Alex Showalter
Sep 27, 2023

The 2019 Hyundai Kona lasts around 200,000 miles with some average check engine light and transmission software issues reported. At $17,250 to $27,990, it’s a decent value for a small SUV that’s still fun to drive on winding roads.

likeFilled The Good
The stereo system is easy to use, steering and handling are very responsive and it has excellent safety features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s less cargo space than some other small SUVs, the suspension is bumpy on rough roads and there’s some hard plastic in the cabin.

Love the Kona. Perfect for both road trips and running errands around town!
I love it. So easy to drive. I love the sport mode. This car is the perfect size for road trips too. It is more like a compact SUV. It is small but feels more roomy on the inside than a car. The only thing I wish was different is that there is no trunk button on the inside of the car or on the key. You have to manually open and shut the trunk every time, but the key does have an unlock and lock button for the trunk.

Great mid-sized vehicle!
Great trunk space, good mileage, great in-between car and SUV vehicle, so if you want something bigger than a sedan aren't ready for a svu this is it. Color options are a big plus. Decent price point for what you get. Can get heated seats. Sunroof. And remote start capabilities.

Highly recommend the 2019 Hyundai Kona!
I think it is such an attractive car. The look of it, the way it drives, and all the features it has within it. Bluetooth, great sound system, touchscreen which connect my phone onto it and feed so reliable. The gas mileage and the way the car drives is unbelievable. This is the only car I have been looking to buy and I am super thrilled about my purchase.

Perfect small car for those who prefer no crazy tech.
I really love this car. I have never been a fan of large cars so if you love smaller cars this one's for you! It is super comfortable and drives really smooth. I got just a base model with extra adding and that is what I love most about it. It is not a push to start car you have to use a key to turn it on which is what I love most about it. I had a lot of trouble with my previous cars that was a push to start.

Compact car with all the features.
My car is a versatile crossover with a compact size. It has the feel of a small car, yet has the safety of all-wheel drive. The vehicle includes all the safety features you could want, including lane departure assist. It does not have huge cargo, space but fits perfectly into any parking spot.

2019 Kona review- pros and cons.
The Kona has a really smooth ride and I enjoy the sunroof and apple play capabilities that come with my model. There is a lot of space in the interior for a car of its kind. The car also gets great gas mileage. The only negative is how small the trunk is.

Vehicle has fold-down rear seats.
Handles very well around bends / turns; all wheel drive system handles deep snow well. Drive modes available are normal / sport; vehicle features clutchless shifter module for manual shifting if desired. Radio / infotainment system can at times freeze or restart; potentially requiring battery disconnect to remedy. Vehicle averages between 35 - 50 mph on highways, depending on driving habits; tire condition & season.

Fun, fast and compact. A dream for road trips.
I have had the most fun driving my Kona around. It will probably be the cutest car I ever own, the sunset orange being the first feature to draw me in. The sun roof makes road trips great and the amount of safety features gives a lot of comfort. With lane assistance, a rear camera, sensors in front of the car and on the sides. It has sports mode for those quick lane changes. Gas and mileage are fantastic. I would say the only downside is the lack of space being someone who came from a full sized SUV.

My new car leaves me stranded
Way too many times my car won't start the day I bought it after signing the papers they needed to jump started while it was in the show Room. Since then they have put into batteries and I keep having the same issues my car won't start. They can't find the problem so they don't fix it they just replaced the battery. It gets terrible gas mileage and the cooling fan will stay on sometimes 30 minutes after the car shut off and locked up. The headlights point down and it's really hard to see at night. Sometimes the doors don't unlock. At times I get a glitch in my dashboard. This car has been nothing but headaches and it is not reliable and it cost me $38000

Safety problem and very poor service.
No. The front door windows rubber casing does Not touch the glass. After any rain I need to use a squeegee to clear the windows. Highly dangerous to pull out of driveway. Fred Beans Dealership said there is nothing they can do.

