Alex Showalter
Nov 29, 2021

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a midsize SUV with a price range of $12,676 to $20,018. It’s more affordable than other midsize SUVs, but poor long-term reliability makes it more expensive to own.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee has an upscale interior for its price, up-to-date technology, and a powerful optional V6 engine.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are expensive mechanical issues. It does not have as much cargo space as other SUVs, and the transmission shifts roughly between gears making it uncomfortable to drive.

2014 Jeep Cherokee: Quick Overview

  • 2014 is the first model year of the 5th generation of the Cherokee, with an all-new exterior, interior, and engine choices.
  • Reliability ratings are lower than average, according to J.D. Power. The 2014 model year has more complaints than any other year.
  • Two engines are available. One is a fuel-efficient four-cylinder, and the V6 offers good power for an SUV its size.
  • Fuel economy is good and it ranks 3rd out of 22 midsize SUVs, getting a combined rating of up to 25 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are average for its class, getting four stars in government crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also awards it a Top Safety Pick.
  • The 2014 Jeep Cherokee ranks near the bottom of the midsize SUV lineup based on owner reviews. It simply has too many problems, and there are better SUVs on the market for shoppers.

Quiet, smooth & stylish ride.
Comfortable interior, smooth & quiet ride, sleek lines, reliable. Reasonably priced. Good acceleration & smooth breaking. The only issue is the large blind spot caused by the side rails between front windshield & side windows - I have almost hit people because of it.

The reliable jeep Cherokee latitude.
Overall it's a good jeep, I haven't had many problems with it at all and I've had it for years. I love the four wheel drive. It's a reliable vehicle with a smooth drive. Besides routine maintenance like replacing the tires and fluids I haven't had to put any money into repairs.

It is a great vehicle and very user friendly.
I like that it is low maintenance, not many issues, and great gas mileage for an SUV. I do not like that it is a 4-cylinder because it takes a minute to accelerate sometimes. Other than that, no complaints.
accountCircle Cindy W
It has good gas mileage for being a Jeep and is very comfortable to ride in.
About the Jeep, I dislike the hesitation when accelerating, otherwise, I love it! Has great gas mileage for being an SUV.

Best car ever — couldn't recommend enough.
This is the best car I have ever driven. It is smooth, the features are luxurious, and I am always excited to drive it. I feel safe and comfortable. I love that it is spacious to fit five people and I have ample room in the trunk for anything I need. I have so many good things to say.

It is so comfortable to drive.
I like the comfort of the driver's seat. It has 6 way adjustable seating for a good fit. It handles very smoothly in all types of weather. The only thing I dislike is the transmission because it is rough.

I take very good care of it and keep up on all maintenance.
I absolutely LOVE my jeep. It is so reliable and lets me know when things changing and filling. It comes with a panoramic sunroof. Heated and air seats and heated steering wheel

Jeep 2014
This is the worst car suv ever ~ so far I’ve replace the transmission ~ the rear differential ~the 4x4~ that was the first 2 years of owning car. Now with no notice what so ever after driving an hour away from home the car won’t start, ok get it towed to dealer~ ok they say starter and battery the next day they call and say the started made the alternator start smoking now you need a new alternator. All this in one trip ! Really sorry I don’t believe them! Been a week and I still don’t have my car something is going on! I will never tell anyone to buy a Jeep again even though all I’ve owned was jeeps ~ I’m done

Service Department knows my voice.
My jeep Cherokee 2014 is the most unreliable car I have owned in over 22 years. It has had so many issues the service department people know my voice when I call. They all smile and wave when I walk in because they know me so well. I owned two cars for 11 years each. I have taken my jeep Cherokee in for service in the 4 1/2 years since I bought it brand new more than both of my 11-year-old cars combined.

Jeeps have gone downhill. They're not made as well as they used to be.
We've hated this car since we got it. It is not a smooth ride at all. The transmission is almost “jerky” as it changes gears. We've taken it to multiple dealers and they have all told us that there’s nothing wrong with the car.

Unhappy jeep owner for five years.
Unhappy after 5 years of driving & owning this vehicle terrible reliability & performance is subpar at best. Small cabin & not much storage space... Does not even come with a spare! What is up with that jeep! Wish I could have afforded Trailhawk version at least!

