2009 Infiniti G Review: A Good Luxury Car, but Showing its Age

Gilbert Smith
Jul 10, 2023

The 2009 Infiniti G is everything you want in a luxury sports car. It’s powerful, fast, comfy, fun to drive, and stylish. But, a model with 140,000 miles on the odometer will usually go for $8,000 to $10,000, and it’s only expected to last 200,000 miles. That’s just not a very wise investment when the Lexus ES will likely hit 300,000 miles for the same price.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
Comfy, stylish, sporty, fun to drive, and powerful, with the Sport model delivering a whopping 330 horsepower.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Eight thousand dollars is a lot of money to spend on a car that probably won’t last another 60,000 miles.

Is the 2009 Infiniti G a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – The Infiniti G is a very good luxury sports car, it’s just past its prime.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – This is a very, very comfortable car for two people. Any more than that and it starts feeling crowded. Cargo space is limited.
  • Reliability 7/10 – The Infiniti G is hardly a lemon, it’s a dependable car, but most models on the market today are nearing the end of their life expectancy.
  • Safety 7/10 – Safety features are adequate, and crash test scores are good.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – The base sedan averages 17/26 miles to the gallon, which is pretty good for a 2009 luxury car.
  • Value 6/10 – Five years ago, the 2009 Infiniti G would have been a gem. Now it’s only worth buying if you can find one with under 100,000 miles on the odometer.

My Infiniti coupe has been very good to me. I have only done the proper maintenance on it. I haven't had any problems with it either. It's reliable, comfortable, & rides smooth. I have had this car for about 3 years. I always recommend an Infiniti vehicle to my friends & family

Sleek, fast, safe and reliable.
My car is sleek and sporty and has enough horsepower to make it fun to drive. It is all wheel drive so it performs well in the rain and snow. I have not done any major repairs and only spent a minimal amount on suspension work after 230,000 miles. I love it.

I had my car for 5 years. I have had minimal problems with the car. The performance of this vehicle is ahead of its time. My favorite feature of the car is the backup camera. Excellent gas mileage in the city and on the highway
Had great gas mileage, spacious, cheap on gas, large trunk. One of my headlights are having an electrical issue but other than that the car is amazing and I love it! It's great for vacationing and the ac and heater work wonders. Insurance on this car is kind of on the more expensive side though.

Fun fast and sporty little car
I really love the Comforts of this vehicle. It is comfortable for long rides and great on gas very reliable for long distance travel. Another Plus is it's got a killer sound system that comes stock. The downsides are prices for parts are expensive so hopefully you know how to do your own work to the car otherwise you will pay an insane amount of money at a dealership or mechanic shop and there's a known issue with the interior lights and dash lights going out.

Leticia's Take On her Infiniti G37
I haven't had any problems, it performs well and is in great condition for a 10 year old car. It has leather seats, Bluetooth, sunroof, tinted windows and many other features of a fully loaded vehicle. It's has a V6 engine which can use a lot of gas at times and requires premium gas only.

Storage space and cargo pass-through trap door.
My vehicle does not have a smooth ride and it sounds like something is loose in the wheel well. However, it does have very good pick up and go. The back seat is roomy for passengers. The trunk is large and can hold many items, it also has a small hatch to open to allow you to put long items into the trunk and feed them through to the car body.

Comfortable ride. Leather has held up.
Just recently bought the car so I do not have much information. That being said, I bought as it is historically one of the most reliable cars.

Fast and sporty, good speed and good looking.
It is a fast car but it has had some problems in the past. It's harder to drive than regular cars since it's a sports addition but nothing anyone can't handle I believe. It's also a little small space wise inside so it's not made for kids or traveling. I would say it's good for one person or a couple.

What Do Critics Say About the 2009 Infiniti G?

Consumer Reports found the G37 they reviewed to feel a bit out of date with modern luxury sports cars, but pleasing to drive nonetheless. They liked the quick acceleration and agile handling, they liked the intuitive controls, and they found the cabin comfortable enough for four adults.

Kelley Blue Book liked the generous features and sporty vibes of the 2009 Infiniti G. They note that German car fans are unlikely to be swayed from their Audis and BMWs, though, as the car has a distinctly Asian-made vibe to it, which may be a positive or a negative depending on your preferences.

