2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Review: Good Year For the Reliable Premium Truck

Alex Showalter
Mar 1, 2022

2017 is a long-lasting year for the Sierra 1500 series reaching over 250,000 miles with only rare transmission issues. At $24,868 – 47,623, it’s worth the money for a luxury truck.

likeFilled The Good
A high-quality interior, easy to use technology and the suspension is very smooth.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The transmission shifts hard between gears, cabin space is smaller than rivals and the base engine is weak.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500: Key Points

  • Reliability ratings are good, but there are rare slipping transmission issues reported. Avoid the 20142015 models, and go with a 2016 or newer.
  • One relatively weak V6 and two more powerful V8 engines are available.
  • Fuel economy is good, getting up to 20 MPG combined.
  • Safety ratings are great, getting a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests.
  • We recommend the 2017 Sierra 1500 since it offers a good mix of performance and luxury for a truck. The Sierra ranks 9th out of 14 full size trucks  based on owner reviews.

Middle aged guys review of a GMC sierra.
I haven't experienced any problems with my GMC. I enjoy the ride, heated seats, heated steering wheel and the overall comfort of the vehicle. The ability to go off road. The ride height is also a plus. I have the 6.5 foot bed and it comes in handy for hauling banal equipment.

I feel very safe driving it in heavy rain and snow.
We use our truck to pull our travel trailer. It is reliable and comfortable to drive. It feels very luxurious inside the truck with a lot of awesome features. Buying from GMC was a very positive experience.

Best truck I have ever had.
Best truck I have ever had. Large bed with a very comfortable ride. Great interior. Comfortable seating. Wide seats. All of the new features you could want on a car. Drives like a minivan. Very smooth. Corners well with great acceleration. The transmission is a little jerky at times but other than that no complaints. They have fixed the transmission by replacing the torque converter. Now it drives like a dream.

This is a very reliable Truck!!
This is the best vehicle I have ever purchased. The ride is extremely comfortable and interior is very spacious. I am 6'4' and I have plenty of legroom. I have had zero maintenance issues with this vehicle in the 46,000 miles I have put on it. The mileage for a half ton is also good, average 19 on the highway and 14-15 in town.

I love my truck and all of the accessories on it.
There are only two things that I would love to have as accessories on my truck. I would love to have an option of two different driver's seat position and I would like it to have the ability to close in the side mirrors from inside. Everything else is great!

Wouldn't want any other truck!!
My favorite part is the slow drop of the tailgate. I've had the 5.3 in all of my trucks so far and haven't had any major issues. All the bells and whistles make for an extremely comfortable truck. The center console has much needed space and cup holders. The backup camera makes reverse a Breeze.

It is a light duty truck that does what I need it to do.
No problems, performs as advertised. Only complaint would be no rear air vents. Other than that no complaints.

Very smooth
Interior is very comfortable, lots of power, transmission shift is flawless, the best feature is the exterior paint.it changes from navy blue to dark green. They have more options stock from the lot then Chevy Silverado. I can go all day with how great these trucks are...seriously have nothing but great things too say. Best bang for your dollar.

Never again
I’ve owned a 2002 Tahoe had 286,000miles when i sold it . Not a minuets problem out of this vehicle. Also had 2005 Avalanche. 270,000 miles tranny takes a dump. Which i thought was wonderful. Gave it to my daughter. “ wish i had got another one” such a sweet riding truck. And now 2017 GMC Sierra. 68,000 tranny shits the bed $4200. 75,000 Miles, pinion gear goes out $1800 I do travel a lot. 100,000 miles AC takes a hot dump. Condenser $1608.00 Truly will never buy a GM product. This truck looks nice, but is a total POS.

The check engine light came on at 21k miles the trouble code that came up was P0302 misfire on the number 2 cylinder the dealership said it was a fuel injector then they said it was a sticky lifter or valve then they came to the conclusion that is was the camshaft and they have had it for 2 weeks now making the repairs, I have 2000 Chevy Silverado that has basically the same motor has 270k miles has never had any problems like this before.

