2008 Infiniti G Review: Pricier Than a BMW 3 Series, but Cheaper to Maintain

Gilbert Smith

The 2008 Infiniti G is a Vehicle History Owner’s Choice award winner for 2008, and with good cause. It’s reliable, fun to drive, luxurious, and cheaper to maintain than a typical luxury car. You can find a sedan in the $8,000 range and the coupe for around $9,000.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
Just as luxurious and sporty as a BMW 3 Series, but far cheaper to maintain.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Repairs start to get more expensive past the 200,000 mile mark. Comparable Lexus, Acura, and Volvo cars will likely outlast the G series.

Is the 2008 Infiniti G a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – Just as good as a BMW 3 in more ways than not, but cheaper to maintain.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – The Infiniti G is one of the most comfortable cars in its class, but the back seat may be an inch too tight, and the coupe’s trunk space is limited.
  • Reliability 8/10 – You should be able to make 200,000 miles with no major repairs, but it won’t outlast a Lexus or a Volvo.
  • Safety 7/10 – Crash test ratings are kind of mediocre, but standard features are generous, including anti-lock brakes and traction control.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – The coupe model does 18/24 miles to the gallon, city/highway, which isn’t bad for a 330 horsepower mid-size.
  • Value 7/10 – It’s a little pricier than a BMW, but you make up the difference with low repair bills.

The best car I've ever owned.
Great, reliable car. The only issue I ever had was with the transmission but it went away after a day. Kind of weird but it never happened again. Other than that, it's a very fun very classy car that I learned to love. Would stay with INFINITY if given the chance.

The most important thing to know about this car is how solid and reliable it is. If you take care of it, the car will last you for as long as you want to keep it.
Extremely reliable vehicle overall. I've had it for 6 years and have never taken it to the shop (all maintenance done at home, easily). In terms of power and driving, it's extremely responsive and a fun drive overall. I can't recommend this car enough.
accountCircle Derrick K
It's a luxury sport car with nice horsepower for a very good price.
For a small car it has a lot of room for a 6'2 driver like myself and very comfortable , the Bose sound system is perfect for a car that size, what I don't like is that when it rains it leaks inside the trunk over the passenger side rear tire.

Fun to drive. Fast. Looks good.
This car is very reliable. It has dashboard issues. The dashboards melt and get sticky and can reflect sun.

The way it looks, amazing power and handling! Great interior and sound system everything I need.
Previous two cars where BMWs 335i twin turbo and M3 V8 both great cars so I wasn’t sure about the G37S but to my surprise it’s been an easy transition! Sure it’s not the M3 but really a fun car to drive with decent power and handling great everyday driver

The Infiniti g37x can be summarized as affordable luxury!
The Infiniti g37x is a well priced luxury vehicle. The car handles well, even in rough weather. Gas mileage is comparable to others in the same class. My only complaint is the electrical system within the dashboard. Constant maintenance needs to be performed. .

I love my Infiniti g37 sport coupe 6-speed manual transmission!!
I love my Infiniti g37 sport coupe, 6 speed manual transmission! This car is sports car meets luxury vehicle. Excellent performance and handing like a sports car, with heated leather seats, satellite radio, navigation system, etc., like a luxury vehicle. I will always own an Infiniti brand vehicle, for my car is utmost reliable.

I love the power and the sportiness of the car. I love the white with black interior. No complaints right now.

Over all an okay vehicle, dependable.
Too low to the ground for the area I live in. I have had to buy lots of new tires due to this. Also with heavy rains I have to move my car a lot so it does not flood. The car does have great horsepower and a great sound system. Overall the car is okay, gets me from point A to point B.

What Do Critics Say About the 2008 Infiniti G?

Consumer Reports named the Infinity G the top car in its class, praising the agile handling, sporty performance, and comfortable interior. They note that the car is a bit of a tight fit, lacking rear hip room and trunk space, but they had few other complaints.

Kelley Blue Book report the Infiniti G being a more affordable alternative to the BMW 3 Series Coupe. They found that the car did a fine job of combining luxury, cutting-edge technology, style, and performance all in one package.

Edmunds liked the powerful CV6 engine under the Infiniti G’s hood. They found the cabin roomy enough given the size class, they liked the responsive handling and braking, and they liked the modest price. They note that the clutch pedal feels tricky in a 6-speed manual model.

What Common Problems Does the 2008 Infiniti G Have?

The 2008 Infiniti G has generated just 86 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Around one third of these are for the airbags, with reports of airbag warning lights flashing on for no apparent reason. A recall was issued in 2008 for occupant classification system glitches.

10 powertrain complaints point to issues with the car stalling in traffic. Drivers report this issue leading to transmission repairs, and usually occurring somewhere between 90,000 to 100,000 miles. Incidence rate is fairly low.

