Dec 21, 2022

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 lasts around 250,000 miles with some brake system and transmission software issues reported. At $34,091 to $58,968, it’s expensive, but worth it for a truck that can tow a lot with an upscale interior.

Towing and hauling capabilities are great, the interior materials are very nice and the new touchscreen works great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is firm on rough roads, the dash looks basic compared to other trucks and the rear seats aren’t as roomy as some competitors.

GMC sierra-excellent choice for a truck. Reliable and great gas mileage.
There have been no issues with the vehicle. The GMC sierra gets excellent gas mileage. All the controls are easy to use. The speakers are very clear and sound great. The truck seems very reliable and safe. I believe the cost is definitely worth the truck.

Fit and finish is awesome.
Absolutely love my 2019 GMC Denali. I have had no issues with the fit and finish of my vehicle. The interior is very comfortable. It is easy to see out of the vehicle. The backup camera is also an awesome feature when backing up or hooking up a trailer. The crew cab has ample room for very tall adults to sit in the rear of the truck.

GMC sierra 1500 slt -2019.
Performs well. Very comfortable. A very pretty truck with nice features. There is spin on the wheels when you take off. Other than that I am very comfortable with the handling of the truck. I do not use the vehicle for moving or cargo but it proves useful when needed. A cover is needed for the back unless you opt for the liner.

Multi-pro tailgate sold me on GMC at4.
The AT4 is an unbelievable off road option with the ride of luxury. No problems with my truck so far. Runs amazing, has the fastest engine I have owned so far (6.2L) and is quiet for a lifted truck. The best part of the truck is the standard 2 inch lift, rugged off road tires, premium sound and my favorite feature is the multi-pro tailgate with built in speakers and steps.

2019 GMC AT4
The new AT4 is the GMC Denali on steroids. The 10 speed transmission is far better than the 2018 Denali 6.2, 8 speed even though it has gotten better from first introduced in 2015. Heads up display with safety alert 2 are some nice features. Dealership with high sales use their points to build limited option cars or trucks, other wise the only way to get one is to have it built. My 2019 AT4 was over 70,000 and has plenty of PDM-LPO options. Horsepower ratings are 435 from the standard 420 horse, with performance exhaust and Cold air intake with a performance ECM tune. You can't get the tune when buying the parts over the counter. Larger than stock red caliper brakes, work very well. However, you loose the front brakes pad wear monitors. Painted fender wheel openings really brings out the luxury of the truck compared from standard black. Back seat is larger than the 2018 crew cab. Of all the trucks I have owned, I'm keeping this one for the rest of my life.

GMC is getting better with their light duty trucks.
I have had no problems at all. I like the heated seats, how you can start it from in the house, the backup camera, back seat itself is a full size seat, and that gives you more room to store things, came with running boards, that I usually had to buy myself.

Steering vibration, shudder
Nope, excessive road vibration on the steering wheel and my dealership can't find anything wrong, they already change tree tires, rotated them, flip 180 degrees the drive shaft, change front hub and still vibrate from 20km worst at 80 km at the point I don't want to go on a long trip...

So many issues
I am trying to return this truck to GMC and they have declined so I am hiring an attorney. Worst truck I've ever had. T 1. Transmission is slipping and throws you forward. Feels like you're getting rear ended. 2. Noise coming from front drive wheel. Swirling noise. I took it to GMC service and was told that the engineers are working on a part for it. Currently no way to fix the issue. 3. Check engine light on. Truck is at 300 miles. 4. Service will not accept responsibility and they are selling these knowing these issues. 5. Current class action lawsuit on transmission issue. Google it. 6. I have requested a buyback on truck and GMC Declined to stand behind their product.

7th time will not start been to dealership 5 times
This is a brand new truck and I didn't think I would keep having problems for the same thing. Numerous times I have walked to my truck get in it and it will not start. I have explained to the dealership that there is a problem and the answer from them is that it starts we they have it. I have taken videos to prove that there is a problem. They have had the vehicle and it wouldn't start for them for two days. They told me they have fixed the problem and I get it home for a couple of days and back to the same thing it will not start. Please if there is anyone having this issue please send in reviews.

Loaded with problems! Shift to park error message, loss of all electrical power randomly
This truck has lost complete a total of 3 times. First at around 2,000 miles the car lost 100% of it's power after the auto start stop shut the car down at a stop sign, and it wouldn't start back up. Dealer said it was a "short-in the fuse box". Has happened again twice since. Dealer says nothing wrong the other two times when I took it in. I have it on video that the car had no electrical power. Not even power for Onstar when your car breaks down like my did, and no power to unlock the doors to get out of the car. The latest issue is a "Shift to Park" Error Message. The car doesn't realize when the car is in Park when I turn it off. So the power will not turn off. What a nightmare. The dealer will not support and now it's starting to cost hundreds of dollars to assess every electrical issue that came with the truck. Oh, and my running board is now broken at 50,000 miles. Cost is about $1,500 to repair. It looks like I am going back to a F150.

