2020 Hyundai Palisade Review: Unreliable Year For The Popular Midsize SUV

Alex Showalter
Dec 1, 2023

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade lasts around 150,000 miles with some serious engine and software issues. At $25,275 to $42,998, it’s a bad value since you’ll wind up spending a ton of money to keep it running as it ages due to mechanical issues.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is smooth on rough roads, it has the latest safety technology and the passenger room is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s less reliable than other midsize SUVs, there are some cheap buttons throughout the cabin and it’s not as efficient as some competitors.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Palisade a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2020 is a bad year for the Hyundai Palisade since it has a lot of mechanical issues, making it one to avoid. Owner reviews complain about road noise, a lot of breakdowns, along with some electrical issues.

Hyundai palisade delivers what it promises.
I am still loving that new car smell! Due to all the safety features our car insurance payment was lowered. Lane assist is very helpful. It will even nudge you over if a car is drifting into your lane. Blind spot detection is great. It is like another set of eyes. There's a feature where your side mirrors tilt down when you are backing up. So far that is my favorite. I am not a fan of keyless cars which this is and it takes some getting used to.

Comfortable and safe ride.
Haven't driven it very much but it drives very nice and comfortably. Fits everyone in my extended family. Safety features are the most modern and gives a feeling of security. It rides fairly high up so gives a good view of traffic. Dealership was very hands on and helpful.

My palisade praises- why I love my palisade.
I searched for an SUV from march until December. I thought I was going to get the telluride after all of my research and test drives, but then I saw the palisade- at night. I wondered what it was and sped up to it. I was very surprised at how beautiful it was. The next day I test drove the palisade- sel model. Fell in love... But I knew I would want the limited. I went with my gut and looked for the silver and got a great deal. It is a great SUV. It is a smooth ride, comfortable, beautiful, unique, great price, no issues, I love it.

Family sized SUV that is comfortable.
This is luxury at an affordable price. We have 4 kids and my wife and I all fit comfortably. Also a reliable vehicle and the limited trim is awesome. We truly love this SUV, especially for our big family. The third seat fits adults comfortably, not just kids.

Best family vehicle for the best price.
The features on the vehicle is perfect for a family! There are 5 USB ports, so much room for our family of 4 with so much trunk space. Great touch screen and car apple play. The cruise control and all the sensors are a great addition. It is a extremely safe and comfortable vehicle.

Practically drives itself!
I love the safety features. The car seems to almost drive itself. The lane assist and smart cruise control are very nice. The ride is very smooth. The car has a sporty look for an SUV. The third row seat gives you valuable passenger space if needed. I use the apple carplay feature a lot, utilizing my GPS, music or podcasts. Gas mileage is not as good as I'd like but it is respectable.

Road noise horrible
I have had my palisade since July 2019. The first 3 months were great. However, it started to sound like a window was cracked open but no window was open. I took it to two dealerships and was told they repaired and the noise was 75% better and there was nothing else todo. The noise is not better!! When you accelerate to speeds of 55 or greater it sounds like an air leak in my ear. Then the service manager said these “issues” are expected on a new model from the manufacturer. He went on to say it’s because of the size of the mirrors. He also said it was because I have a panoramic sun roof. I do not have a panoramic sun roof. I had a panoramic sunroof on my santefe but no window noise! This is my 3rd and last Hyuandi

Would not recommend yet- too many issues that need to be resolved
The cabin room and initial perception of luxury have been overshadowed by early surfacing construction and electronic issues. No, I would not recommend a Hyundai Palisade until the manufacturer fixes the major bugs in the vehicle. We are experiencing issues with our A/C system, second row seat squeaking & randomly coming unlocked from locked leg position (permitting seat to slide dangerously along track), leather finish defect / wearing off without misuse or improper cleaning, increasing cabin noise due to poor seal construction, and noisy engine / valve sounds. Many of these issues are mentioned in the Palisade Forum. Ours is not the only vehicle that has issues. So far, not impressed with so many issues surfacing before the first 7000 mile oil change- fear how this vehicle will hold up and if major computer issues will surface.

Hyundai palisade features and downsides.
Gas mileage is horrible. Wastes gas so fast. The second row split seats only have one option to sit. Tires are good. A/c and heat are good. Third row is kind of small but still comfortable. Trunk is small but not a big issue. CarPlay is very good. Music doesn't go too loud.

What Do Critics Say About the Hyundai Palisade?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Hyundai Palisade is a very functional family vehicle with a well-designed interior, but it only gets average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Hyundai Palisade at 4.1/5, enjoying the relatively strong V6 engine, but doesn’t like the cheap buttons on the dash.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Palisade a 4.2/5, praising the long list of standard features, but owners don’t like the bold styling of the front grille.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Hyundai Palisade Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Hyundai Palisade include excessive oil consumption, stereo system software issues, and broken windshields. Overall, the problems are worse than many other midsize SUVs on the market from the same year, leading to higher repair bills.

