Alex Showalter
Aug 6, 2022

The 2009 Honda Fit lasts around 300,000 miles with only some minor clear coat and A/C system issues. At $5,672 to $6,649, it’s a great choice for buyers looking for a compact hatchback.

likeFilled The Good
The steering feel is sportier than other small cars, there’s a lot of space in the cabin and ownership costs are low.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s missing stability control, the interior has a lot of hard plastic and the suspension is firm.

Is the 2009 Honda Fit a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2009 is a good year for the Fit. Owner reviews praise the dependable engine, cargo space, and responsive steering.
  • Interior quality is average compared to other compact cars with durable fabric and plastic, but the infotainment technology is basic.
  • Reliability ratings are excellent. Fit models from 20072014 are good choices with a spike in complaints in 2015.
  • Performance is below average from the relatively weak 4-cylinder engine.
  • The Fit is a very safe compact car getting a perfect 5-star rating overall in government crash tests, with the lowest score being 4-stars in the rear passenger test.
  • Fuel economy is excellent, averaging around 31 MPG combined, which will get owners about 328 miles of range out of the 10.6 gallon tank.

Fun, versatile and good for the environment; the Fit is great value for everything you can do with it.
Small enough to fit in tight spaces (parking), large enough to not feel like you're in a clown car. Super versatile in terms of seating and storage options. Fun to drive (paddle shifters) and contains the latest technology.

No problems. I bought the car used and only do routine maintenance. The only complaint is the loud road noise but thats because of how small the car is

My car is a great commuter car. It gets very good gas mileage. The car seats four and has four doors so it can still work for family trips.

The Honda fit has very excellent gas mileage, super cute design, the trunk space gets super flat when the seats are laid down. I have never had performance or reliability issues and the car runs great. It is definitely cramped for a bunch of tall people but shorter passengers are always comfortable.

No. Purely because of paint quality problems. I am ashamed to be seen in it and Honda does nothing

It does fit a lot of stuff and is good for gas.
The shocks are terrible. The steering wheel is wobbly. It does not run very fast. It does have great gas mileage which is good for driving a long ways, but it does not drive smooth so you don't want to drive it for very long.

Great to fit things in and to travel long distance.
It is very slow to start, the battery is bad, the car is bumpy and not smooth to drive.

That it gets great gas mileage and is good for commuters & students.
What I like about the 2009 Honda fit is that it is a great commuter car. It gets good gas mileage and help saves on gas. I do not like that it is so light, which can be scary when driving in the snow. It also takes forever to get up to speed.

Always take the car to get maintenance when needed.
Over all it isn't a bad car but the only complaints I have is that anytime I go over a large bump or pothole my rims get bent, my tpms always needs checked and the hatch handle does not work properly.

What Do Critics Say About the Honda Fit?

  • Consumer Reports says the Honda Fit offers more room than people  would expect, and has above-average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the 2009 Fit a 4.8/5 praising the good handling, but doesn’t like the cost for its size.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Fit 4.6/5 and enjoy the great reliability, but owners don’t like the basic interior.

What Common Problems Does the 2009 Honda Fit Have?

The most common complaints found on the 2009 Honda Fit include clear coat failures, broken A/C, and worn-out motor mounts. Overall, the problems are relatively minor compared to other compact cars from 2009, and repair costs are lower than rivals.

Clear coat failures are the most widespread problem reported by owners at around 75,000 miles. The clear coat on the paint wears out as the car is exposed to sunlight and is not properly cared for. It costs about $800 per panel to repaint the damaged areas.

Broken air conditioning systems are reported by some owners at around 65,000 miles. The A/C compressor wears out quickly in the Fit, and has to be replaced to get the system working again. A new compressor costs about $1,400 installed depending on local labor rates.

Worn-out motor mounts are another frequent issue at around 100,000 miles. The plastic in the mounts wears down over time and has to be replaced, costing about $75 per mount.

There are 11 recalls, which is more than many other cars from 2009. The most serious recall is for the driveshaft, which can corrode and increase the chance of an accident. Most of the other recalls are for the airbag inflators, which are not a concern once they’ve been replaced.

How Long Will the 2009 Honda Fit Last?

A well-maintained 2009 Honda Fit should be able to last around 300,000 miles, which is similar to rivals including the Scion xD. Regular annual maintenance costs are average compared to other compact cars, according to Repair Pal, at $362 per year.

Most 2009 Honda Fit models will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace items including the water pump for $500, the transmission interlock solenoid costing $150, and the muffler which costs $380.

accountCircle Cal S

The Honda fit is reliable. It is able to get me around. The only issues I have come across are being a tad lightweight on the highway and blowing around.

accountCircle Michael M

I have had few problems with the Honda fit over the years. A few years ago, I had a rattling sound that I was hearing when I went over bumps, which cost me about 500 to fix. Otherwise, I not have had any unexpected expenses with it.

accountCircle Alyssa H

The car is very reliable and I have never had any major issues with it. I have had to do basic things like a new battery, new tires, and regular oil changes.

accountCircle Catherine H

Very reliable in the last 8 years I have only had one minor repair. I have only had to do maintenance and tires. Drives well and fits my needs.

accountCircle Tiffany H

It is really reliable and so far it hasn't had any major problems. Just keep maintenance and oil change.

