Alex Showalter
Dec 13, 2022

The 2018 Honda CR-V lasts around 250,000 miles with relatively minor engine software and battery drain issues. At $20,500 to $26,150, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a dependable compact SUV.

likeFilled The Good
Passenger room is great throughout the cabin, the steering is responsive and there’s a lot of advanced safety technology available.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is firm, the stereo system is a bit tricky to learn how to use and the base engine is weak.

Is the 2018 Honda CR-V a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2018 is a good year for the Honda CR-V since it offers advanced safety technology paired with decent reliability ratings, giving it a high overall score. Owner reviews praise the spacious cabin, efficient engines, as well as the technology.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are decent for a compact SUV, the seats are comfortable on long trips, cargo space is also larger than the competition.
  • Reliability 8/10 – Reliability ratings are good, however, there are some software issues owners should update. Avoid models from 20152016 which have transmission problems while 20172022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from both of the 4-cylinder engine options, although neither are as quick as some competitors.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2018 CR-V is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Honda Sensing is optional which includes lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, as well as automatic emergency braking.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 30 MPG, giving 420 miles of range from the 14 gallon tank. Gas costs are $70 cheaper than average at $172 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2018 Honda CR-V is slightly more expensive than other small SUVs, yet slow depreciation paired with low ownership costs makes it a good value.

Great family car both for a road trip or their first time behind the wheel.
Great gas mileage, comfortable interior with lots of space for passengers as well as storage in trunk. Good stereo system. Smooth drive with side cameras for safety when switching lanes. Comes in a variety of colors. Safe for a teen to learn how to drive as it is not too big nor too small.

CRV is better than I expected.
Like sitting higher. Backup camera very helpful. Change lane signal warning good. Comfortable driving on long trips. Love garage remote, keyless entry & open. Like that the back door opens 90 degrees making it easier to load & unload. Only drawback is I think GPS should be standard on all cars.
accountCircle Courtney Y
Blind spot sensors and eco mode.
Tire pressure needs to be checked every time the temperature drops. You can definitely tell when the car is in eco mode because the engine is slower. The sensors for blind spot are often delayed and makes for unsafe merging and changing of lanes if only relying on those sensors which you should not.
accountCircle Jennifer P
Lots of fun features and storage space!
It has a lot of zip for a smaller SUV. I love all the extra features such as remote start, automatic high beams, lane correction, heated seats and backup camera. I keep it on eco mode all the time and it gets really good gas mileage. We are able to seat 5 people fairly comfortably, and it has a lot of storage space.

The Honda CR-V: A Reliable, Basic Car for everyday needs
I like that this car is spacious, drives well, is highly reliable. I do not enjoy the fact that it's a lower price SUV as I prefer heavier cars w more technology. My car also has the most basic of technology - no GPS, no touchscreen so I wish I had more features
accountCircle Dixie C
Good car that you will have for a long time.
This SUV is super comfortable if you have one small child in a car seat however would be cramped if there was two. I haven't had any problems with the SUV. Feature wise it checked off everything. Navi, XM radio, car play. It is been an awesome purchase.

Reliable and spacious car! Fun to drive!
The car is reliable and easy to drive! It is compact but spacious at the same time which allows me to move many items at the same time. I appreciate the flexibility and space it provides for my passengers since I drive multiple students at a time. The Apple play connections makes driving safe.

I wish I never got this SUV.
Computer system is very faulty. Does not recognize cell phone when plugged in. So apps do not work consistently. Breaking system beeps when nothing is around and only driving anywhere from 10 - 50 mph. Braking system alert is not reliable. Sensors blink on and off and do not always work. Computer shuts off midway driving and you have to restart vehicle to control air, radio etc... Because screen goes black.

Crv very annoyed
More trouble than what it's worth. Expensive repairs. I have hondas before . I bought a 2018 cvr. Very, very disappointed. And honda does not care. Had to call honda america to find out there are problems they are not revealing and deny any wrong doing. I'll get the steering column fixed for $3,000 dolars and but a toyota. My husband had a toyota for years short of 90,000 miles never a problem

Phone system is awful
My new 2018 Honda CRV is comfortable and I really like a lot of the features. The phone, however, is absolutely horrible. Using Bluetooth I can hear the people I'm speaking with fine but they hear a lot of feedback and background noise that makes it impossible to carry on a conversation. Found lots of similar complaints from other owners online. Calls to the dealer on several occasions got me nowhere. Beware before buying one of these unless they come up with a fix for it. Considering going back to a Toyota.

Honda CR-V basic edition keeps safety as its primary function.
This is a basic model so there are not any extra features. This is a Honda so it is very reliable. The vehicle is not meant for luxury so the comfort level is average. I wish there were more trunk space aside from having to let down one of the back row seating. The vehicle is easy to drive, however if you are looking for something with a bit of 'get up and go' I would choose a sedan Honda. CR-V is meant for safety I believe. Airbags are in every passenger location and the seatbelts work great.

