Alex Showalter
Feb 15, 2023

The 2020 GMC Terrain lasts around 200,000 miles with some speed sensor and door lock issues reported. At $19,987 to $33,698, it’s a decent value for a compact SUV with a more luxurious cabin than the competition.

Awesome vehicle the GMC terrain is a dream car!
I love my terrain. Drives so smooth and so comfortable. Love the remote start and the automatic trunk opener. Since I have had back and hip replacement surgery. Great mileage right size gas tank. Recommend it to for roomy seats and floor place. Great gas mileage.

2020 GMC terrain - functionality and style all in one.
I have yet to experience any problems with my vehicle. Overall performance is amazing for a 4-cylinder vehicle. The seats are comfortable for very long drives and there is plenty of space in the back seat for 3 children car seats. The trunk space is a little smaller than my previous vehicle but it is still very roomy and fit two full size strollers or just have plenty of space for luggage on road trips. The features I love the remote start, and remote open and close for the lift gate.

Want a cool mom car, get the GMC terrain Denali.
Reliable, comfortable. Great SUV, leather seats, sunroof, air conditioned seat, great radio system, navigation, tons of room. Perfect size care, Bluetooth to phone, great gas mileage, cameras everywhere, love the color, good sensors all around, it's a great car for a small family.

GMC terrain: the SUV without a gearshift.
The car has a good exterior and interior design. It is unique in that it has no gear shift. You park the car by pushing a button, and you reverse and drive by pulling buttons. At first, I thought that something might hit the controls and the car would automatically go into park, but there are safety features in place that if the car is going a certain speed park is not an option. This car has decent gas mileage, great trunk space, and has great OnStar features.

Loving the terrain, family SUV!
Only thing sometimes the screen turns off on its own. It drives very smooth. I love that it is very comfortable due to having children. The OnStar service is great and I love that I can turn on and off remotely. Other than that there are no issues with the vehicle.

A beautiful vehicle. Great safety features.
I have only driven it twice since I just got it but so far I love it. It is beautiful inside & out. Had great safety features. I just do not like that it does not have the blind spot warning and that now you have to pay for the app that gives you remote access when it used to be free.

GMC terrain is a definite winner.
I have had no problems so far. I like the size. I also like the features like I am able to lay the seats down by pulling levers in the back and not have to go to the back seats. I like that I am able to hook up my phone and use apple play to play music and use GPS. I also like the heated seats.

My vehicle is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone.
It performs very well so far, I like how it drives in the snow as it is all wheel drive. However, I have notice the transmission shifting a lot but other than that it is greats and great on gas too. If you are looking for something cheaper and love the arcadia then this is the way to go. It is has all the right looks and seats 5 comfortably.

Getting my car back fixed and fixed right!
Have a 2020 Terrain - 5 months ago bought brand new off the showroom floor/parked it for the hot summers in AZ - went to driveit with 500 miles on it - air conditioner not working. Made appt with dealer bought it from - so far have had it 5 days and either they have not bothered to look at it -- was told they are very busy - or they simply don't know what is wrong with it. Imagine my unhappiness - traded beautiful Encore for it because wanted larger vehicle - wish I had Encore back! J. Williamson Surprise, AZ

Mechanical issues
2020 GMC Terrain Denali Its very comfortable and love the car itself but have issues with it already and have only had it 2 weeks. It was new and my service engine soon light came on while on my way here to Florida went off after a few minutes, the navigation stop reading the card so isn't working, and the passenger door window is not going up as it should and has a clicking noise. I have a service appointment as soon as i return to Tennessee. Its a nice looking car but not satisfied with because of mechanical issues.

Turbo problem and dealer inability to fix
2020 SLT AWD - Really like my Terrain overall. Safety features, AWD and driver information center. Ride is good. Acceleration OK when the turbo is working. Problem is my check engine light came on 3 months in. Ten months later, not sure if it’s fixed. First service by dealer “We found no codes” Car running fine though even though engine light back on. Not driving f that much due to pandemic so I don’t rush back to the dealer.Brought it back 3 months later, diagnosis: needs a new catalytic converter which are on back order. Finally get the cat converter replaced and two days later I get a “low engine power” warning light. The turbo is not working and acceleration is slow. Dealer says turbo pressure lines leaking so they are replaced Dricing off the lot I get the same low engine power warning, the dealer replaces turbo pressure sensors. Same thing happens. Nex the dealer replaces the entire turbo. Thanks GM. I go on a road trip for the Christmas holiday to see my family at a super spreader event. 300 miles into it , another low engine power warning message, the turbo is not working. The problem code indicates “over-pressure “ and the dealer replaces another turbo pressure sensor. The car ran well even with the check engine light on until the dealer replaces the catalytic converter. The dealer says there is no connection. I call GM customer service give them my information and account of problems. GM call back saying the dealer never heard of me. Well. GM called the dealer’s other location in this state 250 miles from my dealer. I really doubt replacing sensors again will be the fix. So my rating is 5 for vehicle and 0 for these problems and dealer technical abilities - make it a 3.

