The 2018 GMC Terrain lasts around 200,000 miles with some electrical and braking system software issues reported. At $17,650 to $23,550, it’s cheaper than many other small SUVs, making it a good choice for shoppers on a budget.

Steering is responsive for an SUV, the turbocharged engine is quick and interior materials offer a good level of luxury.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s a lot of road noise in the cabin, the suspension is stiff and rear visibility is poor with the large pillars.

Very safe and consume not too much gas. It is very comfortable.
It is a very safe vehicle. It has all the gadgets that are available right now. It used very little gas.

The safety features are the best.
Really reliable no issues, modern features, easy to drive, amazing safety features that really make me feel safe when driving it. Gas mileage good be better but I average around 28 miles per gallon if I am going on a distance drive, but typically I do short commutes in the city where I get around 20 which stinks.

Amazing SUV with all the bells and whistles.
This vehicle is amazing! It is very roomy and is great for traveling with your family or solo. Great for large dogs as well. The seats are very comfortable and it provides a very smooth drive. It has all the bells and whistles you could ask for as well.

The car is stylish, reliable and affordable. It's a great family vehicle without the high end price tag.
I love all of the options it has, such as backup camera, lane departure warnings, and navigation. I also like the push button to automatically close the trunk. I like the bigger engine and it drives smoothly. One thing I wish it had was a heated steering wheel. I like the boxy style of the car also.
accountCircle Reeve D
Excellent diesel power that responds well.
No problems. Extremely comfortable to drive with a turbo boost that gives me extra driving power. Love the control, automatic climate control, heated seats when needed it is a diesel so I get excellent mileage. Although diesel fuel is more expensive it is worth it.

Get up and go and very spacious.
I haven't had it very long but have had no issues. I know 2 people that had older models and they both love them a lot. I would recommend it to anyone of course that could change 5 years from now. However I have enjoyed it very much. It has more power than I would have thought.

The price fit my retirement budget. I also got great service.
It fits me like a glove. It is the right size and I get great gas mileage.

Junk from word go
This vehicle is nothing but trouble. It all started at 2000 miles on our first long trip in Dec. 2017. DEF system harness shorted out and vehicle went into limp mode before we could to dealer. Last 30 miles at 25-45 MPH. Then last August it all went to S*&t. Injector failed and caused emission system damage. Since the time it when into shop for this, it has spent 53 days total in the shop at different times. All seem to be emissions failures and now it has been in shop for 18 day. GMC says no known fix at this times. ETA for repairs is unknown. GMC has denied buying it back and customer service is worthless. IF it ever gets out of the shop, it will be up for sale at a great monetary loss. I will never go back to GMC again. It get 1 star only because it wont let me leave no stars

Faulty transmission, horrible customer service
My transmission failed and Gm did not have a replacement or parts for repairs. Their customer service continually gave me the run around and after 2 months of my broken vehicle sitting on the lot, they offered no concessions and still couldn’t fix it. Gm is a horrible, dishonest company selling faulty products they cannot repair.

Battery will not stay charged
Bought new in Oct 2017 (2018 Denali). If not driven for 3 - 4 days, it will not start. This has occurred multiple times over the 2 years I've owned the vehicle and the dealership is unable to determine what is draining the battery. Now I am being told the many electronics on the Denali's draw on the battery even when the vehicle isn't running and there is no solution other than to keep a charger on the battery if the Terrain will not be driven for 3 or more days.

I love my terrain as far as looks. But I have a 2018 Terrain and am on my 4th battery (counting the original) now. They keep replacing the battery and telling me the battery was faulty. Really? I think there is something seriously wrong with the electrical system. Not happy at all.

Comfortable to drive in every way.
I do not like anything about it aside from the fact that it runs. Road noise is loud. AC is terrible. It's top heavy & feels like it would tip over in an accident. Wind blows it all over the road.

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Terrain?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 GMC Terrain is a premium alternative to the Chevy Equinox, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Terrain at 3.3/5, praising the upscale interior materials, but doesn’t like the limited cargo space.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Terrain a 4.1/5, enjoying the very comfortable interior, but owners don’t like the lack of advanced safety features.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 GMC Terrain Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 GMC Terrain include excessive battery drain, a frozen stereo system, as well as some braking system software issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other SUVs, leading to average repair costs as the Terrain ages.

