2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Review: Reliable Full Size Truck With Good Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Mar 24, 2023

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 lasts around 250,000 miles with relatively minor touchscreen and brake wear problems reported. At $35,000 to $61,984, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a powerful and luxurious truck.

likeFilled The Good
Passenger room is fantastic, the V8 engines offer great power for a truck its size and the safety tech is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The interior is a bit outdated, the suspension is rougher than other trucks and the dash is very busy with a lot of buttons.

Why is the GMC Denali the best.
My GMC sierra is one of the best trucks I have ever drove, it is very practical and comfortable. The front seat are comfortable and have duty if you are the kind of a guy or a woman that goes in rough roads and gets and enters the truck a lot it is the best your back wouldn't hurt like other trucks. And the Denali that I have is luxury in my and a lot of people's eyes the Denali is the most luxury truck you will ever drive.

Fantastic fuel economy and comfort.
The vehicle is great. I have the 3.0l diesel duramax in the 2020 Denali and it is amazing. I regularly get 25-30 mpg and have enough space for all my friends and dogs in the vehicle. Overall I love the truck and do not see myself getting anything else for a very long time.

Great truck, but beware of hitch/tailgate issue.
I love the heated and cooled seats, as well as the comfort of the seats. The multi-way tailgate has already come in handy more times than not, I only wish I'd have known that there was an issue with being able to leave a hitch attached to the truck when I purchased it. Because of the food down tailgate, when it folds down fully, it strikes the standard hitch. So a special hitch has to be purchased, and that is an additional $340...

Best pickup on the market, real professional grade.
This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. All the bells and whistles are just amazing. This truck also comes with tons of security features like adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, lane assistance, forward collision sensor, etc. The leather seats are very comfortable and have heating for the winter and cooling for the summer. The 6.2 liter v8 engine runs smooth, is not too loud, and has an auto-stop feature to help save on gas. That is important because it is obviously not the most fuel efficient motor out there but has a lot of power and torque. My favorite feature is the multipro tailgate with six different functions. The truck itself handles itself fantastically in all ways and provides your best ride ever.

Gorgeous truck with a smooth ride.
So far no problems. The truck rides incredibly smooth. The seats are incredibly comfy and the cab is very spacious. I love the automatic start feature, it turns on my seat warmer and my steering wheel warmer. It has a great stereo and is set up with apple play which is an awesome feature. It also can have Wi-Fi and OnStar.

Worst truck every so far
We have had this vehicle back to the dealer numerous times as it shakes violently especially pulling the boat! We have other trucks and it does not shake and they keep wanting to blame the boat for this but, we were having issues with normal driving prior to them replacing 3 other tires. There has been NO change when pulling the boat but yet our other two trucks can pull it fine? Getting very aggravated with telling us everything is within specs? My phone never connects first and always have to keep selecting it even though mine is priority. Cool air is almost non existent in the drivers seat

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Sierra?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 offers unique tech features not found on other trucks, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Sierra 1500 at 3.7/5, enjoying the efficient engine choices available, but doesn’t like the infotainment screen taking up a lot of space in the dash.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Sierra 1500 a 4/5, praising the luxurious interior in the Denali model, but owners don’t like the lower max towing rating.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series include the touchscreen freezing, premature brake wear, along with excessive battery drain. Overall, these problems are similar to other large trucks on the market, leading to average repair bills as it ages.

The touchscreen freezing is the most widespread complaint from 2020 Sierra 1500 series owners in the first 5,000 miles. There are software updates available for the touchscreen which improves its reliability. Most dealerships will install those software updates for free, while some charge around $50.

Premature brake wear has also been reported on the 2020 Sierra 1500 in the first 10,000 miles. If you use your truck to tow and haul a lot of weight then the brakes will start to wear down quicker. Replacing the brake pads costs around $500, while new rotors are roughly $800. There are some stronger brake pads which last longer on the market too, which cost about $600.

Excessive battery drain is another issue in the 2020 GMC Sierra in the first 20,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the Sierra which sometimes draw power while the truck is parked and off. Diagnosing the problem costs around $50, while fixing it can cost $20 to $200, depending on the source.