Touch Screen Randomly Goes Blank
I have a 2018 Honda CRV-Touring with 7800 miles on it. Last week the touch screen began randomly flashing the brightness button, beeping, then going completely to a blank screen. I took it to the dealership this morning and was told they were aware of the problem but did not have a fix for it. I asked how long until they figure out how to fix it and was told they did not know. My advice is to stay away from the 2018 Honda CRV.

What Do Critics Say About the Honda CR-V?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Honda CR-V offers improved safety and sharper handling with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the CR-V at 4.2/5, praising the peppy turbo engine, but doesn’t like the finicky touchscreen.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the CR-V a 4.1/5, enjoying the Honda Sensing safety software, but owners don’t like the low towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Honda CR-V Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Honda CR-V include some engine software issues, excessive battery drain, along with some stereo system glitches. Overall, these problems are similar to other compact SUVs, with lower repair bills as the CR-V ages.

Engine software issues are the most widespread complaint from 2018 Honda CR-V owners at around 10,000 miles. There’s a software update available for the CR-V which improves the engine’s performance and reliability. Most dealers will install the update for free, while some may charge around $50.

Excessive battery drain shows up on some Honda CR-V models in the first 3,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories found in the CR-V which may drain the battery while the vehicle is off. Diagnosing the battery drain costs around $150, and fixing the issue is usually under $100 as well.

Stereo system glitches have also been reported by CR-V owners at roughly 20,000 miles. There are some stereo system software updates available which can improve the reliability and stop the system from freezing. Many dealers will update the software for free, while others may charge roughly $50.

There are 2 recalls on the 2018 Honda CR-V, which is better than many other compact SUVs. The most serious recall covers the fuel pump, which can fail. Honda will replace the fuel pump on affected models for free. The second recall covers the steering system, yet it only affects 54 models, so it isn’t a widespread issue.

How Long Will the 2018 Honda CR-V Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Honda CR-V can last around 250,000 miles, which is only around 50,000 miles less than the Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are much lower than other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $251 per year.

As a used 2018 Honda CR-V reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the blower motor for $250, the voltage regulator costing $500, as well as the drive belt tensioner, which costs around $400.

accountCircle Tiffanie D

Yes this 2018 Honda is very reliable. I have had this car for over a year and there have been no issues.

accountCircle Deb A

No we do not have any problems with it but we wouldn't expect it to have any issues when it only has 16,000 miles on it!!

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2018 Honda CR-V with a standard 5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a larger 7-inch touchscreen available as an optional upgrade.

Safety technology is great for a compact SUV. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include lane keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, along with adaptive cruise control.

Is the 2018 Honda CR-V a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Honda CR-V is a good value since it offers decent reliability as it ages. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $20,500 to $26,150, making it more expensive than a Kia Soul or Mazda CX-5. When new, the price range was $24,250 to $34,150. Depreciation is better than other SUVs, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Honda CR-V was launched in 2017.

2015: New 4-cylinder engine and CVT transmission, as well as a new 7-inch touchscreen.

2016: New SE model introduced, security system added to LX model.

2017: Fully redesigned for the fifth generation with new engines, styling, and technology offered.

2018: Unchanged from the previous year.

2019: No major changes.

2021: No major changes from earlier years.

How Does the Honda CR-V Compare to the Competition?

The Honda CR-V is an excellent compact SUV offering a lot of reliability paired with good technology for the price, making it a nice choice for shoppers.

The Subaru Forester is another small SUV which costs around $1,000 less. Where the Subaru Forester stands out is with standard all-wheel drive while the Honda CR-V has a more comfortable interior. We recommend the Honda CR-V since it offers better practicality, although both are very good choices.

The Toyota RAV4 is a competitor available for roughly $1,000 more. Standard safety technology is better in the Toyota RAV4, while the Honda CR-V offers a more engaging driving experience. We recommend the Toyota RAV4 since it’s more reliable, yet both are extremely good compact SUVs worth taking a look at.

Top notch vehicle, but driver assistance features may be blocked with snow.
The vehicle drives very well and is very comfortable. I do appreciate the advanced features, such as heated seats and the driver assistance features. My only issue is that, during snowy weather, the sensors for these features can be blocked. Those alerts can be distracting, and it does not seem to take much snow to block the sensors.

Lane changing assist is standard in the touring model.
This Honda CR-V currently meets my needs. It has a turbocharged engine, comfortable for a SUV & has many safety features not available on my previous vehicles, I.E. Lane changing assist, back up camera, braking notification. The interior capacity is sufficient for my needs.

Mid size sports utility vehicle. Gas mileage of a sedan. The led display is nice.
The trunk could have the no hand option. The seats fray easily. They took away the blind spot camera... For no reason. It is a comfortable ride, the display is nice and big. It has apple play but that is inconvenient for android users. It gets good gas mileage and is just the right size for transporting medium size purchases.

I love my vehicle. It is roomy but not too big for my first SUV. I can comfortably fit a car seat and infant seat in the back and enough room in the trunk for a stroller and groceries. It is very reliable and great in the snow. I feel safe using this as my family vehicle.

It is really comfortable, as the seats are pretty good and the engine pick up is also smooth and fast. Also, the ac vents at the back help the kids cool down in hot weather, the service center is pretty good too. I haven't faced any problems in the 2 years I had it.