Excessive battery drain is the most widespread complaint from Terrain owners in the first 5,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the SUV which sometimes drain the battery even when the vehicle is off. Replacing a battery costs around $200, while diagnosing the source of the problem is around $150 more.

A frozen stereo system also shows up on some Terrain models at around 10,000 miles. The software freezes, leading to a black screen on the dash. Rebooting the stereo system usually fixes the problem. There are also software updates which improve the reliability. Most dealerships will install the updates for free, while some charge under $100.

Braking system software issues have also been reported by Terrain owners at around 40,000 miles. There’s a “service brake assist” light which shows up on the dash. Usually this is caused by a software issue which can be addressed via an update which most dealers will install for free. There are also brake sensor failures, which cost around $500 to replace if they fail.

There are five recalls on the 2018 GMG Terrain, which is worse than other small SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the driveshaft, which may fracture and separate. GMC will replace the driveshaft assembly on affected models for free. Other serious recalls cover the fuel pump weld which may fail, increasing the risk of a fire. General Motors will also fix that issue for free.

How Long Will the 2018 GMC Terrain Last?

A well-maintained 2018 GMC Terrain can last around 200,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $687 per year.

As a used 2018 GMC Terrain reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the battery cable for $200, timing chain gear set costing $1,100, as well as the brake booster which costs $600.

accountCircle Megan W

No, this car does not have any problems. I have had some recall fixes but the dealership quickly fixed and no issue at all.

accountCircle Lynn G

No I haven't had any problems or issues with my vehicle. I pray and hope I do not have any in the future.

accountCircle Carmen B

I have her no problems at all with my terrain. It has been a very dependable vehicle. No issues at all. Highly recommend GMC.

accountCircle Cookie M

It is reliable so far, however, there are several recall notices on the Terrain. We are currently in the process of contacting the dealer to have it taken care of.

accountCircle Sue K

Yes it is reliable. I have not had any issues with the vehicle so far. Only regularly scheduled maintenance.

accountCircle Stacy H

None that I know of. The SUV drives wonderful, quick and quiet. Everyone that sees it wants to know more about it

accountCircle Charles C

It did have problems to begin with. The fuel pump went only after 3000 miles on it which should not have happened

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2018 GMC Terrain since it comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen system which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen along with a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is good, including a rearview camera as well as Teen Driver mode, which allows you to set speed and volume limits for inexperienced drivers. Optional advanced safety features include forward collision alert, low-speed automatic braking, surround-view camera, automatic park assist, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensor, blind spot monitoring, lane change alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, as well as a safety alert seat.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 GMC Terrain is a good value since it offers decent reliability ratings paired with an upscale interior for the cost. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,400 to $23,900, making it cheaper than a Subaru Forester or Honda CR-V. When new, the price range was $24,995 to $39,300. Depreciation is worse than other SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

How Does the GMC Terrain Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 GMC Terrain is a good compact SUV since it offers an upscale interior, affordable pricing, and decent reliability ratings, helping it earn our recommendation for shoppers.

The Nissan Rogue is another SUV which is available for around $1,000 less. Standard technology is a bit better in the Nissan Rogue, while the GMC Terrain offers a more upscale interior. We recommend the Nissan Rogue since ownership costs are lower as it ages, although both are decent small SUVs.

The Ford Edge is a larger SUV which costs about $1,500 less. Passenger room is better in the Ford Edge, while the GMC Terrain has a much nicer interior for the money with less cheap plastic. We recommend the GMC Terrain since there are fewer complaints from owners.

Don't Buy!
I loved this vehicle when I bought it, although used it had less that 15,000 miles. Now, it has been nothing but problems. The transmission slips, the touch screen is a total mess, it jumps around from thing to thing and the radio will not stay on one station it just keeps changing stations, if I connect my phone to the car it will just dial random people over and over again so I can not use that feature. I had to have it in the shop as the brakes went out. It will not always start. I am very disappointed in the car because I really loved the look of the car and it is comfortable and classy but just not worth the money because the mechanical issues are to expensive and far to many for a car with low miles.

I do not have details. It is just your basic SUV.
Some of the thing I do not like that it does not remote start or have a lifted tailgate. Those make life easier with kids. I do love that it gets great gas mileage. There is enough room for my German shepherd and my two kids and my 6’2 husband. It is comfortable to drive long distances in.