The pros and cons of a Hyundai Kona.
The vehicle is too small. Common drinks do not fit in the cup holders. There is practically no console space. The seats do fold down, however they do not lay flat. I recommend getting a Honda CR-V instead. The apple CarPlay is nice, however it will not let you Bluetooth a different phone than the one that is plugged in. It does have lane-departure warning, but not blind spot help. It has collision warning, lane assist, and a back up camera. The backup camera is really nice on this model.
accountCircle Victoria B
Hyundai Kona can transform by a push of a button activating sport mode.
The 2019 Kona 20k miles into its life span had to have an engine replaced and a new starter. Both completely covered by the warranty. The Kona threw a rod which caused the new engine replacement. Pros for this Hyundai Kona is the large touch screen and high quality backing out camera and safety features.

Nothing but problems
I have had nothing but issues with my brand new 2019 Kona Limited. First some horrible mildew smell coming from the vents that I had 'fixed 3 times' and after looking up noticed there are quite a few with this issue. Then just a month later I started getting battery discharge from outside source warning when starting my car after it sat overnight. I do not and have not had anything plugged into my car and the dealership cannot figure out the problem so I looked it up, seems a lot of people have the same issue as well. I'm pretty upset and I feel like I purchased a defective car. It is brand new. Just now hit 6000 miles. I've also noticed that the shifting is super sluggish and seems to have gotten worse lately. I bought the car because it was comfortable and had good gas mileage. I overlooked the very small trunk space for its comfort. This car was absolutely not worth it and I'd get rid of it if I could.
accountCircle Amanda R
Small problems but overall good car.
Tire pressure problems often. The ac takes a long time to work on even just 75 degree days. The drive is okay but the car idles pretty loud when it is starting or at lights/stop signs. Finally, the headlights work but when turning the blinker on you will lose the headlights. You lose visibility on the side of your blinker with can be dangerous if someone is running at night and you are trying to turn into the dark. Luckily the breaks are great.
accountCircle Elena S
The car is really great on gas.
The car is good on gas. But it is too small. No trunk space and the in lane assist never works correctly. If you do not start your car everyday, it sputters and acts like a car made in the 80's. There is no leg room in the back, it would not be good on long trips. Only positive is the gas mileage.
accountCircle Mirian S
Pretty on the outside, looks very modern.
Car is ok for short trips, not the most comfortable for long rides. The back seat area is a little small. The engine does not provide a lot of power especially while driving up through the mountains. Overall, it is an ok car for driving around the city.

What Do Critics Say About the Hyundai Kona?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Hyundai Kona is playful and inexpensive making it an appealing subcompact SUV, with good owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the 2019 Kona at 4.2/5, enjoying the quick turbocharged engine, but doesn’t like the slow gear changes while accelerating.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Kona a 4.3/5, praising the fun driving experience for a compact SUV, but owners don’t like the limited rear seat legroom.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Hyundai Kona Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Hyundai Kona include check engine lights, delayed gear changes, along with some issues with the stereo system. Overall, these problems are similar to some other small SUVs on the market, leading to reasonable repair costs. The ten year, 100,000 mile warranty also helps in some cases.

Check engine lights are the most widespread complaint from 2019 Kona owners within the first 25,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a sensor issue, but there are a lot of sources for the light. You will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to diagnose the issue. Once you know the source then fixing the problem costs $50 to $500.

Delayed gear changes have also been reported by some 2019 Hyundai Kona owners at around 5,000 miles. There are some software updates available for the transmission control module which improves its performance. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while some charge around $50 for labor.

Issues with the stereo system show up on some Kona models at around 1,000 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo which makes it more reliable. Many dealerships will update the software for free as part of normal servicing, while others charge around $50.

There is only one recall on the 2019 Hyundai Kona, although it’s more serious than the competition from the same year. The recall covers the piston rings, which have been improperly heat treated. Hyundai will install a piston ring noise sensing system on affected models, and replace the engine for free if it detects any problems.

How Long Will the 2019 Hyundai Kona Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Hyundai Kona can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than some competitors based on data provided by Repair Pal, at $315 per year.

