Aug 8, 2023

The 2018 GMC Yukon lasts around 250,000 miles with some running board and A/C issues reported. At $29,550 to $64,700, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a dependable full size SUV with strong V8 engine choices.

likeFilled The Good
The handling is responsive for its size, the cabin is loaded with upscale materials and it has decent technology for its age.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The throttle response is poor with the base engine, there’s some suspension noise and the third row is slightly cramped in the standard wheelbase version.

Is the 2018 GMC Yukon a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2018 is a great year for the GMC Yukon since it pairs strong V8 engines with outstanding passenger room. Owner reviews praise the luxury features
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are upscale for a large SUV, the seats are very comfortable on long road trips, and cargo space is excellent.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread problems found on the 2018 Yukon. Avoid models from 2015 which have some electrical and transmission issues, while 20162022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – The towing performance is great from the strong V8 engines, but it’s not particularly fast since it’s a heavy boxy SUV.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2018 Yukon is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera, while optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control along with lane keep assist.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 19 MPG, giving 494 miles of range from the 26 gallon tank. Gas costs are $11 cheaper than average, at $245 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2018 GMC Yukon is a decent value if you’re in the market for a strong full-size SUV since it’s reasonably priced for a lot of passenger room.

All the bells and whistles.
Verisafe. It alerts me over everything. Steering has resistance if I change lanes without a blinker, seat vibrates if a car is too close on all sides. Parking assistance is amazing, mirrors adjust while backing out. Air conditioned front seats are a plus in the summer.

The hidden compartment behind the radio.
No problems. Luxurious comfort. TV for kids. Large seats and plenty of space in back for car seat and storage. Touch screen radio and hidden compartment behind it is great for leaving valuables in your car. Leather seats that both heat and ac. Adjustable seats perfect for all size people.

My thoughts about Yukon Denali.
The fit and finish are beautiful. The magnetic ride control, HUD, sensors for lane departure, rear entertainment center and the power third row seats are just a few of the options that sold me. I have a small family but eventually try for another child and having the room is a must.

Beautiful for living in the country love nature and mud.
Gas prices to high and the insurance is way to much for NY budget not counting the payments I would like something smaller but I enjoy the outdoors and mud and trucks so I guess you win some and you lose some any.

Safety best describes the GMC Yukon while looking good at the same time.
Great vehicle, we love it! My wife and kids were in a bad accident and the Yukon kept them safe. Never had any problems. Very reliable and just as comfortable as any vehicle I have owned. We are very happy with our Yukon.

Smooth driving and easy to maneuver
I love being up high. I like being able to see the road well. It is a smooth driving car. It also has very little road noise.

Sleek. Classy and comfortable.
We love the smoothness of the car. It's very family friendly, roomy, comfortable and all around easy to be in! DVD system makes it nice for the kids and Wi-Fi is super nice during long road trips. Beautiful look on the outside and makes you feel like a boss on the road.

Less features but costs more
I just purchased this vehicle a few months ago and it lacks several of the features from the vehicle that I traded in and it costs much more than the vehicle that I traded in.

Yukon family fit, is it for your family?
As a family of five, the third row is to small for any of our kids to fit. And my youngest two kids are only 10 and 11. Also, if we have the last row up, then there is no room behind it to fit in anything else, suitcases, groceries, etc. So when running other children that requires more planning on my part, which I do not always have time for. We are a very busy, active family, and this vehicles does not fit us.

One interesting thing is it has a camera that shows the speed on the windshield.
It is had sensor issues. The sensors in the front of the car are constantly going off even if something is not there. The DVD screen the first one close to driver seat never stays on and will lose picture of you hit a bump. And there is a skip in the alignment. When you increase speed the card does this jerking skipping.

I love how high it is and has an automatic step to let you climb in.
I have had a few technical problems with it. Bad transmission, and a huge gas guzzler. The windshield wipers do not clean clearly. It is very reliable and I do feel very safe in the car while driving. I have only had to bring it in 2 times for servicing.