A handful of structure complaints report severe rust in the frame of the car. One driver reports a hole below their passenger door that’s big enough to see through, with their car only having 63,000 miles on the odometer. This issue is easy to prevent with anti-rust spray, but effectively impossible to fix.

The 2008 Infiniti G has only been recalled once, for the above-mentioned airbag occupant sensor issue. Add that to fewer than 100 driver complaints, and you’ve got a car with no major mechanical issues to worry about.

How Long Will the 2008 Infiniti G Last?

Drivers generally report the Infiniti G lasting at least 200,000 miles. Excellent care might get you to 250,000 miles before it becomes too expensive to repair, but maintenance for those first 200,000 miles should be pretty affordable.

Repairpal estimate an annual maintenance cost of $487, which isn’t bad for a luxury sedan. The most expensive common fixes include new power seat control modules, starting at around $991, and new brake master cylinders at $476.

accountCircle Kathy L

The car is extremely reliable and very high end. I bought it use and it was excellent condition. I would highly recommend this car for anyone. It does sit low to the ground though.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2008 Infiniti G is impressive for 2008. CD/MP3 players come standard, with an audio input jack, 6 speakers, and XM satellite radio. Audio controls are mounted to the steering wheel, and you’ve got a seven inch color display screen.

Safety technology is good for the model year, too. The car comes standard with anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution.

Is the 2008 Infiniti G a Good Value?

The 2008 Infiniti G is priced fairly, with an entry-level sedan typically listing for around $7,758, and a high-end model going for around $8,183. A coupe typically lists at around $9,014. These prices may be higher than many sedans and coupes in this size class, but they’re around the median for a sporty luxury car.

With the price range being pretty narrow between the entry-level and high-end models, you might assume the Sport edition is a no-brainer. But, you don’t really get that much extra for the money. All the best features are packed into the Base model, leaving the Journey and Sport editions with nowhere to go.

What are the Different Models of the 2008 Infiniti G?

The Infiniti G is available in sedan (G35), all wheel drive sedan (G35x), and coupe (G37) models, split into three trim levels, being the Base, Journey, and Sport editions.

In a Base model you’re getting:

  • Anti-lock brakes and traction control
  • Remote keyless entry
  • CD/MP3 player with auxiliary input jack
  • Leather seating
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio and cruise controls
  • 7 inch color LCD monitor

The mid-range Journey adds:

  • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Automatic headlights

In a top-of-the-line Sport you’re adding:

  • Unique Sport edition front fascia and side sills

What Engines Come In the 2008 Infiniti G?

  • The G37 Coupe model packs a 3.7L V6 engine delivering 330 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission in rear wheel drive, it averages 17/26 miles to the gallon, city/highway, and it can go zero to sixty in just 5.7 seconds.
  • In the G35 sedan you’ll find a 3.5L V6 engine delivering 306 horsepower and 268 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 5-speed automatic in rear wheel drive, and it averages 17/24 miles to the gallon. The G35x model comes in all wheel drive.

What Colors Does the 2008 Infiniti G Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2008 Infiniti G?

Both the Coupe and Sedan models stretch about 53 inches across at the hip. The Sedan is, of course, the roomier of the two. Both models feature smooth-riding suspension, high-quality seating, and high-end interior trim materials, so while the G35 may be the more comfortable option, neither are uncomfortable.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2008 Infiniti G Have?

The G35 offers up about 14 cubic feet of storage space, which will pack five or six medium suitcases. The G37 coupe packs just over 7 cubic feet, which is barely enough room for a picnic lunch. If you’re buying a G37, it’s definitely more of a weekend driver than a road tripper.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The 2008 Infiniti G was the second model year for the sedan, and the first model year for the coupe in the 4th Generation line.

2006: New headlights, bumpers, and spoilers, plus hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, brought the 2006 G model into the modern era.

2007: Sedans were totally redesigned for 2007, with a stiffer body structure, modernized styling, and a retuned chassis for improved handling.

2008: The coupe was added to the 4th Gen lineup in 2008.

2009: Sport brakes were added as an option for sedans in 2009.

2010: The Infiniti G got a new front end for 2010 with a larger grille and darker headlights.

How Does the 2008 Infiniti G Compare to the Competition?

The 2008 BMW 3 Series comes in a wider range of body styles, including wagons, and at a slightly lower price, starting in the mid $6,500 range. It also comes with higher repair bills than the Infiniti G, costing $700 and up in annual maintenance due to the specialty services required.

A Volvo S60 isn’t quite as powerful as an Infiniti G, and it’s sort of boring to look at, but it’s just as luxurious, and it’s one of the safest and most reliable cars in the world. It typically sells in the same price range as the BMW 3, but it can be hard to track one down on the used market.

The Infiniti G is one of the better used luxury cars on the market today. It’s a little pricier than some of its competitors, but it makes up the difference with low repair bills.