The technology is amazing. However I think that is why it have so many problems.
The vehicle engine light comes on daily. I've had it for a year with 26000 miles on and I had to bring it to the dealer shop more than 8 times. All transmission related problems. Beautiful interior, nice space, and lovely exterior. Unfortunately the car is not reliable. It jerks a lot when switching gears and make noise when turning off like a robot.

Transmission
We bought a used Latitude about a year ago. We now have 85000 miles and the transmission is not working and it left my son and 2 of his friends stranded on the side of the highway. Nothing but issues with transmissions on the 14 model. Will not buy another jeep or recommend anyone else buy one. JUNK. No help from my local dealer.

Safety
I would not recommend this Jeep. This October I will make my final payment and when I do the math, I could have been driving a Mercedes E class!!! So, I don’t know what happened there! Regardless, I started off with 2 Jeep Cherokees in 2014. The first one was a “managers special!” And was a lemon!! The transmission kept slipping, kept slipping, kept slipping. The best was at a Stop sign. I stepped on the gas to go and the stupid Jeep was in 3rd gear just chugging alone like The Little Engine That Could. Luckily, I ate Granny Gutch‘s horn and not her T-bone. Jesus take the wheel. The second one, which was “key for key,” (never trust a dealer who says this FYI!!!) was brand new was given to me without HEADLIGHTS. Since it was a BRAND NEW model I didn’t question the lights. I just assumed the lights were really poor. It was only when my headlight went out that I found out I had no fog lights, which are the “head lights,” hmmm.. I always thought fog lights were fog lights and headlights were head lights or high beams, low beams. Anyway... The mechanic who changed my lights did “full service” check and found wires tucked under the steering wheel hanging freely. He said, “you have been driving without headlights since you bought this vehicle??!” Now, this was 2019!!!!! I felt like a complete A hole. Is this a dealership faux pas or the manufacturer???? SAFETY FAIL Cosmetics:: The Jeep is 6 years old, but looks like an old junkie. I had one fender bump, not a “bender!” That’s it. No other accidents, bumps or bruises. However, the paint job rots. It has rust spots, bubbling areas, and chips all over the hood. The interior plastic or “sheet metal” on the door panels and the door handles are another an issue I cannot get past. One day I was walking to work and noticed my finger was in dire need of stitches. I was clueless to what I did and frankly, when I did it!!!! Come to find out, the door handle is made of a thin sheet metal. It just decided one day to peel and transform itself from a beautiful, functional, Jeep door handle to a, “your doomed with this Jeep for the rest of your life, do it now, slice up your fingers with my new Wolverine life like door handles!!! Lol Yes!!! Imagine, I had to wrap Wolverine with floss after the tenth time I sliced myself. Those repair guys quoted me a “new door” at 700.00. Yeah, ok! It’s a Basic Jeep (Eye roll). -Blind spots galore, no pick up; Fred Flinstone can run faster carrying his car before this Jeep accelerates!! - soccer mom hubs, check engine light on for what reason! No one seems to ever know-it’s a Jeep thing. -no roof rack, no tail hitch, horrible speakers. Forget about Shopping or traveling, trying to fit an 8x10 rug in the trunk or 1 mountain bike without taking off the front wheel, Forget about it. ** Tonight I was driving home and my transmission started slipping! I believe it is because I have ONLY 9 more financial hardships and it is mine! I did mention after the 6 years and my monthly calculations, I could be driving a Mercedes E Class!!!! That is on me ? -Jeep Sabotaged my s**y

Poor choice getting rid of my Ford Explorer for a Jeep Cherokee
I have had nothing but problems with my Jeep. There has been a rattle in the front end since I bought it and have had to take it to the dealership on occasions and still don't know what it is. Replaced the whole underneath of the vehicle with new parts. New sunroof in out. It was in the shop. In the shop the four weeks when I first bought it.

What Problems Does the 2014 Jeep Cherokee have?

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s problems and recalls cover powertrain failures, cruise control malfunctions, and faulty airbags. The 2014 Cherokee is the worst year based on the number of complaints. It has more problems than the 2015 and 2016 models. It also has a higher number of issues compared to other midsize SUVs.