I got the Denali so everything is very nice.
It is a very comfortable ride. I have not had any mechanical issues other than my air conditioner went out which I feel is way to early for a new expensive car. I like how the seats lay flat I can get a lot in the back. It is very comfortable for my children.

It is worth the extra cost to get the Denali.
This is my 2nd GMC Yukon. The 1st was a Denali and was totaled after the front axle broke in 2 when the car was about 10 years old. This is not a Denali and I regret it. I notice a big difference with the hotter power and the full time 4wd. The car drives less secure and I do not feel as safe in wet weather but in my Denali I felt confident in the car to get through anything - and it would. I recently drove a Lincoln SUV as a rental and am considering switching however if I had stayed with the Denali I probably would have never considered it.

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Yukon?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 GMC Yukon is a nice throwback to the SUVs of the 90s with an upscale cabin, and good owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the 2018 Yukon at 3.4/5, enjoying the high towing capacity from the V8 engines, but doesn’t like the loose handling.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Yukon a 4/5, praising the luxurious interior, but owners don’t like the worse fuel economy than some competitors.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 GMC Yukon Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 GMC Yukon include the electric running boards failing, the A/C system not working, along with excessive paint fade. Overall, these problems are similar to some other large SUVs, leading to average repair bills as the Yukon ages.

The electric running boards failing is the most widespread complaint from 2018 Yukon owners at around 60,000 miles. The motors that cause the running boards to extend tend to wear out as they are used every time the vehicle is locked and unlocked. Replacing the running boards costs around $1,800, depending on local labor rates, although some owners simply disconnect them and don’t use them.

The A/C system not working has also been reported on some 2018 GMC Yukon models at roughly 50,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a cracked A/C condenser which will lose all cooling capacity. Replacing the condenser fixes the problem, but costs around $1,300.

Excessive paint fade is another complaint found on the 2018 Yukon within the first 55,000 miles. Paint left in direct sunlight for a long time will start to break down and fade. The only way to fix the problem is by repainting the affected areas, at a cost of around $1,000 per panel.

There are three recalls on the 2018 GMC Yukon, which is similar to many other SUVs on the market. All of the recalls cover the brake system and include the brake software and vacuum pump. GMC will replace the vacuum pump, and update the software on models for free.

How Long Will the 2018 GMC Yukon Last?

A well-maintained 2018 GMC Yukon can last around 250,000 miles, which is only slightly shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other large SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $566 per year.

As a used 2018 GMC Yukon reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the distributor cap for $150, the ignition control module costing $300, along with the wheel hub assembly which costs $550.

accountCircle Maureen V

I have not had any problems with the 2018 GMC Yukon Denali, and thus far, the vehicle appears to be reliable.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good, offering a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a more powerful stereo system along with active noise cancellation.

Standard safety technology is okay, offering a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, along with Teen Driver mode, which sets limits on speed and volume.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Head-up display
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Low-speed automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Safety alert seat
  • Blind spot monitoring

What Colors Does the GMC Yukon Come In?

How Comfortable Is the GMC Yukon?

The 2018 GMC Yukon offers a comfortable and luxurious driving experience that can compete with many high-end SUVs on the market. The cabin is spacious and airy, with a three-row seating configuration that can accommodate up to nine people, depending on the seating arrangement chosen. The seats are designed with high-quality materials, providing ample cushioning and support, which makes long drives more enjoyable.

In the higher-end trims like the Denali, the front seats come with heating, cooling, and power-adjustable features that enhance comfort. The second-row seats have a good amount of legroom, making them comfortable for adult passengers. The third row, while suitable for children, can be a bit tighter for adults on longer trips.

The Yukon also has a smooth and quiet ride due to its solid build and sound insulation. Its suspension system does a commendable job of absorbing road imperfections, providing a composed and comfortable ride, even on rougher roads.

However, it’s worth noting that, like all vehicles, comfort can be subjective and may vary based on personal preferences and expectations. Some drivers might find the Yukon’s size a bit challenging to maneuver in tight city conditions, while others might appreciate its commanding view of the road. Overall, the 2018 GMC Yukon stands out for its comfortable interior and smooth ride quality.