9.5/10 because I love it, but it could be better on gas.
So far, I haven't had any issues with my vehicle at all! It drives very smoothly, the gas and break are not too touchy, the wheel moves effortlessly, and the fabric seats are so comfortable! I also absolutely love the remote start and backup camera! The only complaint I can come up with is it is not amazing on gas but it is not horrible either.
accountCircle Hanna J on June 14, 2021
Overall it is a good SUV for traveling, gives you lots of room for cargo.
I personally do not have any issues with my 2018 GMC terrain. The push button gear shift in the 2018 was a little bit of a challenge to get used to however, I have gotten used to it and I actually like it. I highly recommend the nine speed turbo it really helps with the get up and go. It gets good gas mileage. I do wish my 2018 had the XM radio capability. I do sometimes have issues with my radio updating and it is not updating correctly which can be an issue.

Stylish vehicle with a smooth ride.
The performance on this vehicle is very nice. It has a very smooth ride. I also live the fact that it shuts off, when I stop at a light or stall for any reason to help conserve gas. Trunk space is important to me and this vehicle has nice space, and also the back seats fold forward to allow for moving large objects. The onstar system has been another big hit for me. I love that I can just press the button and be connected to a representative. Another feature that is nice with onstar service if your car is ever stolen, they are able to track it and shut down the engine. I chose cloth seats because I have never cared much for leather because of how hot the seats can become in the summer and cold in the winter. Also I love that my phone automatically connects to the Bluetooth once I am inside. It also reminds you that if you've opened either of the back doors, once you've parked and opened the driver's side door it reminds you to check your back seat- which is a child safety feature... Also for child safety it has the safety locks that does not allow them to open their door from inside. The navigation system is built into the system so that after you speak with on-star the send the directions straight to your vehicle's navigation, which comes up on your touch screen and also announces over your speakers the directions. The city mpg is not what I hoped for but that's the only negative thing that I can think of. But the overall performance of the vehicle is above my expectations.

I love the features on my car including the backup camera, heated seats and steering wheel, touchscreen. It drives great, is very comfortable. The hands free opening feature for the trunk is very helpful when shopping. I also love the keyless lock and unlock feature on the doors. The gas mileage is very reasonable.

Its red and I love it. I really love it.
I really like the smoothness when driving on the roads. But a problem that I am concerned with is that whenever I stop for a long time, the car just stops, like it turns off then turns back on so I don't know if that is normal or not. But whatever I guess that is how it is right.

Great gas mileage! Perfect for an active family.
Very good on gas mileage. Average 30 mpg. Extra maintenance needed due to it being a diesel. Put on fuel additive to help keep pipes clean. Roomy interior. Large and spacious back seat. Only real complaint/annoyance is the auto stop to save on fuel. Car shuts off when you come to a stop and restarts when you release the brake pedal.

Pros & cons - trunk space, compatibility, look interior and exterior.
Disappointed with interior, outside shape recently changed, preferred old look of terrain. Pick up speed is good, apple carplay compatibility, and trunk space are all positive. Enough room in back, good small sized SUV, for a family. Would lease a GMC again.

Tire wear
I have the 2018 GMC Terrain, it currently has 28,000 miles on it. I live in New York so I have to bring my car in for a yearly inspection. When I brought my Terrain in to be inspected I was told that it failed due to the front tire. I was also told that the two rear tires would haveto be replaced soon also. The tires are the stock tires that came on the car which were Michealin. I was told by the mechanic that the tires are soft and they wear down quick. I ended up replacing all four tires. I’ve never had to replace tires on my car before 30,000 miles unless they were damaged. Is this a common problem with the 2018 GMC Terrain?

Great vehicle overall! Does not have all of the “gadgets” like sunroof, button controlled trunk, etc. But, this is really a great gas saver and it runs very smoothly! Recommendation for the 2018 GMC terrain.
The 2018 GMC terrain was the first year of the new body style. I got used to not having a shifter and there is more cpu space. There were some minor electrical issues, but overall it provides a comfortable ride. I think many of the problems have been worked out in subsequent vehicles.