There are 10 recalls on the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series, which is more than many other large trucks on the market. The most serious recall is for the driveshaft, which may separate in some cases. General Motors will replace the driveshaft on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the fuel pump, along with tires, which GMC will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Last?

A well-maintained 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 can last around 250,000 miles, which is only around 50,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Tundra. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other full size trucks according to data provided by Repair Pal at $635 per year.

As a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel evaporative canister for $425, transmission oil pan gasket costing $300, along with the active suspension height sensor which costs $150.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series with a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto capability. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen along with a premium sound system.

Standard safety technology is basic for a full size truck only, offering a rearview camera.

Optional advanced driver assistance features available include:

  • Head-up display
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert
  • Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rearview mirror with integrated camera display
  • Lane departure warning with lane keep assist
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Safety alert seat which vibrates when there are potential hazards

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series is a good value since it offers more luxury than other full size trucks while still being capable of towing and hauling. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $35,000 to $61,984, making it more than a Nissan Titan or Ram 1500. When new, the price range was $29,600 to $58,900. In current market conditions depreciation is non-existent, but in normal conditions expect the truck to lose about 6% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the GMC Sierra?

There are six models of the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series offered from the entry-level Base model all the way through to the more luxurious Sierra 1500 Denali. The Sierra comes standard with rear-wheel drive, while four-wheel drive is available as an option.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the GMC Sierra 1500 series came out for the 2019 model year.

2015: Stronger 6.2L V8 engine offered, 4G LTE WiFi offered on all models, Denali model has an upgraded magnetic suspension.

2016: New eight-speed automatic transmission added to 5.3L V8 engine, standard Xenon headlights, upgraded touchscreen stereo system.

2017: Capless fuel-filler added.

2018: Standard 7-inch touchscreen and rearview camera on all models.

2019: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new styling, engines, and technology.

2021: Double cab model removed from SLT and AT4 models, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offered.

How Does the GMC Sierra Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is a great full size truck since it offers a lot more luxury than the competition on the market, although for the luxury and latest technology you do sacrifice some long-term reliability.

The Ford F-150 is another popular truck which starts at about $2,500 more. Towing performance is better in the Ford F-150, while the GMC Sierra 1500 series has a better interior for the money. We recommend the Ford F-150 since it’s a better all-around truck, although both are worth test driving to see which one you prefer.

The Toyota Tundra is another truck available in the same price range. Long-term reliability ratings are better in the Toyota Tundra, while the GMC Sierra 1500 series has a more luxurious interior. We recommend the Toyota Tundra since it lasts longer, although both are worth taking a look at to find the right truck for you.

The overall truck is great. The miles per gallon is about 21-23 on long trips of over 100 miles. In the city the miles per gallon is about 18-19. The truck has the automatic engine shut off when at stop lights. This feature helps save a lot of gas especially here in the city. The two front seats have seat warmers. There is the option of having both the butt and back warmer or just the back. The air controls are dual so driver and passenger can have two different temperatures. The backseat has plenty of room.

No problems or issue with the truck. I wish it had features like ford does. OnStar is nice, but it comes with a $30 monthly, but ford’s GPS is free. Auto hold and high beam features are also nice to have. One key area that annoys me is the windshield washer fluid button! It is way too hard to press.

Stay away!
Worst vehicle I’ve ever purchased. The computer system shuts your truck down for 10 minute updates. Driving and the whole screen becomes in accessible, no calls out, no volume control. Spent 20 min on the side of the road. Unable to diagnose and wouldn’t send road side. Expected far better for the price

Do not buy a gmc transmissions fail regularly
$50000 new in 13. $10000 in recalls and repairs now transmission failure , les than 141000. Km Too many problems to list!! Do not buy!! Gmc is junk unreliable!!! Unless you want to count the reliability of the the transmission to fail!

More truck and more power.
Best driving truck I have owned. Lots of power from the 6.2 v8. Suspension is tight when you need it to be. Sounds amazing. The room in the back seat is first in its class. I am 6,4 and can ride in the back. The multi gate is a great feature I didn't think I would use but is a nice bonus.