As a used 2019 Kona reaches around 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report owners should be prepared to replace the liftgate support strut for $125, tie rods costing $200, along with the A/C condenser which costs around $700.

What Colors Does the Hyundai Kona Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Hyundai Kona?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona is widely regarded for its comfortable and refined interior, especially given its position as a compact SUV in the market. Firstly, the front seats provide commendable support, making them suitable for both short trips around the city and longer drives. They are designed with ergonomics in mind, providing a pleasant seating experience for a broad range of body types. The rear seats, while cozier than the front, offer decent legroom and headroom for passengers, though taller individuals might want a bit more space on longer journeys.

Ride quality in the Kona is admirable, thanks to its well-tuned suspension that effectively absorbs most road imperfections, guaranteeing a smooth ride even on bumpy roads. The cabin is also fairly insulated, which means road and wind noise are kept to a minimum, further enhancing the comfort level during drives. Furthermore, the Kona’s climate control system works efficiently, making sure the cabin remains at a pleasant temperature.

The layout of the dashboard and controls is intuitive, meaning drivers can easily adjust settings without much distraction. The standard infotainment system, with its clear and responsive touchscreen, adds to overall comfort by providing entertainment and essential information at one’s fingertips. The 2019 Hyundai Kona offers a mix of comfort and convenience that many drivers and passengers appreciate.

How Much Storage Space Does the Hyundai Kona Have?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona offers a versatile storage space tailored to fit the needs of everyday drivers and travelers alike. Regarding cargo capacity, the Kona provides about 19.2 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. This area can comfortably accommodate items like a stroller, a week’s worth of groceries, or a couple of medium-sized suitcases. When more space is needed, the rear seats can be folded down, expanding the cargo area to about 45.8 cubic feet. This larger space can handle larger items such as a bicycle or camping equipment, making the Kona suitable for weekend getaways.

Additionally, the cabin of the Kona boasts numerous small storage spaces designed to make the driving experience more convenient. These include door pockets, a reasonably sized glovebox, center console storage, and cup holders. There’s also a small storage tray in front of the shifter which is handy for small items like keys or a smartphone. These thoughtful inclusions make sure that both drivers and passengers have their essentials within easy reach.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Hyundai Kona came out for the 2018 model year as a new compact SUV.

2018: First model year for the Hyundai Kona, which was introduced as a new small SUV with unique styling.

2019: Minor shuffling of standard features and more standard safety technology on all models.

2020: The Kona Ultimate model now features adaptive cruise control.

2021: Night Edition model introduced with black exterior accents.

How Does the Hyundai Kona Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona is a nice small SUV, offering a lot of good safety technology and low ownership costs compared to the competition.

The Hyundai Tucson is another small SUV from Hyundai which is available for about $2,000 more. Interior materials are a bit more luxurious in the Hyundai Tucson, while the Hyundai Kona feels sportier to drive. We recommend the Hyundai Kona since there are fewer issues reported as it ages.

The Honda CR-V is a competitor which can be found for about $3,500 more. Long-term reliability ratings are better in the Honda CR-V, while the Hyundai Kona offers a sportier driving experience. We recommend the Honda CR-V, although it’s worth test driving both to see which you prefer.

I just purchaseda used car & it happenes to be a Kona. I choose the make& model because of what id read about reliability, fuel efficiency, & features. It has ~45k miles on it but I think that given the industry average of 15k per year-I’m not too far off the mark. I’m taking it in to the dealership to attend to a recall notice & hope things go my way. I hope I made the right decision buying this 2019,Hyundai Kona. For me, it’s a good looking vehicle with a luxurious feel

Very small, easy electronic features, generally reliable.
Very small, and essentially only got it because it is the only car that will fit in my very tiny one car garage (with any other vehicle, I was unable to close the garage door). I also feel like it does not have the best engine/transition in the long term without more constant vehicle checks (I’d previously only driven German-engineered vehicles). What I do like, however, it how easy all of the Bluetooth/navigation systems are. They’re very straight forward. It works for me in my circumstances, but miss having a sturdier vehicle.

