2003 Honda Odyssey Review: One of the Best Family Cars on the Road in This Price Range, but the 2004 Edition Costs About the Same and is More Reliable

Gilbert Smith
Jan 11, 2023

The 2003 Honda Odyssey is still an excellent family car twenty years later, with a DVD player in the back and enough room to host a Superbowl party. But there are a few hundred NHTSA complaints of early powertrain failure that make the minivan difficult to drive without worry.

Front angle view.
likeFilled The Good
As spacious and comfortable a car as you’re ever going to find in this price range. Reliable, powerful, and still incredibly safe all these years later.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Reports of early powertrain failure are worrying, and while the 2003 Odyssey isn’t the thirstiest gas-guzzler, it is a twenty year old minivan.

Is the 2003 Honda Odyssey a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – One of the best family cars on the market from top to bottom, but reports of early transmission failure cost it a point.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – This is as comfortable and as spacious as you’re going to get outside of a luxury RV.
  • Reliability 7/10 – The 2004 edition has everything the 2003 model has going for it, but it’s a little more likely to reach a quarter million miles.
  • Safety 8/10 – By 2003 standards it’s a 10/10, but a twenty year old minivan just isn’t going to be as safe as a new one.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – At 18/25 miles to the gallon, city/highway it’s efficient for a twenty year old minivan, but it’s a twenty year old minivan.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2003 Odyssey probably deserves a higher score for value, but those early transmission failure complaints are hard to overlook.

My vehicle is gold and very comfortable.
The performance of my vehicle is excellent, the older the odyssey, the better it works. It has seats for up to 7 people, the air conditioning is very good, I love how you can insert up to 6 CDs in the stereo so you don't have to change the CDs every time. I also love how my car has big windows to look outside.

It holds a lot in the back. The ride is smooth and the van is quiet.
It's a reliable brand, it is a good size, and it gets good gas mileage.

That it's a Honda. Honda cars are by far the best make of a car.
I bought my car from my parents who had it for almost 15 years. I love the sliding doors, it makes it easy to get in and out of parking lots. I wish that there was a little more room in the back though. It's a little squishy back there. .

It gets very good mileage.
I like the height, the GPS, and the roominess of the interior. I wish it were AWD rather than just front wheel.

It has long miles already but still running very well.
I love my car!, It has a great engine, strong car with lots of space: seats 7 people very comfortable. Truck compartment is inside the car and still do not bother people sitting in the back. I feel very safe when I travel with my family in this car. CONS: It has problem with the transmission and started key.

Great family car with occasional issues with the sliding doors.
I love driving a minivan! It is roomy and comfortable to travel in. We've had problems with the sliding doors and we've had to disassemble and replace the cables on both sides. We've also had to replace the ignition and there have been some recalls on their safety bags. But I enjoy this car for the roominess of it.

It is long, so driving it well takes practice.
I like the room in it, there is enough space and seating for my family, plus the back seat folds down for when we have to travel or haul stuff. Good gas mileage also.

Tired of the hunk of junk giving me problems.
It's always an issue with this car. . There's never not a problem. It just broke down on me today in the middle of the highway. The tired decides to pop off out of nowhere with my son in the car. We are truly bless to be okay with nothing wrong with either of us. . Just a little shaken up.

At least it runs. . . Most of the time!
Even though the van is 15 years old, I would expect better reliability from it. The interior is falling apart from what I would call less than average use. It is starting to rust and has ongoing mechanical issues. The vehicle has been recalled several times, and the gas mileage is kind of bad.
accountCircle Larry P
It is a poor quality vehicle, it will not last like it should.
It has many problems, more than it should for a vehicle it is age. The interior is falling apart and it has some quirky problems that are difficult to diagnose.