Must have gotten a lemon
Bought this new in 2017. It's beautiful but: at 18 months (1), 42,000 miles, the turn signal went out. The cost was 1,000.00 to change a "corroded wire". All went well for another 18 months, then at 3yrs and 90,000 miles, another wire was corroded (2) and needed replaced (Dealership covered the price). Then within 2 weeks (3) the check engine light was on and it needed a wheel bearing changed and other wires were corroded. S900.00. About 1 week later, the check engine light is back on and cost 120.00 to change some wires. (4). I picked it up on Tuesday this week and on Wednesday (5) the trailer light came on- lots of loud beeping. FYI It does not have a trailer hitched to it, and the check engine light is on again, and the seat is frequently vibrating and can not be shut off. I'm taking it back for the last time and will trade it in for anything other than a GM. So 5 times in 18 months of corroded wires- obviously poor design, because they have not been able to correct the problem. And wheel bearing out at 90,000 miles is a first for all my 40 years of owning pickups. GM has not accepted any responsibility in the poor design or build of this vehicle, which I paid 55,000 for in 2017.

Horrible investment
This is the last GMC I’ll ever own. Injector issues at 49,000 miles and now major valve train issues at just over 50,000 miles. It was in the shop for about a week, I was told it was corrosion and carbon deposits on the valves and on the pistons. (GMC covered that repair). So within 100 miles of it being in the shop it now sounds worse than I’ll wver believe. Check engine light blinking and the traction control on and off, the truck actually shook so much the antenna made a whipping sound!!

Evap Solonoid issue
I bought this truck to work on a each with dirt roads and to pull trailers. In 24,000 miles of operating it has been in the shop 4 times for the same issue. The evap solenoid was replaced three times. This has not been an issue with my older vehicles, not my friends 02 silvered. I can't use it for the purpose I bought it for, so for now I'm reluctant to use it at all.

All around great daily driver...
Performance is good. No issues with anything mechanical at this time. Front end sits a little low on the 4wd for my liking but a basic leveling kit fixes that right up. I like the cloth interior with the heated seats, easy use touch screen. Sleek lines on the good. All around a very good vehicle for everyday use, very reliable!
accountCircle Kathy M
I deliver mail out of my truck, and have to sit in the middle to drive. The seat is not as comfortable as my last truck. It is an inch or 2 wider, making it harder to reach mailboxes. The truck sits an inch or 2 higher than my last one as well. At just about one year old and just under 36000 miles the transmission went. I have had problems with my radio from the beginning, 3 trips to the garage and the clock still loses time and the radio will just reset at random.
I am not happy with it. I wish I had kept my old truck, but it had too many miles and I needed reliable for mail delivery. So much for that.

Top Critics Reviews

  • Consumer Reports found the Sierra to offer car-like handling and average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates it 3.5/5 with good comfort and power, but the transmission isn’t great for towing.
  • Kelley Blue Book 4.1 out of 5, noting powerful V8 engine choices, but no efficient diesel option available.

What Problems Does the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Problems include transmission issues, minor engine problems, and a lot of noise from the brakes. GMC Sierra’s from 20162021 all have similar issues, however models from 20142015 have more problems.

Shifting roughly from first to second gear is the most common issue showing up in the first 10,000 miles. In some cases resetting the transmission computer fixes the issue, but many dealerships report the rough gear changes are normal.

The engine running poorly is another problem at around 7,500 miles. Drivers report the truck idling roughly and vibrations. Using high quality gasoline can help solve the problem, but it’s also a good idea to check the spark plugs.

Excessive brake noise is another complaint in the first 12,000 miles. The brakes tend to wear out quickly when you tow frequently. Replacing the pads and rotors on the front costs around $300.

There are 5 recalls, average for a truck from 2017. Recalls include airbags, owner’s manual, vacuum brake assist pump, and braking software. Most serious are brake issues, which can cause unintended braking.

How Long Will the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Last?

A properly cared for Sierra should be able to reach 250,000 miles, similar to the F-150 and Silverado. Repair Pal estimates regular maintenance costs to be very expensive, at $809 per year.

As a Sierra ages and reaches 100,000 miles owners should prepare to replace items including the A/C compressor for $750, exhaust manifold costing $400, and sunroof motor which costs $380.

Mechanical performance is good. It gets good gas mileage on the highway. I like the rear view camera in the tailgate. I also like the auto locking feature on the tailgate.

accountCircle Patricia C

I haven't seen or experienced any problems. It's very reliable I trust it enough to drive my kids in it.

