the engine, transmission, and the power steering. Great truck to drive and a comfortable ride too. The heater and air conditioner works really good, too. The radio works too.

The internal computer malfunctions alot. It's been in and out the repair shop. The transaction control is unpredictable, and the battery charging is a mess. It's a great work truck looks great runs well for the most part just overtime the mechanical upkeep gets to be a little too much.

White GMC sierra 1500 slt ext cab.
Kinda rough when it shifts gears and downshifting is more noticeable almost klunks. The dealer didn't go over the vehicle at all before they split so it has a need for an oil change. Other than that it's alright. I'd like a sunroof though. And the rear windshield to open would be nice as well.

Read reviews before purchasing. I am not the only one who had engine problems
Had engine problems with less that 40000 miles. Dealership would only "fix" the problem rather than replace engine. Now I do not trust this vehicle to take long trips

Heavy truck takes too long to run
Not fast enough takes to much time and makes noise inside enough room comfort is okay the vents on a.c.not good

It is excellent in the snow and slushy roads. It has the 4 wheel drive to maneuver in inclimate weather.
I like that it is versatile and very good in the winter on the snowy roads but as far as the back seat I would rather have 4 full sized doors. The back is kind of cramped with the half doors and hard to get in and out seeings how the front seat person has to open their door in order for anyone to get out.

What Problems Does the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

2011 is a good year for the GMC Sierra 1500 series based on the total number of complaints. The most common problem mentioned is excessive oil consumption. While this is a minor problem that is easy to take care of, it can cause more serious issues when it is ignored. Low oil levels cause excessive wear and tear in the engine, so it is a good idea to check regularly. Other common problems include knocking sounds from the engine, and cracking dashboards.

There are seven recalls affecting the 2011 Sierra 1500 series, average for a truck this age. Recalls include a rear axle cross pin, intermediate steering shaft, the ignition lock actuator, and airbag inflators. None of the recalls are very serious mechanically, but they should be addressed to keep the vehicle safe and reduce the risk of accidents.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 series can be found used from $15,111 to $23,927 depending on the mileage and model. When it was new it had a price of $21,235 to $47,030. It depreciates faster than average for a full-size truck, losing 40% of its value in the first 5 years.

  • The base model is the Work Truck. It is a basic truck designed for fleet purchases with vinyl seating, an AM/FM stereo system with 4 speakers, and air conditioning.

How Long Will the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Last?

Based on data from owners, a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 series can last over 250,000 miles with proper care. Full-size trucks tend to be long-lasting, so it is average for its class. Repair Pal estimates it costs more than average to maintain, at $705 per year.

accountCircle Jordin K

This vehicle is very reliable and I haven't had any problems for 165,000 miles. The only thing I have had to replace that is not normal is the battery.

accountCircle George A

Mechanically not really only problem is that the transmission slips sometimes and I do not know why. Electronics it lacks off. My ac doesn't blow constantly and it does not have no cabin air filter. My USB port just went out and I cannot no longer charge my phone. Some of the buttons for the window does not work. Like it goes down, but does not want to come back up I have to keep playing with it or go to the other side to put it up.

accountCircle Eva E

It is very reliable. It broke down last week because the fuel pump went bad, but it also had 175,000 miles on it.

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology in the 2011 Sierra 1500 series is not as good as some of its competitors, and it shows its age.

  • Base technology includes an AM/FM stereo with a CD player, 4 speakers, auxiliary input, and OnStar.
  • Upgraded technology includes a high-fidelity Bose stereo system, and DVD-based navigation.
  • For safety there is electronic stability control, ABS, and airbags. Optional safety upgrades include a rear-view camera, and rear parking sensors.

What Engine Options are Available?

The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 series can tow up to 9,400 pounds with the optional 6.2L V8, which is average for its class. Being a full-size truck it is not built for high-speed driving, but it is more comfortable on the road than its competitors.

  • The base engine found on the Work Truck model is a 4.3L V6 with 195 horsepower and 260 lb. ft of torque.
  • Standard on other models is a 4.8L V8 producing 302 horsepower and 305 lb. ft of torque.
  • Optional is a 5.3L V8 making 315 horsepower and 335 lb. ft of torque.
  • The flagship engine choice is the 6.2L V8 generating 403 horsepower and 417 lb. ft of torque.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Sierra 1500?

