2010 Hyundai Sonata Review: Among The Best Years For The Comfortable Midsize Sedan

Alex Showalter
Jun 30, 2022

The 2010 Sonata lasts around 250,000 miles with only some door handles and paint issues. At $5,787 to $8,835, it’s a good value for a midsize sedan with an upscale cabin.

likeFilled The Good
Interior materials are high quality, the technology is good for the age and there’s a lot of passenger room.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The transmission shifts hard between gears, the exterior styling is bland and the suspension is very soft.

Is the 2010 Hyundai Sonata a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2010 is a good year for the Sonata. Owner reviews praise the low maintenance costs, efficient engines, and high quality interior.
  • Reliability ratings are above average. Sonata models from 2005-2010 are all good with a spike in mechanical problems on the 2011 model.
  • Performance is okay from the 4-cylinder, but the V6 is more exciting to drive.
  • The 2010 Sonata is a very safe car, getting a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is good, at up to 25 MPG combined.

Hyundai sonata 2010 is a great reusable vehicle for all drivers.
Comfortable drive and great gas mileage for the price paid. Great comfort for any and all drivers and has been without problems for me. Useful for family and single drivers and very reliable for work commute. Gas mileage is great, speakers are wonderful, chairs are very easy to clean.

The paint on this car is in very good condition: no scratches at all!
My car is a Hyundai, sonata! It is gray in color. It is good on gas and handles very well. The leather seat are in good condition, considering the age of the car! The trunk is very spacious, it also has a spare tire almost like new! I have taken very good of this car and it is in good condition and is very reliable! I also have records of what maintenance that has been done to this car!

I have never changed my spark plugs.
My vehicle has been very reliable. The blower motor and alternator recently had to be replaced, but that is all of the major expenses. Cosmetically there have been some problems, though. Two of the door handles have come off. There is a problem rolling down the front driver window. The driver visor is also broken. Other than that it is a great car.

I like my vehicle because it get good gas mileage and don't have to spend a lot of money in repairs

Honda Sonata can be the old reliable!
No issues really. We haven't had to take it to the shop once! We bought it used with tons of miles and we love it still! The sun roof is great for those warm summer days with nothing to do. She runs like a reliable dream. You will not regret buying your very own Hyundai Sonata!

At least one door handle will fall off pretty soon and that's just life with a 2010 sonata
Handles are flimsy and fell off easily. Everybody else I know who has a sonata have the same problems with their handles. I often see cars like mine on the roads or in parking lots always missing at least one handle. I don't understand why these door handles are made to fall apart so easily. Otherwise I love the car

How great my car. Efficiently perfect for everyday.
I love my car, it is gas efficient, I haven't had many issues with the car. Just regular maintenance issues. The car has been a huge asset to my family. Comfortable on short road trips. My car is a quality car that provides everything my family and I need. I have had my car 4 years and counting. I do not plan on trading her in anytime soon.

The sonata is really space inside but mechanically might be a disaster.
It is an ok car to rely on from point a to point b but it is gotten older taken a lot of cosmetic damage and I believe the gears are starting to go out! I would recommend this car for a first car for someone it is great on gas mileage but may not hold up to the test of time.