The terrain is a smaller SUV but one has plenty of space to feel comfortable in.
This vehicle has no problems that I have noticed. The seats are comfortable and the interior looks very nice. There is plenty of storage space for hauling things on road trips. There is touch screen capability which makes driving more hands-free easy.

What do you do when you've bought a LEMON?
I bought the 2020 Terrian that GM had sent for the dealership use in October. The mileage on if was 2200. Five days after my purchase I heard a loud pop, like being hit by a rock sounds. Less than half mile later a loud rattling noise started from underneath the hood. I took it back to the dealership the next day and was told they could find nothing wrong. Same thing again, noise more constant; mechanic shop said they could not hear anything. Next trip they thought it might be something like an acorn had gotten into a fan motor. Ordered and replaced the fan motor. Same racket. Back to the dealership but this time we had recorded the sound they could not hear. This time they said an engineer at GM though it sounded like the left back seat headrest was rattling in its holder. Excuse me.... They took head rest out of holder and it's laying in the back floor board while cylinders are being ordered. This was almost 3 weeks ago - no call yet from dealership that parts to repair a sound that's definitely from the dashboard/motor area is here. Meanwhile, the rattling is still ongoing but keep in mind the head rest is in the floorboard so it should not be rattling, should it? While it does not rattle constantly it rattles enough. We've been recording it while we wait for parts. If the "parts" ever come this will be the 5th trip back to fix this problem. This is the worst experience I've every had with a vehicle. I had a 2013 Terrain and it was a joy to drive. This one is a LEMON that the dealership says they can't do/won't do anything about except keep dragging their heels.

GMC basic for the high price tag.
Comfort could be better for price. Heated seats should be standard. As well as mirror sensors, backing up sensor. One major problem is the safety stop, it stops if you get too close and it sends you into the steering wheel which is really more unsafe than breaking yourself.

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Terrain?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 GMC Terrain offers a premium alternative to other compact SUVs on the market with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Terrain at 4.1/5, praising the powerful upgraded engine, but doesn’t like the smaller cargo space than some other small SUVs.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2020 Terrain a 4.1/5, enjoying the upscale interior for the money, but owners don’t like the push-button gear selector.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 GMC Terrain Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 GMC Terrain include speed sensor issues, the doors not locking, along with premature brake wear. Overall, these problems are similar to other SUVs on the market, leading to average repair costs as the Terrain ages.

Speed sensor issues are the most widespread complaint from 2020 Terrain owners in the first 15,000 miles. The sensor simply fails as the vehicle gets older, and has to be replaced to make the speedometer accurate. Replacing the vehicle speed sensor costs around $200, depending on local labor rates.

The doors failing to lock have been mentioned by some Terrain owners at around 5,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by a dead battery in the key fob, which causes it to not function. There are also some software issues reported with the keyless entry system, which can be updated by a dealership.

Premature brake wear is another issue on the 2020 Terrain in the first 20,000 miles. If you use your Terrain to haul heavy items or a lot of people all the time, the brakes will tend to wear out quicker than normal. Replacing the brake pads costs around $350, while a new set of rotors is over $500.

There is one recall on the 2020 GMC Terrain, which is better than many other SUVs on the market. The recall is for missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator, which can cause the transmission to leak oil. GM will install new bolts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2020 GMC Terrain Last?

A well-maintained 2020 GMC Terrain can last around 200,000 miles, which is roughly 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than some other compact SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $525 per year.

As a used 2020 GMC Terrain reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history owners should be prepared to replace the A/C condenser for $550, brake master cylinder costing $380, along with the oil pump which costs around $500.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent with a standard 7-inch touchscreen which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Available upgrades include a more powerful Bose stereo system and a larger 8-inch touchscreen.