The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 series is a large full-size truck which may have a hard time parking in some residential garages. Three cab configurations are offered with seating for 3 to 6 people, and comes with a choice of a 69”, 78” or 98” bed.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Trucks?

Based on owner reviews, the 2011 Sierra ranks 9th out of 15 full size trucks. One competitor is the Ford F-150.  It offers better reliability, and is a more capable truck with more power and a higher towing capacity. The GMC is a more luxurious truck with a better interior and a smoother suspension than the Ford. If you need a truck for work, the F-150 is a better choice, but if you want a more comfortable truck then the GMC wins out.

Another competitor is the Nissan Titan. It loses out to the GMC in nearly every category with less power, lower reliability ratings, and it’s more stiff and uncomfortable to drive. The main thing the Nissan has going for it is attractive exterior styling, but that does not make up for its other shortcomings. GMC builds a better full-size truck than Nissan, making it the winner.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Truck?

Our assessment of the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 series is that it is a good truck to buy. Favorable qualities include a comfortable and upscale interior, and a good selection of engine choices are available. Where it loses out is with excessive oil consumption, and fuel efficiency drops off when you go with a larger engine. GMC has made the 2011 Sierra 1500 series a competitive offering in the full-size truck market and it is worth taking a look at.

Subject to rust.........
The frame and body often show rust and replacements are hard to find given so many models have this problem, not to mention this frame has been discontinued.

I enjoy being in a truck.
Starts every time, runs well, wiring issues, the backup camera does not work, left tail light/blinker does not work, it is wiring in the ground connection, the oil pressure sensor went out twice, the shocks are bad, it is clunky and squeaks horribly. Does well in the winter. Rear automatic windows roll down sometimes but will not roll up at all. The driver has to roll them up and down. All seatbelts work. Heated seats work. Air conditioner works along with heat. Radio and USB/aux cord works. Has a CD player. The leather on the driver seat is ripped. Rear seats almost in perfect condition.

Very fast and strong truck.
Very reliable vehicle, I have put 160 thousand miles on it and ran a lot of fire calls in this, I use it as a response vehicle for several local fire departments and it has never let me down, I have a 7 ½ inch lift with 35 inch tires and it still has no problems pulling a 7700 lbs excavator for work, I have pulled many people out of ditches and out of mud with no issues, would highly recommend this vehicle to anybody.

I have had no problems with my 2011 GMC sierra. It has a 5.7l engine and the performance and reliability of this truck has been outstanding. The vehicle is very comfortable and rides really well. It features a am/FM radio, cassette player, hands free phone, the OnStar navigation system, center console, automatic trans., anti-lock brakes, USB ports (2) in front, electric windows, key lock system (remote), and fold-down center cup holders in the rear compartment. Gm needs to step up. Ford is making their vehicles worth the money!
Most gm model vehicles ride rough, they need to fix it and catch up with ford on there packages, trim, smoothness on the road, etc. Gm hasn't done much to their vehicles to really be fancy or smooth out the ride at all. I've had gm vehicles my whole life and I am about to go to ford, do to the basic and rough ride of my truck.

This truck has the long bed and extended cab, so it can be difficult to park. But it has enough room to take family for rides. The long bed really can carry a lot of things. The seats are very comfortable and windows easy to see out with easy to use mirrors. The temperature controls are easy to use for both passenger and driver. The radio has a lot of options with satellite included. There is a double glove compartment and a center console that can be put up for a middle seat in the front.

Overall a quality tough truck.
The only issue I have had were the wheel bearings and tire control arm system. Headlights burn out quite quickly as well. I have the basic model and everything has worked according to manufacturer's instructions. I would like a bit more weight in the back to avoid sliding on rainy days.

Lots of legroom for long trips. The seats sit up high and you are able.
Lots of legroom and the seats are very comfortable. Able to haul large items in truck bed. The back seat is perfect for passengers and offers lots of legs and headroom. The side boards are easy to get in and out of truck. Like the 4 door easy in and out.