Edmunds found the V6 engine muscular, they liked the wide range of body styles, they found the handling sharp and the brakes strong, and they liked the long list of high-tech features at a fair price. They note that the coupe’s cramped back seats are a downer, and the engine can be a bit noisy at high RPMs.

What Common Problems Does the 2009 Infiniti G Have?

The 2009 Infiniti G has generated just 158 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 83 of these are for airbags, making up roughly half of the total, with drivers reporting the airbag light blinking. One driver reports an occupant sensor failure leading to a $6,400 repair.

A handful of drivers have reported engine issues ranging from jumping and lurching in and out of first gear to excessive oil consumption. These complaints have become more common in recent years, so it may have more to do with normal wear and tear than with any factory defect.

There are 13 electrical complaints on file, with the most worrying having to do with ignition failure. One driver states that they have been replacing their battery on a monthly basis, and the problem still persists.

The 2009 Infiniti G has zero recalls on file as of the time of this writing. 4-6 recalls is typical for a vehicle this old.

How Long Will the 2009 Infiniti G Last?

Drivers report the Infiniti G typically lasting around 200,000 miles with basic maintenance. If you only take the Infiniti out on weekends and you really baby it, you might be able to get 250,000 miles out of it, but 200,000 is the usual life expectancy before the more expensive repairs mount up.

Repairpal estimate an annual maintenance cost of around $514, which is lower than average for a 2009 luxury sedan. The most expensive common repair would be for new exhaust manifolds, starting at around $979.

accountCircle Mark M

My Infiniti g37x has been an excellent car. It has been very reliable which is very important to me as I often travel alone. I haven't had any major problems with this car. The only things I have had to do to the car very really just maintenance issues.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment tech in the 2009 Infiniti G is pretty basic. If you’re not shelling out for one of the premium packages, CD/MP3 players are about as fancy as it gets, and the premium features, like touchscreen navigation, are less impressive now than they were in 2009.

Safety technology is adequate. You’ve got anti-lock brakes, traction control, and electronic brake assist.

Is the 2009 Infiniti G a Good Value?

The 2009 Infiniti G is not a very good value right now. An entry-level sedan typically lists for around $8,104, while a high-end Convertible might go for $10,136. These are for models with around 140,000 miles on the odometer, and, with a life expectancy of just 200,000, you’re just not getting enough bang for your buck.

In all fairness, the Infiniti G is relatively low maintenance and fuel efficient for a sporty luxury sedan, but Acura and Lexus both offer alternatives at the same price that will potentially last you two, three times as long after you drive it off the lot.

What are the Different Models of the 2009 Infiniti G?

The 2009 Infiniti G is offered in three body styles, being sedan, coupe, and convertible, and four trim levels, from the self-explanatory Base to the high-end Sport. Note that the various trim levels don’t add a ton of features, as those will come down to which optional packages the first owner selected.

With the entry-level Base you’re getting:

  • Leather seating
  • Fog lights
  • 8-way power adjust driver seat
  • CD/MP3 player
  • Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control
  • Automatic air conditioning

The mid-range Journey adds:

  • Dual zone automatic air conditioning

Next up is the S Sport, adding:

  • 18″ silver aluminum wheels

Finally, the top-of-the-line Sport features:

What Engines Come In the 2009 Infiniti G?

  • The 2009 Infiniti G packs a 3.7L V6 engine. This is paired to a 7-speed automatic transmission in rear wheel drive in all models but the Sport, where it’s paired to a 6-speed manual. The Sport delivers 330 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque at an average fuel economy of 17/25 miles to the gallon, city/highway, while the other models deliver 328 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque at around 17/26 MPG.

What Colors Does the 2009 Infiniti G Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2009 Infiniti G?

The 2009 Infiniti G is very comfortable for two people, moderately comfortable for four, and a bit tight for five. The suspension rides smooth and you’ve got 55 inches of hip room, but the back seat is a bit small for three adults, even in the larger body styles.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2009 Infiniti G Have?