My Red and Long Lasting Sonata
I purchased my car from a private seller. It already had 100k miles on it, but still ran pretty nice. There is almost 180k on it and it is very obvious the transmission is very close to dying on me. The gas meter also isn't accurate. It would break down on me on parkways when I thought I had enough gas to go home. Also, I have to slowly put gas in the car otherwise it will spew out. I clearly need a new car.
accountCircle Megan S
Hyundai so-not as great as you'd think-a.
I bought my Hyundai Sonata second hand when it was a year old. It had one prior owner (a rental company), and only had 40k miles when I got it. Within the seven years I have had it the blower motor has broken, the door panel motor gave out and had to be replaced, the sunroof broke twice, the sunshade plastic snapped and needed to be replaced, and the entire dashboard started peeling up like crackle paint. It is the most cheaply made car I have ever owned and I wish I'd never bought it. I have had four other cars and not a single one has given me half the trouble of this one.
accountCircle Christin F
Great seats, the rest is cheap.
Less than 69,000 miles and had to replace the transmission. The only really nice thing about this car is the seats, they are quite comfortable. The center console is cramped. For the most part it is a cheap car that does not get great gas mileage. I'd never purchase another.
accountCircle Sara H
No air vents in the back seat!
The body of the car sounds cheaply made. When you close the door it sounds hollow and thin. Our USB drive stopped working several years ago. We 've had to replace the starter. Also the exterior paint is peeling in several places, such as the roof. One of the most frustrating things about this car are no air vents in the back seat of the car. So it can be really uncomfortable for back seat passengers in the cold winter or hot summer. It takes forever for the back seat passengers to warm up or cool off. Front seat passengers have to point the vents up and toward the back just to try to get the air flow to the back seat. The seats are not very comfortable for long rides. I do like the fact that it has Bluetooth and you can connect your phone and make/receive calls through it.
accountCircle Jaxon K
Very reliable, gets you where you need to go, and was a very great first car.
The sonata is very reliable, has under 187k on the engine, and drives very smooth. I have never had a problem with the sonata that was a 'life-ender' for the car. It always wants to keep on going. The car is not a brand-new, fresh off the lot type of car. It has some wear-and-tear from the life that it has lived. The car also is pretty powerful for being a four cylinder.
accountCircle Sam F
Older model, but a reliable vehicle.
I like my car because it is reliable, but it is 10 years old so it is getting to the end of its life span. The worst part of the car is it is gutless when going up hills and trying to gain speed fast. If there is a big incline expect to go only 50 mph.
accountCircle Chris N
My 2010 Hyundai Sonata has been a fairly decent car going on nearly a decade now. At close to 120,000 miles, it is still running strong, though the repairs have started to get costly. I haven't had a single instance of the car outright failing, but several things have had to been replaced, especially in the last two years. When I trade this one in, I don't think that I will stick with the brand.
Door handles. Granted, I haven't had a problem since after the manufacturer warranty ran out, but on cold, damp mornings, I have pulled off three door handles. Three.

What Do Critics Say About the Sonata?

  • Consumer Reports says the Sonata offers a pleasant ride, but owner satisfaction scores are lower than average.
  • Edmunds gives the Sonata a 4.5/5 liking the nice interior, but disliking the bland styling.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Sonata 4.6/5 and enjoy the roominess, but don’t like that it’s not sporty.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Hyundai Sonata Have?

The most common problems found on the 2010 Sonata include broken door handles, peeling paint, and worn-out starter motors.

Door handles falling off are the most common problems showing up at around 80,000 miles. The exterior door handle breaks where it attaches to the car, and costs about $200 to replace.

Peeling paint is another frequent issue reported by owners in the first 100,000 miles. Paint that’s improperly cared for will start to chip and peel. Repainting the affected areas costs about $1,000 per panel.

Broken starter motors show up on some Sonatas at roughly 85,000 miles. The starter motor simply wears out as it ages, and replacing the entire assembly costs $400.

There are 2 recalls, covering the stop lamp switch and a suspension crossmember which can rust and increases the risk of an accident if it breaks.

How Long Will the 2010 Hyundai Sonata Last?

The 2010 Hyundai Sonata should be able to last over 250,000 miles, similar to other midsize sedans like the Mazda6. Regular annual maintenance costs are close to other sedans as well, at $446 per year, according to data from Repair Pal.

Most 2010 Sonatas will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace the radiator for $400, the engine front gasket costing $500, and the strut bearings which cost $200.

Very reliable for me and my family. Have no complaints here. Haven't had no problems that couldn't be fixed.

accountCircle Sarah T

It is a very reliable car. I have never had any problems with it and I would trust it enough to drive across the country in it.

accountCircle Dawn K

It has always been reliable whenever I have driven it and has not had any major problems so far and hopefully never will.

accountCircle Julia W

This vehicle is reliable. I have had a series of issues with the car. I am the only driver of the car and am a gentle user driving about 10 miles per day. For longer trips I actually rent cars. In my Hyundai The sun visors have broken, windows work erratically, alarm broken. Also the interior fabrics are of low quality-stains easily and ripped. IN Addition I have a sensor on the dash that no one can figure out how to shut off. Last but not least, all of my door handles have broken. Yes, all of them.

accountCircle Maggie C

All Hyundais generally have one electrical problem during the first year. It is normally a small problem and fixed by the dealer quickly with no other problems at all.

accountCircle Maria G

I would say it’s a reliable car to buy. I bought the car two years ago and have not had any problem at all. It also have a great gas mileage so it’s a plus

accountCircle Deborah W

Very reliable car. I've never had any major or minor problems. Just typical maintenance issues: oil changes, battery, and tires.

accountCircle Linda R

Never. As I stated previously, all one needs to do is change the oil and rotate tires on a regular basis, and the car pretty much takes care of itself.