Not really a minivan fan.
I just do not like driving a van. They are too big and clumsy and there are sightline problems. It is unwieldy to park and basically too much vehicle for one person. Since my children are grown I do not need this size car anymore. And the gas mileage is terrible. It is reliable however. Just keeps going and going.
accountCircle Reese B
The car is a blue and has a sleek look. Ror the early 2000's at least.
The Honda odyssey 2003 used to be a good car when we first got it, but it has broken down slowly over the years and barely functions. The a/c is nearly broken, the engine is constantly making noises, the mileage is worse than good.
accountCircle Kayla M
Do not go to far in it or you will need to put gas in it.
I like that I can fit my family of six in it comfortably. I really hate how much gas it uses it makes it hard to go places.
accountCircle Michael S
The air conditioning is the worst part, do not expect to be comfortable in the summer.
The honda odyssey from 2003 is an ok car if it was new, but the thing is 15 years old now and the problems just keep coming. If it's not the AC, it's the engine, if it's not the fuel economy, it's the radio. I would most definitely not recommend such an old car with as many problems as mine.
accountCircle Shelly F
It's easy to drive and a great family car, but I would choose a different years model.
I love the van's exterior and size. I love Honda. The electric doors seem to have problems often. The cup holders in the front are terrible. They do not adequately hold 80% of the water bottles or cups I use. Very frustrating!

What Do Critics Say About the 2003 Honda Odyssey?

Consumer Reports note that while the overall design of the Odyssey may have felt dated by 2003, the minivan still provided an excellent value with zippy acceleration, a comfortable ride, and a smooth, strong powertrain.

Kelley Blue Book users give the minivan an 85% recommendation, praising the spacious interior and low maintenance costs, but stating that it’s not the most fuel-efficient vehicle on the road, and early transmission failure isn’t uncommon.

Edmunds were impressed by the Odyssey’s crash test scores, massive interior, powerful V6, and generous entertainment features. Some interior materials felt a bit cheap, though, and, depending on your local market, it may be a bit overpriced due to strong demand.

What Common Problems Does the 2003 Honda Odyssey Have?

There are 933 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and more than half of those, 533, are for the powertrain. What we’re seeing is difficulty shifting, loss of power, and jerking, all basically boiling down to transmission failure before 150,000 miles.

Airbags are a major concern for Odyssey drivers with 133 complaints on file, with some drivers reporting as late as 2022 that they’re still on replacement part waiting lists for one of the twelve airbag recalls issued from 2013 to 2019.

Electrical issues take third with 81 complaints on file, with some of them for relatively minor issues like faulty windows, but quite a few being registered for the car failing to start when you turn the key. There was an ignition recall in 2012 to address potential rollaway, but the issues seem to be more extensive than Honda or the NHTSA realized.

Honda’s are known to be very reliable with few major mechanical issues, but the 2013 Honda Odyssey, while hardly a lemon, does have some worrying issues under the hood, with 15 recalls on file and two airbag investigations still open.

How Long Will the 2003 Honda Odyssey Last?

The Odyssey generally has a life expectancy of 200,000 to 300,000 miles but the 2003 model seems to be something of an outlier with more than a few reports of transmissions going out at around 150,000 miles. A 2003 Odyssey that’s been well-kept might make it to a quarter million, but why risk it when you could buy a 2004 Odyssey?

According to RepairPal, you should expect to spend around $447 a year maintaining an older Honda Odyssey. The most expensive common repair is a CV joint replacement starting at around $1,425.

accountCircle Athena A

Yes it is super reliable and it has minor problems like it needs steering wheel fluid but it has never had any major problems

accountCircle Chris C

Yes it is very reliable and doesn't have any current problems. It starts everyday, the air conditioner works very well and the engine is smooth running

accountCircle Linda V

It is mostly reliable. There have been times where the AC broke, the window wouldn't roll back up, and the engine wouldn't start, but they were all fixable.

accountCircle Christine H

It has been very reliable. Today, I have experienced some electrical problems. Hopefully, they are not the end of this vehicle.

accountCircle Judy F

The only problems it had was that it needed a new or rebuilt transmission twice so far, but hopefully it won't need any more transmission repair for the rest of the time I own it. The paint is also chipping off.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good for a 2003 model. This is a family car, after all, so entry levels start out with a cassette player and four speakers, and higher-end models get a DVD player in the backseat.

Safety tech is excellent, as well. Four wheel anti-lock brakes, occupant sensing airbags, traction control and childproof door locks all come standard. We’ve made a lot of advancements since then, but for a 2003 minivan this is as good as it gets.

Is the 2003 Honda Odyssey a Good Value?

With fair market prices on an LX standing at around $3,465, and that’s with just over 150,000 miles on the odometer, the 2003 Honda Odyssey is a very good value. However, because of the potential for early breakdown and the marginal price disparity, it might be a good idea to spend another five hundred for the 2004 edition.

What are the Different Models of the 2003 Honda Odyssey?