The 2009 Infiniti G offers 7 cubic feet of cargo space in the coupe, or 13 in the sedan. The four-door will pack four or five medium suitcases. The two-door models will carry a week’s worth of groceries.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2009 was the third model year for the sedan, and the second for the coupe, in the Infiniti G’s 4th Generation.

2007: The sedan was totally redesigned with a re-tuned chassis, improved handling, and a stiffer body structure.

2008: Coupes were added for 2008.

2009: The sedan received optional Sport brakes.

2010: New front ends featured bigger grilles and darker headlights.

2011: The Limited Edition model debuted in 2011, featuring sport-tuned steering.

How Does the 2009 Infiniti G Compare to the Competition?

The Infiniti G is preferable to some of the premium luxury sedans released in its model year, easily outlasting the BMW 3 Series and coming in with lower repair bills, but a slightly higher sticker price.

On the other hand, the Infiniti G is easily outclassed by the Lexus ES if you’re grading on longevity. The Lexus isn’t as sporty, it can’t match the G’s 330 horsepower, but it might last twice as long with the same level of maintenance.

The 2009 Infiniti G is a decent luxury sports car. It’s powerful, comfortable, and fun to drive. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend eight thousand dollars on a car that’s expected to last 200,000 miles when it already has 140,000 miles on the odometer.

It leaks very easily however it is otherwise great car.
I like how it has lasted over the last 9 years. No major complaints. One thing that is an issue with mine and others who own it is it leaks very easily. I've had to get lots of repair done due to the amount of water that gets into the car.

A smooth ride with great acceleration!
I love my infinity! It is so fun to drive. I can get to 60 mph in the blink of an eye. I easily avoided a wreck because it maneuvers so well. I have a bad back. So getting in and out of a car, especially low to the ground can be difficult. But I do not have any trouble getting in and out of my g37. The ride is so comfortable. I have been in other sports cars, but they were never this smooth. The only complaint I might have is that I have to use the higher octane fuel. But I am not complaining. It is worth it. I bought this car used. But my next new car will be an infinity.

No really major problems, car runs in good condition. If something major does happen the parts for this particular make and model are very expensive, but that is expected because it is an older model. Not to many miles on the car, the interior is very durable. Not too much bad I can say about the car. I think I made a great investment.

The performance of my g37x is exemplary, and the car is quite comfortable as well (including the back seat for passengers). The reliability has also been reasonably good. Car is a fun fast vehicle!! It is a sports car with luxury features. . . The vehicle is a eye catcher for sure. A little pricey when doing anything on the car. Oil changes, tires, etc. . If you take care of the vehicle it will last a long time. . . Only thing about the vehicle is that they are known to have some transmission issues, but I would consider that to be based on how the vehicle was handled over the years. It is a compact car, so space is limited but it is still a comfortable car with the necessary space you would need in a sports car. I like the automatic shifters that are on the steering wheel that allow for quick gear changes without having to remove hands from wheel.

Probably my favorite vehicle so far.
I have had no problems with this car. I have over 160,000 miles on the car. So far it has been very reliable and has not needed anything except routine maintenance. It has good power and accelerates well when getting on the highway. It is all wheel drive and is very stable and makes me feel confident on the road. It is very comfortable and fits me well. It could have plusher softer seats. They are somewhat hard and sporty feeling. The seats are a nice color leather and are still in great condition. All the small details have been thought of. Everything is within reach and easy to use. The cup holders are a little tight. There could be more room. Sometimes I cannot fit two cups next to each other. When the high beam light are on, the light for them inside the car is behind the steering wheel making it hard to see whether they are on or off while driving. The navigation system has been very helpful and the radio is set up for XM/Sirius radio. The keyless entry and start are a nice option and have made it easier for me so that I do not have to dig for keys in my purse. I like the color inside and out and the styling is very nice. Larger tires make it look like a solid vehicle, which it is. Since we live where we have cold winters, the heated seats are always a great option. When I get a new car someday, I will want to have the heated steering wheel as well.

Slight delay in acceleration when starting from a complete position. The car has proven to be a bit of a mechanical letdown. Two costly repairs that seem unusual were a leak in the fuel system and breaking of a suspension feature. The controls to things like navigation lock up when you drive.