Safety technology is great for a compact SUV with standard driver assistance features including:

  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • GM’s Teen Driver

Optional upgraded driver safety features include:

  • Safety alert seat
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Lane change alert
  • Side blind zone alert
  • Front parking sensors
  • Parallel and perpendicular parking assist
  • Blind spot monitoring

Yes, the 2020 GMC Terrain is a good value since it offers a decent amount of luxury for the money. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $19,987 to $33,698, making it cheaper than a Subaru Crosstrek or Honda CR-V. When new, the price range was $25,000 to $39,900. Depreciation is similar to other small SUVs, losing around 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the GMC Terrain?

What Colors Does the GMC Terrain Come In?

How Comfortable Is the GMC Terrain?

The 2020 GMC Terrain has a comfortable interior, with supportive and spacious seats and a well-designed cabin which has enough room for up to five passengers. According to owners, the front seats offer good comfort and support, even on long drives, while the rear seats provide ample room for passengers.

The cabin is also noted for its quietness, with good sound insulation and minimal wind and road noise. Higher trims also offer features like heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof, adding to the overall comfort and premium feel of the vehicle.

How Much Storage Space Does the GMC Terrain Have?

The 2020 GMC Terrain is a compact SUV that offers practical and versatile cargo space for its class. Behind the rear seats, it has 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which can accommodate several large bags or several smaller items. For added convenience and versatility, the rear seats can be folded down to increase the cargo volume to 63.3 cubic feet, allowing you to carry larger items or a combination of passengers and cargo.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the GMC Terrain was launched for the 2018 model year.

2015: 4G WiFi hotspot added across the lineup.

2016: Blind spot monitoring & lane departure warning system added to SLE-2 and SLT models.

2017: Standard 18-inch alloy wheels on all models, nightfall appearance package available.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new exterior, engines, and technology.

2019: New exterior appearance package added, upgraded high-resolution rearview camera.

2020: Upgraded suspension on the Denali model, diesel engine discontinued.

2021: Turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine removed from the lineup.

How Does the GMC Terrain Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 GMC Terrain is a decent compact SUV compared to the competition since it offers more luxury, although you trade a bit of the long-term affordability for the nicer interior.

The Ford Edge is a larger SUV which is available for around $4,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Ford Edge, while the GMC Terrain offers more standard technology for the money. We recommend the Ford Edge since it’s a more practical SUV, although both offer similar reliability for the 2020 model year.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a popular competitor, which is about $2,200 more. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Hyundai Santa Fe, while the GMC Terrain offers a slightly better all-wheel drive system. We recommend the Hyundai Santa Fe since it has a much longer warranty, making it a better choice on the used market.

Great overall SUV for a small family.
The terrain is great for people who want the SUV feel. When you drop the back seats it opens up a lot and can fit a lot of cargo. Or for me I can put my large mountain bike in with no problem. Great if you only have 2 kids drive is smooth. I just don't like the way the car shuts off when paused at the light or the assisted brake if you're too close to a car it will slam on the brakes even if you're starting to break.

2020 GMC terrain is my dream car!
The car is so comfortable with the leather heated seats and heated steering wheel! The air conditioning works wonderfully too in the summer! There is a sleek wooden finish in the interior as well that makes the car feel really luxurious. The touchless entry for the trunk is so convenient too!

Favorable options on GMC terrain.
Love the computer options. Just bought car 2 weeks ago & still learning all the options. Slow take off at first then really speeds up..Not used to it. The warning vibrations in drivers seat will be helpful when I get used to what it means.

The GMC terrain is a wonderful overall SUV that is comfortable and safe.
The GMC terrain is a comfortable SUV. The safety features such as lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and automatic breaking assists with handling potential hazards while driving. Features, such as the backup camera and the skyscape sunroof, were the initial selling points of the terrain.

2020 terrain above our dreams.
I have been driving our terrain for 3 months now and love it. The steering assist is wonderful. It is getting great fuel efficiency. The ride is great. The sound system even though not top of the line sounds great. The terrain has way above expected leg and head room.

It is a lot of vehicle for not a ton of money.
I love everything about my car. The pick-up is fast the interior is great. It has heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, a huge sunroof. It drives really great. It has plenty of passenger room and plenty of storage room for hauling as well.

Great vehicle - good for lifestyle.
I like the 2020 GMC terrain because it is a sturdy vehicle, looks great and has the room I need to handle my day to day living needs. What I do not like is the passenger seat recliner lever - it is placed in an odd, not easy to get at location. This is my opinion.