Beats the BMW 3 Series
I have about 70K miles on my G35 sedan. I was considering the small BMW but am glad that I bought the Infinity. Great power and handling together with very low maintenance cost. My only complaint is that the windshield washers clog up and have to be cleaned periodically. The styling of the body is first rate with a slight forward rake and very minimal body sculpting. What's not to like?!

The gas is over way to priced.
I love my car it gets me from point A to Be with no problem, it's also a nice looking car and the inside has everything you would ever need my car has been reliable for a couple years and I have no complaints a big plus for me is that it has heated seats for the winter and the ac is amazing for the hot summers.

Never any issues! Second one I've owned, great performance vehicle. I purchased the car brand new in 2008 and it still looks new. I have been consistent with regular maintenance otherwise no issues. The G35 is great in Upstate Ny snow and handles perfectly in the summer, speed and efficiently handles turns.

The vehicle is very comfortable. The only downside it burns a lot of gas.
It is very comfortable and smooth. Basic features from a 2008 car that you would expect. Very reliable but the only complaint is the amount of gas it uses. The Infiniti g35 is cable to taking you wherever is needed on your daily bases. The interior of the vehicle is very spacious.

G35 The sedan that's too fast
My car is well taken care of, the leather is still nice and plush, as well as the performance of the car is still at peak condition, the manual option is nice when you like to use power, the features are obviously not up to date because it's a 2008 but for what it had when it came out it was ahead of its time with the gadgets it has to offer

The Infiniti g35 is a beautiful car that drives smooth and has an awesome pick up to it!
I love the Infiniti g35 model. The look is stylish and classy, it drives super smooth and it has convenient features. The one I have is at about 120,000 miles and I did have to replace the a/c and a part that connects the radiator because it was coming loose and starting to overheat. Besides those issues I love the car and would definitely recommend it to friends and family!

It Takes a lot of money to keep it up. And although it looks nice, this car is for people who don't mind throwing away money on expensive maintenance. This car has the potential to be a good car if it wasn't so expensive.
I like the luxury car feel and how smooth my car rides. I really dislike how expensive the required maintenance is on it. I also dislike the fact that it will only take premium gas.

Beware of the gas mileage, it's not that great. It was equivalent to my jeep.
The Infiniti is a very smooth drive, gets up and goes and is quiet. The back seat and trunk are big. I don't enjoy the gas mileage, I wish it were more efficient and the seats aren't that comfortable when taking a long trip.
accountCircle Nick F on June 16, 2020
Very fast and fashionable
My car to me definitely has more positives than negatives. For example: it's fast, spacious, fashionable. On the other hand, because of the leather it tends to get very hot when I turn the car off and go inside for a few hours, also it costs a lot to fill the tank (takes 93 gas).

Look into the leakage problem. Ask if Infiniti has fixed it. First started leaking at about the 6th or 7th year.
Comfortable car with good pickup, which I love. Nice styling. Only issue we had with it, which was an issue, was leaking around the sunroof into the interior! Found a mechanic who knew how to blow out the drainage lines. This may be improved on newer models. Roomy enough trunk, heated seats, good adjustments capabilities on the ventilation system.

Could hold on to this car forever!
Overall, this vehicle is very low maintenance. I have only had to have my brakes replaced once in the 5 years that I have had the car. The interior still looks great. The sound system is phenomenal. The paint job could hold up a little bit better, but it still looks great for the most part, just a bit dull and some chipping. It is a great car.

Sleeks and sporty sedan that rivals BMW
The 08 G35 Sedan is very sporty and sleek. It feels powerful and handles very well. The interior is leather and well designed and the sound system is very clear and sounds wonderful. The transmission can act up sometimes, at slower speeds, but it may vary from vehicle to vehicle. The engine is very reliable, mine is on 150k miles and has no problems other than a slight oil leak. There have been no other problems with the car.

The car drives great and has done well over the past ten years. It is comfortable and has nice features like heated seats and rear backup camera. One major issue I have with the car is the paint they used on the door and steering wheel. It has peeled off over time making the car look less attractive. The cracks of the seats make it difficult to clean on the crumbs out well, which is important when you have two small children.

Great Pickup but expensive repairs
The vehicle has a really nice pickup to it if you're looking for a faster car. It has 120000 miles and works just like it did when we first got it. The only problem is as it's gotten older we've been having issues with the battery. And with it being an Infiniti repairs can be somewhat costly. Great, sleek, highly functional car.
This car features a sleek, modern look for today’s society even though it is a 2008. It is a great, reliable car, but does require a more expensive upkeep with premium gas, a more expensive oil change, more expensive parts when needed. The engine in this car is great and really has some get up and go. My least favorite part of the vehicle is the dashboard. It is somewhat difficult to navigate and not exactly intuitive where the buttons are located.