The 2003 Honda Odyssey was offered in just three trim levels, from the base LX to the high-end EX-L.

The entry-level LX features:

  • Manual air conditioning with front and rear controls
  • Radio/cassette player with four speakers
  • Anti-lock brakes and traction control
  • Cloth seating
  • Power locks for doors and tailgate
  • Power windows Front bucket seats
  • Cruise control

With the mid-range EX you’re adding:

  • Keyfob and remote keyless entry
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Driver lumbar support
  • CD player with six speakers

The top-of-the-line EX-L adds:

  • Leather seat trim
  • Heated seats for driver and front passenger

What Engines Come In the 2003 Honda Odyssey?

  • The 2003 Honda Odyssey comes packed with a 3.5L V6 engine delivering 240 horsepower and 242 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 5-speed electronic transmission and configured in front wheel drive. Minivans aren’t exactly built for towing, but you can pull up to 3,500 pounds with the 2003 Odyssey, so you won’t have any issue bringing small trailers with you.

What Colors Does the 2003 Honda Odyssey Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2003 Honda Odyssey?

The 2003 Honda Odyssey is about as comfortable as it gets outside of the luxury car market. A true living room on wheels with seating for seven and a DVD player in the back, the rear seats are wide enough that the average passenger could almost lay flat across them.

There are only seven suspension complaints on file with the NHTSA, which is a remarkably low number after twenty years of service. Don’t skip the test drive, but expect the suspension to still be as smooth now as it was in 2003.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2003 Honda Odyssey Have?

The 2003 Honda Odyssey probably has more space than you’ll ever need. With all the seats up you’ve got 38.1 cubic feet of storage, and with the seats down you’ve got 146.1 cubic feet. We’re not just kidding when we say that, if you took the wheels off, you could just about fit a Fiat 500 back there. It’s actually a few inches wider on the inside than the Fiat is on the outside.

As for cabin space, you’ve got enough pockets and cup holders and slots store everything your family likes to bring on the road, and if you don’t, you’ve got enough room left over for a storage trunk on the floor.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The 2003 Honda Odyssey was the second to last model year for the 2nd Generation of the vehicle, launched for 1999 and retiring with the 2004 model.

1999: The most noticeable change to the second gen Odyssey was the size, with the minivan much larger than the first gen. Honda pioneered the second sliding door as a standard minivan feature with the 1999 model. Back then, minivans charged extra for that.

2000: For 2000 the Honda Odyssey was one of the first minivans to offer a navigational system as a built-in feature.

2001: This would be the last year for the 4-speed automatic transmission, owing to a bad bearing that could seriously affect longevity.

2002: Improvements under the hood brought the Odyssey up from 210 horsepower to 240 with no loss of fuel economy.

2003: No big changes for 2003, but they added an intermittent rear window wiper and an auto up/down window for the driver.

2004: Another uneventful year. By this time Honda was gearing up for the launch of the third gen, so improving the second gen was low priority.

How Does the 2003 Honda Odyssey Compare to the Competition?

The 2003 Toyota Sienna is comparable in many ways to the Odyssey. It typically lists around $500 to $1,000 higher in the Blue Book, and the Odyssey is about an inch longer. Fuel economy is comparable, but the Odyssey is about thirty horses stronger than the Sienna’s 210 hp.

Honda outshines Dodge in the minivan department for 2003, providing way more convenience and comfort than the Caravan, and 50 horses more muscle. There’s a lot to like about a Dodge Caravan, but Honda takes the prize for this model year.

The Honda Odyssey is probably the best minivan of the 2003 model year, but it’s hard to get over those powertrain complaints. Rate of incidence may be pretty low, with Honda selling over 150,000 of these and only 533 complaints being registered. But you could spend an extra $500 on a 2004 Odyssey and not even have to worry about it.