Transmission problems are extremely common on the 2014 Cherokee, and include shifting rough between gears. Owners report updating the software fixes it in some cases, and in others the transmission requires a complete replacement.

Engine problems are also frequently found in the Cherokee, including the engine stalling while driving. The source of the problem varies and owners report replacing engine components, replacing the entire engine, and replacing a wiring harness. It takes a professional to diagnose the problem if you notice stalling.

Radio problems are another complaint owners have. The system will turn on and off randomly and is caused by software or hardware problems. Sometimes a software update fixes the issue, and other times it needs a replacement.

There are 12 recalls affecting the 2014 Cherokee, worse than average for an SUV its age. How Long Will the 2014 Jeep Cherokee Last?

A 2014 Jeep Cherokee will last about 150,000 miles, lower than average for its class. Several serious mechanical issues make it expensive to own long-term. Repair Pal estimates maintenance costs to be average for its class, at $540 per year.

accountCircle Emily S

Yes, it is reliable. We have had 2 issues with it since purchasing, one of which was expensive but relatively minor (issue with key fob requiring replacement). Have not had issues with the ignition, engine, etc.

accountCircle Austin F

Yes I would consider it a reliable vehicle that does not have many problems. The parts last a long time.

accountCircle Robert M

Yes, my jeep is very reliable. I have put over 100 thousand miles on it in just over a year! I haven't had to do any maintenance besides getting my oil changed.

accountCircle Brandon P

So far it has been pretty good, the dealer did a lousy job of set up though. The lights didn't work properly and I had to take it back. I am hoping it continues to be reliable during the time frame that I own it.

accountCircle Danielle L

The vehicle is reliable (no major breakdowns). There have been problems with the trunk not appropriately latching in which dealerships have noted they cannot replicate the problem so it would be guesswork at fixing the issue.

accountCircle jaz a

The jeep Cherokee latitude is very reliable. It has minimal problems. The only problems I have had with it is with a sensor in the transmission. I got that repaired and it has been running great since then with no problems.

accountCircle Maria C

Interior is cheaply made the seats are ok. Touch screen is not very responsive. Transmission is starting to slip. But it plows through the snow with no issues.

accountCircle Amanda P

I've never had a mechanical breakdown in 30k miles. The battery failed after 4 years/24k but from what I understand that is on par.

How Does the 2014 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other SUVs?

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee ranks 16th out of 22 midsize SUVs based on owner reviews, placing it near the bottom of its class.

At the top of the lineup is the Toyota FJ Cruiser, which is more expensive and off-road-oriented than the Jeep. The Toyota has higher reliability ratings, but the technology is better in the Cherokee. I love my jeep! Very reliable and fun to drive.
This is the best car I have had in decades. Very reliable through long commutes, comfortable and roomy, ok with gas usage and fun to drive! It is got a smooth ride and does not fail on rough terrain. Good in snow and bad weather. With my maintenance contract purchased from jeep upkeep has been relatively inexpensive.

Make the height of the Cherokee the same as the grand Cherokee.
The problem I have with it is that comparatively to the grand Cherokee or the wrangler. It does not sit at the same height level, and I wish it did. I think the Cherokee would be better for most people, especially myself if it sat at the same level as the gc. You can feel the difference when you sit in them, and drive them.

The jeep Cherokee is reliable and sporty, a perfect family car.
It is a comfortable car that drives well. It is sporty but is also a perfect family car. There’s plenty of room for a large family and for great storage in the truck but it does not feel too big and never is an issue parking in tight sports. The seats are comfortable and roomy. It is holds gas well and performs very well on long car trips. We have had little maintenance issues with it too.

Better mom car than a minivan.
I love this size of this smaller SUV and the look of the car. I wish that I hadn't purchased the first year that the vehicle was released. The jeep has always been a little loud when warming up or idling and was told that all of the 2014 jeep cherokee’s sounded like that. Also had to have the navigation and screen system replaced BC it was defective.

Jeep Cherokee review summary- pros, cons.
I purchased a 2014 jeep Cherokee in 2017 with 55,000 miles on the car. The first year I had no issues whatsoever. The jeep I purchased ran great. As of right now- my jeep has over 100,000 miles. Around 90,000 miles I started having various “code” and transmission issues. By this time I have put into my car more money than I owe. I will say I am impressed by the gas mileage jeeps have, I can go almost a whole week without filling up if I am not traveling. In my personal opinion I do think jeeps are great short term vehicles, if you are looking for a reliable car that will last you year and years I would go a different route. Personally I will never purchase a jeep model car again.