How Much Storage Space Does the GMC Yukon Have?

The 2018 GMC Yukon is a spacious, full-size SUV designed with ample storage room to meet a variety of needs. When all the seats are in use, the Yukon offers a generous 15.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. This space is more than enough to accommodate small luggage, groceries, or a stroller.

The second and third-row seats fold down for more significant cargo needs. With the third row folded, cargo capacity expands to a substantial 51.7 cubic feet. This amount of space could handle larger items like bicycles, or a significant number of boxes or camping gear.

But if you need maximum storage capacity, folding down both the second and third rows reveals an impressive 94.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This large space could accommodate bulkier items, such as pieces of furniture or larger outdoor equipment. In summary, the 2018 GMC Yukon offers versatile storage solutions to fit various needs, from daily errands to transporting large items for special occasions.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the GMC Yukon was introduced for the 2015 model year.

2015: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with stronger engine output, improved fuel economy, and improved technology.

2016: More technology upgrades, IntelliLink touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay, and more safety tech improvements.

2017: Cooled seats replaced with ventilated seats, low-speed automatic braking added, and updates to the rear entertainment system.

2018: Standard 10-speed transmission added.

2019: New Graphite Edition package available on the SLT model.

2020: No changes from earlier years.

2021: Fully redesigned for the fifth generation with all-new styling, technology, and interior.

How Does the GMC Yukon Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 GMC Yukon is a very nice full size SUV offering a lot of passenger room paired with decent reliability ratings as it ages, making it a great choice for shoppers.

The Ford Explorer is another SUV which can be found for about $6,000 less. Fuel efficiency is better in the Ford Explorer since it has V6 engine choices, while the GMC Yukon offers more passenger room. We recommend the GMC Yukon since it has fewer complaints from owners, although both are decent SUV choices.

The Chevy Tahoe is another full size SUV which is about $2,500 less. Both the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe are built on the same platform, although the interior materials are nicer in the GMC Yukon. We recommend the Chevy Tahoe since it’s very close in quality to the GMC Yukon, but at a more affordable price point.

So far we have no problems. Only good things to say. I love driving it! I feel very safe. It's bigger than past vehicles so I really appreciate the park assist and camera. I appreciate the teen driver option for when my daughter starts driving. The display on the dash board is easy and convenient. I like being able to see what the posted speed limit is vs what speed I'm going. I like the options to see tire, etc performance. I love the hands free liftgate in the back, especially when shopping or packing up the vehicle for a trip. It's a great family vehicle. Especially for a family with a kid who plays sports and has lots of equipment to lug around. My daughter is very comfortable sitting in both second or third row. Lots if room for her friends. I have owned GMC vehicles for over 8 years and they tend to be the most reliable vehicles in my opinion. The safety ratings show they are also one of the safest vehicles on the road. Good family SUV that provides room and comfortability for long trips.
This SUV was purchased used. Unfortunately it has some bottom body rust as it was bought from Alaska. I do however love this SUV and the room it provides for my family! It is reliable and due to snow that comes once a year I am confident now getting my kids to and from places. I enjoy having a back up camera although at times it does not sound the alert that incoming cars or pedestrians are in sight. I do believe this is a standard model and do not expect too much. It was affordable and hope it lasts well over 10 years.

The interior is spacious and accommodates large loads and comfortably fits 7 people including my two boys that are still in car seats. It handles well and is a very smooth ride in any weather.

Very good but nothing for new drivers.
Very large but it handles very well. But definitely difficult to drive at first. The 4 wheel drive helps a lot on harsh conditions and can tow a ton. Multiple safety measures and new installments with this model that really help a lot. But once again if your not used to driving big trucks it will definitely be a challenge at first. Charging ports and electronics work great. Even a movie screen for people in the back seat. A lot of space in the back for things which helps out a lot. Acts like a pickup but with a roof. Overall a really nice car with a lot of comfort just a little too big.