How Much Is the 2010 Hyundai Sonata Worth?

What are the Different Models of the Sonata?

There are three models of the Sonata available. The infotainment system was last updated in 2008, and there’s a full redesign for the sedan coming in 2011.

GLS is the entry-level model and has:

  • An available upgrade is the powerful 3.3L V6, which makes 249 horsepower and gets up to 22 MPG combined. Performance is good, taking 7.1 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Sonata Come In?

How Big Is the Sonata?

The 2010 Sonata is a midsize sedan, similar in size to the Toyota Camry and Subaru Legacy. Passenger room is great throughout the cabin, and adults easily fit in the backseats with plenty of legroom.

How Does the Sonata Compare to the Competition?

The Honda Accord is a popular competitor costing $1,000 more. Performance and driving feel are better in the Accord, but the Sonata is more luxurious for the money. We recommend the Sonata for 2010 since it’s more reliable, but the competition is closer in other years.

The Hyundai Elantra is another rival costing about $700 less. Ownership costs are lower on the Elantra, but the Sonata has more room and better technology. We recommend going with the Sonata since it offers more room and technology in the same price range.

Do Owners Recommend the Hyundai Sonata?

Yes very good and durable. Many options. Big for a family. Great for long distances. Easy to fix. Cheap to fix. Not bad to get gas.

accountCircle Sarah T

Yes it is. It is very reliable and gets me everywhere I need to be. I have had it for about a year now and no sensors have came on.

I have had it for almost 10 years and it runs very well and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good car.

accountCircle Kristin O

As a long time owner of this vehicle, I have a vote of no confidence for this automobile. The engine has been fine, however, the fixtures interior exterior have had a myriad of issues.

accountCircle Brittany S

I have found that all the Hyundai's are a good buy because you get a lot for the money The Sonata is in my opinion the best of them although others will argue that the genesis is. The Genesis just cost too much.

accountCircle Elise L

Yes it is a good vehicle with great features. I bought it used and I have it for two years now with no problem at all.

accountCircle April H

Excellent vehicle. No problems with the car just typical maintenance: every 3000 old change, battery, tires.

accountCircle Melissa M

Yes. It is very reliable with little maintenance required. If I change the oil on a regular basis and rotate tires at the same time then that is the limit of my operating costs, minus fuel.

Door handles continue to break.
My vehicle is very comfortable to maneuver in. I love the look of my car and receive many compliments from people. The roof of the car is hard to keep clean which offsets the beauty of the main part of the vehicle. It is most reliable and is now close to 90,000 miles. I continue to take it on long trips. On a negative note; the door handles have broken three times. Hyundai has known about this problem and refuses to take responsibility.

Reliable with over 215k miles.
I had to replace the transmission early on within the first 2 years, after 10 years, 215k miles, it is still going strong. Very comfortable and reliable. Performs well in the snow with front wheel drive. Sound system is great for me. IPod connectivity or satellite radio and all electronics still work. Very happy with this purchase.

No real problems. Just not very exciting. Boring color and wish it had apple CarPlay. Reliable though. The ac does not always work, sometimes I need to keep the setting low or else it makes a weird noise. Seat heaters are nice though. Generally a good car.

4 cylinder se 2010 Hyundai sonata.
My vehicle needs a lot of parts that need to be upgraded. Smooth riding car and excellent on gas. One main problem is that the starter needs to be replaced on it. The paint on the car also needs to be touched up because it is chipped. Seats also need to be replaced.

Inside, it is sophisticated, attractive space loaded and plenty of passenger room.
Hyundai sonata is a really good way to get attention while driving a family sedan. Its dramatic styling includes exaggerated proportions, a prominent grille, and a quirky design cue featuring a spear of bright trim that flows along the front fenders and into the headlights to create what designers call a 'lighting signature.'.