Excessive oil consumption is the most serious complaint from 2020 Palisade owners, showing up at around 20,000 miles. In some cases, oil consumption is just part of the normal engine operation, but in others it’s a sign of serious problems. Gaskets are common failure points in the engine, allowing oil to be burnt. Rebuilding the engine can cost over $2,500.

Stereo system software issues have also been reported by some Palisade owners within the first 5,000 miles. The stereo system freezes up, and has to be reset. There are software updates available for the stereo, which improves reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $50.

Broken windshields are another widespread problem with the 2020 Palisade. There were production runs of glass, which were very susceptible to breaking. Replacing the windshield costs around $850, depending on local labor rates, but often it’s covered by insurance.

There are three recalls on the 2020 Hyundai Palisade, which is similar to other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the tow hitch wiring harness, which may catch fire while it’s parked. Hyundai will replace the harness on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the air bags and windshield wipers.

How Long Will the 2020 Hyundai Palisade Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Hyundai Palisade can last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as some competitors like the Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $585 per year.

As a used 2020 Palisade reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the washer fluid reservoir for $225, suspension shocks for $1,000, and the heater core, which costs around $1,350.

accountCircle Jennifer B

It is exceptionally reliable and easy to navigate. And I have not experienced any problems as of yet.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is very good, and includes an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen along with a more powerful stereo.

Standard safety technology is great, and has:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Driver attention monitor
  • Lane follow assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot camera
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Safe exit assist
  • Front parking sensors
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Highway drive assist
  • Head-up display

Is the 2020 Hyundai Palisade a Good Value?

No, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade is not a good value since it has more mechanical problems than other years. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $25,275 to $42,998, making it more than a Nissan Pathfinder or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $31,975 to $46,825. Depreciation is similar to other SUVs, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Hyundai Palisade?

The engine in the 2020 Palisade is a 3.8-liter V6, which delivers a robust 291 horsepower. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth and responsive gear shifts. The combined fuel economy for this engine is rated at 22 miles per gallon, balancing power and efficiency. In terms of performance, the Palisade can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 7.4 seconds, which is quite respectable for a vehicle of its size and class. This combination of power, efficiency, and acceleration makes the 2020 Palisade a well-rounded choice for those seeking a capable and reliable three-row SUV.

What Colors Does the Hyundai Palisade Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Hyundai Palisade?

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is renowned for its comfort, making it an excellent choice for families and long-distance travelers. The interior of the Palisade is designed with both space and comfort in mind. It offers seating for up to eight passengers, with the option for second-row captain’s chairs reducing capacity to seven but enhancing individual comfort. The seats are well-cushioned and supportive, suitable for long journeys, with ample legroom in all three rows. This is particularly noteworthy in the third row, which is spacious enough to accommodate adults comfortably – a rarity in the three-row SUV segment.

In terms of ride quality, the Palisade excels with its smooth and refined driving experience. The suspension is tuned to absorb road imperfections, effectively, providing a tranquil ride even on rough surfaces. The cabin is well-insulated from outside noise, further enhancing the sense of tranquility inside the vehicle.

The climate control system in the Palisade is another highlight, offering multi-zone settings that allow passengers in each row to adjust the temperature to their liking. Higher trims of the Palisade include additional luxury features such as heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and premium materials like Nappa leather, which add to the overall sense of comfort and luxury.

How Much Storage Space Does the Hyundai Palisade Have?

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade offers an impressive amount of storage space, making it a practical choice for families and those requiring ample room for their cargo. With all seats in use, the Palisade provides about 18 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. This space is enough to comfortably fit items such as a couple of medium-sized suitcases or a week’s worth of groceries for a family. For larger cargo needs, the third-row seats can be folded down, expanding the cargo area to 45.8 cubic feet. This expanded space can easily accommodate bulkier items like a bicycle, several large suitcases, or a full complement of camping gear for weekend getaways.

For those times when maximum cargo space is needed, folding down both the second and third rows opens up a cavernous 86.4 cubic feet of room. This vast space can handle larger items like furniture or a stack of flat-pack boxes, making it ideal for moving day or big shopping trips.

Beyond the primary cargo area, the Palisade also includes numerous small interior storage spaces. These include a sizable underfloor storage compartment in the rear, perfect for stowing smaller items out of sight, and various nooks and crannies throughout the cabin. Door pockets, a generous center console, and seatback pockets offer additional convenient storage for personal items, water bottles, and travel essentials, guaranteeing that both passengers and their belongings are well-accommodated.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The Hyundai Palisade was introduced as a new midsize SUV for the 2020 model year.