A great SUV for families with many great features that help make it a great car
I love the size of the car. I have captains seats in the second row so it makes it difficult for 3 kids in carseats. I love the heating and cooling seats. I also like the drivers alerts.

The crash safety ratings are fantastic - really a safe truck to be in
I love the solid feel, the smooth ride and the styling of the vehicle overall. The vehicle is the perfect mix of sporty and luxury. The engine is huge and I LOVE the power.

Has a lot of cargo space for a big family
A great car very reliable and a lot of cargo space. Holds a lot of people and with car seats well. A great car for road trips and the truncheons space is ample. Very easy to drive and has all the bells and whistles to make it comfortable in the road.??

I love the fact that the Yukon comes with the feature for lane change assist and front crash detection. When someone stops quickly in front of you, the Yukon detects this and will alert you and hit the brakes.
The GMC Yukon is amazing as it is a 3 row seater. It has tons of features. It has lane change assist and rear seat detection. There are so many different features to list.

My family vehicle is the perfect fit
I love my Yukon. It's reliable, spacious, and functional. It's gets 22 miles to the gal highway miles and has all the amenities I need. Plus a hitch that is also hidden until needed. The fold down trunk gives even more space for carrying items. It was a great purchase for a family vehicle.

The best family car you can buy.
The Yukon is the best vehicle we have ever owned. Heated seats are a must in co, kids love the back heated seats. Bluetooth to phones and devices are a must, and we rely heavily upon this in this car. The speaker system is super high quality, the 1st car I haven't blown out the speakers on (we love our music). The seats are very comfortable, we take lots of long drives and road trips. The handling of this car is amazing, you do not feel like you are driving a huge tank of a car. The blind spot indicators are great, this car has big blind spots. And the video backup system is a must & works great, this car is a beast to backup. I have recommended this car to numerous families who have also purchased it based on my recommendations.

Perfect vehicle for both adults and kids!
Super comfortable, smooth riding. Light colored interior is easy to clean. Love all the features inside and the kids love the DVD player! Easy to use app from GMC keeps you up to date on your cars needs and helps you out if you lock your keys inside! Heated seats and steering wheel are an absolute must! You will not regret riding in luxury in a Yukon!

Great gas mileage, very comfortable and kid friendly.
The yukon denali has tons of convenience features as well as a very luxurious interior. This vehicle is very versatile for families while keeping it in the luxury vehicle category.

Pros and cons of the new Yukon. Greatest SUV on the market.
My vehicle is very spacey. I have 3 kids and all of them fit comfortably. We can transport all 3 kids with 2 friends with no problems. Performance this far he's been good. I did have a dead battery the first month but the temperature outside was below 30 for several days and it was not driven for 3 days when that happened. The kids are able to watch there iPad with the build in Wifi. The push button back seats a great new feature compared to my older Tahoe when you manually had to put them down. My only wish is that the back seat control can be up front by the driver so that you do not have to get out of the car.

Getting great service with the Yukon xl.
I get a very smooth ride. My vehicle has Wi-Fi so I really get to enjoy it on long trips. Also I purchased the xl model which came with two televisions. This vehicle is very dependable as well. The fuel efficiency could be a little better but still I consider it pretty good.

Perfect SUV for small family.
I love this car! Traded a small SUV for more room and was not disappointed. I feel safe in the large size and sitting up high allows me to see my surroundings easily. I love the safety features- blind spot indicator, collision sensors and backup camera. The cooled and heated seats are also a favorite feature that can be used year round. There were tons of add on options available when we were shopping for this vehicle.

GMC Yukon review, needs better trunk space.
Then GMC Yukon is the most comfortable car I have driven and been passenger. I love the space. The touch screen features are nice on the radio. My only complaint is the trunk space. There is minimal space with the third row up, so if you need a decent amount of trunk space, get the xl.

It's like a second home when you are traveling or just driving kids around.
When the front of the two rear tv screens is down, you cannot see out the back window. I love everything else.