Comfortable on long trips, can pull seats back, camp in, drives great off road.
A couple of problems I have encountered are that there is not a lot of room in the front seat after putting an infant car seat in the back and moving front seat forward to have room, also sometimes the screen will go black and not work properly until the car is turned off and back on, another problem I've noticed is that when you roll the back windows down there is a terrible loud noise from the wind rushing against the window, also the back door trim does not completely match up to the rear side of the vehicle. Has always been a reliable vehicle, great turbo performance, seats are comfortable and interior is easy to clean, great features. This vehicle has never let us down or got us stuck. I feel very safe in this vehicle and love driving this car.

The fold-flat seats including the front passenger seat is very useful for cargo purposes. The car gets very good gas mileage. GMC terrain: top class mini SUV.
The GMC terrain is by far one of the most reliable small SUVs that I have ever had in my life. Originally I had a Hyundai Tucson for about five years. I use to think that it was the best mini SUV but once I started driving the GMC terrain it changed my whole mindset on what I thought was a good SUV. For starters, it has a very sleek look in all black. The trim looks amazing and the GMC grill is one of my favorite designs. Performance is very good as well. The terrain has a very smooth ride and has a somewhat decent take on fuel. The only thing I do not like about the terrain is the fact that the layout or style that I have only takes on premium. I am not sure if any of the other ones do or do not but the one I have does. Premium cost way too much and knowing that my car only takes it can be a little frustrating. For the interior, the leather seats feel great and look great, dashboard has a nice display and the steering wheel has a nice design. The overall interior is just amazing in both style and comfort. The GMC terrain is just really an amazing car for me. Even with having kids and knowing that they enjoy being in the car just makes it even better in my eyes. I would definitely refer this car to anyone that has ever considered getting this car. There is not any other mini SUV that is out in the market that has the same effect on me than this one. You cannot go wrong with this vehicle.

Love my rugged but cute terrain.
I love the rugged look, does not look like a chick SUV. I love my panoramic sunroof/moonroof. I love my car so much I am planning on leasing another terrain. I did have issues with my transmission in the first few months, but did eventually get it resolved. My sle is a level 2 with upgraded features which made me want to look into getting an slt for my next vehicle.

Paradise Island on wheels!
This car is a dream come true on wheels. It is spacious but not bulky. Good sized for women to get off while wearing heels. Beautiful finished colors. Sound system is perfect for every single music genre. Comfort level is phenomenal. Warmup seating is a nice plus.

Review of 2018 GMC terrain sle.
I love my car because it is very easy to drive and is very comfortable. It is also the perfect size to fit my whole family including 2 boys. I also think it is very nice looking despite being the cheapest model. My only issue with the car is I do not like the automatic shut off when stopping and I wish there was an option to disable it.

Feels like a short SUV while driving. Looks like a soccer mom car.
The seats are comfortable. Power good for a 4 cyl. Wish cameras had been stock. Factory rims dull, road ware on paint hard to color match shade of white. Ceiling material cheap, seat material is good for economy crossover. Heads-up display well done.

I would buy another terrain in a second.
I have had no problems with my vehicle and I have had it for a year. The performance of my vehicle is great and I have had no issues with anything. It is very reliable and has plenty of space for kids in the back seat. I really enjoy the features that are on my vehicle; heated seats, auto start, etc.

2018 GMC terrain: quirks and cooling.
Overall it's a solid car. That being said, it feels solid. Meaning it feels heavy. Some cars (like Kia) for example feel light. Call it quality or just call it bulky, either way to me. I feel safer. The shifter being implemented in the lower dashboard take a little to get used to, but you'll get there. Other than that, I have never had an ac that blew colder than this car does. It'll freeze you out even in TX weather.

Not 100% happy with this GMC 2018 terrain Denali.
Not crazy about the seat covers in this SUV. This is a Denali. Our Chrysler we turned in had plush seats. This one does not. It drives good and performs well. The motor cuts off when we stop and comes back on when we take off. We wanted to cut that off but we were told we could not.

Great package in the terrain Denali.
The asthmatics of the vehicle are beautiful I have it in a pearl white color that is lovely the Denali trim is my favorite it is very comfortable and has all the latest features GPS lane assist cross traffic alert a nice dual sunroof the shifts are smooth and the truck picks up speed effortlessly with its turbo engine it is been a very reliable vehicle and the only things I do not like about it is the turning radius it is very short and it doesn't turn as much with its AWD suspension also the hood is very tall and sometimes makes visibility a bit more difficult.