Comfortable riding car with the latest features.
My terrain is such a nice smooth riding car. The trim and inside is so nice it has the latest features and I love it. The seats are really comfortable and is such a treasure to take on a trip. I picked silver for the outside and black for the inside. It does not show dirt very well.

Love it and cannot wait to keep driving it!
Only problem I have faced is the sunroof not opening correctly. You can hear the motor engaging but the roof wouldn't move. Features I enjoy are the heated seats and steering wheel. Apple play connectivity. Trunk space is perfect for a weekend of camping. I would like the backup camera to have a better light. It can be difficult to see in the dark sometimes.

TOWED AT 4 MONTHS OLD
No, my 4 month old 2020 terrain had to be towed 1 month ago because it was not getting fuel. Here we are 1 month later and dealer still has not fixed it.

2020 terrain. A great car but underpowered.
My terrain is beautiful. It has black wheels and black trim. People stop and stare. It is a beautiful car. The interior is comfortable. The infotainment system has great features and is easy to control safely. The performance is not good. The car is underpowered for it is size. It does not bother me most of the time but it would be nice if it had more oomf. Overall, great car.But spring for the bigger engine.

The safety features on it are so great when you are on the road for traveling.
Reliable and very safe to travel in. The comfort level is on the top. It is very spacious. It has heated seats and it is AWD which is amazing during seasons such as rain and snow. Push button features which give you a lot of room where your right hand goes. Plea to of trunk space even has a under storage in the bag.

Spacious, good gas mileage, affordable, good sound system, large trunk space.
This SUV is spacious, looks nice, good gas mileage, affordable, comfortable, rides super smooth, decent sized trunk, seats fold forward easily for more space, drive wonderful in snow. I have wanted an SUV for years and couldn't decide on the right one and the GMC terrain is perfect. I have had it 9 months and still runs great!

First time GMC terrain owner.
I love my terrain. It gets superb gas mileage, and it runs beautifully. The only thing I had to get used to was when the car sits like at a light, the car temporarily turns off, then it starts again. The GMC app that I downloaded is a wonderful tool. I can start or lock my car remotely through the app. I also receive emails with updated service information on my car like if the tires need air or if I need to change oil. My terrain is the first SUV I have owned. I have been able to carry large loads since the seats lie down making a very large storage area in the back. Another feature I have appreciated are the cameras. I can see all sides when I am backing out. Moreover, it is such a sharp looking car. I would recommend this car to anyone.

Safe, reliable, comfortable car.
The vehicle is extremely comfortable and is really nice to drive around in. The car is extremely reliable and has amazing handling. I also really like the features such as the sunroof and I also really like the seat warmers in the front seat. One thing that I like better than my old car is apple carplay too.

I love my 2020 GMC terrain!
I love my GMC terrain. I have the most basic package you can get, but yet it still provides a luxury experience for a decent price. I love that it comes with a snow mode, a backup camera, and lane veering notifications. The car is the perfect sized crossover and has great trunk space. You can also fold all the seats down if you need more space.

BEST MINI SUV ALL THE TOYS
Awesome Color, Smooth Lines, Precision shifting, cornering, SMOOTH LIKE A LARGER SUV, 1.5 TURBO ROCKETED US UP THE MOUNTAINS LIKE WE WERE ON A FLAT ROAD. Safety feature galore.

The GMC terrain is a fantastic vehicle.
Very comfortable and quiet ride. Adjustable leather seating. Lots of great safety features including drivers assistance, lane indicators and warnings if you are following too closely. Automatic headlights are a major benefit. Quality sound system with satellite radio. Seats easily fold down for hauling. Automatic door locks and keyless entry makes the vehicle more convenient to operate. The terrain gets great gas mileage and does not cost a fortune to fill the tank.

Pros and 2 cons for my 2020 GMC terrain.
Love the car’s features, seats are comfortable for long rides. So much room!! Good gas mileage, love the apple carplay feature. Great Wifi service. Do not like the small glove box or the blind spot on the back. Overall I am extremely satisfied with my GMC terrain.

The blacked out exterior is gorgeously done along with a roof rack!
My car has a sunroof, heated seats, self closing trunk, lane detectors, auto breaking before your reaction time, and much more. This car is the perfect size and allows a comfortable ride for everyone! The details on the outside really make it come together as it is all blacked out. I also love the roof rack that came with this model allowing me to take advantage of kayaking!