How Much is the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Worth?

Blue book prices range from $24,868 – 47,623 making the Sierra more expensive than a Tundra or Ram 1500. When new, the price range was $28,405 to $55,955. Depreciation in current market conditions is rare for full size trucks and some models have increased in value.

What Are the Models & Specs?

Base is the fleet-focused model with:

  • 17-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Vinyl Bench Seating
  • Power Windows and Locks

SLE is a good consumer entry-level model, adding:

  • Base technology includes a 4.2-inch infotainment system, OnStar, and a 6-speaker stereo system.
  • Optional upgrades include an 8-Inch touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, and Bose 7-speaker stereo system.

What Engine Options are Available?

Performance is above average compared to other trucks. The most powerful engine takes 6.3 seconds to go 0 to 60 miles per hour and tows up to 11,700 pounds.

  • The base engine is a relatively weak 4.3L V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • A popular engine choice with more power is the 5.3L V8, which has 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • The most powerful engine is the 6.2L V8 producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Sierra 1500?

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 series is a half-ton truck similar in size to the F-150 and Titan, and may have trouble fitting into some residential garages.

Three cabin configurations are available including a 2-door regular cab, 4-door double cab, and larger 4-door crew cab. Passenger space is excellent in the back seats of the crew cab, but cramped in the double cab for adults.

There are also three bed lengths available including 5-foot-9-inch short bed, 6-foot-6-inch standard bed, and 8-foot long bed.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Trucks?

The highest-rated half ton truck of 2017 is the Ford F-150, which is in the same price range. The F-150 has better off-road performance, but the Sierra offers more luxury. Overall, both are good trucks, but the F-150 is a more capable choice when it comes to towing and handling trails.

Another rival is the more affordable Toyota Tundra. Where the Tundra stands out is with better long-term reliability ratings, but technology is more up to date in the Sierra. If you want a longer lasting truck, the Tundra is a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Truck?

Yes, we find the Sierra to be a good truck. We base this on numerous positive owner reviews giving it an overall rating of 4.5/5 with excellent ride quality, a comfortable interior, and no widespread mechanical issues.

Overall, 2017 is a good year for the Sierra, with similar quality on 2016 through 2021 models.

Yes it is but it has some things missing I would have thought would be included like a CD player. I also do not like the fact that the front seat is not a bench seat.

accountCircle Collin S

Yes, reliable and tough. Multifunctional. My husband can use it to move metal and cement at work and we can still use it to take the kids to six flags on the weekend.

GMC truck well worth the money.
This vehicle has been a great truck. I have had no problems whatsoever. On the highway I average about 21 miles per gallon of gasoline. I would definitely buy another GMC sierra truck in the future. It has plenty of head and leg room in the front as well as in the back seat. This is a 4 wheel drive vehicle and it rides very smoothly and quite.

I love the dual air controls and seat heat/cooling option. The big screen for maps is great. We've had very little negative issues with the truck. My capless fuel filler is junk! The spring loaded flap doesn't spring back to seal the opening after fueling up. I thought the fuel system needed to be sealed for emissions? I'm basically driving around with a 1" hole open to moisture, dirt, etc. Can I replace with the old style cap?

A comfortable multi-purpose truck.
I have been impressed with the functions and capabilities of my 2017 GMC sierra. The model I purchased was modified from the dealership. I lift kit and off-road package was added along with the spray in bed liner. I really like the remote start option and heated/cooled seats and heated steering wheel. The back window has a power slide open feature which is very convenient. The seats fold up in the back for extra interior cargo room. This has come in handy when moving friends from home to home. The only problem I have found is the wireless charger in the center console does not work well. I have been told there is an upgrade and the newer models have this fixed, but I have not personally looked into it yet.

Fantastic truck with lots of technological advancements.
It runs good and is a very reliable truck. The seats are not leather so they do not stick to you in summer which I love. Its very technologically advanced and the back up camera is a life saver. Though if it has rain on the camera then it's very hard to see using it but it's helped greatly otherwise. There's buttons on the back of the wheel to change radio channel and volume and buttons to answer calls and other neat things which helps avoid potential wrecks from looking down at the screen. You can also connecting your phone to the vehicle and answer phone calls without taking your hands off the wheel. When we got the truck it didn't have a cover over the battery so it was acting wonky for a while but that's not the fault of the truck but of the person who sold it to us. I love it dearly and have fond memories connected to this truck.