The car has a back-up camera that shows on the large dash screen.
We bought the car in July and so far it is absolutely great. Still has the new car smell! Runs fantastic.

My passenger comfort in my terrain.
I have had no problems with our terrain except a few recalls. It is very reliable and performs well, it is fairly comfortable and some good features like warming seats, adjustable lumbar support. I do wish there were more storage areas and handles for holding onto.

Was in a wreck in it and the air bags did not deploy at 70mph, but onstar was super helpful
Love it, wish it had more cargo space, the push button start is nice, wish it had more room in the front for purses though

Good family started but not for a family bigger than 3.
I love it but honestly the interior is not that big it should be able to seat 5 but there is only space for 4 of us. This is a big downfall being that we want a larger family. Also the very back (trunk) is barely big enough for the stroller. Overall though like the comfort the interior, style and the mileage first is foremost is amazing.

This is definitely the affordable luxury car you are looking for.
There are a lot of updates. Currently the radio stays on when you turn the car off. Its roomy and rides smooth. I have had zero mechanical issues since I bought it. It's very reliable and comfortable. There are a few blind spots you have to get use to but it's a great car.

Fantastic vehicle made for families like myself that drive long distances.
I like the car. Drives well. The gas mileage is efficient and it gets me from point A to point B. My kids enjoy the flexibility and the space that the SUV provides. I like to take it on trips. I would highly recommend this make to friends and family in the future.

Back up camera and push button start no key access.
Great suv, it gets great gas mileage and it looks good. I love all the features especially the push button start and it feels extremely safe when driving, easy maneuvering between lanes perfect size and it has a backup camera so parking in reverse is super easy.

GMC terrain: superb handling all around!
Super comfortable and handles turns incredibly well. The detection system is incomparable and the blind spots are practically non existent. The comfort of the seats are actually impressive. The brakes are a bit abrupt but better abrupt than delay. Overall I would give it an 8.5 out of 10.
accountCircle Lorraine B on March 3, 2021
It's good for handling on bad roads.
I love that it is an SUV and is easy to get in and out of. Both front seats are fully adjustable, electrically. There is plenty of legroom in the back seat.

Check the outer vehicle panels to sure they are aligned before purchasing.
Multiple trips to the dealership months after purchase. Issues with multiple panels in vehicle, entire body of the car had to be realigned. New transmission put in with only 12,000 miles.

Fun to drive even though parking is kind of rough. Thanks for the back up camera or I never would of bought it
Love the way it handles. Big enough for hubby to get in. Not that bad on gas. Hate the cost of vehicle and hate to park the boat.
accountCircle Drew S on February 26, 2021
GMC Terrain overpriced for the features you get
This SUV is too overpriced for the basic features you get no power seat cloth interior no blind spot detection which is an absolute must on that vehicle because it has natural blind spots but GMC is so cheap that they didn't put the one feature that really should have been on the car they call them self professional-grade think again

Quite a reliable vehicle.
I have not run into any problems with this vehicle so far. It drives very smoothly and has been a very reliable vehicle. I have been able to travel across several states with this vehicle and did not encounter any problems driving long distances with little to no breaks. Gets good gas mileage in my opinion.

Mom car that I use to take kids to school and myself to work.
I do not have any issues with my vehicle. It is a good car. I like having more space than the car that I had before. I wish I didn't have to pay more for it, but it is ok. It gets good gas mileage and drives really well. I drive to and from work everyday about 75 miles.

The 2018 GMC Terrain; The Right Car For You!
I love my 2018 GMC Terrain. I have AWD and it really helped me out this past winter with the bad snow storms. Features that I love: easy to navigate computer system to control not only entertainment but also the system specs. The rear seat easily folds down to allow for maximum storage. Some things I don't like: It came with the 'auto-stop' feature (the car automatically turns off when you come to a complete stop) that I am not a fan of. In some other vehicles (and even the 2019 Terrain) you have the ability to turn this off, but not in the 2018 model. I would've also preferred different colored stitching/panels on the interior but I could've been pickier when shopping as well. All in all a great, reliable car!