An amazing and safe car! I would recommend it!
Noise when turning. Sometimes it goes away and sometimes I hear it. The windshield wipers come in by themselves and the high beams turn down when they sense a car. If there is a car next to you and try to get over your car will beep really loud. I have a sunroof that is the whole roof.

Interior stays cooler than dark colors.
My jeep is comfortable on long trips, the seats adjust great. I like that I can put the back seat down to haul bigger items. The gas mileage is good and I have had very few problems with the vehicle. Just recently had to get the intake manifold replaced, but it was covered under extended warranty. Other than that no complaints on the vehicle at all.

Great vehicle off-roading especially on soft beach sand.
I had a transmission issue at only 33000 miles. The technician has never seen that issue. They did replace and fix and so far no problems. The jeep is extremely good on south beach sand and dirt. I use the 4x4 option every weekend and it handles very well. The gas mileage is also very good. I drive 250 miles plus a week on average and fill the tank only once a week. I would recommend this car.

Jeep with an attitude rawr.
I love the truck and its capabilities but the trans blows. If I go long on an oil change it has given men issues. Otherwise the wild peak tires makes this a monster. I would recom. Mend it to everyone. The sound system is awesome and the screen is a great addition.

2014 jeep Cherokee: better be in it for the long haul.
Not the most reliable car. I have had issues with the electronics. As well as random sensors going. I was in a bad accident where the airbags should have deployed and they did not. The car itself is nice and my interior is great. The gas mileage is nothing to brag about. There is alot of better cars out there on the market.

Slight slip in the clutch when taking off. Other than that small issue, best and most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Does great on highways and high clearance 4x4 roads alike. Gas mileage on the highway can get up to 25 mph and the stereo sounds great as well. Lots of room for luggage and my dog on road trips.

Quite simply, I love my jeep Cherokee!
My 2014 jeep Cherokee Trailhawk has been exceptionally dependable in heavy commuter situations, community/family transportation and on long trips. This car has never needed major repairs and just one minor repair. I do maintain it well (which could be expensive but I purchased a relatively reasonable 10 year maintenance agreement with the car via jeep so that has not been an issue.) The car is a solid, comfortable ride with a good number of power, handling and comfort/entertainment features. Mileage is average and there is quality throughout. I thoroughly enjoy driving this car. My last car was a jeep as well and its dependability over 12 years was quite good.

Strong and steady jeep Cherokee.
In just a few tears I have driven it a ton, over 100,000 miles already. It still holds up really well. Maintenance has not been much of an issue besides the regular wear and tear like oil and brake pads. The technology inside is fun and easy to use. I enjoy my car over others for that alone. There are a lot of features to make it your own.

Great vehicle, but may have some drawbacks depending on your driving style.
The layout and performance of the 2014 jeep Cherokee latitude is exceptional. However, the transmission often times seems buggy. It often kicks into different gears and sometimes lags behind. I noticed when put into reverse is when it seems to kick back the most.

Good vehicle, just a few problems the manufacturer needs to resolve.
The phone part of the radio stopped working and now the whole radio needs to be replaced. Sometimes when starting the vehicle the radio does not come on for a few minutes, so back up camera will not work until the radio starts working. It cost $1,000 to replace, the transmission shifts hard in the first three gears.

The 2014 jeep Cherokee is a sturdy, smooth, and reliable vehicle. Can navigate narrow city streets, highways, or back country with ease. Lots of leg room. Can fold down the back seats to create extra storage space. My vehicle is a Jeep Cherokee. I bought it used 2 years old with 40000 miles on it. I like the reverse camera and heated seats and steering wheel. I wish there were more vents in the back for my son who sits in a rear facing car seat.

The car shuts off if you leave a door open and try and drive.
No complaints! I love my car great gas mileage. It is excellent in the snow. And family fits comfortably.

I absolutely love this vehicle.
I have only had this vehicle for a little over a week but I have had no problems with this vehicle. It drives very smooth and is very nice. The inside interior is very pristine. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone that's looking for an SUV and a Jeep.