Tailgate is poorly constructed
I bought a truck because family got bigger but if I would of known how the new generation product was a POS, I wouldn't of bought it. I bought a truck to put my 4-wheeler and snowmobile behind in the box and the camera in the tailgate as been popping out every time their is weight on the tailgate. The changed it once, said the issue was resolved and the next thing you know, I sit on the tailgate and it pops out again. I'm 23o pounds and I don't think that's the maximum allowable weight on a tailgate and when you look in the book, nothing is written down pertaining to this. Very bad service!!!!!

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Sierra?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Series is greatly improved from earlier years with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Sierra 1500 at 3/5, praising the excellent passenger room, but doesn’t like the rougher suspension.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Sierra 1500 a 4.0/5, enjoying the very high towing capacity, but owners don’t like that it doesn’t have adaptive cruise control.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 include the brake system becoming unresponsive, shifting hard between gears, as well as a frozen stereo system. Overall, these problems are similar to many other full size trucks, leading to average repair bills for a big truck.

The brake system becoming unresponsive is the most widespread complaint from 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 owners at around 12,000 miles. There is a recall for the electronic brake control module software. GMC will reprogram the unit for free on affected models, which improves the reliability of the brake system.

Shifting hard between gears is another problem mentioned by owners in the first 20,000 miles. The issue is most common with the eight-speed automatic transmission. Owners report having the transmission software update fixes the issue. Most dealerships will install the software update for free, while some charge around $80.

A frozen stereo system has also been reported on some Sierra 1500 models at roughly 15,000 miles. This is also caused by a software issue which makes the system become unresponsive, especially with Bluetooth connectivity. Many dealerships will update the software for free, while others charge up to $100.

There are 10 recalls on the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500, which is more than many other full size trucks. The most serious recalls cover the brake system software, which GM will update for free. Another important recall is for the alternator, which has loose connections which can cause the truck to stall. GMC will replace the cable on affected models for free. Most of the other recalls cover air bags, which are common on all trucks.

How Long Will the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Last?

A well-maintained 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 series can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 100,000 less than the top-rated Toyota Tundra. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other full size trucks according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $570 per year.

As a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 series reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the air pump for $550, windshield wiper motor costing $300, as well as the throttle position sensor which costs $250.

accountCircle Julian M

No problem so far. A very minor camera focusing problem shortly after purchase which was resolved. Great.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is great for a truck with a standard 7-inch touchscreen stereo system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s a larger 8-inch touchscreen and more powerful stereo systems available as optional upgrades.

Safety technology is very good, offering a standard rearview camera along with teen driver mode, which allows you to set speed and audio volume limits. Optional active safety features include front and rear parking sensors, rear camera mirror, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, rear seat reminder, pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, along with a surround-view parking camera system.

Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 series is a good value since it offers a lot of luxury and technology for the money. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $34,091 to $58,968, making it similar in price to the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500. When new, the price range was $33,500 to $58,300. The fourth generation of the GMC Sierra 1500 Series was launched in 2019

2015: 4G LTE WiFi added to all models, stronger 6.2L V8 engine added, Denali has upgraded magnetic suspension.

2016: Upgraded touchscreen stereo system, eight-speed automatic transmission for the 5.3L V8, and standard Xenon headlights.

2017: New capless fuel-filler added.

2018: 7-Inch Touchscreen and rearview camera are standard on all models.

2019: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new engines, styling, and technology features.

2020: Turbo Diesel engine added to the lineup, available 10-speed transmission on the 5.3L V8, and optional adaptive cruise control.

How Does the GMC Sierra Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is a great full size truck if you are looking for towing and hauling capabilities paired with an upscale cabin.

The Chevy Silverado 1500 is another full size truck which costs around $1,000 less. Both the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 are built on the same platform, while the GMC Sierra has a nicer interior with more technology. We recommend the GMC Sierra 1500 since you get a lot of quality improvements for the money.

The Ram 1500 is a competitor which costs almost $7,000 less. Passenger room is better in the Ram 1500 models, while the GMC Sierra 1500 has better long-term reliability ratings as they age. We recommend the GMC Sierra 1500, although both are decent trucks worth checking out if you’re in the market for a large pickup truck.

The size and power allow for easy convenience hauling items. There is plenty of room for a family. I absolutely love this truck. All of the features that come with the 2019 are amazing. The tailgate may seem like a gimmick, but I use the features almost every day. It's so accommodating to have the versatility to support random needs. The camera options are impeccable. I find myself using all of the cameras every time I part, to ensure perfect parking. If I have it, might as well use it. The birdseye view, and the front/rear facing views are the best of pulling up to a curb. These are just a few of the many features. I could go on for days.

Nope, excessive road vibration on the steering wheel and my dealership can't find anything wrong, they already change tree tires, rotated them, flip 180 degrees the drive shaft, change front hub and still vibrate from 20km worst at 80 km at the point I don't want to go on a long trip...

Great for large families!
This truck really fits our families needs. The spacious cab and comfortable seats make it great for long trips. The backseat works great for our 3 children and they can travel with plenty of room for their extras. We love the heated seat option as well as the heated steering wheel and XM radio. I highly recommend this vehicle.