How Much Is the 2009 Honda Fit Worth?

Blue book values range from $5,672 to $6,649, making the Fit more expensive than a Mazda3 or Toyota Yaris. When new, the price range was $14,750 to $18,960. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 8% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Honda Fit?

There are two models of the Fit offered for the 2009 model year. The second generation of the Fit was introduced in 2007 and was replaced with the third generation in 2014.

What Engines Come In the Honda Fit?

The engine found in the 2009 Honda Fit is a relatively weak 1.5L 4-cylinder which makes 117 horsepower and gets up to 31 MPG combined. Performance is below average, taking 8.3 seconds to go from 0 to 60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Honda Fit Come In?

How Big Is the Honda Fit?

The 2009 Honda Fit is a compact car offered as a 4-door hatchback and similar in size to rivals including the Mazda3 and Subaru Impreza. Passenger room is above average throughout the cabin, especially for its size.

Cargo space is excellent compared to other compact cars, there’s enough space for 4-6 suitcases behind the seats, and 8-10 with the seats folded flat.

How Does the Honda Fit Compare to the Competition?

The 2009 Honda Fit is one of the best compact cars offered in 2009, offering the practicality of a small SUV with the ability to fit into parking garages in big cities.

The Honda CR-V is another competitor from Honda which costs about $2,500 more. Off-road and snow performance is better in the Honda CR-V, but the Honda Fit is much more efficient. We recommend the Honda Fit if you live in a big city, but the CR-V is better for the suburbs.

The Toyota Yaris is a rival which costs about $500 less. Interior materials are higher-quality in the Toyota Yaris, but the Honda Fit has more space for passengers and cargo. We recommend the Toyota Yaris since there are fewer complaints, but both are very dependable compact cars.

Do Owners Recommend the Honda Fit?

accountCircle Cal S

Yes. It runs very efficiently and has good storage. It handles well on the road and can go pretty far for a small gas tank.

accountCircle Michael M

Yes, the vehicle is small, but it has been reliable with few problems over the years. It also fits lots of cargo, as it is a hatchback and the seats fold down. It also connects to my iPod, which, at the time, was a top of the line feature. It is perfect for my short commute to work and zooming around town.

accountCircle Alyssa H

Yes it is very reliable and runs very well, even with 140,000 miles on it. There is plenty of room for the passengers and the trunk is a great size. I have never had any real problems with this car just some basic stuff and I fell I can get many more years out of it.

Oh yes I would buy it again, have not had any major problem and its 10 years old. So far it's the best car I have bought and would tell everyone to buy. I will buy a Honda on my next purchase.

My Honda fit with manual 5 speed, 2009
In 2014, my nephew was moving to Arizona, and decided to sell his fit. It was an 09’ model, with 84,000 miles. Because it was a manual trans, he had a hard time selling it. I bought it for $4300.00 He had done no maintenance, besides infrequent oil changes, and replacing front tires. I bought new tires for the back, replaced the plugs and serpentine belt. Flushed cooling system, and changed oil. Changed the battery. For the next 8 years, I did nothing but oil changes, and replaced the battery again, as preventive maintenance. I never had an issue with it. I did remove the bumper, and replaced headlight assemblies. There was nothing wrong with them, but they were getting cloudly, and I like to see! Since I did the work myself, I probrably spent $1000 to $1200, on everything, for the last 8 years. Pretty sure I could sell it today for 6 grand, and the last 8 years driving would have been free! Its got about 150,000 miles on the clock, still has origional clutch. Runs as good, as the day I bought it.

I love my Honda fit. It is such a nice, compact car. It gets great mpg and is very easy to drive. The turning radius is great and I never have any problems with it yet. It is also a very reliable car and has not broken down on me yet. The car is also very comfortable and fits up to 5 people. Although there is not a lot of room in the trunk, it is a great car for someone who likes cars on the smaller side.

Great vehicle except for that one thing.
It is a great vehicle. Drives like a charm. It is great on gas. Very reliable. My only real complaint is that the fan motor has an electrical problem that is quite expensive to fix and is common in the 2009 model. It is either full blast or no fan blowing at all. Honda is aware and refuses to issue a recall to fix. If that wasn't a problem, I would give the vehicle 5 stars.

Ten year old, orange Fit!
This is the first and only car I have ever owned, and after ten years it is still running like a champ! The car has stayed comfortable, and continues to be good on gas. A newer development in the last 2 years is the paint is definitely starting to need some love, but after ten years in the Florida sun it still isn't that bad. I have been hit in the car 2 times plus 1 other time it got hit in a parking lot when I was not inside, but it has kept me safe every time. I love my Honda fit! I keep up with the maintenance and it has been reliable so far. It has 115k miles on it and runs just fine. I love the way the seats fold down because it gives me flexibility in loading my car. The amount of stuff that I can load in that little car always amazes me. For a small car, it is easy to get in and out of it, the seats are not as low to the ground as one might think. It is very comfortable. The one drawback is road noise, but with all the other great features and the for the price, the road noise is only a small drawback.