Yes it has taken me everywhere and hasn't broken down, a few minor problems but compared to any other cars I've had this one has not let me down

accountCircle Patricia C

Absolutely. The car has been relatively maintenance free. It has 268,000 miles on it and other than tires, brakes, and other preventive maintenance items it has given me no problems

accountCircle Dawn G

Yes, I have been using it since 2003. It has been 16 years and it is still in good working condition.

accountCircle Stacey C

It has been a great, reliable vehicle. It has really not had any major mechanical problems. Mostly cosmetic issues due to its age.

accountCircle Amber S

Yes it’s amazing and very versatile vehicle. If we want more trunk space for large items we just fold the back row of seats down. We can also move the second row captains chairs over to make room down the middle. The vehicle is still running very well

Mechanical problems
Definitely not maintenance free. We got close to 150k miles out of it in 17 years of ownership so it did its job. Needed new tranny at under 15k miles. New front suspension at about 100k miles. By the time we traded it in, engine leaked oil from multiple locations. Dealer quote to address them all was over $6k. We took good care of the van. It wasn’t the best value considering the problems we had. It was an incredibly comfortable vehicle though. Had the best long trips in that thing with family of 4.

It's really nice, the only thing is the manual that comes with it don't match the car. But other than that it's awesome. The seats in the middle can slide in or apart. There is a lot of space in the back for all those camping trips or just trips to the store. I would say give this van a try. You won't be sorry

In this vehicle one of the automatic doors tends to get stuck a lot. It will open but will not close so we cannot use that door. This is however, a relatively old car. The rest of the car is pretty good. I do not have much else that is frustrating about the car.

. A very comfortable ride along with the peace of mind of a reliable vehicle.
Our 2003 Honda odyssey has been the most extremely reliable family car. Family vacations twice a year. Only one major repair. The car needs a new transmission. Able to get a really good deal on a used one. It was not a situation that warranted buying an entirely new vehicle. We are still using this vehicle just as we did when it was new. It may not be as pretty as it was when new, but I highly recommend the Honda odyssey minivans to anyone looking for a great reliable family car.

Usually my family comes and visit specially from Jamaica during the summer and you know we going a lot of trips to Orlando or Key West and plus also is great for my spiritual family at church to carry them when we go preaching or studying or two events or cleanups.
My vehicle is a minivan it can hold up to 7 people. My minivan it can play DVDs movies in the car and has lots of space and lots of room. But I don't really like it because I'm a single mom and you know it feels too big it feels too much and only have one child. Plus I'm 24 what do I need a minivan for I only got it because my mom convinced me to get it because we go on vacation a lot with the whole entire family and it's just in case we don't have to take two cars. I feel so weird driving around with such a big and plus it's like 15 years old so yeah

Under 200, 000 miles and this is the 3rd transmission that been in the vehicle.
Bought it used with 160. 000. I thought Honda was a good and reliable car. Replaced the ignition key system at 500$, replaced the transmission with a rebuild one 2250$. Honda sells new transmission for 5000$ and it comes with no warranty! Replaced the rotors and timing belt at 840$. The engine runs good and does not leak or eat any oil so far. I read that transmission problems are very commons on the Odyssey. If I had known that before I would have purchased something else plus it gives you no more than 17 mpg on the highway.

My Honda Odyssey runs good and comfortably fit my four kids, two nieces and myself. There is plenty of room for groceries in the back, even hooks on the back of the back seat to hang bags. With lots of compartments for storage. The only problem i have had with it is once my son turned on and left on a light in the back and the battery died. This van has given me absolutely no problems at all. It runs and drives like a dream even though it has almost 300,000 miles now. The seats are heated and very well padded. Nice for long trips with plenty of room to haul anything you need including people.

The best minivan made for families
Reliable and long lasting also comfortable and most of all convenient if you have children. Smooth ride and easy to maintain.

It gets me from one place to another.
The only thing I dislike about it are the doors. Sometimes it gets jammed when I'm going somewhere at a certain time and I can be late because I'm trying to close the door.

Amazing family van for a great price. Will last a while.
This van is amazing if you have a family, it lasts long and the engine is great. It gets me from point A to B. I would recommend this vehicle to any new family. It has plenty of room for food and cargo. Far as having any car this van has been the best to me for so many reasons.

It drives like a car, has a good turning radius and gets good gas mileage.
I like that it drives like a car and is comfortable. It gets good gas mileage on the highway and the gas tank is large, so I don't have to stop as often for gas. It's very roomy inside, which is nice.

Reliability of Honda Odyssey.
We've owned our Odyssey for 8 years now and have had very little trouble with it. We change the oil regularly and have done routine things like put new tires on it but other than that it has been an extremely reliable vehicle. We struggle some with rust on the body because of where we live.

It has 250,000 miles and still very reliable.
I enjoy the space it has for family. I hate the paint started chipping already. I love how dependable Honda vehicles are if you keep up with maintenance.