At the moment I haven't had many issues with the car that I can think of. It is. Solid choice for an SUV. I would recommend a Honda vehicle to someone who is either a first time buyer or recurring buyer. Honda’s hold their worth once the car is bought compared to other car manufacturers.

2018 Honda CR-V superior gas mileage.
This car gets great gas mileage, even higher that than range provided at purchase. The service schedule is very reasonable, around 7, 500 for my driving patterns. The car does beep. At times, when I am locking the car. I have heard from another owner that had the same problem and he could not find the reason. The body frame is much lighter than my last car, thus the favorable gas mileage experience. I use the gas saving mode so pick up from a stop is not great. The car is roomy and provides plenty of space for hobby equipment.

You can minimize the toll that the summer heat has on your vehicle.
A vehicle is a wheel motor vehicle used for transportation. Most definitions of cars say that they run primarily of road, seat on eight people, have four tires, and mainly transports people rather than goods. Cars came into global use during the 20th century, and developed economies depends on them.

Little CR-V is the perfect size for adventure.
My Honda is a functionally sized small SUV with great gas mileage. I have driven it on several multi day road trips and have never had an issue. The oil dilution issue that affects other owners has not been an issue for my vehicle. If oil dilution is occurring, it has not affected the performance of the vehicle.

With the Honda CR-V you get a lot of car at a reasonable price.
My Honda CR-V looks elegant with beautiful trims inside and out. It offers a smooth and safe ride with it is great suspension and safety features. It comfortably seats 5, with adjustable heated front and spacious folding rear leather seats for added trunk space. It has driver assist, safety alerts, rear view camera, navigation system, smart connectivity, a nice sunroof and terrific sound. Mine also has a remote starter for those cold winter morning when you want someone to warm your car for you. It is definitely a good value for the money.

Apple CarPlay and spacious trunk.
Very nice family car with great space in the trunk. For us apple CarPlay was important, which you get in the 2018 models onwards. Speed control, lane departure, and auto break are really nice for long road trips and work great. It is not as good as eg a tesla, but enough to reduce the exhaustion from during long trips.

Things I love about my CR-V.
I love the fact it has heated seats, which really does help in the winter time. It has a very smooth ride, with a sunroof. Everything is at my fingertips, with radio and phone controls on the steering wheel. I love that the back seats fold down, allowing for more space for groceries or my dogs to lay down.

CR-V is still relevant and a trusted vehicle.
It is reliable and comfortable, safe. Ours does not contain all the extras but has a backup camera which is helpful and we can hook up Bluetooth to the display for GPS. Overall really good value for the money, only slight disappointment is the gas mileage is a tad worse than I expected.

CR-V is an amazing SUV car.
It is a very nice car. Nice mileage and also very comfortable. Also has good acceleration. I wish that it was bit more spacious and also wish that it could handle multiple people and not feel cramped. Overall, it is a very nice car and has very nice features.

It has excellent storage.
It is a basic mid-size SUV which gets excellent gas mileage and has very little to no maintenance issues. Very good for commuting and for long trips equally. It is a normal gasoline model but my next one will be a hybrid most likely. It also has a lot of space, both for people and for objects and luggage for trips.

It's red, all wheel drive and reliable.
I love my car with hardly any issues. It is very reliable and durable. It does well in the snow and I love the auto steering assistance. My only issue is that I wish I had more storage space. I purchased this vehicle for a growing family and reliability.

Spacious, very comfortable and helps me save a lot on gas.
It is a very nice car. I save a lot on gas, is has a lot of space. I like the screen, it works perfectly with Bluetooth and it is really helpful when I am on the road and do not know where I am heading. I can just put the address and off I go. The tires are nice and strong and really it is a great car and it is economic.

The car is great but the battery is not.
There is a battery problem that many of the newer Honda cr-vs are having. Other than that the car is great, the battery just needs to be replaced more often than it should. The car itself has a smooth ride and can handle trips to places like Vermont where the roads are not as nice.

My vehicle is an eco friendly car, with new technology and spacious.
Well let begin with the features of the car. In the interior of the car in the driver's seat it has a nice features on the steering wheel like when you need to navigate on your dashboard it has these arrows to make it easy to find anything you need or want to see or listen. There is also another feature on the steering wheel that allows you to answer calls. It also has a cool feature that has voice commands, so when you to need to do something faster you can use it to call, change the radio station or show the GPS, you can do anything hands free. It has heated seats which is my favorite part about the car considering that we do take a few road trips but it does get cold where we live when it is winter. The car also has a nice feature that allows you to put the car on eco. The performance of this car is that bad but when you accelerate the car does not react as quick, but I do know it can be safe thing in case you go too fast. The comfort level in the car is good for me and my family, even such a small size as vehicle. So far I have not had any problems with the car it has been very helpful when I need it the most and it has been great on road trips as well.

Safe and secure. I love my car.
Comfortable, great for family road trips. Worth the money to upgrade to AWD and leather. It handles well and turn radius is awesome. Small engine but it is quick, turbo does cause a slight hesitation when hitting the gas. I feel safe and secure when driving. I would purchase this car again and again.