The six months I owned my Kona I have had no issues with it. The cold weather starting and I have had an alert that my tire pressure is low in one tire, so that is a helpful notification. I would recommend the turbo engine, as there is not a lot of peep accelerating. I like the fold down seats and I can store my bike in the back.

Easy to drive and is a small car without feeling too small. But the cupholders are in an awkward spot (I constantly bump my drink with my elbow), and when driving on the freeway it sounds like a window or door is not fully closed. Also, it is hard to hear people in the backseat talking to you in the front.

Car radio reception needs to be improved as it is terrible unless you have a strong signal from the station you are trying to get, overall it has been no other issues, mileage is ok as is the power because you can switch drive modes to sport for more power.
accountCircle Parcival L on March 22, 2021
Nice try but needs refinement.
The car accelerates well however the transmission is inconsistent or there is turbo lag. I do not always feel confident when I accelerate. The car also has quirks that make ownership experience less pleasing. For instance when changing the radio stations the volume varies with each one instead of staying the same. It all varies when I switch to my iPhone. There are only 5 preset radio stations. I wish there were more. I also wish there was a remote start that did not involve the automakers app. I have tried several times to remote start from the app while returning from a flight but it never starts.

It has a lane keeping system, rear camera, blind spot detection, prevents accidents by stopping the car if you do not break in time for the car ahead, etc. It also has CarPlay music capabilities and SiriusXM. The back seats fold down for more room but it is not too big like an SUV.

Awesome iron man Hyundai Kona positive review.
No issues so far, love the interior color and design and the outer trim. Lots of extras that make it stand out. Drives very easy and is a gas saver. Bright headlights and backup lights that help you see at night. Awesome GPS and heads up display and drivers assist make it super easy to drive and navigate.

Small, yet comfortable car that has everything you need!
The Kona is a great car! It is a smooth ride, great on gas and safe. It has everything you need in a car. The trunk is can actually hold a good amount and you have the apple CarPlay which is great GPS and connecting your own music. Seats are very comfortable and even though it is a smaller car, there is a lot of space inside.

Kona review at a glance,.
Electrical problems, v radio does not turn on sometimes. Sun told opens by itself, Bluetooth does not connect. Heated seats are good. Backup camera works well. I like the new blue color that they made them in. Engine runs well and the car runs well just wish there want the electrical problem.

Kia kina is for someone that can drive a Kia.
Do not have heated seats. I cannot adjust the seat to my height because I am very short. I need to adjust the mirror so I can get a good view without adjusting. My seat to far up. I need to use a pillow to help me reach the gas pedal. There is not much gas power when I step on the gas pedal.

The Kona is cute, comfy and safe!
My car gets great gas mileage, always over 30 mpg. It is a compact SUV but is comfortable and roomy on the inside. The safety and tech features are amazing and easier to use. The brake and gas pedals are responsive. Plus my Kona is super cute! I love the color and interior. I feel safe and know I look good in the Kona.

It's a very good color and I like it a lot.
It is pretty good, it has not issues. The mileage is very good for what you buy. There is ample amounts of space in the car. It's good for someone going on road trips or someone that is moving in to someplace. It is a very comfortable drive I have taken several long trips and the car is very good.

Convenient and reliable, the Hyundai Kona is a great option as a primary vehicle.
I really enjoy my car! The blue link feature is cool which allows me to start my car which is especially helpful in the winter. I also really enjoy using my apple carplay and hands free talk and text! I live in the mountains and my only wish is that it did better on steeper hills and in the rain/snow. If it were AWD it would be better.

Safe, surprising, and reliable.
I have only had my vehicle for a few months but I love it I have not had any issues yet. Plus it is not an overwhelming SUV and it is super safe for my 3 year old. I also love the that Kona se comes with a normal mode and a sports mode if you want to have some fun on the highway.