Safe reliable car. Keep your oil changed and it will be good to you
It has been a very reliable car. I feel safe and i feel my family is safe. It may use a little bit more gas. I think it's been a great car

My lovely jeep Cherokee limited 2014.
It overheats easily which most jeeps do. They are hot cars. It has a moon sunroof, heated and cooling seats, touch screen radio, apple carplay, and heated steering wheel. It is a great car and it has lasted me some time. It also has a great radio and mirror dimmer and it has XM radio options and Bluetooth.

Great 4 wheel drive, great attention to detail, good gas mileage.
I have loved my experience with my jeep. The attention to detail makes a big difference. Small features like hidden storage under the front passenger seat, the armrest in the middle for rear passage ra, the adjustability of the rear seats, options for the auto start to automatically turn on the heated seats in the winter, all make the difference. The fuel efficiency is pretty good for an SUV though I find in “automatic” mode the engine seems to pick a lethargic gear which is to the drivers disadvantage when pulling into traffic. The 4 wheel drive system feels reliable. During and after several large snow storms last year, after turning on “snow mode” I get very comfortable driving in the untouched snowy streets.

Pros and cons for jeep Cherokee.
I love jeeps as a whole. This is a very popular model. I was looking for a family car that had 4 wheel drive. We live in the mountains and do a lot of camping and hiking. The stereo is nice. Good storage as well. I love the radio set up. There’s many places to plug in chargers. Two USB ports and a regular outlet which is cool. I will say it is a large boat car which is to expect with the storage space but it has a lot of blind spots. The back windows are very small and the bars going down in the front windshield block a lot of vision. Also it is a gas guzzler.

Perfectly sized SUV for camping.
My Jeep is amazing, and is the perfect size SUV for me. Not too large, but not too small. Medium sized SUV. The design is sleek and the car is spacious and able to transport any items I need. I love it! I can now go kayaking with friends and family.

Looking for a SUV that will handle a small family.
My vehicle has a backup camera that is very useful, a touch screen to make navigation easy, voice commands for hands free use. I like that it has enough room for the basics and a roof rack to carry any extras. This is a good vehicle for those that need a reliable transportation with the basic features to cut down on distractions while driving.

Jeep Cherokee trailhawk is a fantastic SUV option for a small family.
There are issues with the transmission and had radio issues, but it is been in the shop for dealer warranties and the issues have been pretty much taken care of. The car is more than reliable, and is so comfortable to drive. The lane sense technology is incredible and will make it extremely difficult to switch to a new vehicle when the time comes to upgrade to something larger. It is such a fantastic car that we've considered keeping it as a backup vehicle.

The SUV has an outlet which is quite handy when going on long road trips.
Overall it is a nice SUV! Has almost every feature anyone could want in a vehicle but its does have some problems! Whenever I fill my tank up, it stalls within the first 5 or so miles and no mechanic can fix it! It is fairly comfortable with plenty of space in the back seat and an outlet which is a plus.

Needs a lot of work to be worth it.
There has been a lot of recalls and maintained needed. Every time there is an issue they tell me it is a software update and the problem never gets fixed. I also do not like the dealership I have to deal with. They are not friendly or accommodating. So.

That it is a very safe car and gets very good mileage despite its size.
I love the fact that I feel safe in the Jeep. It is also high and is great in city traffic. Does not have any blind spots.

Good for commuters - bad for hauling.
Transmission slips out of gear at times - this requires a full cycle (turn off and on) of the car to clear. Shift handle fell apart after 6 months of use. Coolant tank burst 1 week after warranty expired. All in all good car, great on gas - small for home depot runs however.

Great car, reliable, roomy.
This vehicle is pretty good. It is roomy, but not too big- perfect for a person who often has friends in the car, but does not have kids. It has good storage and ample room. However, the electronic system is not great. It has malfunctioned a few times and is not very updated. The car is easy to clean, though, and is a good mix of sleek and sporty on the inside. The gas mileage also is not great but not too bad. The lights are also not automatic, but they are bright and look very nice on the outside. All that being said, this vehicle is pretty reliable and has served me well in the past year I have owned it. I recommend it to anyone.