Awesome truck
First 1000 miles, just enjoying the ride and learning all the features. Have a couple of things that are a bother. The updated seat ventilation on the Denali is almost useless. On the maximum setting, there is almost no air flow thru the seats, so expect some sweating on hot days with the leather interior Just got back from the dealership and told that all is working correctly, disappointed. Also unhappy with the infotainment system, have to manually connect phone every time you use the vehicle to get messages. Previous years software was much more user friendly. I like the ride and almost no road noise, pro tail gate is handy.

My truck is the best vehicle I have had the privilege to own.
I went from an suv to my truck and I do not regret that decision at all. I live everything about my truck but I do miss park assist. The interior is beautiful and the way it drives on those long car rides is amazing. I also get really great gas mileage both on the highway and in town. I'd highly recommend my truck to anyone that would listen.

Love the new tailgate
Only problem was with the backup camera and the dealer fixed it. Love the performance and fuel mileage with the 6.2 L engine along with the ride and comfort.

3.0 diesel Overheating
Purchased this truck on March 9th heading back to the shop on March 12. The engine is overheating to 230 sometimes 240 I was super excited about this truck. Me and my wife saved every penny we could to purchase this truck and this has been an absolute headache. Il make sure I think twice next time before buying a GM product.

Excellent truck - more options than everyone else
This truck has it all.. Multipro tailgate, auto hide stepbar, heads-up display, rear view camera in rear view mirror in addition to onscreen, heated everything, and most power/torque in its class. No one can touch it. Solid build. Adaptive Ride Control needs tweaking other than that, excellent bang for the buck.

The ultimate luxury pickup truck.
I purchased my 2020 sierra 1500 Denali 6 months ago and so far I love it. I decided to go with this vehicle because of the ultimate Denali package. It has everything I wanted, and then some. The sierra performs like what it is, a top of the line luxury pickup truck. It is extremely smooth on streets and highways, and even though it is the 5.3l version, you can still feel some power.

It is awesome. I love everything about it.
Haven't had any issues with my vehicle. Live the comfort of the interior. Live the look of the whole vehicle. The colors are awesome. The ride and performance are everything that I would expect of a new vehicle. So far I have nothing bad to say about the vehicle.

Are some items necessary?
I really enjoy my new vehicle, new vehicles have a lot of bells and whistles and one I believe they can do without is the function to turn off a vehicle while at a stop sign. Mine has a button that you can switch it off, however I do forget sometimes. To me this feature uses a ton of gas. Leather seats seem to come in the newer vehicles and I love mine. They are easy to keep clean but we'll see what they look like in a few years with all of this heat!

New 2020 smooth and comfortable.
New 2020 sierra transmission is finally smooth! New tailgate is highly functional! Inside of the truck is comfortable, high tech, spacious, and luxurious! I wish they kept the sunglasses holder and the garage door opening buttons. The suspension is great in this truck rides like a car!
accountCircle Dillon M on July 24, 2019
The interior is amazing, so much room but has everything you need.
Great truck, smooth, sound reducing and easy to function. The remote start is a life saver and great for hot and humid places. The suspension is great, I had a different make truck previously and the sierra blow it out of the water. The display is the nicest out of all base or lower trims on trucks.

GMC sierra 1500 slt, crew cab.
I purchased my vehicle only a month ago and I love it so far! It is a very smooth and comfortable ride for a pick up truck. I decided on the bigger engine so I can tow more and have more power. Looking forward to having this vehicle for a long time. I have always been a gm owner and couldn’t be happier.

Great for towing, plenty of room, looked of features... Great truck!
My truck has tons of features! I love the big charging pad. My phone doesn't fit on the pad in my car. The truck runs so smoothly, it is like driving a car. There's plenty of interior room for the whole family. It has so many conveniences. It is a great truck!

The truck itself handles itself fantastically in all ways and provides your best ride ever.
accountCircle Shannon F on March 3, 2019
Air conditioned seats are a nice feature I have not enjoyed in the past.
This is a new truck for me. It has been great. Performance and fuel mileage are good. Every bell and whistle I need and then some. Probably the last truck I will buy. Shopped extensively for this vehicle and got exactly what I wanted. Looking forward to using it for a long time.