Great car - very few issues with it.
This car gets great gas mileage. My previous vehicle was a hybrid, and my sonata gets about the same mileage. I can fill up my tank for about $30 which is great. The car drives great, and has decent power to it. I am a short person (5 ft) and I can easily see over the wheel and dash which is sometimes a problem for me with sedan style cars. The only problems I have are that it didn't come with an aux cable input, the Bluetooth is unable to be set up for some reason, and the gas compartment will pop open on its own from time to time. Other than that, it is a great little car!
accountCircle Simone L on May 27, 2021
It's a great car. But is very small.
Over-all it's a great car. The ashtray is just little. Cant see it at night the lights are low quality. It drives really well and very quiet. They should have put a sunroof on the car as well. The backseat of the car is really small so if your tall or need lots of room this car is not for you. It's a nice size for me and my family because it's only me and my 2 small children.

It drives really good, the speed of the car is fast, Bluetooth is allowed, your mileage of gas you have is also shown and the tire pressure. There is never much wrong with the car. I love how cold it gets in the car when the knob is only on one. The doors automatically lock when the car is in drive, and whenever the car is put into park the doors unlock.

Not the best but good enough and fun.
Hyundai is notorious for poor electronics and my car is no exception. I have a few switches that have stopped working that need to be or have been replaced, and this happened before 100k miles. This vehicle also had quite a few recalls, most notable would be the airbag and engine. All recalls were taken care of with ease and no fighting with the deal/manufacturer. Overall, I am satisfied with Hyundai. You get what you pay for and the quality of Hyundai components is not top or even middle tier. But the car has been reliable and fun (it has a turbo), and now it should last me a bit longer since they gave me a new engine (recall).

Great mileage, not great paint.
The only fault this car has is there seems to be an issue with the paint job from the manufacturer, as it has chipped in multiple places around the body. Mechanically, it is very reliable with decent upkeep done to it. Incredible gas mileage, even with stop-and-go traffic lights on my commute!

The 2010 sonata is actually more updated than the 2011. It has a nice GPS system and touch screen radio with Sirius XM that is very user friendly. It is a very spacious car that has a nice cup holder, sunglasses holder and extra compartment under the radio. 2010 Hyundai sonata review: a great starter car!
My vehicle is a pretty nice starter car. I got it when I turned 16, and it used to be my dad’s car. I have been driving it for two years now, and have learned a view things (good and bad) about it. First thing is that it is a very easy car to drive. I like driving it around cause it is not too big, and not too small. I learned to drive in this car, and it has always been very easy to park and just to drive in general. One thing that I do not really like about this vehicle is that it is pretty sensitive when seasons change. Whenever it goes from summer to winter, the tire pressure light comes on, even though my tire pressure is perfectly fine (after checking it). The light tends to stay on for a couple of days to even a week, and then will go off. But overall this car is really nice to drive, is comfortable, and is the perfect starter car!

Hyundai sonata: affordable, comfortable, reliable.
I bought my car used. Have found no problems. Runs very well, is comfortable and reliable. The gas mileage seems good to me, but I do not drive it very far, really only to school and work, but it is perfect for that. The only thing I wish it had was a working aux or Bluetooth, but it is an older car so it is not surprising.

Practical college kid car.
This is a great gas efficient car for a college student. Or anyone who is wanting a good and reliable car that will last. It has adequate seating and enough leg room that comfortably fits 4. 5 if you wanting to squish. There is plenty of trunk space to hold a lot. I have fit tents and camping chairs and longboards, scooters, and roller blades and still had room to put more in.

My car is the best I have owned. Never had any problems with the car.
It is great had no problems until this month. Had to replace battery, map sensors, fan and cooling senor. We have 177000 miles. Cannot think of anything I do not like about it. The seat can be a little uncomfortable on long trips. Drives smooth and turns on a dime.

Good car for the price and year.
It is been very reliable over the past 5 years. Gas mileage is very good. The SiriusXM radio that it was equipped with has been a blessing. Seating has been fine for 4 people nice legroom for back seats. Trunk space is very large for this size car. I would buy same kind again.

The interior has amazing room for everything and the back seat folds down for access to carry large items.
I like that it has tons of room in the interior and it breaks really well. I don't like how awful it is in the winter with snow.

The fuel gauge malfunctions so it is not a good idea too drive on empty
It has a 4 cylinder engine so I get great gas mileage and acceleration is d**n good too. The color is grey and I liked it at first but now I am tired of looking at it

The car is very long lasting, and great on gas.
Overall my vehicle is pretty decent.. It gets me where I need to go and has never had any major issues seeing that I drive over 40 miles for work. I have fabric seats and they haven't worn out and I have had the car for 10 years. It's good on gas getting around 28 miles to the gallon.