It has been a wonderful truck. Its reliable driving on the freeway long distances and through town. The only problem I have encountered is the driver-side door. Something bent and it doesn't shut, and the door handle broke off so I have to roll down the window to open the door. The seat needs a new seat cover to hide the original (too bad it wasn't made with stronger material and stitching) I thought about getting a new truck next year, but might just do a new transmission and engine since I love this truck.

Sometimes it can kind of be jerky or randomly make a sound as if I ran something over. Gas mileage is pretty decent at 22 mpg as the best I get. It's a double cab so I am not a fan of that as I have kids. It has a really low front end in my opinion. Other than that I love it.

It's powerful and comfortable. Definitely a great family vehicle.
It's a Denali so it has all of the upgrades that make it so comfortable to drive and be in. My commute is 45 minutes one way and I've never been uncomfortable. I love everything about this truck. We lease, but I definitely plan to buy once the lease is up.

They should know that it rides well for a truck not bad gas mileage and much more
I like the way it drives, like the way it looks, pretty much everything about it. No complaints

2017 GMC sierra personal comments.
Great truck overall. Has some issues with the transmission early on around the 2nd year owning it. Very comfortable and reliable. And looks amazing! It would be a bit better if it also had a bit more room in the rear seats. Always get compliments on how nice of a truck I have.

It is a light duty truck that does what I need it to do.
No problems, performs as advertised. Only complaint would be no rear air vents. Other than that no complaints.

2017 GMC sierra slt overview.
I personally drive a 2017 GMC sierra slt, and I absolutely love it. When I initially bought the vehicle it already had 36,000 previous miles. The design and fabric work of the truck is phenomenal in my opinion. Depending on the option selected, whether it be base or an slt depends on the minor details of the truck but all around this truck has been great for me and what I use it for. The only thing I would suggest when buying a sierra between the years of 2014-2018, is getting the certification of the vehicle done and making sure you have the extra power train warranty. Although the truck is great, it has its problems just like any other vehicle. These particular years of the vehicle are known for transmission problems, not saying all sierra’s bought are guaranteed to malfunction but I would be cautious in which particular truck is settled upon for purchase, especially if it is a used sierra.

Perfect family vehicle with style.
Very reliable. Excellent fuel mileage, very roomy cab! Love all the features including heated and cooled seats, sunroof, heated steering wheel, remote start, auto defrost mirrors. Only downfall is that the headlights cannot be shut off while driving which I recently found out while driving through a Christmas light park otherwise I love this vehicle.

Beautiful looking GMC Denali. Has all the bells and whistles.
The dash computer screens often do not turn on. To many computers. You cannot see the radio or the driving information. It says service drivers assist often and does not seemed to ever get repaired often. We joke the truck is haunted as it does what it wants. Maybe to much technology for us.

Luxury in a pickup truck.
No complaints. Comfortable to travel in. Practical utility vehicle for transportation of materials.

GMC 1500 sle 4.6 liter - review.
I had a factory recall on an ac line that went out 3 times. Service was great and I never had to pay a dime. They finally replaced it with a part that wouldn't wear out. Other than that I have loved it. It's only a half ton and I normally drive 3/4 tons.

Can pull a 20 foot trailer without a problem.
Genuinely a great truck. Reliable, good looking and very comfortable. It is a big enough truck to load your do it yourself project. I have a 20 foot enclosed trailer that I pull once a month and I have never had any issues. I do not even feel the trailer going down the highway. The only thing I would change about this truck is the color. It is black, takes me a lot of time to get it all shined up. I would recommend this truck to anyone that is looking for a pickup to daily and does not want to go into big debt getting a big diesel truck.

GMC tops every dealer on the market!
My GMC is the best running vehicle I have ever owned. I absolutely love it. There is never any mechanical issues or software issues (such as navigation and electronics). The only issue I have experienced is the charging dock on the center counsel does not work, but I think the owner before me had put keys or other thing on it which you are not supposed to do. The Bose sound system in the vehicle is my absolute favorite! It is so loud and stays clear. The vehicle drives well, accelerates fast, and does not give any mechanical issues at all!