This truck is a dependable, comfortable light truck.
This truck has been very dependable thus far. It is a quiet, comfortable ride. It gets good gas mileage for a truck. Has good power for acceleration and towing. Internal features are nice with excellent sound system, climate control, heated seats. Rear seating is a little small if you have teenagers. I have enjoyed this truck very much so far.

Serious Design Flaws DO NOT BUY THIS TRUCK
I bought he X31 SLTbased on the look and yes thenew tailgate. The interior is like a 757 Cockpit but with gosh awful uncomfortable narrow coach seats and features, it sucks. Design flaws include noise, and worse is the center console which is huge apparently goes down to the open chassis as it’s like a freezer in the winter, seriously! Thought it was just due to cold weather outside but with cabin heat set at 78 inside the console storage it’s still 32 -38 degrees or the same as outside temps! Other issue is transmission. When cold it struggles to shift out, and even when warm when you take off from a stop it jumps when shifting out. Do not buy this truck, you will be disappointed. I wrote GMC and got the canned lame reponse go to your dealer as they are experts! Ha! My dealer has 2 service bays, same garage built in 1932 yes not making this up and their “ Certified Mechanic” is named Bubba and I am sure he’s a structural design engineer on the side.

Great truck, cannot complain.
Love my truck, drives like a dream on the road. Gas mileage is fair for a v8 truck. Haven't had any issues. I work in construction so I am almost always hauling materials from job to job and the truck handles very well. Only thing I wish was better was the response time on the gas pedal.

Good looking and comfortable vehicle to drive.
For the most part, I love this truck. It drives great, it looks great, gas mileage is good for the type vehicle it is, and I enjoy the bells and whistles. The only trouble I have is that sometimes it has trouble shifting gears. I can tell by the noise it makes.

Great truck with 1 downside.
Bought a 2019 GMC AT4 6.2L 10 speed a couple weeks ago, great looking, lots of power, rides great, with 1downside, poor gas mileage, lucky to get 15 mpg highway, not good. I traded a 2017 Silverado LTZ 6.2L 8 speed which got 18 to 20, with the 2019 AT4 having more technology it's disappointing.

Great Truck
I have owned about a half dozen GM trucks. This one is by far the best one. Solid, quiet, great handling, 6.2 with 10 speed performance is outstanding. Seats are very comfortable and plenty of room. Can’t believe any truck was rated higher. I have been in several Fords and Dodges and they don’t come close.

Unimpressed
This vehicle is a POS. I have a 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 6.2. Unimpressed. Numerous rattle noises, herky jerky transmission, incline and angle indicator is already out, whining noise that I can't find, brakes s**k (1200 miles). WTF GM? Time to look at RAM.

GMC is amazing, and everyone loves the car.
It is an amazing vehicle. There is plenty of seating room in the front and back of the vehicle, and amazing features. The radio is great and the ac works great and quick. The gas mileage is great and it drives super smooth. We love this vehicle and will be buying others, new or old, for the family.

GMC past test with owner very dependable.
My truck performs good, no problems all of my trucks equipment from the factory is working very good. It is a good truck no complaints. The Denali is the top grade GMC and it has shown why it's the top GMC no detail left out of the truck, very dependable.

Best truck on the market!
Smooth ride, large cab for tons of leg room. The prettiest truck I have seen. It comes stock with a 2” factory lift. The leather seats have a tan trim on them that is so nice. The truck bed folds down and you can actually turn it into a step up with a handle.

This is a great truck front to rear. Power, handling are spot on and this is a big vehicle. Read the comments from another buyer about cold console

2019 Elevation vs sle
I own a 2019 Elevation, I did the compare on your website and compared it to the SLE. My truck has automated emergency park brake, sunroof. You marked it as unavailable. When in fact they are available.

Ordinary
So far, 3 recalls on this "professional grade" truck. The dealer kept saying "won't cost you anything" but it does cost you time, gas, and puts miles on your vehicle to get to dealer and back. Leather interior, but not really what you would call luxury. Very very very annoying message that pops up on center screen saying to keep your eyes on the road. It does not time out or go away. You have touch the "OK" place on the screen. By the way - you have to take your eyes off the road to acknowledge you will keep your eyes on the road. Most annoying feature I've ever had on a vehicle. There is no good place to set your purse. The console is a black hole, like most consoles. I asked the dealer to please put the little shallow tray across the top, and was told it was not included. You have to pay $65 for the GM part. We ordered one from the web for $14. Minor but annoying. All things considered I would not buy GMC again.

GM Support??????
Love the truck but when my wife and I both closed our doors at the same time the right side of the fixed glass portion of the sliding rear window exploded. Fortunately most of the glass landed outside on my bed cover and did not hit the passengers in the rear seat. Working with my dealer on a replacement but GM's initial response is that it must have been caused by an impact from the inside. The hole is directly behind the head rest and the head rest does not even come close to the glass so that is not the cause. There were two people in the rear seat at the time that witnessed the explosion and verified that it was NOT impacted in any way.