2020: All-new three-row SUV offered by Hyundai with more room and some advanced technology features.

2021: New flagship Calligraphy model introduced, and restructured options packages.

2022: Standard blind spot monitoring on the entry-level SE model.

2023: Updated front and rear bumpers, new instrument panel, and the XRT model was introduced.

How Does the Hyundai Palisade Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is a bad midsize SUV since it has more complaints than newer model years, making it the one that buyers should avoid.

The Kia Telluride is another midsize SUV available in the same price range. Both the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are built on the same platform, but the Palisade has a better interior. We recommend avoiding both for the 2020 model year since they have the same mechanical issues.

The Toyota Highlander is a popular SUV which costs about $3,500 more. Long-term reliability ratings are better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Hyundai Palisade offers a more luxurious cabin. We recommend the Toyota Highlander because it will last much longer, making it a better option on the used market.

Great family vehicle! Easy to drive. Great for road trips with 4 or less people.
I'll start with the bad. The automatic engine shut off can be a pain at times. The engine shuts off when you come to a stop, regardless of how long. Even just pulling into the garage. Remembering to activate the disable button helps. There is also a perimeter alarm. It comes in handy for some situations, but if it's activated when the car is parked and shut down, if anyone walks near the car, it goes off. Did I mention the horn is pretty loud? It will get your attention. It is also not so great for traveling with more than 4 people with luggage. For an extended trip, putting storage on the roof rack would be necessary. And now for the good. This is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven or rode in. It is a great size that you feel safe, but not too large. It is really good on gas and has a pretty nice maintenance package. USB ports in the seat backs, a cordless phone charger in the front seat center console, lane assist, collision avoidance and a back up camera are a great help. Now if Hyundai could put that into a full size quad cab pick up, I’d be all over it!

Hyundai palisade for families.
Had a recall for sensor, it was an easy fix. Very reliable; has features above and beyond what is needed. Most comfortable ride you can find, very family friendly. Sunroofs are nice for getting airflow and keep the kids entertained in the back. Built in sunscreens on windows is the most family friendly feature. All back seats can lay down individually.

The truck is awesome. Hyundai has come a long way with their vehicles.
The Hyundai truck is awesome. It has the top of the line features. It has crash prevention warnings. If you are coming to close to a car it will warn you and also put on the emergency brakes for you. It also has the features of changing lane warnings. It also has features if you leave a child on the truck the vehicle will set an alarm off with the car running or when the vehicle is turned off. Only of the things I dislike about the truck is if I take the key and leave the car running I am unable to lock the vehicle. It is a great vehicle to have.

Would recommend to all family and friends.
It can be a little loud with wind when going over 50 mph but overall very comfortable, large vehicle with enough space for family or friends and lots of cargo. It has a luxury feel without the luxury price tag. The warranty that comes with Hyundai is another amazing part.

The palisade has the most space in its class. Hyundai could have marketed this vehicle under the genesis line as a premium SUV. The lane assist feature is incredibly accurate and keeps the car safe from drifting. By comparison to other vehicles knots class the palisade I believe to be a better and less expensive than its competitors.

Amazing vehicle, but can you have too many safety features?
Amazing for a family, very spacious, great gas mileage, a lot of safety features. The biggest downfall in my opinion is that there are so many safety features that it can be overwhelming sometimes. It beeps a lot and can be scary at times; this is especially true when going in reverse or just trying to turn at a stop light. It beeps if there is anything large next to the vehicle.

My 2020 Hyundai palisade has been an excellent choice. I have owned it for 7 months and so far it has been my best vehicle purchase to date. It has excellent features and has been a joy to own. Hyundai palisade cruise control has distance awareness problems.
I do not like the distance blocker when the cruise is set. It will slow you down too far away from the vehicle in front of you. When you change lanes, it can still catch the edge/corner of the vehicle and slow you down. Otherwise, it is a great vehicle. Quite, accelerates quickly. Great gas mileage.

I absolutely love my car, it is very comfortable. It is great for large families. My husband is in the military so we need a good size SUV for traveling and this SUV does the job! The inside is so nice I am surprised it is under 37k for this type of SUV. Most other SUVs this nice go around 60k!

Perfect family car, safety at its finest.
The button gearbox takes some getting used to but I love it. It is extremely comfortable and love the heated seats. It is perfect for my family of 5 and there’s room to grow. The body and interior of the car makes you feel like you are driving a high end vehicle. We love our family car and would’ve have chosen a different car.