10/10 recommend purchasing a Hyundai Kona.
The performance of my car is great for someone who drives leisurely, along with for work. The car is great on gas and drives very smoothly. This car is great for someone on a budget but wants to buy their first car. The size makes you feel safe on the road all the while not feel like you are driving an SUV.

It is super easy to maneuver, especially backing up and the turn radius is great.
Total reliability. Great gas mileage. Love all the tech features and that my iPhone can do so much with the system. My only gripe is that it is just a tad too small. I wish the front passenger seat was a little more roomy. And the back seat is crammed with 4 adults.

Reliable commuter car for everyday use.
The Hyundai Kona is a great every day car. It gets great gas mileage, it is comfortable, and is extremely reliable. It comfortably seats 4 adults but there is the standard middle seat in the back. The only slight downside is that the windows do not have auto up/down (except the drivers side front window).

Why everyone should buy a Hyundai.
Buying a Hyundai brand vehicle is by far one of the best investments one could make. I have had this car for 2+ years and have not had any problems with it at all. It is a well made car that is of the highest quality. The endless amount of safety features are my favorite part. The safety features like lane keep assist, blind spot checker, are why I am confident in driving this car every single day. If I ever buy another car, it will 100% be another Hyundai brand vehicle.

Hyundai, you continue to impress me
LOVE. MY. KONA. Honestly this car is amazing. Seriously love my car. Super smooth, extremely comfortable and just an overall amazing car. The brake sensor is a great feature and the lane Assist. Apple carplay is also a really neat feature. Definitely recommend.

Safety problem and very poor service.
No. The front door windows rubber casing does Not touch the glass. After any rain I need to use a squeegee to clear the windows. Highly dangerous to pull out of driveway. Fred Beans Dealership said there is nothing they can do.

Great compact SUV. The lane assist is very useful.
This car is reliable have not had any problems at all. We love driving it. We have packed a lot of things in the back cargo area. It is a comfortable car. We have driven from Texas to Nebraska and back with a dog kennel and our luggage and it was still quite comfortable.

The most beautiful Kona ever!
I love my car!! It has the most beautiful coloring and is the most amazing partial off road vehicle. I'drives like a dream and this vehicle has such amazing gas mileage. (and I drive a lot) I have never had a single issue with this car and I recommend it to every single person that asks me about it. I have enough room to have multiple kids and still feel beyond roomy. The seat warmers heat up so fast and the backup camera is amazing.

The Kona is a compact, modern build of the Tucson.
The Kona offers a very smooth ride, with even the base model like mine having great amenities such as nearly silent power windows, Bluetooth, multiple charging ports, and plenty of legroom. This car leaves little to be desired, whether you're an avid camper, sportsman, or just for general errands.

An excellent vehicle for gas mileage and safety.
I really enjoy the comfort of the seats, it works especially well for my petite frame. In addition, the gas mileage is between 35 and 40 miles to the gallon for mostly highway driving. We are pleased with the Kona, after researching safely reviews, we believed that it would be the best fit for our family and it has been.

Kona pros outweigh cons!!
Tires are skippy in the rain, and the trunk is not automatic (not helpful when moving), accelerates well, provides enough storage and comfort for all passengers. Goes through gas fast though. I love the apple CarPlay option. Was leasing but I might end up keeping it!
accountCircle Alicia M on December 4, 2020
It has a sleek look and is good on gas.
It is compact, yet it has enough room to fit 4-5 people comfortably. I feel very safe driving the vehicle and I love that I can connect my phone and have my navigation, music, text message, and siri available through apple carplay. There is enough trunk space for groceries, which is a huge plus!

Cute, fun, fast little car.
Love the car, small enough that you park it anywhere but still has lots of room. Great on gas you can fill up for about 25 and run all week. Comes with a back up camera which is really helpful. Equipped with sport mode which is fun to learn how to use. Overall a great car.

Comfortable safe affordable and fun!
This is the most reliable comfortable car I have ever owned. It handles beautifully in all conditions and many times it is driver assist feature has reacted faster than I could. I love everything about this car. Everyone who gets in it falls in love with it.