Cruise control and self drive.
It is got many advanced features, including Cruise control and self drive, and I had not yet an issue with it. It is got three rows of seats, compatible with apple CarPlay, automatic brakes which get triggered when we are close to an accident and yeah that is pretty much it.

Awesome large size SUV loaded with tech!
The palisade is super roomy and with the captains chairs in back, has room for 7 comfortably. The gas mileage is awesome for such a large vehicle as well. Sound system is amazing with 12 speakers throughout the vehicle. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a large SUV.

So many features -this car has so many bells and whistles, couldn't be better.
I love this vehicle. This replaced an older Chevy traverse. This vehicle seats 7 people and all seats are conformable. The safety features are great. I have a new driver and the lane assist has been a real asset with helping him learn how to drive. The only real disadvantage is the trunk space, it is a bit small for a vehicle that holds 7 people. We cannot fit luggage comfortably for that many people.

Comfort
Love our 2020 Palisade Limited. Among its extraordinary attributes are its comfort, utility, beauty, convenience, manners, energy and freshness. Every seat is a special place. Now, over 12,000 miles in, this vehicle still delights.

2020 palisade se offers great safety features.
I love that even the base model comes with so many great features. My favorites are the apple car play, Bluetooth capabilities, and 5 USB charging ports. The favorite safety features are the rear camera, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The vehicle gets decent gas mileage for an SUV. I average about 28 mpg. In my opinion, the cons the base model are that the driver seat cannot be adjusted electronically, the back hatch cannot be opened from inside the vehicle, and there is no blind spot detection. My favorite 'overlooked' feature is the two compartment storage in the center console with the optional cover.

Very pleased with this vehicle so far.
Very pleased with this vehicle. Chosen for safety features and seating package-2nd row captains chairs- does not disappoint! Pretty sure this SUV could almost drive itself! Only features not available were front camera and heated steering. AWD has been a blessing through this winter.

Best mid sized vehicle on the road.
My palisade was one of the first in the state and the first in Hood County. I read and studied every detail before release and pre ordered the car. It met all my expectations and excellent most two of my friends have purchased since I bought and are extremely happy. Power comfort and options are right on. Would do it again without hesitations.

Comfortable and roomie.
Very nice, smooth ride. All the bells and whistles. Heated seats are wonderful in Minnesota winter's. Cameras are clear and wide. The push button shift will be different but it is a cool feature. I like all of the rear controls and the two sunroofs are pretty cool too.

Loving my Hyundai palisade so far.
I love how comfortable my vehicle is and also has been reliable so far. It drives very smoothly and gets good gas mileage. I am very satisfied with the performance of it so far. I have only had it for three months but have not found any issues. I love the safety features which are super reliable. The blind-spot monitor works well and also the lane assist monitor. The collision function works well and will even brake for you if you get too close.

I like the fact I have 8 seats so each kid of mine can grab a friend to go.
I have had a couple of sensors that needed fixed or replaced. The technicians though have been great and very helpful. Overall it gets good gas mileage and is smooth riding. The vehicle is spacious enough for my three kids. I think a little more trunk / hatch storage would be great though.

A good bargain that gives you good quality and an able vehicle.
It is a very good looking vehicle I love the lights really makes it stand out from the rest of SUVs.Acceptable off road performance good power and many different driving modes. Lots of room for passengers and groceries the only complaint is a mystery wind noise that no one can find even dealership.

Very nice vehicle, like the handling and comfort.
Very comfort, lots of power, luxury seating up to 7 persons, front and rear air, power seats, power folding rear seating, automatic rear lift gate, rear hitch for towing, different levels of drive and comfort, memory positions for seats. Have not had any problems. Sales people and maintenance people have been very helpful with questions.

Perfect for small families!!
Over all I really love it! It is very spacious with 2 kids and could definitely work with a 3rd! Has tons of great safety features and is very comfortable. I wish the sel version came with a power liftgate that would be my only complaint. Over all I would highly recommend to anyone with a small family!

Palisade-comfort meets luxury without the price tag.
The Hyundai palisade has been a wonderful family car. This SUV meets luxury and comfort. The size of the car is perfect for anyone needing more room for their family. The heated leather seats make for a welcoming ride on trips and in the cold. I am very satisfied with this car and would recommend this to anyone looking to purchase a new vehicle.

2020 palisade a vehicle built for comfort and luxury!
I am in love with the 2020 palisade! It offers a comfortable seat and a lot of wonderful options for a comfortable ride. It gets really good gas mileage! It offers phenomenal electronic features and a top of the line sound system. The capital one chat is in the second row are a comfortable ride for passengers as well as the third row bench seat. It sits high enough off the floor for a comfortable ride. The bench seat in the back folds down for a spacious hauling option. The outside of the vehicle looks like a top of the line luxury model for half the price tag!
